It would appear in 2013 the planets have aligned Sellers who want to sell and buyers who wish to buy seem to be reaching consensus far more regularly than was the case in 2011/12. Over the last 90 days we’ve been selling between 12 – 15 properties a month. They range in price from $150,000 right through to in excess of $3million.

We’ve got the de-amalgamation vote behind us, the Qld State Govt appears to be finding their feet and the rain has caused the country to look spectacular again. Tourists seem to be choosing Noosa in ever increasing numbers and the business activity in the hinterland appears to be vibrant. In my humble opinion we’ve got a lot to be thankful for, I think that people seeking to invest and live the dream in this area agree. That’s demonstrated in a much greater number of buyer enquiries and visitors at our open homes than we enjoyed in previous years.

L

ike the majority of our local population – or so the last census would have me believe – I’m not religious (much to my mother’s horror and the nuns who educated me). I do, however, like to think of myself as spiritual and Easter is a time I like to create some form of ritual or tradition for my family. Craft activities, long lunches, egg hunts, fish and chips and the compulsory gorging of chocolate all make for a great Easter.

There are also many activities on offer over Easter; check out what’s on at the libraries, venues and galleries online. There are lots of fabulous music events happening along Memorial Dr too which should see us all finding our Autumn groove. But I’m also wanting to do a bit of bushwalking, yoga and picnicking – maybe even (dare I say it) surfing.

I’m constantly amazed at the wealth of talent and experience hiding in the hills around Eumundi.

I’d like to encourage more of you to share your stories and passions within the pages of the Green.

And if you have an interesting neighbour or friend, see if they’d let you write about them!

I A large group of foodies recently sat down to the regular degustation dinner at Food@Eumundi. The dishes were reportedly all fantastic but the dessert of chocolate tart with poached pear was amazing.

New arts and craft centre

Long-term locals Kent and Cheryl Hartshorn are opening the Huon Mundi Arts and Craft Centre on their property at 1217 Eumundi-Noosa Rd. The couple have always believed that Eumundi has the potential to be the artistic heart of the Sunshine Coast. They plan to offer a space for local arts and crafts people to share their skills and experiences with other locals.

They have named the centre after local Aboriginal warrior, Huon Mundi. The first workshop to be held at the centre is with acclaimed photographer and teacher Colin Beard on 6 April. kc1127@bigpond.net.au

ne of the current issues with tablets is that they have not yet become a complete replacement for a PC or a laptop. Whilst there are Apps for Android and iPad tablets that can mimic a lot of features of a PC and open and edit Word or Excel documents, if you need to run a Windows program you are out of luck. Also, whilst there are laptop/tablet hybrids they are effectively still laptops and you lose that thin, light panel that is the joy of the tablet form.

Very soon this may no longer be an issue, as Microsoft is releasing the Surface Pro tablet here. The Surface Pro runs a full version of Windows 8, which means you can load and run all your normal Windows software on it, as well as Apps written specifically for the Surface Pro. This differs from the current Surface RT tablet which only runs Apps written specifically for it. With early reviews positive, this bridge between Windows and the tablet could be revolutionary.

t can be daunting to decide to undertake further education and training. There is a myriad of different study options available and wading through the information can seem overwhelming.

However, the benefits of up-skilling are enormous and worth the effort. It can lead to better pay, more responsibility and is attractive to current and future employers. It is also a great way to explore your passions and uncover new talents- the trick is finding a study option that is right for you.

Things to consider when choosing a course:  what qualifications are desirable in the current job market  the course duration and study mode (for example part time, full time, online etc)  any financial support or grants that may available  the entry requirements of the course.

It is also worth evaluating the skills you have as it may allow you to reduce the study time or you may not need to study at all! For example, volunteering with young children may count towards a certificate in childcare or working in an office may count towards a business administration qualification. To find out if you are eligible for Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) it is best to contact a TAFE, university or Registered Training Organisation, to see if a RPL assessment can be arranged.

Of course, formal training and education is not the only way to learn new things and up-skill. Volunteering is a great way to develop your knowledge and it has the benefit of helping you establish new relationships while contributing to a good cause. Establishing a mentoring program with a respected colleague is also a great way of developing your career. It does not have to be a formal process; it could simply be a fortnightly coffee where you can discuss ideas, problems and achievements. It is surprising how many people are happy to mentor others and share their knowledge.

Whether you decide to advance your career through a Diploma or Bachelor level qualification or if you decide to undertake a short course, further education is a great way to boost your career and expand your earning potential. Plus, you never know what you might learn or who you might meet!

Community News Rachael’s spot remembered Last week a memorial plaque was unveiled in honour of former stall holder Rachael Golinski (Macraken) and her three children, who lost their lives in a Boxing Day house fire in 2011. The plaque has been placed in Lonergan’s Lane in the spot Rachael used to have her market stall. A memory was shared and a loss remembered by Eumundi stallies and friends.

he events of Saturday 9th March mark one of the most historic occasions in local government in Queensland, which governments at all levels ignore at their peril. The vote was not only about Noosa, it was about the importance of local communities being able to wrest back their democratic right to manage their own destiny. Communities wish to have a say in how they are governed, on what decisions are made by their representatives and to feel empowered! If you do not listen to what your community is saying then you will not be reelected!

Sense of community was so strong that the grass roots campaign attracted over 300 volunteers from every part of the old Noosa Shire from Boreen Point to Peregian. I am proud to say that among these 300 plus volunteers there was a strong contingent of EDV members – over 30 in all making us a solid 10 per cent of the Free Noosa army!

This mighty effort did not go unnoticed with offers for support and ongoing help in our cause to become part of Noosa Shire from many volunteers. Here is an

example of a typical comment that I have received since the vote, “We need to do whatever we can to help you get your area into the Noosa Shire. If we can help in any small or big way, please call upon us.”

We have already received offers of practical support to help build awareness in our own area about the benefits of being part of Noosa which has just blown me away.

This means that EDV residents are not alone – we have a huge support base to call on to help us in our campaign.

The devil, of course, is in the detail. A lot of hard work needs to be done to be successful, however I feel so encouraged by the level of support and commitment that my optimism has soared – if Noosa can do it then so can we!

Community News Verrierdale asked to say YES or NO! Edwin Boyd, Chairman, VCG

T

he National Broadband Network (NBN) is coming to Verrierdale.

It will be distributed to Sunshine Coast rural areas via towers using a fixed wireless signal. A site has been identified on Verrierdale community land. The Verrierdale Community Group (VCG), who manages the land, has been asked

by NBN to agree to a 40 metre high tower being erected. This caused some concern, so a meeting was held with Sunshine Coast Council (SCC) representatives to gain a more informed idea. The SCC is acting as a go-between for the NBN as it recognises that approval for the tower will be given only if Verrierdale agrees that a tower can be built.

The information session was well attended. Michael Whereat (Broadband and Digital Economy Manager), Katrina Page (Project and Property Officer) and Cr Stephen Robinson represented Council. Reasons for the choice of site, visual, environmental, health and social implications as well as financial compensation were addressed. Technical issues were only briefly touched on. The outcome of the meeting was that those who attended feel a much wider community point of view

needs to be established. As a result a further meeting will be held. The community will be letter-dropped to inform people about this. This will be the only chance the community will have to voice its opinion. It is hoped local people will make every effort to gain information about the fixed wireless distribution system by way of the media and the internet. A secret ballot will take place to gain an understanding of what the community feels about the tower being located on the Verrierdale community land. If a No vote is the majority the other option for NBN access will be by a slower satellite link.

All residents in Verrierdale are urged to attend the meeting at Verrierdale Hall on Monday 8 April at 7pm.

Councillor Rogerson update Original Eumundi Markets I was at the markets recently to chat with locals and stay in touch with what’s happening on the ground in Eumundi.

It was a quiet day due to the wet weather and portrait artist Des Howell created a caricature of me. It’s experiences like having your portrait done that make the Eumundi experience so enjoyable, interesting and unique.

De-amalgamation Council will continue to focus on service delivery to communities across the whole of the Sunshine Coast in light of the results from referendum on de-amalgamation.

It’s good to have some clarity about the future for the Coast and it means that Council can get on with the business of developing a sustainable economy, environment and lifestyle.

Pavilion Markets I’m working towards delivering good outcomes for the Pavilion markets after discussions with stakeholders operating in the area. The main changes ensure that operators working at the front of the site maintain a visible presence and safe working environment.

Water grants Applications for water grants close soon so make sure you find out if your not-for-profit organisation is eligible. Council’s Water and Sewerage Funding Program helps groups with their fixed water and sewerage access charges for the 2012–2013 financial year. In the Spotlight Finding a new melodious passion in Eumundi...

fter 30 years of love, litters and a livelihood spanning hairdressing, fashion design, vocational training, event management and publishing, Anthony and Susa Wynne Hoelscher built their dream house in the sylvan spendour of the Eumundi hinterland three years ago. While they still have some business interests that take them to Brisbane a couple of times a week, they’ve established a fantastic new lust for life, living in such a culturally and environmentally rich place.

Susa, as well as raising a flock of Silkie hens and tending to her

organic garden, was recently appointed to the board of the Original Eumundi Markets with the chance of giving some of her business experience in continuing to uplift this iconic Eumundi drawcard..

Anthony is now back to his passion and roots as a songwriter and muso, gigging around the Sunny Coast with his band HoneyBird – with a style of music described as soulful, blues rock, reflecting influences ranging from Amy Winehouse through to Led Zeppelin.

23 March, the band will perform a special concert to launch their new LP A Golden Thread. It spans 10 tracks and represents a rich musical palette that has a cool vintage rock sound with sparks of Pink Floyd and Crowded House with some Beatlely-Creamish vibes sneaking through. The lyrics, mainly by Anthony and lead vocalist (and the couple’s daughter) Ilsa, reflect the universal themes of love, loss, redemption and joy.

Your Say Favourite bits in Eumundi Green Three cheers for Eumundi Green – it is such a great publication and each issue is thoroughly read and very much enjoyed. Page three sets the tone for the issue, the Editorial and Word on the Street are avidly read – these are favourite bits which tempt the reader further into the issue as well as providing diary notes for forthcoming events. Well done, I know only too well from my working life in the print media world how much blood, sweat and tears go into a publication. I just wanted to say that we readers of EG do so appreciate all your efforts – thank you.

Jill Browne Clean Up Australia Day thanks What a great effort by fifteen fantastic Eumundi folk on a wet and gloomy Sunday morning to volunteer their time to help keep our town clean. Eumundi’s third Clean Up Australia event went ahead despite adverse weather conditions, and a big thank you is due to the dedicated band who braved the bad conditions to collect more than half a skip full of rubbish and recyclables on Sunday 3 March. A special thanks

to junior cleaner-uppers Tahlia and Béla and their dads, who did a really great job. Hope to see you all next year!

Annie Wilson, Eumundi CUA site supervisor People power Great to see democracy at work via the yes or no referendum on 9 March. The people spoke I believe as much as to right an appalling wrong served on residents across Queensland by a previous government as anything else. It was also a clear demonstration that well organised grass roots campaigns will overcome bureaucratic pronouncements about what is good for us.

As we all know there was a tremendous “Yes” vote in Noosa achieved by much hard work from a band of volunteers. Johanne and Ian Wright – who live in Doonan and like me didn’t get a vote – put in a remarkable amount of time and energy in helping the cause they believe in. A big thank you to them and the dozens and dozens of other passionate volunteers.

And now the real work begins about a case for a boundary realignment.

riginal Eumundi Markets’ Easter treasure hunt is open to the first 300 kids who register at the market office on Saturday 30 March from 8am. Kids will be given clues and answers as they wander through the markets.

When they cross the finish line, they’ll receive a chocolate bilby, handmade by Lief Chocolates.

Kids’ craft workshops at Original Eumundi Markets with

local craft queen and artist TT Creator, Rene McGovern, on 3 April, 6 April and 10 April from 8am till 2pm. Workshops are designed for children but big kids (teenagers and adults) are welcome too – if spaces permit.

Markets and Local Crafts Craft for Easter Aleta Bon Eggs dyed with silk fabric

A

s Easter approaches, our family are getting creative again. This year we have dyed eggs with silk fabric, to decorate our home. A method where the fabric pattern imprints onto the egg’s shell. It’s very simple, magical and effective. Here is how we do it.

Tip #1 The lighter the colour of the egg shell – the more contrasted, the end result.

Tip #2 Use recycled silk fabric, from retired clothing, bags, work ties, boxer shorts, saris…  Blow an egg by tapping a small hole in the top and bottom. Blow firmly in long breaths, over a bowl. Then wash out the eggshells.  Cut squares of silk fabric large enough to cover egg.  Cut similar sized squares of plain white cotton fabric.  Wrap each egg fairly tightly (and carefully!) with a piece of silk first.

Brightest side against egg. Then wrap around with a piece of cotton fabric. Secure with twist ties or rubber bands. (The cotton will help prevent leakage of dye from the silk into the water.)  Place wrapped eggs into a large aluminium-free saucepan and cover with hot water. Add several tblsps of white vinegar. (approx. 1 per egg)  Weigh down the eggs with a plate as they float.

Suggestions on how to use for Easter Sunday

 Gently bring to boil, then simmer for 1/2 hr. Remove and leave to cool.

✿ Hang eggs from a fallen branch in a vase on Easter Eve. When your children get up in the morning, they’ll love the newly decorated tree.

 Carefully unwrap each layer. Revealing the decorated eggshell is a magical moment. Allow the water to drain from the eggs.

✿ Create a treasure hunt by hiding the decorated eggs (perhaps add clues or a map for older children).

 Rub a dot of oil or beeswax over the entire surface of the egg, to enhance the colour.

✿ Place in a basket or bowl on the meal table for a festive decoration.

Whatever skills you have would surely be useful – even if you think you don’t have any skills, we welcome your input. Also if anyone could occasionally help backstage with moving scenery and props before and after a show, they’d probably get in the will!

Strange that as soon as a bout of rainy weather comes along, how a handful of people will take any umbrella available. At a recent performance I had to point out to a lady who was leaving, that the umbrella she picked up wasn’t hers. I happened to know who the owner was. She got a bit miffy about it but left minus the brolly. A couple of weeks back at the theatre the same fate befell me. My nice big Mitre 10 brolly “walked”. They may know how to live with themselves but they must make awfully poor companions!

Follett a master of storytelling Ros Mayes

I

am currently reading Ken Follett’s Winter of the World, a sequel to Fall of Giants. Fall of Giants begins in 1911 at the time of King George V’s coronation, and intertwines the lives of 5 families.

The story moves seamlessly back and forth from Wales to Washington, from St Petersberg to Berlin, from London drawing rooms to the battlefields of the Great War. The earl’s sister Maud commits the unforgivable sin of falling in love with Walter von Ulrich, the German spy, which, when added to her suffrage activities, puts a chasm between herself and her aristocratic brother. The Russian brothers plan to emigrate to America but only one makes it there, while the other becomes a working class hero in Russia. Billy Williams begins the novel in a coal mine and finds his strength and courage in the trench warfare of France. His sister Ethel, who is housekeeper to the earl, finds her life taking a different direction when she becomes pregnant to him. In London, she joins forces with Maud in fighting for women’s rights.

At 1000 pages, the book may seem daunting, but the story is gripping from the first page to the last. It is filled with action, intrigue, romance, treachery and courage and takes the reader through the

major world changing events of the 15 years before, during and after WWI. One finishes the first book with a hunger to start the next. Winter of the World is a continuation of the story, with the children of the five families grown and finding their lives interlocking with each other’s as their parents’ did. The rise of the Third Reich, the Spanish Civil War and the tensions leading up to WWII set the scene of the turbulent times through which the story weaves. From the Battle of Britain to the frozen battlefields of Russia, from the escape route over the Pyrenees to the horrors of Pearl Harbour, the children of the original characters work out their place in the world. Follett is a master storyteller who researches fastidiously, thus creating a story which is authentic and believable.

I highly recommend these two books and can’t wait till the third in the series is published.

Last evening a privileged crowd met at Berkelouw’s bookshop for the launch of internationally acclaimed author Kate Forsyth’s latest imaginative book The Wild Girl.

(Italics) Kate spoke of her immediate love of Grimm’s Tales when she received her first copy of the book at seven. The Wild Girl is the story of Dortchen Wild, who lives next door to the Grimm family. Kate informed the audience that her fairy stories are NOT for children!

Eumundi Arts Sacred Journey exhibition for artist and her pupils

Sunshine Coast Council presents local ceramic artist in residence Merrie Tomkins’ exhibition Sacred Journey at the Butter Factory Arts Centre until Saturday 20 April. Merrie is finishing a residency at the Cooroy Butter Factory Arts Centre Pottery Studio. She draws influence from past journeys to explore ancient cultures as well as her life journey of spiritual discovery.

During Merrie’s residency she conducted clay workshops for local children and their works will also be included in the exhibition.

He freelanced extensively for Vogue, Dolly, Cleo, The Sydney Morning Herald, The Bulletin magazines and he was the first photographer to be commissioned for Australian Geographic magazine.

His photographs have been exhibited widely in major cities of Australia and galleries overseas. Colin is currently the principal teacher at the Sunshine Coast School of Photography.

Local artists’ joint exhibition

A

rtists Pam Miller of Eumundi and Cheryl Joy of Doonan have joined forces to create their exhibition entitled Dualis at the Maroochydore Regional Bushland Botanic Garden, 32 Palm Creek Rd, Tanawha. Both women have left teaching careers and moved to the Coast from interstate to pursue their true passion. Cheryl and Pam are both Masters Graduates

in the Visual Arts. Pam studied at the National Art School, under such tutors as Brett Whitely and John Coburn. Cheryl worked under Ron McBurnie, Margaret Wilson, Anneke Silver and Tate Adams.

The women have been working collaboratively for the past three years. The opening is at 3pm on Saturday 6 April and runs until 13 April. raymill@tpg.com.au

Celebrate Food Good and fresh at the markets

A

n escape from the big restaurant environment of Sydney and the search for the right place to set up a food business led Claudia Perey and Jon Dempsey to the Sunshine Coast and the Original Eumundi Markets. An enjoyment of our fresh and healthy lifestyle, access to local produce and a great place to work keeps them here.

Claudia finds the inspiration for her recipes from a variety of sources, taking influences from around the world to create salads, soups and other deli delights to reflect the seasons. She combines flavours including tandoori sweet potato, Asian noodles, roast pumpkin, quinoa and marinated beetroot so customers can enjoy local produce at its best.

Right now she recommends cooking with mushrooms and tomatoes while they are particularly delicious.

Claudia and Jon stay inspired by the locals and visitors from all over the world that they serve at the markets, and while they live down the road in Nambour they feel they are “Eumundi locals� to the extent that they have enrolled their four-year-old at Eumundi School.

Roast mushroom, lentil and feta salad with tomato tapenade (serves 4) Ingredients Salad 200 g dried brown or green lentils, soaked overnight 500 g button mushrooms, halved zest of 2 lemons 1 cup flat leaf parsley, roughly chopped 3 cloves of garlic, crushed 1 tsp fresh thyme leaves 1 tsp smoked paprika 1/4 cup olive oil 1 punnet baby grape tomatoes 1 head broccoli, cut into florets 1 Spanish onion, sliced, pickled in 1/2 cup apple cider vinegar, 2 tblsp raw sugar and salt for at least 2 hours 200 g baby rocket salt and pepper 100 g feta cheese, crumbled Tapenade 150 g semi-dried tomatoes 150 g roast red capsicums 50 g capers 1 clove garlic olive oil

Method To make tapenade, blend all ingredients in a food processor.

Drain lentils and cook in salted water until tender (be careful as it is easy to suddenly go over and cook too far), drain and cool.

Mix garlic, thyme, paprika, olive oil, salt and pepper then toss mushrooms in this mixture, cook in oven at 200C until just tender, remove and cool.

Drain any cooking juices and save. Toss lentils in a drizzle of olive oil, mushroom juices, lemon zest and parsley, season to taste, rest for one hour.

Blanch broccoli florets in boiling salted water for 20 seconds then drain and refresh in iced water.

Remove onions from pickling brine. Mix lentils with rocket, mushrooms, tomatoes, onions and broccoli.

Arrange on platter, drizzle with tapenade and sprinkle with feta.

Marinated beetroot and roast pumpkin salad (serves 4) Ingredients Salad 2 large beetroot 1/4 Jap pumpkin 1 Spanish onion 200g mixed salad leaves 50 -100 g mixed seeds (sesame, pumpkin and sunflower) Marinade 1/2 cup balsamic vinegar 1/2 cup water 1 tblsp honey 1/4 tsp cinnamon drizzle of sesame oil salt and pepper Balsamic dressing 2 tblsp seeded mustard 1 tsp minced garlic 1 tblsp honey 3 tblsp balsamic vinegar 1/2 cup rice bran oil Tahini Dressing 1/2 cup hulled tahini 2 tblsp sesame oil water salt and pepper Method Start one day before required.

Mix marinade ingredients and season to taste.

Cook beetroot in boiling water until tender, drain, cool, peel, cut into wedges and soak in

marinade overnight, then drain once more.

Wash or peel pumpkin, cut into wedges, slice onion thickly, toss both together in sesame oil, season and roast at 200C until tender.

Wash and spin leaves, set aside. Then toast seeds in oven until browned.

To make balsamic dressing, place mustard, garlic and honey in a bowl, whisk in vinegar, gradually drizzle oil in a thin stream while whisking to form an emulsion.

Season to taste and, if necessary, add a little water to correct consistency.

To make Tahini dressing, whisk tahini and about 1/2 cup of water (will thicken at first but then loosen), drizzle in sesame oil gradually while whisking to form an emulsion.

Continue whisking and add a little water to adjust consistency and season with salt and pepper.

Arrange leaves on platter, drizzle with balsamic dressing, top with beetroot, pumpkin and onion, drizzle with tahini dressing and sprinkle with toasted seeds.

Eumundi Heritage Discover Eumundi wants your memories

iscover Eumundi is looking for memories and photographs on many locations in town – and not only history from way back – for a self-guided town tour it is currently developing.

Some of the locations include Eumundi Motors (now Berkelouws) – did you get your car serviced there? Both hotels, Imperial and Joe’s Waterhole – does anyone have a story about the ghost in the Imperial? Sala Thai used to be known as the

corner shop and before that it was the bank of NSW – know anything about the great Eumundi bank robbery that happened there?

The trains stopped coming to Eumundi in the late 1980s and the Eumundi railway station, now used as a cafe on market days, burnt down and was then rebuilt – any memories about that? The CWA hall was where the Eumundi markets started almost 34 years ago – who has some memories and early photographs to share?

A blast from the past It was a walk down memory lane at an oral history recording session at Discover Eumundi for Ray Whiting and Bob Mitchell.

Participants in the current “Heritage Walks goes Online’” project they kindly gave some time to put down memories of an earlier Eumundi when Ray owned Joe’s Waterhole and Bob ran Eumundi Motors now Berkelouws Books.

After recording their reminiscing for over an hour they were later photographed in front of the sites of their old businesses and then both felt the need for a beer – at Joe’s of course.

Bob also brought a couple of photos in from Eumundi’s town centenary in 1991 which were scanned and handed back. If you recognise anyone let us know or have any stories to tell please contact us.

Valmay Templeton Penny Brown

V

almay celebrated her 90th birthday on Saturday 9 March with a large family presence at the Claremont Private Residential Resort for Aged Care in Nambour where she now resides. Morning tea, a few yarns and a family choir continued the tradition of plenty of home cooking, family get-togethers and music.

Val moved to Belli with her family as a young girl. Her father had been a miner at Herberton where she was born, then at Mothar Mountain near Gympie. Val met Allan Templeton as a teenager when Allan carted her parents’ bananas to town for rail transport.

She spent a few years in Brisbane working for a tailor and in a factory making brown paper bags, but returned home to marry Allan.

Over the next 20 years they had six children and work on the farm, raising the youngsters, feeding extra workers who lived in, weddings, dressmaking and even perming local ladies’ hair, filled her busy schedule.

At this time Valmay also became very active in the community, which is how most locals know her. She has many fond memories of the Eumundi Hall Committee, Eumundi Sports Committee, Eumundi Historical Society, founding the Eumundi Markets, Eumundi CWA, helping out with school fundraising, and the list goes on, she has been President

or office bearer in most. Val is still interested in politics but is not as active now.

Valmay remarried after Allan died in 1996 to David Templeton in 1998. They resided at Noosaville and Val cut back on her Eumundi community involvement but became active in local seniors’ calendars at Noosaville. David’s death in 2006 left her alone again and she filled her time visiting family, attending local functions and having family and friends over for dinner.

Valmay is still active in planning outings for fellow residents at The Claremont and always enjoys seeing a familiar face. She welcomes visits from all and regrets not being mobile enough now to go visiting herself. Even in retirement her door is still always open.

P

lease spare a thought for our pet friends in this wet weather.

There are a few health issues we should be watching out for.

Wet weather can be extremely stressful, not just to us but to our pets. Our pets experience stress in much the same way as we do.

Causes of stress in a pet’s life can include extreme situations such as being evacuated due to floods, as well as other situations, change to a pet’s routine such as owners keeping them inside or unfamiliar smells. Pets may also sense when their owners are stressed. We need to be careful about stress in pets as stress can make them more susceptible to things like illness or skin irritations.

When pets cannot go outside to go to the toilet they may develop urinary tract problems. Perhaps the most extreme of these is the “blocked cat”, more commonly a male cat that has formed crystals in his urine through diet, stress and other factors. Being unable to urinate causes great pain and irritation and if left unchecked can be life threatening. If your cat seems to be trying to urinate more than normal, if there is any blood in its urine or it is licking excessively under its tail you should call your vet.

When the weather is wetter than usual humidity causes an increase in flea and tick levels and these can be dangerous to your pets.

Not only are fleas annoying and uncomfortable, they can cause flea allergy dermatitis, a condition where your pet’s immune system overreacts to a flea bite, causing them to scratch excessively. This

scratching in turn leads to further problems such as sores, loss of fur and skin infections. To stay on top of fleas and stop them from attacking your pet you need to use a multi-pronged approach – use preventative flea treatments on your pet to stop them getting fleas in the first place, use flea products to treat any fleas they already have, vacuum your home regularly, and use sprays or bombs to kill any fleas that may already be in your home.

As for ticks, you must be diligent in checking your pets, checking them every day or even twice a day if necessary. This is especially important if you live in a tick prone area. Paralysis ticks are very dangerous and if you notice that your pet is showing symptoms of being bitten by a tick (lethargy, vomiting, weakness in the hindquarters), get your pet to a vet as soon as possible. As well as checking your pets for ticks, use preventative products.

Another risk with the wet weather is an increase in heartworm. The rate of heartworm increases in wet weather as it is transmitted by mosquitoes who rely on water to breed. Heartworm is dangerous to pets as they do not show symptoms until the problem is very advanced and a lot of damage is already done. The best way to attack this problem is to use preventative heartworm medications each and every month or to get an annual injection.

Environment and Outdoors Picnic spots - Lake Weyba

L

ake Weyba, surrounded by Noosa National Park, is just a few kilometres from Eumundi and Noosa but has remained relatively unknown, so is great for a quiet picnic and paddle. It is a naturally preserved stretch of water that feeds into the estuary at Noosa Heads.

The lake is a large, shallow, salt-water tidal lake and a fish breeding ground.

At its widest (about north/ south) Weyba is four kilometres across. It is shallow and the bottom shelves out very gradually from the shore.

The shallow waters and surrounding Noosa National Park provide a peaceful spot for nonmotorised water sports.

You’ll also find people on horseback wading through the shallows, kiteboarders, locals on kayaks and small tinnies dropping crab pots (responsible fishing and crabbing are permitted). Sailing is also popular on Lake Weyba’s long reaches.

If canoeing or kayaking, you can launch nearly anywhere along the creek on the western bank, start from back at the Noosa River, or put in on the western lakeside at Weyba Downs. If you plan to paddle up Eenie Creek, put in at the southern end of Weyba Road on a high tide. The lake is an important marine habitat, and a sanctuary for native wildlife – kangaroos are seen at the water’s edge at sunrise and sunset. The lake is home to an aviary of birds such as pelicans, jabirus, swans and brahminy kites.

ow often in nature do we search for the weather balance that suits all of nature’s wonders?

Two months back, we were praying for rain as food shortages were rife amongst our bird life and then it arrives en masse. With the cascade of insects that follows, this suits the dietary needs of many of our wildlife but other nectar loving birds are bereft as the nectar is washed away. We have had a pair of squirrel gliders this week starving for that very reason.

But rain brings release time and some EG issues ago we talked of a pair of female Phascogales who are now set for release. We have found a pair of males and so they will be released together. Now we are in full swing release mode with several tawny owls, magpies and possums returning to their home.

The seasonal disparity has brought us brought us the arrival of a white faced Heron (photo) and other water birds with intestine infections. This has come about

from the settlement of organic matter in our streams and rivers during the drought only to be kicked up to the surface during the heavy rains which is naturally then drunk by our birds. Of course a part of nature that perhaps only a fresh shallow bowl of fresh water on our properties could aid.

Nature Notes Centipedes and millipedes Kon Hepers

L

ast night in the dark, barefoot as usual, I stepped on something that scuttled away.

The next morning revealed a dead centipede under the door. Unlucky for the critter but lucky for me, firstly because I did not get bitten and secondly as it was a chance to get a photograph. Previous attempts with live ones have always failed because centipedes are astonishingly quick and aggressive.

Centipedes belong to the phylum Arthropoda, the group that also includes insects and spiders. With them and their “cousins” the millipedes it is all about legs or, more literally, feet.

The two taxa constitute a group called Myriapoda, meaning a very large number of feet. The word centipede of course means 100 feet. There are thought to be around 128 Australian species,

some have more legs than others but never a hundred. Centipedes have elongated, flattened bodies composed of segments and each segment has one pair of legs. A curious thing is that they always have an odd number of segments and pairs of legs, say 17 or 23, never an even number.

The legs, or feet, have sharp little claws allowing centipedes to move quickly over rocks, bark and the ground. Two of the pairs of legs are modified; the hindmost pair is long and not used for running but for grasping prey or fighting. The foremost pair, called forcipules, is modified to inject venom into prey via items similar to the fangs of a snake. (The black forcipules can be seen folded down at the very front edge of the head, see image.)

It is not easy to get good information on centipedes, much

of the information available is not detailed and may even be contradictory such as the number of species, maximum size etc. With confirmation from the Queensland Museum, “my” specimen was identified as Scolopendra morsitans, one of the group of socalled Giant Centipedes, capable of inflicting a very nasty bite. It has 21 segments (hence 42 legs) and was measured at 12 centimetres.

This species grows to about 14 or 15cm.

Centipedes are ferocious carnivores, preying on other arthropods and the large ones can take small lizards and frogs.

However some species actually display maternal care, curling themselves around their eggs and hatched young to protect them.

Different species of centipedes can be found all over Australia in moist locations. Some quite large ones inhabit north Queensland rainforests.

The bite from a centipede can be extremely painful but not lethal; no fatalities have been recorded in Australia. Unless anaphylactic

shock occurs, treatment is application of ice and pain relief.

Also in the Myriapoda group are the millipedes. Their name means having 1000 feet which is also an exaggeration. Unlike the centipedes they have hard, rounded bodies, with every two segments fused together and two pairs of legs per segment. The pictured specimen measures five cm, has 21 segments and 84 legs, a long way short of 1000.

Again unlike centipedes, millipedes are vegetarians feeding mainly on leaf-mould and roots of small plants. They have no venom or fangs for biting but as a defensive ploy they roll themselves up into a loop and some species secrete a foul-smelling yellow fluid from glands on the side of their bodies.

Millipedes protect their eggs by depositing them in a nest of hard soil. They are found all over the continent in areas where moist leaf-litter is available. A species which was introduced from Portugal can reach plague proportions in southern states.

he recent abundant rains will have depleted our soils of nutrients, especially the more soluble ones. Plan to replenish the soil before your autumn plantings for healthy, productive growth.

Don’t forget trace elements (AKA micronutrients), whether you add them separately or as part of a complete fertiliser.

While soluble fertilisers are great for seedlings and to provide a quick boost for sick plants, any excess is quickly lost. Nutrients that are contained within organic compounds remain in the soil, and are available for gradual consumption. Blood and bone is rich in nitrogen and phosphorous, and is an excellent fertiliser when combined with rock dust that provides potassium, calcium, iron and other micronutrients.

Give a thought too, to improving water penetration and retention in anticipation of possible drier months ahead. The soil itself can be used as a form of water storage, as long as this is balanced with the need for plantspecific drainage. Now that the ground is wet it is the ideal time to top up mulch to help retain moisture to keep your plants at their best through autumn and winter.

March is also an excellent time for planting a wide range of veggies to make the most of the milder autumn conditions ahead.

Try tomatoes, capsicum, eggplant, lettuce, radish, carrot, beetroot, silverbeet, beans, cucumber, zucchini, onions and garlic in your freshly mulched, nutrient-rich soil – your seedlings will flourish.
