Utopia of values, the most important.

Utopia of pedagogical methodology, always adapting to social changes.

Utopia of science, being aware of what we know, but always researching to make new discoveries.

WELCOME The staff of European International School of Barcelona share a vision: to provide our students with international training that will help them become active agents committed to the growth and development of the society they belong to. A diverse, plural and multicultural society. We have developed a special, comprehensive and integrative project based on more than 40 years of experience in the educational field. A space where students, parents and teachers team up to create a learning community whose main aim is to reach our potential in favour of the common good. Welcome to an educational project that goes far beyond the ability to speak five languages fluently. Welcome to a unique space created and made for teaching with an international, global and practical spirit, aimed at satisfying today’s and tomorrow’s needs. In a world that’s becoming more and more complex every day, we want our students to become autonomous and responsible human beings, able to share, study and work here or in any other country in the world. Vocation, experience and commitment are the words that best define our teachers and general staff, all members of a big family united by a common goal: to contribute to the education of your children in order to help them become happy, committed and capable individuals.

ESTHER HERRANZ FRÍAS Chief Executive Officer

Welcome to European International School of Barcelona. We have travelled a very long way since we first opened our doors in 1996. Today we cater for over 1400 boys and girls, who are all encouraged to become global citizens, self-confident in their beliefs and opinions, and yet flexible enough to bridge the gap between different cultures and make the most of all the opportunities that may come their way. Our educational programme is based on three main pillars: academic excellence, education in values and proficiency in languages. Our academic excellence is based on our students achieving the level they require to be able to study the university degree course of their choice, both at home and abroad. However, while academic achievement is important, an education in human values is possibly even more so; we expect our students to become well-balanced in character and ready to accept the challenges and responsibilities that lie ahead. We live in a global society and with this in mind, our students will achieve the highest level possible in the languages they will need, not only in English, but also in German, Chinese and French. The key to our success is our team of teachers; young at heart and dynamic in spirit. European International School of Barcelona’s teachers are highly-qualified and experienced and are in permanent contact with new methods and developments in the teaching profession. European International School of Barcelona follows the official Curriculum (taught mainly through English) but we also introduce the EDEXCEL IGCEs SAT’S during the secondary years. This allows us to welcome boys and girls of over forty different nationalities who will ultimately obtain places at leading universities in Spain, the UK and America, among other countries.

MICHAEL BARRETT Pedagogical Director

40 years of excellence in education. European International School of Barcelona is an educational institution founded in 1996 by a group of education professionals led by the Herranz-Frias family who, after more than 40 years dedicated to teaching and managing schools, created a unique space conceived to develop a different approach to education, specially designed to encourage growth and all-round learning. Our main objective is to foster an education based on values, with a universal and humanistic approach to learning and teaching, focused on a world without borders. We embrace the latest pedagogical techniques to ensure our students are not only competent, but also, and more importantly, good people.

SCHOOL MISSION STATEMENT

A high-quality, modern, international educational plan

Back to the belief in hard work Making independent, responsible and happy individuals

At European International School of Barcelona we prepare our students to achieve excellence in their human and intellectual development. We encourage learning and we foster our students’ natural abilities and gifts, teaching them how to use them for the common good. A teaching method which relies on academic excellence to achieve educational success We teach our students from an international, modern and practical point of view. Because in a world that’s getting more complex every day, we want our students to become autonomous and responsible individuals, able to study or work in any place in the world. From 0 to 18 year-olds, we stand by each one of our students throughout their studies, always ready to encourage them and help them achieve their potential. Our project begins in Infant School and is consolidated in Baccalaureate, participating in a large number of academic, sporting, scientific and public debating events, as well as humanitarian projects.

The backbone of our academic excellence is based on the character-building development of our students. We help them understand the importance of hard-work, team work and social awareness. We work with an active methodology, whose main goal is to help our students to “learn to learn” and enjoy the process, so they can be lifelong learners. We want them to be independent, trustworthy and self-confident; and for them to see the school as the place where they feel appreciated, and they can strengthen their natural abilities, their gifts; basically everything that makes them unique and special.

European International School of Barcelona is at the service of a free and open society, focused on the comprehensive training of the individual, protecting other cultures, religions and races. Our educational programme is based on the principles of Christian humanism whilst respecting other cultures and beliefs

OUR VALUES Educational Community We promote Human Rights, democratic and universal values, solidarity and care for the environment. We believe that a genuine educational community, fully committed to teaching, can only be achieved through honest communication between students, teachers and parents.

The student is the protagonist The student is the main protagonist and thus we work with each one of them on a case by case basis, taking care of their individual psychology and their needs. We believe values such as order, discipline and perseverance are the key to achieving any goal.

Competent people with a positive attitude We seek to foster in our students the pleasure of doing things the right way, taking over responsibilities, being able to overcome any adversity and not fearing failure, for it is an inalienable part of success. All this and more, without giving up on fostering critical thinking in order to help our students become competent spiritually and physically. Always keeping in mind the best future for our students, we believe it is of the utmost importance to share with them our passion for innovation and new technologies. We encourage them to face new challenges, supporting them every step of the way.

INTERNATIONALITY

Learning here to be able to study and work anywhere in the world We provide our students with the knowledge that enables them to work in any environment, anywhere in the world. Our curriculum includes activities, experiences and contests of both a national and international nature. This way, as well as contributing to their academic training, we promote the development of their character.

Languages At European International School of Barcelona we promote the learning of languages from the students’ very first years of life, using language immersion programmes, early stimulation techniques and native teachers. This is the language approach we use in all the educational stages and it allows the students to learn the three common languages of the school (English, Spanish and Catalan) and another two: French from the age of 8 and German or Chinese (optional) which they start aged12.

Exchange programmes and future university preparation Our students participate in annual exchanges with schools from all over Europe and they also take part in international sports competitions (ISSAInternational School Sports Association), Politics (Model United Nations and the Global Young Leaders Conference) and Mathematics (Math Quest Tournament) programmes. Furthermore, we prepare our students for international exams that provide them with worldwide renowned accreditation such as: the IGCSEs, SAT, Trinity Exams, Cambridge Exams, DELF, Goethe Institute and HSK. This way, we make it easier for them to go to any university, at home or abroad, which they may choose in the future.

International Global Citizenship The “Global Citizenship programme requires of students a comprehensive understanding of the community and the impact of international policies. The students will have to prove their analytical and evaluation skills and reflect on several political, environmental, social and technological issues. They will also work on the rights of local communities and their responsibilities and competences when resolving conflicts.

Global Young Leaders Conference (GYLC) The “Global Young Leaders Conference” (GYLC) provides students aged 15-18 with a greater understanding of their roles as global ambassadors, as they analyse concepts surrounding communications, diplomacy, law, human rights, peace, security, economics and the role of the United Nations. The programme takes place in the United States, China or Europe.

United Nations (MUN) The “Model United Nations” is an academic simulation of the United Nations that aims to educate participants about current events, topics in international relations, diplomacy and the United Nations agenda. The participants role-play as diplomats representing a country or NGO in a simulated session of a committee of the United Nations, such as the Security Council or the General Assembly. Our students research a country, take on roles as diplomats, investigate international issues, debate, deliberate, consult and then develop solutions to world problems such as hunger, environmental sustainability, world peace, etc.

EDUCAT STAGES

TIONAL S

We promote early stimulation and curiosity as the first source of knowledge

NURSERY SCHOOL 0 TO 3 YEARS OF AGE

Making the transition from home to school positive and rewarding NURSERY classes (0 to 3 years old) are carefully structured so that the children’s transition from home to school and their subsequent introduction to school activities are positive, rewarding and happy experiences. Parents are encouraged to attend bonding sessions with their children to engage in motor and sensorial activities under the guidance of trained teachers. Those parents who so wish, can tailor their children’s stay in the classroom until they are settled. The timetable incorporates art and craft activities,

singing, role play, soft play, swimming, construction and free play, garden play and stories, all of which are continued throughout the Infant school. The children engage in all activities in English, Spanish and Catalan.

INFANT SCHOOL 3 TO 6 YEARS OF AGE

Learning through acceptance and challenge In Infant School classes teachers work to establish a balanced atmosphere of acceptance and challenge. At this stage, the children need to be composed enough to concentrate, yet free enough to experiment and make mistakes without feeling exposed or self-conscious. We aim to give a firm foundation in the basic skills of language and numbers and do this largely through theme and project work.

Curriculum and activities At the core of our educational policy are the seven areas of learning and development that shape our curriculum. All areas of learning are important and inter-connected. The three prime areas are: Communication and Language; Physical Development; and Personal,

Social and Emotional Development. The four specific areas through which the three prime areas are strengthened and applied are: Literacy; Mathematics; Understanding the World; Expressive Arts and Design.

Learning to understand and use language In both small and large groups, children are encouraged to extend their vocabulary and fluency by talking and listening and by hearing and responding to stories, songs and rhymes. A well-stocked book corner gives every child the opportunity and encouragement to become familiar with books, able to handle them and be aware of their uses, both for reference and as a source of stories and pictures. Likewise, children extend their vocabulary and fluency in Spanish and Catalan which constitutes 20% of the curriculum.

Learning to know ourselves in order to keep growing Within a nurturing environment, children are individually supported in developing confidence, autonomy and self-respect. Through activities, conversation and practical example, they learn acceptable ways to express their own feelings and to have respect for the feelings of others. In programmed Emotional Development workshops, they are encouraged to discuss their ideas, make choices, take risks and show perseverance. All children are given the opportunity to work independently and also to take part in the life of the group, sharing and co-operating with other children and adults. We encourage children to learn about different cultures by celebrating global observance days and festivals, tasting new foods and sharing different traditions from around the world. They are also encouraged to act in environmentally friendly ways by recycling in the classroom, dining room and playground.

Learning to act and be autonomous A range of equipment, including brachiation ladders, and opportunities, both indoors, in our psychomotricity activity room and swimming pool and outdoors, allow children to develop confidence and enjoyment in the use and development of their own bodily skills. A very high level of adult

supervision enables children to safely create and meet physical challenges, while developing increasing skill and control in moving, balancing and climbing. At the same time, children are supported in the development of the fine motor skills required to use tools, including pens, pencils and scissors, and to handle small objects with increasing control and precision.

Learning reading, writing and arithmetic and loving it Reading Initially, we use Tactile letters to teach children the phonetic sounds of the alphabet. This is strengthened with the use of reading programmes, including Oxford Reading Tree literacy resources, to help reinforce the sounds through songs and actions.Using the phonics method, sounds are gradually blended together to form three (and more) letter words. Once a child is comfortable with ‘sounding out’ words, we progress to reading phrases and sentences within our reading programme.

Writing By tracing the Tactile Letter sounds children learn the sound and shape of the letter, and gain muscular memory of the shape as a prelude to writing. Children are helped to understand that

written symbols carry a meaning, to be aware of the purposes of, and when they are ready, to use drawn and written symbols for themselves. Our teachers take great care to ensure that letters and numbers are correctly formed. We encourage a firm pencil grip, creating smooth outlines and good clear shapes.

Mathematics By means of adult-supported practical experience, children become familiar with sorting, matching, ordering, sequencing and counting activities that form the basis of early mathematics. As they use their developing mathematical understanding to solve practical problems, children are assisted to learn and use the vocabulary of mathematics, identifying objects by shape, position, size, volume and number. Songs, games and picture books help children become aware of number sequences and when they are ready, to use simple mathematical operations such as adding, subtraction and measurement.

Learning to discover and take the initiative A safe and stimulating environment allows children to explore and experiment with a range of natural and manufactured materials. They learn to observe the features of objects and substances, recognising differences, patterns and similarities, and to share and record their findings. Children are assisted in exploring and understanding their environment, both

within the group and also in the wider community to learn about animals and plants, and extend their understanding of the world. Through well planned themes and topics the children discuss individual interests, people and communities. A range of safe and well-maintained equipment enables children to extend their technological understanding, using simple tools (iPads) and techniques to achieve their intentions and solve problems.

Learning to think, feel and communicate Children are encouraged to use a wide range of resources in order to express their own ideas and feelings and to construct their individual responses to experience in two and three dimensions. Art equipment, including paint, glue, crayons and pencils as well as natural and discarded resources, provides for open-ended exploration of colour, shape and texture and the development of skills in painting, drawing and collage. Children join in with and respond to music and stories, and there are many opportunities for imaginative role-play, both individually and as part of a group. To deliver this curriculum, we aim to use the best of traditional, Glenn Doman, Montessori and Elinor Goldshmied methods. The children have many opportunities for structured play and free play which are both a very important part of their early learning experiences. In addition through our specialist subjects of Music and Gardening, we seek to develop the children further.

Learning to sing and dance We recognise the importance of music and singing for children’s growth and development. Music in early childhood creates a foundation upon which future music learning is built. Our music programme includes singing, moving, listening, creating, playing instruments, and responding to visual and verbal representations of sound in as many different ways as possible with the intention of building confidence within each child and encouraging them to develop their full potential.

Learning about garden treasures The benefits of gardening with children are enormous. Children grow annual vegetables and sensory plants in our outdoor vegetable patch and learn about our environment, how to solve problems and about health and nutrition.

Parental contact
In educating children of this age, close communication between school and home is very important. A positive relationship between parents and staff is encouraged at all times to ensure we create the best possible environment and cooperation in the interest of the children. The school holds regular Parents’ Evenings but parents are also encouraged to discuss any matters that might affect their child’s welfare and development with the Head Teacher, Infant school psychologist or class teachers. We use observations and records to support the

children in their individual needs and interests. Parents are invited to the Christmas nativity play and the Spring festival annually and are encouraged to visit us to share storytelling, art, music and similar activities during the school year.

Learning healthy eating habits We promote healthy lifestyle by providing delicious and nutritious homemade meals. Our school chefs prepare delicious three-course home-cooked lunches and nutritious afternoon snacks in our fully equipped school kitchen. They use locally grown fresh fruit and vegetables, meat and fish, all sourced from highly reputable suppliers. While children are encouraged to try a variety of foods, we accommodate individual dietary requirements for religious and cultural reasons and to ensure that medical requirements are fulfilled. Our menus which are based on monthly rotation and seasonal can be found on our Parents Portal. In the Nursery school, parents are indicated as to how well your child has eaten that day. Teachers encourage good manners and the correct use of cutlery.

Learning to coexist in the big wide world Students in Foundation classes 1, 2 and 3 go on outings of educational interest. The school provides a packed lunch prepared in the school kitchen which adds to their sense of adventure. All packed lunches are prepared respecting children’s individual dietary needs.

Laying the foundations of a multidisciplinary education open to the world

PRIMARY EDUCATION 6 TO 12 YEARS OF AGE

Primary is one of the most important stages of education, therefore we must provide our students with the basic skills and tools they will need to consolidate Secondary Education. Recognising and putting into practice basic values such as fostering a good relationship among peers, promoting independence and developing good behavioural habits and study habits are essential to achieve our goal. Our educational methodology includes different approaches to teaching (cooperative and collaborative, scientific, systematic study) and different dynamics (group-class, small groups or flexible groupings), besides using Information and Communication Technologies.

Progress monitoring Our professional team of teachers and specialists work very closely in collaboration with the educational psychology department to follow our students’ progress, respecting every student’s learning pace and development process. We believe an independent student is a happy student.

International, human and educational environment We have students from more than 40 different nationalities in our school, and in addition, 50% of our teachers are native English, French, German and Chinese speakers. Our curriculum incorporates the Cambridge International Primary programme, thus enriching our education to a large extent in this stage, no matter what country our students come from. In Primary School, we continue with an English immersion programme. Primary 3 students are introduced to another foreign language: French.

Cambridge International Primary Programme At the European International School of Barcelona, we aim to provide a world class curriculum which develops skills and understanding in English, Mathematics and Science at Primary level. Cambridge International Primary Programme comes from one of the world´s leading assessment organizations and provides an excellent framework for learning in the primary years and designs a solid foundation for your child´s future. The programme is rigorous and well structured, serving our students to become successful global citizens. The CIPP is designed for children aged 5 to 11 and provides learning objectives for each year of your child´s primary education. Its step-by-step programme of learning takes children from the start

of primary education to completion, before they then move on to secondary education. In the final year of primary education, students will take the Cambridge International Primary Checkpoint and will then be issued with a primary Certificate of Achievement by University of Cambridge International Examinations. The internationally designed curriculum does not simply demand recalling knowledge. More importantly, it develops the acquisition of critical thinking and problem solving skills.

English as a first & second language This curriculum develops a learner´s speaking, listening, reading and writing skills in English. It has been developed in conjunction with Cambridge English Language Assessment and is based on the Council of Europe´s Common European Framework of Reference for Languages. (CEFR), and is used across the world to map learner´s progress in English.

Mathematics

Project Based Learning

The mathematics curriculum framework explores five content areas: number, geometry, measure, handling data and problem solving. This curriculum focuses on principles, patterns, systems, functions and relationships so that learners can apply their mathematical knowledge and develop a holistic understanding of the subject.

Both oral presentations and interdisciplinary projects play a very important role in the comprehensive education of students. Our main goal is for students to achieve an appropriate intellectual, physical, artistic, scientific, social, emotional and affective development. These projects are carried out using a constructive approach within the framework of Multiple Intelligences.

Science This curriculum framework covers four content areas: scientific enquiry, biology, chemistry and physics. Scientific enquiry is about considering ideas, evaluating evidence, planning, investigating, recording and analysing date. Environmental awareness and some history of science are also part of the curriculum.

Being evaluated in order to learn We carry out a diagnostic, regulatory and certifying evaluation. We help the student to take charge of their own learning process, thus learning to indentify their own strengths and weaknesses in order for them to be effective in the use of their own abilities. A direct and systematic observation constitutes the backbone of the evaluation process. The certifying evaluation takes place in the school and outside European ISB, and includes both national and international examinations: - National exams: Basic competencies - International exams: Trinity Oral exams and Cambridge Checkpoint in Primary 6, DELF exams.

Homeroom We start the day with the “Homeroom” activity: a time for students to meet with their tutor and ask questions about activities, to reinforce behaviour rules, talk about current news. The way we feel or think at the beginning of the day is vital to face a great day at school.

Education in Values Programme Based on tolerance and respect for other beliefs, this programme is a core subject worked on in both the “Values workshop” and in the Education in Values area (either Ethics or Religion). Also, our students have the option to prepare for their First Communion and Confirmation, within the Pastoral Care Department.

Attention to each one of our students’ individual needs The work we carry out in collaboration with the Educational Psychology Department allows us to attend to the individual needs of each student, respecting their personal development and learning pace. We have a “Personalized extension plan” (TAG programme) and support programmes (dyslexia, ADHD).

Additional academic activities Our students take part in many different activites, whose main goal is to complete their development process: Two cultural excursions each term, Events that foster the learning of new knowledge ( Science Week, Cultural Week, Sant Jordi, Literary Contest, Primary Festival…) Events that foster education in values (Assemblies, Charity work, Reading Buddies) Events that promote internationality (Maths Quest). Educational talks: (Relationships education Guidance. Internet Safety).

We instil the importance of hard work in our students as a means to achieve academic excellence

SECONDARY EDUCATION 12 TO 16 YEARS OF AGE

The main goal of our Secondary School educational project is to teach our students the importance of hard work in order to achieve academic excellence. Our main objective is to motivate our students to want to learn and enjoy the process. We want them to be lifelong learners, autonomous and selfconfident.

In this stage, emotional aspects and physical changes faced by students are of key importance. They need to learn that their personal development is the basis for their academic attainment, and that in many cases the former takes precedence over the latter. The tutor plays a very important role in guiding our students through this process.

The study of foreign languages

IGCSE: going to University abroad

The Secondary Education curriculum includes the following qualifications: Cambridge First Certificate, Cambridge Advanced and Proficiency (English), DELF A1/B1/B2 (French), GOETHE A2/B1/B2 (German) and HSK A2/B2 (Chinese).

Our school is the only non-British school in Spain authorised to administer the IGCSE exams. These exams are carried out in English and applied to the following subjects: Mathematics, Technology, Arts, English, Global Citizenship and Sciences. These exams provide our students with renowned accreditation that facilitates the standardisation process to enroll in any European University.

The only Spanish school with the IGCSE certification that facilitates access to European universities

Attention to diversity

Future entrepreneurs

Secondary School is an educational stage where, just like in other stages, student diversity regarding their learning process must be addressed immediately and with determination. We have special educational programmes for our gifted students, for new foreign students, for students talented in sports or art activities, and also support programmes for students with difficulties or other challenges that affect their learning process.

In the final year of Secondary School, ESO 4, we introduce the educational subject of “Entrepreneurship. Our main aim is to promote personal initiative and to encourage our students to make contact with the business world. We foster their creative potential and we show our students all the different options available for the future.

Exchange Programme

Tutorial action plan.

Our Exchange Programme collaborates with schools from France, United Kingdom, Netherlands and Germany amongst others. The main objective of this programme is, besides making the most of an international experience and contributing to the development of our students’ character, to carry out a multidisciplinary project (Synthesis Project) which will allow them to research, identify and experience everything they learnt about in class.

The tutor is the academic counsellor and the person responsible for transmitting knowledge to students, and they work in close collaboration with the families and the educational staff. The tutor has a very important role in the development of the character of their students, and especially in such a complex phase that is adolescence. The tutor is the backbone of the student’s educational process: he/she is the person who contributes the most to the comprehensive development of our students.

Community Service We teach our students that they can change the world. Every year they are in charge of a charitable project, in collaboration with the main NGO of our country and abroad, such as: UNICEF, Cáritas, Vicente Ferrer and Doctors without Borders. The participation of the students in this programme is assessed in the “Tutoría” subject.

We encourage our students to develop their abilities and talents to the fullest to ensure future success here and anywhere else in the world

BACCALAUREATE 16 TO 18 YEARS OF AGE

100% of our Baccalaureate students pass Selectivity exams and 86% of them are accepted at their first choice of University. We cannot forget either that they can speak 5 languages and are prepared to study or work anywhere in the world.

100% of our Baccalaureate students pass Selectivity exams

Our main goal in this stage is for students to get to university with the best training possible. We believe this can only be achieved by fostering good work and study habits, and knowing the importance of hard work. Also we try to open as many doors as possible to our students, so they can be exposed to as many different experiences as possible, all of them integrated in a solid and comprehensive educational project, supported by the best educational team.

Work and autonomy habits In the Tutorial classes we foster their work habits and their independence, key elements for a good preparation before university. Within the tutorial action plan framework, our students attend a series of career guidance seminars given by former students, parents, professionals in the field and guidance counsellors.

Designing your own Baccalaureate Flexibile itineraries and international option

Our students can study the Spanish Baccalaureate in any of the different modalities: Science and Technology, Humanities and Social Sciences, Arts. As well as the American High School Diploma and the International A-levels.

Promoting reading habits, CinefĂłrum, Poetry Club Besides the aesthetic pleasure and cultural value of literature, we like to motivate our students to read as a means of self-discovery and knowledge of the world. To the same end, we encourage our students to participate in poetry reading workshops and cinema forums, where they can view and comment on films, thus expanding on their cultural knowledge and improving their oral expression and debating skills.

Our “open reading project offers students the option to choose the book they want to read. From our point of view, giving the students the power to decide is essential in order for them to develop good reading habits, especially in those stages where it is crucial that students do not see reading as an imposition but rather as a choice that contributes to the search for their adult identity.

We bring you university closer We have collaboration agreements with different universities, which allow our students to enjoy experiences and make contacts that will help them make an informed choice about their potential universities. We offer workshops and seminars carried out by both national and international universities, where our students will not only be able to just learn, but to also get a glimpse of the university life ahead of them.

Combining high performance athletes with an international academic programme

PROGRAMMES FOR ATHLETES One of the main focuses of European ISB is to give all our students the opportunity to achieve their goals, both personal and academic. For our students focused on high sports performance, we offer three academic itineraries: International A Levels (face-to-face classes), University of Nebraska High School (face-to-face and online programme) and the national curriculum (face-to-face). These programmes combine technical and tactical training and high-level physical training. With a tailor-made educational system that meets the needs of each player, respecting their practice

schedule and competition dates, we help young talents become professional athletes, and we make sure they have the support of experts in both the sporting and the academic fields. The American High School Diploma is the program that best suits these students. Based on credits, it allows them the flexibility to either concentrate on study or on their game, depending on the time of the school year.

We offer The University of Nebraska High Scool (UNHS) Diploma. The subjects, issued by UNHS that are offered according to transcript evaluation are:

Our facilities are designed to meet the needs of a high quality education

FACILITIES

School life demands comfortable spaces where the student feels at ease, self-confident and safe. Large windows that let natural sunlight in; a heating system that prevents temperature differences, spacious classrooms, furniture adapted to the different ages of our students; playground areas full of colour; open and practical lunch areas; well-equipped laboratories; an auditorium with capacity for 1000 people; sports hall, football field and swimming pool.

Technology

All our classrooms are equipped with interactive whiteboards, from 3rd grade of Primary we work with our own educational platform, and we have a computer laboratory. The school buildings have fibre optic connection. We can access the Internet by cable or Wi-fi anywhere in the school.

Taking care of our environment Our facilities use solar energy and we reuse the swimming pool water for sewage purposes and to water the football field. We are in constant development to implement all new advances in ecology and sustainability.

Sports play a very important role in our education

SPORTS

It keeps our students in excellent shape; it educates them in values, and promotes teamwork and selfimprovement. We are members of the ISSA (International Schools Sports Association), an organization which allows us to achieve three main goals: to teach our students educational values through sport competitions, to promote cultural exchanges and to encourage school families to participate in the project by hosting international students taking part in these activities, the result being a unique and enriching experience for everyone.

World class sports facilities Sports hall, swimming pool, football field and fitness centre are the perfect setting to ensure a comprehensive physical education: football, handball, basketball, tennis, badminton, five-a-side football, volleyball, swimming, synchronised swimming, waterpolo.

Pre-sports The Sports School is the first contact for infant students into the world of sports. In the last year, P5, we introduce students to sports, which allows us to detect which students may be more talented or may have more interest in one sport or another (tennis, basketball, hockey and football).

Swimming At European International School of Barcelona, swimming is an essential part of the sports curriculum of our students. Swimming is part of P.E. for our students from 2 to 14 years of age. High quality facilities and an experienced team of coaches are the key elements behind our competitive and synchronised swimming teams.

Europa Sports Centre Our dedication to sports, and the important role they play in the education of our children, has allowed us to develop the Europa Sports Centre, a proper Sports Club in charge of all the affiliated competitions that take place in our country, and all the different afterschool sporting activities. The club is also open to school families and external members.

Mens sana in corpore sano

SPORTS AND HEALTHY EDUCATION FOR A BETTER LIFE

Without a doubt, physical activity is a distinguishing feature in our school. We are fully aware that the healthy habits we instill in our students will aid them towards better personal development during their school years and thereon. A teaching centre that cares for the integral development of our students, we aim for the balance between mind and body as yet another tool in helping them achieve both academic and personal goals. Beginning in Nursery School, our students learn to move and adapt to the environment through free, organized and soft play activities outdoors and also indoors in our fully equipped psychomotricity activity room. Our students’ psychomotricity skills are complemented with swimming classes held in our indoor, ozone swimming pool complex.

Sweat and Smile We encourage our students to view exercise positively and to practice it enthusiastically. Physical activity has enormous benefits on students’ happiness which is the direct result of endorphins released after exercise.

Nutrition food Healthy culinary Excellence

Because we understand the importance of our students’ diet, our chefs adapt the menu to the different needs of each educational stage. We have two main objectives: 1. to ensure our students maintain a healthy diet 2. to teach our students lifelong healthy eating habits.

PE4LIFE In the Secondary school, our Physical Education programme (PE4LIFE: Physical Education for Life) is based on the positive relationship between physical activity, physical fitness and academic performance. The aerobic exercise of our daily PE sessions improves brain blood flow and improves the generation of neuronal connections, the outcome of which is improved brain performance. Increased well-being, reduced anxiety, increased mood, improved self-esteem and boosted brain power are some of the benefits that daily physical activity entails. Furthermore, this practice of physical movement occurs in our high school classes by “Brain Breaks. This entails lessons being interrupted for 2-3 minute activities whose aim it is to get students refocused and energized.

After-school activities, cultural celebrations, conferences, exhibitions, trips... A wide variety of possibilities

AFTER-SCHOOL ACTIVITIES At European International School of Barcelona we offer a wide range of activities to provide students with the opportunity to enjoy their favourite activity without having to leave the school. Football, dance, basketball, music, cookery classes, swimming, drama, rhythmic gymnastics, synchronized swimming, triathlon, arts or judo... Renowned Sports and Arts Schools that take part in national and international competitions. These activities are very important. They are more than just after-school activities; they provide an authentic sport and artistic experience. Our afterschool activities are open to students from other schools, which provides us with large groups to compete in any discipline. We regularly organise conferences, exhibitions and roundtables for both students and parents.

Music School Individual classes: musical language and instruments such as: guitar, piano, flute, cello, violin, viola and many more…All classes take place on the school premises and are taught by expert teachers.

Social work and workshops Throughout the year we celebrate Saint Cecilia, Saint George, Halloween…and we are also lucky enough to count on other internal musical and choir performances.

Chess club Creativity, decision-making skills and critical thinking, mathematical skills, memory, concentration, ethics, justice… Nowadays no one doubts the great educational benefits of playing chess for the comprehensive development of a person. Our goal is to promote the interest in this discipline, and to make it as easy as possible for students to participate and learn. This is why we have classes available to our students during their breaks to play chess and we also have the chess as an afterschool activity.

Art / Arts programmes

Music in all its forms

To educate in creativity will prepare our students for future changes and will help them become original, flexible individuals with initiative, self-confidence, and able to face any challenges that may come their way either in their school or everyday life. The arts play a vital role in the education of our students, for it is the ignition that sparks the natural creativity we all have within us and it stimulates our individual qualities, social and moral values and our self-confidence. European International School of Barcelona and the Arts Department’s main goal is, by means of the arts syllabus and the different after-school activities, to provide students with the opportunity to discover and develop creative projects that will contribute gradually to building their own identity, establishing emotional relationships, developing their skills and appreciating their social, cultural and natural environment. The backbone elements of this department are: Music School, Classical Ballet School, Funky and Hip Hop, Arts and Drama.

We use music to communicate ideas, feelings and emotions; the impact of music in social communication; musical performances as a means of communication among different cultures‌All of this is what our students learn in the performances that take place throughout the year, in different school events and festivals. Rock Pop is also part of our syllabus. Thus, all our students with musical interests have the opportunity to develop their abilities and start a Rock Pop music band.

Instrument technique and performances Our students can choose the instrument they like the most: piano, violin, cello, flute, classical guitar, electric guitar, drums, etc. As a Trinity College Registered Examination Centre, we offer official examinations that will provide our students with an international accreditation and recognition. Students’ musical performances are an enriching experience for both the audience and the students performing.

Choir

Ballet

In the after-school choir classes, for Primary 5 & 6, Secondary School and Baccalaureate students, we work on voice techniques and different musical styles. Through this workshop we are able to work and study a repertoire of different songs and styles, aimed at satisfying the interests, motivations and abilities of our students. Our students will learn songs from different countries, using the different languages taught at school, and making the most of the opportunity to sing in the different international exchanges that take place throughout the year; as well as in external performances such as in El Palau de la MĂşsica Catalana.

The study of ballet brings students closer to an art where body and soul merge in search of perfection. Ballet has its own language. With ballet we communicate emotions, ideas and feelings that cannot be translated into words. Through dancing we get closer to other artistic expressions to which ballet is closely related, such as: music, theatre, poetry, painting, sculpture, etc. Ballet allows us to appreciate the emotions we feel through rhythm, movement and sound.

Classical Ballet: Royal Academy of Dance European International School of Barcelona follows the Royal Academy of Dance curriculum, in accordance with our international educational programme. We offer the students the opportunity to obtain official diplomas in the different levels of examinations, a way to stimulate and reward their hard work. The Royal Academy of Dance syllabus is structured progressively, from Pre-Primary (6 years of age), Primary to Grade VIII. Every year the students have the opportunity to take the RAD exams which take place in the school.

Arts and Crafts Through the education of art, students will learn how to use the most important elements of visual and plastic languages. Paint is used as a tool to foster artistic sensitivity, communication and creativity. We believe interdisciplinary projects are very important. The work carried out by our arts students is usually used by their schoolmates in theatre plays, festivals and other events that take place in the school (Sant Jordi, Santa Cecilia, etc).

Drama: Theatre and musical theatre Theatre and dramatic play contribute to the intellectual development of children, improving abilities such as imagination, observation or creativity and oral and body expression. Symbolic play is a necessary part of a child’s language development. When children engage in dramatic play they deepen their understanding of the world and develop skills that will serve them throughout their lives. Musical theatre is taught in English and is aimed at students from Primary 3 to 6 and ESO 1 and 2. It musical theatre is growing in prominence in our country and its educational relevance lies in the fact that it includes several disciplines: performing, singing, body expression, music, dancing etc. An adventure: scripts, lights, costumes, atrezzo, mysteries, laughter, tears, fears, last minute jitters, friendship, love‌this is an adventure for those young, brave, restless hearts who wish to find something beyond the ideal standards, something that will transport them and satisfy their curiosity.

Football School

Rhythmic Gymnastics

For students from 6 to 18 years of age and divided into four basic stages: Introduction Stages I & II and Development & Specialisation Stages I & II. There are two football modules: 7-a-side Football and 11-a-side Football. Both school and affiliated teams, national and international, participate in “School Games”. The competition group which is part of the “European International Sports Programme” participates in the “ISSA” tournament both for the boys’ 11-a-side and 7-a-side girls’ team.

From the introduction level to the technical classes, our students will learn the basic rhythmic gymnastics’ techniques and its most important elements (ropes, ball, hoops, ribbons and clubs) while improving their hand-foot coordination, balance, strength and basic motor skills and also having a great time dancing to the rhythm of the music and preparing different choreographies.

Basketball School

Triathlon is one of the most complete sports there is, for it involves three different disciplines: running, swimming and cycling. Triathlon races vary in distances depending on the ages of the participants, and the format depends on the season: from the mountain duathlon (running and mountain biking), or the road duathlon, followed by the aquathlon running and swimming) and the triathlon. Our triathlon programme is adapted to the age and level of our students.

European International School of Barcelona and the UESC Foundation are working together in the Basketball School sporting Project. During the first stage of the project, students from 6 to 12 years of age will be able to participate in the “School Games” organised by the OMET and during the second stage, students from 13 to 20 years of age, will be able to compete in affiliated competitions, organized by the Federació Catalana de Bàsquet. Also, the students in the competition group, which belongs to our “International Sports Programme”, take part in the ISSA tournament that takes place once a year (both the girls’ and boys’ team).

Triathlon School

Judo School

Nursery swimming

Japanese martial art, combat and olympic sport whose main object is to either throw or take down one’s opponent to the ground. The UNESCO declared judo the best introductory sport for children and young people. The Judo School is divided into three groups: Introduction to Judo: this group is for students from 6 to 9 years of age, where they acquire basic motor skills by learning to use their feet on the floor. Advanced group: from 10 to 13 years of age, our students will develop some throwing techniques with hands, waist, legs and feet, as well as floor control techniques. Judo Mastery Course: 14 years and above, our students will master all the throwing techniques, floor control techniques, joint locks and chokeholds.

Motor development in water for children aged 1 and 2 years is essential for balanced growth. In our school we know that among the benefits that this activity allows the baby, we must highlight the important psychomotor development; acquiring greater motor coordination, proprioceptive localization and kinesthetic integration. Furthermore it encourages movements and motor experiences that lead to an increase of the motor repertoire, while helping to strengthen the cardiothoracic system. Nonetheless, it is important to emphasise the regulation of muscle tone which is very important for the static, the balance and the movement which finally results in an improvement in emotional relationships. Swimming for babies is one of the best methods of early stimulation because, in a play and pleasure environment, it brings important benefits to the baby due to the physical components (water, movement, heat) this activity provides.

Synchronised Swimming The synchronised swimming programme is for students from the age of 7 who fulfill the necessary requirements accordingly set by the Technical Director. Our students will have a great time using the elements of ballet to create beautiful choreographies in the water where they will dance to the rhythm of the music.

Experimenting is an essential part of science

STEAM & ROBOTICS (SCIENCE/TECHNOLOGY/ENGINEERING/ART/MATHEMATICS & ROBOTICS)

Our curriculum is based on the idea of educating students in five specific disciplines — science, technology, engineering, mathematics & robotics — STEAM in an interdisciplinary and applied approach. Rather than teach the five disciplines as separate and discrete subjects, STEAM & robotics integrate them into a cohesive learning paradigm based on realworld applications. What separates STEAM from the traditional science and math education is the blended learning environment and showing students how the scientific method can be applied to everyday life in everythng. It teaches students computational thinking and focuses on the real world applications of problem solving.

Hands on Activities European ISB students carry out several research projects throughout the year. In order to provide them with all the tools necessary to understand the actual process involved, they have the school’s scientific laboratories at their disposal. These research projects are what we call “hands on activities”: experiencebased activities that help the students to understand the concepts by witnessing the process. At European International School of Barcelona we have 3 laboratories: one for Primary students and 2 for Secondary students (physics and geology lab and chemistry and biology lab). All students, beginning in the Infant School, carry out experiencebased activities on a regular basis. The subject of Technology in Secondary School includes robotics and computer programming in its syllabus.

Science Week and Science and Technology Fair In November we take part in the international celebration of Science Week, whose main goal is to reflect on scientific topics and carry out crosscurricular projects that raise awareness that science is everywhere. The whole educational community, from Infant School to Baccalaureate, takes part in these activities. From P3 to Baccalaureate, all the students are proud to exhibit their projects in the Science and Technology Fair. One of the main objectives of the fair is to awaken in students an interest in pursuing a career in the scientific or technological field, and for students to learn to solve easy questions following the steps of the scientific method.

Weather Station We have at our students’ disposal a weather station that allows them to gather data of meteorological variables to analyse them and draw their own conclusions. This way, we encourage such important values as teamwork, responsibility and independence.

School garden The School garden is one of our key educational tools, for it allows us to work concepts such us biodiversity, ecosystems and environmental education in a fun, dynamic and enjoyable way.

Our students take part in educational exchanges with schools all over Europe, giving them the opportunity to learn new ways of learning

CULTURAL, LINGUISTIC, ACADEMIC AND SCIENTIFIC EXPERIENCES ABROAD Conferences, Visits, Cultural and Science trips The conferences “Joves i Ciència E2C3” are organized by CatalunyaCaixa, and provide our students with the opportunity to work side by side with scientists from all over the world. We also participate in the Chemistry Olympics and the Nutrivideo contest, organised by the Universidad de Navarra. The “Imagine your Future” junior camp is organised by the IQS and aimed at ESO 3 students. Our students also go on different cultural excursions and educational trips throughout the year, where they can experience science outside our facilities. These educational field trips also give valuable hands on experience in those points worked on in class. We go to museums, exhibitions, conferences and we also visit factories and production plants.

Cooperation Agreements We work in collaboration with several scientific organisations such as the IQS, Pendulum or Robotika among others.

Exchange Our students take part in educational exchanges with schools all over Europe, giving them the opportunity to learn new ways of learning We teach our students how to become confident individuals capable of adapting to and living in all the environments world-wide. In order to do so, students participate in annual exchanges with schools from Netherlands, Denmark, Switzerland, Belgium, Italy, France, Germany and the United Kingdom among others. Every year, nearly 500 ESO students travel to these schools, where they carry out their Research Project. At the same time, we welcome and host their exchange partners when they come to our country. Furthermore, our students participate regularly in international sports competitions (ISSA) political debating events (MUN,EYP) and ECIS Maths Quest Tournaments.

Specific programmes to take care of the needs of each one of our students.

SCHOOL PSYCHOLOGY DEPARTMENT At European International School of Barcelona, we have a team of three school psychologists and a speech therapist for the sole purpose of giving support to our students and families. The team meets and coordinates regularly with teachers and course coordinators to closely monitor the study plans and overall progress of our students in all areas (academic, behavioural, social and emotional), helping them to be autonomous and respecting developmental stages. At European International School of Barcelona, we believe that all children can learn according to different learning styles. We elaborate individual education plans and provide direct attention to all diversities, offering support to students, families and teachers.

The services provided by our School Psychologists help our school to successfully: - Aid families by giving them practical guidelines for their child’s learning and mental health needs: sleep, nutrition, early stimulation, enuresis, setting limits, behaviour modification, family conflicts, adolescence, social skills, anxiety, fears, jealousy, parent- child communication, etc. - Support Multiple Intelligences. - Promote peer tutoring to enhance cooperative learning, peer learning, and other collaborative learning opportunities. - Encourage respect and the value of diversity, positive peer relationships and social problemsolving through talks and programs, for example TEI (“Tutoría Entre Iguales”). - Provide study skills training, including goal setting and study habits.

- Assist children with language-related learning issues, such as speaking, listening and writing. - Provide professional orientation including GCSE, PAU and SAT preparation and introduction to university admissions. - Organise educational talks to promote positive coping skills relating to different topics such as the internet, food, emotional intelligence, healthy habits, etc. to prevent disorders and improve resilience. - Modify and adapt the curriculum and plan appropriate individualized education programs for students with mild to moderate learning difference needs (ADHD, giftedness, dyslexia, new students, etc.).

Gifted and Talented Room We have a “Personalised Extension Plan programme specially designed for gifted and talented students. Families, students and the school meet to analyse the best way to help the student achieve their highest potential through a curricular adaptation. In this space students are able to develop research projects which they later share with their classmates.

CREATING GLOBAL CITIZENS

We prepare our students with the skills and knowledge to engage in a rapidly changing world where technology is driving new ways of studying & working and relationships are no longer bound by borders. To be successful in this new connected world our students are graduating globally aware, skilled in communication and well educated. Ensuring our students develop global citizenship understanding and are connected with the world around them, we embed an international perspective to learning across the curriculum. An international approach to education recognises that for students to have the global skills they need, they must have

access to quality languages education and exposure to intercultural experiences throughout their schooling, which occurs throughout our student´s school lives at European International School of Barcelona. Languages education provides a vehicle for increasing our students’ connections to the wider world and learning up to five languages makes sure our students have the communication skills needed to engage in the global society as real global citizens.
