Eumundi needs more public art. Oople on Memorial Dr is closing down – hopefully opening in a market space though. If you want to see things change, then volunteer to help. In a couple of weeks Tina Cooper is starting work on a new collection of seahorses and orbs for ashes. The impending new tapas bar has been given a new coat of paint. The community REALLY wants a garden. Noosa Valley Manor B&B in Doonan was awarded a Certificate of Excellence on Trip Advisor. Sunday the horse made a break for it on Eumundi-Range Rd. Business News Hola! Spanish cuisine for Eumundi “Sophisticated but not pretentious,” is how Peter O’Brien describes his latest food foray, a chargrilled tapas restaurant called Barcelona, scheduled to open in the near future. Handily located across the road from his current CIA café on Memorial Dr, Peter says he’ll run both businesses with his wife Annie and brother John. Inspired by the trio’s love
of Spain and South America, the colourful Mediterranean yellow and blue fence, painted by local Liz, is a taste of things to come. They are looking forward to evening diners enjoying the signature dishes and tapas by local chef Tim Formosa. I for one hope Tim’s Peri-Peri is as good as his renowned tomato relish. By Leo Wiles

Business News Eumundi's new state-of -the-art Medical Centre Anthony Wynne-Hoelscher ECCO General Manager In late 2010 Eumundi awoke one Monday morning to discover that the Medical Centre had closed its doors and would not be reopening. Stirred into immediate action, the Eumundi Chamber of Commerce (ECC) addressed this devastating situation and looked to resurrect our town’s vital Medical Centre. Subsequently, the Chamber recommended to Eumundi Combined Community Organisation (ECCO) that the community should purchase the business, fixtures, fittings, records and lease for the good of the town. There was great community enthusiasm and support but naturally ECCO had very little knowledge about operating a medical centre. Subsequently, the Board was thrilled to obtain the services of Dr Carlos Sanchez who shared their enthusiasm and optimism for a community owned
medical centre. In the first week of re-opening there were 27 patients - the start of a long journey towards 200 appointments per week. ECCO heavily subsidised the operation of the Centre for the first two years to the tune of approximately Sunshine Coast $100,000 thanks to funds Mayor Mark Jamieson from the ECCO car park congratulated Eumundi on and the work of dedicated its new Ochre run medical centre at the opening last volunteers. Community News Fight against quarry will continue Residents of Yandina Creek, Verrierdale and surrounding areas are determined to continue their campaign against a proposed quarry by developer Parklands Blue Metal.
Sunshine Coast Council, battled in Court against Parklands Blue Metal who appealed SCC’s earlier unanimous rejection of the quarry application. “We’re naturally disappointed with the court decision but we will now move on to a new phase of this important battle for our local community,” said YCPA President, Alex Watson.
On Friday 16 May, the Planning and Environment Court in Maroochydore handed down an approval for the quarry application with conditions. Community members, with the assistance of the Yandina Creek Progress Association together with

Lake Weyba still under threat Despite the recent refusal of the Godfrey Mantle Noosa On Weyba development application by both the Noosa Shire Council and the Sunshine Coast Council on over 20 different grounds for refusal, the imposition of stringent conditions by the Department of Environment Heritage and Protection that impact significantly on the proposal, and submission of more than 1000 objections by the community, the developer has lodged an appeal in the Planning and Environment Court. All submitters have now received
notification of the appeal and must lodge a Notice of Election as a co-respondent before the 30 May if they wish to be part of the legal process. Mayor Noel Playford said, ”Our lake and river system is the lifeblood of Noosa and our tourism industry and our community has demanded that we protect it by upholding the Noosa Plan.” Submitters are not compelled to lodge a Notice of Election. as ever to explore all options with Council to prevent this inappropriate development spoiling our lovely rural residential quality of life.” SCC, YCPA and any of the other co-respondents fighting against the quarry in court now have 30 business days to appeal the court decision. Any such appeal would need to be based on errors in law found within the court decision. “Our legal team will be reviewing the court judgement with Council’s legal experts and advising our committee of their
assessment. The judgement is an 80-page document so this process may take some time.” “In the meantime we have opportunity to work through elements of a stringent conditions package that council would place on any possible quarry proceeding on the site,” said Alex Watson. The YCPA are encouraging all local residents to stay passionate and continue to fight against the quarry as the battle is far from over. www.quarryfight.com.au or ycpamembers@gmail.com

Community News Your Say Do I want the Noosa brand? Some years ago now, I attended the inaugural meeting of the Eumundi Doonan Verridale Residents Group. I think it was held at the Butter Factory, long before it was torched, of course. I did not join the group and I came away from that meeting with a feeling of mild disgust. It seemed to me that the issues driving the desire to be part of Noosa Shire back then were (a) lower rates; and (b) the sealing, kerbing and channelling of certain rural roads. There was little or no memorable debate about how the change might improve our sense of community. The "community of interest" buzz-phrase emerged somewhat later as the whole thing became packaged in corporate spin. And speaking of community - it was the new Sunshine Coast Council that held a massive and incredibly productive community conference shortly after its inauguration which set out its vision and policy for the next 20 years. I was there and it was a real thrill. There is really no impediment to getting involved no matter what regional
authority is in charge. I still meet regularly with councillors and staff and they admit that they value it highly as it puts them more closely in touch with their constituents. So - lower rates? This punter won't be putting money on that one. Kerbing and channelling? This is a mostly rural district so gravel roads are part of the scenery and there are still plenty of them in the Noosa Shire. And the Noosa brand? What exactly is that? Will it do anything to make this community a better place to live? If anything, the Noosa brand will artificially inflate land and house prices thereby making it that much harder for most of us to make ends meet and further reducing the diversity in our community. But maybe that's the idea. Keep out the riff-raff and make sure they don't live too close. This would be snobbery in its purest form and would be, quite frankly, the antithesis of Australian values. This community member wants no part of that. Damien, Eumundi Why so complicated? In Eumundi Green of 17/4/14, Kay wrote a letter against the EDV
What you’re saying on Facebook … My name is Georgia Brown and I have lived in the area of Eumundi for the entirety of my life and am currently living on Crescent Rd. There is a privately owned vacant block of land next to my house that has been for sale for some time and hasn't had much interest. I have been studying permaculture design and see this situation as a good opportunity to create a sense of community, education, awareness and healthy living with a community permaculture garden. I feel as though it would be a great location for a community garden: it’s visible from Memorial Dr and it’s central to many houses on Crescent Rd, many of whom I know are interested in gardening. I am offering to design the garden free of charge, of course, and am going to approach the council about it when I gain some momentum. I believe

Residents Group’s aspirations to become a part of the Noosa Shire. How can such a simple issue be made so complicated? Most of the people who live in EDV do most things in the Noosa Shire and very few things in the SCC area. Conclusion is logical. As for using the votes in the Eumundi and Peregian booths as leverage with councillors, the booths statistics show they only collect a very small percentage of the votes for divisions 9 and 10. Not much weight to throw around there. Chris McDonnell, Doonan.

that a town like Eumundi would benefit greatly from a community project like this and feel as though the people in this town would appreciate a local food source. Let me know what you think! Georgia. Tanya Freyling Yes, great idea. We tried to get this happening two years ago, had the community meeting yet nothing eventuated. We have enough support to get it happening, maybe you are the lady to get it started. We will be there to support it all the way. We even thought of a wood fire oven and monthly pizza community nights using produce from garden! Anja Morgan Yes this is so necessary for our community. We are so far behind all the other communities on the Coast. A group of us started a gardening club to do some tidying up at the Sunken
Garden in Eumundi a few years ago and planned to get a Community Garden started then and a few of the people commenting were part of that few but alas it was made all too hard by the Council at the time - and we were so disheartened and it fell into the too hard basket. I do hope things have changed and would love to help. It’s been a long time coming. I know plenty other ladies and a few guys that would love to get involved given half the chance. Keep me in the loop. Carly Head Such a great idea! Jessica Cahill Great idea Joanne Royal Definitely! Love to be involved x Trish Espin I have loved this idea for years. Dear Mummy, I love you… In the week following Mothers Day I really began to wonder what goes through the wondrous minds of kids when they are creating gifts and cards for their Mums or visiting the Mothers Day stalls to find that something special.
One of the smallest clubs on the Sunshine Coast and the youngest at only five years old, Eumundi Dragons Rugby Union Club prides itself on playing the game and having the spirit of rugby at its core. Two years ago a retired development officer came to coach this small town team. Doug Toms came from teaching in Townsville and teaching rugby in England in the late 1990s to eventually coach in Eumundi. The club has approximately 48 players split into five teams. When asked what convinced
10
him to coach the team, Doug explained, “The players. I enjoy coaching a great bunch of kids. They are cheerful, respectful and don’t give up when things aren’t going well at the scoreboard.” He then added, “The highlight is when we play home matches. Even better when we play well with supporters cheering from the sideline. The club parents are very supportive and easy going. They are always happy to help out when they can.” According to Doug, the Eumundi Dragons club aims to foster an enjoyment of the game; it encourages children to support their team mates and develops knowledge of game skills in a friendly and safe environment. They also learn discipline by playing by the rules and respecting other players no matter what their skill level. As Doug Toms says,
Mothers Day eve in our house was a happy night and the girls had decided to sleep in the same room to finish their preparations. We said goodnight and they slept soundly until around 3am. I woke to hear and feel someone at my door. I peeped through one eye and discovered the light of a torch. It quietly moved away and then I heard their bedroom door gently close. Someone was checking the time on my digital bedside clock! I closed my eyes and fell back into a grateful and contented sleep knowing what they were up to.
“Eumundi Dragons is a great club for boys and girls from 7 to 12 years old.”
When I woke on Mothers Day, our girls were both asleep. I waited in bed for my cuddles. I was
Siona Howard
waiting for a fair while; they were exhausted! I decided to take the dogs for a stroll and feed the horses until they woke. As I came back to the house, I heard little voices whispering, ”She’s coming, she’s coming!” - so cute. I was led into the kitchen with my eyes closed by our girls who were bursting with excitement. Chocolates, handpicked flowers, soaps, special cards and hearts greeted me. The words in the cards are priceless. I was promised 20 hugs and 20 “cises” (kisses) by my youngest and was told that I was fun, fantastic and funny by my eldest. The only complaint I heard all day was that there is not a designated Childrens Day! Here’s to all of the mothers out there. This is without a doubt the most important, thought generating, life changing and rewarding job in the world! Thanks kids for all the love and pressies!

Schools and Community Kids Under 8s day in Eumundi It was all about Eumundi’s youngest residents at Under 8s day last Friday with Eumundi State School teachers, seniors and parents putting on lots of fun activities. The sack race yet again proved a favourite, as did the sensory walk, parachute ball throw and pasta necklace making. Everyone thoroughly enjoyed just having fun and being a kid – including the grownups.

At this year’s national Sorry Day, Principal Mick Connors said he hoped the children would learn something new about Indigenous culture. Two of the school’s teachers shared their insight with students. Mrs Regan Shorey explained the meaning behind the aboriginal flag and eloquently shared her insight into Sorry Day. “It’s not about blaming, but acknowledging mistakes of the past and showing respect,” she said. Mrs Westera returned this year after teaching in the Torres Strait Islands and shared her wonderful experience with the school. Her year one class also performed traditional songs and dances for the day.

There’s the vicar, Geraldine Granger (played by Sandy Luscombe), the verger, Alice Tinker (played by Ruth Montgomery), the chairman of the Dibley Parish Council, David Horton (played by a newly bald Eddie Ellis), his son Hugo (played by Greg Pleming), Jim “no-no” Trott (played by Bill Hastings), Owen Newitt the farmer (played by Richard Luscombe) and Mrs Letitia Cropley (played by Carol Burls) plus the millionaire (played by Hamish Woods). This rib tickling series, written by famous British
TV and film, writer/director/ producer, Richard Curtis and Paul Mayhew-Archer, aired on TV over a 13 year span. It’s set in the fictional village of Dibley and tells of the arrival of the first woman priest to the area and her impact on the straightlaced parish. The stage version is drawn from three actual episodes: The Arrival, The Window and the Weather and The Easter Bunny and it’s laughs all the way. There was only one glitch during the rehearsal period when Carol Hoger, playing Mrs Cropley, fell ill and had to withdraw (community theatres rarely, if ever, run to understudies). At short notice the role was taken over by Carol Burls.

Books Self-publishing: where to begin? Ange Takats Are you in the process of writing a book? Are you considering self-publishing? Do you have a million questions in your head about word count, font choice, cover design, book launches and marketing? It took me a year to finish my 90,000-word travel memoir The Buffalo Funeral. That year often involved my alarm going off at 5am so I could start my day by writing 1000 words. I felt a huge sense of achievement when I finally finished my manuscript – but that excitement dissipated very quickly when I realised I had no idea how to publish a book! I spent the next six months researching the world of self-publishing – liaising with typesetters, designers, authors and printers. My goal was to create a self-published book that looked, felt and smelled like a "real" book. That might sound strange but if you pick up the average self-published book you will understand what I mean! I also spent many weeks putting together a marketing plan that included poster and flyer design, media launches in Sydney and Brisbane, mail-outs to book reviewers and pitches to literary festivals.
A few things to keep in mind when self-publishing • Don’t rely on your friends and family when it comes to editing your manuscript. Seek the guidance of a professional who won’t be afraid to offer constructive criticism. • If you are going to print hard copies – make sure you choose a company that specialises in book printing. • People do judge a book by its cover. Invest in the services of a great graphic designer. • Start working on your marketing plan before you print your book. • Don’t give up! Self-publishing is an intense journey but it can be extremely rewarding if you do it the right way.
Since publishing my memoir in 2011, I’ve been a guest speaker at the Byron Bay Writers’ Festival and Sydney Jewish Writers’ Festival. My book has also featured on Richard Fidler’s Conversations on ABC Radio and received high praise from reviewers.
Doonan local Ange is running an introductory workshop on self-publishing on Thursday 5 June from 6-8pm at Annie’s Books in Peregian. $60 includes light refreshments. Limited spaces 5448 2053 or anniesbooks@bigpond.com

Phil Jarratt’s That Summer at Boomerang Duncan Sayers
We have a strong, loyal readership and our community reads us from cover to cover & Our readers keep back issues for reference and to share with visitors and family
I was recently sitting on my board out off Noosa Main Beach waiting for some waves to come through. It wasn’t exactly a day for the tourist brochures: overcast, air temperature colder than the water, rain-squalls blowing through – another day in sub-tropical paradise. The school holidays had just finished and as usual the crowds of asylum seekers from the south had gone back to where they came from – no tow-back policy needed fortunately. I turned to one of my scattered companions drifting in a swell pockmarked by raindrops and yelled, “at least we’ve got our beach back”. By contrast I’ve been reading That Summer at Boomerang by local author Phil Jarratt. At a book launch event I attended recently, Phil summed up the setting as a time when “fun was young”. His book – perhaps
Eumundi Green is a not-for-profit fortnightly magazine made by the community for the community
better described as Phil’s labour of love – narrows in on the 1914-15 visit to Australia by Hawaiian swimmer and surfer Duke Kahanamoku. Duke’s tour contradicted a local environment where surfbathing was frowned upon if not actively banned, and the White Australia policy was in full force. Overriding all of this, were those who recognised that plenty of money could be made from exhibiting fun. Perhaps the setting could be better summarised as when leisure industries were young. History has proven this correct: contrast a lone Hawaiian surfing Sydney’s northern beaches, with the crowds and surf-rage of Manly or the Noosa Points - of today. Phil takes a pile of research material and fictionalises the gaps left by the documents to create a rolling narrative. There are so many contradictions in the times: despair at world events with local optimism, acceptance versus racism, leisure over utilitarianism, professional temptations risking amateur status. World War I is just getting started, juxtaposed with crowds of people descending on Sydney’s beaches to watch a surf industry get underway, as the focus of this adoration was offered accommodation for “Kanakas” down the back of the hotel. That Summer at Boomerang is a fascinating read even if you don’t surf. Oh and by the way, don’t try surfing. You won’t like it!

Food La Soupe au Pistou
Recipe and photos, Alain Bouvier With winter coming, there is nothing better than a soup to warm up. As usual my recipe the Pistou soup, “La Soupe au Pistou”, reflects where I come from, the South of France. Our cuisine is very much influenced by, and similar to, Italian cuisine. The Italians have pesto, and we have pistou. This recipe is a Summer soup, originally from Genova in Italy, but having crossed the border, it has been adapted by les provencaux, (the people of Southern France). It is hearty and filling, but is also fresh and light. We can grow these vegies through the mild winter in South-East Queensland, which makes Pistou perfect for our climate now. Ingredients • 800 g of dried cannellini beans and bertolli beans, soaked and cooked (canned is also fine) • 500 g of fresh green beans • 3 zucchini • 3 potatoes • 2 large tomatoes • 6 garlic cloves • 1 bunch basil • 200 g of penne pasta • 200 g speck (similar to bacon) • 175 g grated swiss cheese, parmesan and edam (combined)
• 1 egg yolk • 150 mls olive oil • salt & pepper to taste Method Top and tail green beans. Chop zucchini in small cubes. Wash and chop potatoes into small cubes. Fill a large saucepan with three ltrs of cold water, add green beans, zucchini, potatoes, and whole piece of speck (unchopped) and bring to the boil, then reduce heat to simmer. After 20 mins, add cannellini and bertolli beans and

whole tomatoes. Leave to simmer for another 25 mins. Remove speck and tomatoes with a strainer spoon, and put aside; they will be used later for the Pistou. Add pasta to soup and cook an additional 15 mins. Meanwhile, peel the garlic, pluck basil leaves from stalks, peel skin off the tomatoes (it will slide off easily) and deseed them (if not too hot, simply squeeze them gently). Chop speck into small cubes. Blend the tomatoes, basil, garlic and a bit of oil in food processor.
Add speck and cheese, then egg yolk and slowly add remaining oil while blending. The sauce should have the consistency of mayonnaise. As a vegetarian option, simply omit the speck. Serve the soup in bowls and top with the pistou sauce, et voila.

Health All in your mind
Marc Newman
Recently a gentleman wandered past my office just as I had stepped out to enjoy some early morning sunshine;. As he caught my eye he asked, “Don’t you think this performance coaching stuff is all just in your mind?”
When somebody comes to me with an unwanted behaviour or experience, I help them clearly define what they want instead and what needs to change to make that occur. The "why" is often far more challenging for someone to define than the "how".
I laughed and agreed, because it absolutely is! Henry Ford was famously quoted as saying “whether you think you can, or you think you can’t, you’re probably right.”
If your current experience of life leaves you feeling uninspired or frustrated, then you need to decide what specifically you want instead. Until you can clearly define that, you don’t have a goal to work towards. Once you have a goal, it must completely inspire you. If it doesn’t, then you haven’t yet found a big enough "why" and you won’t take the steps required to change; or you won’t keep trying until you succeed.
Achieving success in any area of your life is about having the right mindset. Professional athletes, high profile business people and celebrities all rely upon the expertise of a coach to help them to consistently perform at their best. I know because my client list spans seven countries around the world, and includes a diverse range of people, from military personnel, to executives of multi-national corporations, and individuals such as a successful Australian artist, a US television actor, local dignitaries, regular mums and dads, and young people trying to navigate their way through school.
People seek my help when they want more. More health, more money, more energy, more time, more happiness- the list goes on. When I ask what action they’ve already taken, they usually say “nothing”. I know one thing is certain, if nothing changes nothing changes. Decide what you truly want and you’ve taken the first step toward a better life. Now take action.

After hurting her neck 20 years ago, Elizabeth Hughes tried many therapies to heal her pain. The use of muscle testing with kinesiology allowed her to communicate to her body and ask what the cause of her neck problem was. Even though her pain was physical, the cause was emotional and this led her to study and use kinesiology every day since. As the author of the book Your Body is the Answer, Elizabeth will be holding a session at Cooroy Library on Monday 16 June from 1-2.30pm. She is pleased to be able to teach you some simple skills that you can use at home to tune in more deeply to your body and ask what treatments will help heal. Free though bookings are required.

Environment and Outdoors Life on a better ridge - why community garden? Claudette Betterridge
Although I've always had an interest in my local community garden, it was not until recently that I realised the benefits of becoming a member and renting my own plot there. “Why Claudette,” I hear you ask, “when you live on an acreage property and have all that space, would you need to join the gardens? I thought they were just for people on tiny blocks of land or in rented apartments.” There are several reasons for my interest: The first is evident in the name. It's the "community" in community gardens that says the most for me. As someone who works from home it is easy to become a little insular and visitors can be rare when
there are garden beds to dig over, compost to turn or buildings to erect. A monthly meeting, or better still a working bee at the gardens can be just what the doctor ordered. Some hearty physical activity doing what's needed that month, a dose of good humour and gardening knowledge shared with others, some fresh herbs and greens to take home and a meal and a cuppa with like minded souls can keep you going through the quiet days at home. Also, when life gets hectic (as it has been lately) it can be easy to fall behind in some of the necessities of life on the ridge. For instance, we like to "make" our own soil for small garden beds and pots using dirt from the property or the bottom of the dam and adding things like cow, goat, alpaca and/or chicken manures, fire ash, vermiculite, blood and bone, dynamic lifter, worm castings, compost or whatever
other organic goodies happen to be on hand at the time. This system not only takes time to collect and put together, but if it happens to be a "no dig" style garden we're making- layering these types of materials with old newspapers, cardboard and garden clippings- there can be a bit of a waiting period while the contents break down enough to plant into. Add to this situation the spoils of previous enthusiasm, where every seed I lovingly soaked and planted has sprouted and is fast outgrowing its seedling tray, desperately needing to spread its roots, and you have just the recipe for a ready made, previously dug and manured garden bed in town. Community gardens in our area can be found in Pomona, Cooroy, Tewantin, Perigian, Yandina and Nambour.

Nature Notes Sawflies Kon Hepers A few days ago we almost stepped on a small patch of moving mass among the leaf-litter. We had not seen that before but knew it was a compact unit of sawfly larvae heading for the nearest food tree. There were about fifty of them, each one about 5 cm long with what looked like 6 fleshy legs. When we bent down for a closer look and photograph they became resentful and seemed to take turns in arching up and exuding a yellowish liquid. It is believed that they can actually squirt this liquid a short distance as a deterrent to potential predators. This gave rise to the common name “Spitfire”, the larvae of the species Perga spp or Steel-blue Sawfly. The liquid is an irritant mostly composed of eucalyptus extract. The larvae of other species of sawfly do not use this defence but all of them cluster in tight packs by day (heads out), dispersing to feed at night. While dispersed the larvae “stay in touch” with one another by
tapping the branch. Ones that become isolated tap more rapidly until they sense a “reply”. It’s a bit like Morse Code. There are six larval stages lasting two to four months at the end of which the larvae descend to the ground, dig into the soil and pupate. This pupa stage can last up to two years before the new adult sawflies emerge. Sawflies are not flies at all. They belong to the order Hymenoptera meaning Membrane Wing and as such are closely related to wasps but from a more ancient lineage. Superficially they look similar to wasps but can easily be told apart: wasps have a very slender “waist” at the joint of thorax and abdomen whereas in sawflies the waist is not so easy to distinguish. And, importantly, sawflies do not sting. The name “sawfly” refers to the female’s egg-laying organ (ovipositor) which is sawshaped and used to cut into leaf ribs where the raft of eggs is deposited. In true wasps the
Eumundi & District Community Assn Inc
ovipositor is needle-shaped and can be used to deliver a painful sting. There are about 200 species of native sawflies ranging in size from tiny to about 25 mm long. Many are food-source specific: there are sawflies species specific to eucalypts, bottle-brush, melaleuca and other plants. Adult sawflies live only five or six days, long enough for the females to lay their fertile eggs
in suitable vegetation. There are very few males compared to females: they do not eat nor are they required for reproduction which in most cases is parthenogenic (the females basically clone themselves). Life isn’t much fun being a male sawfly! But it seems to work. At times sawfly larvae can swell to large numbers and cause problems to the forestry industry by completely stripping feed trees.
Operating Wednesday Markets for Our Community
Sleeping In After 11 years of being involved with the Wednesday markets, Beau Hartshorn has for some time now been enjoying sleeping in on a Wednesday morning. Beau is no longer involved on market days. James Adams is now the early bird that has taken on the task of Wednesday markets. James has assisted Beau at times over the past few years and he is already popular with the stall holders. Beau was well-liked and appreciated by the stallholders for his willingness to help. His cheery face and his positive attitude will be remembered. EDCA would like to take this opportunity to thank Beau for all his hard work over the years. We wish him all the very best of luck with any future venture he undertakes. We welcome James to the team. James and Beau at the terraces

Gardening Working for our community!
These are no has-beens Matt Popplewell at all, but shown to improve speed of germination). With spacing, if you put them too close together, the plants become more prone to fungal disease but if they’re too far apart they can’t help support each other. Broad beans get top heavy later on as beans form and will need a bamboo cane support.
Autumn is a great time to sow broad beans for a fresh spring crop. They are one of the easiest vegetables to grow and great fun to try. Because of the huge size of the seed it’s a great plant for kids to plant in a pot or straight into the garden. They rarely fail to grow and it’s a wonderful intro into the life of a young veggie grower. They’ll grow rapidly through the cooler months with no ill effects of the cold nights here and with a bit of luck, you’ll have bushy plants with lots of large, healthy bean pods about four months after planting. As with most vegies grown at this time of year, it’s best to choose a sunny, well-drained spot. Beans are not fussy with soil type and will cope with clay or even slightly saline soil, but it’s a good idea to improve it with some low-nitrogen organic matter like cow manure so the soil holds plenty of moisture - just don’t flood it with these types of fertiliser or the high nitrogen content will produce a tropical leaf deluge but no beans. Plant the seeds by first submerging in a mild concentration of seaweed extract overnight (not essential
Once you’ve planted your bean seeds, the bean should emerge at 14 days - so please be patient kids! – some will germinate later than others. The plants will power-on through winter and produce metre high growth. The grey-green leaves lead to white flowers with black centres in late winter - rather pretty in fact! It’s suggested that you nip the growth tip out at a metre to encourage side growth and more flowers (which form the beans). Harvest pods when young. You may notice, when pulling up the finished plant, they have little white balls attached to their roots. This is mother’s milk to the bean and supplies goodness for them as a form of nitrogen fertiliser. Don’t waste these but cut off the root from the stem after the harvest has finished and dig them back into the soil.

Monday evening 23rd June – School of Arts
Join us for the “Eumundi Experience” What do you love about Eumundi? What does “Experience Eumundi” mean to you? Here at ECCO we believe that “Experience Eumundi” should underpin what we aspire to as a place that sets us apart from all the other hinterland towns… a place that is a true 7 day experience – not only for visitors young and old, but also for all of us who are living here and loving it! We already have a rich array of unique and wonderful major events in town such as our Christmas Pageant, Night Markets, Eumundi Live, Sunshine Coast Pride Festival, Woofstock, the Body Art Carnivale, Passion for Fashion, All Well and Good and many other brilliant festivals that take place in Eumundi. But we are in the process of adding much more to this rich palette so that we truly re-establish this magic place as a centre for the arts, literature, music, heritage and world-renowned artisan markets - whilst lifting the seven day shopping experience combined with brilliant dining, pub and bar options and new activities for our younger residents and visitors for adventure and cool escapades. In recent months we have been working behind the scenes meeting with business owners, shopkeepers, residents, marketeers, Council and tourism bodies to help pull together the threads of gold that bind this special place together. So on Monday evening the 23rd June, we’d love you to join us for a meet and greet, as we reveal our Experience Eumundi road map and related activities, including the re-staging of our wonderful Eumundi Green - as we move into the 2nd half of 2014. We’ll launch our new Eumundi Card 4562 Rewards program, FREE Locals Market Parking and some of the many new events, activities and town beautification programs that we have slated for action. You’ll receive your invitation soon… Drinks and canapés are on us!

Heritage Eumundi Made and “Queensland Made” Wendy Birrell Sunny Brae Hospital (now part of Eumundi Showgrounds) 1910
Author Joanne Holliman has written a biography about former Eumundi local Sir Leo Hielscher that gives a wonderful insight into his life in this region and Queensland politics. Born in Eumundi’s Sunny Brae Hospital (now part of Eumundi Show grounds) in 1926, Leo spent his childhood here up to the age of 13. Leo's parents, Leslie Charles and Elizabeth Jane Hielscher, came with his elder brothers Roy and Glen to Eumundi around 1923. They bought a small house at the end of Cook Street and lived there until 1940. Leo's father worked as a blacksmith for George Adams near the beginning of Cook St. Leo went to Eumundi State School, walking home each day to have dinner - as lunch was then referred to. The family moved to Brisbane in 1940 but Leo has maintained strong ties with Eumundi. In the book Sir Leo Hielscher: Queensland Made, his unique perspective as the impartial "numbers man" at the centre of
Queensland’s economic growth and reform for more than 30 years is carefully documented via anecdotes, interviews and commentary from a veritable who’s who of our state. He joined the Queensland Public Service at an early age and for 46 years played an important part in the finances of the State, keeping the fiscal position in balance and helping bring the economy to a high level. From bust to boom, Sir Leo Hielscher was at the table with 16 state treasurers, 10 premiers and countless major players from the international economics realm over the past seven decades. Over the years, Sir Leo was also instrumental in some of Queensland’s biggest infrastructure and events, including the 1982 Commonwealth Games, the 1988 World Expo, the construction of the Cultural Centre and the Gateway Bridge, which was renamed in his honour in 2010. In the months she spent researching and writing Sir Leo’s story, Brisbane-based
Sunny Brae Hospital with the extension
writer and editor Joanne Holliman discovered just how strong his reputation in Queensland really is. Sir Leo said, “While Queenslanders may remember the buildings, the events, the politicians who signposted the state’s climb out of a moribund and essentially third-world economic status, it’s only an entrepreneurial spirit that will keep our economy pointing skywards.

“If there’s one economics lesson that sums up my whole approach to the state’s budgets it’s this: Think of it like a household budget. You don’t borrow to buy the groceries. Don’t spend what you don’t have. If expenditure is more than revenue, you need to re-prioritise,” he explained. Meet Sir Leo and author Joanne Holliman at Berkelouw Books Eumundi, Friday 27 June from 5pm. Drinks and nibbles provided. Please RSVP by email eumundi@berkelouw. com.au

Call out to the community The Discover Eumundi Team. Many of you have probably visited Discover Eumundi Heritage and Visitor Centre – the large church looking building just north of the Eumundi Post Office. Once the Methodist, then Uniting church in Eumundi, it now houses a large collection of artefacts, documents and photos on the history of Eumundi and the surrounding district. What many may not be aware of is that it is open seven days a week and staff and volunteers handle many enquiries by phone, email and in person, about the heritage collection housed in Eumundi and also gives out visitor information on what to see and do in the area.

This busy centre relies heavily on volunteers to not only keep the doors open and handle enquiries, but also help with updating and adding information to computer databases storing much of the historical information, scanning of photographs, researching, writing, proof reading and checking historical accuracy. Discover Eumundi also offers a service open to the public of photocopying, scanning, emailing and printing of their documents. The Centre applies for outside funding for various public programs and has had great
success over the last few years. Recently a grant for the 100th Anniversary of Anzac Day in 2015 was successful and volunteers will soon start research to find information necessary to create the three projects the grant will go towards. Recently for a number of reasons key volunteers have left Discover Eumundi and we find the need to Call out to the Eumundi Community for help. A number of projects are under way with some very close to completion but we need some assistance.
to one day a week to volunteer at Discover Eumundi - it would help ease the workload. Ideally we are looking for people interested in history - especially Eumundi’s – with a background or interest in research, ability to write well (including press releases), having some graphic design, database, or other computer skills or wanting to up skill the ones they have. Renovator on 1017M2
A peaceful rural setting
It has been neglected, but that is reflected in the asking price. If you are looking for a renovator or first home, then this is well worth an inspection. Situated high in Eumundi in a no through road and surrounded by quality homes is this drab looking highset on 1017m2 just begging for a makeover. The 3 bedroom home has high ceilings throughout, a good size lounge and kitchen areas and storage below. If you are ready for a bit of hard work and have an imaginative flair this could be the one you are looking for.
Escape the busy life and enjoy the fantastic rural views from this beautiful 10 acre property only 10 minutes from Eumundi. The character family home with feature pine and high cathedral ceilings has an open plan living area complete with fire place, study and verandahs all round. Adjoining the home by covered walk way is guest accommodation with ensuite (could make granny flat) plus outdoor living, pergola and 2 car carport. The land which is gently undulating is nicely landscaped around the house with bird attracting natives and fruit trees including many mature macadamias.
