SPRING 2013

Aging Invites Active Management – at Any Time

If you’re like many people, you didn’t think you were growing older until your body brought it to your attention. Maybe your joints began to ache, your blood pressure was elevated, or you could no longer read the fine print on food labels. Actually, the human body goes through one continuous process of change, from the moment of conception through old age. So in reality, we spend our whole lives … aging!

Horizons promotes a healthy outlook beyond age 55. EvergreenHealth Horizons is a service of EvergreenHealth Senior Care. EDITOR: Rosemary Langford To receive this free, quarterly Horizons publication, leave a message at 425.899.1858 or email us at horizons@ evergreenhealth.com.

The good news is that it’s never too late, or too early, to take steps to prevent injury, illness or loss of function and to remain healthy. Your experience of aging will improve with these simple steps:

Develop a good relationship with your doctor. If you’d like a referral to one of EvergreenHealth’s excellent primary care physicians, please call our Healthline at 425.899.3000.

Include physical activity in your daily routine. Regular, moderate physical activity can help you maintain a healthy weight, lower blood pressure, prevent constipation, help build strong bones, slow bone loss, and increase blood flow to your whole body and brain.

Stay mentally active and social. Do crossword puzzles; take alternate routes when driving; learn to play a musical instrument; get together with family and friends.

Eat a healthy diet. Choose vegetables, fruits, whole grains, high-fiber foods and lean sources of protein, such as fish. Limit meats that are high in fat, and dairy products and sweets, which might cause constipation. Drink plenty of water and other fluids.

Aging is a natural, lifelong process over which we have some influence. And despite the limitations of old age, evidence suggests that the old are more content with life, less depressed and less fearful of death than the young. That may be an overall benefit worth waiting for. www.evergreenhealth.com
