Christmas is coming to Eumundi this week with the decorating of our first community Christmas tree, outdoor movies, Santa visiting, sparkly lights at the night market and carols by candlelight all in the off ing. Details about the many events inside. Thanks to local kids Finn and Sophia Ryan for setting the scene at Eumundi Markets last Saturday with one of Nat from Heavenly Blooms Christmas wreaths.

Lifestyle hideaway It is like owning your own piece of National Park. Wildlife abounds – a family of kangaroos can often be seen 50 mtrs from the house, king parrots pop in to steal a tomato. A native garden is a haven for small birds. A private paradise for children - trees to climb, skateboarding, motorbikes, paddocks for horses with an area ideal for an arena or tennis court. It has been owned and created by the present owners since 1980. Reluctantly they feel it is now time to downsize. North Arm

Editor's Word on the street is... Desk My goodness! For a small cluster of Hinterland villages we sure do pack a lot into two weeks. And in the lead up to Christmas we get even busier with Christmas carols, night markets, music, movies under the stars - not to mention the Christmas parties, work and community gatherings, school concerts and dance performances, or present buying and festive baking.

FER!

Even if things go at a slower pace at yours, or if you're feeling a little melancholy, I hope you'll still take the time to sit back and soak up the sparkle and toast the big guy at the North Pole for bringing that little bit of Christmas magic to Eumundi.

Community News Hot grooves on a hot Eumundi afternoon Anthony Wynne-Hoelscher they were soon cooling their southern bones in the horizon pool at Jacaranda Creek Farmstay. The bill was rounded out with some visceral blues rock from Brisbane’s Go Van Go as well as a huge Sunny Coast reggae and roots set from The Floating Bridges. Opening the bill was recent ABC Exhumed winners, delta bluesmen, The Strangest Dreamers. All profits from Eumundi Live go to benefit essential local charities: Katie Rose Cottage, Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre and Riding for the Disabled. A great start to a fantastic new community festival - and a delectable menu of fine musical grooves are planned for the New Years Eve lead-up gig on December 29! Headlining are The Trouble With Templeton with principal support, Gympie sensations Red Beard ... plus stunning Sunny Coast outfit Soula as well as Eden Mulholland, former writer and frontman of popular NZ group Motocade. www.eumundilive.com.au

In spite of the sweltering heat and threatening skies, we saw a fantastic kick-off to the Eumundi Live event on Sunday 24 November. More than 400 music lovers descended upon the town’s amphitheatre for some hot grooves from a fantastic lineup of talent. Acts reflected the music loving nature of Eumundi and the Coast generally. Headliners were Melbourne’s The Hello Morning, who played a blistering blues set under a blistering sun! Fortunately

Community News Update from Councillor Robinson update Live” off to a repairs on Memorial Drive and Peter Wellington “Eumundi sensational start changes to the Eumundi Market Noosa to call on Webya Member for Nicklin Peter Wellington said he believed a proposed development at Weyba Rd would be decided by the incoming Noosa Council and not the Regional Council. Mr Wellington said, “I asked the Minister about this matter in Parliament today and while he did say he couldn’t discuss the matter because the Bill was before the House, he said proposals should be determined by the Council in which they were situated. “In earlier discussions with the Minister I pointed out that there was concern that the developers would try to ram the development through the SCRC before the new council was up and running. “I have been approached by Cr Tony Wellington and other concerned residents of Noosa Shire about the matter. They said that there was huge community concern about the proposed development and its impact on the fragile Weyba Creek".

What a great event Eumundi Live turned out to be. The day had everything, with over 400 patrons attending, several outstanding bands, a range of food and beverage stalls, and plenty of dancing and fun. Congratulations to Anthony and Susa and all the volunteers for putting such a great event together. This was the first of six live music events at Eumundi and based on the success of this event I believe the majority of the community will support the continuation of such a great initiative. I look forward to seeing you at the next event on Sunday 29 December. "Meet and greet" councillor catch up At my latest Eumundi Market "meet and greet" event, it was terrific to see a huge turnout of people enjoying a spot of Christmas shopping. In terms of issues discussed, local residents requested improvements to Dick Caplick Park, pothole

terraces area. Division 10 Councillor Greg Rogerson and I really enjoy these "meet and greets" and urge all local residents to come along and say hello and discuss any issues while there.

Christmas spirit in us all. As this will be my last column for 2013, I wish all of the Eumundi and District community a Merry Christmas, a Happy New Year and sincere best wishes for 2014.

Feeling festive I encourage residents to check out the Sunshine Coast Festive Season Program 2013/14 available on Council’s website. The guide is stuffed full of events and activities throughout December and January including the regional Christmas Tree Trail, local festive community events and workshop, and exciting New Year’s Eve and Australia Day celebrations. And one festive event I highly recommend residents come along to is the Christmas Carols at the Eumundi Amphitheatre on 14 December. This will be a great family friendly community event sure to inspire the

Community News Is it Santa, or someone just as nice? Lillian Barry

The Belli Hall celebrated Christmas with a lavish Dinner attended by its many supporters. Volunteers are the life-blood of the Hall. One of the longest serving volunteers is John Goldsbrough; most people visiting the Hall know John as the ticket man. John ensures people feel welcome

on their arrival at the Hall, particularly first-time attendees. He also acts as MC for other fund-raising events. There is another role John faithfully undertakes that most people never see - while everyone dances, he will be in a quiet corner, counting the takings. If you saw John at this year’s Christmas dance you might have thought, ”Could that be ... Santa asleep in the corner?” No? Perhaps it’s someone just as nice, doing their job when no one is looking… perhaps it is Santa after all. More volunteers are very welcome! Local Smart Pup around town

Fran Maguire

We have our very own Smart Pup in training in the Eumundi Green area. Eleven-week-old golden retriever Monte has been with his foster carers Annabel and Grahame Wearne in Eerwah Vale for a month now and they say he is settling in well. One of Monte’s first jobs was to join the crew on the Smart Pups’ stall at the Original Eumundi Markets last week where he got lots of attention and a few cuddles from young admirers, one of whom nicknamed him “The Fluffball”. Annabel and Graham have been guide dog walkers in the past and after they heard about Smart Pups they applied to be foster puppy raisers. Monte will be with them for at least 12 months and part of their role in his training will be to expose him to a range of people to “socialise” him in a variety of environments. They will be taking him around town from time to time so keep an eye out for them and say hello. Every Smart Pup receives specialist training before he or she is assigned as an assistance dog to a child with special needs. The not-for-profit organisation covers the costs of care and training

and works with recipient families to raise up to 50 per cent of the $25,000 needed to train each dog. You can support our very own puppy by taking out a sponsorship option starting at $20 per month. Sponsors receive a pack and regular updates of puppies’ progress, and discounts from business sponsors can help offset the sponsorship outlay. www.smartpups.org.au and if you want to know more about becoming a Business Partner contact enquiries@smartpups. org.au or 0481 594 238. Smart Pups trainer and musician Andrea Kirwin and her band will be playing a fundraiser at The Shared, 13 Railway St, Yandina, 5pm Sunday 15 December. Tickets $20. www.andreakirwin.com

Snake time of the year

Cooroy-Noosa Family and Local History Group will hold their last research day and meeting of the year, at 1pm on Sat 14 Dec, at the Research Room at 41 Miva Street, Cooroy. Both local history publications are now available, Echoes of the Past in bookform at $35 a copy and the earlier book

A large Eastern Brown snake became caught in the netting trying to help himself at our vegetable garden. We called for help and Mark Neath from Buderim arrived within half an hour. The snake was approximately 150cm and Mark said he usually gets one or two calls per week but now that it’s the busy snake time of year he is getting three to five calls per day - mostly for Whip or Keelback snakes. Mark has a web site www.markneath.com with many photos to help with snake identification. Margaret Lawrence.

Pioneer Families of Cooroy and District has been released as a

CD at $15. The group will reopen on Tues 14 Jan, 2014. 5442 5570. Typhoon devastation up close We spent 16 days at Bantayan Island, a remote island in the Philippines, where typhoon Yolanda hit with winds first in one direction, then in the other direction, with a storm surge. Devastation at Santa

Fe was severe where Nenita’s family lives, perhaps 90 per cent of roofs were damaged or missing, bamboo houses were reduced to piles of sticks, there was roofing iron in trees, on the roadsides, along with debris everywhere. The rest of the island was just as severe. Coconut trees were lying everywhere, power lines had to be lifted to walk around, almost every lamp post was snapped. People were dazed, tired, stressed, traumatised, children were crying as soon as any winds were heard. Stories of survival were amazing. There was no outside help for perhaps a week, then foreign aid started to arrive. The island now has a collection of tents, and food relief is occurring. There is no electricity. We bought and repacked rice, soap, nails, biscuits for distribution. Money is further needed for food and paying local people small wages to clean up the island empowers the community. They can then pay for repairs for their fishing boats (livelihood

destroyed), coco lumber for their houses, and food. A sad situation of years of future recovery. Peter and Nenita, Sunrise Road, Eumundi.

School sport opens many pathways for children to go on to compete at a higher level. I was lucky enough to be in the school teams for swimming, cross country, athletics, table tennis and netball. After competing at a district level I made the district

When I attended district trials I was selected for the netball and basketball teams. It was so exciting to be picked for the Sunshine Coast Regional basketball team. The team flew to Cairns to play in the State Championship. This was probably the highlight of my year and my first plane flight. Eumighty Eumundi, my netball team, won Noosa Netball’s Division 2 Saturday morning competition with the huge commitment of our coach Mrs Cettou and uniforms sponsored by EDCA. Our netball team recently spent a weekend at Redlands playing in the Qld Mission Firebird’s Challenge Cup where we played well, winning seven out of nine games.

Out of school our team plays netball at Coolum on Thursday nights. I also play basketball on Saturdays and have been a member of Cooroy Dolphins Swimming Club since I was in year one. I was chosen to play representative netball for Coolum and I am in the under 16 Noosa Cyclones rep basketball team as well as their under 14 challenge team. All these teams travel away for carnivals and games.

Theatre and Arts Indee Theatre John Burls

Red Desert Gallery

Plans for the 2014 seasons at The Indee have been well and truly laid and the 20th birthday year looks in pretty good shape. The three weekend run of Alice in Wonderland in January is already attracting enquiries and the same can be said for Bronhill Encore, on the weekend of February 8th and 9th. Bronhill Encore is the “in concert” version of the smash hit stage show from 2007 at The Indee, a musical biography of the hugely talented June Bronhill. June, who as a child grew up in Broken Hill, later changed her surname to the abbreviation “Bronhill”, as a thank you to the city that financially supported her move to London, to further her career. And further it she did, virtually saving Covent Garden from bankruptcy via her performances in The Merry Widow. A musical star, an opera star, a dramatic actor and a TV sitcom star, she allowed herself no boundaries. Bronhill Encore will star: from Queensland Opera, D’Arne Sleeman; from

Opera Australia and Queensland Opera, Bernard Wheaton and from the concert stage, Elizabeth Hood, with Musical Director, Mark Leung. With glorious songs from such shows as The Merry Widow, Wizard of Oz,

The Chocolate Soldier, Barber of Seville, The Desert Song, Rigoletto, Sound of Music, Kiss Me Kate and composers such as Noel Coward, Ivor Novello

and Gilbert and Sullivan, this will be a musical blockbuster. Bookings for these shows are already open. To follow in March, the Lux Radio Theatre, a listen back in time to live radio drama and comedy, as it was broadcast on Sunday nights from the Macquarie Auditorium. Our “radio” actors don evening wear as live sound effects take place onstage. Plus there’ll be the Mother’s Day Super Concert and May-June The Vicar of Dibley.

Alex McDonald, Year 6, ESS Ignite English program Red Desert Aboriginal Art gallery owned by Paul Curtis first opened in 1997 and it has been a real part of Eumundi ever since. Paul opened the gallery because he really liked art and he thought being surrounded by it would be a dream job, and is there any better place to open it than in Eumundi? He also worked as a supplier of art prior to opening the gallery. Paul decided to open an Aboriginal art gallery because he travelled to central Australia and became inspired by the beauty and technique of indigenous art. He found out about his art source, which is in central Australia, in some of the most remote Aboriginal communities in Australia, because of an earlier job that brought him into contact with Aboriginal art galleries and artists. The gallery also has an interesting history. Paul commissioned the artist who painted the mural at Eumundi State School opposite the computer lab, the gallery has brought many artists into Eumundi and even the president of the Bahamas came for a visit! The Red Desert Gallery is a unique place and it has a really warm and inviting character, so if you have not been there yet you should. The artwork is astounding and the gallery has free entry. www.reddesertgallery.com.au

Books Jane Austen – Pride and Prejudice and Publishing Bronwyn Jones

It is a truth universally acknowledged that a writer in possession of three extraordinary novels, must be in want of a good publisher. This year, literary events around the world were held to honour the 200th anniversary of the publication of Pride and Prejudice, a novel which has sold over 20 million copies to date and, with the exception of a few years not long after Austen’s death in 1817, has never been out of print. But, unpublished authors, take heart! Jane too suffered trials and tribulations with the publishing world. Jane Austen had written Pride and Prejudice, Northanger Abbey and Sense and Sensibility in her

twenties. But it was not until 10

years later that any of her novels were published. In 1803, when Austen was still only 28 years old, a manuscript of Northanger Abbey (eventually published posthumously) had been accepted and paid 10 pounds for by London publishing house, Crosby and Co. Mr Crosby never published it and in answer to a letter from Jane Austen six years later, he said, “There was not any time stipulated for its publication, neither are we bound to publish it, should you or anyone else (do so) we shall take proceedings to stop the sale. The manuscript shall be yours for the same as we paid for it.” Incredibly it seems to us now, Jane didn’t have access to 10 pounds to buy back her novel. Even after Austen had enjoyed some financial success with three novels, her last publisher John Murray was still somewhat ambivalent in his support. He had sent a copy of Emma (never quite as popular as Pride and Prejudice but generally considered her best work) to Walter Scott, asking “Have you any fancy to dash off an article on Emma? It wants incident and romance does it not?”

An ironic twist Austen would have appreciated – Scott is rarely read any longer while her works have endured. She was proud and excited when her work was published –“I want to tell you that I have got my own darling child from London,” she says in 1813 on receiving the edition of Pride and Prejudice. Yet all of her novels were published anonymously as this was an era when public success for women writers was viewed with suspicion. In some circles her identity was known, but the first time Austen is publicly identified as the author of her novels is in a Biographical Note which accompanied the posthumous publication of Northanger Abbey and Persuasion. Even her epitaph fails to mention her literary achievements. Two hundred years on, despite inept and lukewarm publishers, Jane Austen is recognised as one of the great English novelists and is a hugely successful commercial commodity. As well as new editions of her books, spin-offs continue to fill bookstoreseverything from Pride and

Prejudice and Zombies to P.D. James’s Death at Pemberly, and

the current Austen Project with rewrites of the novels by authors such as Joanna Trollope and Alexander McCall Smith. Then there’s the seemingly endless stream of TV and movie adaptations, starting with the very silly 1940 film version with Greer Garson and Laurence Olivier and given enormous impetus by the 1995 BBC production with its almost pitchperfect casting - including Colin Firth as Mr Darcy. Anonymity is long gone. It is the name, Jane Austen, that sells now. Think of titles like Austenland, Becoming Jane, Jane Austen in Manhattan, The Jane Austen Book Club, Lost in Austen – the list goes on.

What would she make of it all? Irony and subversive humour are the hallmark of Austen’s writing, “laughing at myself or other people,” she said. Such a pity she can’t make a reappearance to have, in so many different ways, the last laugh. Two hundred years after Pride and Prejudice finally made it into print, Jane Austen would have publishers in bidding wars the minute she picked up a pen.

Eumundi Food Season’s eatings Food Peter Wolfe, photos Alain Bouvier Peter Wolfe is a local Eumundi chef who has worked in the Noosa area for many years and now owns Cedar Creek Farm Bush Foods in Belli Park. With a little preparation you can make his tasty breakfast in 15 minutes and have a great start to Christmas day.

Christmas breakfast Ingredients • 6 free range eggs • 4 croissants • 50g smoked salmon coarsely sliced • 12 fresh asparagus spears • 1 medium avocado diced in 1cm pieces • 4 tblsp crème fraiche • 2 tblsp chopped fresh coriander, chives or dill • Salt and white pepper for seasoning • Cracked black pepper and cress or baby rocket leaves for garnishing • 1 tsp butter • 1 tsp good quality oil, macadamia or olive Preparation Warm croissants in a medium oven (150°) for about 10 mins or until they are crisp on the outside and warm in the centre. Cut 5cm off asparagus tips and cut the stems into pea sized slices. Blanch in boiling salted water until cooked but still crisp. Refresh in iced water then drain. Mix

asparagus stem slices (keep the tips) with avocado. Add coriander, chives or dill and season. Loosely mix eggs with crème fraiche. This should be streaky not smooth. Method Heat a heavy bottomed pan then add oil and butter. Coat bottom of pan then add eggs and crème fraiche mix. Stir with wooden spoon until the eggs start to thicken – 30 seconds to 1 minute. Add smoked salmon, stir and remove pan from heat. Mixture should be thick but not set. Slice croissants in half. Cover bottom slice with avocado and asparagus salsa. Spoon equal quantities of egg and salmon mix on the salsa and garnish with the asparagus tips and cracked black pepper. Replace croissant top and serve with the peppery salad leaves and a jug of Bloody Mary. If you are generous with the Tabasco and white pepper in the Bloody Mary you can delete the vodka or cut it down to make it driver friendly without loss of flavour.

Health and Lifestyle Motherhood’s multi-tasking mayhem Assisi Chant It turns out there is significant research to suggest that contrary to what we believed in the nineties, multi-tasking is really only a good way to scatter a mother’s brain – not get more done. Ok, so that might be a simplification of this research, but they do say that the act of switching between two tasks

it up because the topic of this article was going to be quite significantly different to how it has turned out. I had fully intended to write about Quantum Physics, however, after managing to half-complete four paragraphs in four hours I did the only thing anyone wanting to keep their sanity does... I pressed save, made a cup of tea, hugged each of the kids and sat back down in front of a blank document to type whatever came out.

the day (such as in the life of a parent) it adds a significant amount of time to a job.

parents believe this is the case.

I’m not sure if any research has looked into the correlations between the extended time it takes to complete the day’s jobs and the level of frustration that is felt by the person completing these tasks, but I’m pretty sure we could do a quick survey at the school gate and find some concrete evidence to say that

So I have reminded myself that if I let go of any attachment and preconceived expectations about the outcome of a task and just allow it to evolve in unison with each of the other important facets of the day, then when all is said and done I will have finished each individual job and hopefully avoided building children and raising houses.

Not surprisingly then, this article became all about multi-tasking!

takes a longer time than fully completing two individual tasks one after the other. I bring this up because I am a mother, who happens to be building a house, catching up on a week’s worth of washing and housework, arranging playdates, meal times and writing articles. And most importantly, I bring

The reason multi-tasking often backfires on busy people is that when they begin working on a certain project or chore their brain has to make a decision on how each thing is to be done. When the tasks that need to be performed require very different thought or physical processes (such as in the life of a parent) the brain has to spend time switching between each mode. And if there are many "switches" back and forth throughout

Environment and Outdoors Lake Weyba – Marcus Dunes

Wildlife update Matt Popplewell

Claudia Williams

With all the publicity surrounding the approval of a development on the shores of Lake Weyba, now could be the time to take a walk to appreciate the area in question viewed from the Marcus Dunes side of the Lake. The weather has been delightful lately, and it is time to get those boots on and get walking. The best way to access Marcus Dune is from the end of Calliandra Grove near Perigian (UBD29H3). Enter the gate and keep going straight along a sheltered track past ancient Banksias and then onto a more open track through the Dunes. This trail leads onto Noosa Springs ultimately, but about halfway there is a view to die for on the left overlooking the Wallum Heathland this area is so famous for, and all the way to the unspoilt beauty of the shores of Lake Weyba with Mount Ninderry in the back ground. An early morning start would be advisable in this weather. For a shorter walk that will lead you to the shores of the lake, enter the track from Hawthorn Grove (UBD19K10) at

the rear of the playground and turn right when you get to the T intersection. After approx 250m take the first track left, this will take you to a turn -around area where you should find a small trail on the left, leading down to the lake. You can find both these walks and many more in two full colour bushwalking books recently published by three local bushwalkers here on the coast. The books are called Sunshine Coast Bush Walks

featuring 52 longer walks and

Short Walks on the Sunshine Coast

that features 38 shorter walks. The books fit perfectly into a small backpack and also make a great Christmas gift. You can purchase your copies from the Nest in Eumundi, from our website: www. sunshinecoastbushwalks.com or from Annie’s bookstore in Peregian where you can also obtain signed copies at our book launch on the 15 December from 10am to 12 noon.

We have a strong, loyal readership and our community reads us from cover to cover & Our readers keep back issues for reference and to share with visitors and family

Many of us who are regular dog walkers, or simply enjoy getting out onto our gorgeous local beaches, would have been dismayed at the number of dead birds that have been found all along our stretch of beaches of late. The birds, Short-tailed Shearwaters or Tasmanian mutton birds, are on their annual migration. It happens to be one of the longest of any bird. Travelling from Siberia to Australia the birds travel about 12,000km and many sadly die from exhaustion, injuries or starvation. Our recent weather events with powerful wind patterns and storms are a big factor in the birds' survival chances. Strong headwinds and storms are believed to have blown them off course this year and affected the weaker birds on this year's migration. The shearwaters' chances of surviving their first migration Eumundi Green is a not-forprofit fortnightly magazine made by the community for the community

can be slight. Short-tailed shearwaters leave Bass Straight in May, fly north east across the Pacific Ocean and on to the Bering Sea between Russia and Alaska to spend the Australian winter in the northern hemisphere. They live almost constantly on the move returning to their home via the east coast of Australia, to breed in late spring and summer. Many are exhausted from the long migration and “crash” onto our beaches before they reach home. A shearwater can lose almost half its body weight during the long migration so the chances of survival once washed ashore are not good. As alarming as these losses may appear, it is natural mortality. The reality is that the gruelling migration is perhaps nature's way of sorting the weak from the strong to ensure a healthy breeding population and reminds us all that despite our best intentions to keep every one of our birds alive and well, we not only constantly face a battle with human contact and their pets, but the perils of nature itself.

Nature Notes and Gardening Nature Notes

Red is all go in the plant world

Kon Hepers

Matt Popplewell

If a cranky Eastern Brown Snake is looking at you like the one to the right, you’re already in trouble. Just stand stock still and move away quietly once the snake has settled down. A few days ago an Eastern Brown moved past our back door. At over two metres long – about as long as they grow – it was potentially very dangerous. We made sure doors were closed, the dog was safe and then kept watch on the snake until it moved into scrub away from the house. We have not seen this one again. Had it returned, stayed around the house, or even come inside, we would have called a qualified snake catcher. Professional snake catchers undergo hours of training to attain a Damage Mitigation Permit for Removal and Relocation of Wildlife under the Department of Environment and Heritage Protection. The training is for correct and safe handling of reptiles and other wildlife as well. The catchers must be familiar with the Nature Conservation Act 1992, be a qualified First Aider and carry insurance. Snake catchers do charge for their services which usually just covers their costs. They often respond immediately to calls, particularly if the snake is believed venomous. An important part of the work is relocation of the snakes to a suitable habitat away from humans. The many stories about snakes returning, or “homing”, are largely incorrect. Snakes are protected by law for good reason as they are an integral part of our native fauna and help reduce exotic vermin like rats and mice. The removal of non-venomous snakes isn’t as dangerous but can still be difficult. Often the snake - usually a python or tree snake - has wedged itself into a tricky position and care is needed to avoid bites and injuring the animal. Frequently the snake has found its way into a hen house and cannot get out. Again, the sensible and legal course is to call a snake catcher. It goes without saying that bird and poultry cages should be maintained in a snakeproof condition. At times I am asked to come and remove a snake. I am neither qualified nor legally permitted. When I advise that Wednesday 11 December 2013

EG_185.indd 19

a snake catcher be called, the response is often “in that case I’ll just kill it.” Be aware of the following: over 85 per cent of all snakebites in Australia occur when someone tries to kill or interfere with a snake. It is both dangerous and against the law to kill a reptile. If you call a friend to remove a snake there is an issue with insurance cover if they’re bitten. The large Eastern Brown that came through our place must have been old and very lucky to reach that size. These snakes normally lay a clutch of 30 or so eggs, but only a couple would survive. Everything tries to kill them. We note that in this area very large Eastern Brown Snakes are generally misidentified as Taipans or King Browns. Taipans are certainly, but not frequently, found in our environs. But King Browns, correctly called Mulga Snakes, are definitely not as their habitat is the dry mulga country out west. Eastern Brown Snakes, Pseudonaja textilis, (meaning textile-like false cobra) are the eastern Australian representatives of a family of seven Brown Snake species, including the Western and Central Brown Snakes, all found in separate but sometimes overlapping areas all over the continent. They are rated at or near the top of the world’s most dangerous snakes (potent venom, easily irritated and strike repeatedly) so even qualified catchers have to be most cautious. Removing them is not a job for amateurs.

Is it just me, or do we see an increasingy glow of red plants in our beds and borders these days? Were we not all taught at school that plants can only grow with sun, water and the green pigment in their leaves known as chlorophyll? So how do plants with red leaves manage to grow so well? The colour of the plant foliage is not necessarily an indication of the amount and concentration of chlorophyll, and therefore the plant’s ability to prosper. In truth leaf colour is determined by multiple molecules, all of which can have different colours. The reason leaves look green is because chlorophyll rejects green light, while absorbing (and therefore utilising the energy within), red and blue lights. As red and blue light wavelengths are absorbed more than green, the leaf looks green. In the case of the red leaf plant, it produces a high concentration of anthocyanin, which increases the amount of blue light that is absorbed, (beyond the chlorophyll requirements), therefore making

the leaf look relatively red. Such "red" leaves often appear quite a dark red, as very little light is actually being reflected back; instead being absorbed and used. The strength of red pigmentation in plants should surprise few given the fact that the first plants on Earth were almost certainly aquatic and red. We see this in many types of seaweed. Water absorbs red light well and so there was no effect to the plant in opposing red light as there was very little of it in the water. The design and location of the red pigmentation depends on where in the meristem the mutant cells develop. Such mutations, like with humans, occur constantly within a plant but go un-noticed because they are usually in the non-meristematic area (so the new pigmentation comes with new cells), or the mutation is simply too weak to show. With many new breeds, the production of the pigmentation merely masks the chlorophyll leading to the highly successful production of red-leafed varieties we see today.

More volunteers always needed The Eumundi Brigade is always on the lookout for more volunteers. Training is conducted on the 1st and 3rd Tuesdays of every month at 7-9PM. Help is welcome in many ways beyond firefighting to use your existing skills – admin, maintenance etc. Most importantly, your commitment is limited to what you are prepared to give. Additional volunteers means the commitment for any individual is buffered. So if you’re keen, pop in on any of the above Tuesdays. Or if you see the brigade shed on Napier Road open on any other day come in and say hello. You don’t need any particular skills. You just need to want to try something new and do something useful along the way.

Eumundi Abroad Volunteering in Uganda Jan Dunlop soccer practice while I drew on my art experience and mixed it with teaching English, spelling and maths assisted by Jim. We came to know and love the children who had really nothing but a small rough classroom, a desk, a pencil and an exercise book each. During the day, for a change, we would have singing and dancing. The children laughed at our disorganised attempts at the natural African rhythm.

After two weeks with happy, smiling children attending the St Andrews Primary School in Bwebajja, Uganda we look back at one of the most enjoyable and rewarding experiences of our lives. Thanks to an earlier article in Eumundi Green by Jessica Constabe (describing her Volunteering experience in Kenya) we contacted an organisation called International Volunteer HQ (IVHQ) based in Hamilton New Zealand. Jim and I became interested and managed to align a two week teaching assignment in Uganda

following on from a small group guided Tour through Egypt, Kenya and Zanzibar. Before leaving I prepared small art and writing books for Mrs Davies' year one class at Eumundi State School to exchange with children of a similar level from St Andrews School Bwebajja. Both classes were very enthusiastic and enjoyed the project. Our days in the classroom were busy, challenging and fun. Jim would occasionally take the boys to a red dirt empty block for

happy and have so little, is a lesson to be experienced and remembered fondly. If you would like more information contact Jan and Jim dunlopjj@westnet.com.au or contact Executive Director Daniel Radcliff, International Volunteer HQ (IVHQ) daniel@volunteerhq.org or www.volunteerhq.org

The Headmaster of Bwebajja School, Patrick Lubwama, owned and managed the school. During the two weeks we were there, Jim and Patrick organised the building of a dividing wall between two classrooms to assist with a noise problem during classes. This was successfully completed before we left and the pupils and teachers were very grateful. The very hardest part of the assignment was saying goodbye to the children of the classroom. The lessons we learned from both children and adults who were always smiling and always
