ELEMENTAL BODY TYPES

“People come in all shapes and sizes, this has become a staple saying in modern society. Using the fundamentals in ancient Chinese philosophy we have broken down the different body types. Earth, Metal, Water, Wood, and fire, these are the 5 elemental energies that balance our world. They have the power to bring harmony as well as auspicious energies. In the following articles, we have broken down all 5 forms and body types that associate with them. 16

Using the Body Source Code App gives you access to material on relating and corresponding certain colours and outfits that will introduce positive energies in your life. Understanding your fundamental body type can allow you to seek out form flattering garments. Combined, these tools will produce amazing results that let you take control of the energies you introduce to the world.

FASHION & LIVING SUMMER 2015

METAL The metal-type person, like a knife, is sharp and thin enough to slice the densest of objects. Metal people have thin lips, thin eyelids with an overall thin body type. Metal faces tend to be rectangular with pointy well defined areas, with a pointed chin and even, proportionate features. The gait of metal people will be light and lively. The body of the metal person will have a slim body with graceful and lively movements. The complexion of the metal person will pale when they’re angry or emotional. They are great with words and have a persuasive demeanor. The voice of the metal type will be clear with a bell like chime resonating from the throat.

WATER The water element person is identifiable with a thicker stature, thick eyelids and jaw. The face will be rounded, with thick eyebrows and hair. They will be wider at the base compared to the top with a full body. These elemental people will have a calmer more relaxed low tone. Their complexion is slightly darker and will darken when angry or emotional. This water individual will walk at a slower pace, their feet will drag more often than not. 17

CORE FASHION CONCEPTS THEORY

WOOD The wood type person can be easily identified with long tree-like limbs, long torsos, legs and fingers. When this element is dominant it will register on the body with a long face, wide shoulders and narrow torsos. Someone belonging to this element will have a greencomplexion and a solemn looking demeanor. You will notice a wood dominant person’s speech to be blunt and short, with words sounding “thin”, coming through the teeth. The walk of the wood-type person will be noisy with a marching rhythm, lifting the feet and letting them drop. 18

FASHION & LIVING SUMMER 2015

FIRE Like the fire from a candle or from the fire place, the fire element in its viciousness has the ability to burn through the highest of ceilings. The pointed tips of these flames is a great metaphor for the type of bodies that fire type people have. You can imagine these types of people shaped like a “torch”. Where there are slimmer aspects at the top, narrow though the bottom and slightly flared in the mid-section. Faces are round and full, while hair is slightly thinner. The body is plump with a medium build with sloped shoulders. You may find the voice of those that fall under the fire element to be higher pitched with a broken quality. They are light-footed with a fast walking pace.

EARTH Earth type people have a down to earth quality, thus there are more connected to the earth. You will find a shorter torso, neck and fingers when it comes to earth people. The Earth-type person can be identified by the three ‘shorts’: the body is short, the neck is short, and the fingers are short. They have a square-like face, larger ears and a rounded nose. Muscles are prominent in the shoulders, waist and back. The complexion of the earth type will have a yellow tone, when earth type people become unhappy this will change into a withered yellow tone. With the connection to the earth, those of this element are heavy footed with strength in each step they take. Earth types will have a naturally louder voice, with a lower pitch tone. 19

Burton’s creation, a stunning sweep of ivory satin gazar hand appliqued with lace, epitomized the heritage of British couture. Drawing upon skills and fabrics from across the United Kingdom, the designer, reflecting the bride’s wishes, paid tribute to the arts and crafts movement. Originating in the 19th century, this design movement advocated truth to the materials, traditional craftsmanship, attention to detail, and simplicity of the form. The pure lines and romantic detailing of Burton’s dress respectfully interpreted that tradition through a unique cut, contemporary techniques of construction and modern fabrics.

VITAMIN A Retinol, commonly referred to as Vitamin A, helps your eyes adjust to changes in light when you come in from outside and it helps your eyes moist. Vitamin A comes from animal foods, and some plant based foods (beta-carotene) which then your body converts to Vitamin A. It has antioxidant properties that will neutralize free radicals commonly known as the cancer causing cells. It is recommended for those who may have coronary artery disease, and vision problems. Vitamin A is a great supplement for those wishing to improve their eyesight or those who have cataracts. Topical and oral supplements are common prescription treatments for acne and other skin conditions, including wrinkles. Vitamin A is a fat soluble vitamin which is stored in the fat tissues of the body for a few days up to six months. Health problems may arise when you have too much of this fat - soluble vitamin stored in your liver. Taking huge doses will lead to toxicity within the body. However, eating a diet of foods rich in these vitamins won’t cause damage. Overconsumption has been linked with an increased risk of fractures in postmenopausal women. There is a parallel between vitamin A and the Yin fire element, both help the function of your eyes and heart. An analysis of the foods responsible for the function of these bodily systems is the same as those belonging to the fire element.

Sources of Vitamin A

• Beef liver • Egg yolk • Cheddar cheese • Fortified milk Top sources of beta-carotene include: • Sweet potato • Carrots • Pumpkin • Cantaloupe • Broccoli • Apricots • Spinach and collard greens

VITAMIN C

Vitamin C is a water-soluble vitamin that is necessary for normal growth and development. Water-soluble vitamins dissolve in water. Leftover amounts of the vitamin leave the body through the urine. That means you need a continuous supply of such vitamins in your diet.

Vitamin C is important for the growth and repair of the tissues in your body. It is used to form proteins to make skin, tendons, ligaments, and blood vessels. A common use for this vitamin is for those who want to speed up the healing process of wounds, especially scar tissue. Vitamin C repairs and maintains cartilage, bones and teeth. Vitamin C is one of many antioxidants. Antioxidants are nutrients that block some of the damage caused by free radicals (cancer causing cells). This is especially important for those who are exposed to tobacco smoke and radiation. It is the buildup of free radicals over time that is responsible for the aging process. It is important to note that the human body is unable to make this vitamin on its own, furthermore it doesn’t store it as well. Therefore, include plenty of this vitamin in your daily diet. For many years, vitamin C has been a popular remedy for the common cold: • Research shows that for most people, vitamin C supplements or vitamin C-rich foods do not reduce the risk of getting the common cold. • However, people who take vitamin C supplements regularly might have slightly shorter colds or somewhat milder symptoms. • Taking a vitamin C supplement after a cold starts does not appear to be helpful.
