 Market stallholders recently made a citizen’s arrest of a bag snatcher.  John the butcher needs a bigger shop.  Local dogs have been going missing in the middle of the day from fenced properties.  It’d be great if Eumundi had a piazza on Memorial Drive.  This time last year we were getting over the flooding.  None of our local fire stations are closing.

The Double Happiness Acupuncture and Wellness Centre opened on Cash Rd in Eumundi recently. The team (from left) are: Cynamon Thomas who is an osteopath, remedial masseuse and naturopath; Jodie Mudgeway who’s trained as a zen thai shiatsu body worker; Emma Iwinska who specialises in acupuncture, chinese medical herbalist and is a fertility management practitioner and Lauren Gray the practice manager. The Fig Tree @ Eumundi can be found on Memorial Dr fronting onto the main street and backing directly onto the markets at the rear. We are open for breakfast and lunch and anything inbetween! Q: How long have you been in business in Eumundi?

We started in October 2009.

Q: What made you choose Eumundi to base your business?

Eumundi is a fabulous, friendly market town with great people and we saw the opening for a high quality reasonably priced eating venue in a relaxed atmosphere.

Q: What is the best thing about working here?

Definitely the people, so welcoming and friendly!

Q: What is the worst thing you’ve found about working here?

Being from England originally we both struggle with the heat, but it is better than the grey skies and rain we were used to!

Q: What would you like to see change in our business district?

More people coming to Eumundi to enjoy the wonderful diversity and quality of the local businesses.

I recently spent two whole days attempting to recover data from a new client’s nine year old server which died the previous day. They had a supposedly redundant set of drives configured, but it broke and they had a backup that hadn’t run in three months and nobody knew.

After many attempts to recover their data with various tools, late at night I successfully managed to get all the data off the faulty server. I can’t tell you how lucky they were to have a good result and a downtime and recovery cost so much less than what it might have been.

All of this time and money could have been saved if they had a simple daily backup notification that just sent them an email each time the backup ran and advised them of its success. The same goes for everyone at home as well! Backup drives are dirt cheap and there are any number of free backup programs which will tell you if the backup worked. I use Cobian Backup myself which allows quick access to your files by simply plugging the drive into another computer. The built-in Windows 7 backup is good too. The Windows 8 backup is rubbish (no surprises there). So stop right now and if you don’t have a backup then go and sort it out!

Closing date for applications 12 March 2014 Mieke Fortune opened her business Fortune Sprout Fed Beef in 2004. The North Arm property sells beef directly to the public and this is the first season that the farm has produced Ultra Black cattle for sale at the farm door. Two years ago Mieke introduced this new stud herd of Tropical Angus or Ultra Black cattle as they are well suited to the subtropical conditions here on the Sunshine Coast. Beef producers grapple with many challenges in this region such as; ticks, flies and the wet and poor grass quality. The farm is currently biodynamic and in the process of getting organic certification.

Tony Fischer turned his childhood passion for collecting vintage toys into his business 22 years ago. He now has a very successful business online, a VIP toystore in Mudjimba (open by appointment only) and recently opened a new store at the Eumundi Square Markets that’s open Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays. Tin lunch boxes from the 60’s and 70’s, yoyos, super hero figurines, movie memorabilia and vintage and newer collectable Lego sets, are some of his specialties.

Community News Councillor Rogerson update A number of exciting upgrades to outdoor recreation areas in and around Eumundi are taking shape.

Concept and detailed designs for landscaping and parkland works are underway for Dick Caplick Park on Eumundi Memorial Drive. This includes some great upgrades and renewals to the playground.

Design work and planning is expected to be wrapped up by May and work is expected to begin shortly afterwards.

Similar design works are currently happening for the PIP Trails, Eumundi Recreation Trail, Eumundi Town Circuit and connection trail. Preliminary planning is underway on site and route investigations are progressing and should be finished by May. Survey, planning and design works for the Eumundi Terraces at the markets is also on in earnest. When complete, this will be presented to key local stakeholders for signoff before any on-ground works commence.

Tree removal above board Recently there was some angst circulating around town in regards to the removal of a tree at 110 Estate in Eumundi.

While felling trees is always considered a last resort for me, in this particular case there was a legitimate and legal reason behind the actions.

Council regulates vegetation removal (plants and trees) from

private property and it is an offence to damage or remove protected trees and plants on private property. This particular tree was cleared legally and a permit was not required under the Temporary Local Planning Instrument – Vegetation Protection Overlay 2013.

Grants up for grabs Local not-for-profit groups may be eligible for funding through Council’s Community Grants program, to help with their latest event, project or activity.

Applications close March 14 so make sure you check out Council’s website for details.

Important changes to libraries If you use the Noosaville, Cooroy or Mobile Libraries, changes will be happening to your library service. From late March you will only be able to drop off Noosa Libraries items to the Noosa Libraries, and Sunshine Coast Libraries items to their libraries.

During this final phase of separation from Sunshine Coast Libraries patrons will receive a new Noosa Library Service card when visiting one of the libraries. You will only be able to use this card in these libraries. All membership benefits will remain the same as

before – you can still borrow up to 30 items for three weeks, and you will be able to pick-up and drop off items from the Noosa Libraries collection at Cooroy, Noosaville or the Mobile Library.

It is important that you check your details are correct either online or when next at the library, to ensure that you and your family are transferred over as Noosa library members. Eumundi was proud to host this year’s Sunshine Coast Pride day recently at the Original Eumundi Markets. The atmosphere was relaxed, family friendly and full of colourful stalls and performances. The event kicked off with the Dykes on Bikes motorcycle club, followed by roller-derby chicks Coastal Assassins. Organisers said numbers were up on the previous year’s event and were very happy with the turn-out. The event that celebrated diversity brought many visitrs from Brisbane to the region for the weekend.

Community News EDV Residents re-group for action!

In 2006 the Eumundi Doonan Verrierdale (EDV) residents group doorknocked every residence in Doonan, Eumundi, Verrierdale and Weyba Downs, and found more than 82 per cent of all local residents and 85 per cent of businesses, expressed support for a boundary change to become part of Noosa. A strong connection with the Noosa Shire was also expressed. It was found that the majority of EDV residents went to Noosa, Cooroy, Noosaville and Tewantin to shop, to bank, to the movies, to the beach, to visit the doctor or the dentist or simply go to the library.

Now that Noosa has de-amalgamated, EDV are wanting to start a new conversation about a boundary change amongst local residents. Over the past eight years many new people have moved to the area and know little of the history of EDV’s boundary re-alignment ambitions and have only known residency of the Sunshine Coast Council.

The Minister for Local Government, David Crisafulli recently visited the newly de-amalgamated Councils of Noosa, Livingston, Mareeba and Douglas and listed possible boundary changes (as well as planning decisions such as height restrictions, and infrastructure upgrades) “as some of the pressing issues that new councils would have to prioritise,” he said.

Should there be strong majority support to become part of Noosa Shire shown by the community for a new Noosa Shire new boundary that includes Eumundi, Doonan, Verrierdale and Weyba Downs, EDV says it will be crucial to act quickly and gather evidence and information. This will ensure the Local Government Minister has support material for his referral of the boundary change to the Boundaries Commissioner.

In coming weeks EDV will be conducting a mini road show to start a conversation with and between residents about a possible boundary change and its effect on the community. To find out more contact EDV president Johanne Wright edv@westnet.com.au

No change in sight for abandoned butter factory A 12 month extension has been granted by the Sunshine Coast Council to the receiver overseeing the Eumundi Butter Factory development at the top of Memorial Dr. Chartered accountants Grant Thornton Australia Ltd who are acting as the receiver and property manager for TLC Prestige Developments, received an extension to answer a range of development issues facing the property. The company have completed an inspection of the site and appointed an agent in anticipation of commencing a sale campaign of the properties in the coming weeks. Council agreed to a development extension until January 2015, but stated this would be the final extension. Council informed that the application would lapse if there was no response to the information request by this date.

In December 2012 TLC Prestige Developments submitted a $50 million revamp application for the old factory precinct, but the then council issued preliminary advice stating most of the site was zoned "neighbourhood residential" and not appropriate for commercial use.

A secret judging committee has declared that the hanging baskets in front of the Bottle Shop are the best presented in Memorial Dr as at the start of autumn and earn for their owners a $40 floral presentation.

The judges said that most of the hanging baskets are in good shape considering the tough summer conditions so well done and please keep up the watering and tidying.

This ECCO streetscaping initiative has received much positive comment from visitors and locals. The judging committee will be on the lookout over the next few months to award a small presentation for a winter best presentation.

As thousands of Australians joined candlelight vigils around the country, a small group gathered in Ceylon Rd, Eerwah Vale to add their light. Our group decided not to dwell on politics or negativity, but to stay focused on a positive outcome

for all asylum seekers, coming to Australia for refuge. We felt that all of us forget how fortunate we are in this country with food, clean water, houses, transport, and great freedom. We are the lucky minority, so many people around the world live with suffering and fear every day. It is our duty, in our privileged position, to help others. The solution that we jointly wished for, was that things would improve so much in their own countries, that they could live there happily, safely and not feel the need to flee. We focused our energy on sending joy to people all over the world.

Community News Shave for a leukemia cure Eumundi local Aleta Bon will be shaving off her luscious locks on Wednesday 12 March for the Leukemia Foundation’s Shave for a Cure, Brave Shave morning tea at Pomona Community House, 9.30 - 11am. The mum of two says she’s been thinking of doing this for a very long time to offer some support for

families who have spent far too much time in hospitals battling for their child’s life. “There are families that have to watch their babies being put through so much to try and save their life or give them a better quality of life. My hair is such a small thing to give up in comparison.”

Eumundi Town Walk comes to life A project bringing alive the history behind a number of buildings and iconic sites in Eumundi and projecting it into the future using the latest technologies, has been completed by Discover Eumundi Heritage and Visitor Centre (DE).

Using funds from a Regional Arts Development Fund (RADF) grant, DE was able to collaborate with radio producer and oral historian, Hamish Sewell to interview many local people and record their stories.

Eumundi Netball had their sign on 13 February and had enough girls register to enter two teams in the Noosa Netball Association Saturday Winter Competition.

Training is held every Thursday afternoon at the Eumundi School.

They have girls from year 5 through to year 8 and all are attending or have attended Eumundi School and all share the love of netball. The competition will start with grading games on 15 March with the first fixture game and the annual March Pass on 5 April. Schools and Community Kids Eumundi swim team invades Tin Can Bay Alasdair Scott coach, enjoying a fantastic day of swimming and a great community day out.

At the recent Cooloola Crocs’ Swim Carnival , visitors to Tin Can Bay could have been forgiven for thinking they were in Eumundi. The carnival was dominated by swimmers from the Eumundi Swim club, with

pool records being smashed by various individuals and the relay teams. Almost the entire club’s membership was in attendance at this popular carnival. Thirty-eight swimmers and their families travelled by

There were so many highlights in the day, with several of the club’s younger swimmers participating in their first carnival, a plethora of personal best times, age champions and eight relay teams representing the club! From start to finish, the swimmers were roared on by enthusiastic and vocal Eumundi supporters, and they all responded in style.

The children did manage to conserve some energy for the bus ride home, but all would have slept well that night!

A big thanks to club president, Oddbjorn Ludvigsen and secretary Hayley Lewis for organizing the day and to coach Richard McLean, who was justly proud of all of the swimmers.

The “fun” carnival was in contrast to the week before, with the serious business of swimming at the Queensland Sprint Championships in Brisbane. All fifteen of the Eumundi swimmers managed a personal best in at least one of their events. Fitness is certainly coming to the fore now, with most swimmers recording personal best times (PBs) at Swim club on Thursday nights.

The Original Eumundi Markets is making a mark The Original Eumundi Markets joined the Australian Made Campaign as a Campaign Associate recently to help enforce the market’s image as Australia’s largest premier craft market for locally made and grown products and produce.

Movies and Books Kate Atkinson: a writer I can recommend Judith Pattison Kate Atkinson is the first author in my newly alphabetised book shelves. (Now I just have to keep it up!) Her books include Behind the Scenes at the Museum (1995) her first novel and winner of the 1995 Whitbread Prize (now the Costa Book Awards), Human Croquet (1997), Emotionally Weird (2000), the Jackson Brodie detective series: Case Histories (2004) One Good Turn (2006), When Will There Be Good News? ( 2008) and Started Early, Took My Dog (2010).

The Jackson Brodie novels have been adapted for the BBC as the series Case Histories. Atkinson’s latest, Life After Life (2013) just won the best novel award at the

Costa Book Awards, nearly 20 years after Behind the Scenes at the Museum. My Atkinson favourite is Case Histories even though Behind the Scenes at the Museum is possibly a better book.

Case Histories is finely crafted literature that reads like a really good crime novel. What I like and what drives me a little crazy about her books are sometimes the same things: complicated, surreal interconnecting plot lines and characters (dogs and children abound!) mean it can be hard to follow the threads, especially when the books are in a sequence. An over abundance of tragedies in families with the most

terrifyingly bad luck is somehow mitigated by the overall tone and her ironic sense of humour, in the fine tradition of Fay Weldon and Hilary Mantel. For instance, “Courtney was astonishingly reckless. A kid without reck was a dangerous thing” and “some women were destined for widowhood, marriage was just the obstacle in their way.”

A Guardian review says it best, “The narrative insouciance makes calamities tragi-comic. For while the characters may be mystified by events, the narrator always knows.”

Following the 1979 -1989 Soviet invasion of Afghanistan, the US backed mujahidin formed an Islamic Emirate from 1996 until 2001 when US forces overthrew them. This film’s timeframe is in the early days of the Taliban government. Women are not allowed to work and may only go out accompanied by a male relative. Following the war deaths of their family men, a young girl, her mother and grandmother are desperate.The mother and grandmother make the only decision they can to survive: their preteen daughter must disguise

herself as a boy so that she can get a job to support the family.

The daughter agrees despite being afraid that the Taliban will kill her if discovered. Only two people outside the family know: the milk vendor who employs the girl and a local boy named Espandi. Espandi renames her Osama. The Taliban recruit all the local boys for school, where they are taught the Koran and how to fight. The teaching of ablutions is taught, which Osama avoids joining, and the teacher grows suspicious. The other boys pick on her and finally her secret

Noosa Music offers innovative musical genius Amanda Cole, MMus, BMus, Dip ModLang, Churchill Fellow Who would have thought, moving to the Sunshine Coast as I did last year, that amongst such natural beauty and so far from major cultural centres, one could still be treated to the kind of concert that Noosa Music provided last night? Only rarely do concerts of such originality and sheer brilliance take place even in the major cultural centres of the world such as London, New York and Paris, let alone in regional coastal centres like Noosaville. Genevieve Lacey, an internationally acclaimed recorder player, has teamed up with James Crabb, an equally illustrious classical accordion player, to give audiences an experience of innovative musical genius.

The concert opened before we saw the performers, the sound emerging from backstage only to be followed a second later by the sauntering James Crabb on the accordion and the elfin Lacey, who managed– curiously–a smile and warm welcome to the audience. How she manages to do this while playing the recorder is anyone’s guess but probably comes at least in part from her overall intention.

The new duo’s debut recital was beautifully balanced and varied. From the Spanish street music of the sixteenth century (Ortiz) we moved through arranged duets of Palestrina and Rognoni to a recorder concerto

by Sammartini in which Crabb took on the role of the entire orchestra. From here he took us to a contemporary Finnish composition for solo accordion.

four haunting “Children’s Songs” by Chick Corea, a modern jazz composer, and a suite of dances by the sixteenth century melancholic Matthew Locke. After interval we were treated to a sublimely executed Bach sonata with Crabb again acting as the orchestra and Lacey playing various members of her recorder family. Three short contemporary Australian pieces commissioned by Lacey for her recent Peggy GlanvilleHicks lecture were varied and expressive. We were then treated to a short oral history of the classical accordion given

by Crabb with much humour and many musical examples.

Perhaps the crowning glory came at the end with two superb Scottish folk songs arranged

by Crabb himself for recorder and accordion which left the audience all but dancing in the aisles–quite an achievement for a duo of unamplified instruments in a small regional chapel.

Not only have Lacey and Crabb mastered the technical intricacies and demands of their instruments, reached lofty heights of musicianship and ensemble playing, but they have mastered that rare thing in classical music, the art of performance. Let’s hope that Noosa Music gets the support it needs to stay afloat and to keep inspiring Sunshine Coast residents with its fabulous programming and world class offerings.

One month away to staging the outstanding radio drama, All About Eve. This showbiz story is now considered a classic movie, having garnered fourteen Academy Award nominations, winning six and being still the only film in the Awards history to receive four nominations for four female actors in the one film.

The Independent Theatre cast includes Carol Hoger in the Bette Davis role with Eddie Ellis, Carol Burls, Richard Luscombe, Janine Bryce, Rita Walker and John Burls filling out the other parts. The All About Eve, Lux Radio Theatre weekend, will be at 7.30pm Friday 4 April and Saturday 5 April plus 2pm Sunday 6 April.

Actor Bette Davis, on the comeback trail after a career slump, starred in both the film and the subsequent radio play. It was an excellent plot that’s since been copied many times.

Food Let's get fancy! Alain Bouvier Turn your tv on - food is fashion, and cooking shows are everywhere.

These exotic, fancy, mouthwatering recipes need to match our "on the go" lifestyles. These days it is common to have recipes that are made of very few ingredients, bought from

one big shop, made of a few steps and ready in a few blinks.

Now turn your tv off and come and enjoy your cooking with me.

Pour a glass of wine, play some music and, most importantly, take your time. My recipes are simple, made of a few ingredients (more than four),

and only need a few steps. I use locally sourced produce: my local butcher down my street, the local organic vegie stall at Doonan, and the Cooroy IGA. Part of the enjoyable process of cooking for me is meeting people, asking questions, getting advice, and enjoying

the social aspect of knowing my local suppliers. I came up with this dish from the seasonal vegetables I sourced locally, from what my butcher suggested to me, and now I know what I would like to cook, I just need to pick up the missing bits from the closest grocery store, and am ready to start.

Marinated spatchcock with creamy polenta and sautéed zucchini.

Sautéed zucchini • 1 medium brown onion • 4 medium zucchini • 2 swiss brown mushrooms • 2 tbsp of olive oil • 2 small purple garlic cloves • A bunch of rosemary • Parsley • Salt and pepper Wash all vegetables and slice thinly. Crush the garlic bulb and separate the cloves but leave the skin on. In a large saucepan heat the oil over medium-high heat. Stir in the onions until they start to soften (a couple minutes).

Add the garlic, quickly stirring until the onions have a hint of colour. Add the zucchini and the rosemary, dial the heat up a bit, add a pinch of salt, and keep stirring occasionally for 2-3 mins. Add the mushrooms, keep stirring until the zucchini softens. Remove from heat, taste, and adjust the seasoning if necessary.

Marinated spatchcock • 4 spatchcock, 500g each • 8 slices of prosciutto or aged Spanish ham Marinade • juice of 2 lemons • 1tsp fresh thyme leaves • 2 tsp fresh grated turmeric • 2 tsp fresh grated ginger • 4 tbs olive oil • cracked pepper to taste Place the marinade ingredients in a blender, process until smooth. Place the small chicken in a large bowl, and cover with marinade. Gently turn to coat with marinade.

Cover. Refrigerate for 30 minutes. Preheat the oven at 180ºC. In large oven tray place the 4 spatchcocks, pour some marinade over them and roast for 15 mins.

Take the spatchcocks out and cover them with 2 slices of ham. Put the spatchcocks back in the oven, at 180ºC for 30 mins. Occasionally pour a little of the juice on the ham to avoid it burning.

…while the spatchcock are roasting cook the polenta: Creamy polenta topped with roasted hazelnuts • 150ml milk • 600ml water • ½ tsp salt • 150g coarse cornmeal • 50g butter • 25g grated parmesan In a large heavy-based pan, bring milk, water and salt to the boil.

Add cornmeal to the boiling liquid, whisking continuously. Stir for a minute until it thickens. Turn heat right down and stir well to prevent sticking. It will take 35-45

minutes to cook the polenta right through. If too thick, gently add some hot water. When the polenta begins to come away from the sides of the pan, stir in the butter and cheese. It’s ready to serve.

While the spatchcock are roasting, place hazelnuts (with naural shell) in baking tray until the skins crack and nut turn a light golden. Remove and put in a clean tea towel then rub them to roughly remove skin. Chop the nuts.

Slowly reheat the zucchini and voila! - it's ready to serve.

Health Dementia We often hear the term dementia used, but may not actually understand what it means. All too often it is used as a generic term to describe any mental illness in an older person.

Alzheimer’s Australia defines dementia as a collection of symptoms caused by disorders affecting the brain, it is not one specific disease.

Dementia affects thinking, behaviour and the ability to perform everyday tasks. Brain function is affected enough to interfere with the person’s normal social or working life.

While the majority of people who suffer from dementia are over 65, not all older people will get dementia. It is not a normal part of ageing. People in their 40s and 50s can also have dementia.

There are many different forms of dementia and each has its own causes. The most common are: Alzheimer's disease, Vascular dementia, Parkinson's disease, Dementia with Lewy bodies, Fronto Temporal Lobar Degeneration (FTLD), Huntington's disease, Alcohol related dementia (Korsakoff's syndrome) and Creutzfeldt-Jacob disease.

There are also a number of conditions that produce symptoms similar to dementia:

Health and Lifestyle Alzheimer's village for Eumundi? Tania Watson, Pharmacist where people with dementia shop, cook, and live together— safely. Hogeweyk, from a certain perspective, seems like a fortress: A solid podium of apartments and buildings, closed to the outside world with gates and security fences. However inside the complex, there is a park with a pond, a long boulevard, cafÊs, restaurants, even a theatre square.

As a population, we are ageing rapidly. Alzheimer's disease currently affects around 200,000 people in Australia, however by

2050 there will be an estimated 730,000 plus people who will have dementia. According to the Alzheimer's Association, one in three seniors today dies with dementia. The process of finding (and paying for) longterm care can be very confusing and difficult for both loved ones and patients. Most carers are underpaid, overworked and drive long distances to their jobs.

However, in the Netherlands, a radical idea is being tested. Selfcontained "villages"

There is space in the village to allow people suffering from Alzheimer's to still be active.

People with the disease are often still very fit physically but have problems with memory and mental capacity. They feel disoriented and can't manage without help.

"De Hogeweyk" has 23 apartments that are no more than two storeys high and contain one double room and seven single rooms each and 152 senior citizens live there at the moment. As opposed to normal care homes, the elderly

residents share bungalows.

They can continue living in the manner they are used to there, with the necessary intensive supervision taking place behind the scenes.

Carers, who look after up to seven persons each, are integrated in the everyday life of the elderly, appearing as salespersons, housemates, staff or family members. They accompany the dementia patients wherever they go, but let them make their own decisions.

Although the patients are well looked after, they don’t feel locked in. This is directly reflected by a more positive frame of mind of the residents, which in turn has led to a drop in the medication required.

As our area grows and develops (and ages) maybe this is an idea that could be considered for the township of Eumundi.

I’m not sure at the moment, which is frying my brain more, the actual temperature registering on the gauge, the sky’s hint at a quenching storm or the Bureau’s methods of enticing us into a belief that a spot of rain might relieve the humidity. The thing that gets me almost every time is when I check the long range forecast and momentarily get excited when I see HIGH or even 90 per cent in the box marked "chance of rain." It pays to have a closer look, because what becomes apparent is the depressing realisation that in the

"rainfall amount" box, it usually says 1-5mm or worse still 0-2mm!

It’s at this time of the year the old "tank thump" becomes a part of our morning routine and we take a good long look at the washing pile to make a very educated guess about just how long we can get away without doing a load of washing, in the vain hope it will rain before clean clothes become truly necessary. The kids in all their helpful wisdom often offer to go without bathing, but as most mothers know this is just a very skilful ruse to skip a chore in favour of a little more playtime!

Mosquitos and Heartworm Dawn Herd

During the building process there are times that I have been less than grateful for my makeshift laundry and bathroom but at the moment I have renewed respect for its "outdooredness".

It’s very easy, when there is limited plumbing to whisk water off to the septic tank, to collect washing machine waste water in large buckets and deliver it to the gasping garden beds that need it most. Admittedly this isn’t quite the grey-water diversion I have in mind for the new house, but is probably more effective with its timing and accuracy. When I’m in the "praying for precipitation" mode I’m reminded of the small jobs that can be done now to get the most out of any rain that does come. Although it seems such a short time since we did this last, it’s good to take another look at the gutters.

That wind that sucked the moisture from our soil brought with it a lot of leaves and debris and the last thing we want is to inhibit the flow of the precious few drops that do fall. Cleaning the screens on any downpipe leaf traps is also a good idea., The

dust that has come with the winds is better rinsed into a thirsty pot plant than washed into your tank by the first storm. If the morning "tank thump" leaves you feeling hollow and empty and you are lucky enough to have more than one reservoir, it might be a good time to consider cleaning them out. This can be a reasonably easy DIY job in which you first siphon your water supply into one of the tanks, leaving a little in the bottom and then drain or siphon out what remains (along with any debris) and use this to give the garden a good water. If you’re not up to doing this yourself there are a number of local tank cleaners and water suppliers that will do it for you with the promise of minimal water loss. This is also a good time to double check things like raincoats and umbrellas and to get your gumboots out of the back of the cupboard in readiness for the rains.

If that doesn’t open the skies up, then perhaps we could all go out and wash our cars in unison or organise a community rain dance, with all proceeds going toward topping up the emptiest of tanks.

In times of rain and increased water standing around, favourable conditions are created for mosquitos to breed. This increase in mozzie numbers poses a potential health threat to our beloved pets. The main disease transmitted by mosquitoes in this area is heartworm.

Heartworm is spread through mosquitos that carry the infective heartworm larvae that they have picked up from an infected animal.

In dogs bitten by an infected mosquito, the larvae migrate from the bite wound through thedog’s body until they reach the heart and blood vessels of the lungs.

Here they can cause symptoms such as coughing, exercise intolerance, fainting spells and in severe cases heart failure. A blood test is required to diagnose 18

Heartworm disease in dogs is preventable with the administration of medication as recommended by a veterinarian.

For those dogs that do contract heartworm disease, the prognosis is good for mild to moderate cases. Dogs with more severe cases may suffer from lung complications resulting from the extreme medication administered to kill serious infestations.

Cats can also contract heartworm disease from infected mosquitoes with outdoor cats at greater risk. Signs of heartworm disease include coughing, laboured raspy breathing and vomiting.

Diagnosis is more difficult in cats.

Normally blood tests with x-rays and an ECG will give an answer.

Treatment varies with each case but may involve surgery or medications.

Hinterland Feijoas farm door in Belli Park opened to the public last weekend and sold out of their picked fruit before they’d even hung out their “open” shingle. But owners Sally Hookey and Peter Heineger (pictured) promised there was more much fruit to come. “It's just the beginning of a wonderful few months,” Sally said.

Please remember that heartworm disease is avoidable and there are a number of effective preventatives available so please discuss this with your veterinarian.

The drought has definitely affected the farm though and the couple have been irrigating since August, and are down to their last quarter of dam water. But Sally said this should see them

through the season, so they feel really blessed compared to many other farmers in our district.

Sally shared, “The upside is the fruit is really tasty and concentrated, and is ripening more evenly, so we are hoping for a longer season, but probably slightly less fruit overall than last year.” Along with finding fresh fruit at Hinterland Feijoas, local chef and fellow Belli Park produce farmer Peter Wolfe, has been working round the clock making jams and chutneys for Hinterland Feijoas. www.hinterlandfeijoas.com.au Thursday 6 March 2014

Nature Notes Lose one Pee Wee – then gain four (plus one Friarbird) Helen Hepburn When I wrote my December Nature Notes, I’d been given custody of a Pee Wee I called Weezy from the Eumundi Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre.

She was a release bird and Gill thought I’d be able to give her what is called a “soft release” meaning that she would be supplementary fed till she became established and found her own territory. Weezy was doing really well over the six weeks she had been with us. She had started asserting herself, seeing off kookaburras and going to neighbours to forage for food and only returning here for feed top ups several times a day. Fly in...fly out as it were.

Well, sadly Weezy was taken by a Grey Goshawk soon into January. It was a very sad time as she had lots of personality and we miss her presence. For several days I wondered how I could have protected her, but realised that there was nothing I could have done given the quick and devastating attack.

Grey Goshawks are listed as rare, uncommon, are totally protected and, like all birds of prey, have to eat to survive.

A week later I had a call from the Centre to ask if I could take four new Pee Wees. My heart said no, but, my head said yep…it’s the best option for these birds to have a good chance of survival.

When I went to collect the Pee Wees, I was also asked to take a noisy Friarbird (Philemon corniculatuc) also known as a” Leatherhead”. Three of the Pee Wees are siblings and have been brought up from chick hood at the Centre whilst the other Pee Wee was brought to the Centre from another source.

They have all settled in well, and, just like Weezy, are being supplementary fed till the rains come and insects and worms etc become more plentiful. The Friarbird has been lucky, as the flooded gums and euodias are in full flower and though it comes for some shredded beef most days, I know it’s doing well for itself and adapting to the wild.

For the first couple of days the Friarbird was given some "wet mix" which is a high protein mix that is mixed with some water to provide a nutritious nectar replacement formula. In

the accompanying photo, the Friarbird is having some wet mix from an eggcup set in another container to stop pesky ants.

The Friarbird has an advantage over the Pee Wees in that it may well become a member of a passing flock and will disperse to new feeding grounds.

Friarbirds are birds of the forest canopy and feed on blossoms and the insects that gather

around the blossoms. Whilst not a particularly handsome bird it has a lot of personality and is very gentle whilst taking meat from my fingers. It’s the first time I’ve had an up close and personal interaction with these birds and it’s been a very interesting time.

I can only hope the Goshawk has moved to another feeding area!

Gardening The red tomato is getting angrier and healthier it seems Matt Popplewell It seems these days that every time we go to the Garden Centre, the fruit or vegie we have grown to know and love has gone through a change in its wardrobe. The days of the exclusive red tomato have gone and carrots and cauliflowers amongst others are having a change of dress sense.

So as scientists plough through their next idea, we have health benefits thrown into the latest idea, which as it happens is becoming far more than just that.

We welcome the arrival of the Purple tomato. For many, the idea of such genetic modification in our fruit and vegies does indeed go down like a rotten fruit off the tree but few can argue the benefits and it might even encourage our green and red food repulsed

children to tuck it in along with the chicken and bread.

So folks, what do you get when you cross a tomato with a snapdragon? (No, that’s not an angry serpent but a colourful bedding plant), well the answer is a cancer-fighting fruit, according to scientists.

There is now large-scale production of this genetically modified purple tomato under way in Canada, where the batches of purple tomato juice are ready for shipping and arrival on our shores. The idea and concept was first developed in England, the key element being the dark pigment anthocyanin.

The aim being to give the tomatoes the same potential health benefits as antioxidantrich blueberries. The tomatoes are developed in the hope we will see the nutritional value of

other everyday items boosted, such as tomato sauce.

The purple pigment is the result of the transfer of a gene from a snapdragon plant, which allows the anthocyanin to develop. The aim is to use the juice in research to conduct a wide range of tests including examining whether the

anthocyanin has positive effects on humans. Earlier studies showed benefits as an anti-inflammatory and in slowing cancers in mice and as we all know, the blueberry and cranberry is already never far from our list of favourite juices.

Perhaps the Purple tom could be in vogue next?

Echeveria Annie Wilson

Another of my favourite succulent plants is the echeveria. I like to call them hug plants, because they usually produce a flower stalk from each side of the rosette which resemble two little arms reaching out for a hug. There are many varieties of this pretty plant, with numerous different leaf and flower colours. The Black Prince is a very dark variety with lime coloured variegation. 'Topsy Turvy' is an unusual shaped, pale grey/green variety. There are also many shades of green, as well as red, purple and orange varieties. Rosettes can be a tiny two centimetres in diameter, but some mature varieties can grow up to a massive 50 centimetres 20

across. There are also oddlooking crested variants. The leaves are most colourful in the cooler months, and in spring and summer delicate bell-shaped flowers emerge from long, slender stalks.

Echeveria are mostly summer growers, but do need some protection from the hot summer sun. Once they are established echeveria require very little water, and continue to multiply and flower with minimal attention. I have found the small leaves on the flower stalk are very good for propagating, with a high strike rate and faster growing than other leaf cuttings. Before the flower

stalk drys out these leaves can be removed and each will produce a new plant. If you don't remove them they'll often drop into the soil beneath the plant and grow anyway. Aphids and mealy bugs can be a problem, but keeping plants clear of leaf debris that allows good air flow does help.

Heritage Sculpture of many names… Wendy Birrell and for many the name has stuck to this day.

Outside Discover Eumundi is a sculpture created in 1988 paying tribute to the ‘Timber Getters of the Eumundi and Kenilworth District for their part in Eumundi’s early history’.

Damaged by vandals it had a wooden crate put around it, reminiscent of the way precious museum items are transported and stored, until a way of replacing it could be found.

For many years this iconic statue stood high on a sculpted "springboard" attached to a tall pole in Caplick Park (which was named after a Eumundi tree feller – Dick Caplick).

The statue, not of Dick Caplick, may have been modelled on him.

Locals liked to call it Dick Caplick

Also called the tree feller, the Eumundi axeman and in a letter from Dick Caplick’s son Allan in 2007 the "Springboard man".

Whatever you call it, it was produced as a memorial to the men who braved and also lost their lives to cut down the tall timber abundant in the area.

Many Eumundi buildings and houses were built from such timber and much of it was milled in Etheridge’s Sawmill, located where Caplick Park is now.

The statue made of wire frame with concrete render, painted in a bronze patina was removed

by Council from Caplick Park as a public liability risk. It was starting to degrade and they feared it might fall. It made its way to Discover Eumundi where it was repaired by a sculptor who wrote in his repair quote that the sculpture was "very fragile".

After the more recent vandalism it was inspected by a professional sculptor with over 30years experience who reported "the

statue has been damaged to such an extent that the restoration of its actual structural integrity in now in doubt".

The metal inside was badly rusted and the concrete was crumbling to an extent that it was not viable to repair. The arm and the axe had been also been smashed and the metal rods inside badly bent.

Great news at last though, as three years on with a successful grant application secured and major funding for a sculpture prize from Eumundi Combined Community Organisation’s street scaping improvement project, Eumundi will again have a tribute to the Timber Getters of Eumundi. More news soon…
