We’ve had a busy first month of the year in Eumundi what with Australia Day celebrations, live music and busy markets. It’s a strange time of year - we’re back at work, back at school, back from holidays and the community has a sense of excitement and determination about the year ahead. But everyone already seems tired and shell-shocked... I think February has taken us all by surprise. This is the month though to find our rhythm for the year. There may be classical music at sunset in Eumundi this Autumn. North Arm School’s Stephanie Alexander Garden program is looking for more support. Weyba will remain untouched. Internet connection in Eumundi and Eerwah Vale is rotten. The double entrance/exit at the Eumundi State School carpark is better. Sunspace Café in Doonan is opening as an organic café that will stock organic products.

Computer Notes
Nathan Woodcock
Are you still running that old computer from years ago, with the same old version of Microsoft Word? From April Microsoft is ceasing all support, security patches and updates for Windows XP and Microsoft Office 2003. What this means is any bugs or exploits or issues with XP that are discovered will not be fixed anymore, so virus writers and cyber criminals will be exploiting those security holes at their leisure, meaning more viruses and risk of theft and damage for you! If you are running XP or Office 2003 on your computer you will be vulnerable after April, and you must either upgrade Windows or replace your computer. This is especially true for businesses where extensive down time due to viruses can eat into your bottom line. Upgrading Windows from XP to Windows 7 or 8 requires a clean install and this can be a time consuming and tricky business especially with an older PC that may not even be supported. Often it's more cost effective long term to replace the computer.

Community News Local legend Daph celebrates 89 years
Gill awarded OAM The Eumundi Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre was established in 1997 by Gill and late husband Col and since then has nursed and returned to the wild thousands of injured, orphaned and abandoned birds and animals. It’s operated by Gill and 30 volunteers.
Daph Greer with Wendy Birrell (left), Joyce Turnbull, David Chapman, Reg Sharp and Tricia Chapman cutting her birthday cake at a morning tea at Noosa Nursing Home.
The Centre is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year and the number of admissions of birds and animals has grown from just 25 in 1997 to nearly 1400 in 2012. The Centre is very proud of its overall release rate of 60 per cent, which is far higher than other similar organisations.
Help needed to keep up the Quarry fight in court The No Blasted Quarry campaign is currently at a standstill. The legal teams exchanged submissions that contained a detailed summary of their arguments, on 3 February, and both parties will be appearing in Court on 7 Feb to respond. Residing Judge Robertson will have the opportunity to ask questions and seek clarification. This unexpected appearance in Court on 7 February is going to deplete The No Blasted Quarry group’s funds greatly. With fundraising volunteers fatiguing, the volunteer group is asking for more donations from community members to help take this fight to the end. All donations are tax deductible and details can be found at www.quarryfight.com.au or by emailing ycpamembers@gmail.com.
Weyba left untouched
At this year’s Sunshine Coast Australia Day Awards The Eumundi Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre founder Gill Brownhill was awarded a Medal of Australia Award (OAM).
Sunshine Coast mayor Mark Jamieson said, “We are extremely fortunate to have dedicated people like this in our community – people who make a difference through their outstanding contributions to this region. “It is only through awards such as these that we can provide some much-deserved, public recognition for [their] work,” he said.
LIVE AT THE BOHO 5 Feb to 9 Feb the Boho Team have ‘GONE FISHING’! Opening with a bang on 12 Feb
Last Thursday, the local community was overjoyed to hear that the Sunshine Coast Council(SCC) had decided to reject the Noosa on Weyba development application that lies in the SCC local government area. The developers failed to convince Council and the community that their proposal would not damage the natural lake environment and would benefit the Sunshine Coast region. Local Councillor Stephen Robinson spoke well against the development as did Councillor Christian Dixon. Thursday 6 February 2014

Congratulations to Friends of Lake Weyba for their tireless campaigning and the many hundreds of residents and community groups who submitted written objections. Local campaigner Chris Sutton said, “It’s great news for Lake Weyba residents and all of us who love the local area. “The community at Weyba ran a great campaign and were well supported by locals from all over the Noosa, Eumundi, Verrierdale and Doonan area,”she said.

Community News Councillor Robinson update Firstly I’d like to wish everyone a happy new year, I hope 2014 is off to a terrific start for you. The issue of regulated parking is a big one for Eumundi and Council is going to work very closely with the local community on this to ensure we hear from as many locals as possible and reach the best outcome possible. A survey conducted by theECCOhas provided some feedback on this, however the community as a whole has expressed to me that it wants to be involved in the decision making to find a solution that works for Eumundi. To enable this to happen, the next step I want to take is to set up a community forum in the very near future to ensure that everyone gets the chance to have a say. School parking problems eased It’s great to see the new-look bottom access to the state school car park. Council widened it to two lanes of traffic so it’s a
lot easier for parents, staff and visitors to get in and out during peak periods. We also levelled out the entrance so the problem of cars scraping the ground as they drive in and out has been alleviated. On top of this, Council has shortened the bus parking and established extra car spaces in this vicinity along Caplick Way. We have also restricted the time period in front of the school to 10 minutes in order to facilitate better traffic management and flow during busy drop off times.
pool looked fantastic, and the whole place had an excellent vibe about it. I was invited to speak on the day and made comment about how there were two types of people in the world – those who live in Australia and those who wish to live in Australia. I hope these comments weren’t misinterpreted as I was simply trying to express how truly lucky we are to call the greatest country on earth our home.
On the opposite side of the road we are investigating the option of installing more angled parking spaces. Great Australia Day It was a real pleasure to attend the Australia Day event at the Eumundi Aquatic Centre on January 26. The event’s organising committee did a terrific job and the set up with the flowers in the

About getting ADSL or NBN in Eumundi After living in Doonan for the past 16 years and working in Eumundi for 10, I was thrilled to move into town and build a new house for my sons and I. The house is great, the locals as always friendly and the township warm and accepting just as I expected. Eumundi is growing; new homes, new families, new businesses are moving in and Eumundi's residential boundaries are expanding. With this in mind (considering Eumundi is only; 120.6 Km from Brisbane approx 1 hour 20 minutes, 20.9 Km from Noosa, approx 20 minutes, 30.5 Km from the Sunshine Coast Airport, approx 25 minutes) you'd think we were living on the fringe of the beyond - well at least that's how Telstra sees it. With all the things that need to be arranged for a new house, I never thought getting internet or adsl would be an issue. When I arranged to have the landline installed in preparation for the internet connection, at no stage did anyone flag the possibility of not being able to access adsl. I paid $300 for the privilege of a landline, only to be then told that there was not a spare port at the exchange. I didn't want a landline. We use our mobiles but was told we needed to install it in order to get adsl! Now I have a landline that I don't want but can't get rid of as I'm on "The Waiting List." When I commented to the Telstra staff member that you'd think I was living at the back of Bourke they happily responded, "Oh Bourke have the NBN." To which I asked, “So when is Eumundi getting the NBN?" The response was, “Oh your area isn't scheduled to receive the NBN at present.” Since then I've tried everything including the Ombudsman and yes,
Thursday 6 February 2014
EG_188.indd 9
some people will say just use wireless! But with two teenage boys and a tight budget, $95 a month for 15GB is not an option - and why should we be penalised for Telstra's greed? Surrounding my house there’s eight vacant blocks not to mention the six new homes in the next street and 15 plus vacant blocks also in that estate. Too bad for those planning on running a business from home! I'm sure I'm not the only frustrated person moving into the area to be left high and dry by Telstra? Maybe it's time we rallied together to see what can be achieved? Theresa Yaxley Same here. Paying for a phoneline that never gets used in the hope that a port becomes free! Very frustrating after all the effort of digging trenches, getting phone on, looking out for the best broadband plan, only to find there's nothing available. Seems so primitive. Elizabeth Louise Battersby welcome to my nightmare! There are ports, but [Eumundi] are "unsupported." The "switch" was upgraded two years ago - to a point. We were expecting the NBN, but alas nothing. Oh and by the way the "switch" is next due for an upgrade in "Early 2016" - this info is from Telstra just yesterday. What to do? Wendy Birrell I have crap internet wifi reception where I live in Eumundi and was thinking of getting ADSL until Jan Ammitzboll posted this - think we need to start a petition. Telstra needs a wake up - why wasn't Jan told when she got the phone line put in that there would be a long wait or why dont they check for availability at the time - they take your money then tell you to wait in line!
Amber May Grimley Exactly the same here for us. New house, new phone line for Hubbie's business, and no adsl available. Amazing and sad for home run business. Lyn Johnston One of my neighbours has the same problem in Eumundi. Sandy Bradley We live on Sunrise Rd and have been here 11 years. Telstra told us we couldn't get Adsl for 10 of those years so we spent a heap of money with ever changing technology for USB mobile devices. Then last year our phone went down and the technician couldn't fi nd our house as our address was different to their blueprint - apparently we lived a further 3kms away! Finally [found] our house and now on Adsl.
? Diane Murphy This is third world service. This is a job for Campbell Newman if he wants people to move to regional areas, his first priority should be high speed internet. So many people work from home these days the problem has to be fixed ASAP. Everyone start writing to your local and federal members plus Can Do Campbell, and give him the challenge.

Your Say Letters to The Editor. Kon Hepers and I would like to congratulate Gill Brownhill from the Eumundi Wildlife and Rehabilitation Centre on her much deserved OAM. Gill has worked for 16 years to look after and rehabilitate the birds, reptiles and mammals that every day are brought in for help. This is a remorseless job and there are two shifts. A day shift and a night shift. Gill has done them both for years. Now that the Centre has grown even larger, Gill has a marvellous team of volunteers to help her out. It is still a 24/7 concern however. Every day pathetic cases are brought in… window strikes, car hits, cat and dog attacks, fence/barb entanglements and now glass pool fence strikes. There are the feeds and the cage cleaning to be done. Also shopping and organising supplies of crickets and mealworms to feed the hungry mouths. Gill you are amazing and we congratulate you. A person who was recognised at the Eumundi Awards was Christine Hartley who also helps out at the Centre. Christine
does several shifts a week as well as helps find pink leaf tips for the possums. She is on the committee of the EHA and also does car parking for ECCO. Chris is also the President of a local Probus Club. A terrific effort Chris, Helen Hepburn Eumundi Green cover-to-cover I love the direction the Green has gone in over the past 12 months… In our household it is no longer a 20 second scan of the pages to see IF there is anything really interesting… but has become a make-a-cupof-tea-and-sit-down-to-read it; cover to cover! I love that kids from the school are involved, local makers and growers, as well as the images from locals with stories about local wildlife… it really has never been so true to our community from my perspective. Schools and Community Kids More kids for Eumundi
New preppie at North Arm
There was a record number of Prep children enrolled at Eumundi State School this year with 90 new kids as of last Friday. Principal Mick Connors and Vice Principal Mark Kross have had to find room for a whole extra class. Numbers are in fact up right across the school with 30 new children now enrolled. When asked, most preps were settling in nicely, but the biggest challenges seemed to be sitting still in class and having to wear school shoes all day.

With thousands of students heading back to school last week motorists are reminded to slow down and remain alert when driving through school zones. RACQ spokesperson Lauren Ritchie said the start of the school year could be a dangerous time on Queensland roads, especially for young children new to the school routine. “It is important to remember the reduced 40km/h speed limits in effect around schools on weekdays from 7-9am and from 2-4pm, unless otherwise signed,” Ms Ritchie said. Motorists should take extra care at children’s crossings, with many unaware of the differences in road rules to regular pedestrian crossings. “Motorists must stop for all pedestrians at school crossings and can’t legally drive on until everyone has reached the footpath,” Ms Ritchie said. Eumundi Theatre and Arts Indee Theatre John Burls
For The Indee Young Players, the youth arm of the theatre, the year ends in January, when the pantomime season finishes. This is the time when a lot of bonding between the youngsters becomes a tad teary. For some, they’re back into harness when the school term starts, for others it’s a change of pace with the rigours of high school prodding them towards an adult world. One young actor, who’s been with the group since she was seven and who’s now embarking on her second year of high school, was so feeling the coming separation that she cut short the Skipathon, which for many years has featured as the final part of the after show party. Let me tell you cutting short the Skipathon is serious business. All the youngsters take part and somehow don’t manage to see their parents when they turn up to take them home. Now with the new school term, The Indee is taking enrolments for this year’s classes. There’ll be two goals. For the musically minded, a group appearance in the Mother’s Day Super Concert and for everyone preparing for casting for roles in the September production of The Reluctant Dragon. Classes are held Thursday and Friday afternoon for the various age groups. For all details call Carol on 5472 8200 Next onstage at The Independent Theatre will be The Lux Radio Theatre production of All About Eve. It was an amazing film and an amazing radio play, both of which starred Bette Davis. If you’d like to re-live the days of live radio plays, onstage sound effects and the cast in evening wear, All About Eve, will fill the bill. One weekend only, 7.30pm Friday 4, Saturday 5 and 2pm Sunday 6 of April.
The Waste Land for iPad Duncan Sayers
Ebooks, with few exceptions, are a wasted opportunity. Constrained to mimicking real books, sometimes right down to animated page turns, they fail to make the most of the new electronic medium. Convenience is enhanced for sure, but there are big compromises: for example you don’t own eBooks purchased from the likes of Amazon. They are licensed to you for your own individual use on a particular type of device. So age-old practices such as lending and resale become difficult if not illegal, and forget about ever passing on your collection of eBooks - they’ll disappear into the ether along with their licensee. All this for an imitation of the real thing; why not just buy a book that never gets flat batteries, and won’t cause an airplane to apparently go down in a ball of flames on takeoff and landing. Touch Press have created an exception, using the electronic medium to great effect. Their treatment of T.S. Eliot’s The Waste Land in their iPad app. re-invigorates this central, post-WWI poem. It augments copies of the original text – including Ezra Pound’s hand-written commentary and edits – with recordings of readings by the likes of Alec Guinness, Viggo Mortensen, Jeremy Irons, Ted Hughes and Eliot himself. It includes a brilliant video performance by Fiona Shaw, linked footnotes, and video perspectives from the late Seamus Heaney and others. All of this additional material is synchronized to the text, along with clues to the many references Eliot sprinkles throughout the poem. The app. takes up around 1GB of space on my iPad, which seems a lot for one poem. However it is one of the 20th Century’s most important texts, and perhaps one of the most difficult. The volume of disk space used is a reflection of both the complexity of the subject, and also the attention that Touch Press has given this work. We hear the term multi-media thrown around loosely. Touch Press plus the iPad reveals its true potential. What next: Joyce’s Ulysses perhaps? If this keeps up I’m going to need a bigger iPad!

country was the original creator of this much loved dish, we can say that it is pretty impressive and tastes so good! So here’s my favourite recipe which is simple to make.
The nationality of its creator has been in dispute between the two nations for many decades. So although we may never resolve the debate of which
If you want to make this for a special Valentines Day, just mark the baking paper with a heart shape and spoon mixture to form the heart.
Perfect Pavlova
Method
Ingredients • 6 egg whites • 1 ¼ cups caster sugar • 2 teaspoons cornflour • 1 teaspoon white vinegar • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract • 300 ml thickened cream • Juice and rind of 2 lemons (use a zester or grater for the rind) • Fruit

Preheat your oven to 180°C. Line an oven tray with baking paper. Use a dinner plate to mark a circle on the baking paper. Use a clean, dry bowl and with an electric mixer, whisk egg whites until soft peaks form. Add all the sugar and continue whisking the mixture until thick and glossy and the sugar has dissolved. If there is any grittiness in the meringue mixture, you will need to keep beating until the sugar is fully dissolved. Turn the mixer up to top speed and whisk till glossy, the sugar dissolved and reaches the stage when a spoonful of meringue mixture poured back into the bowl sits on the surface like a ribbon. Add cornflour and vinegar and using a spatula, gently fold three or four times. Spoon the meringue mixture onto the marked baking paper and get it in the oven.
Turn the oven down to 120°C and cook for about 1½ hours. Remove from the oven and cool. Whisk the cream for a few minutes till soft peaks form. Add the vanilla extract and using a spoon stir into the cream. Top the pavlova with the whipped cream and then top with lashings of your favourite fruit that is mixed with the lemon juice and rind.
Don’t forget to add the passionfruit on the very top! Tips 1. Spray a little oil or a bit of melted butter on the tray so the paper stays in place when you are placing the mixture onto the baking paper. 2. Egg whites should be at room temperature and have no trace of yolk. 3. Be careful not to over whip the cream

Health My top 10 foods Nic Makim No 1 – Chia Seeds
Since much of my work centres on nutrition and health, I’m frequently asked “So, what do you eat?” Most of the time I try and eat the most nutritionally
powerful foods that will enhance my health, increase my energy levels but most importantly taste good. In saying that I am not flushed with time, reading a recipe bores me and I am useless at sticking to them anyway. So the foods I choose need to be adaptable, quick to prepare and go with whatever other juicy ingredients I can get my hands on. Chia Seeds hit the no 1 spot for me because these little beauties are a whole, raw, unprocessed, gluten-free, non-cholesterol and unrefined food. Chia seeds are packed with unsaturated omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids, the good fats! Heads up anyone with obesity, cardiovascular disease, cancer, osteoporosis, diabetes, liver degeneration, pain, inflammation, arthritis or who wants to sharpen their brain function. You need good fats in your diet. Chia Seeds are high in protein, fibre, calcium, iron, magnesium,

folate, zinc, boron, selenium, potassium, vitamins A, B’s and C. Recent research tells us that chia seeds have five times more calcium than milk. Balancing blood sugar levels and weight loss are another impressive quality because a large portion of chia's fibre is soluble. When soluble fibre reaches the stomach it forms a gel-like substance that slows food digestion, helps decrease blood-sugar levels and promotes satiety. Chia's other portion of fibre is insoluble which sweeps debris off the intestinal walls to be eliminated efficiently and regularly, which improves bowel movement and detoxification. Chia is also thought to improve hydration and help the body retain electrolytes, especially during exercise. How do I get chia seeds into my diet? Chia seeds do not have a distinct taste so you can sneak
them into any meal and give them to any fuss pot. Ideally, soak them overnight or for twenty minutes before using to increase their nutritional value. They do not need heating or cooking. At Berkelouw Café we sprinkle them on top of our smoothies, fruit salad and muesli. Whack them through salads, soups, smoothies, yoghurt, toast, scrambled eggs, omelette … Pack them into your muesli or morning breakfast cereal. The best trick of all with them is when you have to have something sweet. Know the feeling? I simply mix them with cacao nibs and forest berries. This is when chia seeds are my best friend, sweet hit done and dusted. Hit us up at Berkelouw Café if you would like a bag of chia seeds or cacao nibs.

Alcohol’s effect on digestive tract lining and blood sugar levels Drinking alcohol on an empty stomach has many ill effects on our body. When we go out for dinner, the first thing we order is our glass of wine or preferred drink. By the time we order our meals, our blood sugar levels are fluctuating considerably and we are ravenous, usually causing us to over-order on food and crave more sugary alcohol to keep us going, so in essence we drink (and eat) more than we planned to, usually resulting in a hangover. Alcohol irritates and damages our stomach lining so drinking before we eat is not good for our digestive system. According to the CHEK Institute, if we drink alcohol, we should consume some fat and protein with it or preferably beforehand (such as cheese or fatty salmon) to help with the blood sugar level fluctuations and stop us causing as much damage to our stomach lining. So next time you are having a glass of wine or beer, try eating first, you will actually find that you will drink less for all of the above reasons! www.lucycloonanfitness.com

Environment and Outdoors Life on a better ridge Claudette Betteridge With the children back at school and the new year now in full swing, we can once again turn our attention to jobs other than building sand pits and balance ropes. No longer do we have the blissful excuse of a trip to the river or a lazy day of chasing the breeze with the company of a good book. With the heat still beating down and the big rains just hinting at their imminence, there is much to be done to make the most of what our Queensland summers bring. In the eternal quest to use what we grow, the vetiver grass clumps are once again being harvested and the many lemongrass are having their quarterly haircuts. Some of these fibres have been "chopped and dropped" as mulch while much of it has been painstakingly bundled and prepared for basket making and thatching. The grass clumps that seem to be outgrowing their positions are dug out and separated and have been planted as individual stalks around the uphill side of garden beds. This will slow down the inevitable watershed that comes with a month's worth of rain that falls in a torrential, deafening
afternoon around these parts, and forms a protective barrier around the more fragile plants within the beds. As they (very rapidly) grow, their roots multiply, spread and mingle with each other forming a great soak or sponge that will slowly release the water and nourish the other plants long after the rains have gone. Apart from the abundance of useful grasses, this time of year brings many more rewards here on the ridge. We have been enjoying a plentiful supply of lychees, bananas, passion fruit and cherry guavas and have a lemon tree I'm sure I can hear groaning under the weight of its bounty. And then there are the salad greens. If there's one thing that hot, wet summers bring us in abundance, it's the ability to grow salad greens (especially any from tropical climates). So as I reach for another basket to gather up the day's harvest and wander past the evidence school holidays have left behind (recalling the noise and ceaseless activity it brought with it) I'm mentally preparing my next salad and keeping a keen eye out for a fitting place to hang a hammock.
Dragonfruit (Hylocereus) Annie Wilson About five years ago, I was given a few segments of this amazing plant Dragonfruit (Hylocereus). Over the years it has grown steadily, rambling over a large rock in our driveway, but alas with no signs of flowers or precious fruit. Belonging to the cactus family, there are numerous varieties of this interesting plant and I wondered if we might have got a non-fruiting one. But this year we've seen its first two flowers, and I'm really excited that there may be fruit to follow too. Bees love the large flowers, about 20 to 30cm, but like some other cactus, flowers last only one night - and until about 10am if it's a cloudy morning. The fruit can have red or yellow skin, and the flesh may be white, red, or purple with many small soft seeds, similar to kiwi fruit. Usually the fruit sets about 10 days after the flower finishes, but there's no sign of it yet. I'll keep you posted.

Only about 5per cent of fungi produce fruiting bodies that are large enough to be seen by humans. There are least 250,000 species of fungi in Australia, many of which live underground forming a labyrinth beneath our forests and farmland. All fungi play an important role in the recycling of debris, leaf litter and old fallen trees returning these nutrients back into the soil where they are taken up by plants. Many plants will only grow if they have their own private fungi in attendance. Several orchids are in this situation. The two jelly photos I have submitted appeared in our garden this winter. The white one is commonly seen and is Tremella fuciforis . This is a very primitive jelly fungus and can be seen emerging from rotting trees or logs. The pretty yellow jelly fungus is also a Tremella and

appeared near some Lomandras emerging directly out of the soil but maybe there are some old tree roots underneath that the fungus is feeding on. Some jellies are very colourful and resemble coral. All jelly fungus have a high water content and yes they are wobbly. I would never recommend any fungus be eaten or even handled. Just look, admire and enjoy.

Gardening How to grow frangipani from cuttings too much water as frangipani cuttings will rot if the mixture stays too moist. Firm the mix around the cutting and place the pot in a warm, wind-sheltered spot. Water after potting and don’t water again until new leaves appear. Then water the container every three to four days, until the roots have started to establish themselves. The frangipani, Plumeria rubra has a lovely, aromatic flower we in the tropics and subtropics often take for granted. Propagating frangipani is simple and you can grow your own tree using a cutting of any size, or even a fallen branch. The cuttings are quite resilient and can even withstand drought and neglect. You can do this at any time but the ideal time to take cuttings is just as the trees are coming out of dormancy – in late winter or early spring.
Place your pot in an area that gets full to partial sun. Being quite drought tolerant, mature frangipanis will be able to tough it out if soil is dry for days or even weeks. However, young plants need watering weekly in dry weather until established. If you decide to transplant the cutting, remember the roots are very brittle. Gently remove from the pot and transplant into well drained soil and place in a sunny spot.
Small cutting
Large cutting
Pick a healthy branch and saw off a piece up to 300mm long. Remove any leaves and flower buds, then leave the cutting in a shady spot for around 14 days, exposed to air to dry out. This is gives time for the cut ends to heal over. Plant the cuttings directly in the ground or pot into a sandy, free-draining potting mix, or make your own mix by combining three-parts perlite to one-part peat moss. Just ensure the soil you use has good drainage and won't retain
For cuttings up to 2m long, remove any branches from the main stem, then scrape vertically around one end of the stem with a blade. This exposes the cambium (the green layer) and can help with callus formation. You should then leave the cutting for two weeks to develop a callus, then plant the wounded end of the stem into at least 60cm of well-drained soil. Stake the cutting to prevent rocking, then remove the stake when established.

Eumundi Abroad Carnarvon Gorge Babette Urban Australian bustards, and families of wild pigs). Rangers at the Carnarvon Gorge Visitor Area provided me with information and maps of the walking tracks … and they assured me they would come looking for me if there was a car left in the car park at the end of the day.
I heard about this oasis in the heart of central Queensland many years ago and have always wanted to go there. I finally decided to bite the bullet and stop procrastinating … before my knees were too old to go the distance. The road to Carnarvon National Park turns off from the Carnarvon Highway between Roma to the south and Rolleston to the north. The road winds between properties with paddocks divided by cattle grids, and a variety of animals other than stock can also be seen (I spied echidnas, emus, kangaroos and wallabies, brolgas,
I set off along the Main Track which winds almost 10km along Carnarvon Creek and ends at Big Bend. The gorge, which is flanked by steep-sided white sandstone cliffs, is lush with tropical vegetation mixed with eucalypts. The creek is full of large round boulders which I had to balance my way across numerous times. Side tracks took me to a variety of special features within the gorge, each very different from the others. There was the Art Gallery, Amphitheatre, Ward’s Canyon, Moss Gardens, Boolimba Bluff, Cathedral and more … all beautiful little surprises of nature. Just outside of the gorge is the Rock Pool which was the perfect spot for a refreshing swim after a long hot trek.
