Our eco-delegates continue to perform outstanding efforts in fostering sustainability within our school environment!

These eco-champions have been diligently monitoring our classrooms, ensuring that energy-consuming devices like fans, screens, and lights are switched off when not in use, and actively participating in properly separating waste and recycling Their commitment to these small but impactful actions significantly reduces our school's carbon footprint.

Moreover, our eco-delegates have gone above and beyond by collaborating with the Green Commission to conduct a comprehensive eco-audit of our school grounds Through their keen observation and proactive approach, they've identified areas for improvement and implemented strategies to enhance our ecofriendly practices

Our eco-delegates embody the spirit of environmental stewardship, constantly seeking opportunities to promote sustainability and actively participating in initiatives that make our school more eco-friendly

On behalf of the entire EISB community, we extend our heartfelt gratitude and appreciation to our eco-delegates for their invaluable contributions Their dedication serves as an inspiration to us all as we strive towards a more sustainable future.

Week, students from Primary 5 and 6, as well as d on an activity guided by Mr Emilio and Mr Luke from the Green Commission They discovered the connections between their food choices and the environment through an interactive workshop

The workshop's main activity involved calculating the carbon footprint of a given menu, encompassing starters, main courses, and desserts. Equipped with informative cards detailing the origins and packaging methods of each ingredient, students embarked on the challenge Working collaboratively within their Houses of House Points, they navigated the complexities of carbon footprint calculation within an environment of teamwork and unity

Throughout the workshop, students gained valuable insights into making eco-conscious food choices. They learned the importance of selecting locally sourced and seasonal foods while avoiding harmful chemicals and pesticides Furthermore, they learned about the advantages of incorporating more plant-based options into their meals, understanding the positive influence on the environment that this change can bring.

By the workshop's conclusion, students had a newfound understanding of how their food choices can shape planet’s health They observed the significant resources, such as water and land, required for food production and the importance of making informed decisions

During Cultural Week, which centred on food, Primary 5 students played a starring role in an engaging activity. In a dynamic and interactive session, students created sustainable and eco-friendly paints and drawing materials

Students used everyday spices such as turmeric, paprika, and cayenne, along with coffee, to produce natural inks. These eco-friendly alternatives sparked creativity while reducing harm to the environment Embracing simplicity, students also turned to charcoal to explore shapes and lines, adding depth and texture to their projects

Immersed in the world of prehistoric paintings and symbols, students embarked on a captivating drawing activity As they recreated ancient artworks, they learned that conventional and polluting paints were unnecessary to unleash their artistic abilities Moreover, they were enchanted by the spicy and exotic aromas that lingered in the air, a testament to the natural ingredients used in their projects!

This hands-on experience not only nurtured creativity but also instilled a profound appreciation for sustainable practices Through art, students discovered the power of mindful consumption and the beauty of harmonising with nature As they proudly showcased their creations, students became ambassadors for a greener and more sustainable future

In the spirit of Cultural Week, let us celebrate the ingenuity and creativity of our students as they continue to explore innovative ways to protect our planet while expressing themselves artistically

As we gear up to celebrate World Environment Day, we must reflect on our collective responsibility to safeguard our planet and take meaningful action towards sustainability The EISB Green Commission presents a comprehensive set of recommendations aimed at fostering environmental stewardship within our school community and beyond

1.

Reduce Plastic Consumption. As custodians of our environment, we must strive to reduce our reliance on disposable plastics EISB advocates for the widespread adoption of reusable products such as water bottles, cloth bags, and food containers Making small changes to our everyday habits, can drastically reduce plastic pollution and help create a healthier planet for future generations.

2

Promote Sustainable Transportation Transportation accounts for a significant portion of carbon emissions, contributing to climate change and air pollution EISB encourages the adoption of sustainable transportation alternatives, including public transit, walking, and cycling By reducing our dependence on private vehicles, we not only mitigate our carbon footprint but also enhance air quality and promote healthier, more livable communities

3

Embrace Composting Composting offers a natural solution to managing organic waste while simultaneously enriching our soil and supporting ecosystem health. EISB advocates for various composting methods that empower individuals and communities to recycle organic materials effectively

By embracing these recommendations and integrating sustainable practices into our daily lives, we can pave the way for a more resilient, vibrant planet Let us seize this opportunity to reaffirm our commitment to environmental conservation and inspire positive change within our school community and beyond.

JUNE 2024 NEWSLETTER

1. Select a container: Choose a suitable container for your compost This can be a wooden box with a lid, a composting barrel, or even a large plastic container. Make sure it has ventilation holes to allow air circulation

2. Location: Place your container in a convenient location in your garden or backyard It must be on a flat and stable surface

3. Base layer: Start with a layer of dry material such as small branches, straw, or dry leaves at the bottom of the container It will help improve drainage and air circulation

4. Add green and brown materials: Composting works best with a mix of nitrogen-rich green materials and carbon-rich brown materials Green materials include kitchen scraps such as fruit and vegetable peelings, freshly cut grass, and fresh plant scraps Brown materials include dried leaves, shredded paper, cardboard, and twigs. Alternate layers of green and brown materials for balance

5. Add water: Keep your compost moist but not soggy Sprinkle a little water between layers of materials to maintain proper humidity. The compost should feel like a wet sponge.

6. Mix and aerate: Stir your compost regularly to help it break down faster and to make sure all materials are well mixed This also helps provide oxygen to microorganisms that break down waste

7. Wait and see: Depending on environmental conditions and the amount of material you add, your compost will be ready in a few months to a year You'll know it's ready when it smells like fresh earth and has a dark, crumbly consistency

And that's it! With these simple steps, you can turn your kitchen and garden waste into valuable compost for your plants Good luck with your home composting!

Together, we can make every day Environment Day!
