“Hinternoosa had been highly recommended to me by another professional in the field and it is a pleasure to pass this recommendation on to others. Kess was genuine in her expressed admiration of the property’s qualities and in her assessment of its deficiencies. She arrived at a market appraisal which was nearly exactly the price achieved. To the surprise of many, the property was sold prior to auction in a very difficult market. Kess provided calm and logical advice leading to the sale and it is clear that she was part of a very professional team. Many thanks,” Peg, Happy Doonan Seller

Editor's Taking Eumundi to the world WIN with your favourite photos Desk What does Eumundi and its environs mean to you? Beautiful hinterland;

W

e’ve all chosen this little pocket of the world to live, work or send our kids to school because it’s beautiful here. The location is perfect (apart from the mould), creative energy boundless and the people are good – this all plays a part in making Eumundi special – and unique. This issue, we’re celebrating the people who keep our beautiful community’s heart beating - our volunteers. These are the people you see at council meetings, town festivals, school tuckshops, planting trees, picking up rubbish and running workshops. They keep this community that we have chosen to live amongst healthy and strong. Many of us are time poor so volunteering isn’t an option. But volunteering can be as simple as offering someone a smile, a “Hi”, sharing an opinion or simply thanking those who do have time and are willing to share it. Without our volunteers Eumundi would just be a pretty postcard. Sacha Hamilton-MacLaren editor@eumundigreen.com.au

Business News Building development on the rise

D

irector of Development Services Julie Edwards, said the Sunshine Coast Council’s Development Indicators Report provides an in-depth look into development activity on the coast. “The report profiles the volume of development and contains information on town planning, subdivision, building and construction activity. The total number of development applications lodged in the first quarter of 2012 was 2,477,” Ms Edwards said. She goes on to explain that the building application figures for construction on the Coast in the first quarter have an estimated value of over $200 million. “The statistics for the number of lots created shows a significant increase from the same time last year,” she said. “Three hundred and three lots have been released in this

quarter compared to 202 at the same time last year. Each new lot represents a potential new house, industrial or commercial property. “We are also seeing an increase in the number of approved plans of subdivisions, a 52 per cent increase compared to the last quarter.” This positive sign of activity in the real estate industry is the increase in the number of building searches undertaken. There were 761 building searches completed in the current quarter compared to 635 in the last quarter. Ms Edwards feels that the development applications that have been approved or are still in progress reflect that the Sunshine Coast is continuing to attract a diverse range of new businesses, major activities and community interest developments. The Development Indicators Report is available every quarter at www.sunshinecoast.qld.gov.au.

O

ur Business Circle is an online networking and mentoring resource to support and grow small business across the Sunshine Coast. Developed by five leading local businesses: Ferguson Cannon Lawyers, UHY Haines Norton Chartered Accountants, dtb! Advertising, Jo Harris Consulting and OMC Connect, Our Business Circle is set to create a new benchmark for businesses to access key information and network support, enabling them to make better decisions for the growth of their business. Sunshine Coast Council Investment and local business support manager, Alex Lever-Shaw said that Our Business Circle appeared to be an innovative way for businesses on the Sunshine Coast to support and learn from each other via the web. “By sunshine coast businesses working with each other we really do have the capability to take on much bigger markets then we are used to,” Mr. Lever-Shaw said. According to the spokesperson for the companies who developed Our Business Circle, Michael Molloy managing director of dtb! Advertising, Our Business Circle has the potential to transform the way businesses share information and network on the sunshine coast. “Our Business Circle enables business owners to access information, develop networks and request advice online, in their own time. We want businesses to be successful on the sunshine coast, and Our Business Circle we believe fills a gap in supporting business.” Businesses simply need to register online at www. ourbusinesscircle.com.au to start building their circle of influence. Community News Sunshine Coast Council thanks volunteers

I

n celebration of National Volunteer Week, Sunshine Coast Council applauds the dedication of its many volunteers who generously donate their time to make a difference in the community. One such volunteer that Council would like to thank is Ms Jude McCourt who has been volunteering her time at the Noosa Regional Gallery for more than four years. Council gallery curator Nina Shadforth said volunteers play a very important role in the many community programs that rely on their valuable assistance. “This week we would like to publicly thank our volunteers, such as Jude who initially started working at the Noosa Regional Gallery family days serving the

barbecue,” she said. “If you have the pleasure of meeting Jude McCourt you will quickly learn that she is a person who is keen to make a difference in her community.” Ms McCourt said there are many benefits to volunteering, like meeting people and filling the void left from leaving full time employment. “Working at the gallery makes me feel privileged as I’m often the first to view the latest exhibition or, even better, witness the installation process. “I have also recently started helping at the Pomona Old Railway Gallery and have undertaken several other fulfilling volunteer roles including fundraising for animal welfare and assisting in the aged care industry.”

Cooroy Library says thanks

News in brief Noosa Biosphere is looking for interested individuals to fill vacancies on a number of the Community Sector Boards and the Governance Board. Noosa Biosphere Ltd chair Dr Sue Davis said, “The Noosa Biosphere is well established and has a lot to offer volunteers; it is a good opportunity for new and existing residents to find out about the area, engage in the community and meet people. “While we are a group concerned with the environment, we focus on sustainable development, education and community engagement activities and it is vital to have the support and involvement of the broader community.” Applications open on Friday 18 May for three weeks. For further details, see www.noosabiosphere. org.au. Belli’s next Old-Time Dance will be held on Saturday 9 June at 7.30pm. Can you dig it? A community garden for Eumundi!

Y

ou may recall that two Eumundi Greens ago I wrote a column about a community garden for Eumundi. The community garden would be a place for everyone to come and meet, laugh and play in the sunshine and get their hands dirty while growing their own vegies and sharing their bounty with friends and family. Since that article, I’ve been inundated with interested local folk who are keen to get the garden underway and join other Sunshine Coast community gardens like Cooroy, Cotton Tree, Yandina, Peregian and Maleny. I’m not sure where the garden will go, what it will look like or when we’ll start – but I do

know that there’s a helluva lot of people keen to get down in the soil and get this garden underway. And I do know that we need the garden to be centrally located in town, and it needs the support of local community organisations and the council to kick start and support it. So if you’re like me and you think a community garden for Eumundi is a great idea, then let’s get this happening! If you are interested, I think step one is to get a bunch of people together and figure out where to go from here. Please get in contact with me via email, trentharvison@me.com, or on 0458 128 020. Lets get digging!

Community News A big thank you to our big community hearts

T

o celebrate last week’s National Volunteer Week we gave community organisations the opportunity to say thank you to their dedicated helpers. The Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre: “We’d like to thank founders Col and Gill Brownhill for their constant vision, passion and commitment. For 15 years their labour of love has inspired many others and their selfless effort has given our community a tremendous asset.”

“On behalf of the Australian Body Art Organising Committee, a huge thank you to our volunteers for being such willing participants in this year’s event promoting the arts reputation of Eumundi. We would not have been able to stage the magnificent Australian Body Art Carnivale 2012 without our volunteers – some of whom worked from before dawn until after dark. We greatly appreciate your support and assistance.”

“Good Shepherd Lutheran College has many dedicated volunteers who make our College a better place. We give heartfelt thanks to them all – from our classroom helpers and library assistants to Parents & Friend and Shepherd’s Fair Committee members. Karen Lunn and Robyn Hill are a wonderful example of this dedication. For the past 10 years they have coordinated the Weekend Netball Competition, giving up every weekend and one afternoon after school for half of every year! Thank you to all our volunteers; we appreciate everything you do for us.”

“Noosa & District Landcare would like to thank all the volunteers who spend countless hours of their free time to protect the environment. Our appreciation goes out to the 14 CNC Bushcare groups, 45 Waterwatch volunteers, 30 nursery and garden volunteers, and our office and Jack-ofall-Trades volunteers.” “The Eumundi State School P&C would love to thank all of their amazing volunteers. We have awesome parents who help us out in our Tuckshop at our Arts In Action Day and with our Mothers, Fathers Day and Christmas Stalls. The world would be a sadder place if it weren’t for the generous hearts who so kindly donate their time to help the world go round.”

Your Say Thank you stallholders and Cherrie Once again Eumundi has held a solemn and moving community walk and service as a tribute to our war heroes. ANZAC Day this year fell on a market day, so thanks must go to the stallholders who were cooperative and respectful of the occasion. These events don’t just happen as there are many dignitaries to contact and invite, sound equipment to organise, and singers, speakers, community walk participants, street closures, catering, wreaths etc. to arrange – the list is long. Special thanks must go to

Cherrie Orr for the many hours and organising skills she put into this event, which took almost 12 months to achieve. For her dedication and hard work, Eumundi would like to say “Thank You” to Cherrie and let her know her endeavours are very much appreciated. Best wishes, Chris Congratulations Body Art Congratulations to all involved in the Body Art Event last weekend. It was superb, and the community inter-activity bonus terrific. We were with a group of

Victorians who unanimously declared it a “world class”showing. The artists who worked feverishly against a competition time frame came up with diverse works of art – centred around an under the sea theme. The models patiently offered their bodies and tender skin to the whims of the artistic. And what emerged on stage several hours later at judgement time was an animated display of unique imaginative and sensational body art. Whovever came up with this wonderful idea deserves a painted medal to hang on their body. Well done organisers. Sue Trethowan-Jones

thing to foster in a school and the best thing about Eumundi is the teachers. Many would also credit this incredible growth spurt to the arrival five years ago of principal Mick and deputy principal Mark Kross. Their passion and dedication to the running of the school are very evident; they are approachable to parents and kids (they know every kid’s name) and they have created a warm and fulfilling environment for their teachers. Mick says all these factors feed each other. It’s the “Tree of growth”. He explains, “the more kids you get, the more money you get, the more resources you get, the better teachers you attract the more things you can do.” With no limit on the number of kids who can enrol at Eumundi State School, it would seem the tree is healthy and set to grow very tall. Where once the village of Eumundi attracted young families to the school, now it seems the school is playing a big part in growing our community.

More kids need library cards

tudent numbers just keep growing at Eumundi State School. In only a couple of years enrolments have jumped from 380 to 510 children. People are coming from all over the Coast to send their kids here, and many new students have moved from interstate. School principal Mick Connors attests this to a number of things: the beautiful school grounds, the extra curricular activities on offer, plus the fact the kids get an excellent education in english, maths and science. Mick says, “We try to focus on the whole child, give them the basics in english and maths – but it’s a holistic thing. That’s why we’re successful. Quite often we are a good option for people who don’t want the private school fees, but want that high standard of education.” Mick tells of Eumundi State School’s very high socioeconomic rank and says, “We are very fortunate in that we attract people from good families with nice kids.” Mick says Eumundi has always been a good school, but the best

edge and are all designed and made by the women. You’ll find their stalls at The Original Eumundi Markets on Saturdays.

The Preps work up an appetite with some yoga. Yenny Stromgren of Dirt by Earth is a professional photographer from Melbourne who now calls Eumundi home. She has turned her passion for taking pictures into amazing wood-engraved jewellery and funky pieces for the home.

Noosaville State School’s Preps celebrated Mothers Day with an outing at the Eumundi Markets. To make a special lunch for their mums, the kids went shopping at the markets for fresh produce that was then transformed into a feast by chef dads: Paul Ray and Paul Longmate and groundsman Dave.

Wow – what a weekend!

Last weekend's Australian Body Art Carnivale at Eumundi was a great success. There were great art works, funky fashions, lots of visitors, tight competitions, and plenty of colour and fun in perfect autumn weather. The Carnivale's organising committee is grateful to the dozens of competitors and their models, the judges, the volunteers, the organisations and individuals who donated cash and other prizes to bring you and our many visitors an outstanding weekend program. We particularly wish to acknowledge our local alliance partners without whom the chance to promote the colour and creativity of Eumundi to the world could not happen: Eumundi Combined Community Organisation Ltd, Eumundi Historical Assn, Eumundi & District Community Assn, Eumundi Chamber of Commerce, Original Eumundi Markets and Discover Eumundi Heritage and Visitor Centre. Arts Scene Indee Theatre News John Burls

Happy as they board The Flying Scotsman but afterwards....? A scene from Night Train to Terror.

T

his weekend the School of Arts Theatre will be transformed into Euston Station, London in the late 30s, for the staging of Night Train to Terror. This Sherlock Holmes mystery thriller is edge-of-the-seat fun with Holmes and his associate, Dr Watson, on the heels of master jewel thief Bernard Heinkel. As they board The Flying Scotsman they’re joined in Carriage 10 by Lady Coombes and her niece, Madeline Vickers, returning to Edinburgh with the world’s largest diamond. Also aboard is Chief Inspector Lestrade of New Scotland Yard, purportedly on a fishing trip, a handful of petty criminals and a coffin in the luggage van. Before the overnight express reaches its destination Holmes and Watson have to solve two assaults and two murders. The strong cast includes Luke Lanham as Sherlock Holmes, Keith Souter as Dr Watson, Sean McBride as Chief Inspector Lestrade, Lindley Moon as Lady Coombes, Ruth Montgomery as

Madeline Vickers, Bill Hastings as Bernard Heinkel (alias Monty Armstrong), Josh Watson as the carriage attendant, Inger Vinogradov as Miss Schumanne, and Anita Tilly as Mrs Tanby. The foyer has been decorated as a Railway Refreshment Room and Railway Bar. Refreshment room prices, while not in the 30s, have certainly gone into reverse with tea and coffee at $1 and delicious pies at $2, and delicacies such as egg and lettuce sandwiches on the menu. The stage set is a one third section of a full-sized steam-train carriage, designed and built by noted Indee actor Eddie Ellis. Performances are 7.30pm tomorrow Friday 25 and Saturday 26 May, and Friday 1 June and Saturday 2 June, plus matinees this Sunday 27 May at 2pm and Sunday 3 June at 5pm. Tickets, opening night all $20, other nights $20, concessions $18 and Sundays $18. Bookings on 5472 8200 or go to eumundilivetheatre.com.

Celebrate Food Cooking with turmeric Fran Maguire

M

ay is Rotary Bowelscan month, so it is timely to discover that a study is underway in the UK to investigate whether curcumin, found in turmeric, can be used to help treat bowel cancer. A group of researchers at the Experimental Cancer Medicine Centre (ECMC) in Leicester, led by Beating Bowel Cancer Medical Board chair Professor Will Steward, is carrying out the study.

Professor Steward said the research is at a very early stage but the prospect that curcumin might increase the sensitivity of cancer cells to chemotherapy is exciting. www.beatingbowelcancer.org/ news/may2012/ The medicinal value of turmeric has long been known to the ayurvedic community. The Eumundi Medicine Man says turmeric is known as Haridra in Sanskrit, the name of the goddess

who takes away disease. He said research into the benefits of turmeric has been in place among ayurvedic practitioners for years and they find it helpful in many inflammatory disorders and all aspects of oncogenesis. Health claims aside, turmeric adds flavour and colour to dishes and is found in many curry recipes. Originally from southeast Asia, it can be grown in our sub-tropical climate. Ursula Schwarz says

fresh and powdered turmeric have quite different tastes. She advises caution when dried turmeric is called for in a recipe. She suggests either dry and grind your own (peel, slice and dry fresh turmeric in the sun, then store in airtight containers and grind when required) or use half the specified amount of turmeric powder. Ursula shares her recipe for turmeric chicken broth.

Turmeric chicken broth

Cambodian curry paste

Ingredients 1 chicken breast, thinly sliced Vegetable oil 1 leek, finely sliced 1 ltr chicken stock, home made if available Handful of coriander leaves Salt For paste 1 heaped tblsp each of: Coriander root and stalks Shredded peeled ginger Shallots French shallots Fresh turmeric Garlic

Turmeric gives the yellow colour to this fragrant Khmer paste that is used in many Cambodian curries. In Queensland we’re fortunate to be able to grow these herbs and spices in our gardens or find them fresh at the local markets. And if you’re ever wondering what to do with a kaffir lime fruit, a little bit adds zest here.

mortar with a good pinch of salt, pound into a coarse paste. Fry the paste in a tsp of oil until fragrant, not brown. Add leek while frying paste. Pour the chicken stock on to the spice mix. Bring to boil. Add the chicken. Simmer for one minute. Turn off the heat; stand for a few minutes; serve with coriander leaves; season to taste.

Method Add paste ingredients to a

Ingredients Peel and roughly chop the first four ingredients 50g ginger 40g garlic 8 lemongrass stalks 100g French shallots 50g turmeric, peeled 4 kaffir lime leaves, shredded 1 strip kaffir lime zest 2 tsp fermented fish paste (substitute shrimp paste) 1 medium hot green chilli, chopped Method Add ingredients one at a time to a mortar, pounding as added. Alternatively put all ingredients in a small food processor with 2 tbsp water. Process until a smooth paste. This amount makes enough for two curries; unused paste can be

frozen for use later. Use in a curry with meat, vegetables and coconut milk. For example:  heat 2 tbsp vegetable oil in a wok and brown 600g cubed pork or chicken in batches; set aside  heat 1 tbsp oil in the wok, add half mix of paste, fry gently for 2-3 minutes until fragrant  Return meat to pan with 300ml water  Partially cover, simmer gently 1 hour, taking care it doesn’t dry out  Add 40g grated coconut, 1 small cubed pineapple, 1 small chopped eggplant  Simmer uncovered 10 minutes  Add 2 tbsp fish sauce, 1 tbsp tamarind water, stir in leaves of 1 bunch Thai basil  Season and serve

Turmeric tea with ginger This tasty tea is credited with keeping away colds and flu – it’s certainly a winter warmer. Ingredients 2 cups water 1 tsp fresh ginger, grated 1 tsp turmeric, finely chopped 1 tblsp maple syrup Juice of 1/2 fresh lemon Method Bring the water to a boil in a pan, add ginger and turmeric. Reduce heat, simmer gently 10 minutes. Strain into a cup, add the maple syrup and lemon. Stir to combine, drink immediately.

inter may make you want to huddle up indoors with some comfort food but the colder temperatures make this an excellent time of year to work on your fitness. While it’s important for us to slow down and rest during winter, there is no need to come to a screeching halt! Moderate exercise will give your immune system a boost, meaning less chance of catching a cold or bug that’s doing the rounds. Below are some winter workout suggestions:  Always have a longer warm-up in the winter to prevent injuries

Hire an exercise bike or treadmill to use at home  Head down to the beach for a walk or run; it is always much warmer and brighter than the hinterland  Take your workout gear to work and go for a lunchtime run  Hire an exercise professional to design a short workout for you to do at home  Join a group exercise class at the park or pool for extra motivation  Get the whole family involved in a bike ride or bush walk Imagine how good you will feel when spring has sprung and you are already fit, toned and healthy!

In the Spotlight Exemplary Eumundi volunteers Fran Maguire In celebration of National Volunteer Week last week, two very active members of our diverse volunteer community tell us why they do it.

T

he next time you’re at a Eumundi event, take a look around. The chances are you’ll see two familiar faces working in the background: regular community volunteers Tricia Chapman (right) and Ann Kennedy. As the conversation bounces between the two women, they reveal similar motivations for volunteering. Ann says she and her husband John, who she met at school, come from a NSW community like Eumundi and they wanted to live in a similar small town. After working and bringing up their family of three in Sydney and four years exploring Australia by caravan, they settled in their current home about 10 years ago. Tricia and her husband David, who emigrated from England in the late 60s, moved to Eumundi in 2000 after living in Sydney with

their two children. “Our family doesn’t live here and unless we volunteered how would we meet people?” Tricia says. “We get so much more back than we give because we’ve met so many people working in the community. Eumundi is sensational for people you don’t meet anywhere else.” Asked if they give some tasks a higher priority than others, both agree that all the volunteering they do is important.

Eumundi & District Community Assn Inc

“I’m a member of the Rural Fire Brigade,” Ann says, “and Tricia’s been an active member.” “When I turned 70, I went into the ‘back room’ and stopped attending fires, and let younger ones through,” Tricia laughs. “We’re both support staff – Ann is the catering officer – and we represent the brigade at events like the ANZAC Day walk.” Ann says volunteering in Eumundi isn’t exclusive to retirees;

younger people get involved too, but she’d like to see more of them. “I understand they’re busy with their everyday lives,” she says. “But get involved with what your kids do, that’s what we did when our kids were young.” “As a pair of hands you can do something,” Tricia interjects. “Just think what you can do, whether it’s to keep time at a game, do the sausage sizzle or the washing up.” Ann says it washes off, that their children are involved in their kids’ schools too. “I’m sure none of us, in a community like this, is likely to be found dead after a week – someone would miss us,” Tricia reflects. Ann concludes: “We’re not going to retire, we’re just going to keep going.” We should also acknowledge David Chapman and John Kennedy who are both regular volunteers; Dave was a “slave” for the body art program. John is the third officer with the Fire Brigade and he is the “someone” who oils the seats near memorial trees.

Farewell local hero and champion of wildlife Col Brownhill On 10 May the wildlife of the Sunshine Coast lost a great champion in Col Brownhill. Col lost the struggle with motor neurone disease which was diagnosed last year. Col and his wife Gill started the Eumundi Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre on the Eumundi Noosa Rd in 1997. The facility has treated over 20,000 birds, marsupials and reptiles suffering the ravages of cars, disease or predators with Col and Gill inspiring hundreds of volunteers to join with them in caring for wildlife. The couple has worked tirelessly to create a rehabilitation centre that would do the best possible job for its patients and give them time to heal. The Centre has a higher than average recovery rate due to its philosophy of care. The couple has funded much of the improvements in infrastructure at the Centre and our association has been proud to support their work over the years. Farewell Col, you have left an extraordinary legacy. Thanks to Ann White for assistance with tribute.

Nature Notes and Outdoors Bandicoots Kon Hepers

Farewell Col Brownhill, champion of the Coast’s wildlife Ann White

O

A

lmost every morning we find a new lot of holes dug in our lawn or in the garden. Most of them are cone-shaped, about 80mm deep and equally wide. Sometimes after rain, whole areas are dug up. We don’t mind. We know the culprit – we’ve seen him/her any number of times at night and once even managed to sneak up and get a torchlight photograph. It is a Northern Brown Bandicoot, Isoodon macrourus. This means equaltoothed big-tailed. They don’t have big tails, pretty small in fact, but the name was given from an early naturalist’s drawings which got it wrong. The name bandicoot, or bandikut, derives from an old Indian word for a similar-looking but unrelated Asian “rabbit-rat”. This bandicoot’s diet consists of worms, insects, roots, seeds and berries. Much of our soil is clay and in dry times gets rock hard but the bandicoot has no trouble digging for tucker with his strong, clawed front feet. Distribution of the Northern Brown Bandicoot is up the eastern coastline from about NSW Central Coast up, and along the top of the continent into WA. It’s a wonder we are not overrun by bandicoots. They have the shortest gestation

period of any mammal and females can produce a litter of four young every 10 weeks in suitable conditions. Owls, cats and foxes probably keep them in check. When not mating they are solitary animals, hiding by day in dense vegetation, and under and in hollow logs. When disturbed they make a coughing/sneezing sound. They are also known carriers of paralysis and other ticks. Bandicoots are supposed to be strictly nocturnal, but not all of them take notice of that. Friends living just outside Eumundi have a bandicoot turn up out of the bush every time they light the barbecue, even in broad daylight. Even more amazing is that the bandicoot is joined by a brush turkey and the pair of them scrounge around looking for accidentally-dropped morsels.

n 10 May the wildlife of the Sunshine Coast lost a great champion in Col Brownhill. Col lost the struggle with motor neurone disease which was diagnosed last year. He and his wife Gill started the Eumundi Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre in 1997, a facility that has treated over 20,000 birds, marsupials and reptiles suffering the ravages of cars, disease or predators. Col was born in Linlithgow, Scotland almost 67 years ago and migrated to Australia with his parents as a teenager. He was working as a forklift driver at the Buderim Ginger Factory when he met Gill, a fellow employee. They both knew it was the real thing and married six months later. Their partnership would last 42 years. Together they raised two of their own children and two from Gill’s previous marriage, choosing to live on large and wooded hinterland properties near Eumundi and North Arm, delighting in the

He was steadfast in his support of Gill’s determination to create a rehabilitation centre that would do the best possible job for its patients and give them time to heal. The centre has a higher than average recovery rate due to its philosophy of care. Environment and Outdoors Volunteers needed for forest surveys New community garden for Pomona

A

ustralia’s World Heritage rainforest in North Queensland, known for its high biodiversity values and variety of flora and fauna, is at risk from changes in temperature and rainfall. Earthwatch Australia has developed a new research project, Wildlife of the Cloud Forests, and is calling on volunteers to work with scientists to understand the impacts of climate change on the wildlife inhabiting this internationally significant landmark. Richard Gilmore, Executive Director Earthwatch Australia says, “Volunteers are needed to conduct surveys at different altitudes from sea level to 1400 metres and help spot and sometimes catch birds, reptiles, frogs and mammals. “It’s a rare opportunity to escape to this beautiful, remote area to observe native animals in their natural environment and make a difference.” The research will be carried out across the two most important biodiversity hotspots for the region, the Central Wet Tropics and the Douglas shire. In the Daintree part of the region, the scenery changes from coral

reefs and beaches to lowland lush tropical rainforests, up into mountains covered in cooler upland cloud forests. As the last remaining part of forest that once dominated half of Australia, many animals found here, including cassowaries, a variety of parrots, pythons, possums, tree kangaroos and primitive looking reptiles, cannot be found anywhere in the world. The vital research will help to prioritise ongoing research and management efforts to determine which species, habitats and ecosystems will be most vulnerable, and what can be done to manage this vulnerability and minimise the impacts. The first Wildlife of the Cloud Forests team kicks off on 5 August and runs through until 19 August, with a second team to follow on 28 October 2012. Contact Earthwatch on 03 9682 6828 or www.earthwatch.org.au.

Green Tips from our Facebook fans If you’re buying jewellery for yourself or a gift, why not look around for items reworked from old pieces. It saves on the cost of new gold as well as the waste and chemicals involved in mining new gold. Plus, if you reuse old diamonds, it means you don’t inadvertently support modern day corrupt diamond producing regimes or contribute to environmental damage caused by industrial scale mining. David Frith I turn off all my electrical items that are on standby or charge overnight – not that I have many – but it’s been calculated that the average household has around 20 things on charge or standby (i.e. phones, TV, microwave, audio unit, computers) and it adds up to a lot more electricity than you would think. Wendy Birrell Fran Maguire adds: And if you have solar panels, turning off unused electrical items during daylight hours and using appliances such as washing machines after sunset can help to increase your credits.

n eighteenth century England, it became known that people who caught cowpox didn’t contract the similar but far deadlier smallpox. So in 1796 English doctor Edward Jenner conducted an experiment: he found a milkmaid with cowpox, scraped pus from one of her sores, and then gouged the sample into the arm of his gardener’s son. Lo and behold, the boy came down with cowpox. When he had recovered, Jenner got out his scalpel again and scratched pus collected from smallpox blisters into the boy’s skin. Even after multiple jabs the boy didn’t contract smallpox; as Jenner had hoped, the lad’s body had developed immunity to it having already fought of the cowpox virus. Hence, Jenner dubbed his new lifesaving procedure “vaccination”, as vacca is Latin for “cow”.

This group of women found shopping a pleasure at the markets recently. The group of visitors were at Castaways for a 40th birthday long weekend and chose Eumundi Markets as their day out. Their “organiser”, Brenda (third right) organised a private hiring of Eumundi's community bus to ensure the ladies had a carefree outing after which they could easily carry their shopping home. Private hirings that match the guidelines and other bus commitments are encouraged. Enquiries 0413 199 766.

New car park volunteers New car parking volunteers Joan and Karin say that their car park volunteering work will earn much needed funds for Bellbunya to restore habitat and further develop the riparian zone along Belli Creek. Bellbunya owned by an environmental charity is set up as a small eco-village on 40 acres at Belli Park with organic food gardens, wildlife corridors, a creek and lagoon, a conference hall and restaurant and accommodation for 30 guests.

Volunteers Joan McVilly (left) and Karin Maher on the job for the first time for their environmental charity Bellbunya.

Supporting the body art weekend For the third year, community hearts have banded together with ECCO to staff the car park for the carnivale allowing a donation of $2400 towards the cost of hosting what has now become a not to be missed art and culture event.

“Lovely to have the misty mornings, I love this time of the year. From our back verandah we have this wonderful view, regardless of the time of year, but I especially like it on the misty mornings. I live in Lone Hand Rd.” Janie Ferguson

Not a welcome visitor This car did not display the entry fee nor did its driver follow the car parking attendant's helpful directions – it came at night! Thanks to our local police sergeant for assistance in removing the burnt out stolen car.

e have more options for broadband connections than ever before, which is useful as a few areas in our part of the Sunshine Coast are still out of reach of ADSL. With the proliferation of mobile wireless broadband, most of us are able to get a broadband connection at home or on the move. I’ll summarise some of the Telstra wireless broadband products as many people aren’t sure what they should get. Other providers such as Optus, Vodafone etc. also have wireless broadband products but as Telstra has the best reception coverage I always advise people to go with them, even though it often pains me to do so! Telstra offer a few different options. First you have you standard USB stick, providing broadband to the PC it is plugged in to. You can get the standard 3G or the latest 4G version, and although most of the sunshine

coast isn’t yet covered by 4G it may in the future and the 4G will fall back to 3G if needed. Next you have the Ultimate Wifi product – a small device that lets you connect up to five devices wirelessly to it. It doesn’t need to be plugged into a PC but you will need a wireless adapter for your PC to connect to it (all laptops now have WiFi built in). Finally you have the Elite WiFi product, which gives you what looks like a normal wireless modem, allowing you to connect four devices to it with a cable, and also as many devices wirelessly as you like. This product may be discontinued. Never fear though, if you need this kind of connection at home, you can purchase a 3G/4G router. This allows you to plug in Telstra’s 3G or 4G USB stick and share the connection in your house that way. Talk to me if you need help! If you have a problem or a question phone or drop an email.

ailors Brendan Williams and Connor Williams from Noosa High won the sunshine coast Inter-School Dinghy Regatta on Mothers Day, Sunday 13 May. The Williams brothers beat 60 other young sailors in the Regatta. Noosa Yacht and Rowing Club sailing coordinator Paul Blundell was impressed with the great level of skill, enthusiasm and sportsmanship on show at the event. “None of this would be possible

without the huge support from schools on the Sunshine Coast who help to keep these young sailors on the water,” he said.

Dragons Under 8s News this week “Second Half Fight Back” Lyndal Brown

T

he mighty Eumundi Dragons Under 8s fought back courageously from a 20-nil half time deficit to tie with Saint Andrews Blue, 25 all. In an awesome second half, the Dragons breathed life into the game scoring five unanswered tries. Griffin “Mad Dog” Power, Cal and Carlson hit the rucks with vigour. Sam, Nelson, Steele and Saxon troubled Saint Andrews out wide with some elusive running and great offloading. Thanks to some bone crunching defence from Jedd, Julian and Jack, all of a sudden it began to click for the Dragons. Macca

turned the defensive pressure into points, crossing the white stripe a number of times to give the Dragons the lead. Saint Andrews scored a late try to even the scores on the hooter. With ongoing news, Under 7s and Under 11s also played fantastically, both playing challenging opposition teams. Both teams played brilliantly and rose to the occasion – great teamwork showed once again how our small Eumundi club always comes up smiling. Fantastic weather ensured all players and spectators enjoyed the games for the day – at last, some dry weather!

ained out originally, the Cooroora U6 Panthers played their first “Carnival”, on Saturday May 12 in perfect weather. The team members and dedicated parents from Eumundi, Cooroy, Pomona, Cooran, Federal and Doonan, traveled to The Sunshine Coast Football Carnival at Beerwah. A brisk morning and frosty fields greeted the 32 plus, under 6s teams and 8 fields for this age group alone. Any lighthearted comments about tranquilised Panthers were quickly dismissed as the team displayed their best footwork and team play this season.

A usual match is two, 15 minute halves. The SCF Carnival presented three, 20 minute games. The star player of the day would have to be awarded to Ezekiel Bezel for his excellent ball skills and goal scoring. Aston Finch also stood out for his energetic performance. Team members also included Noah McDonald, Saba Hollick, Dash Cameron, Kobi Witte and Brody Coulson. By the 3rd game, no amount of oranges could prevent the obvious signs of tiredness creeping in and we saw some spectacular pileups and ground hugging from all teams.

Local teams from the Coororah United under 6s played with heart and dedication at this year’s Sunshine Coast Football Carnival at Beerwah. The teams made up of preppies and Year 1s from Eumundi, Cooroy, Cooran, and North Arm played three games each. The ferocious Coororah Panthers won their first game and received much deserved medals.

Locals Home and Abroad Eumundi Green around the world Books and Bintangs in Bali Richard Talady, Noosa Hinterland Realty

H

ere I am at the Bali Cardamon restaurant in Nusa Dua, checking out the “Property of the week in Eumundi Green” and enjoying a cold Bintang and nibbles before dinner. Anita and I did not have to venture far from our hotel as far as good dining went as there was a great choice of restaurants – all within easy walking distance. We had the most relaxing holiday in years at Nusa Dua in Bali. During the two weeks we were there, we both read four books while lounging around the pool, sipping cocktails and Bintangs. The view was very tropical with the pristine blue water of the ocean right at our doorstep and islands and mountain ranges

on the horizon. We had a few shopping trips into Kuta, a day’s visit to Ubud and its famous markets and boutiques high up in the mountains. Somehow we managed to get lost and walked miles through rice paddocks and country lanes, eventually finding our way back to a very welcome coffee shop! A cultural visit to the Pacifica art museum and an enjoyable boat ride to the turtle conservation island rounded the first week off beautifully. Aiming for a bit more adventure, we took off to sample paragliding over the harbour, with the view being fantastic and both of us feeling free like a bird and almost competing with the planes arriving!
