The centre is in desperate need of funding and the public meeting in Eumundi allowed locals to gather and share fundraising and planning ideas.

For the past 14 years, the Brownhills have relied on local donations and modest government grants to cover operating costs.

Gill and Col’s work has been totally

voluntary during those long years and for some time they have been planning for a new model of operation in the knowledge that arrangements for the longer term sustainability of the centre were needed. However health issues have made the need for operating changes more urgent. Gill, with the assistance of volunteers, has been successful in having the Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre obtain Deductible Gift Recipient status which they hope will lead continued on page 5

Servo update

Representatives of state government met servo owner Bob Loudon on site last week to further consider Bob’s application for a review of Sunshine Coast Council’s decision to shut down the Eumundi servo. Bob said he thought the meeting went well and is waiting for a decision. If the relevant state government department does not issue any further information requests a decision is expected to be made within 14 days.

Winners were: Cherrie Orr – Community Improvement Award for “Outstanding dedication and leadership in co-ordinating community events including ANZAC Day and Community Carols and for achievement as an ambassador for Eumundi”.

Shara Gillow – Contribution to the Arts or Sports Award for “spectacular performance as Australian cyclist of the year winning national competitions, performing well on the world stage and in expectation of Olympic nomination”.

Jon Gemmell – Contribution to Sustainability for “Leadership at Eumundi State School winning the Healthiest School in Qld award with project funding of $250K for an inside outside classroom area and for his permaculture and worm farm work”.

Lily Parsons – Young Achiever Award for “Outstanding achievement as dux and school captain of Noosa District High School in 2011 and similarly at year 7 at Eumundi State School and as runner up in the Creative Generation Excellence award in visual art and design 2011.

e’ve been living in Seib Road for 5 years. It’s nice living so close to town and not being able to hear a thing except the occasional train.

It’s also nice having our grandparents just down the road.

Our street gets its name from early white settlers. A Mr Edward Seib came to live in Eumundi purchasing a farm from the school teacher Mr Hore in 1929. He worked in many occupations including the North Arm Goldmines and Eumundi Butter Factory and was a foundation member of the Eumundi Tennis Club. His son Colin Seib bought the family farm in the early 1960s and other properties in what is known as Seib Rd. Our street is well known

We do a lot of bike riding and ride to school almost every day. We can also walk to town as we have put a plank across the north Maroochy River that borders our property.

Our dad Ross has been “weeding” with a group of volunteers in the Eumundi Conservation Park down the road. His aim is to get rid of all of the nonnatives in the park.

Our mum Amy is an artist and does abstract art. She uses our shed as her studio that she works from.

Lots of people we know live in Seib Rd, like our school captain Jack, Mrs Mergard, and Tom, a boy in Coco’s year.

The Sunshine Coast Bridal Expo at Novotel Twin Waters Resort provided good exposure and some firm bookings for Fiona Williams of Fiona’s Fancies who has been trading successfully now for 18 months next door to the medical centre.

appy New Year from your management committee! We do hope that your 2012 year will be prosperous and the economy will start to turnaround in a positive way. The first meeting of the year held at Jacaranda Creek Farmstay & B&B heralded the start of a new chapter for the Chamber with changes to the meeting format and the introduction of an extended management committee.

Every second month there will be a networking activity conducted on the fourth Thursday of the month. After each meeting members will be kept informed through the ECC column in your community magazine, distribution of minutes, emails and a newsletter.

The first of the networking nights will be held at Joe’s Waterhole on Thursday 23 February at 5.30pm. All members and their guests are invited to attend. It is hoped that members will take advantage of the new format to catch up with fellow Eumundi business owners in a relaxed and informal way.

During the year there are a number of events to be held in Eumundi including the annual Food Fest which this year celebrates its tenth year. A working group will be meeting at the end of January to come up with ways to enhance and expand this activity with some surprise elements. We have already taken on board feedback received from members about the timing. This year’s event will be held on Sunday 12 August and we are hoping by changing the timing, we will have greater opportunities for support funding as well as provide a greater array of local Eumundi produce. If you have any creative ideas you would like to provide to the working group, please send me an email at ecc@eumundi.info.

Don’t forget our annual Australian Body Art Carnivale now in its fifth year and again a great weekend of competitions, entertainment and special events are planned around the weekend of the 12 and 13 May. Eumundi is the home to some of the most amazing events during the year and we do hope you support them all. We will feature others planned for 2012 through our monthly column.

T

here are three kinds of people in the world: Those who make things happen, those who watch things happen and those who wonder what happened.

People who make things happen do that because they are planned. They plan their work and work their plan.

Planning is an everyday necessity. You have to plan to get out of bed (or plan not to!) you have to plan to eat or drink, you have to plan to start your car, check the tyres, the water, the fuel content and so on.

In a bigger picture and relating to “business” there are in my opinion three important plans: 1. Life plan (your needs) 2. Business plan (its road map for continuation and sustainability) 3. Strategic plans (expansion, mergers, acquisitions, succession) In this article I will deal with the life plan, as I am only allowed 150 words and have exceeded that already so I had better plan to be brief: A life plan in my opinion should be reduced to five year intervals and it should outline what you and your family’s needs are for the next five years. As you are in business, which is the conduit through which you will attain and satisfy those needs, your needs have to be definitive and realistic. Such needs will include those of your children (if they are still at home) you and your spouse. So it is essential all family members are persuaded to contribute to the list of needs.

Needs should include time to pursue hobbies, holidays, schooling, personal fitness and development etc and to identify the answer to the question “Do I live to work or work to live”.

Next time I will deal with “Business Planning” which will provide the resources to satisfy those needs.

While she didn’t have any specific expectations for the night, Gill believes the establishment of sub-committees of the centre will be invaluable: “It’s really nice to have committee volunteers come forward and help with things I’m not able to do, as I’ve got to concentrate on the day-to-day running of the centre.” Around

1500 wildlife patients are cared for each year until they are well enough to be released into a suitable habitat.

News in brief Sunshine Coast Council took ownership of the Horton Park Golf Club land last Friday with the transfer of the land from the golf club to council being gazetted.

Mayor Bob Abbot said it was a landmark day for the Coast and the future of the region’s central business district; and it will build the confidence needed to proceed with the overall development of the Maroochydore town centre, allied infrastructure and the associated jobs that go with business expansion and new investment.

Maleny Annual Motorcycle SWAP 2012 hosted by Queensland Historical Motorcycle, the SWAP is set for Sunday 18 March 2012.

Your Say Join the band of merry weeders Thank you for running my story on Ross Clarke in the preChristmas edition of the Green.

I do need to confess that Ross has not started the Australian Lumberjack Association. I am an old school friend of Ross’s and have noticed that since he moved to Eumundi he has been inspired by the strong sense of community the town has. This has made me a little envious, hence my fun story.

I have now seen the error of my ways and have decided to put down my pen and pick up my handsaw to join Ross and his band of merry weeders on the monthly weeding days in “the park”. The park is the Eumundi Conservation Park that has only recently been given this status. The weeding is contributing to a park that will one day be a favourite place for many.

I encourage others to do the same by joining the first weed day of the year from 3pm to 5pm on Saturday 11 February, and the first Saturday of each month from then on. I look forward to meeting some of the Eumundi community while we’re weeding.

Locals deserve an hour car park As a local, I like to support our Saturday markets. My husband and I regularly go down on Saturday mornings to grab our coffee, yoghurt and fruit and veg. The parking located at the bottom of the terraces near the toilet block was one hour parking during market times. This gave us just enough time to do what we needed to do without clogging street parking, or having to pay $5. However, the signs have been changed to say that it is now half hour parking! What can we get done in half an hour? Who made this decision and why? This is just another instance of making life difficult for the locals.

The Eumundi Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre survives with the grit and determination of Gill Brownhill and the enduring passion of volunteers.

Gill Brownhill is a proud woman who has called upon the community for support to achieve a way forward in these desperate times. I was impressed with the resolve shown by all attending the town meeting, to find a plan to secure an income stream for a viable, long term future of the centre.

There is very small funding provided by the council which doesn’t reflect the invaluable service provided by the Brownhills, together with their loyal team of volunteers, tirelessly working for decades to eventually release our injured and orphaned native wildlife back into the environment.

If elected, I will work to convince other councillors to support this worthwhile cause and recognise this work appropriately for protecting what is left of our heritage.

Diane Howard of Solar Power Specialists said, “They have been valued professionals to our businesses for many years and of course we have their farm products in our tea room.”

lexina Johnson is well known in local farming and green networks as the owner of olive oil and tea company, Obi Obi Essentials. Fifteen years ago, she and her husband Barry created their own olive tree plantation.

Now Alexina is the Chairwoman of Seasons of the Sun, a group created to bring together producers of more than 150 products that are grown, farmed and produced in the Sunshine Coast region. The Seasons of the Sun concept was brought together in an effort to educate consumers and food professionals about the vast diversity and quality of food and drink that the Sunshine Coast can generate, and the associated benefits to the region’s economy

For example, we have an amazing solar drier simply because I met a man at a meeting. He had developed the design and agreed to build one for us. I understand that niche market farming can be successful but you have to stay fresh and look at ways to be better all the time.”

Belonging to the Biosphere Extending the Noosa Biosphere boundary – what would it mean to Eumundi, Doonan and Verrierdale?

T

he Noosa Biosphere Reserve has been recognised by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) under its Man and the Biosphere program. It is one of 580 worldwide across more than 114 countries, and is one of 14 in Australia. Noosa Biosphere is recognised globally for its rich biodiversity particularly for these features in its area of 875 sq km: 35 per cent protected land such as national parks, conservation parks, state forests, vacant crown land, lakes and streams; over 44 per cent of all of Australia’s bird species; 1,365 species of plants; 711 species of native fauna and 60 distinct ecosystems.

Why include Eumundi, Doonan and Verrierdale now?

What does it mean to be in a biosphere?  Man and the Biosphere identifies and champions regions that have special environments with a wide range of plants and animals

 Communities in biosphere reserves play an active role in helping look after such environments sustainably

 Biosphere reserves are encouraged to play an active role in education and research and to share their learning locally and internationally

 Biosphere reserves promote a balanced relationship between humans and the environment.

A

t the time the original submission to UNESCO was developed there were numerous requests to include Eumundi, Doonan and Verrierdale and surrounding areas. Those making the requests, including Noosa Council’s Sector Advisory Boards, strongly believed the Eumundi, Doonan and Verrierdale areas have similar conservation and community values, including concern for environmental sustainability, to those in the

Noosa Biosphere region.

However the required detailed environmental and social information sat within the then Maroochy Shire Council. Hence the submission was designed around the existing Noosa Shire Council boundaries with the intention that in the future, efforts would be directed towards extending the biosphere boundary to include the additional areas if those communities supported the extension.

Biosphere reserves are established to promote and demonstrate a balanced relationship between humans and the biosphere.

Belonging to the Biosphere Would Eumundi, Doonan and Verrierdale benefit?

T

he Eumundi, Doonan and Verrierdale communities would be part of a global community of best practice regarding community and environmental sustainability.

Economically, the region could capitalise on Man and the Biosphere status to tap into a growing number of ecotourism opportunities including increased visitor numbers coming to Noosa Biosphere from education and

research organisations around the world.

As an example, in the 18 months to mid-2012 more than 400 students from the University of Georgia, USA, will make selffinanced study visits to Noosa Biosphere. Local accommodation, food and tour providers and other businesses are expected to benefit from an average spending capacity of $2000 per student.

What would need to happen for the extension to occur?

The current Noosa Biosphere boundaries are based on the old Noosa Shire boundaries. To work out any new biosphere boundaries will involve local consultation for at least the next six months.

Does using the term Eumundi mean including the areas of Eerwah Vale and Belli Park?

o submit an application to UNESCO in 2012 will necessitate a six month work and consultation plan starting now.

Firstly, there has to be community interest and support for the idea.

Information has to be gathered about geographic details, ecosystem types, land use history, cultural significance, flora and fauna features, human

development, tourism, etc.

When complete, the submission will have to be authorised at local, state and federal levels.

The submission will need to be prepared by the end of July in order for it to go through all the government approval processes.

If this is too soon we can look at a possible submission for 2013 or 2014.

L

ife would be dull without our constant companions. But do we really appreciate them or do we discard them too readily? Then when we pay attention to them, we realise how much they have changed without our being aware of it.

This was brought home to me recently in a conversation with my daughter. We were discussing one of my closest companions – my bed sheets.

They are perhaps the most taken-for-granted companions, because I have relied (sic ) on them most days of my life. My talk with my daughter made me realise how my treatment of these companions has changed when I told her how I used to manage them.

Forty years ago, a “good” pair of sheets was always one particular brand and came in a box. The name I shall not disclose because I may have to pay an advertising fee. I can’t remember anything

about thread counts or where the cotton was grown.

What I do recollect of that time was I never gave up on my sheets.

When they wore out in the centre, I cut them in half, put the outer and not-so-worn edges to the centre, stitched them together and the sheets were good for another 100 sleeps. When they eventually wore out, the remaining strong pieces were made into pillow slips. What was left was cut and neatly hemmed into lovely soft handkerchiefs, and the leftovers were torn into strips for bandages, all rolled up ready for use.

The sheet companions were not discarded at the first sign of weakening. They were lovingly encouraged to live a life of full potential.

I hope I have helped to bring out the best in the human companions who passed through my life, and will continue to do so.

Too bad about the sheets. I don’t recycle them anymore. Shame.

ocals are being urged to remember the basics of good spinal health before tackling their New Year’s fitness resolutions.

As the annual clamour to get in shape after the excesses of Christmas and the party season gains momentum, the Chiropractors’ Association of Australia (CAA) has released a new Healthy Spine Checklist for people to review before putting on the training gear and risking injury.

While many of us are keen to make amends for overindulgence in the holiday period, it is important to ensure we have a healthy spine before hitting the gym and the training track.

Whether it was over-indulging in seasonal merriment, chasing after holidaying kids, going to parties, or jostling for bargains in the sales, our backs have been put under enormous additional strain over past weeks.

However, the rush to get in shape in response to this can actually do more harm than good if the basics of good spinal health are not adhered to. Many people are, in fact, putting their bodies at

risk.

Before starting a new fitness regime, look out for the following symptoms of poor spinal health:  Having difficulty turning your head so your chin makes it to your shoulder  Struggling to bend down so your hands drop below your knees when your legs are straight  Experiencing stiffness in your body or joints on waking in the morning  Soreness or stiffness during walking  Difficulty putting socks and/or shoes on whilst standing Your overall level of fitness can be affected by the health of your spine. As 2012 unfolds, we are urging people to get the basics right first – employing correct posture, walking upright, having good nutrition – before getting in shape. If they do, their resolutions are more likely to become a reality rather than left unfulfilled as so many are at this time of year. I recommend that anyone trying to get in shape in 2012 should consider a visit to their local chiropractor to tune up their body and make sure it is ready to go.

The ozone hole Janet Millington

E

very spring the ozone hole grows over Antarctica and now in other parts of the world. The beneficial ozone (trioxygen) in the higher levels of our atmosphere prevents damaging electromagnetic radiation from reaching Earth.

It was in the 1970’s that we first measured this effect and as the years passed we have watched it grow and shrink at about 4 per cent a decade.

There was a big push in the late 1980’s to reduce the use of CFCs and related halocarbons.

We actually faced that problem as a global community and did reduce the damage to our protective layer. But it seems the hole is opening up again.

Australians are particularly at risk of skin damage as Earth’s ability to absorb ultra violet light diminishes most significantly above us.

So what can we do in Eumundi? Follow the old “slip, slop, slap” steps but include sunglasses as eye damage is increased by this phenomenon.

It is particularly important for children to be protected and to learn the habits they will have to have for a lifetime. Staying out of the sun altogether isn’t a practical option and can have other side effects such as not enough synthesis of vitamin D, some forms of melancholy or depression through lack of sunlight and spending too much time indoors brings its own chemical risks too.

So we need to design our gardens, parks, schools and streets so that there is proper shade, improve our general health and well being and ensure we get plenty of fruit and veggies of a wide variety Thursday 2 February 2012

of colours. Yes it seems that colour does matter by affecting skin pigments. We need to think also about our pets and domestic livestock and about our plants which have to cope with this extra bombardment of rays just as we do. Shady paddocks do not lose the grass coverage once calculated by graziers. You can actually gain by planting productive fruit and nut trees for your animals to gather around in the heat of the day. Think of all that urine and manure you don’t have to deliver to your trees!

If you are planning to put up shade cloth, do consider using the white one rather than the green or black. This cuts down the heat but still allows the light in and can even increase the light to our winter gardens.

In the winter our day lengths here are significantly shorter than the southern parts which get that lovely long twilight.

There are plenty of lovely hats, long sleeved shirts and long pants in our shops and market stalls, so cover up and enjoy all our lovely Coast has to offer!

Environment and Outdoors Group tasked with finding a new waste solution

S Grants available for environmental works on private land Landholder Environment Grants Private landholders are invited to apply for a Landholder Environment Grant to assist with environmental works on their properties.

Landholders can apply for assistance with natural resource management projects such as: ► fencing to restrict stock access to significant vegetation, creeks and rivers ► installing off-stream stock watering points and stock crossings ► revegetation of degraded areas or to establish vegetation corridors ► soil conservation works, sediment and erosion control ► control of environmental weeds to rehabilitate native vegetation areas ► restoring habitat for rare or threatened species ► modification of existing fencing to make it more wildlife friendly.

Priority will be given to projects with high ecological values.

unshine Coast Council could make a decision on the best Alternative Waste Treatment system for the region by the middle of the year. An Alternative Waste Treatment Working Group is to be formed to develop and recommend a model to Council by July 2012.

This will ensure Council is on target to meet the State Government’s requirement of a 65 per cent diversion from landfill for household waste by 2020.

Environment Portfolio Councillor Keryn Jones said the group will review the potential models for alternative waste treatment and provide Council with a short list of options for the type of technology and the number of bins.

“This is about getting the best outcome for the environment and ratepayers as we strive to make the Sunshine Coast the most sustainable region in Australia,” Cr Jones said.

“This is a very complex issue and a lot of work has already been done over the past three years to assess the social impacts, environmental benefits, economic

development opportunities and the indicative cost to ratepayers.

“Based on the information we’ve gathered, the working group will prepare a business case and implementation plan which compares the different options, and will go to Council by July.

“That will include a whole-of-life financial evaluation and triplebottom-line assessment to assist Council to make its decision.”

Household kerbside waste accounts for about half of all the waste in the region’s landfills, and provides Council with the single greatest opportunity to achieve waste diversion.

The options to be considered include:  The consideration of two- or three-bin options  Technologies for composting and energy production.

Any facility would be expected to be established at Sustainability Park, which adjoins Corbould Industrial Park.

Council’s existing collection contracts end in June 2014 and a new request for tender will need to be issued by November 2012.

A

s the spherical flowers fade, we have two choices to make for more plants. Wait for the flowers to fade and subsequent seed pods to arrive, turn brown and begin to open before tapping into a paper towel to collect. Sow fresh as the drying has occurred naturally in the pod. Germination occurs within a month and then re-pot once the seed pot has roots through the bottom.

For a quicker new plant, divide the existing “Mother plant”. Find a suitable point of separation within the leafy clump (generally on the

edges) and, providing you get a decent portion of root, simply drive a spade down and prise the top and root away from the main clump. From here, separate the parts into smaller clumps with leaf and root and re-pot. The mother plant will soon recover from the shock and fill the space taken and the new offspring will root fully in the pot in months and be ready to plant out. (N.B. Use thick plastic pots for planting up both the rooted seed and separated clumps as the strong roots can split weak plastic.)

urnford Dart of Bamboo Australia, Belli Park reports on a local python devouring one of his Anconas: The chook was on the back verandah late at night when I heard a squawk, raced out to see what was happening only to find out that I was too late. Rather than wasting the chook, I let the python have his meal.

I watched for about an hour to see how it intended to get it down, an interesting observation.

First it partly swallowed the head, then wrapped around the body crushing the skeleton of the chook (I could hear the bones cracking).

By this time it was 1am so I put the lot in a box and went to bed.

Next morning the chook had gone and a large lump was in the snake. The snake was relocated to protect the rest of the Anconas.

Since replacing the 40 chooks lost to foxes last year the python population has increased dramatically.

From our terrific Nature Notes writer Kon Hepers: “In the last issue of the Green, Nature Notes had a photo of a fungus we had not identified. I’ve found a much better specimen in the markets car park and can identify it as the Crinoline Fungus, Phallus multicolour”.

Education and Culture Foundation misses grant for DE

he Eumundi Historical Foundation was not successful in its December bid for a federal Regional Development Australia Fund (RDAF) grant for redevelopment of the Discover Eumundi building.

Due to a change in the funding body’s rules for the grant application in November, the Foundation was faced with just a month’s notice to pull together an Expression of Interest (EOI) to be considered for Round 2 of RDAF this year.

Foundation chair Fran Maguire said they were likely in a much better position at that point to submit an EOI than many other similar organisations thanks to the previous five months hard work in pulling an application together for an expected February deadline.

“The result was hugely disappointing of course,” she said. “The whole project team had worked incredibly hard during the year towards what we believe was a very strong application.

There must be many organisations across Australia who feel they were delivered a tough curve ball late last year and I understand some elected to pull out at that stage after

spending a large amount of probably voluntary time and money on the development of their applications.”

Fran said the board is seeking feedback from the regional committee of RDAF to understand where its application was not competitive and whether a further round is likely.

“The redevelopment of Discover Eumundi hasn’t been dropped,” she said. “In fact quite the opposite, as we’re now in a position we’ve not been in before, that is to have plans for the building to improve access and appeal of the street frontage, update and extend the display areas and create badly needed community space, for which we’ll continue to seek funding.”

Fran acknowledged the tenacity of fellow Foundation board members Terry Lawrence and Damien Jones, of Wendy Birrell and Sue Campin and thanked Andrew Webb of WD Architects of Cooran without whose extensive pro bono work reaching this stage would have been incredibly difficult. She also acknowledged the support of Crs Vivien Griffin and Paul Tatton and council officers with whom they had frequent liaison during the project.

unshine Coast Council wants to hear from volunteers interested in becoming adult literacy tutors in 2012.

2012 is the National Year of Reading, and Sunshine Coast Libraries and the Department of Employment, Economic Development and Innovation are supporting the adult literacy tutor training program.

Nearly half of the Australian population can’t read newspapers, follow a recipe, make sense of timetables or understand the instructions on a medicine bottle.

Volunteers can complete an accredited training course and help increase literacy standards

on the Coast.

The training provides volunteers with the tools and information required to help community members improve their literacy.

The first training course starts at Kawana on 13 February 2012 and the second training course starts after Easter.

To become a volunteer literacy tutor, collect an information pack from Council and complete the application form. There are limited spaces on the course and applicants will be interviewed prior to commencing the training.

The sessions are expected to help community members of all ages better understand technology and how it can be used to improve connections with family and friends.

Learn how to set up a Facebook account, create a profile, upload photos to share and set up a safe user profile. Session topics may

vary across the branches.

Participants need to have an established email account and possess basic computer and internet skills.

Sessions are at Cooroy on 13 February 10am–11.30am, Nambour, Thursday 23 February 9am–10.30am and Noosa Wednesday 29 February 9.30am– 11am. Bookings are essential.
