Eumundi Summer Nights program a winner

A

ll the ingredients of Christmas magic were present at the first of the five Nights program with the arrival of the Eumundi Rural Fire Brigade truck with a very special local Santa and a greeting for Santa from a UK baby and his mother. The magical atmosphere was supported by shops open in Memorial Dr and by Christmas lights and kind weather. Original Eumundi Markets general manager Peter Homan said he was well pleased with the first of the five Friday nights. “Craft and food shopping was strong as was kids’ craft workshops. “It was wonderful to see families relaxing and taking in the free outdoor movie too,” he said. More photos on page 10.

Community fighting for its fuel

S

unshine Coast Council served licencee owner of Eumundi Service Station Bob Loudon with a directive to stop supplying fuel on Friday 9 December. Council issued directives to five Sunshine Coast sites following independent advice in the context of new state laws regarding legislative changes to the Dangerous Goods Safety Act of 2001. Council has acted to close the servo based on the findings of a independent risk assessment. This

asserts that there is “…significant risk to public safety, workplace safety and environmental safety in its current operation…” As part of the operation is on Council land, Council would be partly liable for any damages arising. In the days following the closure, local residents, business owners and visitors arriving for fuel service at the service station affectionately known as BP Bob’s were told that the closest service stations were located at Doonan, Cooroy and

Yandina. Many locals have expressed great concern that an important community service was cut with no notice. In addition, many are upset as Bob is a highly respected, popular community leader of many years standing and this further blow has hit at a time when Eumundi is facing economic hardship due to the effect of the ongoing global financial downturn on the spending capacity of visitors and residents. continued on page 3

My Street – Piccabeen St Doonan John and Glenda Robinson

M

T

he publisher, managing editor and team, together with the dozens of volunteers, thank you most sincerely for your support for the Green during a challenging year. We wish readers and their families a happy and safe festive season. We trust you enjoy the enclosed 2012 community diary and advertiser directory – please support these advertisers whose advertising dollars ensure there is a Eumundi Green.

y wife Glenda and I have lived very happily in Piccabeen St Doonan since April 2002. Piccabeen St is in the Laguna Palms estate developed in the 1990s, where all the streets are named after palm trees. Piccabeen is the Aboriginal name for the Bangalow or Alexandra Palm. Other street names include Livistona, Solitaire and Senegal. There are 16 homes in the street and most of the homes are on one acre plus blocks. The residents are all quite keen about their front gardens, mainly planted with natives and some with the original bush still on them. Few residents have free roaming pets

so we still have wildlife around, including a long time resident wallaby with a distinctive white tip on the end of his tail. There are plenty of native birds around. Our favourite is the king parrot who always comes around when the Pigeon Pea trees fruit. The residents are a mix of all ages and include retirees and several younger families with young children. We love living here; it is very quiet but still only 15 minutes from Noosa or Eumundi. We always look forward to reading Eumundi Green – it is unashamedly parochial, but why not when it is all about such a unique and lovely place? Festive wishes to all.

Would you like to write a My Street in 2012?

E

umundi Green will feature the popular My Street feature on page 3 in 2012. Would you like to write about your street or road? Just 150 words are required and a photo. Here are some of the streets we’re hoping to cover next year. If you would like to have a go, please send an email to joyce@eumundigreen. com.au before Auld Lang Syne so a schedule for the new year can be set: Arundell St, Babbling Brook Pl, Butler St, Coleus Rd, Dean Rd, Deidre Dr, Duke Rd, Etheridge St, EumundiKenilworth Rd, Finley Rd, Fleetwood Rd, Fullager St, Grasstree Rd, Larney’s Lane, Lone Hand Rd, Pryor Rd, Solar Rd, Seib Rd, Sudholz Rd, Viv Hull Ave, Ward St and William Rd.

Community fighting for its fuel continued from page 1

Bob will be contesting Council’s directive and it is understood his legal representatives are this week lodging an application for a review of the Council directive. Meanwhile residents, business owners and community organisations have banded together behind Bob and this important community service to explore engaging risk management advisors of their own with a view to re-opening the fuel pumps without compromising safety. A community questionnaire has been circulated by a group known as Save our Servo supporters

regarding the impact of no fuel. During the week group members are likely to be highly visible with protest t-shirts. Following protests last week against similar closures in the communities of Conondale and Peachester, Council softened its line and has undertaken risk management with fuel operators in those towns. As Eumundi Green went to print, Council was maintaining its position on Eumundi until it can be proven that fuel can be pumped safely. Local comment on page 5.

Bridge replacement Lone Hand Rd Eumundi

W

ork will soon commence to remove the existing timber bridge on Lone Hand Rd and replace it with a similar concrete structure. This will include associated road and approach work. The existing bridge has reached the end of its serviceable life and is no longer able to be maintained to carry unrestricted loads. The new bridge will be concrete, have a similar configuration and be slightly higher to improve flood immunity. In order to construct the new bridge and culverts, Sunshine Coast Council will close Lone Hand Rd at the

bridge site for the duration of works. During construction, Council will endeavour to avoid the disturbance of large and established trees. However, should any require removal, Council will do so in accordance with the approvals obtained from the Department of Environment and Resource Management. The project is programmed to start in the week commencing 9 January 2012 and completion is anticipated within twelve weeks (weather permitting).

Save our Servo Campaign

unshine Coast Council’s action with short notice to shut down the petrol bowsers service at Eumundi has aroused strong views in the community including these:

English, French and Australian

English and French antiques and collectables

Dan Parvin: “I was most distraught to learn that the servo can no longer sell me my fuel requirements – it’s unbelievable. The Servo is the most important main street outlet in Eumundi for residents. Most locals have a long-term relationship with the Servo.” Cherrie Orr: “This is devastating for a business that plays a central role in maintaining community spirit and service. I still have trouble believing that the bowsers are shut down. We need people power quick time.”

Richard McLean (and Alexandra): “This is totally inconvenient to me as a business person and a family man – this is our servo and the town has had one I believe for decades without incident. I think we locals need to rally support to get a servo back.” Fiona Williams: “This is highly inconvenient to me as a local small business person. When the pressure is on my business, I don’t leave the town and I’m certainly anxious about the effect on me and my business.” Chris Cameron: “A valuable service has been taken from our town. It’s now up to Council to work with Bob and the local community to find a solution to rectify this as a matter of urgency.”

Mark Bradley: “It’s a great pity as it’s an incredibly handy service. Surely something practical can be done quickly to satisfy Council’s concerns, particularly on market days. Maybe don’t trade til after 2pm those days.” Barrie Adams: “We need to stand tall with Bob and his staff to try to get this directive reviewed – for their sake and to stop the haemorrhage to our local economy. Fuel is an essential just like milk and bread and papers.” Peter Cooper: “Just another example of over governing by this Council who just seem to squash businesses on the coast. Surely a compromise is needed for example, no petrol trading on market days. The community needs to put their power to Council. “ Thursday 22 December 2011

Katie Harvison: “It’s a tragic turn of events as the servo is the backbone of the town. I’m very concerned about the massive economic and social impact. It seems the turning off of fuel has been directed without an appreciation of the backbone factor.”

Just arrived in Australia, just in time for festive shopping! These are the pieces we selected during our October buying trip when we bought over 1000 items. The oldest piece is a 300 year old coffer, but we also bought a large quantity of Art Deco items, from glass to lamps. Things don't have to be expensive to be beautiful, and because of the financial problems in Europe we were able to buy very well and therefore offer you great prices. We’ve jewellery to glass to kitchenware and almost anything else you can think of. If you don't see what you want just ask because we have hundreds of items not yet in the shop. Community News Extension of Noosa Biosphere supported

Local donations support charities in Kenya

Noosa Biosphere Ltd president Dr Sue Davis and scientific adviser Noosa Biosphere secretariat Ben McMullen addressing a Eumundi public meeting at the Eumundi CWA hall last week.

T

he meeting was called to gauge community interest in starting the process to seek UNESCO approval to extend the Noosa Biosphere to include Doonan, Eumundi and Verrierdale. A second meeting was held at Doonan’s Steiner school. Both sessions included presentations on the concept, objectives and benefits of joining the world community of biospheres. The purpose of the meetings was to gain a sense of the level of interest in actively participating in the process and about options for

timelines and resourcing. The objective of the meetings was to ascertain and to determine the capacity of community groups to become involved in the work involved to put in the necessary submission to UNESCO. Discussion revolved around the additional areas that might be proposed and any disadvantages inherent in the EDV area being incorporated into the Biosphere. There were indications of majority support for moving to at least the next step in the extension approval process early next year.

This 30m diameter building in Kenya has been constructed with a four tier foundation of rubber tyres to house homeless children and widows. Sunshine Coast Precious Jewels Foundation charity founder Stephen Hollis has collected donations at Wednesday markets. The director of Exclusive Tyres became very interested in the Foundation’s work during a markets visit. He has since become a generous supporter. Stephen said the charity was grateful also for the support from Louis Formosa, stall holders and visitors. Precious Jewels Foundation works on a very tight budget with administrative funds of less than five per cent of donations.

Arts Scene Indee Theatre News John Burls

O

ur plea a couple of months back in the Green for volunteers to put their hands up to join The Indee Theatre team didn’t draw an avalanche but it did get us a much-needed treasurer. While it’s probably a bad time to ask, heading into the Christmas-New Year break, we’re nonetheless putting out another invitation. We need more folk for 2012 to seat, meet and greet with our front of house team. Volunteers don’t have to do every show and certainly not every performance of a show, just help when it fits into their calendar. You join a very happy group and of course get to see the shows free, when on duty. We’re sure there must be some handy chaps/ladies who read the Green and who could give just a little time making props or scenery (we’ve got a workshop), or paint sets, or help in wardrobe, or in the weekend coffee- shop, or

bar, during shows. Whatever your skills, it’s pretty certain they can be put to good use. If you don’t have any particular skills, there are still areas where you could be involved. Why not give us a call on 5472 8200? Community theatre is great fun and Eumundi’s own theatre (established for 17 years) has a fine reputation for presenting high quality entertainment. You could be part of it. A very special honour has just been bestowed upon The Indee. Phillipa Poole, grand-daughter of Australian novelist Ethel Turner, has given permission for John Burls to do a special adaptation of the children’s classic, Seven Little Australians, as part of the theatre’s centenary specials throughout 2012, marking the 100 years of the School of Arts Hall. It will involve both the adult theatre and the Indee Young Players and will be onstage in October.

Your Say Please correct misinformation Let it be known that the: Development Application (DA) for 2 x 88m (i.e. the height of a 22-storey building) radio broadcast towers proposed for canelands in Valdora Road, Valdora is not being built by the ABC. No! Broadcast Australia, a company owned by a Canadian Pension Fund, is the applicant . Markets Drum Bus services are full

From the stalls “Through the eyes of Savage” Fair weather stallholders

O

K, I give up. I have gone through my email inbox, and I certainly didn’t receive any notification by post. What am I referring to? I’m trying to find out where it says that a stallholder can just “up and leave” after the market has opened, only because they don’t like the weather. This happened on Wednesday 14 December. These stallholders effectively drove out potential buyers (by parking in front of their stalls when the market was trading). Visitors came from far and wide to shop at the markets even though the weather was bad. I can’t speak for every stallholder but within the area I trade some had a reasonable day and others just broke even. I’m not saying we were “happy little vegemites” that the weather was bad, however

we turned up and chose to stay and make the best of it. We owe it to those who’ve come to shop. They want to experience Eumundi, maybe only once in their lives, and we owe it to them stay open and do the best we can. When I first began at Eumundi some four years ago I was told that I was expected to turn up “rain, hail or shine”. That’s fair. Apparently the market has been closed only once or twice due to real cyclonic conditions. Stallholders are supposed to be resilient – that’s why we are true market traders. Anyway, to those who decamped and did not pay their fees to the EDCA, don’t worry, those of us who stayed did and therefore supported the Association as we should. Usual disclaimers and apologies to be sent to EDCA!

T

he OIC of Eumundi Police Station Al McPhee and his wife Kath were presented with a framed Eumundi memento as a thank you gift by Cherrie Orr on behalf of a grateful community for a job “very well done”. Al is on transfer to Longreach after four years. In his farewell speech Al said he was humbled at the “fuss” over his farewell and paid a tribute to the spirit of Eumundi and said the family would particularly miss the

friendships and the school. Al said whilst it wasn’t always easy to be the sergeant in a little town, he very much enjoyed his Eumundi posting. Marty White from Noosa will be the new sergeant. Constable Blair Doran enjoyed an arm-wrestle with his erstwhile boss to the amusement of the supportive audience. The audience included Karen Allen and Cr Paul Tatton (below right). Karen as secretary of EHA was part of the large gathering of volunteers treated to a modest Christmas meal by their associations to mark their year of voluntary work and to celebrate International Volunteers Day.

Health and Lifestyle How old are you really?

Maria Sturre, naturopath, Make A Difference Health and Fitness

U

nlike your chronological age (the number of years you’ve been on the planet), a biological age test determines your body’s actual biological age when compared with standard biological age markers of the general population. Many of us have watched celebrities and contestants on reality television shows such as Biggest Loser and Oprah being assessed and also turning back the clock on their biological age. Your biological age provides an estimate of your life expectancy and also the likelihood of your having a healthy fully functional body in your later years. If you’ve watched any of those shows you’ve surely wondered just how old your body really is. Well there is no need to wonder anymore! The same technology that has been written about in

national magazines like Marie Claire and WellBeing and shown on prime time television shows, is available locally. The VLA (Vitality, Longevity, Healthy Ageing) machine was developed by NASA and measures a range of aspects such as total body water, fat mass, lean mass, weight, cellular health, body composition, fluid distribution, cell membrane performance, skeletal tissue and active tissue mass, and it is through assessment of these types of parameters that your biological age is determined. A VLA consultation takes about 30 minutes, is painless and provides a wealth of information on your health. It is a great starting point if you want to change your health and fitness as it is a great way to identify the areas you need to improve on and those that you are already doing well in.

The Heart Foundation says the Queensland Government’s announcement to introduce new laws to ensure nutrition information is displayed on the menus of fast food and snack food chains will help improve our nutrition and reduce obesity. This legislation will bring Queensland into line with NSW and the ACT who have legislation in place, as well as South Australia who have made similar announcements. In Queensland the law will apply to cafés, fast food and snack food chains that have 20 or more outlets in Queensland or 50 outlets nationally.

Bits and Pieces  Keep Smiling at Christmas brought to you by Matt Noakes, Eumundi Post Office Ph 5442 8202 Holiday opening hours Eumundi Post Office Sat 24 Dec 9–11am Open Mon & Tues 26 and 27 Dec Closed Wed & Thurs 28 and 29 Dec Open Fri & Sat 30 and 31 Dec Closed Mon 2 Jan Closed Tues 3 Jan Open (Regular opening hours return: Mon to Fri 8.30am – 5pm, and Sat 9–11am) Best wishes for your festive celebrations and please consider my advice on New Year’s Day Resolutions before 31 December: The very strong tradition to make resolutions on 1 January is meant to help give away old bad habits and adopt better ones. Research shows the most popular new year resolutions include weight reduction, quitting smoking, giving up junk food, saving money and being punctual. The same research noticed that many people fail to keep their resolutions a week after New Year’s Day, but somehow the tradition of making a fresh New Year’s Day resolution every year remains. Good luck with your resolutions!

Green Tip Top five tips this festive season

T

o reduce food waste in your home, follow the top five Love Food Hate Waste tips this festive season: Plan your celebration meals Planning your meals will help you save time and money and reduce the amount of food that is thrown away. Write a shopping list By writing a shopping list based on your menu plan you will be less likely to be tempted by specials, deals and impulse purchases. A good shopping list will take into account what you already have and will help you stay focused on what you need to buy. Measure your serving sizes It can be tricky to estimate how much to prepare when hosting family and friends but it is important to get the serving size per person right, as over-catering and waste are closely related. Store your food correctly During the festive season the fridge never seems big enough. Try not to overload your fridge – maintaining the recommended temperature of 3-4 degrees Celsius and good air flow is important for food safety and to keep your food longer. Use your leftovers Each year households throw away millions of dollars worth of leftovers. If you have leftovers, make sure that you use them for another meal rather than putting them in the bin or compost. Many dishes taste even better the next day. Make sure that you store your leftovers in airtight containers in the fridge to keep them fresher for longer.

Season’s Greetings On behalf of the ECCO Board I would like to wish everyone a very happy Christmas and a prosperous and community spirited new year. ECCO looks forward to serving you in 2012, by delivering quality community services and supporting your community initiatives. Barrie Adams, Chair barriee@optusnet.com.au 0403 199 094 Calling all community groups, charities and sporting teams Need more income to support your organisation’s activities? Are you saving for a big event or team travel? Opportunities are now available for not-for-profit community groups, charities and sporting teams to volunteer for the Eumundi car park on Wednesdays and Saturdays throughout 2012. Pull your team together and earn a donation for your association at the rate of $20 an hour per person to support your community activities. Current volunteer groups include the Eumundi Chamber of Commerce, Riding for Disabled and Cooroora Woodworkers. Chamber of Commerce president Barrie Adams said his organisation earned an important supplement to their annual membership subscriptions of $110 pa from their car park volunteering activities enabling the Chamber to expand its service to members. To find out more please contact John Turnbull on 0419 218 347. Vacancies for casual parking attendants Applications for employment are sought from individuals interested in joining an on-call register of persons for emergency car parking duties to assist the co-ordinator. Award rates apply. Please email CV to eccoinbox@gmail.com by 13 January 2012. To find out more please contact John Turnbull on 0419 218 347. Eumundi bus driver not quite himself

ECCO's community bus services work so well mostly because of its committed drivers. One of these community heroes, volunteer John Laarkamp, is not quite himself at the moment. All of us at ECCO and on behalf of a grateful Eumundi and district community wish John a full and speedy recovery and yes, John, there is a space for you on the roster as soon as you are ready.

Nature Notes and Outdoors Rosellas Kon Hepers

W

hile living in the western suburbs of Sydney we were used to seeing the bright scarlet plumage of pairs or small flocks of Rosellas flashing through our yard or feeding on grass seeds in the nearby park. They were very common and apparently they were so prominent in a suburb just up the road – Rose Hill – that the earlier settlers called these birds “Rose Hillers”, which became “rosellas”. Rosellas are one of Australia’s most iconic birds and that scarlet head with white cheeks makes them a favourite in wildlife photography, advertising, post cards and colouring books. They are referred to as eastern rosella, Platycercus eximius and they belong to the closely related group of “White-cheeked” rosellas. When we came to the Sunshine Coast, we were surprised that these birds were missing; but they were replaced by very similar parrots with pale yellow head colouring instead of the scarlet, and call and flight seemed identical. This pale-headed rosella was regarded by some authors as a form of the eastern rosella, but has now been given separate species status as Platycercus adscitus within that “White-cheeked” group.

Eumundi Green around the world Robin Vartin

The eastern rosella’s distribution is South-east Australia from Victoria through NSW to just across the border of Queensland and we have noticed them abundant in the New England area. The southern-most pale-headed rosella we have spotted was in a park in Warwick. The two species are said to hybridise and just once we saw a pale-headed rosella with a patch of scarlet head-feathers like a skullcap visiting our yard. (Of course the hurried photo is out of focus.) A few years in a row we had a pair of rosellas nesting in one of our council-provided nesting boxes, but last year a goanna raided the box and so far this year the birds have made no attempt at nesting but are staying close by, perhaps making sure the goanna isn’t around anymore before committing.

Heather and I were picking up a car from Sydney – flew down and drove back, Thelma and Louise style, and couldn’t help but stop at one of Australia’s greatest icons ... for a banana smoothie and a quick read of one of Australia’s greatest magazines.

Come in to Discover Eumundi to see our display on the history of the building now in its 100th year. Our unique apron exhibition continues until the end of January – the winner of the $50 Berkelouw Books voucher for following the apron trail through town was David Carroll of Camp Hill. Thanks to a Sunshine Coast Council RADF grant we were able to commission local artist Ian Gunn to create eight drawings for the centenary celebrations to represent different aspects of Eumundi’s history. These have been used to create these stylish Eumundi greeting cards available at Discover Eumundi for $3 each or the set of eight for $20.

Water conservation in the garden

With Christmas holidays upon you, the last thing you want is for all your hard work to be ruined by the heat if you’re heading away for a holiday over the break. Mulching helps to preserve the moisture in the soil, also the use of a wetting agent such as Searle’s Penetrade which is a granulate sprinkled onto the soil and watered in ensuring the medium retains water. Use Penetrade on bare soil, water well and apply mulch. We recommend lucerne mulch because as it breaks down it adds nitrogen to the soil. Ensure that you water well again after mulching. If you’re planting, prior to going away, include the use of water crystals in your planting regime. This should see your plants fare well whilst you’re away enjoying your holiday and your garden will be lovely for you to enjoy upon your return. For your convenience, we have all of the above products available at the Garden Centre. We are closed on 24 December and re-open on 28 December, closed 31 December and re-open on 3 January 2012. We wish all our valued readers and customers a safe and happy festive season and look forward to being of service to you all in 2012. 791 Eumundi-Noosa Rd Doonan

Retaining Mary Valley land for agriculture

W

Merry Christmas

from the Solar Power Specialists team

hile speaking on the Strategic Cropping Land Bill during the final sitting of Parliament for 2011, Member for Nicklin Peter Wellington again pushed for better protection of farming land including protecting the Mary Valley land purchased by the government for the former Traveston Dam. Much of this land, which is still owned by the government, is currently categorised as “management area”. Peter said he believed this and other good agricultural land on the Sunshine Coast needs to be protected.

Buffer zones introduced by Councils years ago have not worked for the farming community, with residential neighbours’ complaints making it impossible for farmers to spray their crops. “I urged the government (and if the government should change, an alternative government) to genuinely look at reviewing this legislation to provide greater protection for farmers. It is vital that our government not just roll over to the developers, who seem to have the ear of the government and the alternative government,” Peter said.

he national body for local government has welcomed the Australian Government’s introduction of the new Carbon Farming Initiative (CFI) methodology, describing it as an opportunity for councils to reduce pollution and make productive use of methane emissions from old landfill waste. President of the Australian Local Government Association (ALGA) Genia McCaffery said the Association agreed that the Government’s Methodology for the capture and combustion

of methane in landfill gas from legacy waste under the CFI would provide direct incentives for landfill operators to reduce emissions. “I would urge all councils that are managing landfills around the country to take advantage of opportunities through this program to create carbon credits by capturing and destroying methane emissions from old landfills through flaring and, where possible, for the production of electricity for sale through the grid,” Ms McCaffery said. Locals Home and Abroad Aussies at the NY Marathon

Mile 10 with Elisabeth and her good friend Carrie cheering her with Lucas born only 5 days earlier and her mum. Note the UN and Aussie flags on the sign and Elisabeth’s shirt. We all got lots of “Go Aussie” comments. Even one “Go New Zealand” – bit of a worry!

Elisabeth Turnbull-Brown

T

hree Aussie mates working for the UN had a dream to run the New York marathon. The mates are from different parts of Australia: Renata Sivacolundhu Canberra, Darrin Farrant Melbourne and Elisabeth Turnbull-Brown from

Eumundi/Tamworth. After running many qualifying races and entries deferred due to a baby (Renata), work in Cambodia (Elisabeth) and work in Sudan (Darrin), 2011 was the year to do it!

Along with 46,972 other people Team RED successfully finished the 26.2 mile or 42.2km. It was a tough race but the crowd support from the crazy spectators as well as family and friends helped us through. We held a celebratory dinner at a local Australian bar. Here is a picture of us in “Sydney” tired and sore but happy to be finished. Team RED had a reunion lunch and caught up on local events in the Eumundi Green. Here the team has one final photo with their finishers’ medals outside the UN building. Renata has already packed hers as she is returning to Australia in January to live in Perth with her family.

Two days before the marathon the Australian Consulate in New York held a reception for Aussie’s participating in the marathon. It was also to welcome an Indigenous team who were coached by champion Australian marathon runner Robert de Castella (right). “Deeks” introduced his team and also gave the crowd a pep talk. Team RED (Renata (second right), Elisabeth and Darrin) were able to have a quick private coaching session and photo shoot. His advice: New York marathon is tough – don’t go out too hard.
