he new directional sign in Dick Caplick Park is already attracting attention. It allows Eumundi to promote the diversity and beauty of its history, culture, art and social fabric. The new sign was designed, manufactured and erected by a team of local artisans and council workers. It was made possible by Cr Paul Tatton who funded the sign and some improved seating for the park on behalf of the Eumundi community from the Division 10 councillor works allocation.

The sign is “a thing of beauty” but has information about key points around town including a locked box for current event posters, a map of the main streets with major tourist attractions, and images of our history and artistic culture. “The new sign replaces a fifty year old sign which used to tell people how to get out of town”, Discover Eumundi’s Wendy Birrell said. “It was obvious the sign was outdated, it looked tatty and didn’t

reflect the essence of Eumundi nor did it provide the visitor with any welcoming information on Eumundi. The new sign points out some of the special things that people may like to visit while they are here, whatever day of the week they arrive. Posters for community events are very welcome for the event box section of the sign. Please pop into Discover Eumundi with your poster,” she said. Sunshine Coast Council continued on page 4

ifteen years ago we moved to the Sunshine Coast; it was a bit barren, not too many homes once you left Noosaville, and lots of roundabouts (13 was a lot then). We settled into Doonan, started Villa Alba and tried to convince everyone that Doonan was a real name and a suburb as even locals asked us “Where exactly do you live?” Thank goodness for the landmark known as “the Doonan Servo”. We

always watched the development of the Rafter Estate and wondered how on earth people could live down that steep hill. Well, seven years later we went to see how it was developing (then six homes) and bought ourselves a 1-acre corner block, the smallest in the estate. Seven years and 30-odd homes later it is a peaceful haven and a wonderful place to call home.

The new meeting format seems to be working well and we were pleased to see so many members at the first of the Member Networking Nights at Joe’s Waterhole. Members were provided background and a status report on the Eumundi Servo, an update on the 2012 draft arts action plan and Glen Elmes MP presented recent statistics and information on opportunities for Eumundi from having a RV facility. The next meeting of the extended Management Committee will be held on Monday 19 March at Sala Thai at 6pm. Details of the April Member Networking Night will be included in the next Chamber News column. Council arborists requested that we protect the existing trees and underground tree root systems so machinery excavation was not allowed. There was also a 2m exclusion zone around the existing underground Telstra pit in front of the sign. This was one of my favourite projects this year – it was fun working with council staff and local artists to create something special for

Eumundi, my home town.” Jan Kelder from JK Hotmetal designed and manufactured the sign frame and decorative post caps. Some years ago Jan produced the sculpture Radian sited next to the administration building in Eumundi Square. Local artist Shane Christensen of Talking Tree Timber hand carved the hardwood timber posts. Shane is well known for his totem pole art in front of Eumundi’s Canecutters building.

The case for hiring a business coach

or many business owners, particularly first timers, you can reach a point in the life of your business where you ask “what do I do next?” This often comes at critical points such as where your workload has exceeded your staff capacity, or you have plans for expansion, or you’ve been so caught up in doing the work in your business the administration is a mess and you’ve no clear idea where you are or where you’re going. For me, it was all of the above so I bit the bullet and decided to hire a business coach. Choosing the right coach is very important; you need someone who not only gets your business but also gets you. You will be working closely with this person so there needs to be a rapport. That said, don’t write off someone whose style is different to yours. A good business coach is going to challenge you and take you out of your comfort zone. Your resistance to a new style might actually be exactly where you need to go. I found my coach through a recommendation from a friend and fellow business owner. You may need to interview yours, just as if you were interviewing a regular employee. Be clear what you want to achieve with your coach – every meeting you must set clear goals and be able to measure them. The six months or so I worked with a coach were invaluable. With their guidance I was able to see exactly where the business was and forward plan, resulting in the addition of staff and the streamlining of admin and business processes, freeing up my time for gaining more of the type of clients I really wanted, or being with my family. Business News Sunshine Coast business survey opens

he 10th Sunshine Coast Business Confidence Survey has opened with a focus on general business conditions across the entire Coast as well as a closer look at the resources boom. In addition to the baseline confidence questions, the March survey will measure whether local

businesses have seen any benefit from the resources boom, with questions targeting past benefits and potential future benefits. The anonymous online survey is available for participation up until Friday 30 March. Businesses wishing to participate in the survey can go to www.boardroombusiness.com.au.

Change of emphasis for All Things Christmas

Residents on the Sunshine Coast want more than the “roads, rates and rubbish” issues addressed, especially here in Division 9. My focus is on creating jobs, connecting communities and preserving the environment. We can create jobs without sacrificing the environment. Our natural environment should be viewed and valued as ‘green infrastructure’. It is our future, and the basis of our tourism industry. With so many natural attractions, I support plans for more facilities to cater for tourists, to boost our local economy. I support the environment levy to clearly identify those funds for the environment and I would lobby the State and Federal governments to match those funds. Other aims include: Assist local businesses to tender for Council. Urge developers to release some of the 6,700 approved lots to market and stop land banking to boost construction. Establish a hotline to report illegal dumping to Council. Provide more public off-leash and fenced areas for dogs. Support the establishment of more community gardens. Provide five Australian native plants per rate notice. Provide outdoor exercise equipment. Ensure no net losses to the environment in town planning. Investigate strategies to reduce wildlife casualties. Support more B & B’s and Home-stay licensing. Provide facilities for tourists and their motor homes. Include more public art and landscaping to promote local feel and identity.

Community News Back in the saddle at North Arm

Back to Buderim weekend 4–7 May

unshine Coast Riding for the Disabled (RDA) are celebrating their move into their new and permanent home on 24 acres at Monak Rd North Arm, following settlement on 10 February. The first of RDA’s therapeutic, educational and recreational programs recommenced on 20 February after almost seven months absence. The temporary building and a temporary arena have been set up to enable classes to start, and a covered horse area allows the horses to be out of the heat, sun and rain while waiting for their class. The paddocks have been fenced, water has been laid on and the horses are enjoying the freedom of many acres to frolic. RDA secretary Jan O’Halloran says none of this could have happened without the assistance of the band of dedicated

volunteers, including those pictured, who come to the centre to be part of the special bond with the horses and children in RDA’s program. Additional volunteers are needed so interested people are encouraged to visit to see at first hand the variety of opportunities where volunteers can make a difference. Jan says that the granting of a loan to purchase the property and getting the programs restarted has been due “to the wonderful support of individuals, businesses, families and the media in the quest for our new home; all donations over $2 are fully tax-deductible and income is definitely needed to re-establish the service more fully.” More information on the programs and services offered to school and community groups or individual families is at www. sunshinecoastrda.com.

he Qld Outdoor Recreation Fed, Equathon and the SEQ Brumby Assn Inc have teamed together to organise a Go Green free guided horse ride this Saturday 17 March. The ride follows a track featured in the recently released Council Guide to Horse Riding on the Sunshine Coast. The 2.5 hour ride

will leave the Noosa North Shore Equestrian Centre, Beach Rd, Noosa North Shore, at 9.15am, and will be guided by staff from Equathon. The Brumby Assn will be there with a brumby removed from the State Forest located between Gympie and Tin Can Bay. For more information contact 5485 3369.

This year is Buderim’s 150 years of white settlement celebrations and many families are tracing their history and participating in a myriad of activities organised for the year long celebration. Susan says her great grandmother was regarded as a fine horsewoman and was loved and respected by the Aboriginal people with whom her family resided. The family home at Buderim built

s a new arrival to the area I was asked to tell you of my first impressions of the Coast in 300 words or less. This has proved close to impossible. Since arriving in Australia 13 years ago from Sweden, I have lived and visited some amazing places in this glorious country, none quite as amazing as this place though. I could tell you of the breathtaking countryside and the rolling hills and green pastures, but this is your backyard so you most likely know already. I could go on about the diversity the Coast offers, the cosmopolitan Noosa versus the rural backdrop of the hinterlands, but again I assume this is not news to you. I could talk about the school the kids love, the great

local town, the exciting markets, the beautiful beaches down the road, or the climate; however, in the most polite way I can say it, this relentless humidity and the massive rainfalls will take some getting used to. I think what sums up my first impression of the Coast is best said with this juxtaposition: In Sydney as a newcomer it took me nine years to be invited into my next door neighbour’s house for a coffee, and yesterday my next door neighbour of just two months called in just to check if we were OK in the rain. Or I could just use the simple words of my seven-year-old: “Mum I really like Queensland; it’s got lots of nice kids in it.” I wholeheartedly agree.

Your Say Protecting our environment There are some council candidates in the local council elections who want to remove the environment levy. These candidates don’t understand “value for money” and what the levy produces for ratepayers. This levy helps to support more than 52 community groups. Under the Community Partnerships program contributions, there is a 314 per cent rate of return. Nearly 800 volunteers perform more than 27,000 hours of community service. The environment levy also assists in purchasing land to protect important habitats and for future generations to enjoy. Instead of scrapping the levy, I would seek a commitment from both the state and federal governments to match the total $9million levy. We have lost nearly 60 per cent of our natural vegetation so it is important we aim to protect as much as we can for the future. Now is the perfect time to seek an assurance from the state political parties to make this commitment. Most councils in SEQ have environment levies because they know the important outcomes they deliver. Brisbane, Ipswich, Gold

Coast, Logan and Redland City councils all have levies. I am very disappointed at the apparent lack of forward thinking from the mayoral candidates. I haven’t heard one word from any aspiring mayors to indicate some real political leadership on policies which would protect and enhance our environment. Jen Mazoudier Candidate, Division 9 The day mother nature made a “bad call” Well I have to say 21 February 2012 is a day Cooroy will remember for a while, and now that hinternoosa.com.au has moved on from the devastation caused by the storm I’d like to take the opportunity to thank everybody in the community for their support. This support has allowed us to relocate to 42 Maple St where it’s now business as usual for our team and we are so grateful. Ironically, from July 2011 to January 2012 our family enjoyed some time off and travelled around Australia and for four months saw no rain; but we did see water, and crocodiles (see photo)! Having had time to reflect on the market, it’s encouraging to return

to our region and see the dark economic clouds beginning to part despite the recent storms. Locally we believe we’re all well positioned to prosper in the current economic climate for reasons that don’t necessarily apply to other parts of the Coast and Queensland. Our local towns’ beautiful streetscapes, parking, great cafes and restaurants, together with country smiles rather than city frowns, complete the package and encourages us to shop locally. Behind the scenes our local clubs work tirelessly for our community and they deserve our support also. Noosa Pengari Steiner High School students collected 10 bags of rubbish, two chairs and a purple Buddha in a two-hour sweep on Clean Up Australia day. The initiative came from the school’s student council, who wanted to measurably improve local environs by contributing to Clean Up Australia Day.

chools are preparing to team up with scientists across Australia as part of a three-year national marine debris research and education program launched in Sea Week a week ago. Marine debris is largely made up of plastic, glass and fishing nets. It affects more than 270 species of animals worldwide, yet little is known about the full impact of marine debris on wildlife. Executive Director Earthwatch Australia Richard Gilmore says Earthwatch wanted to support the national survey and saw an opportunity to involve students and

teachers in this important work. “TeachWild provides Australians with the opportunity to learn about the global challenges of marine debris and to take part in hands-on field research,” he says. The program aims to survey and map the distribution of marine debris, identify major sources of debris and measure the impacts on wildlife. Data collected will contribute to a national marine debris database that highlights the extent of the issue and provides information to improve waste management and better protect marine life.

This isn’t a play full of one-liners, although there’s the odd one, but more a comedy that evolves through scheming and underhand deals. It’s set in the future and Australia is about to become a republic, but the vexed question of how to elect our first and subsequent presidents remains the stumbling block. Should the government of the day simply appoint a nonpowered president, a ceremonial puppet, or should the nation vote and elect one with power? Somehow the outcome falls between the two stools with a disastrous result – an extraordinarily eccentric president with overwhelming power. Please note that the second Saturday, 24 March, coincides with the Queensland “thank heavens it’s over for another three years” night, but we promise that Happy Birthday Mr President will be a bright spot if you want some humorous relief. good number of locals turned up for Clean Up Australia Day Sunday 4 March. Eumundi coordinator Annie Wilson said it was a better turn out than last year. “It was good to see people coming back again and to have families sign up,” she said. Volunteers commented on how tidy they found Eumundi following a market day. Cleaner uppers found higher levels of rubbish on the outskirts and on a drive around picked up some bigger items including a mattress. A few people picked up free newspapers around the town and we are glad to say none were Eumundi Green which we have delivered into mailboxes.

he Eumundi Chamber of Commerce used the morning to launch its “Keep Australia Beautiful – Adopt-a-Road” initiative supported by Keep Australia Beautiful (Queensland) and Sunshine Coast Council. Chamber secretary Kerrie Bryant-Adams said it was heartening to see so many volunteers come out early on a Sunday morning with their families to support this new initiative and the Chamber’s agreement to “adopt” the 1.9km stretch of road from the Strawberry Flats roundabout to the Caplick Way/Eumundi-Noosa Road roundabout. “It is obvious that community members are passionate about their town and how it presents to its visitors and tourists,” Kerrie said. “Twenty-five volunteers supported the first ‘clean up’ and our pledge is to have one clean up per quarter. A big thank you to everyone for their willingness to pick up all sorts of weird and wonderful items of rubbish - enough to fill a mini-skip in three short hours.” Hungry volunteers enjoyed a barbecue at Caplick Park courtesy of Eumundi Meats. t was a busy morning in Verrierdale too where Division 9 candidate Linda Morrell joined the locals. Linda said six bags of rubbish were collected in a small area around the junction of Verrierdale Rd and Doonan Bridge East Rd. “This area is a rural beauty and should be kept that way. Illegal litter disposal and dumping is a huge problem to the Sunshine Coast, especially since 2009,” she said. “Discarded bottles, mostly broken with jagged edges, present a huge issue for wild life and people walking. Rubbish is also a potential fire hazard.” Linda said from speaking to constituents, she believes most ratepayers desperately want two free tip vouchers and two roadside pick-ups per annum. “As a councillor for Division 9 I will take a stand on the disposal of rubbish. I will promote care and attention to our beautiful countryside,” she said.

Autumn in Eumundi A market place for blooms Matt Popplewell

ou could be forgiven for casting your eyes on the numerous tasty and colourful stalls and not the surrounding gardens on a Wednesday morning as you peruse the Eumundi markets. You may even think that the strong delightful perfume of the orange Jasmine was coming from one of the stalls. More than likely it was coming from the surrounding hedge and March is a mighty fine time to see it in flower and have all your senses smacked by its qualities. It’s not alone. The orange Jasmine or Murraya paniculata is just one of a selection of beauties intertwined in our very own Eumundi Village gardens. Not to be eclipsed is the Cassia, a bright yellow flower that simply roars for idolisation. If purple is your colour, then Tibouchina never fails to impress and is a common sight at this time of year. A more subtle blue will be seen seeping from the buds of the Duranta as it stretches out its umbrella to splatter us not only with colour, but shade.

Celebrate Food Celebrate St Patrick’s Day Fran Maguire

rowing up among Anglo-Irish families, Saturday lunches at one friend’s home stay in my mind. I’m not sure if that’s because I was shocked then or in retrospect by the full fat content. Inevitably the meal was thick slices of fried bacon, cabbage fried in the bacon fat and mashed potatoes with double cream, followed by full fat ice cream with, that’s right, double cream. Thankfully my arteries seem to have survived the onslaught. Celebrate St Patrick’s Day this Saturday 17 March with these traditional dishes, or enjoy them as an autumn treat. Slainte!

Colcannon Serves 5

he name of this dish translates from the Gaelic “cal ceannann” as “white-headed cabbage”, and there are probably many more recipes than there are counties in Ireland. It can be made with or without bacon and onion replacing the leeks; and if you prefer a lower fat version, you could try cooking the leeks in a well-flavoured vegetable or chicken stock. It is a great autumn dish made with curly kale that is around now and partners well with pork sausages or roast pork. Ingredients 3-4 slices middle bacon, rind removed, chopped 1½ cups Savoy cabbage or kale, shredded 500g potatoes 2 leeks, green and white parts, well rinsed and finely chopped Milk Salt and ground white pepper Method In a large frying pan cook bacon

and cabbage until bacon starts to crisp and cabbage wilts; keep warm. (If not using bacon cook cabbage in boiling water for 5 minutes, drain and keep warm). Boil potatoes until soft, remove from heat and drain. Meanwhile, just cover leeks with milk in a pan and simmer until soft. Season and mash potatoes well, stir in cooked leeks and milk. Fold in the cabbage and heat through.

Bridget’s soda bread Ingredients 250g plain flour 1 level tspn bicarbonate of soda ½ tspn baking powder 150ml buttermilk, approx. Method Preheat oven to 200C. Mix together dry ingredients in a bowl. Stir in enough buttermilk

until you have a consistency that can be shaped into a round. Place round on a lightly greased baking tray and bake 25-30 mins until golden brown. This is best served hot with golden syrup for a tea time treat or with chopped herbs in the mix it makes a quick and easy accompaniment to soup.

Bridget’s potato cakes Method Preheat oven to 180C. Mix left over mashed potato with a pinch of salt and enough flour until stiff enough to roll into small, flat cakes. Roll pieces of mix into walnut sized pieces and then roll out until 5mm thick. Cook in the oven until golden brown, about 20 minutes.

This was a Sunday tea time treat in my home, using up mashed potato from lunch, served hot dripping with butter or topped with grated Cheddar cheese. The potato cakes pictured were made with rice flour for a wheat-free version, or you could try potato flour.

Serve meals with a pint of Guinness and perhaps a witty limerick.

errierdale residents Corrine Sause and David Parker have created a haven for lovers of colourful, quality jewellery in their Eumundi and two Noosa shops. A commitment to timeless elegance, style and affordability underpins the drive behind the family business Pearls for Girls. With a myriad of options available for buyers, the stores offer gold and silver pieces featuring pearls, turquoise and other precious stones. Art lovers can also be enticed by David’s paintings which decorate the shops’ walls. With so many in-store options for jewellery lovers, it is hard to imagine that Pearls for Girls started out as a modest market stall 14 years ago. Corrine moved to the Sunshine Coast from Victoria in 1998 and within three weeks of arriving she had begun trading as a stall holder at the Eumundi markets. Before long, the business woman in Corinne picked up on an untapped market on the Coast. She noticed that there were no specialised pearl jewellery stores in the region, which she believes was due to a widespread assumption that pearls had passed their heyday.

“I had always had a passion for pearls,” she says, “but there was just no one doing them on the Coast!” Upon this discovery Corinne was inspired to set up another stall, this time dedicated to selling unique pearl jewellery. Demand for Corrine’s designs was strong enough that she sold her other market business and dedicated her time to building a name for herself in the jewellery world. After two years Corrine and David decided to open their first retail shop. With a great deal of support from family and friends, they were able to continue to run the market stall and the shop simultaneously. It is this support

from loved ones that has aided the growth of Pearls for Girls over the years. Corinne and David’s children have all played a part in the operation of the business at some stage, whether in design, jewellery making or customer service. Corrine and David have come a long way since the first market stall 14 years ago and Corinne says the focus now is on becoming better, not bigger. “We want to be more creative and more stand-out, unique,” Corrine says, adding that in terms of expansion they have “been there and done that.” While they haven’t had a stall at the markets for two years now, Corrine says that many clients still travel

from Brisbane or interstate looking for them. Opening up a retail space in Eumundi has allowed Pearls for Girls to maintain a presence in the town. Corrine and David’s dedication to bettering their business is evident in the amount of time they spend on the road: five months of each year is spent visiting various Australian and international trade shows. February saw Corinne and David travel to Arizona where they sourced a large selection of Native American turquoise that they will use in a collection of jewellery, art pieces in their own right. The Eumundi store is Corrine’s favourite. She says that the sense of community she feels in the town is heart warming. When their shop flooded in the recent spell of bad weather, Corrine says “we had lots of phone calls from community members asking if the shop was okay and offering help – locals are always looking out for one another.” Her affection for the town that nurtured her business from its inception is clear: “Eumundi has been good to us,” Corrine says. Our valued volunteers

Welcome to the team from Mountain Creek State High School who are new volunteers on the car parking roster, Ms Smith (left), Tiana Browne, Brad Bliss and Mrs Jones. The students from the school's Skill Centre have recently volunteered their time to work at the market car park. This opportunity gives the students an avenue to develop skills in the workplace and enables them to make a contribution to their school community. The students are currently enrolled in Certificate II in Workplace Practices and working on the car park allows them the opportunity to meet some of the course requirements. The students enjoyed their new experiences and on returning to school gave very positive reports to staff and other students.

Sunshine Coast Oriana Choir has been a regular team on the car parking roster for several years raising funds for their European tour. Sunshine Coast residents will be able to enjoy some of the music from their tour repertoire at a concert on Saturday 31 March at 2pm at the Lake Kawana Centre. Enquiries Ph 5456 1414.

Environment and Outdoors Awards for Verrierdale firies

ten years. The Verrierdale brigade meets every fourth Saturday of the month at 2pm. Visitors interested in joining are welcome.

Welcome event for firies first officers

Doonan Fire Brigade members welcome visiting first officers from 15 brigades from the Kingaroy and Nanango area ahead of a Sunshine Coast first officers forum. The forum hosted by regional area director Gary Seaman at the Caloundra training room is an annual event to provide upskilling and networking for volunteers from 27 brigades across the region.

ith a couple of wet years on the Sunshine Coast, it is very easy to become complacent about the potential danger of bushfires. Recent events in other states are timely reminders that fire can be unpredictable, and unforgiving, but also preventable. This space will be used to keep our community informed about all things fire related. It may be used to publicise seasonal changes to fire permit requirements, or to seek public input on hazard reduction and local action plans. Occasionally we will revert to some shameless self-promotion. As a volunteer organisation, we need to attract new members, and raising our public profile is part of that ongoing process. Many readers may not be aware that rural fire brigades respond to a wide variety of incidents, from road crashes and floods, to bush and structure fires. The last couple of months have been fairly quiet for all local brigades. Doonan has responded to some small stack burns that have escaped up adjacent trees. Both Eumundi and Doonan responded to the recent storm

emergency in Cooroy, and all brigades have continued to assist local residents with hazard reduction and stack burns. Here are a few recent observations worth sharing:  A small faded street number may work fine for the postie during the day. But may not work in smoke at night. If we can’t find it, we can’t fight it.  Fires at night, especially near main roads, WILL generate Triple O calls. Having a fire permit registered with “Firecom” avoids any unnecessary turn-outs.  Even the greenest tree close to a fire will quickly dry out and eventually catch fire. Use Triple O for all Emergency Calls. Be wary of insurers that:  Discourage individuals from making a claim by telling them that they haven’t got cover;  Fail to properly investigate claims;  Undervalue claims;  Hide in policy fine print; and,  Take too long to pay your claim. Top five tips for flood victims:  Lodge a claim (even if you are not sure if you have cover) - make sure the claim includes as much detail as possible;  Take photographs, (document the time and circumstances of each shot where possible);  Record the timing of events, including when the water entered your property;  Create a detailed list of damaged items; and,  If your claim is rejected or you’re being messed about, be sure to seek legal advice as soon as possible.

Nature Notes and Outdoors Jumping Ants Kon Hepers

n our “garden” and surrounding bushland there are plenty of things that can bite, sting, scratch and just generally annoy. Top of our list are various insects, and the worst of these are the Jumping Ants. Also called Jumper Ants and Inch Ants, these aggressive insects do not tolerate anyone stepping anywhere near their nest and advance in jumps of about an inch (hence that name) to inflict a most painful sting. These ants, Myrmecia nigrocincta (meaning black-belted ants) are about 15–17mm long and have very large eyes and fearsome mandibles in front which are used not for biting but for grasping their prey while they deliver their paralysing sting from the rear of their gaster. (In school we all learnt that all insects have three main parts – head, thorax and abdomen. Ants have similar structures but they are called head, mesosoma and gaster). Their nests are fairly inconspicuous small holes in the ground amongst leaf litter and the ants themselves are most active on dry, sunny days. There are about twenty species of ants belonging to the genus Myrmecia in southeast Queensland, including the giant Bull Ants (correctly Bulldog Ants because they hang on so tenaciously).

A sting from Jumping Ants can cause varied reactions ranging from mild irritation to potentially fatal anaphylactic shock. In most cases the symptoms are swelling of the affected limb with an insufferable itch around the site of the sting for three or four days. I’ve been stung many times and have not developed immunity, certainly not to the pain which some experts class as the most severe inflicted by any insects. I have also been stung by the giant Bull Ants and was intrigued why the pain from these big ants, up to almost twice the size of the Jumping Ants, is not as bad. The ant pictured scored twice. First when she stung me on the ankle when I stood near her nest, then when I was careless in releasing her back to the nest after the photo session. A few days later the nest was abandoned, probably moved to another location where they can again catch me by surprise.

Lessons for Life CQU expansion launch

pectacularly coloured eye baths will be just one of the beautiful and varied personal collections in Collectibles from A–Z. The public opening is on 24 March from 1–4pm at 18 Mitchell St. Bruce Evans is displaying his collection of eye baths. He said it was easy to collect eye baths because of their small size and he found it simply to collect beautiful specimens during his travels, while others have been given to him by family members. Another special display is by Australian Ballet senior soloist and Ballet Master of the company’s Dancers Company from 1971 to 1991, Mark Brinkley of Nambour. Mark has kindly loaned his personal memorabilia of posters, autographed books, and ballet shoes, collected during a remarkable career which coincided with an energetic period for the nation’s ballet company. During his career he danced with world ballet greats, Margot Fonteyn, Rudolf Nureyev and Robert Helpmann in productions around the world.

Admission to the opening is $5 which includes afternoon tea. The collections can also be viewed throughout April at museum opening times of Wednesdays and Saturdays from 1–4pm, admission $3. Further information 5441 2083.

s I write this, Apple has released the latest update for the iPad. But don’t call it the iPad 3 or iPad HD, it’s just the New iPad. If you don’t already own an iPad, the latest one is pretty funky. Boasting what really is a spectacular new screen with a resolution of 2048 x 1536 at 264 pixels per inch, it is sharper than your top of the range High-def TV and movies look amazing on it. It also has a faster processor and an upgrade of the terrible, useless rear camera to a usable 5 megapixel. If you do already have an iPad, compelling enough reasons to upgrade may not be there. doesn’t have any support for removable storage like SD card slots, the front camera is still as terrible as ever and the 4G feature will not work in Australia until at least 2015 as the spectrum it works in hasn’t been auctioned off to ISPs in Australia yet (Telstra’s new 4G network operates on a part of the spectrum the new iPad doesn’t support). To top that off, it’s slightly heavier and slightly thicker than the iPad 2.
