ne of the lovely things about having friends come and stay is you get to see our beautiful village with fresh eyes. Their compliments (or criticisms) make us feel proud and passionately loyal. When you live in such a pretty, friendly, enviable place you tend to take it for granted and forget how lucky you are to call it home. There’s a very strong sense of community in this region which goes a long way toward making our home more like a collection of villages and less like the suburbs.

In this issue we take a closer look at the key community organisations that make Eumundi tick on pages 12 and 13.

We’ve also printed the results of the recent survey Eumundi Green ran in a bid to better understand what you want. If there is something you feel is important for the Green to cover then send an email to editor@eumundigreen. com.au. Unlike other news publications, the Green’s readers actually have a say and are involved in creating the content.

Bad weather kept number’s down at this year’s Song Kran, Thai New Year and water festival at Sala Thai. But those who braved the rain had a lovely evening of great food and colourful tradition.

few weeks ago Microsoft revealed that Office 2013 licenses would be locked to just a single computer, so users whose computers broke down had no option other than to purchase a new license unless their systems were still under warranty.

Following intense criticism Microsoft changed their minds, and rightly so! The licensing conditions now state: “You may transfer the software to another computer that belongs to you, but not more than one time every 90 days (except due to hardware failure, in which case you may transfer sooner). If you transfer the software to another computer, that other computer becomes the licensed computer,” the new licensing terms read.

Of course, Microsoft says that this change is based on customer feedback because they are listening to their customers and are grateful for the feedback behind the change. It is staggering that they could even consider implementing this license change in the first place. How out of touch must they be from their end to think this would have any legs?

Sustainability nominations wanted

N

ominations are open for Sunshine Coast Council’s 2013 Living Smart “Glossies” Awards, held in June. The Glossies recognise sustainability excellence in a range of areas including; building design and construction, eco efficiency in business operations, greening the arts, innovation in services and products, and edible gardening.

Mayor Mark Jamieson said, “I encourage all people who have made smart and effective sustainable choices in their business, home or within their community to enter this year’s Glossies Awards.”

Environment Portfolio Councillor Tony Wellington said there were a few changes to this year’s categories. “New this year is the Creekside Greening Award… with a $2000 cash prize up for grabs.”

This is open to not-for-profit community groups that have contributed to the health of local waterways. You can self-nominate in the categories of Excellence in Sustainable Design, Affordable Living, Living Smart Solutions, Sustainable Business, Greening the Arts, Creekside Greening and Edible Landscape. Customer service = business growth

T

he growth of my business since its opening six months ago comes down to one thing – customer service. This is the most important part of my business. After 12 months of research before starting Eumundi Pet Grooming I discovered that was what was lacking in the pet grooming industry – and in a lot of small businesses here on the Sunshine Coast – was good customer service practices.

I cannot express strongly enough the importance of making sure that a customer feels like they are the most important person you have spoken to all day.

In my salon I like to sit and liaise with a client, get to know their pet and really listen to the client’s needs. I make sure that every customer in my salon has my undivided attention. At the conclusion of a sale I always genuinely thank them for their business.

I had a lovely couple bring their dog in for grooming the other day and when I thanked them for their business the gentleman looked at me and said that it was the first time he had ever been thanked for using a business. I believe that we need to really show how appreciative we are to have customers come in and support our businesses. Let’s face it they won’t get that on an internet shopping site.

I have expanded my business in six months and I continue to move forward with this one simple business practice. People talk, so happy customer word of mouth is a winner.

Community News Rotary information night

T

he Rotary Club of Cooroy is holding an information night on 6 May at the Cooroy Bowls Club, Opal St, Cooroy at 5.45pm.

Speaker Bob Abbott will explain “What Rotary is all about” and invite ladies and gentlemen to become members of Rotary, who this year

W

e have been kept busy recently with a number of arrests being made in the last few weeks.

A 31-year-old female from Tewantin was arrested for stealing plants off a display truck in Doonan. A vigilant passing motorist provided relevant and timely information and a number of the stolen plants were recovered.

A local 31-year-old female was arrested for a series of petrol drive-off offences committed at Coolum Beach and Coochin Creek. She was further charged with multiple traffic offences related to permitting use of an unregistered and uninsured motor vehicle and using false plates during these offences. She also had an outstanding arrest warrant with 20 charges including multiple theft, fraud and bringing stolen goods into Qld. Moving on, we are receiving disturbing reports of increasing drug activity in town. I can assure

you that this information will be acted on swiftly. I will not tolerate any level of drug activity and the associated criminal behaviour that it attracts in our community.

Finally, we are noticing an increasing disregard for the parking rules outside the school in Caplick Way. Blair and I are pretty flexible with parent parking behaviour, however, be warned that action will be taken when blatant disregard is shown. A recent example saw an unattended vehicle parked on the yellow kerb line directly beside a “No Standing Anytime” sign, the windows down, key in the ignition and the engine running. This is inviting an opportunistic thief and is foolish behaviour. That’s the wrap for this issue – stay safe on the roads and stick to the posted speed limits please.

Community News Councillor Rogerson update

I

t is a good idea to check Council’s website regularly to find out what is happening at Council on matters that might be of interest to you. For instance, at Council’s next Ordinary Meeting we will be considering changes to some local laws related to pathway management and the keeping of animals. We expect to be seeking community feedback in May and more information will be available on Council’s website then.

There are plenty of people in Eumundi and surrounding areas who are involved in sustainable practices at home, in business and within the community. Council’s Glossies Awards recognise local sustainability champions and now is the time to nominate for the awards. Council’s website has all the details about the categories of Excellence in Sustainable Design, Affordable Living, Living Smart Solutions, Sustainable Business, Greening the Arts, Creek side Greening and Edible Landscape.

An excellent youth art exhibition is happening at Sunshine Coast libraries at the moment. You can check out the work of our region’s talented young artists at

Nambour and Cooroy libraries and you might even catch some of the young artists selling their artwork at the Eumundi market.

I will be at the Eumundi market on Wednesday 17 April from 10am to meet with locals about what is happening at Council. I am always happy to catch up about things that matter locally and it would be great to see you there.

Community News Verrierdale community meeting

News in brief

N

early 100 members of the Verrierdale community came out on a wet Monday evening to express their views about the possible establishment of a fixed wireless NBN tower on community land in Verrierdale.

After a vote total of 70 YES to 27 NO, the management committee passed the following motion. “The Verrierdale Community Group, based on a clear majority of community members, advises that it consents to the Sunshine Coast Regional Council (SCRC) to use a small portion of the community

land to establish a fixed wireless network tower. It is understood the SCRC will also require our agreement to negotiate and enter into a lease with NBN Co. This is after all planning processes required to establish a tower in Verrierdale have been met.”

The committee wishes to thank everyone for their thoughts and contributions in helping make this decision. It must be remembered this is a first step only. The NBN Co. still have to meet all planning guidelines as set down by Council before a result is achieved.

he Cooroy-Eumundi garden club celebrated their 25th birthday party with a trip on the Noosa Ferry on Monday 8 April, followed with a luncheon at the Riverdeck at Tewantin wharf.

The Garden Club was formed

by Loreley Tulk (pictured left) of Eumundi. The inaugural meeting was held at the CWA Hall in Cooroy

with 27 people in attendance.

Meetings are on the 2nd Monday of each month (except January) and are held at different members’ gardens or in the Rotunda, Noosa Botanical Gardens, Cooroy.

Members maintain a small garden within the Botanical Gardens. Guest speakers give talks on a range of gardening

subjects. Bus trips to various garden venues are arranged once or twice a year.

New members are always welcome to join this very friendly club which now has around 30 members.

Members of the Coolum Caravan Club volunteer as car park attendants once a month to raise funds for their chosen charity Royal Flying Doctor Service. Since incorporation 10 years ago they have donated between $100 and $225 each year along with all the other Clubs who are members of the Combined Caravan Clubs Queensland.

ANZAC Day Lest We Forget, 1935 At age six, and 20 years after the event Mother told me about Gallipoli.

Those men or what was left of them now in their late thirties and middle age and those not physically maimed who walked our streets, and worked in our stores.

And those who seemed well but carried persistent gas coughs; and some buffeted by intemperate behaviour who wrestled with the rattle of bones passed off lightly as shell shock as though that was it and nothing could be done.

Mother never missed the 4.00am Last Post.

She told me, an attentive child, how our tall young men on that pale morning jammed into the wrong place endured a holocaust worse than hell.

Sound floated easily from the cenotaph to our house on the edge of town and at dawn Mother whispered: “Listen, John, hear the last post, the wail of the bugle? That is their hearts, and their souls crying.”

Community Kids Moving house or moving home?

I

n the hustle and bustle of finding a new home for our families to move into we sometimes overlook the chances of adventure and excitement for our children. Rather than being a stressful time, moving house can be a lot more fun if the kids are involved. In my recent move to a new property I involved the kids in the selection of our new rental property. I asked the kids what sort of things were important to have in a home and created a checklist. We cut the checklists out and stapled several to a small clipboard made out of cardboard, and attached a pencil to it with elastic bands. As we visited each rental inspection, the kids asked the real estate agent questions about the house and filled in their

checklists. The look on the faces of the real estate agents as they were being quizzed by the kids was great to see, and the kids actively looked around the house like a mini treasure hunt to see who could complete the checklist first. As the kids live with me every second week, these checklists kept them involved in the selection of the rental property, with them making sure I got the house which we all agreed was the highest scoring! A simple idea, but the best way to keep children engaged, interested and enthusiastic during the selection of a new home! The kids had an attachment to the home even before we started living there. Next time you move, make it an adventure!

o you have a child under five? Come along to Eumundi Playgroup! It is held in the green shed near the Eumundi Aquatic Centre every Monday from 9.3011.30am (excluding school holidays). The cost is $2 per family per week. If you decide you’d like to attend our playgroup regularly, you will need to become a member of Playgroup Queensland which is about $40 for 12 months.

You need to pay this membership online and then you are able to attend any playgroup in your area.

As our usual playgroup location is mainly outdoors, we don’t hold playgroup there in wet weather.

However, we have arranged another venue on Sunrise Road, Doonan. Playgroup is a great way to meet new people and has many activities for the children to enjoy.

o the uninitiated Eumundi appears to have more than its share of organisations for a town of its size. Why do we need so many groups? What do they all do?

Is it a board or a community association? Does it deal with heritage or history?

Markets abound, but which market and where? To add to the confusion, the names of these groups also sound alike. As this diagram shows, up until 2008 there were three groups, now there are six. Who runs these organisations and how can they be contacted? How can community members get involved? Ask someone who has lived here for a while and they will have questions too.

Markets and Local Crafts A passion for body painting Nina Neher

I

used to draw lots of horses and naked ladies in my school books growing up but I had never painted on a human body until the 2010 Australian Body Art Carnivale. After reading the advert in the Noosa News, my sister Rene Mcgovern (ttcreator) talked me into entering the brush and sponge event that year after I had recently moved to the Sunshine Coast with my two little boys.

She said it would be a great way to break out of the depression that I had been experiencing.

So together we dragged along a couple of guys we talked into modelling for us and entered.

Rene won 3rd place that year and I won an encouragement award from a sponsor Snazaroo.

In the illusion magazine that Rene won, there were many articles on body paint artists from all around the world who were professional and passionate about this art form. I fell in love with one of these artists from America and he fell in love with me also. It is great having a husband whom I have been a huge fan of for some time now. Together we formed our business Nina and Brady to share

with the world what we love to do most. For me, that is paint one of a kind pieces of artwork on people and see how happy it makes them and others to witness it.

If it wasn’t for the Australian Body Art Carnivale I would never have discovered body art. I would never have found this world of artists who share the same passion that I feel... I would never have found Brady for that matter and vice versa.

This event is very dear to my heart. Nina and Brady have developed workshops called “have a go” for absolute beginners (people who may have never even painted anything before); we have made them fun and affordable so that ANYONE can try this art form using nothing but the best products. My hope is that I may have a chance to meet with men and women who may be in the situation I was in only a few years ago or people and fellow artists who may be looking for fresh creative inspiration.

I urge everyone to jump into this event, support the artists however you can ... join in the competitions.

It is not often you find an event

he Australian Body Art Carnivale – held 11 and 12 May 2013 – is looking for volunteers to help with this colourful, fun-filled event.

Organising committee chairperson Kerrie Bryant-Adams says most of the volunteer work is for either set-up on Friday 10 May or over the weekend of 11 and 12 May, when the event takes place. “Volunteers assist with tasks such as the setup; car parking shifts; registration desk meet and greet; selling raffle tickets; catering and distributing food to the artists throughout the competitions; supporting the competition co-ordinators; and overseeing children’s activities and pavement art,” she says.

“We’ll also be collecting survey information from artists and visitors to the event, so need some iPad owning volunteers who can give us a couple of hours of their time over the weekend,” she explains.

Books Is Your Child’s Brain Starving? Kait Manchip Dysfunctional Canada Duncan Sayers

F

or me personally, the book Is Your Child’s Brain Starving?

by Dr Michael R Lyon and Dr G Christine Laurell, was life changing.

I have had memory and concentration issues for many years and the information in this book enlightened me so that I could cure myself. It explains in clear language how what happens in your stomach can have a big effect on your brain function.

There are examples of people who were treated and how their changed their lives dramatically. It tells why some kids are much more affected than others by artificial colours and certain foods. Dr Lyon worked with many ADD, ADHD and Autistic kids, did his own research and discovered links. Most of the children had undiagnosed digestive system conditions.

When he treated with diet change and vitamin supplements they made improvements in behaviour.

Dr Lyon also explains how bad oils (take away fried food) may cross the blood brain barrier as they mimic brain matter – which makes you think twice about a hot chip!

Basically, he says, brains need

zinc, magnesium and Omega 3 and 6 to work, and the average Western (or Aussie) diet is probably not adequate for optimum brain function. I found this book in our local library. I highly recommend it to parents, teachers, tuckshop helpers and anyone working with kids, especially if they are dealing with behavioural issues, or struggles with schooling. It is also useful for many adults.

Writer’s comp proves popular

he Sunshine Coast Literary Association continues to receive a stream of entries from writers across regional South East Queensland for this year’s Writers’ Competition. There are four entry categories including junior short story, young adult short story, open short story and open poem.

There are four categories in this year’s competition including:  Category 1: Open Short Story, to a maximum of 2500 words  Category 2: Open Poem, to a maximum of 40 lines  Category 3: Young Adult (High School, Years 8-12) Short Story, to a maximum of 1500 words  Category 4: Junior (Primary, Years 5-7) Short Story, to a maximum of 1000 words

R

ichard Ford’s novel Canada is centred on a bank robbery.

Yet the actual deed passes in the narrative almost as an afterthought. The novel focuses instead on the observations of 15-year-old Dell Parsons as he is swept up in the events bracketing his parents’ crime.

In Canada we are not treated to a page-turning heist novel.

Instead we are presented with a reflective examination of a family’s seemingly inevitable – or perhaps accidental – descent into dysfunction. Written with 50 years of hindsight, Dell describes a time in ‘60s America where his father Bev stumbles through life in search of something significant to mark his time, poorly matched to Dell’s frustrated and yet reluctantly accommodating mother. As various schemes unravel the optimist in Bev sees that the best solution to funding his problems is to rob a bank.

Bev’s naivety is their undoing and after the inevitable arrest of his parents, Dell’s twin sister Berner takes matters into her own hands and runs away. Meanwhile Dell is gathered up by a family acquaintance and is driven over the border into Canada to escape the care of the State. There he is left largely to fend for himself, in the loose supervision of strangers with dubious histories of their own.

Ford’s prose in Canada is superb – one can open to any page of the novel and appreciate his craft. However the pace and repetition of Dell’s recollections is frustrating, a circular crossexamination of his memories that is insightful and yet at

times arduous in aggregate. This criticism is difficult in that the novel reads somewhat true to character. We all have a collection of memories that could benefit from good editing however Dell’s recollections expand to lack authenticity in the level of detail remembered over a 50 year interval. Is this the voice of a 15-year-old or of a 65-year-old remembering?

Above caveats aside Canada is worth the effort. Ford happens to choose the least interesting character in the family as his protagonist; a passive individual, who is carried by events rather than influencing them.

Perhaps a more conventional characterisation would have been to concentrate on the adventures of Dell’s runaway sister, or his thwarted fish-out-of-water mother.

Courageously, Ford has taken the less obvious, more difficult route as a writer. You will only know if he has succeeded if he somehow keeps your attention until the last page. Count this review as one success.

Mosaic Mystery...

Recently we interviewed Paul Berkelouw about his family buying what was once the Eumundi Motors building to create Berkelouw Bookbarn Eumundi.

He discussed why they chose Eumundi and the challenges they had restoring and insulating what was basically a tin shed.

When we went to take photos of him and manager Amanda at the front of the building he proudly showed us the mosaic at the entrance to the book shop.

Apparently it was found in an area at the back of what would have been the lube bay where the cafe is now and was cut out of the concrete and moved to its new location.

Does anyone know anything about it, who made it and when? We would love to know and so would Paul.

Celebrate Food Eumundi Feijoas

D

id you know that feijoas are absolutely packed with Vitamin C? This delicious little fruit, a South American native, is in season from February until May, just in time to boost your immune system for winter.

Sally Hookey and Peter Heineger from Eumundi’s own Certified Organic feijoa farm are our local experts, with over 1000 trees and five varieties at their property in Belli Creek.

Sally grew up with feijoas and was missing the fruit a lot so when they started the orchard in 2008 the choice was natural. Now they are the only organic grower of the fruit in Australia.

They love living in Eumundi, they say it is a good place to grow things and believe the hinterland could be more of a food bowl. “After all, we have water and markets, and all within reach,” Sally says.

The feijoa is a member of the Myrtle family, which includes other fragrant plants such as eucalyptus, allspice, guavas and cloves. Its distinctive complex flavour has been likened to a mix of strawberries, pineapple and guava.

As well as the fresh fruit Sally and Peter have developed products made with their crop: jam, chutney, chocolates and even gelato. Too busy with the farm, they collaborate with talented local chefs to make them. Peter Wolfe of Cedar Creek Farm is one of them and has contributed new products that no one else in the world is making.

Feijoas are traditionally eaten raw as a fruit in South America but are also used a lot in savoury cooking. They can be used to replace apples in savoury recipes and are very rich in pectin and vitamin C. Peter Wolfe has developed his recipes to be very close to the traditional ones.

Hinterland smoothies Sally says blend together: 4 feijoas 1 banana 1 tblsp honey Milk and yoghurt to make up to preferred consistency, and drink for an energy-fuelled start to the day that’s full of goodness.

For a tropical twist: substitute the banana and milk with 1/4 fresh pineapple and ½ cup of light coconut milk.

Top up on superfoods: substitute one small punnet of blueberries for the banana, and add a teaspoon of acai berry powder into the mix.

Coconut feijoa cake Ingredients 1½ cups caster sugar 4 eggs, separated 2 cups desiccated coconut 2 cups self-raising flour 1 tsp baking powder 1 cup milk 1 cup peeled and chopped feijoas Method Beat the butter and sugar together until light in colour and creamy in texture.

Beat in the egg yolks.

Fold in the coconut and sifted dry ingredients with the milk and fruit.

Beat the egg whites until stiff

and fold into the cake mixture.

Turn into a well-greased and lined 23 or 25cm cake tin.

Bake at 180C for 1 hour or until a cake skewer inserted in the centre comes out clean.

Cool for 10 minutes before turning out.

Dust with icing sugar before serving or cover with a lemon icing prepared from icing sugar, grated lemon rind and lemon juice.

or a number of years Discover Eumundi has produced a self-guided Eumundi town walk leaflet for those wanting to stroll around our heritage town and find out more about its history and, in particular, the stories behind today’s buildings and business houses. This has been very popular with visitors and locals alike, with volunteers often taking groups of school children, seniors and other interested people for a guided tour using this leaflet.

Thanks to a Regional Arts Development Fund grant this concept can be developed further.

Now in keeping with the move to all things internet, many of the Eumundi town locations on this guide will soon be accessible online. Each location is being researched at Discover Eumundi to find photos and information on the history of each site. People are being sought to record their memories, which will be used to create digital stories with sound and images that will be able to be viewed and listened to through smart phones and tablets such as iPads.

walk leaflet will be redesigned with symbols called QR codes added, which are a bit like a barcode at a supermarket. People with smart phones and tablets such as an iPad will be able to download software that will scan the code and a story will come up on their screen, so they can look, listen and learn about Eumundi. Each building and location on the trail will also have these codes so people walking in the street can access this technology and the Eumundi stories.

The Heritage Walk stories will be designed to engage Eumundi visitors and will include some of the more interesting aspects of Eumundi’s past.

Discover Eumundi sees this project as a fabulous way of getting its wonderful collection of images and stories on Eumundi out to the wider community but still needs the help of the community to make it work. We have started recording some of the memories people have on locations in Eumundi at an earlier time and some great memories are coming out. We are still looking for more memories and photos on a number of locations in

s part of our goal to live more sustainably we have been growing our own healing remedies. There are many easy-to-grow, easy-to-use herbs that you can harvest and prepare to treat minor illnesses. Some of them are used in teas, others in poultices.

Here is a short list of a few great herbs you can start with: ✿ Parsley: Contains many vitamins and minerals and is useful as a healing herb in issues with urinary and kidney problems, as well as with water retention. ✿ Peppermint: Used for stimulating the appetite, as well as helping with indigestion, upset stomach, vomiting, flatulence and nausea. ✿ Rosemary: Stimulates the circulatory system, helps calm digestion, and has overall antidepressant qualities. ✿ Comfrey: Very useful on wounds, sprains, bruises, burns and even broken bones. It also makes great mulch. ✿ Lemon balm: As a tea, this herb helps calm the nervous system and stimulates the heart. It is very relaxing and can dispel headaches. ✿ Chickweed: The entire above ground part of the plant is great in salads. It is also good as a poultice for burns and nappy rash. ✿ Dandelion: All parts of the plant can be eaten, though the young leaves and flowers are the tastiest parts. This herb is rich in potassium, and is also a great cleanser for kidneys and the liver. ✿ Lavender: Useful for stress-based headaches, as a gentle nervous system tonic, and works well as an antidepressant. ✿ Chamomile: Chamomile tea and infusion are calming, as well as mild digestive aids. A warm bag of chamomile leaves can be placed on a wound or on the eyes to help with inflammations and infections.

My children love to make special teas using herbs and our guests are often treated to quite a unique brew! With little ones I find labelling herbs largely pointless as they always use the tags for their own “projects”.

Instead I like to tape a leaf into a book with a note about what the herb is and how to use it.

So for added protection during the cold and flu season, why not start making your own immunity building herbal teas. Oh, and do not forget to add extra garlic to your meals too!

Nature Notes Microbats Kon Hepers

W

e always know when there are flying foxes on our property by their squealing and squabbling, well into the night. They are attracted to the flowering bloodwoods but also raid our pawpaw trees and bananas. We don’t mind, we know how important they are to the pollination of many of our native species and preservation of our environment. Usually it is the Black Flying-fox or occasionally the Grey-headed species and they seem to arrive in small bands of a dozen or so. This is good, if they were to set up a camp of tens or even hundreds of thousands on our property we probably would mind. (The name “Fruit Bat” is generally but incorrectly applied to all flying foxes.)

Of course we know that when we walk outside at night we are surrounded by any number of small insectivorous bats, known as Microbats, fluttering and zigzagging around on the hunt for mosquitoes, moths and other insects. Occasionally we catch a glimpse as they flit through the torch beam or get silhouetted

against a window, but we never get a close look. There is a range of sizes but they are all small and ugly. Collectively they are called Vesper bats, from the Latin word for evening.

Recently Verrierdale resident Fay Wiggins called to say there was a bat caught in her downpipe.

This was a chance for a closeup. We “rescued” the bat and it obliged us by allowing a few photographs before flying away.

Identification from illustrations in text books and Google sites was impossible as so many of them look alike. Experts at the Queensland Museum narrowed it down to the species Scotorepens greyii, the Little Broad-nosed Bat, with the reservation that it could also be a very closely related and slightly larger species. Apparently even with one species in each hand they are still most difficult to tell apart.

There are 58 species of Microbats in Australia, ranging in weight from two grams to 170 grams. They fly and hunt at night by echolocation, emitting 10 ultrasonic pulses per second,

going up to 100 per second when homing in on prey. They can eat as many as 500 flying insects in an hour, or up to half their body weight in a night’s hunt.

Their value in helping to reduce insect pests is self-evident. In some countries towers housing thousands of bats are located near crop fields as bats are more effective and environmentally acceptable than insecticide spray in controlling pests.

The Little Broad-nosed Bats weigh around 10 grams. They live in small colonies of up to 20 bats, using tree hollows, curled up

banana leaves, palm fronds and crevices under eaves, changing sites frequently.

They have one “pup” in November which can fly at about five weeks old, in time to stock up body fat while insects are plentiful before going into torpor (mini hibernation) over winter.

Important: Flying foxes are known to carry the potentially deadly Australian Bat Lyssavirus (ABLV).

The virus has also been found in at least one species of Microbat.

Contact with all bats should be avoided.

s we all know with Gill “never give up hope” could well be her middle name. This week we once again see that distinct ethos of Gill’s in pulling two reptiles from the jaws of death and on the road to recovery. In both cases, they were hit by cars and left, although our first patient – the bearded dragon – was placed off the road by a motorist who then called the centre, informing Gill where it was.

Gill shot off in the car and found the dragon with a broken back leg.

Following an operation at the vet (its leg was pinned), it is now on the mend and being nursed back to health at the centre.

Bearded dragons are named for the distinctive flap of skin, which lies below their jaw. When threatened, these lizards assume a defensive posture, opening their mouths and pushing their throat skin forward to make this “beard”. This combined with the strong spikes which line the lizard’s throat and side of its body,

serve as a deterrent to would-be predators. Its bright yellow mouth adds to its distinctive looks.

Another recent victim to the car was a Lace monitor lizard.

Found half blind and in a bad way on the side of the road, Gill has weaved her magic and the lizard now appears to be mending fast – although its eye remains

damaged and closed and may never re-open.

Recycling for no waste contamination

N

ow the weather is a bit cooler it is a pleasure to spend time in the garden and the rain has made sure that there is still plenty of growth (especially the lawn and the weeds). But the good growing conditions have also provided ideal conditions for swarms of mosquitoes. Forays into the garden can result in a frenzy of slapping, or lavish applications of repellent to keep the little blighters at bay.

It is important to do the usual things to reduce mosquito numbers, like emptying containers where water can lie to reduce hatching of mosquito larvae. However many gardens have places where mosquitoes can proliferate, such as water features and the waterholding throats of bromeliads and these breeding areas are harder to

control. Encouraging frogs, lizards, and insects to your garden will help to naturally reduce mosquito numbers.

Pest management systems are commercially available and claim to break the breeding cycle of mosquitos. But before you go to that expense, a home-made trap could do the trick. According to the internet, this trap was first devised by a class of Taiwanese students for a class project. It requires items that are usually available at home and is quick and simple to make. The mixture in the trap emits carbon dioxide that lures unsuspecting mosquitoes. Just place it in a corner of your garden and let it do its magic. The bait will need to be renewed every couple of weeks.

You need: a used two litre plastic drink bottle, scissors, sticky tape, 1 cup white sugar, 1 cup boiling water, 2 cups cold water, 1 teaspoon yeast, black wrapping or paint.

Instructions: Pour boiling water over sugar and stir to dissolve, add the cold water, leave to cool (it needs to be less than 40 degrees Celsius). Cut the top section off the bottle. Add the cooled sugar syrup to the bottle and insert the inverted top into it, making sure the syrup level is below the mouth of the bottle. Tape the two parts together. Add the yeast and cover with dark wrapping (or use black paint).

It only takes one piece of a ceramic pot the size of your thumb nail to cause one tonne of recycled glass from the resource recovery centre to be rejected. Contaminating your recycling bin or green waste bin with the wrong items, such as plastic bags or ceramic, can affect community recycling efforts.
