John A. Padilla, AIA The American Institute of Architects 2018 Western Mountain Region Silver Medal Submittal

Preface

“John Padilla, AIA is my hero. He not only represents, but was the bellwether voice for a groundswell in the profession: the hispanic architect in the southwest. His commitment to profession and architects who take a different path anticipated the current zeitgeist. He has led the profession from Alaska to Tierra del Fuego and is in my mind, a treasure of his Region.” Jeff Potter, FAIA 2012 President of the AIA 2004 President of the Texas Society of Architects Honorary Fellow of the Japanese Institute of Architects

Section 3 | Statement of Contributions

John A. Padilla, AIA leads by example supporting

and encouraging others to reach their full potential and capabilities in leadership roles with the AIA. His efforts to have all members voices heard are evident in his commitment to Diversity and Inclusion and working to advance and celebrate the mission and vision of the AIA. With a dedication that began in 1979 while at the University of Houston College of Architecture as a member of the AIAS Chapter, John and a dedicated group of architecture students hosted the AIAS annual meeting Forum 1979. After a successful conference, he continued to lead the chapter and was awarded the Alpha Rho Chi “Leadership Service Merit” medal in 1980. Upon completion of his education and years of working and starting a family in Houston, Texas, John moved his family to Santa Fe, New Mexico in 1991. That’s where his story of substantial and positive contributions to local, state, regional chapters and AIA National really begins. He started as a representative from AIA Santa Fe to the AIA New Mexico board where he was responsible for communications to and from local chapter and state chapters. John moved to lead AIA Santa Fe as President in 2002. He joined the WMR 2002 Conference planning team as the Tradeshow and Expo chair and produced a very successful event that actively engaged exhibitors with attendees. To engage local chapter members in more than just a monthly meeting John established the AIA Santa Fe 5X5 Summer event that is an opportunity for five Architect members to present their work for five minutes at an event that is social and educational and supports fellowship and networking for the chapter. This program continues annually at exciting architectural sites in Santa Fe. Recognizing a void for local architects to have their work acknowledged John established the AIA Santa Fe Design Awards program that continues annually to recognize excellence in Architecture by AIA Santa Fe members. He continues as a resource to the chapter serving as an Advisor to the Board sharing his knowledge and experience fromservice on the Regional and National Board of Directors. In 2013 John and a

6

group of dedicated AIA Santa Fe architects formed the 501C3 Friend’s of Architecture Santa Fe whose mission is outreach and education of the public exposing them to architecture and the Value of Design. John’s commitment to community is evident in his citizen-architect roles serving the City of Santa Fe. He’s served as a member of the Historic Districts Review Board (1996-2001) and served as Co-chair during his tenure. He served as Architect member of the City’s Planning Commission and served as Secretary of the Summary Committee (2013-2015). In 2009 he was appointed to and continues to serve as a member of the Mayor’s Community Development Commission. John served as President–elect in 2002 and as President in 2003 of AIA NM. As he did in 2002, John was a part of the successful WMR Conference planning team in 2008 and 2014 and served as the conference Tradeshow and Expo chairman and produced two very successful events for exhibitors and attendees. As the State Government Network Representative for NM from 2004-2006 he was responsible for coordinating the state’s advocacy efforts with the AIA National network of state representatives advocating for the profession of architecture. John was awarded the AIA New Mexico Architects Medal in 2004 for his dedication, service and leadership of the AIA in New Mexico. John was invited to serve as the Chair for the 2002 AIA Colorado Design Awards program, his first opportunity to serve the members of the Western Mountain Region. Representing AIA NM, he served as a member of the WMR Honors Awards Jury from 20042005 and served as its Chair in 2006. With a desire and passion to lead the region he was elected to the Board of the Western Mountain Region and served as Treasure from 2005-2006. This experience allowed John to understand the needs of the region and challenges facing the large geographical area that constitute the WMR. This personal knowledge and understanding of the region motivated John to seek the Regional Director position where he served in 2007- 2009. As the Junior Regional Director, John established and secured funding for a retreat where regional leadership convenes to discuss strategies to best serve the members of the region. This event continues annually to allow leadership which turns over annually

to review regional goals, national initiatives along with success stories and challenges at the state and local components. His commitment to better communication between the components at meetings of the WMR included Leadership Discussions where local Chapter leaders shared their victories and challenges and state Component leaders shared their victories and challenges allowing for best practices to be openly shared. John served as a WMR Regional Director on the AIA National Board from 2007-2009. He was appointed as AIA’s representative to the American Architectural Foundation serving as a Board of Regent where he was AIA’s voice for design, architectural education and the minority and disadvantaged scholarships for freshmen in college funded for five years by the AAF. John served on the Board Diversity Committee whose goals were to identify the obstacles to underrepresented groups in architectural education programs, licensure and membership in the AIA. As part of the Diversity & Inclusion efforts John worked to develop the multiFORMity 2008 Diversity Plenary that focused on improving representation and diversity in architecture education and practice. Out of this plenary came the GATEWAY COMMITMENT that was endorsed 100% by the AIA Board of Directors committing to develop a profession that reflects the diversity of the communities, users and the clients we serve. In 2007, he established the SHADOW AN ARCHITECT program at the AIA National Convention in San Antonio. This program paired National Board members and volunteers with K-8, High School and Junior College students to experience convention with an architect as their mentor for a day. This program continues at Convention and Grassroots introducing underrepresented students to Architects that look like them. Elected Vice President to the National Board, serving from 2011-2012 he served as Chairman of the Board Community Committee where he coordinated Member Resources and Component Services. Leading the efforts of the AIA Membership Committee his work played a key role with Institute’s initial repositioning efforts. The committee’s work included emeritus membership to emerging professionals with a focus on member benefits and value. The adopted positions helped broaden the AIA’s membership base of emerging professionals with local components embracing

emerging professionals in leadership roles on their boards. As AIA’s representative to NCARB’s IDP Committee in 2011 he worked to improve the IDP experience requirements to reflect how practice is today. Changes developed under his leadership included credits for Construction Site experience, and revisions to allow summer and seasonal experience hours count towards IDP credit. In 2013 John Co-chaired the NCARB Internship Advisory Committee where he led the discussion establishing improvements of the Emerging Professionals Companion, reinvention of the IDP Firm Award, and changes to the IDP reporting requirements (six month rule) for interns. John served as Secretary on the AIA National Board of Directors and served as a member of the Strategic Council (2015-2016). The office of Secretary connected John directly to the Members and their Components addressing member’s requests for Dues Waivers, CEU Waivers, Emeritus requests, Chapter assignments, Chapter reorganization, and International Chapter development. The AIA’s repositioning efforts relied on the Secretary to guide the Institute through unfamiliar territory as our Components were required to meet Core Member Services in 2016 and provide minimum services to their members. John is responsible for insuring the Institute can further its role in service to our members while maintaining a strong and relevant AIA. John currently serves as AIA’s representative to the Pan American Federation of Associations of Architects (FPAA) and will serve as Vice-President of the North Region (Canada, USA and Mexico) in 2018 and 2020. As the Institute’s representative to FPAA John is a part of regionalized body of Pan American Architects with a representation of regions that currently comprises 32 National Sections that are grouped in five geographical regions: Northern Region, Central America Region, Caribbean Region, Andean Region and Southern Cone Region. FPAA is an institution with a mission of connecting the America’s through sharing knowledge and support, representing the aspirations of the National Sections that compose it. John works as AIA’s liaison with Architects of the Americas sharing business best practices, cultural and artistic efforts, sustainability and urban design concepts and strategies. Working with FPAA we share experiences and collaborate with educational authorities for the teaching of Architecture, in order to contribute to the broader training of their graduates and the agencies teachers.

Deuschle Residence Santa Fe, NM This renovation and addition located in Santa Fe’s Historic District was a total renovation and addition to a historic family residence. The small family residence had fallen into disrepair and the new Owners desire was to update the residence with a whole house renovation, alterations, and addition. The project included a stand alone Casita that provided a guest residence and a studio/office for the Owners. The main house renovations and additions were restricted by maximum height limitations and other design standards set by the historic districts development codes. Creative design solutions allowed the main house to achieve a two story addition while meeting the restrictive height standards. The Casita allowed for comfortably accommodating guests in their own unit while allowing an area for the studio/office utilized by the Owners.

Shibumi Ramen Noodles Santa Fe, NM This adaptive reuse of a historic residential structure is located in Santa Fe’s Historic District. The design program was to renovate the residence to accommodate the new ramen restaurant. The design solution was to open up the structure’s interior and create a free-flowing kitchen and dining room experience with an Asian décor. The restaurant is intimate allowing the patrons to interact directly with the kitchen preparing their noodle dishes while they enjoy a sake drink.

Zane Bennett Contemporary Art Gallery Santa Fe, NM This adaptive reuse located in Santa Fe’s Historic District was a total renovation of a 10,000-square foot historic retail and office building. The Owner’s desire was to renovate the building to accommodate their contemporary art gallery in the historic Railyard District. The design solution for the historic publicly visible elevations was to preserve the historic facades and update the historic openings and upper level balcony railings. The design concept required the total demolition of the building’s interior structure to build a “building within the building” preserving the historic outer shell. The design includes multiple gallery spaces, art storage spaces, kitchen, retail shop, administrative spaces, atrium display space with glass stairs and upper catwalk connecting the gallery and office areas.

“It was a pleasure working with John Padilla as our architect. He really listened to our ideas and needs. He then took that information and made it more practical, efficient and creative. Our final design is extraordinary. It’s a building that our visitors walk into and say, “What an incredible space!” Sandy Zane Zane Bennett Contemporary Art

The Lofts Santa Fe, NM This project located in Santa Fe, NM was one of the first Live/Work condominium projects in the city. The LOFTS set the standards for this type of project and generated other successful projects responding to the City’s need for live/work spaces for professionals and artists in Santa Fe. It generated investment opportunities, home ownership opportunities and production and retail sites for artists and entrepreneurs.

University of Phoenix Santa Fe, NM This 20,000 square foot commercial office building located in Santa Fe is anchored by the University of Phoenix with a space that includes administrative offices as well as classroom spaces. The building’s design style is a contemporary interpretation of the Pueblo Revival set in the context of a commercial development. The building has a diverse mix of tenants that includes Doctors of Oriental Medicine, Home Health Care Providers, Attorneys, Realtors and Design Professionals.

12

Nambe’ Dallas, TX Located in NorthPark Center in Dallas, Texas this retail tenant improvement was Nambe’s first foray into the retail store market outside of New Mexico. Designed in collaboration with Canadian-American industrial designer Karim Rashid out of New York, the project’s design concept and approach was inspired by one of Nambe’s signature pieces “The Wave” and is reflected in the store’s displays. Although the design was forward thinking, it needed to be refined to meet the Owners desire to display their metal housewares on free floating and illuminated displays. Innovative materials for structure and lighting were incorporated to create a space, where the displays are organic and appear to float within the standard retail cube.

Pan American Federation of Associations of Architects

FPAA consists of five regions with representatives from 33 countries within the Americas and the Caribbean and includes more than 600,000 architects that are influential in their relative fields. The executive committee is made up of elected representatives from governments, universities, NGOs and businesses from the region who are active in the field of architecture.

Founded in 1950 and headquartered in Montevideo, Uruguay, the Pan American Federation of Associations of Architects is a nonprofit organization whose mission is to unite Architectural organizations from all parts of North, South and Central America including the Caribbean across all racial, religious or political boundaries.

Representing the AIA, John serves as the Vice-President of the North Region which includes the United States, Mexico and Canada. He will continue to represent the United States and the AIA for four years at conferences and Executive Committee meetings throughout Latin America and the Caribbean.

Shadow an Architect AIA National Convention The “Shadow an Architect” program began at the 2007 AIA Convention in San Antonio, Texas when John, returning to his hometown, began working with co-chair Clarence Kwan, AIA and the AIA staff to host 58 minority architecture students from Fox Tech High School and San Antonio College, both attended by John. The initiative brought together members of the AIA Board of Directors, the Diversity Committee, and the Young Architects Forum (YAF) while reaching out to under-represented students of architecture. The project’s success inspired AIA Presidents RK Stuart, FAIA and Marshall Purnell, FAIA to request that it become an annual event at all future Conventions. Organizers are working to grant this and promote the value of pursuing careers in architecture and related professions to under-represented populations of our profession.

“The most important thing we wanted to achieve was to have students from inner-city Schools and minority communities, meet eye-to-eye with architects who “looked like them” to see that there are real possibilities of pursuing architecture as a career. We are hoping to create a legacy program to occur at all future national conventions,” Padilla told AIArchitect last year.

CANstruction Now in its fourth year, CANstruction® Santa Fe, is an AIA Santa Fe program developed by John and produced in partnership with Santa Fe Place Mall to benefit The Food Depot of Santa Fe. The event brings together a food drive, advocacy for hunger issues and a competition in a special art show for the community and The Food Depot. The Lifesize “CAN-sculptures” are built completely

18

out of non-perishable food items based on annual themes. Since its inception in 2015, there have been more than 102,000 cans donated to feed the hungry in Northern New Mexico. John’s efforts with this program inspire our emerging professionals to develop their leadership roles and engage them in coordinating the planning and implementation efforts with our Architect build teams, partners and sponsors to make the annual CANstruction® event a huge annual success.

AIA Leadership John’s professional leadership positions have included President of AIA Santa Fe and AIA New Mexico, and has served as Treasurer and Director of the AIA Western Mountain Region Council. As a member of the National Board of Directors of the AIA he served as the 2011-12 Vice-President and 2015-16 Secretary. He is currently serving as the AIA’s representative to the Pan American Federation of Associations of Architects (FPAA) representing the North Region (Canada, USA, Mexico). He serves as its Vice-President through 2020.

“When I think of the importance and significance of the WMR Silver Medal, the first person that comes to mind is John Padilla! I have had the privilege of knowing him for more than 15 years and he never shys away from a task, an issue or any opportunity to serve this profession or the Institute. He has served with distinction at every level - locally, regionally and nationally. John is the AIA. I only wish we had more members like him.” Tina Litteral, Hon. July 20, 2018 Chaiman James Horn, AIA 2018 AIA Western Mountain Region Honors Awards Jury c/o The AIA Western Mountain Region Re:

John Padilla, AIA Candidate for the 2018 AIA Western Mountain Region Silver Medal Award

Dear Chairman Horn, Leadership is about people who see the world as a place to engage in rather than withdraw from and their careers as a means to invest in their profession and not just to extract a paycheck. John Padilla, AIA is an architect who has modeled his career by this statement. By making a difference through his actions John has gained the utmost respect and admiration throughout the AIA as an individual dedicated to the ideals of commitment to service, integrity and leadership. As a leader throughout all component levels of the AIA, John has played an influential role in the AIA’s policy on improving and implementing diversity and inclusion. While many within the profession had chosen to ignore the issue of diversity, John had the courage to lead the discussion to further the advancement of making the profession more inclusive. This work has created programs across the country that have placed countless minority architects and emerging professionals into prominent roles in the profession, business and the community. His many years of dedicated work in taking on the issue of diversity has a significant impact to further the goal of the AIA to become more representative of the society we serve. As a colleague of mine on the AIA National Board Class of 2009 it was evident early on that John had those special attributes as a leader who makes the quality of life in our communities better for everyone. Whether serving as Vice President and Secretary of the AIA National Board of Directors, or on countless community boards and commissions in Santa Fe, or in a variety of positions in the WMR, or as an AIA representative to the Federation of Pan American Architects John has made the architecture profession stronger and more influential. Most impressive is his work as the founder of the AIA “Shadow an Architect” Program at the AIA National Convention that pairs students with architects to provide mentorship by introducing underrepresented students to architects that look like them. John’s passion for leadership in all these areas embodies the ideals of “service beyond self." Regardless of who you are, where you live, your professional life as an architect has been touched in some way by John’s efforts. John truly has represented the WMR throughout his career as an “Ambassador of Excellence." The magnitude of his accomplishments is nothing less than remarkable. Few people in their lifetime are able to affect positive change within their normal realm of influence. Fewer still have been able to accomplish this in the broader societal spectrum. Through his dedication to mentorship, diversity and leadership on a Regional, National and International stage John has indeed achieved this rare feat. For his wide reaching and numerous accomplishments in a lifetime of tireless leadership in the AIA, the profession and the community, John Padilla, AIA has earned your highest consideration to be selected as the recipient of the 2018 AIA Western Mountain Region Silver Medal Award. July 20, 2018 Honor Awards Jury 2018 Honor Awards Program AIA Western Mountain Region Council RE: John A. Padilla, AIA, 2018 AIA Western Mountain Region Silver Medal Award Dear Members of the Jury: It is with great pleasure that I offer this letter of recommendation for John A. Padilla, AIA to receive the 2018 AIA WMR Silver Medal. I have known John for the past decade as a colleague, collaborator, and confidant. Over this span of time, I have witness his transformational leadership, passionate service, and limitless advocacy within and for the American Institute of Architects at the local, state, regional and national levels. During the past decade, our relationship, which began as fellow board members (Class of ’09) at the Institute, has grown into a deep and respectful brotherhood. Our ethnic blue-collar backgrounds bear many similarities. John is a stalwart advocate for the role that Junior Colleges must play in providing access to the profession for underrepresented groups especially minorities. I have been fortunate to serve with many talented architects within the Institute, and I can unequivocally state that John is one of the finest for his exceptional service that impacted the professional experience of professionals, emerging architects, and students. He is an established and very successful small firm practitioner in Santa Fe (no small feat in and of itself) and has simultaneously dedicating countless hours toward successfully serving and advancing the Institute. Perhaps no one has more of an impactful record of continuous service over an intense period of time as John. He has sacrificed, met and exceeded the obligations of every local, regional and national office to which he has been elected or appointed. John has been a National Director, National Vice President and National Secretary during a highly volatile and transformative decade. The Institute’s emergence as a more streamlined, effective and efficient organization is due in no small part to John’s leadership. John is a level-headed, and decisive, team player who does not seek to draw attention to himself through bluster and grandstanding. On the contrary; he has, by example, inspired others to follow his example of honest selfless servant leadership. John’s and my careers at the Institute were closely aligned during our Regional Directorships. We advocated for under represented minorities and the under served. We worked inside and outside the “system” to make sure that the “minority options” were carefully articulated and acted upon…we did so in an effective yet inoffensive manner. To that end, John was called upon to run for and serve in national office. I continued my service along a different path that would eventually lead to my election as Chancellor of the College of Fellows, (an honor for which John is more than qualified). My recommendation of John Padilla, AIA would be incomplete without acknowledging his passion, devotion and contagious enthusiasm for our profession and the Institute. As we embark upon a new chapter in the history of the AIA, we must seek and celebrate professionals who embody passion, commitment and excitement for design excellence, and the people who create it. John’s accomplishments, service, and advocacy, and creativity emphasize and foster individual and collective empowerment and exemplify the future of our Institute. For all these reasons and many more, I strongly recommend him for the 2018 AIA WMR Silver Medal. Sincerely,

William J. Stanley III, FAIA, NOMAC 2014 Chancellor, AIA College of Fellows ARCHITECTURE INTERIORS PLANNING CONSTRUCTION MANAGEMENT 1056 SPRING STREET, NW ATLANTA, GEORGIA 30309-3818 404-876-3055 FAX: 404-876-6841

July 22, 2018 Mr. James Horn, AIA, Chair 2018 AIA WMR Awards Jury c/o AIA Western Mountain Region Council Re:

Nomination for the Western Mountain Region Silver Medal – John A. Padilla, AIA

Dear Mr. Horn and Members of the Awards Jury: John Padilla and I go back a long way together as we both started our leadership careers in the Western Mountain Region in the late 90’s – John with AIA Santa Fe and I with AIA Colorado. Over many years of conferences, meetings, and conference calls, I became convinced that John was a special leader who was going to make a tremendous impact on our profession and Institute. From this experience, I have had the good fortune to get to know John very well and to work with him on innumerable occasions. Hence, I believe I am uniquely qualified to make this unhesitant recommendation for the award of the 2018 WMR Silver Medal to John A. Padilla, AIA. Our first opportunity to actively work together was as members of the 2005 WMR Executive Committee with John serving as WMR Treasurer and I as WMR Secretary. This was followed by service together on the AIA National Board of Directors as WMR Regional Directors from 2007 through 2009. John followed this experience by serving as an AIA National Vice President and as AIA National Secretary. As should be evident from the details of John’s submittal, John has exceptional leadership and service records at the local, regional, and national levels of the American Institute of Architects. The important conclusion to make from this is that John Padilla represents the best candidate I can think of who truly exemplifies the objectives and intent of the WMR Silver Medal. When the Award criteria asks for significant contributions to the Institute, the profession, and the citizens of the region, few can compete with John’s achievements at every level of service. This is especially true when you consider that John’s efforts at each and every level have truly transcended all boundaries to create unprecedented positive results. John has been unstinting and tireless in his efforts to enhance the Institute and profession we all love. I hope that you will seriously consider John’s nomination for this award that he so richly deserves and award him this important recognition. It is an honor and a privilege to have this opportunity to hopefully reinforce John’s nomination from AIA Santa Fe. Respectfully,

Stephen K. Loos, FAIA Architect 460 Steamboat Valley Road P.O. Box 1334 Lyons, Colorado 80540 303-823-5854 stephen. Loos.faia@gmail.com

July 20, 2018 To: James Horn, AIA, Chair, 2018 AIA Western Mountain Region Honors Awards Jury Re: John Padilla, AIA - Candidate for the 2018 AIA Western Mountain Region Silver Medal Award To members of the Awards Jury, It is my pleasure to wholeheartedly recommend John A. Padilla, AIA for the 2018 WMR Silver Medal, as it would not be an exaggeration to say that John has been the backbone, and now, institutional memory of our local chapter. His continuous dedication to the well being of the profession has led John to represent our interests locally and further afield at the state, regional, national and international level. At his core, he is a voice for the small-town, sole practitioner and advocate for the underrepresented in education and practice, developing the MultiFORM Diversity Plenary and subsequent Gateway Commitment for the AIA National Board. John has been involved in the leadership and operation of AIA Santa Fe for two decades, serving on all aspects of the Executive Board and developing programs such as the 5x5 and CANstruction. His concern for the community at large is reflected as one of the founders and active members of our community outreach arm, Friends of Architecture and as an ongoing presence on local government bodies including the Planning Commission, Historic Design Review Board and the Community Development Commission. As the current president of AIA Santa Fe, perhaps the contribution that I am most grateful for is, even as he has turned his attention to the larger stages of WMR, AIA National and the Pan American Federation of Architects, John has always made time to advise our local board, attending meetings with the regularity of the official members. His experience with the structure of institutions and his gift for gently guiding those who have not navigated these waters before is priceless. Some of us are content to be observers, and others are able to make their voices heard in conversations about the profession and the greater community, but it is an exceptional individual who can make the commitment to continuously show up, leading by example, tirelessly contributing to the discourse and programs that strengthen us. John is one of those exceptional people and we are so fortunate, as architects, to have him in our corner. Sincerely,

Hugh MacPherson Driscoll, AIA President, AIA Santa Fe, 2018

July 21, 2018 Mr. James Horn, AIA Chair 2018 AIA Western Mountain Region Honors Awards Jury c/o The AIA Western Mountain Region Re: John Padilla, AIA Candidate for the 2018 AIA Western Mountain Region Silver Medal Award Dear Mr. Horn: It is my sincere pleasure to write in support of John Padilla, AIA for the AIA Western Mountain Region Silver Medal Award. I first got to know John during my term as chair of the AIA National Membership Committee. As then AIA National Vice President, John graciously agreed to serve with me as we re-established the committee, playing an important role in the lead up to the Institute’s repositioning efforts. The Committee’s work had a tremendous impact on how the Institute has focused on key membership issues, ranging from emeritus membership to emerging professionals, to member benefit and value. Together John and I presented to the AIA National Board our committee’s recommendations to more effectively engage emerging professionals, both in the AIA and not yet in the AIA, and the reasons it is so vitally important. As a result, the Institute adopted provisions to allow for graduates of non-accredited degree programs to join the AIA as Associate Members, thus broadening our membership base of emerging professionals. Our work together on the Committee, in support of repositioning the Institute, also encouraged many local components to embrace leadership of emerging professionals on their boards, which many have done. John has maintained a steady and influential presence at the national, and now international level in service-leadership roles for many years. His contributions to these roles are marked by consistent dedication, sage advice, and an acute ability to relate with and communicate with people of diverse backgrounds. As Secretary of the Institute, John served in an intimate and influential role in guiding the AIA through the Repositioning initiative, and his leadership has had a profound effect on the success of Repositioning and the Institute’s ability to further its role as the leading professional membership association for architects. It is very little wonder why John was then chosen as a representative to the FPAA on behalf of AIA National. John’s career is also marked by his legacy as a mentor to the next generation of architects, a fact which I can personally attest to. When applying for the AIA Young Architect Award, John was the first person I called to ask for support. Without hesitation, and despite his newly appointed role as Institute Secretary, John volunteered to not just act as my sponsor, but to also coach me through the process with regular conference calls and as the peer review of my entire submission packet. I was successful because of John, and as a result my professional career took a giant leap forward. Having worked with and known John for many years I can fully attest to his devotion to our profession, his love of working with other people in pursuit of a common goal, and his passion for mentorship of the next generation of architects. His body of work has led to a brighter future for our profession, and I respectfully request that you give strong consideration to John Padilla, AIA for the 2018 AIA Western Mountain Region Silver Medal Award. Respectfully,

Derek C. Webb, AIA, LEED AP BD+C Principal Design, Environment, and Knowledge Studio pllc 2018 AIA Houston President 2015 AIA National Young Architect 2012-2014 Chair, AIA National Membership Committee
