I have absolutely no idea how it came to be November. I’m kinda still in June. The thought that another year is nearing its end is both exciting and terrifying. Eumundi is certainly gearing up for a fun summer. Lots of labours of love from incredible locals who are putting their hearts into creating some amazing events for us. This month Eumundi is all about the music. Along with a great line up at Joe’s and Bo Ho, we also have Elixir and Louise King in concert, our beloved Full Moon Dance and the very first Eumundi Live event. Word retraction Last issue we printed a Word on the street comment that so far Cooroy State School had 40 preps enrol, therefore a class less of enrolments. Principal Jennifer Easey has since informed us that this is not the case. "Cooroy State School's 2014 prep enrolments are consistent with previous years' numbers. Just a couple of follow-ups from previous articles today. Firstly, those running Windows 8 may know that the latest update, Windows 8.1, was released last month. If you are on a mobile WiFi connection you should be careful – the update is over 3GB in size and can blow your quota. Check your usage before starting the download. The Cryptolocker ransomware virus I talked about last edition is even more prevalent – I’ve dealt with two more cases since then.There is a way you can protect yourself from the current incarnation of the virus though. An enterprising programmer has released a simple to use tool which stops the virus from being able to run even if it manages to get on your PC. Community News Councillor Robertson update ECCO. I recently attended the Eumundi Combined Community Organisation (ECCO) Annual General Meeting (AGM) with Cr Greg Rogerson and we would both like to congratulate the ECCO Board for their commitment and significant contribution to the Eumundi and District local communities. It was great to see a number of new initiatives in this year’s list of achievements as well as the very important treasurer’s report which highlighted the organisation is in a strong financial position. We would like to thank the Board for their efforts and successes in what has been a challenging 12 months and wish them all the best for the coming year. Fire and storm season meeting. At the request of some concerned Ninderry residents a meeting was held at Esma Armstrong’s home to discuss fire and emergency evacuation matters in the area. Given that some residences have only one access road in and out of the suburb, Council has agreed to work closely with the Queensland Fire and Rescue Service, the local rural fire brigades and

the community in general to help formalise any "location specific" fire and emergency evacuation procedures for those communities.

Yandina Historic Association. It was a privilege to attend the 10th birthday of the Yandina Historic House. This event was a celebration of the historic house with wonderful displays of photos and arts and crafts. I was pleased to be able to provide a new table and chair setting to commemorate the 10th birthday. It was also great to see the opening of the museum shed at the back of the house with its large display of tools and equipment. Congratulations to the organisers for a great birthday event.

A Sunshine Coast spokesperson has informed Eumundi Green that for most library users, the change going forward for library services will mean people will now need two library cards (membership at two library services) if they are interested in borrowing from library services in both the Sunshine Coast (Cooroy) and the other Noosa Local Government Areas (Tewantin).

Your Say Inger’s farewell from Tallgum

Eumundi Green vollie Inger (second from left) recently had a goodbye party. She’s bidding Eumundi goodbye and moving all the way to … Cooroy. Lucky for the Green Inger will still be part of the Green collating team.

An angel appeared Early on Tuesday morning, our much-loved 11 year old golden retriever, Oliver, collapsed in our front yard. It was shocking; he had always appeared the picture of good health. We rushed him to our local vet (thank you Ben for meeting us at 6 am), but from then on the news was never reassuring. By Thursday lunchtime we had the worst possible diagnosis; Oliver had liver cancer, he was a very sick dog indeed with little chance of recovery. Since we had always wanted to do

Dawn from Walkabout Vet arrived in the evening. Caring and unhurried, she talked us gently through what was to occur, answered all our questions, and stayed with us for several hours until it was all over. She even had the foresight to bring some treats along, thus blessing us with the last sight of a wagging tail and enthusiastic eating. Oliver’s departure was dignified and painless, thanks entirely to Dawn’s efforts. For us it was (and still is) a painful and devastating experience, somewhat relieved by this gentle, warm and so very kind lady. Thank you, Dawn. Eumundi Markets Market designers on show A large crowd of locals and Brisbanites turned out for the Original Eumundi Market's Passion For Fashion parade last Saturday. General Manager of Eumundi Markets Peter Homan said the day, "focused on the unique designs of the many talented artisans in the market community. Eumundi Markets is a wonderful platform for both established and emerging designers, and Passion for Fashion is our chance to celebrate the talent and skill here in our community.” The summer collections showed recurring themes of earthy colours, rich textures, and fun, ethnic influences from designers such as Marmilade, Lime Zest, Abby Rose Bikinis, Betiko, Bellicious, Madzara, Fabrigami, Truessence, Knickerbocker Bloom, Butterscotch Castle and Boom Shankar. Congratulations Lorenzo – Noosa Artisan Upcycle You can find Lorenzo’s magical creations, largely upcycled jewellery and home wares from cutlery and other discarded items, at his Wednesday stall on the top terrace opposite the Post Office. Whilst Lorenzo has been at the markets just a couple of years he grew up with a love of creating jewellery. Lorenzo shared, “I’ve always loved cooking and playing around with spoons and shaping jewellery is just a natural extension of sharing the love and connecting with people.” The evidence of the love is everywhere in his stall with his home made lazy susan display of wonderful jewellery items lovingly polished, inviting visitors in to inspect displays close up, to see him crafting new items and sharing his happiness with visitors at being part of the markets. Lorenzo says that a market is like a theatre performance as stall holders and supporters come to the stage and play out a role complete with comradeship, colour and creative opportunity to form a market and then it closes until the next performance day, another market day!

Lorenzo is still smiling after receiving his Eumundi Business Award recently. “I was extremely moved and surprised,” he said.

Schools and Community Kids ESS exceptional maths results

What I love: A wonderful wet world Jessica Creevey, Year 4, Ignite English, Eumundi State School Splash! Every Thursday, as soon as I hit the water I feel refreshed after a long, hot day at school. Everyone is splashing water all around, having the time of their life. Quickly, I slide on my goggles and flippers and immerse myself in the wonderful place called The Eumundi Pool!

On Wednesday 30 October, year 6 and 7 students from Eumundi State School (ESS) competed in the annual Sunshine Coast Maths Tournament at the Lake Kawana Community Centre. There were over 400 students participating from both state and private schools, covering the entire region from Pomona to Caloundra. Lachie achieved a perfect score of 10 out of 10 in the Year 7 individual event. In the overall team event our Year 7 students placed 3rd with a score of 30 out of 45. The year 6 students did Eumundi proud with exceptional results in all events. Reid scored 10 out of 10 in the individual competition and our year 6 students placed 2nd overall in the individual event. They also placed 2nd in both the team and relay events. At the end of the day ESS year 6 placed 2nd overall with a total of 136 points, pipped at the post by Sunshine Coast Grammar School.

Helpful teachers have taught me how to be a confident and competent swimmer over the past four years. Whether I’m there for my lessons or just splashing around with my friends, I’m always having fun. On days that are closest to the holidays, we do funny and crazy strokes in our lessons, like breaststroke freestyle, which is breast stroke kick with freestyle arms. Now doesn’t that sound crazy? It is also fantastic when we play the underwater race. Competitions between Junior Squad and Mini Squad don’t often happen, but when they do they are competitive and fun. I also go to the pool on the holidays and weekends with my friends. We play games such as Marco Polo and Sharks and Mermaids for hours. Sometimes we just sit underwater or wave at each other. Each Thursday after my lessons, I swim around in the shallow area and play with friends until I am as cold as ice. All this splashing, racing and diving works up an appetite, so once I’ve changed into some warm and toasty clothes I gobble up a scrumptious treat! What more would I want to do? Jump back in and swim again!

Benang Duncan Sayers Benang by Kim Scott is a horrible book - which is precisely why you must read it. Its horror in subject matter - the stripping away of identity via the state-sanctioned breeding-out of the Aboriginal Race – is countered by Scott’s superb writing. To read this book is an education, particularly for those who are blinkered to the violence and dispossession in Australia’s colonial history, either via denial or a onesided history syllabus.

Harley, a man of mixed Nyoongar and English heritage, floats in a cultural margin attempting to reconcile his family history. Harley’s grandfather Ernest Solomon Scat was an enthusiastic enactor of the policies promoted and pursued by the West Australian Chief Protector of Aborigines A. O. Neville, appointed between 1915 and 1936. Aborigines of full descent – thought to be nearing extinction - were to be permanently segregated to die off as a race. Those of part descent were to be separated from their full-blood relations, eventually to be absorbed into white society through their labour and intermarriage, so long as there was no “throwback” of course. In retirement the non-fictional Chief Protector A. O. Neville wrote the book Australia’s Coloured Minority: Its Place In The Community, published in 1947. In it he illustrates his view that the assimilation of full and part descent Aboriginal people can only be achieved by “breeding out the colour”. These ideas manifested as policy and legislation for the WA Dept of Aborigines and Fisheries and gave lonely, white men such as Ernest the excuse they needed to head out to the new settlements to divide and breed, leaving an abusive trail of destruction. The actions of men such as Ernest were breathtaking in their perverse audacity, a reality driven home with force as Scott intersperses the fiction with raw quotes from documents and letters found researching his own mixed race heritage. Whilst wrapped in fiction, this book is a history lesson. Scott treads carefully between those that would seek to dilute negative aspects of our colonial past as debated in Australia’s History Wars, and that of assuming authority to write on behalf of a mythical homogenized Aboriginal population. As such, he writes a personal story of one man discovering his past, whilst giving weight to the broader context with historical detail. He allows the factual artifacts in the novel to stand apart for examination despite their enormous offence. He leaves no room for denial. Benang is difficult. It is easier to bury one’s head in the sand and pretend there is no need for such a book to exist. This is my second reading of Benang and I am still coming to terms with the complexities – perhaps I never will. However I believe this is a vitally important book to commit time to, if only to find empathy that goes beyond the important first step of the 2007 apology to the stolen generation.

History is a conversation requiring two sides and Benang has helped plug some of the gaps in my Australian history education of the 1980’s. Of course history cannot be rewound but consider the Freidrich Hegel quote that goes something like: “The only thing we learn from history is that we learn nothing from history.” Perhaps the problem is that we only learn about the bits that keep our worldview comfortably propped up. Benang will make you uncomfortable but you will certainly learn a great deal more about the puzzle that is humanity. Please read it at least twice.

The November-December season of Laugh Out Loud – Son of Up Eumundi has begun production. 2013 has been a political year like no other and the jokes have almost written themselves, but Laugh Out Loud isn’t just about politics, it's a big bag of laughs and our new Musical Director, Andrew O’Connor, has masterminded the settings for the original songs. There’s been a noticeable increase in the number of locals attending the Indee over the past year and (according to their feedback) they’re more than pleasantly surprised. Over the past two decades we’ve seen the local numbers grow slowly. The bulk of audiences have come from outside our area, which means that in all our full house seasons under 10 per cent were locals. Sadly we still find an occasional resident who has no idea about the active theatre in town!

Le Grand Aioli

When I first arrived in Australia, I was so pleased to discover that this sauce had travelled so far from my province of southeastern France... but something was missing. Aioli is not just a sauce it is an entire meal. In my memory, it's eaten for Sunday lunch in the garden, around a table of friends and family, where we would sit for hours, drinking rosé, and putting the world to rights. Aioli is a garlic mayonnaise made of garlic, egg, lemon juice, and olive oil. In Provence, aioli (or more formally, Le Grand Aioli) also designates a complete dish consisting of various boiled vegetables; usually carrots, potatoes, and green beans, boiled fish; normally salt cod, and boiled eggs, served with the sauce. The traditional method is to use a mortar and pestle, which gives the sauce its creamy texture. The technique described below comes from J.B. Reboul's classic cookbook, La Cuisiniere Provencale, published in 1897 and widely considered to be the bible of Provencal cooking. The Components for 8 servings • 4 to 8 eggs • 0.5kg green beans, topped and tailed • 1 large head cauliflower, cut into large florets • 0.6kg baby carrots, peeled—if baby carrots are not available, cut large carrots on the diagonal into long batonettes • 0.5kg small new potatoes, scrubbed • 8 small or 4 medium beets • 1.5kg of Cod or other mild white fish, cut into 100g portions • Crusty French bread Preparing the Components Place the eggs in a small sauce pan and boil for 10min. Refresh under cold water. Peel and halve. Trim the beet greens so only a half inch or so of the stems remain. Leave the root intact. Scrub the beets. Place in a baking dish and add a splash of water. Cover with foil and bake at 180° for 45 min to an hour until tender. Cool, then trim and peel. Cut into halves. The remaining vegetables should be cooked in boiling salted water until just tender. Remove from water and spread on towels to cool. Typically the vegetables are served at room temperature or still slightly warm. The green beans will take 5 to 8 min, the cauliflower about 4 to 8 min, the carrots 12 to 20 min — depending on their size and age, and the new potatoes will take 15 to 20 minutes. If you like, halve the new potatoes when cool enough to handle. To prepare the fish, rub each fillet lightly with oil and season. Arrange in an oiled baking dish, add a splash of water (literally a splash—not even be enough to cover the dish bottom) and cover tightly with foil. Transfer to a preheated 180° oven and bake for about 10 minutes until just cooked. Do not overcook - remember that the fish will continue to cook when removed from the oven. To serve Arrange fish, vegetables and eggs on large platters. Place several bowls of the aïoli sauce on the table. Everyone takes what they want on their plate and adds the sauce. A good baguette with this dish and you’re ready for a feast! If a guest finds the aïoli too garlicky, give him or her a glass of cognac in the middle of the meal. It does wonders.

Ingredients • 2 garlic cloves per person • olive oil • 1 egg yolk per person • water • salt to taste Method Take two peeled garlic cloves (per person) and place in a mortar. Reduce to a paste with a pestle; add a pinch of salt, an egg yolk and pour in the oil in a thin thread while turning with the pestle. Take care to add the oil very slowly and, during this time, never stop turning; you should obtain a think pommade. After having added about three or four tablespoons of oil, add the juice of a lemon and a teaspoon of tepid water, continue to add oil little by little and, when the

pommade again becomes too thick, add another few drops of water, without which it falls apart, so to speak, the oil separating itself from the rest. If, despite all precautions, this accident should occur, one must remove everything from the mortar, put into it another egg yolk, a few drops of lemon juice and, little by little, spoonful by spoonful, add the unsuccessful aioli while turning the pestle constantly. This one calls "reinstating the aioli" (relever l'aioli). An aioli for seven to eight persons will absorb over two cups of oil. In his similarly classic book, Simple French Food, Richard Olney recommends toning down the recipe for non-Provencal palates unaccustomed to such a heavy dose of garlic. He suggests four cloves of garlic for an aioli serving 8 people. He also recommends starting with two egg yolks before starting to add the oil.

Health and Lifestyle Urban pop-up patch Assisi Chant

Last week in Melbourne I stumbled upon a gorgeous community garden, smack bang in the middle of the city. Now when I say smack bang, I really mean smack bang, right in the

centre - on the rooftop of the Federation Square car park. Although the gardens weren't open to the public at the time I was there, I was lucky enough to be having a sticky beak through

the fence when a lovely couple came along to water their patch and invited me in. Not only did I delight in the plethora of photographic subjects, but enjoyed learning how the city folk bring the outdoors, gardening and fresh produce into their lives. All of the raised beds had quaint stenciled signs on them, indicating their owners, and I was thrilled to recognize the name of the restaurant I had just eaten in â&#x20AC;&#x201C; no wonder their food had tasted so fresh! It sure limited the food miles I contributed to that day. My hosts Roy and Lisa (pictured) were retired school teachers living in the city centre, however like many city dwellers, their high rise, balcony-less lifestyle didn't allow for much more than a pot of herbs on a windowsill. Although us hinterland folk would just about choke at the price, residents of the CBD pay $25 a week to use the facilities and become a part of the community garden. This raised quite a bit of discussion amongst us, but was put neatly

into perspective when the price differences between apartments with balconies or gardens was compared to those without, and the cost of buying fresh herbs and greens at the supermarket each week was factored in. There were other added benefits too, like getting an extra raised bed if you were prepared to water the communal gardens and other peopleâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s plots, the sense of community that grows out of meeting those who share similar interests and ideals, not to mention the perfect positioning of the patch, practically on the banks of the Yarra, making it an ideal party location for fireworks and cultural celebrations. Spring-cleaning doesn’t just relate to our homes and closets, it’s equally as valuable in the garden. Our tropical garden area was becoming a little over run and some of the beds were falling apart, so it was time for a spring clean. The excess leafy matter was cut off and thrown in the adjoining chicken pen for the girls to pick on, and any remaining tubers and roots were dug up. Some of these we used for meals, some went into our "worming mix" for the chickens and the rest was composted.

New garden beds were formed up with sleepers and our attention then turned to the soil. If we want to grow nutritious herbs and veggies, we need to provide the foundations for this in our soil. One of the greatest things we can do to ensure this outcome is to understand what’s in our gardens from the beginning. A simple DIY pH test can tell you whether you have any problems with acidity or alkalinity, but there are other things to consider. Things such as having a heavy clay base

or excessively sandy soil will require different specialized treatments, but in each case the addition of organic matter will help immeasurably. Even if we buy in commercial or "premium" garden soils, there is a lot we can do to enhance what’s already there. Loads of composted matter is really important to add nutrients and stop the soil from clumping together and repelling water. Worm castings help make the soil light and fluffy, with the added advantage of providing a slow-release fertilizer and beneficial micro-organisms. Liquid "worm pee" will also provide these micro-organisms and fertilizers, while things like Blood and Bone or Dynamic Lifter add other nutrients to the soil, but often we still need more. If we want super healthgiving veggies on our plate we need the super health-giving factors in our soil to begin with. Unfortunately Australia’s soil is quite poor in many minerals, such as magnesium, zinc, selenium, nitrogen and potassium (all of which are very important for cell and tissue

health), and these need to be added in the right quantities. A local Yandina-based company, Nutri Tech, produces a great product called ‘Natramin’ which provides these minerals. They also offer the information needed to apply it in the necessary quantities, (as too much of these elements can have as detrimental an effect as too little, and can be almost impossible to remove from the soil). Adding organic mulch over the top of gourmet soil is the pièce de résistance and will suppress the weeds, reduce erosion and keep the soil cooler come summer time, when our new crops will be at their best.

Nature Notes Nature Notes - Echidnas Kon Hepers was deployed. The creature voided its bladder and bowels in a gush of liquid excrement. The stench was overpowering. The boot had to be swamped out and needed ongoing treatment with deodorant. Weeks after it was still nauseating.

Short-beaked echidnas, Tachyglossus aculeatus (meaning "with a swift tongue"), commonly called spiny anteaters, have a number of defence mechanisms of which we became very aware some years ago. We were called out to rescue an echidna being attacked by dogs. In the car, Maureen had it in a strong cardboard box on top of a towel on her lap. In no time the echidna had burrowed through the box and towel and started shredding Maureen’s legs. The only thing we could do was to

transfer it to the car boot. It was too late at night to take the echidna to a vet for a checkup and it appeared unharmed except for foam dripping from the snout, which we now know is normal. We found the echidna had dug through the car boot mat and wedged itself into the spare tyre. It refused to budge. There was no way for us to remove it without lacerated hands and heavy gloves couldn’t access it in the tight space. Eventually it relaxed enough to allow us to lift it and that’s when the ultimate escape mechanism

The text books say that the echidna’s defence mechanism is to dig straight down into the soil, which we have observed and were astonished at how quickly the animal disappeared. On very hard surfaces the tactic is to roll up into a ball, presenting only sharp spines to an attacker. The third tactic which we learnt to our disgust, is well known to wildlife carers but never mentioned in books. The incident with that echidna showed us another remarkable ability that echidnas have. To keep this rescued one safe for the night we had placed it into a heap of leaf-litter in a good size wire cage but did not padlock the latch at the top. Next morning we sifted the litter but the echidna was gone. We could not believe it had climbed up and out and we accused one another of letting it go. Since then we have learnt that they can easily climb up inside a wheely-bin and escape unless the lid is weighted down. They can very easily climb chain-wire fences. In New Guinea, Tim Flannery was amazed to see that a Long-beaked echidna he had put in a corral surrounded by a 2 metre high paling fence, climb up and walk along the top. He also noted that this animal was extremely smart. Along with the Platypus, echidnas are egg-laying mammals, the only two known monotremes (having one orifice), in the world. The female echidna has no pouch as such but a skin fold on her abdomen. A single egg is laid into this fold, hatches out after about 10 days

and the hatchling is carried for about another 50 days. It feeds by licking milk secreted from pores. When the baby echidna, or puggle, is too big to be carried, the mother leaves it in a concealed hollow, returning every five to 10 days to feed it. The puggle leaves the burrow about six to eight months later. A few years ago we would see two or three echidna road-kills along the Eumundi – Noosa Rd every week. Recently we have not seen any - dead on the road nor alive on our property. So it was encouraging to see that John and Rosemary Jeffreys found one on their property recently along that road after four years of no sightings. Also, an echidna has been observed by Fay Wiggins on both sides of the road outside the Verrierdale Hall. We hope it survives: they are not really road-smart. Although echidnas are not classed as endangered and are found in all areas of our continent, they are thin on the ground and becoming less in numbers due to habitat destruction and in no small measure, to being killed on roads. The quandary is: if we see an echidna on or beside the road our first thought is to remove it to safety. Which side of the road looks safer? The road is part of that echidna’s range and it may well have a puggle in a burrow nearby reliant on its mother to come and feed it. If we have removed her to “safety” on the wrong side from her puggle she will return there – and hopefully cross the road unscathed. If she doesn’t, the puggle dies. Echidnas do not suddenly jump out in front of cars from the roadside so caution when driving, especially where road-signs advise of wildlife in the area, will help in some part to avoid the iconic echidna becoming extinct.

There's a nice buzz in the air now at our place because we are lucky enough to have been given a hive of Australian native bees recently. Our friends have a strong hive of Trigona carbonaria that needed to be split, and we were the fortunate recipients. A hive of native bees has been on our wish list for a long time, so we're really excited to welcome them to our garden. Already they are busily coming and going at amazing speed, some carrying pollen, others working on the hive. The new hive's first job is to shore up the structure.

They will seal any spaces with tree resins, and create a protective entrance using the same method. Native bee hives are susceptible to attack from phorid and syrphid flies as well as ants, so they establish a tacky entrance as a deterrent against them. They really are amazing to watch at work. Our interest is mainly in their pollination potential for propagation purposes, because the general bee population on our property is quite low. But promoting an Australian native species also feels like a good thing to do.

Eumundi Abroad Trekking in Nepal Jack Harvison Year 7 ESS Annapurna Base Camp treks. The highest point was at 5416m in a place called Throng La Pass. The trek was quite hard at some spots, but after a while we got used to it. The climate varied a lot from the sweltering heat of rainforests at the start, to being in a snowstorm and having to wear five layers! The views from our trek were amazing. It felt pretty cool to look out from the window of your lodge and see a massive mountain or humongous glacier. Since you couldn’t drive a car to transport food it had to be carried up or grown there. A lot of the time we saw men carrying huge amounts of food or even furniture (we saw a carried load of 90kg!). My Dad Trent and I recently got back from trekking in Nepal. Nepal is a small mountainous country wedged between India and China. It is dominated by the Himalayas and has eight of the ten tallest mountains in the world – including Mt Everest. We were trekking for over three weeks, and completed the Annapurna Circuit and

My Dad loved it, but I was more excited by eating Yak Burgers. After our trek we were in the capital Kathmandu for a week and Dad did some work with the Forget Me Not charity. They are an organisation that tries to connect false orphans with their families or villages. We did lots of things with the girls like going to some of the many temples in Kathmandu and going shopping for winter coats, and made really great friends with them all and

it was very hard to say goodbye. We loved Nepal so much we are already planning our next trip back!

We finished our trek in Pokhara, which is a big tourist destination. After all our time out in the mountains it was good to have a hot shower and restaurant food. When we were trekking the food was very simple and included lots of rice – the Nepalese basically eat the same thing for lunch and dinner – Daal Baht. It’s rice and lentils, served with side dishes of curries and chutneys.
