At the beginning of the year, we chose representatives from Primary 4 to Secondary Year 1, to collaborate closely with the Green Commission.
These representatives, called Eco-delegates, have been responsible for monitoring energy usage in the school They've checked on things like lights being turned off, proper use of bins, and the use of fans in classrooms, all aimed at reducing energy consumption Additionally, they've been vigilant about identifying and reporting any maintenance issues, such as leaks or animals trapped on the school premises Eco-delegates have also played an active role in school assemblies, sharing important information with other students
During the second term, they've been particularly involved in educating others about the water shortage we're experiencing and suggesting practical steps to conserve water in our daily lives.
A code of conduct is like a set of rules or guidelines that everyone in the school community should follow every day We wanted to update it to incorporate values related to our new eco-garden and other aspects of sustainability, like reducing our carbon footprint, promoting sustainable food practices and encouraging everyone to be more environmentally conscious in their actions.
This update has been warmly welcomed by both students and staff, who appreciate the emphasis on sustainability and the efforts to make our school more eco-friendly.
Here you have all of the information of our updated 2024 Code of Conduct:
Share your light and turn off the lights and fans when not needed
Help recycle paper and supplies for a greener planet
Always choose sustainable and eco-friendly foods
Remember not to waste edible food
Embrace using waste containers properly in your classroom
Tend to our eco-gardens and watch them bloom
Honor and protect the diverse life around us
Eradicate plastic bottles, aluminium foil, plastic bags and single-use waste
Go for responsible consumption every day
Ride the bus, train or bike; reduce your carbon footprint
Enjoy a quieter classroom by reducing noise
Economize and maximise school resources wisely
Nurture student involvement in green projects
This year marked the creation of an Ecological and Edible Garden within our school grounds. Over the course of the first term, we've seen this garden turn into a uniquely diverse space of plants, herbs and flowers. What truly distinguishes this project is the active participation of students across different grades, transforming our garden into an outdoor classroom
Throughout the term, science lessons have taken on a dynamic dimension as students have participated in hands-on activities related to cultivation, biodiversity and biology
This experience has enabled students to gain extensive knowledge and practical skills, reinforcing key concepts learned in the classroom
During the first term, students in Primary 6 worked on a fascinating project that combined different subjects
They learned about the key aspects of maintaining a healthy and sustainable diet and then used this knowledge to create their own menu.
Ms Cintia, the school nurse, helped by explaining the right balance of nutrients needed in a menu After that, the students learned about designing a menu that is good for the environment too, which involves choosing locally grown and seasonal ingredients
They worked in teams for two weeks to come up with their own menus We're delighted to announce that we've chosen a winning menu that meets all these criteria.
This year, we conducted a Land Art activity in the forest with students from Secondary Y1 and Y2.
We fostered a connection with nature by using natural materials We raised environmental awareness about the importance of caring for the environment We also stimulated creativity by challenging students to create artwork with natural elements and promoted teamwork by carrying out Land Art projects.
This provided students with a practical and sensory learning experience in direct contact with nature and teachers taught Land Art in a sustainable and respectful manner
We encouraged reflection on the relationship between art, nature, and society and introduced the notion of ephemeral art, emphasising transience and impermanence All in all, we established an educational experience that combines appreciation of the environment, artistic development and environmental awareness.
To deepen their understanding of our carbon footprint's impact on Earth, Primary 6 and sSecondary Y2 students embarked on an exciting project
They learned about various methods to reduce their carbon footprint, exploring the following critical areas: transportation, fashion, energy, consumption and food. All students were divided into specialised groups and each student researched different ways to reduce their carbon footprint in their area
The culmination of their efforts led to the creation of informative posters, where students illustrated practical ways to minimise their carbon footprint in their chosen area.
These posters are now on display, showcasing the best solutions discovered throughout the project We are certain that this display will inspire other students to take action towards reducing their carbon footprint
This year, we're focusing on educating everyone about how fashion impacts the environment and contributes to our individual carbon footprints.
For the Carnival season, we've encouraged students to create costumes using reused or recycled materials to reduce their carbon footprint. This not only teaches them about sustainability but also boosts their creativity It's the first time we've organised this Sustainable Costume Competition, and it's been a success with both students and teachers
The students who participated showcased impressive creativity, designing costumes that combined sustainability, fashion, and nature to raise awareness about Sustainable Fashion
For the following years, we aim to increase student participation and introduce sustainable fashion projects earlier so students have a better understanding of the topic Ultimately, we want sustainability in fashion to become the norm, and we're working towards everyone embracing this approach to costume-making.
