Business and Community News Imperial opening gorgeous in green A crowd of around 300 locals came along to the unveiling of the new look Imperial upstairs. The Green Room has been transformed beautifully by owner and designer Caroline Arnett into a place filled with rich green light and unique objects.

New additions to the space include an airconditioned sports viewing room AND a kids room with a CCTV security camera.

But standing on the beautiful verandah again - cleaned and revamped - was the real pleasure for those with fond memories of the old pub.

Imperial’s loyalest and oldest patron Bill cut the vine to declare the Green Room open, as owners Michael and Carol Arnett looked on.

EHA major donation to Wildlife Centre

Community News Councillor Rogerson update Council has launched the first regional economic development strategy – a collaboration between council, business and community to deliver a new economy that is more prosperous, resilient and productive. The region needs to take significant strides in a new direction in order to create the right conditions to attract investment, increase career options, raise average incomes and help our community prosper. Council’s plan has a 20 year outlook to make us more competitive, demand-driven and responsive to national and global markets. The ambitious but achievable goals for 2033

include: tripling our economy to $33 billion, increasing household incomes above the state average, doubling the export of goods and services to 20 per cent, and increasing high-value jobs to 100,000. The launch of the strategy is the beginning of the journey, with 40 clear actions to be delivered in the first five years.

Flashing lights for Sunshine Beach school Member for Noosa, Glen Elmes said safety around school zones will be improved with the installation of flashing lights on roads across the Coast where there is a significant crash history, high level of car and pedestrian traffic, higher speed limits or visibility problems. In 2012, there were 24,842 fines issued in school zones in Qld– an increase of 44 per cent from 2011. Of the fines issued, between January and December 2012, a concerning 317 were motorists travelling at more than 30km/h above the speed limit, with 43 drivers travelling more than 40km/h above the speed limit.

“I am pleased that Sunshine Beach State School will receive flashing lights by 6 December to alert motorists they’re approaching a school zone,” Mr Elmes said.

He explained that the State Govt has committed $10 million over four years to install flashing school lights at over 300 school zones in Qld. With speeding motorists continuing to be a huge problem around Eumundi State School and a serious accident having occurred in the past, there is a hope that Eumundi State School will also be considered for flashing safety lights before the year’s end.

Your Say Thoughtless waste disposal is costly I would like to start by saying I have enormous admiration for the people of the Sunshine Coast, especially Eumundi folk, who have the famous markets which has everything organic, green and alternative. However, I was given a rude awakening when I helped with Clean up Australia Day. I was allotted to walk along one of the main streets of Eumundi, cleaning up and collecting rubbish, complete with my two huge bags, which I filled with rubbish and recycle items within a very short distance.

Through necessity I decided to put recycle items into the bins that were out in readiness for Monday collection. I raised the lid and shock horror -the contents were contaminated.

Bottles in plastic bags, reading journals still in their plastic wraps, plus green waste and general rubbish, this would all end up in landfill as it is no longer recyclable. I thought this must be a one off but at the next bin I found it too was contaminated. Seven bins later - Hallelujah! I finally found a resident who understood how

to dispose of their rubbish correctly. Unfortunately for me, I was only one third of the way along the street and had to repeat this exact same process again. Thankfully, I found one other conscientious resident.

For that entire long street only two residents got a gold star.

I shared my disappointment with my team leader who told me this occurs all over the Sunshine Coast.

Come on Sunshine Coast, surely we can do better than this? Do we really need to be like European countries who fine people for not recycling correctly and/ or refuse to pick up rubbish if it is not disposed of according to council by laws.

In South Australia, where they have toughened up their council bylaws, they have increased their recycling ability from a measly 20 per cent to a much more respectable 80 per cent.

I believe we can achieve these results, without being threatened with fines, if we all just put a little more time, effort and thought into how we dispose of our waste.

Fortunate wildlife The animals that are being cared for at the Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre on the Eumundi Noosa Road are very fortunate that the Centre is located in Eumundi. I say this because of the generosity of the people and organisations of Eumundi and surrounding areas who give so much of their time and money to help with the care and rehabilitation of the injured wildlife. The Eumundi Historical Association (EHA) is the latest organisation that deserves our gratitude. At the EHA AGM held on 25 Sept, the Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre was the very grateful recipient of a donation of $20,000.

Without such generosity the Centre would not be able to continue to operate, and we are truly thankful to EHA for their ongoing commitment to the Centre. The final two performances of the school holiday show The Wind in the Willows – The Very Big Adventures of Mr Toad, will be this Saturday 5 October at 4pm and Sunday 6 October at 3pm.

Questions of Travel is two storylines: one of self-indulgence and one of necessity. Laura joins the ranks of young Australians drifting their way to Europe and back, her travel reflecting her own lack of direction. Ravi on the other hand is dragged from Sri Lanka by the threat of violence, arriving in Australia to seek refuge. These central characters are uninspiring, perhaps deliberately. This is a book whose purpose is revealed more from its form than its characterization.

Throughout the novel the plot shifts between Ravi and Laura. Like a vanishing point the parallel storylines seem destined to meet on the page as per convention. But when they do, de Kretser avoids predictability with the meeting’s insignificance. They don’t fall in love, save each other and ride off into the sunset. Initially they barely notice one another and their lives continue towards their vanishing point, only in closer spatial proximity. They are just two amongst countless travellers in motion around the globe: improbably meeting with mixed results.

De Kretser thoroughly fleshes out characters and settings that fringe the main plotlines, giving them complexity, depth, and importantly, a sense of purpose. The two main characters on the other hand drift through, connecting but barely sub-plotting these lives and places.

Perhaps authentic lives have roots needing to hold onto something to have lasting consequence, whereas the traveller passes through disengaged from the real.

Questions of Travel highlights inequality that is topical in current political discourse. Laura is able to come and go as she pleases: her right to stay, work and participate in the society she lands is unquestioned. Ravi would prefer to stay at home but is violently forced to seek refuge in Australia, and faces the populist myth that refugees are probably economic migrants that should be treated with suspicion. For the basic human function of movement, our permission to act let alone possess the required means is asymmetric.

Questions of Travel won this year’s Miles Franklin adding to its haul of this year’s literary awards. Arts prizes via their subjective reality arouse controversy and as usual there will be those that question the choice. Similarly a retrospective comparison to previous winners is moot. De Kretser’s writing - like her subject - transports the reader.

I was willingly immersed in the sensation of an East Coast Australian summer, then unwillingly transported back to the parasitic setting of corporate office culture, on a detour past the horrors of civil unrest; daydreams and nightmares just pages apart. The writing avoids cliché in form and metaphor, perhaps introducing some new ideas to the genre. But best of all Michelle de Kretser’s work got me thinking – about purpose, impermanence, place, equality. All this while wishing I had even a fraction of her craft to better communicate why Questions of Travel is worth committing your time to read. Valid criteria to win a prize or two perhaps?

Schools and community kids What I love: Three Cheeky Munchkins Celeste Cockram Year 4, ESS Ignite English Three dogs, two cats, three fish and four chickens. Anyone would think that twelve animals would be enough for a ten year old to love. But one phone call changed everything! At first Mellina offered me one guinea pig, then two and by the time I hung up the phone I was the owner of three lovable guinea pigs. Now my twelve animals have grown to fifteen, but I still think I have a big enough heart for more.

Chop! Chop! Cutting carrots and apples for the very healthy appetites of my guinea pigs takes considerable time each morning.

They love fresh fruit and grass.

Along with this, the diet of my guinea pigs, Snowy, Chocco and Nibbles, requires added nutrients which I buy pre-made to ensure they are strong and healthy.

putting gel on. Always hungry, Nibbles has adorable caramelcoloured fur, with a white dot above his eyes. When I give my guinea pigs carrot or apple pieces, Nibbles always takes the biggest piece of fruit. Last but not least is Chocco. He has a dark coffee-coloured fur coat with two off-white splodges. He is scruffy and timid but still loves his food.

Waking up at six-thirty every morning to feed them, fill up their water, give them a cuddle and clean out their cage is how each day begins. Sometimes they are lucky when I have a friend over as they get a walk in their harness.

Washing them does not happen often because they are very rarely dirty. I take them for walks, take pictures of them, cuddle them and even do my homework with them!

Three fur balls covered in fur, with a passion for food and a loving heart, what more could you want? … More animals!

Eumundi swimmers, Troy Carlson 11, Zac Templeton 13, and Andrew Cowan 25, recently competed at the Qld State Short Course Championships in Brisbane. All swam exceptionally well with personal best times recorded in most of their events. They also won a number of medals and top 10 placings - which were fantastic personal achievements and a very proud moment for the club.

Elise Forward had also made the qualifying time and entered in the Girls 13 years 50m Breastroke, but unfortunately had to withdraw due to injury.

Eumundi Arts Local artist plays with landscape Eumundi’s resident contemporary abstract artist Amy Clarke is channelling the creativity of her childhood as she prepares for her next exhibition. Celebrate Food Bombay tart Words and photos Alain Bouvier I recently had the pleasure of photographing local chef Monica Topliss’s new gluten free cookbook. Readers might remember the gluten free food stall Monica had at the Eumundi Market a few years back? Little did she know this would lead her

to her current role as head chef of organic café Kunara in Forest Glen. Born in England of Italian parents, and classically trained as a chef, she was reared on healthy mediterranean cuisine.

When Monica was diagnosed with Coeliac disease at 24, it

lead to her cooking only gluten free food. She became inspired to experiment with ingredients and create the best gluten free food, not only for her own health and wellbeing but also her lucky customers. I would like to share one of my favorite recipes

from her new book Topliss in the Kitchen. This Bombay Tart is fresh and flavoursome, bright and colourful and is a joy to make and to eat. The spiced onions are also great in salads, sandwiches and as part of an antipasto platter, so make extra!

Bombay Tart Serves 8

Ingredients • 500g vegan gluten free pastry (recipe in cookbook or

available to buy at Kunara Food Store)

200g carrots 350g sweet potato 10g psyllium 2 tsp salt 100g split red lentils 20g baby spinach 240g broccoli florets 450g spiced onions (recipe attached) 75g cashew cheese 20ml lime juice 1 tblsp chopped fresh coriander 50g semi dried tomatoes

Method Preheat oven to 160°C. Roll out pastry on a sheet of baking paper to a circle large enough to fit a 24cm loose bottomed tart tin. Lift paper and pastry into tin. Bake for 20 mins or until pale golden.

Remove from oven and place on a cooling rack. Peel carrots and sweet potato. Chop into 2cm chunks. Place into a pot of water, bring to the boil and cook for approx 20 mins, or until soft. Drain well.

Bring a separate pot of water to the boil and add the broccoli florets. Boil for two mins, then remove using tongs. Plunge florets into a bowl of iced water to cool. Drain and squeeze water from broccoli.

Use the pot full of water from the broccoli and bring back to the boil. Add the split red lentils, and simmer for approx 10 minutes or until just cooked.

Drain.

Place cooked carrots, sweet potato and psyllium into a bowl and mash. Add salt and cooked red lentils. Mix well. Spoon the mash into the tart shell, scatter with baby spinach leaves, and top with broccoli. Spread spiced onions over broccoli, and return the tart back to oven for 15 mins.

Mix the cashew cheese with lime juice, and pipe over the top of spiced onions in a lattice pattern. Roughly chop semidried tomatoes and scatter over tart with chopped coriander.

Spiced Onions Makes 600g

Ingredients • 60ml sunflower oil • 1.2kg onions • 2 tsp grated garlic • 1 tbls grated ginger • 3 tsp ground coriander • 3 tsp cumin seeds • 1 tsp ground cardamom • 1 tsp cracked black pepper • 1 tsp dried chilli flakes • 1/2 tsp tumeric • 1 tbls rapadura sugar • 1 tsp salt

Method Peel and finely slice onions.

Place oil in wide pot and when hot, add the onions.

Cook over a high heat stirring frequently for 10 mins.

Reduce heat and cook onions for 30 mins. Add garlic and ginger. Cook for a further 10 mins. Add spices, sugar and salt and cook for 2 mins.

Remove from heat.

Health and Lifestyle Broccoli - a healthy vegie in more ways than one Matt Popplewell As a child, it was a veggie that fitted nicely on the head of the spoon and was fired across the table at the sister I loved to hate. Since learning though that this mineral packed vegie can forestall pains that cripple us as we age, I have a new found respect. A new study shows that eating broccoli helps prevent or slow osteoarthritis, the common complaint from the wearing out of joint cartilage in our hands, hips, knees and feet.

Researchers have now found that sulforaphane - a compound usually found in broccoli - slows down the destruction of that

cartilage. This has been proven in three laboratory models trialled on cartilage cells, tissue and mice. The next tests are planned for humans - any volunteers?

It is also believed that as well as treating those who already have the condition, it may well aid healthy people protect their joints for the future. More than 1.6 million people in Australia have osteoarthritis; there are thousands of hand, feet, hip and knee replacement surgeries performed annually across the country. It most commonly affects people over the age of 50 and is more prevalent in women

than men. There is currently no cure. Aging and obesity are the most common contributors to the painful and often debilitating condition and it is predicted the number of people seeking treatment will rise sharply by 2035. This is a very valuable study; until now research hadn’t shown that food or diet can play a part in reducing the progression of osteoarthritis, so if these findings can be replicated in humans it would be something special. As a vegetable, broccoli is also rich in dietary fibre, minerals and antioxidants, and is high in vitamins C and A.

Previous research suggested that sulforaphane has anticancer and anti-inflammatory properties, but this is the first major study into its effects on joint health. So its broccoli soup tonight folks‌and less achy joints tomorrow!

Dancing is my passion. People think it’s crazy that I spend up to thirty hours a week inside a dance studio training hard but it’s just what I do. I love dance - I practically breathe it! I love the difficulty and impossibility of it all; I mean it’s not exactly natural to stretch all your limbs to the extreme for the sake of flexibility and to do one hundred and fifty straight leg push-ups, sit-ups and jumping squats for strength.

I also adore the performance side of dance and being able to showcase my passion to a

It’s amazing though to get to that point, the amount of dedication involved is completely insane. Thirty hours a week practicing and rehearsing a myriad of dance styles including jazz, ballet, pointe, contemporary, lyrical, hip hop, acrobatics, contortion, choreography and, of course, stretch and strength. I guess to normal kids my age I must seem a bit strange; I mean why would I spend my spare time perfecting my sport while I could be at the beach or the movies like everyone else?

Yet I feel like that’s almost the whole point- being called dedicated is something you earn not something someone can give you. I’m sure kids who do other sports would agree with me. The dedication needed for dance would be the same as a competitive gymnast or swimmer or runner. It’s just like any other sport; you have to put in just as much as you hope to get out. If you want a career in the dance industry you have to be pretty amazing and be good at anything the choreographers challenge you with. That basically means spending most of your childhood in a dance studio practising and improving your technique, skills and artistry. To become the best you have to train like the best.

It’s in my nature to actively steer away from commercial representations of any sort. At Christmas time I banish reds and greens and instead decorate my tree with brightly coloured cocktail umbrellas. Santa brings the socks and undies while Mum and Dad get to give the ‘good’ presents. My family deals daily with food intolerances, so we don’t ‘do’ Easter chocolate and Halloween - well in this country I won’t even go there!

However, on the better ridge at the moment, life is full of bright blossoms, newly green leaves and chirping baby chicks. It is so stereotypically spring that I am falling unabashedly under its spell!

I can’t walk outside without commenting on the sweet smell of the jasmine in flower, the vibrancy of the giant hibiscus or the intense cuteness of the teeny balls of fluff huddled around their protective mother in our chook pen. Although the newest members of our family flock seem to grow before our very eyes it will be 4-6 months before they are adding to our daily egg tally. Until then though they are a great source of entertainment and amusement for two kids on school holidays and a beautiful reminder of where our spring stereotypes originated.

Native Bees Jim Yaxley Australian stingless native bees live mainly in the tropical and sub-tropical north of the continent. There are around 1500 families of native bee in Australia with about ten species being social. The two main social honey producing sub-species are Austroplebeia and Trigona (formerly tetragonula). They are approximately 4mm long and black, resembling the common bush fly. Their hives have workers, drones and a queen much like their distant relative the honey bee, though they store their honey in pots made from wax and plant resins and not wax comb. The Trigona species have the habit of building a spiral brood which makes it easier to distinguish them from other species, and construct their hives in the hollows of trees and sometimes under rocks in homes and fence posts. Honey can range in flavour and is usually stronger than that of honey bees – honey from the Grevillea and paperbark is exceptional.

Native stingless typically produce about a cup to 1.5kgs of honey per annum, and though hardy can be susceptible to demise if robbed during cold weather or a hard season. More and more people are keeping these little creatures for pollination and honey. Their popularity is increased with the absence of sting and it’s enjoyable to watch them flying to and from their hive, though on robbing nests they will crawl into every orifice on the face.

These insects are virtual relics from the time of dinosaurs remaining almost unchanged from the Cretaceous period with the oldest fossil (Trigona prisca) dating from 146-74 million years ago. They can be found encapsulated in amber from various parts of the world where the land once existed as tropical regions.

Concept plans for an amenities block for day and RV overnight visitors at the car park are moving through the building application process with Council. The block if approved involves the use of a second hand 40' shipping container as the structural enclosure of the necessary facilities. Whilst the container is environmentally sustainable in recycling a used manufacture and “cheap as chips”, aesthetically, when looking at the building, the viewer would likely never know it started life as a container as cladding will cover it inside and out. The plan is for the external wall facing Napier Rd to include large scale graphics showing an aspect of the creative arts of Eumundi. The building will utilise rainwater from its roof and solar hot water.

Providing there is a green light with final in-house approvals and Council permissions, expect to see the amenities block close to the Albert St perimeter of the car park by the end of summer.

Nature Notes Drongos Kon Heppers Our Spangled Drongo,

Every October a brassy chattering and whistling announces that the Spangled Drongos have returned from “up North”. They are one of a number of migratory species who spend the winter in North Queensland, on New Guinea or other SE Asian locations.

Arriving at roughly the same time are Forest Kingfishers, Dollarbirds, Cicadabirds, several smaller Cuckoo species and the night-calling Koels and Channel-

billed Cuckoos.

When we were kids the word ‘drongo’ was very commonly used amongst us to denote a harmless fool and later on we were yelled at as ‘a bunch of drongos’ by our drill sergeants if our drill was not smart enough. We never worked out whether we or the birds should feel insulted. The name actually comes from a native Madagascan language where a closely related species, the Crested Drongo, is an iconic bird.

a genus comprising about 20 to 25 species covering India, SE Asia, Indian Ocean islands and parts of Africa. They became part of the Australian avifauna only about six million years ago.

The birds are jet black with a metallic sheen when the sun catches their plumage. They have fierce red eyes and long tail feathers curved into a swallow-tail. Their diet consists of insects, mostly taken on the wing, and we love to watch their aerobatic displays as they ‘sally forth’ from their perches high in the trees at the edge of our forest. Often they fly vertically up then swoop (almost plummet) down at speed.

They also hover over swarms of flying ants and cut through them to catch the insects. We can hear their beaks go ‘snap’ as they seize the prey. Cicadas and beetles are picked off leaves up in the foliage and the birds often fly around with a protesting cicada in their beaks.

Late in the afternoons they do ‘belly-flops’ on our dam.

We have four pairs nesting on our property that return to the same or nearby trees each year.

They usually lay two or three eggs in ‘twiggy’ nests on the exposed branches of tall trees.

When the chicks are out of the nests the little family groups sit together and carry on with their unique chatter and chortle interspersed with whistles and raucous calls. They also mimic the calls of other species, especially the Peaceful Dove and Rainbow Lorikeet. Every so often the parent birds race off to chase some other birds, such as Blue-faced Honeyeaters, out of their territory and more than occasionally there are very noisy inter-family quarrels.

Then, one day in late Summer, we do not hear them any more.

They have departed overnight.

Some years a single bird quietly stays behind. We do not know if it is an outcast, was somehow separated from the family group or the migratory instinct has not ‘kicked in’.

We always look forward to the Spangled Drongos return - they add character to the place.

Young birds are arriving everyday

During times of drought, birds will seek out any water they can find, be it streams, creeks or

our swimming pools. Alas, the modern glass swimming pool fence is sadly a merciless trap for many thirsty birds and this last couple of weeks has brought us plenty of patients. Consider offering birds an alternative source as they quickly become aware of water in bowls on your property - just top them up every day. This water source is best kept away from the pool.

Although little can be done to prevent window collisions from occurring, there is a new product called Ornilux Mikado glass.

The insulating glass is sheeting with a special ultraviolet (UV) reflective coating that is almost invisible to the human eye, but looks like a spider's web to birds.

Birds are able to see a broader spectrum of wavelengths than humans and can easily see the UV lines. The glass is claimed to reduce collisions by 76 per cent.

Breeding season is a wonderful yet heartbreaking time for us.

Birds fall out of nests quicker than we can catch them. We need all the help from you we can get.

Slow down at dawn and dusk;

be aware that if one roo crosses in front, more often than not, a second will follow. Bring hits in to us as the roos and possums might be female with their legacy hiding in pouches. Thank you for your diligence, kindness and love of our precious fauna.

Gardening Growing like weeds! Annie Wilson

I don't know about you, but every day I'm pulling handfuls of weeds from my veggie patch.

From various grasses, to oxalis, to cobblers pegs, there seems to have been a never-ending army of weeds marching into my garden all year.

Weeds spread in a number of different ways. Some run along or under the ground, others creep into garden beds, some are spread by humans and animals, and others have airborne seeds.

Weed seeds and bulbs can remain dormant in the ground, sometimes for years, until the conditions are right for their germination. Most weeds are introduced species, like lantana, that have escaped from gardens.

Without the usual native animals to control them, exotic species

can become environmental weeds in their new country.

The best way to control weeds is to break their cycle, and to remain vigilant. Removing weeds before they produce seed or fruit is most effective. A thick layer of mulch is also a good deterrent - just make sure it's clean, so you're not introducing more trouble! If you have a weed problem that's so bad that you need to use a herbicide, follow the safety directions carefully and use the lowest recommended concentration. Homemade herbicides - like vinegar, soap and salt mixtures - can be effective, but be careful to avoid a buildup of salt and acid in your soil.

Native Cordylines Helen Hepburn Our native forests have produced lots of worthwhile plants. A lovely one to consider for small gardens and rainforest gardens are cordylines, also known as Palm Lilies. There are eight species, and all should be considered. They grow best in filtered sun and make excellent ‘fillers’ as understorey plants.

My favourite is C. stricta which is also found naturally in our area. It grows rather slowly to become about 1m, has a lovely dense leafy top and, as an added bonus, pretty panicles of purple flowers followed by black berries. Some others are: C. petiolaris – has long arching stems and long leaf stalks and is very decorative.

C. manners-suttoniae - comes from Northern Queensland and eventually becomes huge (5m tall) so is better planted towards the back of a garden.

C. rubra is endemic to our area and grows 2m tall with pretty lilac flowers and red berries.

C. congesta grows 2m tall and has finely toothed leaf margins and has purple flowers and orange fruit.

C. cannifolia comes from Northern Queensland and is on the taller side with white flowers and red berries.

established, readily available from nurseries and plant markets and make a good show when mass planted in clumps or drifts. They are often available as tube stock from Landcare organisations. Propagation is easy by either seed or stem cuttings. Stem cuttings need the top of the plant with about 15cm of bare stem. If the soil is moist or wet, cuttings can be carefully poked into the ground where you want them to grow, and these should root in a few weeks.

Some of the smaller varieties such as stricta make good pot plants and can be brought indoors for short holidays.

Gardening Verrierdale garden opens for Quarry funds Cheryl and Bob Boyd are opening their much loved garden to the public this weekend, Saturday 5 and Sunday 6 October from 10am – 4.30pm at 13 Sudholz Rd, Verrierdale. All profits going to the No Blasted Quarry campaign to stop a mega-quarry from going ahead in the valley between Eumundi and Coolum Beach.

Nestled amongst a woodland of blackbutt , stringybark and tallowwood in Verrierdale, the Boyd’s garden has been described as one of Queensland’s most interesting gardens. Horticulturalist Cheryl creates exciting colour combinations, bold textural variations and has a wonderful sense of place in the forest that makes visitors want to stop for a while. There will be tea and food available and a monster raffle with wonderful prizes from Potanical Pots, Anne Everingham, Libby’s Aussie Wool, Noosa Nets and Bed Linen and Plants Direct.
