Storm season arrived in the Eumundi Hinterland with a bang just before New Year’s Eve. This stunning light show was captured near Belli Park at sunset by Shirley Andrews. Regular rain still eludes our region. In 2012 and 2013 the droughts were broken at the end of January. Last year the downpour on the 24th lasted 5 days and left our region flooded in many areas. .

Happy New Year hinterland community. My resolution this year is to remember why we live here and not in a city; to go for more bush and beach walks, let the creative juices flow more, spend more time on the veranda with friends, stare at the trees, mountains, cows, chickens, kids and sometimes… to just… be… still. Oh yeah, and eat healthier and get fit. If this year you’re interested in getting involved in Eumundi Green production, or have an interest or skill you’d like to write about for our readers, then send me an email. It’s always great to get your letters. Not only are you sharing your thoughts with other readers but our councillors, politicians, commitees and groups read the Green too to find out what is important to locals. So if you want to see change, the first place to start can be here! Remember, this magazine is your community voice. Sacha Hamilton-MacLaren editor@eumundigreen.com.au

The last of the Summer Markets on Friday 3rd January was the setting for the launch of this year’s Australian Body Art Carnivale theme. The night also coincided with ‘Volunteers Night’, providing an opportunity for volunteers to sign up for this year’s event. The event depends on a team of more than 100 volunteers each year.

volunteers dressed in costumes with body paint that highlighted the talents of local artists and models. Creative Director Matt Blak and his band of volunteers set up a fundraising amusement area for the night, which included an opportunity to have a photograph taken with one of the painted models, a sideshow to test skills, raffle ticket sales and a Zombie Restaurant. To enhance the theme, stalls included fairy floss and snow cones. This year’s Carnivale will be held on the weekend of the 3 - 4 May. This Sunday Eumundi will celebrate Australia Day and the achievements of 21 of its own in Eumundi’s annual Australia Day awards. The celebration will recognize 21 strong contenders in five award categories: Community Improvement, Contribution to Culture, Sports Achievement, Contribution to Sustainability and Young Achiever awards.

Cr Greg Rogerson and Cr Steve Robinson will present winner and finalist citations at the short informal celebration 9.30-10.30am at Eumundi Aquatic Centre. The finalists’ fields of endeavour vary greatly as does their age and experiences but none of them are super heroes rather just ordinary people doing extraordinary things and now getting a pat on the back from their Eumundi community.

Each finalist will receive a double pass to the Australia Day Eumundi Live concert. The five winners will all receive a framed photo of the iconic Eumundi Post Office. The photo taken some years ago on ANZAC Day by Fran Maguire features a draped Australian flag and creatively captures the spirit of Eumundi.

Members of the community are encouraged to be at the pool to cheer the finalists on, to catch up with friends and to share in a gold coin slap up Aussie breakfast too. The awards ceremony is sponsored and organised by Eumundi Historical Assn and the Eumundi and District Community Association.

Community News Uni students consult with Eumundi community Vicki O'Rourke

Last September, regional and urban planning students at the University of the Sunshine Coast (USC) conducted a community consultation project as part of their studies, gathering community feedback for the Eumundi and District Community Association (EDCA) regarding the proposed senior’s accommodation development ‘Eumundi Hamlets’. The students consulted with a range of stakeholders including seniors groups, local residents and visitors, site neighbours, Council, and the Eumundi Historical Association using a

range of methods including workshops, focus groups, surveys and interviews.

- such as accessibility to the Aquatic Centre and train -but constraints, which can be addressed, in terms of access to centre of town for shopping and services and the low lying site. Also highlighted were a number of key features that will assist EDCA with their planning: the need for universal or accessible design in accommodation; onsite Wi-Fi; sustainable features such as rainwater tanks and solar power; an on-site community facility and community garden; and a desire to maintain

interaction with the broader community. USC would like to thank all participants and EDCA for their support; the project allowed planning students to gain ‘real world’ experience in community consultation.

Participants were asked whether they thought Eumundi needs a seniors’ village, how it might affect the community, what were important features, and what they thought about EDCA’s proposed design for the site. The students presented the results to EDCA and other attendees late last year, showing that those surveyed saw a need for affordable seniors’ accommodation in Eumundi. Participants suggested the proposed site has benefits

Community News and Your Say Farewell from the pharmacy For the last 7 years I have had the privilege and honour of working as a Pharmacist and Head of Respiratory Medicine at Eumundi Village Pharmacy. I cannot begin to explain the immense job and personal satisfaction that I have had in this time. I have worked with some fantastic friends and hopefully helped many of you in Eumundi with any of your medication needs and queries. For many of you that don’t know I suffer from Cystic Fibrosis (CF), a genetic disorder affecting all the body organs but particularly the lungs. There is no cure and unfortunately my health has slowly deteriorated to the point where my Doctors have advised

me to stop working. They have told my family and I that I will most likely require a double lung transplant within the next 1-3 years. It is with great sadness that I have to retire and leave the employment of two very special people, John and Tania Broadbent. Their assistance to both me and my family over the last 7 years cannot be measured. Their compassion, dedication, and constant donation of their own time and money to the community is truly inspirational and I know I speak for all their staff when I say it is the best place to work in the world.

Hopefully at some point in the future I can return with new lungs and work for both of them and the people of Eumundi again.

and I currently work Tuesdays and Wednesdays only. After retirement I will still be popping in to say hello regularly though.

Replacing me, whilst originally thought to be a difficult task has proven rather easy as my sister in law Stephanie Bowen has been working at Eumundi since June last year and Tania herself will now be returning from her holiday (maternity leave) so undoubtedly the people of Eumundi will continue to be serviced with a pharmacy that abounds with knowledge, compassion and understanding.

As a work farewell to all my friends and family we have organised an afternoon at the the Champagne Gardens at the Corbould Park Races on Sunday 9 Feb. Details are available at the Pharmacy for anyone wishing to attend. Finally I won’t say goodbye but I will say thank you as I hope one day to return. Doug Porter, soon to be retired pharmacist, Eumundi Village Pharmacy

My final day at the pharmacy will be Wednesday 29 January

For a vibrant, busy town that continues to grow and remains a drawcard and showpiece for the Coast, why are so many of Eumundi’s buildings left in a derelict state? What’s it going to take to get a little TLC?

In the Spotlight The dance stops in Eumundi training in England at Bush Davies, The Royal Ballet School and Rambert Dance, Deborah and Richard met while dancing as soloists at the State Theatre in Braunschweig, Germany. They were cast together as Romeo and Juliet and fell in love.

Professional Ballet Soloists, Ballet Company Directors and International Choreographers, Deborah Preece-Brocksom and Richard Leader settled in Eumundi just before Christmas. Now retired, the couple run and own The Dance Centre Peregian Springs. After their dance

As well as twenty years dancing ballet professionally, they also worked as Ballet Company Directors in Eastern Germany when the Berlin Wall fell and toured, choreographed and directed ballet companies all over Europe. Richard went on to dance contemporary works and then on to a Musical Theatre career in America. Deborah initiated the Interstate Programme for The Vienna State Ballet Company and the Austrian Government, as well as getting a First Class Honours Degree in Dance Education. After years of windowless rehearsal studios the couple are loving life in Eumundi.

As Eumundi residents, Deborah and Richard would like to offer a Dance Scholarship to a Eumundi child. The applicant, aged between eight and 16 yrs, should be passionate about dance, possess natural talent, motivation and dedication and be aiming for a career in classical ballet or contemporary dance. Scholarship Auditions are on 25 January at The Dance Centre. 0400 029 198 or 0400 031 626.

The new Noosa council At the start of January, the new Noosa Council held their Declaration of Office at Cooroy, rather than the Council Chambers in Tewantin as the hinterland is seen to be equally important. “Noosa means Noosa Shire, not Noosa Heads,” said new mayor Noel Playford. Mayor Playford secured 78.55 percent of mayoral votes last November.

About 29,797 voters, out of 35,000, turned out to have their say in the council election. That’s an impressive 83.82 per cent. The Declaration of Office was a happy and proud occasion with about 250 people in attendance. Those present included the Deputy Prime Minister, Warren Truss.

flock to the art room to paint, draw and sketch. The younger children look up to their older school mates and the children from the higher grades are very supportive and encouraging to the younger children. It is wonderful to see the children share ideas and techniques and admire each other’s work. The art class is an initiative of North Arm School to foster the love of art and provide an opportunity for children to let their artistic skills shine. Each child is encouraged to develop their own unique art style while learning new techniques.

Children at North Arm love art so much they even come into class during their lunch break. Every Friday afternoon a group of children from grades 3 to 7

Currently the children are working on oil pastel drawings of toucans and an acrylic painting of a rainbow lorikeet. “I just love coming to art class,” says Josh, “Because all I have to think about when I am here is doing my art.” The end of last year also saw the children entering a national drawing competition to design a logo for the Google Home Page.

In keeping with the location of the films the evenings will feature decoration and food from the region. Members are also encouraged to get into the spirit of the night and dress in the clothing of the area or the period. The Preview launch last December featured a glittering Eiffel Tower, French treats and cheeses, champagne and a host of berets.

The February feature from Italy is the multi-award winning “Ladri di biciclette” (Bicycle Thieves). Also known as The Bicycle Thief, the black and white neorealist film is a work of outstanding artistry from director Vittorio de Sica. Released in 1948, the film portrays the poverty and desperation of a father searching for his stolen bicycle and provides an unforgettable picture of post-war Italy. Yirrmal & the Yolngu Boys Darren Walker Having spent two years living in East Arnhem Land in the Northern Territory and being captured by the power and beauty of the strong culture that exists there, particularly in the song and dance, it was my mission on my one day visit to Woodford that I would catch Yirrmal & the Yolngu Boys playing a set and I wasn’t disappointed. Yirrmal comes from the community of Yirrkala. He is a singer-songwriter and guitarist who sings about his homeland and culture. He is related to Geoffrey Gurrumul Yunupingu on his mother's side and his 10

father, Witiyana Marika, was a singer and dancer in Yothu Yindi. In his set played here at Woodford, with its mix of contemporary and traditional song and dance, it showed influences from both Gurrumul and Yothu Yindi. Yirrmal announced to the crowd during his set that he was unwell but if he hadn’t of said, you would never have known as he delivered a powerful and emotional performance. His vocal performance was incredibly strong and touching and his ability to communicate his strong message in his songs

and connect with the crowd was way beyond his years of such a young man. The Yolngu Boys are brothers that accompany Yirrmal with Didgeridoo and traditional dances and, with their obvious extensive knowledge of traditional Yolgnu songs, provided another dimension to this already powerful performance. In his promotional material, Yirrmal states “We're living in two worlds, learning in two worlds, carrying a message, a sharing of culture. We're

exploring new horizons with our sound, mixing western styles with our traditional song, adding a new dimension to music. We aim to set an example for Indigenous youth, and to be being strong, positive role models for the young generation." Yirrmal & the Yolngu Boys are inspiring young artists who have a bright future ahead of them. If you get the chance to see them live, take the opportunity to be touched by the traditional and contemporary sounds of Arnhem Land. Thursday 23 January 2014

Music and Film Eumundi Music Anthony Wynne- Hoelscher If music be the food of love, play on... So said William Shakespeare all those centuries ago. And, it still rings true today... and no more so, right here in Eumundi. We are blessed to have musicians in all shapes and colours living in our midst. But the art that results from this fantastic pool of talent could not exist in a vacuum, so songs can only soar up here in these parts because of the support and love of music by all of us! With Joe’s Waterhole, the Green Room, Alfrescos Garden Cafe, Bohemian Bungalow, Original Eumundi Markets, Full Moon Dance plus Eumundi Live, all elevating and celebrating music in its many genres, musicians and music lovers alike can look forward to a 2014 full of song. Performing at the markets on Saturday are Joe Davis and Hundred Acre Woods – on a musical jaunt up to our part of the world from Victoria. Down at the Green Room from 2pm on Oz Day, the Brown Trouts will be swinging you into an Aussie themed beach party.

Also look out for Alfresco's Suitcase Sundays with artists such as Shannon Sol Carroll laying down some sweet grooves. And back at Joe’s they’ve kicked into 2014 with the Studio126live Originals Improv Open Mic on Thursdays. This is a great time for locals to come along and share original music, comedy, poetry, whatever - as long as it is original... This Sunday – don’t miss the special Eumundi Live Australia Day festival - with a delectable menu of fine musical grooves planned. Headlining are The John Steel Singers, touring their new album, Everything’s A Thread… robust, eccentric melodies and those trademark harmonies. Also on the bill are The Dawn Chorus, making their mark on the local and international music scene since 2008. Plus blues sensation Barry Charles and the Deeper Beat and the Tea Society - a 5 piece indie rock band hailing from the Sunshine Coast playing a fusion of sunny indie rock with a jazzy funk vibe. Spotlight charity for this gig is the Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre.

ECCO community services

Ticket to ride 0488 322 323 Regular passengers on Thursday 2 January with the first green tickets issued ready to board the community bus for the weekly shopping trip to Cooroy with bus driver John O’Sullivan. Spokesperson for the group Jan Napier said that the weekly service is much valued particularly by Eumundi’s senior citizens.

From 1 January passengers on the community bus need to purchase a ticket to ride from the driver instead of making a donation. This change is required to comply with the Dept of Transport and Main Roads requirements for a general category bus service. The requirement to book ahead remains unchanged. There are three ticket prices: Zone 1 Red Tickets – within Eumundi town boundary (map on the bus) $3 per one way ride, ticket from the driver Zone 2 Green Tickets – Doonan, Verrierdale, Belli Park, Eerwah Vale, North Arm, Cooroy $5 per one way ride, ticket from the driver Zone 3 Blue Tickets – Noosa Tewantin $10 per one way ride minimum 6 passengers booked and paid for in advance by phoning 0413 199 766. We ask regular passengers to assist our great drivers during the changeover to these new arrangements.

Hats off to Eumundi vollies Pussycat Annie and living raggedy ann doll Kerrie were hosts for the community volunteers night on the last summer night market. Dressing up was to support the launch of this year’s body art carnivale “Dreams and Nightmares” on the same night.

Eighty volunteers from various community groups received a modest voucher from their organization for food from a market stall to recognize their year’s work. Most were accompanied by family and friends who joined in what was voted a night of great fun catching up, enjoying the food and other stalls and catching a Starry Nights movie. We congratulate and thank the volunteers for their contribution to the development and community spirit that Eumundi is famous for. Our special thanks to volunteers who work the car park and keep Eumundi Green fresh and vibrant. Thanks also to the volunteers who looked after the volunteers and liaised with the stall holders on the night to achieve voucher exchange for payment.

Books

Indee Theatre John Burls

Yet another literary doorstop? Judith Pattison There seems to be a consensus that books are getting longer too long, in fact - and are often in need of good editing (sort of like modern children in need of a good spanking). As an example, Eleanor Catton’s 2013 Booker Prize winning The Luminaries is more than 800 pages, the longest ever to win the prize. However, I really can’t fault The Luminaries for its length; I can’t imagine cutting a single word. Like a physical journey it takes as long as it takes.

I had the great pleasure of meeting June Bronhill at the opening of the Melbourne season of the musical, Robert and Elizabeth (based on the Barretts of Wimpole St). It was in May 1966 at the Princess Theatre and the show ran for six months. June’s sparkling personality left an indelible impression on me and many years later I thought why not write a musical biography about her. Bronhill ran for three weeks to full houses and we brought a slightly revamped version back the folowing year titled Bronhill Encore. Now eight years later we’re thrilled to present Bronhill Encore, with the glorious voice of Queensland Opera’s D’Arne Sleeman, Opera Australia and Queensland Opera’s Bernard Wheaton, Musical and Concert star Elizabeth Hood and Maddie Leahy as the young June. Musical director is Mark Leung. Shows covered in Bronhill Encore form a treasure trove of great music; The Chocolate Soldier, the Sound of Music, Perchance To Dream, Robert and Elizabeth, Kiss Me Kate, The Wizard of Oz, Die Fledermaus, Barber of Seville, The Desert Song, Don Pasquale, Patience and The Merry Widow are all included.

Donna Tartt’s long awaited The Gold Finch could also serve as a doorstop. It tells the story of Theo Decker, a boy living in New York with his much loved mother. She is killed by a terrorist bomb on a museum visit. Theo survives the attack and in the chaos is persuaded by a dying man to take a painting, the Goldfinch by Carel Fabritius. Like Tartt’s previous novels The Secret History and The Little Friend, The Gold Finch is a psychological thriller. It is also an exploration of contemporary class issues in America and clichéd notions

of good and bad. Sometimes it did seem too long, but I was bothered more by the erratic pace and implausibility of some events. Even these didn’t interfere with my engagement though. The characters, the richness of their lives and the places they inhabit are more vividly imprinted in my mind than anything else I have read in a while. I have decided to reframe my approach to The Gold Finch. This is a big messy book, a bit like life. The reader just has to be up to the challenge and be grateful for Tartt’s generosity with her extraordinary talents.

Two performances only. Saturday 8 February at 7.30pm, Tickets $25, concessions $22, and Sunday 9 at 2pm, tickets $22. Both shows are already booking well. Book now on 5472 8200 or www. eumundilivetheatre.com The season of Alice in Wonderland had a shaky start with the first weekend marred by the heatwave, which caused quite a few bookings to be transferred. However the middle and third weekends drew full houses to what was a truly magical production. Very young, mainly local, members of the cast did very well, as did the older brigade. The Indee threw a beaut party for cast and crew on the final day.

Arts The joy of sharing creativity

Tinbeerwah Art Group Classes for the Tinbeerwah Art Group (TAG) resume on Thurs 30 and Fri 31 January. Resident Guest Tutor for 2014 is award winning artist Lynn Fraser Roberts. The TAG is one of the longest running art groups on the Coast and is well known for its diversity. It was founded 18 years ago by the late Gwen Blair. Members are encouraged to develop their own individual ideas and techniques in contemporary and traditional styles in oils, watercolours, acrylics, pastels and mixed media. Classes are held in school term times at Tinbeerwah Hall (corner Cooroy and Sunrise Rds) on Thursday and Friday mornings 9am - 12pm. New members welcome. Jan Cooke 5473 0235 or Avril Hare 5448 1448

Young children are such experts; give them some clay or paper and pens and they’ll make stuff, any stuff, without really caring about what it is or if it’s any good. They’ll show us the final article with joy and pride. They know how to be free and let things flow. Picasso said “Every child is an artist. The problem is how to remain an artist once he grows up.” Adults suffer from the fears of not being good enough, “stuffing it up” or wasting our precious time and resources, so often we just stop playing with our hands, making stuff. We allow this precious flame of freedom to play to be snuffed out by some harsh inner critic. But creating has such value. We experience freedom; as we play with our hands our mind switches off, our worries leave us. We are in the moment. We engage our imagination, open up to new possibilities, take risks and, often when we least expect it, something wonderful appears. Thursday 23 January 2014

As Twlya Tharp said “art is the only way to run away without leaving home”. I have had the absolute pleasure of “teaching” two small groups of people the basics of clay sculpture recently. It feels more like I am a guide, and they all go off on their own path of discovery. I’ve been amazed at the variety of their work and the way things unfold unique to each person. One student starts shaping clay with no clue what it will become and finds amazing heads appear. Others may have some inkling but things evolve and ideas come along the way. It’s play, and very satisfying discovering what will happen next. It’s also precious time out even mobile phones can’t reach us in the studio. I have had lovely feedback about the spin offs of being creative again. This precious “me” time is nurturing, relaxing and lowers stress in the following days. It also helps work flow later that day. It creates openness to the beauty around us. Perhaps this is time to nurture our soul, and our soul pays us back as we journey on through life. As Bruce Rogers said “Art, being quite useless, except to the soul, is the highest of all human endeavours”.

Food Rotation Lucy Cloonan It is common for us to always eat the same foods as it makes life easier and we don’t have to think about it, plus we all have our favourites and happily stick to them week in, week out. In my opinion however, variety is the spice of life and the more foods you expose yourself to, the more nutrients your body will receive. My research also shows, if we always consume the same foods we are at more risk of developing intolerances to them. Rotating our foods or food groups can make a huge difference to our health and how we feel, and can also help prevent food addictions.

Lifestyle Are you separating or considering separating? Candice Rosborough-Ball A New Year, a new start – and for some a new start means ending a relationship. The key to seeing through this resolution is to remain true to your decision and work with your family, counsellor (if need be) and lawyer to stay on track. If your relationship has ended, or you are considering ending it, I recommend you work through this checklist. Ask yourself: • What parenting arrangements are going to work best for the children? Can I work out these arrangements with my former partner, or do we need help to come to a healthy agreement? • What property arrangements are fair and workable for my former partner and me? Do I need to do anything immediately to preserve assets until we work out an agreement? Can we agree on property matters, or do we need to receive advice about our entitlements and then mediate a settlement?

• What maintenance do I need, if any? What maintenance does my former partner need, if any? What maintenance do the children need? • Do I have a Will? If I do, does it still reflect what I want to happen if I die? If I don’t have a Will, who do I want to administer my Estate if I die and who do I want to receive my assets if I die? • Do I have superannuation and/ or life insurance policies? Who are my current beneficiaries? Do I want to change those beneficiaries?

Dr Karen who has family on the Coast will be working Monday to Thursday each week and some Saturdays from February. Dr Patti is currently available on Monday, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays. Appointments welcome.

• What is the timeframe within which I would like to achieve a final settlement with my former partner? What can I do to ensure that happens (such as talk with my former partner about what he/she is proposing and/or meet with a lawyer)? If you are able to agree on parenting, property and/or

about what type of settlement is best for you. Remember – knowledge is freedom, so if you don’t know what your rights are, meet with a lawyer to gain that knowledge.

Environment and Outdoors Life on a better ridge - summer's here Claudette Betteridge

The long days are here on the ridge. Given the path of least resistance, it is much more preferable to work with the environment rather than against it so the time we get up each morning is inversely proportional to the temperature forecasted that day. The hotter it’s likely to be, the earlier we get up to get jobs done before the heat sets in. Work in the garden happens in shifts - dawn until mid-morning (on a cool day) and early afternoon until dusk. This is when we water and prune, as it is not only easier on us humans, but the plants do better because of it too. The mid-day hours are spent inside and on the hottest days we take our cues from the animal kingdom and find a shady tree to sit under or some cool tiles to lie on. Our egg-laying friends are well cared for too; the sunflowers we planted a month or so ago are now large and lush and provide both shade and seed to snack on, old feed bags have been sewn together to make temporary shade sails and the arrowroot we cut back months previous also offer shelter from the baking rays of the sun, as well as a great hiding place from the sneaky hawks who would like to make a

quick meal of our growing chicks. Old milk and juice bottles are put to good use - each night we fill them with water & freeze them solid, then take their lids off & lay them on their side over the animals’ water containers. As they thaw they drip refreshing cool water for thirsty critters. Small seedlings are given shade with cut banana leaves or bamboo frames, and to stop the fishpond from simmering the guppies we use an old beach umbrella to block the worst of the sun.

But rain or shine, truly the best part of our hot summer days are the cool balmy evenings when twilight is long and breeze blows softly. A cool drink fades the effects of the day and the powdery scent of vibrant blooms fills the air and reminds us that summer is well and truly here.

Summer causes us to consider the heat pretty seriously, but it would be remiss of us not to think about the effect the inevitable rains will have as well. The early hours of a fine day are a good time to check gutters for leaf litter, sticks and other debris. The last thing you want when the rains come is to have water come cascading over your gutters, especially if you are on tank water and are (quite literally) sweating on catching every drop. It may be tempting to do this job of an afternoon, but given the solar storage capacity of our roofs the tin or tiles can still give quite a nasty burn! The morning time frame also ensures you don't lose light and can get the whole job over and done with in one go.

Australian Packaging Covenant - ANNUAL REPORT 2013

Recycling rates in Australia have broken new records according to the latest Australian Packaging Covenant (APC) annual report. The overall recycling rate for post-consumer packaging in Australia was 64.2 per cent in 2013, a 65 per cent jump from the 39 per cent baseline established in 2003. The recycling rate for recovered fibre packaging, such as cardboard products, has also increased to a

new record high of 78 per cent. With a 128 per cent increase in recycling tonnes since 2003, glass is the most improved material type when it comes to recycling rates followed by plastics (73 per cent) and paper/ cardboard (70 per cent). condition for lack of water or other reasons, the presence of mistletoes ‘extracting’ moisture and nutrients can tip the host over the edge.

A common saying is that if you stand under mistletoe, especially at Christmas time, you are likely to be kissed. Not at our place: you are much more likely to be showered with dead leaves and twigs and to have sticky seeds and bird droppings in your hair. Mistletoes are hemi-parasitic plants: they have green leaves and do photosynthesize, but extract some nutrients and moisture from the host plants. Usually they appear as dense clumps of foliage attached to branches of trees; often their leaves mimic the leaf size, shape and colour of the host trees. The tubular flowers are quite pretty, usually coloured yellow, red and green. They are pollinated by insects, eventually yielding small sticky seeds. Frequently mistletoes are noticed festooning unhealthy or even dead trees and are thought to be the cause of the trees’ demise. That is not necessarily the case. If the host trees are healthy, hosting one or two clumps of this semi-parasite does not harm the trees but if they are stressed and in poor Thursday 23 January 2014

EG_187.indd 19

The dense clumps of mistletoe are used by many bird species as safe nesting sites and in turn birds play a major part in distributing the seeds. In fact, one bird has developed a specialised technique: the swallow-like Mistletoe Bird (Dicaeum hirundinaceum) feeds on the seeds, then sits along a tree branch which ensures that the seeds in its droppings land on the branch, along with a small packet of fertiliser. The seeds are coated in a sticky substance called viscin which hardens and ‘grafts’ the potential seedlings to the branch at a site called a haustorium, where it also penetrates the host branch. (The word ‘mistletoe’ is derived from Anglo-Saxon ‘dung twig’.) A recent study investigated the part mistletoe plays in a woodland environment. A section was cleared of all mistletoe and monitored annually compared to a control area. The surprise was that mistletoe turned out to be a keystone species, that is, it has a disproportionate effect on the local environment. Within three years one third of bird species had disappeared from the cleared area. Again surprisingly it was the insectivorous small birds that were most affected because the large amount of leaf and other litter dropped by mistletoes was missing, reducing the numbers of insects present.

At our place we have two different species: a clump of Amyema miquellii in a Black Wattle and Dendrophthoe glabrescens on a citrus tree. This one is not clumping but spreading along the citrus branches by means of attached epicortical runners. Even with an excellent book we find it difficult to make a positive identification. Some species are variable and almost identical to others. There are over a thousand species of mistletoe

world-wide. Australia has about ninety species, thirty or so in SEQ with about a dozen in this area. There has always been interest in this plant: one of the old Norse legends tells how, when the favourite god Baldr was under threat, all living things, plants and animals swore an oath not to harm him. Only the mistletoe abstained and it was a spear made from this plant that killed him.

Alf rewarded for service Eumundi’s First officer, Ian Poad (right), recently presented Alf Newman (left) with the Diligent and Ethical Service Medal. The medal was awarded by the Commissioner of Queensland Fire and Rescue Service and Queensland Fire Brigades (QFRS) to distinguish Alf for his prolonged membership and commitment to ethical standards, diligence and integrity. Alf joined the Eumundi District Rural Fire Brigade in 1999, acting as Brigade Chairman from 2001 until 2013. He also held the post of Second Officer from 2005 until 2006, before becoming First Officer, a position he held until 2010. Well into his 80’s and experiencing health issues,

Alf stepped into the breach in 2012 as First Officer again. Alf Newman has always been an exemplary volunteer and the Eumundi community is grateful for his dedication and generosity.

Gardening Summer gardening project Annie Wilson What a scorching summer we've had! The heat made daytime gardening unbearable, and my forays into the garden were made only to water thirsty plants and animals. But my planned summer gardening project was to establish a new veggie patch and the hot, hot days were trying to spoil my plans. Our house really needs a couple of shade trees and the ideal location is - you guessed it - right in the middle of my current small plot. Like much of this area, the land here is sloping, so there are

few locations that provide ideal conditions for a veggie patch. I decided on a spot between our water tanks that will get enough sun, and that has some shade for my leafy greens. We've built a large raised bed and incorporated a trellis for climbers. I'll use big pots for individual tomato and capsicum plants, and there's a smaller raised bed for a dedicated herb garden. My first seedlings have sprouted, and I'm really excited about the new life that's beginning in the garden.
