exceptional outcomes through innovative techniques. Jeffrey Roh, MD, is a practitioner of this breakthrough care, and he is one of the reasons Evergreen enjoys the distinction of excellence. The Evergreen Spine Institute provides care pathways that are personalized for each patient, and that process begins with diagnosis: “If you have back or neck pain that is associated with leg or arm pain, you should seek help,” said Dr. Roh. “The first thing to do is see your primary care physician (PCP) for an initial assessment.” Your PCP may send you to a physiatrist – a specialist in spine and sports medicine who focuses on nonsurgical treatments. These treatments are successful for many people, however: “If medications, physical therapy and injections are ineffective,” said Dr. Roh, “then it’s good to be evaluated by a surgeon.” Dr. Roh performs all of his inpatient surgeries at Evergreen. “Evergreen’s stated purpose is to enrich the health and well-being of every life we touch,” said Dr. Roh. “The people at Evergreen truly believe that excellent patient care is their top priority. And even as we’ve become a regional center of excellence for spine care we’ve kept the heart of this philosophy.”

And Evergreen has become a center of excellence: “We perform more minimally invasive spine surgery than any other hospital in the state,” said Dr. Roh. Many of Evergreen’s surgeons are leaders in this field: Two of our surgeons (Dr. Roh is one of them) are among the handful of Washington state surgeons who are members of the Society for Minimally Invasive Spine Surgery. “Our surgeons not only have committed to learning and refining these techniques,” said Dr. Roh, “but we’ve become leaders. Surgeons come from all over the world to learn from us how to do these procedures. Continued on back page
