The urgent care center is part of Evergreen’s new medical center in Redmond, which also offers primary care, specialty care and a 24/7 emergency department all under one roof. For Calkins, it turned out to be the ideal place, where he received priority treatment because of his symptoms. “I suspected appendicitis,” urgent care physician Dr. Karri Chinn recalls, “so Matt was quickly taken to the emergency department (ED), just two floors away, for a confirming CT scan.” Dr. Chinn relayed her thinking to Dr. Neil Donner, who took over Calkins’ care in the ED. When the CT results confirmed appendicitis, Dr. Donner alerted surgeon Dr. Marion Johnson at Evergreen Hospital. Calkins was transported via ambulance to Evergreen and was prepped for surgery. He was back home less than 24 hours later. Making Mammography More Convenient...

Exceptional Care – The Latest Technology

“ With this new 3-D machine I got the all-clear right away.” Carolyn Brock is a pioneer. The 45-year-old married mother of two made history at Evergreen in July when she became the first to experience the new 3-dimensional mammography known as tomosynthesis. It’s Evergreen’s newest diagnostic tool to fight breast cancer.

Because we can’t prevent breast cancer yet, the Evergreen Breast Health Center places a high priority on staying at the forefront of technology that help ensure early detection. In 1998, Evergreen was the first medical center in the state to use computer-aided detection in mammography, and in 2006 we were the first comprehensive breast center to provide digital mammography on the Eastside. 3-D Mammography (Tomosynthesis) Today, Evergreen is at the forefront again, being the first hospital in King County to offer the revolutionary 3-dimensional mammogram known as tomosynthesis. This new technology produces clear, highly focused computerized 3-D images that can reveal cancers not seen by regular 2-D mammography. In addition to finding cancers earlier, the precision of the 3-D technology decreases the number of women who need callbacks for additional evaluation by 20 to 40 percent. 3D mammography benefits all screening mammography patients, and is especially beneficial for:

Carolyn Brock

Bothell

Brock’s journey began when her primary care provider, Suzan Watanabe, ARNP, saw something of concern with Brock’s left breast and referred her to the Evergreen Breast Health Center for a mammogram. “They first did a regular mammogram, but the results weren’t clear because of my dense breast tissue,” Brock recalls. “That’s when we did the 3-dimensional mammogram.” THE ADVANTAGE OF 3-D TECHNOLOGY “3-dimensional mammography, called tomosynthesis, is similar to a conventional mammogram as far as the patient is concerned,” explains radiologist Dr. Kara Carlson, medical director of the Evergreen Breast Health Center. “The breast is positioned the same way; then the breast is compressed to disperse the breast tissue.”

The difference is in the remarkable 3-D technology. “The X-ray tube moves in an arc around the breast, collecting multiple images during the exam,” Dr. Carlson adds. “That information, collected at one-millimeter intervals throughout the breast, is then sent to a computer, which assembles them to produce clear, highly focused 3-dimensional images. Those images can reveal cancers not seen by regular 2-dimensional mammograms.”

Kara Carlson, MD

There are several advantages to 3-dimensional mammography, with the first being its ability to detect breast cancer at its earliest, most treatable stages. Evergreen’s survival rates are already impressive, beating national and state standards; the addition of 3-dimensional

mammography holds the promise of offering women an even more hopeful future. Another advantage is peace of mind. “If I’d only had a routine mammogram, I definitely would have been called back because of my dense breast tissue,” Brock reveals. “That would have meant days of worry and waiting. With this new 3-D machine, I got the all-clear right away...and not having to worry is a big thing!” Dr. Carlson shares Brock’s enthusiasm. “Because the 3-D images are so precise, we’re seeing about a 40 percent decrease in the number of women having to come back for additional views, which is remarkable.” EVERGREEN AT THE FOREFRONT OF TECHNOLOGY 3-dimensional mammography (tomosynthesis) was only approved by the FDA in February 2011 ... so there was no money budgeted to add the new diagnostic tool this year. That’s when the community generously stepped forward at April’s Evergreen Gala and raised the money needed to purchase the new technology. Less than three months later, Carolyn Brock was getting the first 3-dimensional scan. Evergreen’s is the first Breast Health Center in the Puget Sound area to offer 3-dimensional mammography. “Washington state has one of the highest incidences of breast cancer in the nation,” Dr. Carlson states, “so I appreciate that Evergreen stays very much at the forefront of technology, especially when it comes to breast imaging detection. We are committed to providing the best care and technology for our patients.” For more information on 3-dimensional mammography, see stories on page 5, visit www.evergreenhospital.org/breastcenter or call the Evergreen Healthline at 425.899.3000.

Fortunately for Wilcox, treatment was available close to home at Evergreen’s award-winning Pulmonary Care Center.

The center treats all diseases of the respiratory system, and includes specialists in pulmonary medicine, sleep medicine, respiratory therapy and exercise physiology – all working together with the latest technology to expedite diagnosis and treatment. PULMONARY REHABILITATION Jayne Wilcox also took advantage of the center’s new pulmonary rehabilitation program, which helps patients improve their quality of life while increasing their strength and stamina. “Pulmonary rehab is one of the few things we can do for people with stable lung disease to help them live better lives,” explains Dr. Aileen Mickey, the rehab center’s medical director. “We empower them to take charge of their own disease.” That empowerment comes from an innovative 12-week program that combines exercise and education. The program meets Aileen Mickey, MD, and twice a week, and each session includes Dave Engle an hour of monitored exercise designed according to the lung limitations of each participant. The exercises strengthen the muscles used to breathe while also improving overall fitness. One weekly session also includes an hour of education that helps participants better understand and manage their chronic lung disease.

“It’s a lot of lifestyle work,” says Dave Engle, the exercise physiologist who worked with Jayne Wilcox. “We teach people how to take better care of themselves with exercise, diet and medications – working within the precautions they need.” Engle says the results are very gratifying. “It’s typical during our 12-week program that people improve their functional capacity by nearly 50 percent.” Dr. Mickey adds that pulmonary rehab also decreases the number of doctor’s office visits, emergency department visits and hospital admissions. EMOTIONAL SUPPORT Evergreen’s pulmonary rehab program also addresses the emotional component, which may be just as important as exercise and education. “A huge part of lung disease is depression and anxiety,” Dr. Mickey shares. “When you can’t breathe, you get anxious. It’s one of the worst feelings in the world to be short of breath.” The group setting lets participants see they aren’t alone in their struggles. “They can rely on each other for support and exchange ideas,” she notes. Wilcox’s class formed such a tight bond that they continue to meet as a group for the center’s maintenance classes. Jayne Wilcox says the exercise program has helped her lose 15 pounds and improve her core muscles, which helps her breathe a little better. She’s also eating healthier, thanks to the nutrition classes. “I never imagined that three hours a week could make such a big difference in my life,” she says, smiling. For more information, visit www.evergreenhospital.org/pulmonary or call 425.899.6972.

Recovery from a severe knee injury takes three things: a skilled surgeon, a highly motivated patient, and a physical therapist who knows when to push and when to hold back. Sophie’s surgeon, Dr. Pierce Scranton, practices at Orthopedics International’s Kirkland office. In his 18 years as team physician for the Seattle Seahawks, Dr. Scranton has seen his share of ACL repairs. “For any level of athlete, blowing out your knee is very serious,” he shares. “But for young high school athletes like Sophie, it can be devastating, because sports is their whole life, their circle of friends, their social network. It’s very important to give these young athletes their lives back.” Dr. Scranton used minimally invasive surgery to repair Sophie’s torn ACL. “Minimally invasive techniques not only mean the surgery is done in about an hour as an outpatient,” he explains, “but recovery and rehabilitation become a bit easier, as well.” But not all minimally invasive surgeries are the same. “There are at least 20 different techniques,” Dr. Scranton adds, “and it’s important that the surgeons select the correct technique for each individual patient’s needs. We have really exceptional surgeons at Evergreen who provide superior sports medicine care.” SPORTS-SPECIFIC REHAB The second key member of Sophie’s team was physical therapist Andy Dujenski from Evergreen Rehabilitation Services. “We started Sophie with a basic rehabilitation program to get things moving again soon after surgery,” he explains. “Then we transitioned her to sports-specific rehab – a program uniquely

Woodinville tailored to Sophie’s desire to return to the soccer field.” Dujenski plays soccer, which gave him insight into some of the therapies she’d need to get back on the field.

As experts in human movement, Dujenski and the entire rehabilitation staff are able to break down the stages of any activity, whether it’s football, skiing, hiking or even gardening, and design a rehabilitation program specific to that activity. “A person’s activity, whatever it is, is important to them,” he says, “and we take it very seriously in working with them to get back to that.” Sophie came to outpatient rehab two or three times a week at first, finally tapering off to a home program designed to not only get her back on the field, but to help prevent any problems down the road. A SUCCESSFUL PARTNERSHIP Thanks to Evergreen’s surgical and Andy Dujenski, DPT and rehabilitation expertise, and Sophie’s Pierce Scranton, MD hard work, she was back on the soccer field just seven months after her injury. “I’m back playing soccer just like before – no restrictions, no hindrances,” she says, smiling. “This injury could really have put an end to my dream if I hadn’t found such great folks to take care of me.” For more information, visit www.evergreenhospital.org/ortho or www.evergreenhospital.org/rehab, or call the Evergreen Healthline at 425.899.3000.

Record-Setting Gala Kicks Off Cancer Center Campaign

The Elling & Barbara Halvorson Cancer Center

Our 10th annual Evergreen Gala set a fundraising record – $1.16 million was raised to support the creation of the Elling & Barbara Halvorson Cancer Center at Evergreen. This new cancer center will both expand and consolidate Evergreen Hospital Medical Center’s well-regarded cancer services, allowing Evergreen to acquire the best equipment, expand access, and bring all facets of a patient’s cancer treatment together in one patient-centered location. During the Fund-a-Need portion of the event, $411,000 was raised to purchase tomosynthesis – the breakthrough 3-dimensional breast cancer detection technology. (See page 4 for more on tomosynthesis.) More than 650 business and community leaders, physicians and patrons of Evergreen Healthcare came together on April 30 for an incredible “Evening in Paris” under the stars at Marymoor Park in an impressive 35,000-square-foot freestanding tent, complete with the Eiffel Tower and a Parisian café setting.

The Gene & Irene Wockner Hospice Center: 20 Years of Caring “I cannot imagine how any family could manage without the caring and professional help given by hospice. Thank you, and God bless you all.”

The Evergreen community thanks Elling and Barbara Halvorson, seen here with Evergreen CEO Bob Malte, for their generous leadership gift toward the cancer center that will bear their name. Watch future issues of Evergreen Monitor for information about the cancer center.

$100,000 Grant to Increase Access to Evergreen’s Palliative Care Program More people in our communities will have access to Evergreen’s unique Palliative Care program, thanks to a $100,000 grant from The Regence Foundation, the corporate foundation of Regence BlueShield. Palliative care focuses on improving the quality of life for patients facing a chronic or life-threatening illness by aggressively managing symptoms, setting treatment goals, providing support to patients and families, and planning for end-of-life care. Unlike hospice care, palliative care can be provided at any time during a person’s illness. While some healthcare organizations deliver palliative care in a hospital setting, Evergreen’s unique focus provides consultation and counseling services in the patient’s home, including skilled-nursing facilities. Currently, Evergreen’s program has a partnership with

Life Care Center of Kirkland. The Regence Foundation grant will enable the additional staffing needed to broaden the relationship with Life Care Center and develop relationships with other skilled nursing facilities in the communities that Evergreen serves. The grant is part of The Regence Foundation’s Sojourns grantmaking program to promote hospital and community-based palliative care services. updates from evergreen hospital

Keeping You Safer in the Hospital Nothing matters more to us than your care, comfort and well-being. That’s why Evergreen now uses CPOE to ensure your hospital stay is even safer.

• Bedside medication barcoding is a final check that matches the patient’s barcode and electronic medical record with the medication’s barcode.

CPOE stands for Computerized Physician Order Entry. That means instead of handwriting patient care orders on paper forms, Evergreen physicians and nurses now enter orders directly into your computerized medical record. This provides numerous safeguards, as well as many improvements in overall efficiencies, such as:

• The “Time Out” program is a final check prior to each surgery to ensure the right patient is getting the right surgery on the right part of the body.

• Entering orders electronically is intended to ensure that patients get exactly what the doctor orders, every time. • Because electronic orders are filed instantly, tests will take place quicker and medications will be delivered faster. • Physicians and nurses will be able to check patient orders and patient medication history at any time, from any computer. In addition to CPOE, these other innovations are helping us prevent errors and keep you safe: • Our robotic pharmacy uses barcode technology to dispense the correct medication to the correct patient.

• Our HemoSafe blood storage refrigerator uses patient barcoding to limit access to only the correct blood match.

You can help us protect your health by: • Knowing your medications, and making sure those are entered into your patient record. • Asking your physician or nurse what medication you are receiving. • Making sure the physician or nurse scans your wrist¬band and asks your name before giving you medicine. • Speaking up if you think you are about to get the wrong medicine. • Asking for help immediately if you don’t feel well, or think you might be having a reaction, after receiving a medicine. • Washing your hands. Hand hygiene is key to good health. If you’ll remind us when we forget to wash, we’ll remind you!

At the center of this initiative is the HemoSafe blood storage refrigerator, which is stocked with 150 available units of blood on-site at Evergreen.

When blood is needed, the patient’s information is input using barcode technology, and the automated technology dispenses the correct component.

People needing lab work can now have it done in a spacious new center at Evergreen Hospital. PACLAB has consolidated its two smaller Patient Service Centers on the Evergreen campus into an expanded facility located in Coral suite 520. The larger, more comfortable waiting room includes a children’s play area, Wi-Fi access and a big screen TV. The six private blood-draw rooms mean faster service, and the new design also provides a relaxing environment for

obstetric patients who need extended glucose tolerance testing. The new PACLAB Patient Service Center is open Monday through Friday, 7 a.m. to 6:30 p.m., and Saturday 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., and can be reached at 425.899.2736. Other Patient Services Centers are located in Canyon Park, Redmond and Woodinville. Visit www.evergreenhospital.org/lab for hours and directions.

updates from evergreen hospital

For your convenience, you may register and pay for classes 24/7 online at www.evergreenhospital.org/classes. You may also call the Evergreen Healthline at 425.899.3000, Mon.-Fri., 7 a.m.-7 p.m.

Extended Hours to Serve You

Evergreen Hospital Board of Commissioners Al DeYoung, Bothell /Duvall /Woodinville Jeanette Greenfield, At Large

Life is hectic – even on a good day. That’s why Evergreen’s primary care and urgent care centers provide extended hours during the week and on the weekend to meet your family’s needs. Our Evergreen primary care centers all have Saturday hours, and most offer longer hours during the week. Our Canyon Park location is open Sundays for walk-ins. Our Evergreen urgent care centers in Redmond and Woodinville are open seven days a week to take care of illnesses and injuries that don’t require a trip to the Emergency Department, such as: • bladder infections • coughs, colds, sinus infections • earaches, fever, sore throats

• minor injuries • rashes, skin infections

When emergency care is needed, our emergency departments in Kirkland and Redmond are ready to help 24/7.
