When I sped into the vets just after 5pm with my very sick cat and sobbing children, vet David turned back from his car, took my cat Ned inside, put her on the table gently and listened to her heart as it stopped. He then graciously waited while I wept, before showing me the paralysis tick. I’m very grateful for an act of kindness in my moment of desperation. Thanks also to mechanic Graham who patched the puncture in my tyre after I had gunned the car down our dirt road in a bid to save Ned. And to the good souls who rallied and understood how sad it is to lose a best pet friend. We also lost our guinea pig to our resident python last week – bit of a pet onslaught really. I guess that’s the reality that comes with living in the country.

Mother Nature is very beautiful, but every now and again she’s going to slap you in the face.

Usually, when I work on a Green I have a cat on the desk chair behind me, back to back.

This issue I’ve had to resort to pillows. It’s the first time in 12 years that I write alone.

 Nourish have had to close temporarily due to an emergency in Sydney.  A new Business Centre is opening in Eumundi.  Elfie at Nest has a new green tea room devoted to café pursuits.  Nic and Rob Makim are the new owners of Berkelouw café.  So far Cooroy State School has only had 40 preps enrol – which means it’s lost a whole class worth of kids.  ESS has had record numbers of enrolment for prep.  Pat Rafter’s old coach is giving lessons in Eumundi.  Dr Patti Slegers is back at the Eumundi Clinic  Kinky Freeman is coming to Joe’s in November.  If you have bikie tats and you meet two bikie mates at the pub for a beer, you can go to jail for six months.  We should have a local sausage festival and competition.  The smell of a dead horse fly attracts more horse flies.  Eumundi needs a monthly book swap.  Dan’s the new man at the Imperial.

The Eumundi Rural Fire Service Open Day Saturday 2 Nov, Napier Rd Assisting local residents with preparing a Bushfire Survival Plan.

The Fire Station will be open from 9am until 4pm to give locals an opportunity to seek advice from Fire Wardens, Experienced Firefighters and Community Educators.

Eumundi Live looking for volunteers Be part of the Eumundi Live Volunteer Corps whilst enjoying an afternoon of fun, fellowship and music. If you can give up one Sunday afternoon a month, have great people skills and love being part of a team, please join the crew. Computer Notes

I rarely make a fuss about viruses but this one really needs people to change their behaviour. This virus is called the Crypto virus, and if you get it, it steadily and silently encrypts all of your documents, pictures, spreadsheets, PDF and just about every other kind of file.

It also encrypts files on your backup drive and any shared folders on other computers you connect to. Once it has done its job, it makes itself known and demands between $300 to $50,000 for the decryption key. This is called Ransomware. Without this decryption key (password) it’s impossible to recover any document at all from your computer. Luckily, my client has a cloud backup which not only backs up to the internet every day, but keeps a copy of all versions of files for the past 30 days. By downloading all their files from the cloud backup as they were last Thursday, they are out of trouble. If they, like you at home and most businesses, only had a USB backup drive that did a daily backup they would have been out of luck, as it would have just backed up encrypted files. A cloud backup is now essential for everyone.

“Having Jackson with me also helps others to feel more comfortable with my seizures,” said Charlie.

He is also trained to walk beside Charlie’s wheelchair and help in many other practical ways. Each dog goes through many months of training to be able to work effectively in all public places and assist their person gain independence. The cost to raise and train each dog is $25,000. Patricia said they receive no government funding and rely on donations and grants to keep their program going. We will be following Charlie’s and Jackson’s progress in Eumundi Green and we’ll soon be able to bring you news of a Smart Pup in training to be placed in our community.

Councillor Rogerson update A total of 50 fantastic community projects across the Sunshine Coast have been awarded grants

by Council to support community activities and events. Sunshine Coast Riding For The Disabled Inc. is an equestrian facility for people with disabilities based at North Arm and they have been awarded $10,000 to contribute to the first stage of a significant project to develop, surface and fence two riding arenas.

Yandina and Districts Pony Club Inc. have been awarded $5,000 to contribute to the costs for drainage works to pony club grounds. The Eumundi Historical Foundation have been awarded $3,000 to contribute to the cost of promotion and delivery of an annual acquisition prize for sculpture. A heartfelt congratulations and thank you to all of these community organisations for the great work they do and for making our local area a great place to live.

Council recently installed a refurbished bus shelter outside the 110 Estate in Eumundi and we’ve already had feedback from the local bus driver that the school kids love their new shelter. I helped to coordinate this project as I’d received requests from the community and the bus operator to do something about providing a bus shelter at this location I’m glad Council stepped up to help make life a little easier for the school bus drivers and their passengers.

Remembrance Day at Eumundi

At 11am on 11 November 1918 the guns of the Western Front fell silent after more than four years continuous warfare. Since then it has become a tradition of allied nations to commemorate their war dead with an observation of silence at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month. Whilst this observance originally honoured the between 9 and 13 million dead from the mobilisation of over 70 million people with perhaps as many as one-third of the dead with no known grave, today the observance honours all who have served and suffered in any military or peace-keeping conflict.

Big thank you from Stringybark Cottage Thank you to our wonderful community for visiting our open garden in large numbers over the long weekend. As well as sharing the joy of gardening and of watching people happily catching up with friends over a cuppa, we were blown away by the $14,754 profit made over the two days. The funds raised from gate takings, raffle tickets, refreshments and plant sales has gone to the No Blasted Quarry campaign to oppose a development application before the courts next month for a mega quarry in the valley close by our property and many other residential properties in the area. The quarry is half way between Eumundi and Coolum as the crow flies and if they ever did open it up for truck access on Pryors Rd, Eumundi would be an accident waiting to happen. The magnificent amount raised was due in no small part to generous donors including: Botanico, Anne Everingham Jewellery, Libbys Aussie Wool, Julia Emblin, Noosa Nets and Bedlinen, Swingz and Thingz, Eclectic Style, Plants Direct, Gayle Enkleman, Eumundi Meats, Richies Bakery Eumundi, Peregian Butcher, Nurseries-Plants Direct, Big Leaf Nursery, Murphy and Nowland, Florabundance, Eplants, and Utopia Palms. Again, thank you one and all. Please do what you can to support Yandina Creek Progress Assn’s No Blasted Quarry campaign over the next few weeks. It is a hideous, huge quarry that is planned. It would destroy the beauty and tranquillity of a vast area.

Artist Amy Clarke on show There was a great show of support from the Art community and Eumundi community at the launch of Amy Clarke’s latest exhibition entitled Playing with the Landscape Noosa Regional Art Gallery.

There are 10 positions available and the successful applicants will join representatives of council, historical societies, heritage groups and associations, business, tourism and the community to help raise the profile of cultural heritage in the region. The Reference Group meets four times a year and assists in forming strategic priorities for expenditure of the Heritage Levy. Nominate to contribute to the region’s cultural heritage Nominations are being sought by 5pm Wednesday 13 November for community members who have a commitment to cultural heritage to join the Sunshine Coast Cultural Heritage Reference Group. Community Programs Portfolio Councillor Jenny McKay said the Sunshine Coast Cultural Heritage Reference Group provides strategic advice on preserving and accessing cultural heritage in the region. “As Chair of the Reference Group, I invite interested people with experience in the heritage sector, business, tourism or marketing to nominate for these important voluntary positions which are available for a period of up to two years, “ Cr McKay said.

Community News Open garden a great success Victoria Kane Geoff Rafter coaching the community

The No Blasted Quarry Campaign has been handed a boost from the Stringybark Cottage Open Garden held over the weekend of October 5 and 6. Cheryl and Bob Boyd of Verrierdale opened the gates of their much admired gardens to the public for the first time in four years to assist in raising funds for the plight. I can happily report they received $15,000 from the weekend. These events do not just happen on their own and

a special thanks goes to our sponsors and to the merry band of 30 volunteers who ensured the smooth operation of the event. The Yandina Ck Progress Assoc. would especially like to acknowledge the overwhelming generosity of Cheryl and Bob who unselfishly shared the private space of their beautiful gardens to assist the campaign.

It is the actions of individuals like Cheryl and Bob that makes our community such a great place to be.

Geoff Rafter is now tennis coaching on Sunrise Rd on a newly rebuilt synthetic court.

This is the tennis court that he and his brother Pat trained on for many years. The court is possibly Eumundi’s closest thing to hallowed “turf”, because as many people know Pat went on to become world number one and two-time US Open winner, and is the current Davis Cup Captain.

Schools and Community Kids An amazing year of sports Eumundi Green State Schooler Joel Kerr has had some pretty amazing sporting acheivements so far this year. Joel was selected in Sunshine Coast Regional Schoolboys Rugby after first making the district team.

The state titles were held in Goondiwindi in August. Joel played with fellow Eumundi resident Evan Mclean who was the captain for this squad and led by example. Both boys have played for The Mighty Eumundi Dragons Rugby Club which Joel is still playing for at club level.

Joel was called into the Sunshine Coast Regional Softball team to compete in the 3 day state titles in Ipswich. The team won all their games but missed out on the grand final.

In cricket Joel represented Sunshine Coast in the Ian Healy Cup in Brisbane and received the best bowler award. Joel Bowled 28 overs for 31 runs taking 10 wickets and 12 maiden overs. He has been selected to represent the Coast Schoolboys cricket after a 2 day trial at Maroochydore.

Joel says he owes a great deal of thanks to The Eumundi Dragons Rugby Club, Eumundi State School P&C and the Yandina Cricket Club for their support. No doubt his dedicated chauffeurs (read parents) deserve some credit too.

Update from Masig Island Gee Wester

I am currently teaching on a tiny little island in the Torres Strait called Masig Island (also known as Yorke Island). The island is 2.7km long and 800m wide at its widest part. It is surrounded by coral reef and the clearest waters you can imagine. It is a very peaceful place, punctuated only by the thud of falling coconuts. Next year I will be returning to my position at Eumundi State School. I am very excited to be seeing all those familiar faces again and have a whole swag of new songs and dances to teach the kids! (and the staff!). I thought you might be interested to know about a group of kitesurfers that recently sailed onto Masig Island. Their mission was to raise awareness and to support those affected by breast cancer. They came all the way from the tip of Australia at Seisia and sailed to Papua New Guinea stopping off at little islands along the way. This was also to raise money for the Glen McGrath Foundation. Our entire school - 53 kids! - waited patiently on the beach to greet them as they sailed in on bright pink kitesurfing boards. Apart from the distances involved, this took a lot of courage as the waters around here have very healthy populations of hammerhead and tiger sharks, not to mention the crocodiles closer to the mainland!

As our own school population at Eumundi has recently experienced the impact of breast cancer amongst staff and parents alike, I thought you might like to know that, although we are very far away, we all send our love and support. Best wishes and see you next year!

Good Shepherd Lutheran College (GSLC) welcomed home three teams of students who represented Queensland at the Asia Pacific Finals of the Tournament of Minds (TOM) at the Australian National University in Canberra recently. Two of the three GSLC teams came home with Tournament Honours. The aim of the TOM competition is to enhance potential by developing diverse skills, enterprise, time management and the discipline to work collaboratively within a challenging and competitive environment.

ECCO Fifth Annual General Meeting

Designer Jen Hayward of the label Madzara, has been a Saturday staple at Original Eumundi Markets for a while now, in part because her fun skirts and dresses are coveted by many a local. Jen sews her timeless designs in a sunlit studio workshop in Kin Kin. Eumundi Green asked her to give a little insight into her craft.

How did Madzara come about? Inspired by being different, I developed an early interest in sewing and have been making clothes for myself and friends for many years. After completing a Certificate in Fashion Design, it gave me pattern making skills which led me to create a range of clothing to sell at the Eumundi Markets.

Where do you find your inspiration? My inspiration comes from the fabrics that I collect. I am drawn to colour and quirkiness! I use cotton recycled fabrics gathered from various sources ranging from modern to vintage.

Do you still enjoy sewing? I just love sewing. I would love to sew more if I could. Sewing and creating from home affords me a lifestyle to balance my busy home life with my husband and two daughters.

What do you like about having a stall at the markets? I thrive on customers who come in and love my clothes as much as I do. Of course there is always the social side - being with my market family and all the creative energy.

The name for your label comes from your daughters. Are they involved in Madzara? Maddy and Zara, my daughters, have been involved in my business from day one. They help me run my stall each week as well as offering honest feedback during the week with some of my creations.

What's your latest spring range like? My latest design is the Scarlet dress - a new spring/summer mid length dress which is extremely flattering to all body shapes.

Developing a parking plan ECCO’s board is assisting Council develop a parking plan for Eumundi.

For years parking has been a hot issue for residents, businesses and visitors as we welcome valued visitors.

It’s what makes our town great and sometimes gives us a shared headache. More car parks have been created but more improvements are called for. Fifty businesses have completed the survey and the results will be summarised and reviewed before handing on to Council.

Last week these welcome flags highlighting the essence of Eumundi were installed in a high spot opposite the Albert St entrance to the bottom car park to maximise sighting by arriving and departing visitors. The installation of the poles is an important strategy of ECCO’s Experience Eumundi marketing plan designed to grow the number of visitors and to lengthen their stay and increase their spend. Sunshine Coast Council made a welcome contribution towards the cost of the poles project.

On reading about the death of Tom Clancy recently I got on a wave of nostalgia. Just a mention of his name takes me off-watch to the junior sailors mess of one of our R.A.N. Submarines, and to the chorused groans as someone would suggest that we should watch The Hunt for Red October...AGAIN! I don’t think there would be a submariner alive – current or ex - who hasn’t read the book or seen the subsequent movie that kicked off Clancy’s career as possibly the best selling techno-thriller writer of all time. Some say he invented the genre. Seventeen bestsellers and with a gazillion books in print he was hard to ignore. His popularity was so great his name became a global brand to be licensed and applied to ghost written novels, and computer games.

His books are a treasure trove of technical and geo-political detail, painstakingly researched, all linked together by day swallowing storytelling. The book snob that lurks in me finds it painful to admit, but once you get cracking, his novels are impossible to put down.

Ah the joys of the e-book – I can pretend I’m intensely reading Proust. Just don’t look in my bookshelf at home. Reading about, or watching submarines getting hunted and torpedoed is perhaps an odd choice of entertainment for a submarine crew at depth (the German movie Das Boot was a perennial favorite). So I’ll leave it to Tom Clancy for the final word: “The difference between fiction and reality? Fiction has to make sense.”

Art news in brief Tina Cooper is launching a new exhibition entitled Cornucopia in her art space at the rear of her Gallery in Eumundi open from Saturday 9 November until 1 March 2014.

Paintings by local artist Wendy Epp are on display at Cooroy’s Butter Factory Arts Centre until 16 November. They are the record of an ordinary person’s musings on the effects of the passing of time. Wendy’s layering and text in painting workshop will be held on Friday 15 November from 10am –12pm. Bookings essential by 14 November.

Celebrate Food Persian pomegranate Sandy Bradley

One of the oldest known fruits, the lovely Pomegranate (Punica granatum), a native plant of Persia is making a comeback. There have been many new revelations and research findings on this complex fruit. The pomegranate is a nutrient dense food source rich in phytochemical compounds. Pomegranates contain high levels of flavonoids and polyphenols, potent antioxidants allegedly offering protection against heart disease and cancer. A glass of pomegranate juice is said to have more antioxidants than red

wine, green tea, blueberries or cranberries. They are delicious as a fruit and are used heavily in Middle Eastern cooking. I use pomegranate molasses with plain vinaigrette as a salad dressing and always keep a bottle handy in the larder. Here are a couple of recipes to try out. Both quick, easy to prepare and delicious. Pomegranates are in season now.

Antioxidant Rich Smoothie

Ingredients: • 8 cups organic baby spinach • 1 cup pomegranate juice • 1 cup blueberries, fresh (or frozen) • 1 cup strawberries, fresh (or frozen) • 8 dates, cut in half • 2 tablespoons flaxseeds, ground • 1/2 avocado, optional Blend together!

This is delicious and very healthy.

Moroccan Lamb Salad with Israeli Couscous and Pomegranate

Ingredients • 500g lamb fillet (or 2 loins) • 3 tblsp Gourmet Garden moroccan seasoning • 3 tblsp olive oil • 250g pack of Israeli couscous (pearl) • 1 can chick peas • 400g pumpkin cubed • 1/2 red capsicum, roughly chopped • 1/2 red onion, thinly sliced • 4 cloves garlic • 1 tblsp basil • 1 tblsp oregano Serve with: • 1/2 pomegranate • 1 cup rocket • Greek yoghurt

Method Chop up the pumpkin, onion and capsicum. Place in bowl and toss with garlic, basil, oregano and 2 tblsps olive oil.

Place in baking tray in hot oven and cook for about 10 – 15 mins.

Prepare couscous according to packet instructions.

Rub lamb fillet with the moroccan seasoning and 1 tblsp olive oil. Heat a non-stick pan and sear lamb fillets all over. Cook till done to your liking. See tips below for times.

Rest for 2 minutes.

Mix together the couscous, roasted vegetables and drained can of chick peas.

Add dressing and stir.

Add pomegranate seeds, reserving some for garnish.

Plate the couscous, add rocket and sliced lamb, then top with Greek yoghurt and pomegranate seeds.

Dressing: • 3 tblsp vinaigrette • 3 tblsp pomegranate molasses

Tip: Lamb Test - rare: soft when pressed, medium: springy and well done: firm

Our thoughts this week lie with our wildlife further south greatly affected by the devastating fires we are witnessing in NSW. There are great fears wildlife will suffer dramatic losses from the NSW bushfires, with growing

numbers of possums, koalas and gliders being found with burns and smoke inhalation. It was not clear how many animals had been killed due to such large areas being burned, but tens of thousands are likely to be affected. Birds are able to escape a fire front, but arboreal animals will be badly affected and while some reptiles might be able to dig down to survive, they will find most of their food gone after the fire. Endangered species of gliders and the giant dragonfly will suffer very serious losses. There was also particular concern for koalas, which are unable to move quickly from trees once a fire is closing in.

If you are in a situation where you discover a burnt or fireeffected animal, loosely wrap in a towel and put into a box for their own safety and bring to us here at the centre. Despite the shortage of food given the drought, Gil says we shouldn’t leave food out. She explained that when birds are hungry they eat anything they can find and this can damage their beaks/ mouthparts - which can lead to eating problems in the future.

Also they tend to eat stuff that may damage their guts, so generally we should only leave out water and leave them to find their natural food.

If you would like to assist with the situation in NSW, Petbarn is running an appeal in conjunction with the RSPCA to assist rescue and recovery efforts aimed at wildlife, pets and livestock. You can donate to this appeal at all Petbarn stores. The RSPCA is also appealing for online donations to help RSPCA inspectors help animals affected by the bushfires.

Life on a better ridge - beautiful bamboo Claudette Betteridge noise as the canes gently bump their neighbours, and that's just while it's growing.

Don't get me started about the evocative sounds that echo from a bamboo wind chime, flute or pan pipes. I could go on about these etheric wonders for hours, but instead will suffice to tell you how we use nature's largest grass here on the better ridge.

I can't tell you how much I love bamboo. Its inherent strength and versatility win me over every time. Just thinking about it now puts me in a balmy, tropical mood. The rustling sound the leaves make in the slightest breeze, the deep knocking

To begin with there are the obvious uses - stakes and frames for young plants to climb up, teepees for children to play in, scarecrow cross-sections, poles to attach shade cloth to for temporary shade for plants or chickens, flag poles and clothes hanging rails, not to mention erosion control and soil stabilization, but at the moment we are using our recent harvest to make lattice privacy screens.

We use a pole saw to cut the outermost stalks in our clump

and gather up the haul. From there we have an excellent system involving two adults and at least one child, a block of wood, a machete or heavy meat cleaver and pair of secateurs.

Once we have decided where the lattice is to go, we measure the lengths of poles that are required and cut a 'yard-stick'.

This is placed on the ground in front of the chopping block and each stalk is measured against this and cut to length. Once this happens the second adult uses the secateurs to remove the leafy stems. For lattice and trellises we leave an inch or two of stems attached to the pole as they are great holds for climbing tendrils to attach to and make easy brackets on which to place lattice cross members. The child (or children if they are cooperating) then take each pole in turn and grade it according to thickness and

length and create neat stacks, or alternatively play stick-fighting ninjas, javelin throwing and/or teepee club-house building!

When the adults are allowed access to the piles again we lay out the lattice cross sections on the ground and secure them with wire, twine, home made rope, or in a pinch, cable ties.

Once the lattice is securely joined we drive star pickets into the area we want to fence and attach the screen to it. This saves having to try and hammer the bamboo directly into the ground (which, just for the record, usually ends up splitting one or both ends of the pole). Then hey presto – you have a great screen ready for growing creepers on or, if you have made the poles close enough together, ready for instant privacy (great for when you are building a house and have an outside shower!).

Forgotten walking tracks Michael Whitty Since talking to people about Stage One of the Eumundi – Cooroy Rail Trail, many people have commented to me about the lack of walking or bike riding tracks available around Eumundi.

There is a very interesting sealed walking/bicycle path that is worth discovering. Living on the north side of town, I enjoy bike riding with my daughter along a track that begins on Memorial Dr, winds its way beneath the Brisbane Motorway north bound off ramp, around and up and over the motorway, then back down underneath the West Wednesday 30 October 2013

Eumundi Rd before terminating at Balsam Road near the historic Eumundi Saleyards. From this point walkers can stroll that area of the historic Eumundi Saleyards and cemetery. From the tennis court area, this walk is completely safe and free of traffic.

I know that there are others before me that have tried establishing a network of walking tracks in the area, but this infrastructure makes an excellent cornerstone from which to expand future recreation facilities. The old Butter Factory

precinct will soon be up for sale and perhaps the opportunity is going to appear for the Eumundi Rail Trail Committee (a sub-committee of the Eumundi Historical Assoc.) to begin negotiations for Stage One of the Eumundi – Cooroy Rail Trail.

This would allow people to walk from the market area, through the Noosa Rd underpass and right around to Elizabeth St. Considerable money must have been invested into this fine walking track by planners back in the late 90’s and it is a shame to not see it being utilised.

Mosquitoes – an ancient enemy Kon Hepers Scientists recently examined the fossilised body of a mosquito found in a Montana riverbed that dated 40 million years. They could clearly determine that its abdomen contained vestiges of blood. Mosquitoes have been plaguing man and beast for a long time. They’re found in their billions from Arctic tundra to equatorial rainforest. There are about 3500 species worldwide, with about 300 species in Australia.

Fortunately only a very few of them “attack” humans.

They’re probably the most dangerous creature on earth excluding microbes. According to WHO figures, in 2011 over 200 million people were infected by mosquito-borne malaria resulting in over 660,000 deaths.

That’s from malaria alone! Here in Australia the malaria parasite is carried by a specific mosquito called Anopheles farauti (only the genus Anopheles carries malaria) but so far it exists only along our extreme northern coastline although it is wide-spread in New Guinea. However, with a warming climate and increased tourism, it will inevitably spread south.

A greater worry to us is another mosquito species, Aedes aegypti,

which is the prime vector for spreading dengue fever. (A vector is any animal or insect capable of spreading a disease.) This insect also requires tropical conditions to breed but again, with warming climate, we are witnessing its spread southward, already reaching Townsville and certain to arrive in our area in the near future. Dengue fever is generally not fatal but extremely nasty. The old-timers called it “breakbone” and I can personally vouch for the accuracy of that name. While working in Fiji I was infected and the best way to describe the symptoms is that for the first week or so it felt like my body was being put through a crusher while someone was beating my head with a baseball bat and pouring hot water on me. That subsided to general weakness and aching bones - which lasted for weeks.

Here on the Sunshine Coast the main vector is a closely related species called Ochlerotatus notoscriptus which breeds in pools and tree hollows in the bush but also in any still water standing around our properties.

This mosquito bites by day and night and is the carrier of Ross River and Barmah Forest viruses

and also possibly Encephalitis and heartworm in dogs.

There is also the the Common House Brown, or Culex quinquefasciatus, found in every continent between latitudes 36 degrees north and south (basically all over Australia except the extreme south). This is the one that annoys us in the house but is not a vector for any disease.

The life-cycle of mosquitoes is familiar to all of us. Eggs are laid in still water, hatch out into “wrigglers”, then change into pupae (still in the water) and finally emerge as the winged insect. Females immediately take off in search of blood from mammal, bird or even reptile, while males seek out nectar or other plant juices. Why then do the females go out hunting blood? They actually require a protein hit to allow their own eggs to develop. From a distance of 15m they detect (mainly) an increase in carbon dioxide level from exhalation, but also other odours such as perspiration, to alert them to a potential blood meal. Although their air-speed is only about 1.5 to 2 kph, their wings beat at an astonishing 300 to 600 times per second, yes, per

second. That whining noise is not intended to annoy us (although it does) but is made to allow males and females to identify one another. And that buzz/whine is not made by the wings flapping, but by a small organ at the wing base called a stridulatory organ which has two parts rubbing against each other, generating the sound. Crickets and cicadas also stridulate.

Now a new threat has appeared called Asian Tiger Aedes albopictus.

Wide-spread in Asia, including Bali, it carries a fever similar to Dengue called Chikungunya. It has been found on the Torres Strait islands and needs tropical/ subtropical conditions so could spread as far south as Tasmania.

Even though there are numerous still-water sources in our area it is in everyone’s interest to disrupt mosquitoes’ breeding cycle by ensuring that no water containers of any description are standing around. If you have birdbaths or water containers around your property, make sure you change the water daily.



Eumundi Abroad American Roadtrip Clytie Glass John and I are travelling in a 27ft RV (motor home) from LA to Philadelphia. So far we have followed Route 66 through California, Arizona, Utah, New Mexico, Texas, Kansas and Oklahoma, and we are currently in St Louis, Missouri.

in these places - a lesson to be learned by some of our coastal neighbours who do nothing but complain about the presence of people in caravans.

The scenery since we crossed into Arizona has been wonderful and people so very helpful and friendly. As all national parks were closed we detoured to see Monument Valley and are so glad we did. It has to be seen to be believed and makes a great addition to any bucket list. We met an Indian of the Dineh tribe, we call them Navajo but he assured us that was the white man's name (meaning long knife), and not accurate.

As we are self contained we've been overnighting in service stations and shopping centre car parks along with many other RV travellers. We are welcome to stay

Over here, our comfort is the number one consideration as people realise just how much money we put into the community. We also detoured to Dallas where we attended the Texas State Fair, sadly it was raining but we still enjoyed the many exhibits. We also visited Fort Worth stockyards where they drive Texas longhorns up the road twice a day which is quite a sight. It's been lovely watching the changes in the colour of leaves as we move further north east.

Today the trees were every colour from green to red to orange to yellow. Over the next couple of weeks it will only get prettier.
