The top of Memorial Dr is vibrant once again thanks to the beautiful panels recently installed around the abandoned buildings. Eumundi State School parents Dave Hackett and Marlee Abraham (above) worked with children and teachers to create a painting from each class as part of the school’s Arts in Action festival. ECCO sponsored the endeavour as part of its streetscaping project. Turn to page 11 for more information and page 14 for more Arts in Action photos. Photograph thanks to Fran Maguire.

Beautiful decorated stoneware Jan Ferguson has been creating functional stoneware pottery and selling it at the Wednesday Eumundi Markets almost from the beginning. Jan says she loves how her creativity with pottery is refreshed by the experience of selling her items each week at the markets. “Having the connection with my customers in the markets makes all the difference”. Drop in to Jan’s stall – you might even see the striking young girl outlines in black on white bowls and plates designed by Jan’s granddaughter.

EDCA’S Annual General Meeting Members and visitors are welcome to attend our AGM to be held at Joe’s Waterhole on Monday 9 September at 7pm.

Editor's Word on the street is... Desk Well, Eumundi has jumped into spring and September is shaping up to be a real humdinger. Feel like a dance? Country or full moon? Want an outdoor cinema? Grab the picnic blanket. Need to get healthy? There’s a whole day devoted to it! Like live music? Pub, café, brewery, amphitheatre – take your pick. Like a walk? Get your hat! Want to get involved? Head along to one of the AGM’s this month. Looking at the community diary (right) we’ll be hard pressed finding a reason to leave the area. On top of that, Memorial Dr has begun its facelift – it’s lovely to drive past and see kids proudly showing off their bit of the mural. But with spring in the hinterland also comes a certain level of responsibility. Our native neighbours are very active at the moment so we need to drive a little slower, leave nests untouched or patches of lawn unmown, or just keep our distance from nesting animals. It can sometimes be a challenge – as I write this column a broody maggie is attacking her reflection in my office window – but a big part of why we all live here is the fauna after all! Business News ECC meeting

New addition to funky Eumundi shopping strip

At this month’s Chamber breakfast there were quite a few new members. They were given the chance to say a few words about their business – as were prospective members and new businesses. The meeting was held at Alfresco Café on Eumundi-Noosa Rd. Owner Kaz O’Neill (pictured left) introduced her business and why she chose to move the café from Doonan to Eumundi.

New boutique shop Eumundi Style is a great addition to the feel of the village. Offering a selection of clothing and homewares, owners Jen Highden-Smith and Kate Gyngell will be open seven days a week. The removal of the shop’s rollerdoor and replacement with a window makes a great difference to the space.

Business Mentoring Forum Business Mentoring Noosa (BMN) will conduct a forum on Marketing on Tuesday 24 September, 5.30- 7.30pm at Australis Noosa. Based on the Business Mentoring New Zealand model, the not-for-profit program was launched in November 2011 as a membership service of the Noosa Chamber of Commerce and Industry (NCCI). Over 100 local businesses have now participated in the program. The Forum series covers five potential improvement areas for local businesses; Business Planning, Finance, IT, Marketing and Sales. A Forum will be offered on each of these topics. $20 for Chamber members (any Sunshine Coast Chamber), $25 for non-members. www.bmn.org.au or www.facebook.com/BusinessMentoringNoosa

Computer Notes Anthony Wynne-Hoelscher (left) and new arrival Leonie Phillips were this month’s guest speakers. Anthony spoke about potential opportunities for local businesses in relation to the Eumundi Live concerts.

Eumundi and District Historical Association Inc Annual General Meeting The Eumundi and District Historical Association Inc. will hold its Annual General Meeting on Wednesday 25th September 2013 at 6.00pm at the School of Arts, Memorial Drive, Eumundi. Most email spam is commercial advertising, often for dubious products or get-rich-quick schemes. It clogs up your inbox, uses up your monthly download allowance and can also hide viruses that infect your computer. Being careful who you give your email address to in the first place is a good way to help reduce the spam you receive. Installing and activating up-to-date security software including spam filters will help reduce what actually gets through to you. Knowing how to recognise and deal with the spam that does get through will help ensure you don't get conned or make the problem worse. Another excellent way you can reduce spam is by using Google’s Gmail system. Even if you don’t currently have a Gmail address, you can set your email host to forward mail to a Gmail account you create, then download your email from Gmail into your normal email program. Gmail's spam filters are superb, catching 95 per cent of spam and hardly any of your real mail is ever flagged as spam accidently. Using this method in conjunction with a decent security program with spam filtering on your PC will catch just about all spam you are sent.

Community News News in Brief Eumundi conservation park community walk. This Sunday 8 September the community is invited to celebrate and walk the new 3.8 km Geebung Circuit. The walk will commence from the Verrierdale Forest Road entrance (off Seib Road) at 2pm. There is one steep section but it is more than doablefor all walkers. Please wear walking shoes, hats, long sleeves and sunscreen. Some parking is available at the entrance to the park or you can catch the community bus from outside the Imperial Hotel at 1.30pm. If you are feeling energetic why not get the family to walk or ride to the event!

For a map www.nprsr.qld.gov.au/ parks/eumundi-conservation-park The EDV annual general meeting is being held at the School of Arts on Thursday 5 September at 10.30am. The guest speaker is Peter Franks, the Transition Manager for the separation of the Noosa Council from the Sunshine Coast Council. The EDV president will be talking about the future strategy for a boundary change once the Noosa Council is established and has extended an open invitation to all Eumundi Green readers to go along, have a cuppa and hear the latest news. Everyone welcome.

Verrierdale land purchased by Council Two hundred and fifty-two hectares of land adjoining an existing nature reserve at Verrierdale has been purchased by Council for conservation. Mayor Mark Jamieson said Council paid $2 million from the Environment Levy to buy the parcel of land located at 219 Doonan Bridge Rd, Verrierdale. “This purchase is on top of the 600 hectares of land purchased by Council for conservation across the Coast and shows how valuable the Environment Levy is to this region,” Mayor Jamieson said. The land connects the 47 hectare Doonan Wetland Nature Refuge and 83 hectare Doonan Creek Bushland Conservation Reserve to the Noosa National Park making the combined Reserve 382.7 hectares. The mayor explained that this land is another important piece of the puzzle helping to preserve the Coast. “It also shows how we are getting the balance right as we strive to become the most sustainable region in Australia, economically, environmentally and socially,” he said. Environment portfolio Councillor Tony Wellington said that historically the types of rainforest on this site have been poorly conserved on the Coast. “This locale represents one of the most important wetland areas

left on the Sunshine Coast," Cr Wellington said. This recent purchase, together with the Doonan Creek Bushland Conservation Reserve and the nearby Doonan Wetland Conservation Area, will total 380ha of important habitat secured. “It helps protect the nationally recognised NoosaMaroochy Wallum Corridor and will support a range of rare and threatened plants and animals,” Cr Wellington said. Division 9 Councillor Stephen Robinson said he was pleased to see the site protected for the future. “This is so important for locals, and the region as a whole – I’m really pleased one of the most significant areas in my division is being looked after for future generations,” Cr Robinson said. The $60-a-year Environment Levy provides funds which allow Council and the community to work together to protect the long-term health of the Coast’s natural environment. The next step is to develop a long-term plan for the site that will consider management requirements and potential educational opportunities. For more information about the Noosa-Maroochy Wallum area turn to page 19.

This year’s Eumundi Agricultural Show is on Saturday 28 September, 8am sharp at the Eumundi Showgrounds, Black Stump Rd. Extra ridden and breed classes have been added to this year’s program. Also check show program for additional classes added to the Horticultural and Arts sections. Programs can be requested via email from Rick Templeton rick.templeton@bigpond.com. Cooroy-Noosa Family and Local History Group will hold their annual general meeting at 1pm on Saturday 7 September at 41 Miva St, Cooroy. Before the meeting, group member Edna

Smith will give a talk entitled The Crees Family - A Hundred Years in Cooroy. A Fundraising Garage Sale will be held by the Group on Saturday 14 September at 84 Werin St, Tewantin from 6.30am to 1pm. 5442 5570. Local jazz group Barefoot Highline played at the revamped Eumundi Winery and Brewery last Friday and are planning another night in October with a Riding for the Disabled (RDA) OktoberFest benefit. Also on the agenda at the end of September is a Sunday Long Lunch with catering from local chef Max Porter and locals can support the RDA by booking early. info@eumundiwinery.com

Councillor Rogerson update Congratulations to ECCO who have successfully gained approval from Council to run a 20 space Recreational Van (RV) park in Eumundi. RVs will be able to stop-over for up to two nights at the park on the corner of Albert St and Napier Rd. They’ll be charged $10 per vehicle per night and the long term plan is that ECCO will build an amenities block and install a BBQ and picnic area. The RV Friendly Park is a welcome addition to Eumundi and is sure to attract more travelling tourists into town. Eumundi State School needs to increase its car parking options and Council has developed a way forward. . There are still a number of hurdles to overcome, discussions to be had and, of course, funding to be found before more car parks are installed, but I am confident that a solution can be implemented in the not too distant future. Turn your clutter into cash for the National Garage Sale Trail on Saturday 26 October. Instead of taking old clothes, household and

electrical items, sports equipment and toys to the local tip you could take part in Australia’s largest and most successful community-based marketplace. It’s a great initiative that Council supports and it’s a fantastic way of redistributing items that might otherwise end up in landfill. Last year participants made an average of $400 and averaged six new neighbourly connections. It’s free to register for the National Garage Sale Trail, for more information visit www.garagesaletrail.com.au .

Councillor in Division 10 Cr Greg Rogerson

Glen Elmes - untangling for de-amalgamation Part of the de-amalgamation process is re-establishing the council structure and re-claiming buildings, community assets taken over by the Coast Council. Under usual circumstances, the transfer of assets would incur a

five per cent stamp duty based on the current value of the asset. Glen Elmes said he has saved Noosa ratepayers at least $13 million in stamp duty costs by introducing legislation into Parliament.

Local Candidates The 2013 Federal election’s local candidates for Fairfax Johanne Wright Our district is primarily in the Fairfax electorate with some parts of Doonan, Belli Park and Eerwah Vale in Wide Bay. There are eight candidates standing in Fairfax and seven in Wide Bay. In the Senate, there are four independents plus 78 candidates representing 37 different parties standing in Queensland. Eumundi Green has focused on the Fairfax electorate as the majority of our readers reside there. So who are our candidates in Fairfax in 2013, what would they do for our area and what are their key policies? Here is a snapshot of each candidate (in the order that they appear on the ballot paper) and a brief précis of their policies. 1 Mike Holt One Nation is a Vietnam veteran, a retired business man, married with two daughters and moved to Buderim five years ago.

2 Trudy Byrnes - Independent is a business and careers consultant with two grown children. She's a recent arrival to Coolum.

Mike sees Eumundi’s major issues as; having only two good business days; shop owners not benefiting from the markets; the need for local infrastructure projects (e.g. a pedestrian pathway across a local bridge); road maintenance. He believes business in the town need help to expand and grow and said he would work with the Council and local residents regarding infrastructure.

Trudy believes that the issue of jobs and employment is just as important here as elsewhere on the Coast. She is worried about the number of coastal small businesses closing down, and is committed to giving residents facts and not political spin. Trudy said, “There is no party platform or forced robotic message here.”

“If elected I will be a servant of the people. I will listen to what the people want and vote according to their will. I will always do what the electorate wants me to do, even if it conflicts with my own personal beliefs. This is the foundation of a real democracy,” Mike said.

As an independent not affiliated with any party, she does not have prescribed policies, but if elected, she said she would be a true voice for Fairfax. Trudy is passionate about business growth, opportunity for job seekers and social justice and her vision and views are well covered on her campaign.

3 Clive Palmer - Leader Palmer United Party is a wealthy business man who owns a number of companies including the Palmer Coolum Resort purchased three years ago. He is married with three children and lives in Coolum. Clive considers that Eumundi residents, like most Australians, have been let down and forgotten by the two party duopoly of Labor and the Coalition. He is committed to implementing policies which will lower taxes and get the economy moving again to once again be a prosperous and lucky country. Clive said, “We are committed to reducing taxes and will abolish the Fringe Benefits Tax (FBT) and cut tax on the second job to 50 per cent of what is currently paid. We’ll increase the aged pension by 20 per cent and will inject $80 billion into the health budget right across Australia. Reducing taxes will mean more money for Australians which in turn will stimulate growth and our economy.”

4 Ted O’Brien LNP mainly grew up on the Coast and moved to Buderim about five years ago. He is married with one baby daughter. He is a businessman, with local and international experience and strong community involvement. He is replacing the retiring member Alex Somlyay. For Ted the key issues for this region are sustainability of the local economy and job creation; the environment; and the protection of the area’s great community spirit and its fierce independence. If elected Ted said he would support diversification of the local economy. He would see funds from the Coalition’s Green Army initiatives used for the sub-tropical rainforest west of Eumundi. Economic policies are of primary importance with jobs, cost of living, taxes and redtape needing to be addressed to support small business and to reduce the high level of youth unemployment.

2013 Nambour Showgrounds Saturday 12 October 8am – 4pm 100 dealers and traders, with sales and displays of wonderful crystals, opals, jewellery, minerals and gemstones of every description. Entry $4 - children under 12 free. ATM on site. All under cover. For more information: Yvonne 0421 474 716

Local Candidates 5 Angela Meyer - Family First grew up in Kin Kin and lives in Forest Glen. She is married, a piano teacher and fitness trainer who has always been actively involved in her local community. Angela believes Eumundi’s issues are the lack of available employment; the increased cost of living; lack of support for local businesses; and the need for more infrastructure. Angela’s primary focus is on increasing opportunities for local employment, to lessen red tape and stop over-regulation by government. She believes that it is important to diversify our local economy and is committed to increasing local infrastructure. Angela wants to honestly represent the families of Fairfax, and make wise decisions for the common good that will help our area to thrive. “Family First is about strong families, strong values, and a strong Australia -the family is the fundamental unit of society and the government should respect, protect and assist the family and the institution of marriage upon which it depends,” Angela said.

6 Elaine Hughes - ALP is a long term Sunshine Coast resident living in Buderim. She is now single with two children. Elaine was a Crisis line supervisor with Lifeline and has a long history of community work and volunteering. Elaine said that Eumundi has a unique identity and issues in our area include the need to upgrade the Eumundi-Noosa Rd; poor TV reception; the need to flood proof some homes and youth unemployment. She would work with other levels of government to help to resolve these issues if elected. She believes that the NBN will have significant benefits for the community. Key policy areas to address are the lack of affordable housing and homelessness; health and the need to maintain access to services; and education. Her vision is for Australia to be the best in this Asian Century and the first step is to equip our young people to meet the demands of the future.

7 David Knobel -Greens lives in Nambour (since 2002). He is married with a young son. David is a community and cultural development worker and president of the Sunshine Coast Arts Industry Precinct. For David, the important issues for our area are greater support for small businesses; cost of living especially rising electricity prices; and protecting the environment. His party would address these by cutting the small company tax rate and raising the instant asset write off threshold; increasing the Renewable Energy Target and funding to drive investment into renewables; instituting the Energy Savings Agency to identify a fair price for residents with roof-top solar; strengthening environmental laws; making protection of national parks a Federal government responsibility, and investing $40 million a year to better protect critical habitat. David said, “We know people are struggling and we will raise the revenue from those who can afford it. The Greens stand up for a healthy environment, a caring society and a clean economy.”

8 Ray Sawyer - Katter’s Australian Party has strong family connections to the Coast but he works and lives in the north-side of Brisbane. He is married with one daughter. Ray is a local government employee. Ray considers that our area is unique and he is aware there are strong community groups working on state and local issues. He would work to ensure the current lifestyle of these communities continues. His party’s key policies are: preventing the extraction of coal seam gas within three kilometres of an aquifer; supporting the right of farmers and other citizens to manage their resources and live without uninvited interference; cutting the carbon tax; and giving small business the same rights as consumers in competition policies.

Voting day for the Federal Election is Saturday 7 September

In Wide Bay our five candidates are: Warren Truss LNP and sitting member; Lucy Stanton ALP; Gordon Dale KAP; Joy Ringrose Greens; Stephen Anderson PUP; Grace Dickins Rise up Australia Party and John Chapman Family First. Your say Wildlife Centre says thanks On behalf of the animals being cared for at the Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre I would like to thank the Eumundi & District Community Association for its very generous donation of $2,500. The WRC relies on donations such as this from organisations and individuals to supplement the grant it receives from Council and money raised through its own fundraising activities. All money goes towards funding operational and administration costs. Without such generosity the Centre would not be able to continue to assist Sunshine Coast native wildlife, injured or orphaned primarily due to urban encroachment. For further information on the Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre please visit our website www.wildliferehab.com. au or our Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/ habilitationCentreAtEumundi. Donations are always welcome and anything over $2 is tax deductible. If you would like to donate to assist the continued operation of the WRC please see

our website or Facebook page for details or visit the Centre at 1411 Eumundi Noosa Rd, Eumundi where your donation will be gratefully accepted. The Centre’s AGM will be held on Wednesday 9 October commencing at 7pm - probably in the CWA Hall in Eumundi (venue to be confirmed). Members, prospective members and visitors are invited to attend. Once again, thanks to EDCA for its generosity. Ken Hodges, Vice President, Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre.

Good news for business community Nobody wants to see empty shops in Eumundi and it is good news to see a quality and positive minded tenant like Paul McCaul (leather goods) move into shop 3 of the Old Bank Building in Memorial drive. After a short period which was used for a much needed clean-up and some refurbishments to the shop, Paul moved in on 1 August and has started marketing his quality leather products. Paul's move into the "Old Bank Centre" in Eumundi certainly is an excellent outcome for all. To celebrate Paul is offering 5 per cent discount on presentation of this article.

School of Arts turns 101! Its been a big 9 months since the Eumundi School of Arts centenary celebrations last year and our beloved community hall has needed some expensive care in the past year to help see it get through many, many more. For those unaware, this building is actually owned and looked after by our community, not by Council or State government but by Eumundi and a large dedicated group of people over its life and its many ups and downs. It was once a two storey building considered one of the finest in SE Qld when it was built in 1912, but an infestation by termites saw to it being lowered to one storey. Come celebrate the Eumundi School of Arts 101st Birthday with a Fundraiser Concert featuring 4 x ARIA and 7 x platinum selling songstress Katie Noonan and a wonderful array of her very talented musician friends. Tickets sold fast last year and we could have filled the hall twice so get in quickly. Schools and community kids Bookweek dressup at GSLC

On Friday 23 August Good Shepherd Lutheran College students from Prep to Year Five celebrated book week by dressing up as their favourite book characters.

Facelift for preschool Cooroy Community Preschool Assistant Teacher Angie Hargie (left) and Director Diana Markovits welcomed the start of renovations to the 75 year old building. Last year the Preschool Committee led by President Soraya McLean worked hard to secure a grant from the Renovation and Refurbishment Grant Program to add onto the building, verandah and sandpit in the garden.

When I Ran Away To the Circus Oscar Long (Ignite English, Eumundi State School) Travelling with a circus to an incredible 28 countries in a mere 10 months and only 8 years old…. this was something that I loved and most people only get to dream about. This whirlwind of travel started when my mum and dad got a job with the circus Cirque du Soleil. I travelled with my family who experienced this amazing tour with me. New Zealand, Mexico, Russia, Ukraine, Holland, Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia, England and Scotland are just some of the countries I have been fortunate enough to visit. Although I loved all the places, my favourite was Amsterdam in the Netherlands because there was so much to see and do including going to the Anne Frank House, Van Gogh Museum, Maritime

Museum, Bird Zoo and an added bonus was that the food was the most delicious food my taste buds have ever have had the pleasure of tasting! One of the most memorable moments was when I went to France and saw the catacombs. I never thought that seeing dead bodies and bones in the catacombs would be a highlight of my travels. Seeing the Eiffel Tower is another great memory. I felt as small as an ant as I tilted my head back and peered towards the top of this huge, world renowned landmark. It looked bold and proud as it stood out among Paris’ beautiful wonders. One of the most amazing people I met was the Circue du Soleil props manager Elyn. She taught me many great, amazing things about science, how things work, animals and how they live. This experience has whet my travel appetite, I wish I could go to more great places and see more amazing things and meet more amazing people. I loved travelling with the circus!

Schools and community kids Raw Art comes to Eumundi State School Jack Beardsley (Year 6) and Reuben Gemmell (Year 7)

ECCO community services

- Ignite English, Eumundi State School From clay work to painting, collage to sculpture and classrooms booming excitedly creating all different sorts of artwork, sounds like Raw Art has started. Raw Art is a time when all kids (and even teachers) have the opportunity to have fun and be creative. The talented Raw Art team has an awesome range of artistic techniques and skills to share with all the Eumundi State School students from Prep to Year Seven. The happiness from creating and establishing art can be seen on all the students’ enthusiastic faces.

Making our town more beautiful

An incredible finished product of clay work animal heads from Year 7.

We are proud to be associated with this year’s Arts in Action festival at Eumundi State School through the artwork now hung at the top of the town in front of the empty building site. ECCO engaged Cartoon Dave Hackett to curate the project as a lead activity for students for the festival and has also sponsored the cost of the materials for the project. We congratulate Dave, his assistant Marlee Abraham, the teachers and students plus the volunteers who helped along the way to create a vibrant artwork and hopefully a distraction from what lays beyond. Winton Blair (left) and Mason Phillips (right) proudly show off their amazing paper sculptures.

Every student in every class has helped paint what is a striking improvement to a highly visible site that has been in disrepair since the appointment of receivers. Thank you also to Caroline and Michael Arnett of the Imperial Hotel for making space available to add the finishing touches to panels before hanging last week. Congratulations also and thanks to Fran Maguire who has captured each of the panels digitally and created a display of the artwork which is on the wall of the school hall.

Look at what’s in the nursery Look out too for improvements to Memorial Dr over the next few weeks! Artists totally absorbed in creating their art works.

Eumundi Arts Indee Theatre John Burls

Arts in Action at ESS

It is crunch time at The Indee for the big September school holidays production of The Wind in the Willows. The youth theatre side, which has been rehearsing many of the production numbers for the past couple of months, is integrating with the adult members of the cast. There is an old stage adage for adult actors - “never work with dogs or children” – but our adult team are old hands at it, in fact they love it. Debbie Pitura, Keith Souter and Ruth Montgomery have been down the path many times and the youngsters love working with them.

Eumundi State School enjoyed their annual Arts in Action celebrations last Friday. The day is the culmination of a term's worth of creative endeavours with every class decorating their room beautifully. There were also fantastic performances throughout the day from Eumundi's Got Talent finalists. Teacher's and the P&C organising team, lead by Karen Allen, dressed as their favourite characters, adding a little extra magic to the day for the excited kids. An artwork by each class was auctioned to raise money for the school.

The Wind in the Willows has been specially adapted for The Indee stage as a musical, laugh-packed adventure. The flamboyant Mr Toad has a new passion every week from an old horse-drawn caravan to a series of brightly coloured cars; he is in the thick of it, leaving chaos in his path. The Riverbank dwellers Ratty, Mole, Dormouse, the Bunnies, the Weasel Gang and the very patient Mr Plod the policeman all do their best to make sure Mr Toad comes to no harm - but it's not easy.

This is a delightful show and represents very low cost school holiday entertainment. Tickets $12 all ages, family passes (two adults, two children) $40. Free popcorn for the under 12s! Performances 5pm Friday 27 September, 4pm Saturday 28 and 11am Sunday 29 plus 4pm Saturday 5 October and 3pm Sunday 6. It is table seating so make sure of your seats by booking now 5472 8200 or www.eumundilivetheatre.com. A reminder too to start getting your groups together for the new topical revue Laugh Out Loud dinner show opening on Friday 29 November for two weekends. Book now - pay a month before. Celebrate Food Food that feeds a family's heart Nic Makim

Salmon, Quinoa and Roasted Vegetable Salad

Ingredients • • • • • • I love everything about food! Of course delicious and nutritious comes at the top of the list but the growing, creating, cooking, sharing - and the wonderful powers of food as medicine - are the other reasons I love food. Growing up I spent hours cooking in the kitchen and digging in the veggie patch with my granny and mum. I pursued my passion for cooking by training as a Cordon Bleu cook. I used to love balancing my catering business with my showjumping and point-to-pointing. These days, as I try and juggle my three kiddies, work and life and we seem to sort everything

out around the kitchen table. We all love to create something from fresh, local produce; Joe’s speciality is making damper and cooking it on the campfire, Sophie is our little pizza queen, Jocko loves making tomato sauce from tomatoes from our garden and Dools loves devouring the lot. As a holistic nutritionist I love sharing my knowledge of the therapeutic benefits of food and helping others integrate functional foods into their diets. My health advice begins with nutritional food. I believe that the food we eat has an enormous effect on health and state of mind.

1 handful snow peas 1 handful green beans 4 cherry tomatoes 1 avocado 1 fillet cooked salmon 3 heaped tblsp cooked quinoa • 1 handful roasted veggies of your choice • 1 tblsp mixed seeds • 1 handful mixture lettuce leaves Alkalizing Dressing In a jar mix together: • 3 - 6 cloves garlic, crushed • 2 tblsp tamari • 1 tblsp chia seeds • 2 lemons, juiced • 6 tblsp apple cider vinegar • Himalayan rock salt and pepper • Flax seed oil, chia oil and/ or olive oil, enough to fill the jar.

Health and Lifestyle Going chemical free for hair Ashlee Collins I often find myself staring at my beautiful babies, admiring their flawless skin, white teeth, shiny hair - they are so pure! I think about the world they are growing up in, with all the plastics, sulfates, preservatives and artificial everything, and I worry for them. I went to the shops recently to get some body wash for the kids in the baby section and was so disappointed to see that most of the products "designed for kids" contained ingredients like sodium lauryl sulfate, ammonium lauryl sulfate, artificial fragrances (to name a few. All of these are toxic

chemicals used in cleaning products - no wonder it stings if you get it in your eyes! It’s been reported that absorbing these chemicals though the skin/scalp is actually worse than swallowing them as the enzymes in saliva will break down and flush out the chemicals. When these toxic chemicals are applied to skin it absorbs into the bloodstream without any filtration. So I started researching and researching and researching. I have discovered you can get amazing sulfate free and 100 per cent vegan products. Vegan basically means

it doesn’t contain any animal by- products, isn’t tested on animals, is paraben free and uses only natural ingredients. I also discovered an organisation called Green Cross Australia which endorses environmentally friendly products, helps people embrace sustainability and adapt to a changing climate. www.greencrossaustralia.org. I am quickly putting a stop to chemicals in our house and in my business and feel so much better for it! Health and Lifestyle An introduction to Tai Chi Inger Vinogradov Spring transformation Donna Thordarson Drink plenty of pure fresh water - this will flush out toxins. Add some freshly squeezed lemon juice to a glass of room temperature water and drink first thing in the morning. Lemons alkalize your body chemistry and help cleanse your liver, kidneys and colon.

Tai Chi is a Martial Art practiced for both defence training and health benefits. There are many different kinds of Tai Chi. The one we practice here in Eumundi is Yang Shung which literally means "to nurture life". It is also what the Australian Academy of Tai Chi practices. Traditional Chinese Medicine is a 2000-year-old practice that proffers the art of longevity and good health. The ancient philosophers saw humans interact with yin and yang energy (QI) from heaven and earth. In order to survive we must live in accordance with nature. Disruption in the energy balance will lead to sickness and chaos! The aim and focus is to get the energy in the body flowing properly to restore, improve and maintain health. With regular practice there is improved circulation and flexibility, a benefit to the whole body, including tendons, joints,

spine, connective tissues and internal organs. Tai Chi also restores the calmness and peace of mind which may be missing due to the stressful lives we live. The exercises we do are slow and gentle but every part of the body is engaged. As you concentrate on the next movement you relax and meditate. It looks very easy and maybe boring to some - but it is not. It takes time - and patience - to learn. Every step is thoughtfully acted upon. It is like moving in slow motion. Please try Tai Chi! It is so much easier to move fast. Apart from the above mentioned health benefit, it is, of course, a social benefit too, which is almost as important! If you are interested in trying Tai Chi with the Eumundi group you can contact Inger on 5442 7368 or pivino@bigpond.com

Health Matters It’s National Hearing Awareness Week

So how do we bounce into spring? Here are some of my ideas on how to invite vibrancy, health and wellbeing into your day. Simplify and lighten up your meals by eating lots of fresh veggies and some seasonal fruit. Make at least 70 per cent of every meal vegetables - include plenty of greens. Enjoy a fresh vegetable juice, a large green salad or a plate of steamed, roasted or stir-fried veggies. Add to this your choice of healthy clean Karma Free high protein. Ease the burden on your digestive system, take a break from high acidic and heavy mucus forming foods. Eliminate processed and packaged foods and anything high in sugar, carbohydrates and trans fats. Exercise improves circulation - get your blood pumping, include some fun well balanced exercise like Yoga, walking in nature, cycling, swimming in the ocean. This revitalises your organs and tissues with fresh oxygenated blood. Fresh air and sunshine - take some time to enjoy the bounty and abundance of spring outside!

Environment and Outdoors Life on a better ridge - springing into Spring Claudette Betterridge

Along with warm days, cloudless blue skies and blankets kicked to the end of beds there are a number of other things telling me Spring is definitely on the way here to our better ridge (regardless of what month it is). The Wisteria that last year was only just showing buds in October has started to bloom wildly and our much anticipated sweet peas are showing lilac amongst their lush greenery. Spring is not only a time for baby chickens to hatch and beautifully fragrant plants to flower, it also brings with it a flourishing of all life, even those bits we do not find so attractive! We have noticed a huge resurgence in the bindii population (something that comes as quite a shock to the anticipation of bare feet on warm grass) and mosquito wrigglers in pot plant bases. Frogs can be heard calling day and night (even without impending rain) and I noticed a flighty magpie high in a gum tree take a swoop at the Noisy Miner who happened to cross its path. So, like anyone anticipating balmy evenings outside in the months to come, we have become proactive doing what we can to help our environment nurture us well into the warmer seasons. We have planted loads more salad greens and their pest reducing companions (tomatoes, basil, marigolds, shallots etc). We have made a frog pond to encourage our mosquito wriggler eating

18

Eumundi Green

friends and tipped out and rectified any receptacle in which water can pool and breed mozzies. In terms of the bindii, many have been chipped out with a small hoe or knife and those that remain or sprout back will be rectified with a dash of boiling water (a very handy chemical-free solution). The parts of the yard flourishing most with these weeds were subject to excavation and compaction earlier in the year and this is a common response from soil aiming to alter its pH and nutrient density. In order to help this soil return to balance without having to go through its usual (and long) cycle of weed development we will also fertilize these areas and encourage grass runners to gain the upper hand. With any luck by Summer this area will be a lush shoe-free picnic spot once again. As for the magpies, there is little more we can do than stay away from their preferred trees and once again adorn the kids’ bicycle helmets with cable ties to ward off any territorial swooping. Like all of life there are positive and negative sides to every situation. The fragrant blooms always bring a deep sense of gratitude for the magnificence of nature and intelligent design and we are extraordinarily lucky to be able to reduce any negative impacts that might be felt due to this change in season. For the rest we just need to maintain a balance in our attitude and know that, just like Winter, this too will pass.

The latest from the Wildlife Centre Matt Popplewell

It appears that Spring has sprung a little earlier this year. The hills are alive with the sound of nesting birds. It is an exciting time but a perilous one for much of our wildlife. Being well into the breeding season, the birds are on the ground looking for nesting material and many have already produced young. Many of our marsupials have young in the pouch - both possums and roos. Blue-tongue lizards are awake and on the march. With so much activity on the ground the inevitable clash of domesticated animals, like cats and dogs, with our wildlife begins. We have already seen a stream of birds and Blue-tongue lizards plucked from jaws. Sadly many of our fledglings never recover from the ordeal. It is a time to ask for extra care, watch your pets particularly dogs. It is also time to

bring the cats in at night and let nature have some peace. The miner bird is a common patient at this time of year with nesting in full operation. The nest is built in prickly or leafy trees, and the Noisy Miner often nests in eucalypts and wattles. It prefers moderately dense foliage, often near the end of drooping horizontal branches. Females build the nest, which is deep, cupshaped and woven of twigs and grasses with other plant material, animal hair and spider webs. Occasionally the nest will include man-made materials; twine, material scraps and tissue paper. Noisy Miner females walk around on the ground close to the nest site picking up materials and it is there she becomes vulnerable to our domestic pets. Please do your best to monitor them and protect our birds during this breeding season. As ever, we thank you for your diligence.

Nature Notes Daddy-long-legs Spiders Kon Hepers

Some arachnologists (spider experts) say that there is nowhere on earth, except the polar ice caps, where we are not within two or three metres distance of a spider. That is certainly evident at our place, especially in my shower cubicle. Up in the corner where the wall meets the ceiling is the place a persistent spider has chosen to make home - and home is a tangled unsightly web. Making the web even messier are the skeletons of dead insects and other spiders just left hanging

in the web. Housekeeping is not this spider’s priority, of course it does not want to impress visitors – it wants to eat them - so it just sits upside down on the web and waits. It can detect the slightest touch of an insect or preferably another spider on its web and pounces to enmesh the hapless prey. If it perceives danger it turns the web so rapidly that it almost becomes invisible. Of course that does not fool a broom or vacuum cleaner but if the danger is from a larger spider or prey item its long legs

allow the spider to stand well back and throw threads of silk over the intruder to entangle it prior to sucking out its life juices. This spider is a Daddy-Longlegs, Pholcus phalangioides (meaning squint-eyed and finger-like), probably the most recognised spider on earth. It is found in the temperate, subtropical and tropical zones of all continents. Since being introduced to Australia from Europe it now inhabits the entire eastern half of this continent. Daddy-Long-legs are a very frail, anorexic looking spider. When handled they first try to run away then roll up into a ball, often losing a leg or two in the process. They can move quite fast heading for a dark corner to hide. "Squint-eyed" probably refers to the way their eight eyes are arranged. Females have a body length of about 8–10mm with their eight legs up to 70mm long. Males are somewhat smaller. Tiny hatchling spiders hang in the web and are guarded by Mum for about 10 days before making their own way.

We always believed that DaddyLong-legs venom was extremely potent since they are known to preferentially prey on other spiders including much larger, highly venomous species such as Red-back Spiders. In fact their venom is quite mild and certainly no danger to humans especially as the delivery dose is very small. They manage to overcome and kill other spiders simply because they are quicker and enmesh the other spiders before they themselves are trapped. The spider in my shower cubicle certainly proves the old sayings about spiders trying and trying again. No sooner is it removed on a broom than it returns and makes another web. We should actually encourage Daddy-Long-legs as they are good hunters of mosquitoes and flies as evidenced by the "trophies" hanging in their webs. However, it is the untidy webs that are their undoing and it will not be long before this one has a reunion with its mates in the dust bag of the vacuum cleaner.

Gardening Lemons Annie Wilson

Originating in Asia, the lemon tree can be found in many backyards. I love lemons because they are so useful. In cooking they are versatile and delicious - refreshing cordials, delightful salad dressings, yummy desserts and more. Lemons are reputed to provide many health benefits, and are an especially good source of Vitamin C. The acidity of the juice also makes this clever fruit an excellent ingredient in household and industrial cleaners. Our backyard lemon trees are bearing almost ripe fruit and another flush of flowers

has begun to set more fruit so it looks like it is going to be a great year for lemons. Caring for established lemon trees is quite simple - they like a really thick collar of straw mulch that does not touch their trunk and an occasional application of citrus fertiliser or good compost. Yellowing leaves are most often a sign that the tree needs to be fed. Any dead wood can be removed to make fruit picking easier but is not vital. Do you have a favourite use for lemons? Forgotten Eumundi

These two shots were taken in late 2008. I know you had a photo of this in a fairly recent edition of Eumundi Green but these show a very different side to the old place. I couldn't decide which one to send. Steve Moon

Eumundi sunshine Over the next couple of months Eumundi Green would love you to capture Spring/Summer in our beautiful part of the world; whether it’s a view, animals, an event – or perhaps a friend or family member enjoying the sunshine! Send your high resolution photos and a caption to editor@eumundigreen.com.au and we may print them in the magazine. Happy snapping! Wednesday 4 September 2013

Eumundi abroad Antarctica Babette Urban If you have never been to Antarctica I can strongly recommend it as an item for your bucket list. Cheap? …no. Expensive? …not excessively. Besides, do we live to work or work to live? I did the former until I realised that it just does not pay to miss out on the special moments in life. So back to Antarctica ... a two week tour of this pristine environment is absolutely awe inspiring and life changing. Our cruise included several daily outings in little Zodiacs to take us to land and sailing amongst the icebergs, whales, seals and penguins. The humpback whales were curious, enthralling us for hours by swimming placidly from one Zodiac to the other and "eye-balling" us at very close range. The seals were so playful that one even had a nibble on the propeller of our outboard motor. The penguins were adorable, with fluffy babies tumbling around and squawking after their mums for a feed.

I cannot do justice to the scenery by describing it, you really have to be there to feel the magic. I hope my photos will give you a tiny taste of what is waiting there for you to experience.
