Standing in the wings watching the lovely Katie Noonan, Louise King and Ebony Hamacek mesmerise an audience of around 250, it was hard not to be swept away by the performers’ music and storytelling. The 102 year old hall has seen many things in its time, but last Friday’s concert saw the old dame come to life with this moving concert. Last weekend also saw the Reality Bites Literary Festival find a new home in Eumundi. It was amazing to be able to stroll into town and listen to the engaging words of so many talented authors that had come to town for the weekend. What a lucky town to have a weekend full of such talent and charm.

Business C O A ST T OURISM COMES TO TOWN NEW OWNERS for pizzeria The Green Room at the Imperial Hotel in Eumundi hosted the recent Sunshine Coast Destination’s (SCDL) networking night with around 150 tourism operators from across the coast attending. Unsuspecting guests were blindfolded before joining their team for networking games. Presentations were also made by Laughlin Rigby and Jan Foletta of SCDL about the new Vacation Migration campaign (of which Eumundi briefly features) and Australia’s Nature Coast. Representatives from Discover Eumundi, Experience Eumundi, Original Eumundi Markets and The Green were in attendance representing the township.

Last Friday night, Eumundi’s Papa Costas had customers spilling out on Memorial Dr. The takeaway restaurant has new owners and undergone a makeover. Wayne Halliday (1st right) recently bought the pizzeria and has his youngest son Todd (2nd right) helping with the business. The friendly Canadian, who was a cook in his earlier days, said “The best thing since we took over… we’ve met a lot of really friendly locals.” “What’s even better is that they’re giving us a chance to show them that we don’t just have great food - we serve up five star customer service too,” said the Cash Rd local.

B u siness awards This was the 8th year of the Eumundi Business Awards held by local businessman Louis Formosa for his three major market ventures: Eumundi Square, Eumundi Parkside and Eumundi Terraces. A BBQ feast was laid on for around 60 stallholders and micro business owners, with the bar manned by Joe’s Waterhole manager Sophie and entertainment supplied by local talent Tracey Combes. Before presenting the awards Mr Formosa said, “It was very difficult to choose the winners – every stallholder should be the winner.”

Local business Rockcote has been announced as a finalist in the prestigious Banksia Awards. A Eumundi owned company run by Chris and Bob Cameron, Rockcote has offices at Yandina and Nerang on the Gold Coast. Martine’s a Winner Winner of the best Eumundi and District Community Association Wednesday Market Business Award is Ms Martine Dalziel, who has emerged over the years as the largest supplier of hemp products in Queensland. Martine with her partner Neil Flannery started at Eumundi Parkside Market and progressed to the EDCA markets on Wednesday and EHA Saturday Markets. Martine has been promoting mostly menswear hemp products for seventeen years. During the time Ms Dalziel has maintained an effervescent smile with cheerfulness, punctuality and reliability being her natural personal traits. Martine reminds everyone that hemp garment products are pest free, environmentally friendly and contain natural fibres soft to touch and feeling comfortable against the skin. Sunshine Coast Council’s unanimous decision to not support a proposed boundary change by the EDV Residents Group seemingly put this issue to bed, however with a State Government election looming, EDV is clinging to its cause and recently put a submission to Noosa Council seeking support for the change. Again, the motivation behind this proposed breakaway appears to be little more than an unsubstantiated desire to be associated with the Noosa brand. The group has tried to rally support by pedalling misinformation that Sunshine Coast Council is supposedly up to its neck in liabilities and hurtling towards huge rate rises in the near future. Well I can tell

you, nothing could be further from the truth. Sunshine Coast Council’s decision to oppose this move isn’t about power, status or money. It’s about ensuring we’re a unified region that gets on with our business and that our residents and local businesses are not constantly subjected to the uncertainty and turmoil that these changes bring – when there is no compelling reason for the change they propose. We’ve already been subjected to years of amalgamation and de-amalgamation dramas and this kind of conjecture doesn’t give any confidence to people looking to live or invest in this area. What’s really needed here is to

Boundary debate: SCA The EDV residents group have presented their case for the amalgamation of Noosa Council and the Northern Sunshine Coast Council to the Noosa Council who have written a report on this new amalgamation issue. Firstly, it should be noted that the EDV Group have no authority to speak for the general population of either the Sunshine Coast or the districts of Eumundi, Doonan and Verrierdale, as they are only a small organisation with a specific interest which is not supported formally by the Sunshine Coast Council or the broader Sunshine Coast Community in any way. The Noosa Council report on the reamalgamation of Noosa and the Northern Sunshine Coast goes to great lengths to refer to the now well used cliché “Communities of Interest” as the sole reason for supporting such an aggressive move to take over the Sunshine Coast. It then becomes obvious to all that if “Communities of Interest” is the catalyst for amalgamation and expansion then Noosa should once again become a part of the Sunshine Coast for many reasons: • Noosa residents travel to Maroochydore CBD and spend over $100 million dollars annually in the Sunshine Coast. • Thousands of Noosa Residents drive the Sunshine Coast roads every day for work. • Thousands of Noosa residents

use beaches, recreational facilities, airport and university daily. • Thousands of Noosa residents utilize the Sunshine Coast medical and business services daily. These statistics are all predicted to grow as the Sunshine Coast delivers the nation’s best hospital and health precinct and a revitalised world class CBD (for statistical research refer to Ted Fitzgerald). The Sunshine Coast Alliance (SCA) will be only too pleased to point out to the Noosa Council, the Sunshine Coast Council and the Minister for Local Government, the true facts about “Communities of Interest” which identifies a massive daily migration imbalance of Noosa residents travelling into the Sunshine Coast daily. SCA will also point out the ludicrous concept of re-amalgamation after the State Government under Beattie and Bligh forced amalgamation onto the Sunshine Coast at great expense and great upheaval to the region. This will put to bed for all time the ridiculous argument that the residents of the Sunshine Coast should be forced into becoming part of Noosa because of… an aggressive Noosa Council which now has close ties to the Noosa Parks Association, a political organisation determined to influence decision making without due process. 8

get on with making our local community as great as it can be as per our mission statement – Australia’s most sustainable region – clean, green and diverse. A new paint job on walkway proposal Recently I spent a good portion of a Saturday morning walking and perusing a mooted heritage trail with sub-committee members of the Eumundi Historical Association (EHA). I have proposed the 14km natural walking trail from Eumundi to Cooroy be investigated further by council as I believe the trail would be a tremendous asset. This trail would follow the old railway line and offer a unique outdoor

experience for bushwalkers, horse riders and cyclists alike. The proposed trail starts at the Eumundi Markets site at the underpass below Caplick Way. This concrete underpass used to be covered in graffiti but was recently painted out by council. I’m very much aware that a portion of the local community would like this underpass to be characterised with great street art. I am happy to support the idea of a street art project where youngsters could create an artwork with the help of professional artists that is renewed regularly. Council is currently in the process of working through the logistics and costings of this proposal so watch this space for more details very soon!

Community A magical night of m u sic Last Friday had all the makings of an outstanding evening. After a set from the wonderful Cello Dreaming, up-and-comer Ebony Hamacek, filled the hall and wowed the audience with her beautiful melodies, gutsy guitar and powerful voice. Louise King followed, and is renowned for her accomplished musicianship and energy. King plays the cello with a precision both delicate and arresting. She took the room on a journey that began with Bach, journeyed through the Middle East and back home to Peregian Beach with a piece by local composer Stephen Cronin. I think it’s the combination of Katie Noonan’s ethereal and utterly breathtaking voice,

along with her salt-of-the-earth, open nature that seems to take me completely out of my seat and into another stratosphere in seconds. Katie managed to make us feel like we had been invited to her house, offered a cup of tea, then pulling the floor from beneath our feet and gently removing the roof to reveal the endless starry night - all without leaving her chair. Katie is world class, and yet, very much a local Eumundi muso and mum. She shared songs from her album Songs That Made Me, and put her sparkly new keyboard through its paces with Last Goodbye by Jeff Buckley (nailed it!) and Special Ones by George, among others. Katie is

off on a national tour soon and I can’t help but feel a smug sense of pride to know that when she returns, it will be to us here in Eumundi. All in all the night had a lovely, country charm that was enhanced by: the stage front child friendly mat and cushions, a hearty feast prepared by Eumundi State School’s P&C, the bar manned by EHA members, colourful stage dressing by TT Creator, volunteers from the Reality Bites festival and an audience of friendly faces new and old. Funds raised from the event go to the maintenance of the Hall so that in 102 years the community can gather for another magical evening

Last weekend’s Reality Bites Literary Festival found a new home in Eumundi and filled the township with an incredible pool of talented authors and an enthused audience. The festival celebrated non-fiction writing and a love of reading with some of the weekend highlights including talks with Maxine McKew, John Birmingham, Keelen Mailman and David Leser. The workshops were a wonderful inclusion as was Saturday night’s drinks with the writers who were house by local B&Bs.

My staff and I also attended the Sunshine Coast Destination Limited networking night at the Imperial Lionheart and made some great business connections – people we’ll be collaborating with on future projects.

It was great to see our stallholders get into the spirit of “Loud Shirt Day” last week, helping raise money for Hear & Say to fund a First Voice centre for deaf children. Thank you to those who participated and gave so generously. We recently hosted a Business Events Sunshine Coast (BESC) networking night where I shared our plans to improve market grounds and showcased the opportunities that lie within our stallholder community and market infrastructure for hosting corporate events. There was a lot of great feedback, with BESC keen to represent our market at the Asia-Pacific

The Eumundi Night Markets preparations are in full swing. Shops in town have taken up the offer of our free Christmas lights, our 5m Christmas tree has arrived and I’ve been climbing trees installing fairy lights! We’re busy planning a lantern parade, photos with Santa (at only $5, surely the best value on the Coast!), classic car displays and shopping under the stars – with more stalls than ever before. This year we’re also offering corporate marquees for company Christmas parties. Marquees will be set up with tables, chairs, lights and Christmas decorations and guests receiving food, drink and shopping vouchers to spend at the markets plus a personal visit from our performers/ street entertainers. N eed for a bigger st u dio Internationally acclaimed Doonan artist Stefan Dunlop recently returned from a residency in Leipzig, Germany where he became accustomed to a big studio. “It meant I could work on several paintings at once and significantly increase productivity - also my growing family has eyes on my current space!” Stefan said. He is about to start working on a new exhibition but after 10 years in his home studio he’s wanting to find shed space around 70 to 90 sqm, “Something that is a bit raw and with high ceilings and I’m happy to work on it to bring it up to scratch,” he said.

LOCAL LANDSCAPES Local artist Shirley Strano’s latest exhibition Sound of Imagination is now on show at the Butter Factory Arts Centre in Cooroy until Saturday 6 December. Exhibiting alongside is Shadows and Light by local artist and art educator Kerry Wilson. Both feature aspects of our natural landscape through a stunning selection of paintings, drawings and linocut prints, including a large installation of cut shapes from the handmade prints of Shirley Strano. Both artists are keen observers of the diversity of local landscapes: from paddocks and mountains in

Strano’s lino prints, to zooming in to the micro worlds of cracks and crevices in rocks and earth in Kerry Wilson’s paintings. Boundary Change. The An open letter from the Mayor of the Sunshine Coast to the residents of Eumundi, Doonan, Verrierdale and Weyba Downs Sunshine Coast Councillors recently read with amazement the advertisement from the Eumundi, Doonan, Verrierdale Residents for Boundary Change Group that appeared in The Eumundi Green on 2 October 2014.

The Sunshine Coast Council does not have a ﬁnancial problem and is not contemplating liabilities of over $1 billion per year. This is shown clearly in Council’s budget documents which are available at www.sunshinecoast.qld.gov.au

The Sunshine Coast Council is one of the strongest and most ﬁnancially stable councils in Queensland – indeed potentially in Australia. This is conﬁrmed annually by the independent Queensland Treasury Corporation.

The majority of the investment in the expansion of the Sunshine Coast Airport and the development of the Maroochydore city centre will ultimately come from the private sector – or be recouped over time from the private sector. The benefits from these investments however – like direct access to international flights, new job opportunities and improved regional facilities – will flow to you and other residents of the Sunshine Coast.

The Sunshine Coast Council is not contemplating rate increases of 25% – this could not be justiﬁed and nor is it needed.

Furthermore, no council can provide an absolute guarantee of no rate increases in the future. Communities should treat with extreme caution any Council or lobby group that offers such a promise.

Why were we amazed? Quite simply, it was because we could not believe that your community should be subjected to the misinformation published by a select group of people whose real motivations are unclear. And Council noticed that of this select few, no one was prepared to put their name to the advertisement – just a telephone number. I would suggest that is hardly the action of someone seeking to be open with the community. They may dress things up and say the boundary change is needed to protect your lifestyle and that there is a closer association with the values of Noosa. I do not believe that is their motivation at all. These are strong words – and I make no apology for this. The Sunshine Coast Council has had enough of the misinformation that is being promoted by the Residents for Boundary Change Group to generate uncertainty in your community. You should not be subjected to this. You should be able to go about your daily life without this cloud of fear and uncertainty hanging over your head because of the views and actions of a select few.

I have said it before and I will say it again. The Eumundi, Doonan, Verrierdale and Weyba Downs communities are an important part of the Sunshine Coast and have been for more than 100 years. Sunshine Coast Council values your uniqueness and we want you to retain this – and be part of our exciting future. Our vision is to be Australia’s most sustainable region – vibrant, green, diverse – and we want you to be part of that.

Ridiculous scaremongering about high-rise developments in Eumundi is just that – scare mongering.

The Sunshine Coast Council is committed to a strong future for the Eumundi, Doonan, Verrierdale and Weyba Downs communities.

It is designed to convince you to support an agenda that I believe has nothing to do with safeguarding your future – and more to do with self interest.

We have a strong record of supporting you – and we will continue to do so.

Your Council has taken a strong stance on this matter.

A vibrant young lady, she worked really hard amongst a team of veteran performers and more than held her own, which led to The Indee selecting her, without further audition, to play Gretel in its very first pantomime (2003), Hansel & Gretal. When told she’d been chosen and asked if she would like the part, she shed a tear. We asked what was upsetting her and she replied that she’s never even been invited to audition for anything before. Her partner, as Hansel, was another highly talented young lady, Ashlee McKinnon, and together they nailed it. Well supported, I might add, by the late Alan Ball, as the wicked witch of Gingerbread Cottage, complete with flowing locks and a grossly warty nose. From there Calyce became a regular on The Indee stage, appearing in musicals and plays. She studied singing under the late Des Taylor, himself a regular in Indee musicals and an ex international light opera star. She set her sights on getting good passes at school in order to have a crack at gaining a place at uni in performance theatre. She made it on to Mackay University’s three-year Musical Theatre course. Since then she’s travelled the world and taught singing to a handful of young up and coming performers. Sunday 30 November at 4pm she’ll headline The Indee production Calyce Bennetts as Alice in Kids’ Stuff at the Eumundi SOA. the 2007 production of Alice It should be quite a show.

Kids BUSY KIDS I was recently thinking back to when I was at school and the extra activities I did after school and on weekends. Throughout high school I remember playing a few sports and representing my school team at weekend competitions. We had early training for netball, swimming and tennis when they were in season. I also had a school holiday job on a horse riding farm. No matter how hard I try, I cannot remember doing any extra activities in my primary school years. I went to school, came home, did my homework and I played. I rode my bike in bare feet, made slippery slides out of black plastic and soap suds, visited other kids in the street, swam in the pool and the river, climbed trees, had mulberry fights with my brothers, made cubby houses and then … I would sleep. I was so happy and alive. The one thing that is really sticking in my mind is the amount of opportunities I had

to be free and creative with my family and friends. When I think about our weekends, we had TIME. Dad would throw us around in the pool for hours on end, we played Marco Polo until our fingers and toes were shrivelled, mum would prepare beautiful Sunday roast lunches which dad cooked in the Weber barbecue. B ed : Why can’t I sleep? Maybe I’ll check facebook, emails or watch telly. B ed a g a i n : Toss. Turn. Come on brain switch off. I really need to sleep. I have so much to do tomorrow.

Emma Iwinska In Chinese medicine there are various ways we diagnose and treat insomnia, probably too many to address in one article. So I thought the best use of my words would be to write about the most prevailing lifestyle factor that I see in clinical practice which relates to insomnia and that is the daily sequence I outlined above of being continually busy and living in a state of stress. If you can learn how get out of this cycle, you can vastly improve the quality and quantity of your sleep. There are two main types of insomnia presentations. One is cyclic – it comes and goes, and the other is chronic. Cyclic insomnia There are many triggers to cyclic insomnia. Women may notice that sleep difficulties arise pre-menstrually, with the onset of their period and cyclic insomnia may become chronic during menopause. Men tend to suffer more from work and/or emotional stress, (as do women), and many people find sleep becomes difficult around the full moon. Cyclic insomnia may come and go and is generally fairly manageable for most people.

Chronic insomnia relates to an imbalance in the levels of stress hormones in our body. We become adrenally fatigued and our cortisol levels go through the roof. when we are an insomniac? The first step is to break the cycle of stimulants and business. Practice being peaceful rather than busy. You will still get everything done, just in a much calmer manner. I’ve recently taken to telling people I am peaceful rather than busy when they ask - and this is definitely creating calmness even if it does make me sound like a raging hippy! To break our stress cycle we need to eliminate the stimulants, as they provide short-term gain for long-term pain. No coffee, sugar or chocolate, they over-stimulate our nervous system. Ditch the alcohol, it may help us pass out and fall asleep but it greatly depletes the quality of our sleep. This leads to disturbed sleep with frequent waking, moodiness and fatigue. Stay away from electrical equipment: computers, tvs and phones, as they put our nervous system into overdrive. Pretend you are camping in the evening and try candlelight. Go to bed before 10pm; around 9.30pm is ideal as this maximises the quality yin building time which happens between 11pm and 1am in Chinese medicine.

BANANA FLOWER SALAD Liesl Doery

One of my favourite things about food is that you are forever an apprentice. There is so much to learn and discover; new ingredients and different flavour combinations, or learning more about the health properties of specific ingredients. I am never bored and am constantly surprised to discover a new plant, fruit or vegetable that I’ve never heard of. Even more exciting is when you discover part of a familiar plant that you never knew was edible. Like the good old banana. It has the most beautiful and edible flower bell which hangs off the end of the forming banana hand. When growing bananas, this flower bell is removed so that more of the plant’s nutrients can go into the forming bananas. So rather than just throwing it away, this unusual flower adds an interesting twist to a noodle salad or can become a meal in its own right. Eaten on its own the flower bell has very little taste, but added in with other vegetables and topped with a delicious dressing, it makes a surprisingly light, tasty and nutritious spring salad. Preparing the banana’s bell is quite an involved process that seems hard, but once you try it you realise how easy it actually is. However, if not prepared correctly or the wrong part is eaten, it can cause a stomach ache - so research well and then go for it. There are plenty of step by step instructions that you can access on the internet to guide you through your first banana flower dissection, so get out that scalpel and let’s get cooking!

Herb haven Since the reign and subsequent demise of the sunflowers on our herb spiral, we’ve experienced a great flush of growth. The chickens received the sunflower heads and the stalks were chopped in as mulch. The legumes we used as green manure have also mulched down nicely and the soil on the spiral has become rich and friable. The longer, warmer days and a few showers of rain have produced some beautiful early growth and the herbs that are flourishing there are making it to our plates daily. If you haven’t already discovered the health and taste benefits of herbs, now is a great time to start experimenting. Cooked, raw, in drinks, salads or stews; there’s rarely a bad place to add herbs. Whether you have a dedicated herb spiral, a simple garden bed or a few pots on a window sill, all produce the same results; beautiful, healthy herbs. Regardless of preferred growing method (from seed, seedling or runner) this time of year is great for planting basil, oregano, dill, coriander, chives, thyme, sage and parsley and it’s always a good time for mint and nasturtiums. Nasturtiums are a great allrounder and are one plant I can never imagine being without. Not only are all parts of the plant edible, they are great as cut flowers and will equally brighten up a salad or a table in an instant. Luckily they grow very easily as they make the perfect decoy species. Their sweet, peppery scent is rather irresistible to pests and many will feast on their showy blooms rather than your tasty vegetables. With nothing more than a bit of regular watering they will play defence in the garden on your behalf. Outdoors N ews from the W ildlife C entre The Eumundi Wildlife Centre (EWC) Annual General Meeting was held on 4 October. This is an overview of the President’s Report and other reports presented. President Ken Hodges outlined the financial side of running the centre and also the ramifications now that it is under the umbrella of the RSPCA. Founder Gill Brownhill, has gifted the EWC and the surrounding land to the RSPCA. Gill will continue to live in the small flat attached to the house in perpetuity and will continue her dedicated work for as long as possible. The Wildlife Centre will be regarded as an offshoot of the RSPCA (which is a not for profit organisation and charity) but will continue to be run as an independent organisation. It will undertake its own fundraising and will still require volunteers to help out as before with cage cleaning, feeding and other regular tasks. To assist Gill, the Wildlife Centre now has one fulltime staff member and one part-time person. Also very important is the continued

support of the Noosa District Animal Hospital in Rene St, Noosaville. The Wildlife Centre is extremely grateful to the staff of the vet surgery for their generous assistance with care. We would very much like to increase membership of the Wildlife Centre which provides such an invaluable service to injured and orphaned wildlife on the Coast. The annual membership fee is $25. If you’d like to become a member please call in to the Centre for an application form. As with all charities, there is a Public Fund for tax-deductible donations and every cent is wisely used. Donations can either be made directly to the Wildlife Centre or via the Give Now button on our website, wildliferehab.com.au. Some 1,539 animals were treated during the past year with 60% rehabilitated and released back into the wild. This is better than most similar facilities and is testament to the skill, patience and determination of Gill, staff and volunteers.

Outdoors S P R I NG IN T HE BO TANIC G ARD E N S On the shores of Lake McDonald you will find eight hectares of the colourful Noosa Botanic Gardens in Cooroy. As the weather warms, both plants and animals are actively responding to the changing seasonal conditions. Spring is a season of transition; trees that were bare during winter now display of lush light green foliage and whilst the winter and early spring flowers are mostly spent, a new flush of colour begins with many native flowering plants, like the Tree Waratah (Alloxylon flammeum), prominent at this time of year. As our spring is a dry time of year, there are plants that adapt to this season by dropping their leaves;

some even put on a spectacular flowering display on the leafless branches. The Friends of Noosa Botanic Gardens have a garden maintenance team that work each Thursday from 8am. New members always welcome. 0412 053 281
