EISB Inspiring EISB Sports day By Mr Toni Olivares. Sports coordinator

This year, we could not fail to celebrate our Sports Day. Seeing our students playing, smiling and enjoying themselves, in these difficult times for all of us, reminds us of the importance of physical activity and social relationships between classmates. The moments experienced during these days have given us back the joy that strict covid protocols sometimes make so difficult. Keep active all the time, your health and happiness will thank you for it.

EISB Inspiring Older People's Day By Ms Esther Herranz. General Director

Musical show for Nursery By Ms Anna Nogué

EISB School Psychologists How to deal with your child’s shyness and foster self-confidence By EISBarcelona Educational Psychology Department

It is normal to be shy or scared. Everyone knows that feeling. In some children these feelings might be more strongly present making social situations uncomfortable. As parents we are often quick to say “You shouldn’t be shy!”, but this type of comments are not always helpful and only cause more frustration. Comments that show comprehension and validate their feelings, like “Are you a little shy? That's okay. Let’s try and you’ll see that it will be fine”, are more helpful for your child to break the ice in a new social situation. Children gain self-confidence through experiences of doing something autonomously and succeeding in it. Sometimes we need to give our child a little push to try something new, but when the initiative comes from the child is when their self-confidence really grows. For this reason we want to avoid overprotection and create situations that foster autonomy. For shy children a small step can be an achievement and this needs to be praised. Showing empathy for your child’s shyness does not mean that you accept his or her clingy behaviour. It can be helpful to offer your child choices, for example, to stay close to you, but play a bit alone. When your child is not answering other people’s questions, we often tend to solve this uncomfortable situation by replying in his or her place saying that he or she is shy. This will unfortunately only reinforce the avoidance behaviour and next time your child will be even less likely to speak. It is better to acknowledge that your child might find it a bit difficult to speak now, but that he/she is gaining more confidence to speak. Create opportunities for your child to experience that speaking or more outgoing behaviour leads to winsituations in many ways: feeling proud and relieved, understood, or to obtain something he/she wishes for. If your child wants an ice cream for example, you might agree to buy it if he or she does the talking in the ice cream shop. The way you state your questions, expecting a shorter or longer verbal answer, will also help your child to get over the first barrier and start talking. Asking closed questions and getting a “yes”/“no” answer in public might be a big step already. Next are multiple-choice questions, which your child has to answer with at least one word (“Do you want a chocolate ice-cream or strawberry ice-cream?”) and then open questions (“What ice-cream flavors do you want?”). At this point you don’t accept a non-verbal answer anymore. Anxious children want to know what to expect. Rather than avoiding exposure to a new situation, you just want to prepare your child (what is the new event, who will be there, where it will take place, what the space looks like...). Role games and dividing the roles are also good strategies. For example, agree that you will give the auntie a kiss and say “congratulations” and that your child will hand over the gift. Children learn a lot by watching others and imitating. As parents we also need to be aware that we are the first models that our children copy. So make sure that you also act with normality in new social situations. You can also pair up your child with more outgoing children or organize play dates with close friends and their friends. A last important aspect is to also acknowledge the positive side of being a rather introvert person, for example, they like to observe and think before acting or assess and approach new situations more carefully. Being more introvert or extrovert are personality traits which we are born with and both these traits have their advantages and disadvantages, the difficulties are in the extremes of both sides. It is not about changing your child into an extrovert, but about practicing to overcome their inhibitions in social situations and experience the positive side of being more outgoing.
