Taiwan has a number of extraordinary species, magnificent landscapes, historic landmarks and architecture, diverse arts, aboriginal cultures, enduring history, customs and culture, and is very compelling in all regards. Ever Rich Jewelry hopes to combine this compelling impact and creativity by hosting the “Ever Rich Jewelry Design Award” to stimulate the creativity of the next generation and hopes to present the beauty of Taiwan in all its tremendous splendor via jewelry design. This exhibition consists of two sections: “Next-Generation Beauty of Taiwan” and “Classic Beauty of Taiwan”. Dialogues between these works bring about the diverse landscapes of Taiwan.

The Mazu Watercolor Painting Contest is part of a series of events in conjunction with the Taichung Mazu International Festival. The contest has been held annually since 2013, and soon will celebrate its sixth year. This contest attracts the best art talents throughout Taiwan to join the competition. All of their works are high quality. Since 2014, the Cultural Affairs Bureau of the Taichung City Government has started to collect the Top 3 works from the college & adult group. This exhibition includes all 12 award winners from 2014 to 2017. It is the first time to exhibit in the Taichung International Airport. Through these outstanding artworks, the Bureau hopes to share with travelers the beauty of Mazu culture.

泰德現代美術館即將推出畢卡索在館內的首次個展,將有一系列他在 1932 年創

作超過 100 件大量繪畫、雕塑等,預期將成為美術館歷史上最深刻的展覽。在展 覽中,觀眾能用月份探索時年 50 歲的他,是如何多產多情,達到事業最高峰。 當年在巴黎的首展,讓他成為 20 世紀最有影響力的藝術家,可從作品裡可以感 受他在生活和創作的矛盾和掙扎,一窺這他充滿爭議卻藝術能量最高的時代。

Tate Modern stages its first ever solo exhibition of Pablo Picasso’s work, one of the most ambitious shows in the museum’s history. Picasso 1932 – Love, Fame, Tragedy takes visitors on a month-by-month journey through 1932, a time so pivotal in Picasso’s life and work that it has been called his ‘year of wonders’. More than 100 outstanding paintings, sculptures and works on paper demonstrate his prolific and restlessly inventive character, stripping away common myths to reveal the man and the artist in his full complexity and richness. His paintings reached a new level of sensuality and he cemented his celebrity status as one of the most influential artists of the 20th century.

Musée Yves Saint Laurent Paris Inaugural Display 巴黎瑪索大街 5 號,曾是一家酒店,但從 1974 年開始,成為了聖羅蘭服裝公司 所在。在博物館裡,能了解他是如何建立起時尚帝國,因為對他來說,每件衣服

背後都有一些故事,有時是對於女性的觀念、關於藝術的歷史。不過在這裡,並

不只有聖羅蘭的作品,而是讓大家了解高級訂製服的創造過程。所以這裡不僅是 一個時裝博物館,更是藝術家的私人空間,窺探百分百的聖羅蘭風格。

In 1974, the Yves Saint Laurent haute couture house, which had been located at 30 bis rue Spontini since it was established in 1961, moved to a hôtel particulier at 5 avenue. Yves Saint Laurent would go on to spend nearly thirty years there pursuing his career as a couturier. After his death, the Musée Yves Saint Laurent Paris opened its doors with a unique retrospective display of his work. Presented on the legendary premises of the former haute couture house, the retrospective will be exhibited throughout the museum’s entire exhibition space and visitors will be able to view examples of Yves Saint Laurent’s signature designs and his lifestyle.

The Rockbund Art Museum Shanghai, China

In collaboration with Fondazione Sandretto Re Rebaudengo, one of the most renowned contemporary art institutions in Italy, the Rockbund Art Museum in Shanghai is proud to present the latest exhibition “Walking On The Fade Out Lines.” With 29 works from over 23 artists from all continents, spanning such various forms as paintings, interactive installations, photography, and video. Viewers can scrutinize how artists offer up dilemmas through creative questioning, examination, and analyses from the end of the 20th century to the present. Through a poetic elaboration, the exhibition attempts to transform the intrinsic understanding of cognitive structures that had gone along set paths, thereby offering up more open and plural interpretative perspectives.

也許你還不認識她,但一定看過她的作品,她是許多生活品 牌喜愛的插畫家,因為她擅長描繪人與人之間的故事,這一 次《VOYAGER》以「我們一起努力」為主題,邀請她來繪製 封面,就讓我們一起來看看,創作背後的二三事。

You might not know her, but you’ve probably seen her work. A skilled illustrator who excels at telling stories about people, she has worked with several big-name lifestyle brands. In VOYAGER’s latest cover commission, she tells us one such story – her own.

“I enjoy playing all kinds of media, hand drawing, collage, sewing, printing, taking photos ... all sorts of things that we can make use of our bare hands.” This is how Chu-Li Chen introduces herself on her blog.”

和大多數插畫家不同,對她來說,創作更像是反

卻發現想要唸的是設計;大學則是進了輔仁大學修讀

For Chen, in contrast to most illustrators, creation is an attempt to portray a moment in life and to show how everything in life is connected. During her school years, she tried art, textiles, and graphic design before finally settling on illustration.

她說:「那個時候不知道插畫可以是一個工作。」

“I didn’t think illustration could be a career,” she says.

勇於嘗試 讓創作多元呈現

Experiments with Diverse Materials

仔細觀看她的作品,會發現過往經驗紮實地呈現

織品,意識到雖然喜歡布料和織品藝術,卻不喜歡紡

Many past experiences are observable in her current works. She describes images with lines and shapes, and composes whole pictures according to graphic design concepts. Chen’s textile education also encourages her to mix various materials in her creativity.

即使在有所限制的商業委託案中,她也秉持著求

Chen intentionally represents such changes in an abstract way. While the contributions of such young people may not generate an immediate impact, their motivation and passion grow something richer over time and positively influence local residents.

Even under the limitations of commercial projects, she continues to push boundaries and explore possibilities. “As long as the project is fun, I’m willing to experiment and try something different” in terms of themes and the target audience, Chen says.

While many illustrators deliver their messages strictly through literal visual communication, Chen focuses more on the content and stories told through her visual work. Indeed, a large number of her pieces surround characters. “I enjoy depicting people and their stories,” she confesses. This preference fits well with the current issue of VOYAGER, which examines how the younger generation is returning to, enriching, and reviving their hometowns with knowledge and enthusiasm.

6 年完成一本書

One Book in Six Years

姝里十多年的創作經驗裡,印象最深刻的莫過於

《一本關於別人缺點的書(Libro de los defectos de

los demás)》, 是 2016 年 於 西 班 牙 出 版。 從 2010 年開始討論、編輯、印刷,分隔兩地的來回,總共花 了 6 年的時間才完成,中間還歷經金融風暴,讓姝里 心想,是否真的有出版的那一天。

Her book, Libro de los defectos de los demás, was published in Spain in 2016 after six years in production. During the European financial crisis, she wondered whether it would ever be completed.

She created the book while studying in Britain, where it was chosen for a V&A Student Illustration Award. Each character in the book represents a flaw in human nature. Having lived in Spain for only a year, Chen didn’t have a good enough command of Spanish to pen the book herself, so editors helped write the text based on Chen’s ideas.

Chen’s works integrate various materials and formats. She prefers books as a medium as they enable her to tell the full story, though she also sees the value in individual illustrations to go beyond reality. As long as there are human stories to be told, she will be recording them.

Indeed, regardless of the economic situation, one genre of book always has good sales figures: self-help guides. This is because people in modern society are too busy and unimaginative; we’re all eager to head to the same destination without enjoying or exploring the process. We read in order to learn how to quickly get to the destination instead for the joy of reading. We are in a goal-oriented society that evaluates everything based on utility and efficiency.

然而這世上大多數美好的體驗及「成功」,都不

However, the truth is that there is rarely a shortcut to success. If the advice of get-rich-quick self-help books really worked, everyone would be a millionaire. I think there are two points worth sharing. First, utility cannot be widely examined in an objective manner. We all define the concept differently according to our own. How to define useful? What might be the impact when you read a book when you were young?

Second, let’s talk about the reading list. Do you rely on recommendations or bestsellers? It’s true that people’s recommendations might provide you some useful ideas, but if you depend on that completely, you would miss something. Cultural critic Wei-hsiung Zhan once said, “When you’re reading a book, the point is not the book but the process of reading.” You just need to read a book. Other's reflection is someone else, not yours. The answer appears when you read.

所謂好書,無標準答案。讀了受用,就是好書。

In this issue of VOYAGER, we explore some of their stories in depth. Master chocolatier Yu-hsuan Cheng and Chefs Tsun-yuan Hsiao and Kai-wei Lin demonstrate how culture is shaping Taiwanese cuisine. Chi-wei Lin studied electronic engineering at UCLA but rather than taking a position at a global corporation, he founded a company that promotes the cultures and stories of Taiwan through fun tabletop games.

昔日的大學同學,畢業後各自在不同的領域努力著。蕭淳 元先後服務於日本新宿小笠原、銀座寶格麗餐廳、台北侯

布雄餐廳;林凱維則在法國米其林 Auberge la Fenière、普 羅旺斯 Le Jardin Mazarin 歷練過。過了幾年兩個人又再度 在故鄉台中相遇,以雙主廚的形式,將國外學成的廚藝,

與故鄉的土地連接,他們的「Hero Restaurant 英雄餐廳」, 雖然才成立 1 年多,已是中部小有名氣、外國觀光客慕名

而來的餐廳。去年 12 月更在南投酒廠酒窖舉辦「野臺繫」, 號召職人和廚師,用在地的風土和文化,交流美味的饗宴, 串連起在這片土地上生活的每一個人。

Tsun-yuan Hsiao and Kai-wei Lin, the two chefs at Hero Restaurant in the central Taiwan city of Taichung, were classmates at university. After graduation, Hsiao worked in Japan at the OgasawaraHakushaku-Tei and the Bulgari Tokyo Restaurant as well as in Taipei at L’Atelier de Joël Robuchon. Meanwhile, Lin went to France, where he worked in Michelin-star restaurant Auberge la Fenière and at Jardin Mazarin. After few years they met again and decided to open a restaurant to showcase the flavours, techniques, and skills they had acquired abroad. Now, having been opened for only a little more than a year, Hero Restaurant is garnering fame among foreign gourmands. Last December, the restaurant held“Gastronomie en scène”events in Nantou Winery, inviting chefs and craftsmen to join and present good food cultivated by the local terroir and culture.

On the second floor, some karasumi is laid out to dry in the sun. “We prefer to dry it by ourselves as what you can buy at the market is always too dry – not soft and tender,” Hsiao said. “It’s a sort of Japanese style,” he added. Karasumi is best enjoyed in autumn, which is when we visited Hero. The restaurant prepares its dishes according to the season.“You can observe a clearer seasonality in the local markets here, unlike in Taipei, where they sell everything throughout every season,” the chef explained. What’s on the menu in Hero always depends simply on what’s available in the market; other autumn favourites include mushrooms, root vegetables, and beans.

Situated along Taichung’s Art Museum Parkway, Hero Restaurant is hidden in a discreet two-storey Japanese house. However, the two characters embroidered on the curtain –“英雄 ”, meaning“hero”in Chinese – are certainly noticeable. Those who are interested would find behind the curtain a Japanese rock garden that hints at the location’s past as a Japanese restaurant. A brightly smiling Tsunyuan Hsiao told us that he and Lin were thrilled with the atmosphere imparted by the old house, which is exactly what they had initially wanted. Moreover, there was a bar countertop in it already, which was perfect for a restaurant. It was Lin Kai-wei who found the location, which required only slight renovations to make it the Hero we see today.

Originally established in Nantou County and run by Hsiao and his family, Hero was moved to its current location just over a year ago. Graduates from the Department of Chinese Culinary Arts at National Kaohsiung University of Hospitality and Tourism, Hsiao and Lin are both in their early 30s. After mastering Chinese cuisine at the school, one went to Japan after graduation and the other to France. Interestingly, both worked for restaurants serving Italian and French cuisine – and they also both came back to Taiwan around the same time. They met once again as their hometowns, Nantou and Taichung’s Qingshui, are not far from each other, one in the mountains and the other by sea, and each seems to compliment the other perfectly. Their past experiences got rekindled in their cuisine. “The flavours of our cooking can be traced to what we’re familiar with,” Lin said. “They come from what we have learned. It’s not because Taiwan or local flavours are‘à la mode’ now,” he added. Cooking Italian and French cuisine with quality local produce, their cooking style might be hard to classify, but that also means it’s distinctive.

乍看僅是把生菜和食用花草推疊起來,看似簡

單。不過,可是一道需要花費許多時間才能完成,尤 其準備近 30 種各式各樣的花草,並不簡單的,能盡量 使用自己在南投栽種的植物是他們秉持的原則。

Recipe: Hero Salad This seemingly simple salad of leaves and flowers actually takes quite some time to prepare. And it isn’t easy to collect 30 different herbs and flowers either. In Hero Restaurant, the ingredients are mostly from the garden of one of the chefs in neighbouring Nantou County. Watching Hsiao prepare this salad is like observing a pleasurable ritual – one of sensual awakening. The kitchen fills with fragrant aromas as the flowers and herbs are rubbed together and torn, releasing their natural scents and flavours. The salad is then built by layering up all the ingredients on a wood-slice serving board. The floral notes, the chewy potatoes, and the nutty aroma from the Agaricus mushrooms are an adventure for the palate. The chef advises that seasonal herbs and flowers be substituted if necessary when preparing the dish at home.

When Cheng first tasted a chocolate from France’s renowned La Maison du Chocolat, he was stunned by its rich flavour. He also realized something else at that moment: if he wanted to become a true professional in the chocolate-making craft, he would have to travel to Paris. Five years later, after already teaching himself the basics, Cheng set off for France, where chocolate craftsmanship originated. During his yearlong stay, he gained a deep understanding of not only chocolate but French pastries as a whole. Indeed, he immersed himself in French culture, experiencing first-hand the country’s terroir and style of living. He interned at Pavillon Ledoyen, a legendary threeMichelin-star restaurant, and at Jacques Genin, a leading Parisian chocolate shop, as part of a school program. The

The logic of chocolate-making is completely different from that of pastry-making. While French pastries exhibit a harmony of multiple elements, a chocolate brings out just one or two specific flavours and magnifies them in a simple composition. It is therefore critical for a chocolatier to master flavours.“As a flavour creator, I try to learn more about local flavours and present them in a natural yet accurate way,”Cheng said.“In my own style, of course.”

Soy Sauce: This is an unusual yet fascinating combination of black bean soy sauce and dark chocolate. The exceptional artisanal soy sauce comes from a historic brewery in Tainan. Time and traditional craftsmanship grant the sauce its exquisite fragrance and colour throughout the natural brewing process, during which no artificial sweeteners are added. The rich flavour is enhanced by the smoky notes of dark chocolate from Papua New Guinea and Africa.

The brand won one silver medal and one bronze in the International Chocolate Awards in 2016 – the first year it had entered. The following year, Yu took home a haul of four silvers and one bronze. In addition, when Louis Vuitton published its travel guide to Taipei, Yu Chocolatier was the sole chocolate shop listed.

I never imagined that it would come so soon,”Cheng said, recalling the day he left France. Last October, Yu Chocolatier was invited to join the 2017 edition of the Salon du Chocolat, the world’s largest event dedicated to chocolate. Stepping up onto the world stage, this young man presented chocolates nourished by his homeland – and received a glowing welcome from chocolate lovers from all over the world. “People were impressed,”he said.“Those who didn’t know about Taiwan were surprised and then curious about the origin of those chocolates. Those who did know were surprised, too, since they didn’t realize that a Taiwanese chocolatier could produce such a high-quality product.” Some attendees were so taken by Cheng’s chocolates that they bought another ticket to come back and try more the following day, and then sent their friends to visit the next day.

craftsmanship, Cheng’s chocolates tell fascinating stories of Taiwan in an international language. The highly positive response received during his five days at Salon du Chocolat strengthened Cheng’s determination to bring his brand to Paris. He plans to set up a pop-up store there by the end of the year in order to get more familiar with the French market and business operations, and a permanent store in the City of Light is foreseen in the near future.“Chocolate-making is easy to learn but difficult to master,”Cheng said. “One always has to think and experiment over and over before getting something perfect.”And, as a perfectionist, he never ceases to push himself further. His dreams might be coming true, but the road to this position has been paved with constant toil. Exhibiting his perpetual quest for excellence, Yu’s chocolates seem a fitting result of his decades of hard work.

打造台灣原創玩具 聰明「玩」勝世界 Made in Taiwan: True Adventure Games for Kids

和累積的經驗不夠多。過往的學習經歷告訴他,玩樂 頂著美國 UCLA 電機碩士的光環,林啟維沒有按照一般 人的想像,成為科技新貴,反而在回台後,創辦自己的

玩具品牌「綿羊犬」,開發各種益智型桌遊。從研發、 設計到製造,通通 100% 原創,自 2013 年創立至今,推

出 10 多款桌遊玩具,已有近 10 萬名小孩玩過。主題包 羅萬象,包括令不少孩子頭疼的「數學」,聽了就大打 呵欠的「歷史古文明」,以及與都市生活無緣的「自然 生態」;林啟維希望經由這些玩具,孩子們可以動手玩 出樂趣,動腦學到知識!

While studying in the U.S., Lin noticed that children there articulated their preferences well, while those in Taiwan seldom knew what they liked or why. He came to believes that fun is a critical ingredient in effective learning and that textbooks are merely one of many educational options.

After earning an electrical engineering degree from UCLA, Chi-wei Lin went in a somewhat different direction, founding his own toy brand, Shepherd Kit, and developing tabletop games aimed at children. Since 2013, he has released over a dozen games on topics from maths to ecosystems to ancient civilisations. His hope is that every child has the chance to learn through fun – and he’s off to a strong start, with his games already played by more than 100,000 children.

Lin initially organized children programs, with activities that grew from simple stories to handicrafts, theatrical performances, and short film productions. While inspiring, these activities were not easy to replicate. It was this challenge that spurred Lin to design tabletop games that could allow children to both learn and have fun anytime, anywhere.

Lin said. Others agree; two of his company’s products – Oriental Culture Discovery and Railway Kingdom – received Recommended Badges in the 2014 Parents’ Choice Awards. The games lead players to learn about things like ancient bronze wares by making murals and even building their own railways and trains, providing a means of education that is creative, hands-on, and satisfying.

走入汪俐伶位於迪化街巷弄內的「曖設計工作

室」,展示間內掛滿整排黑色系樣衣,伴隨散發著七

彩金屬光澤的布料,還有許多剪裁大膽的訂製禮服和 秀服隨著上頭的珠繡在眼前發光,貼近一看,在低調

的色彩下各個都是工藝高超、細節令人眼花撩亂的出 色傑作。

Walking into Darklightdesign Studio on Taipei’s rustic Dihua Street, you find rows of dark clothes adorned with metallic fabrics, boldly cut evening gowns, and showpieces with luminous embroidery. It’s not until you get a little closer that you realise just how delicate and carefully crafted these pieces are.

今年春夏的《玩霧 / 玩物》系列,她一直不斷試著在 材質中同時展現 “Visible & Invisible”(虛與實)的 雙重概念。

Wang picks up a black evening gown and turns on the flash on her phone’s camera and takes a photo of the glowing patterns hidden in the piece’s fabric. She has been exploring the concept of “visible and invisible” in clothing ever since producing A Conversation with the Wind, which she showcased in St. Martin five years ago. Her subsequent shows – The Depiction Lighting in 2014, The Gesture of Water at New York Fashion Week in 2016, and Tantalizing Haze from AW 2017 to SS 2018 – were all based on the same concept.

My Luggage Story This experience differed somewhat from her initial plan.“If a brand is named after a designer, it becomes a thing when the designer gets popular,”she says.“That’s too much effort for me. I want to use this name – Darklightdesign – to keep a lower profile and let my works speak for me.”

從第一個案子以來,便馬不停蹄,加上 1 年 2 回

的品牌發表會,最近一次不為工作而飛已是 4 年前。 奇的「原本是要去紐約看秀,直到登機前 8 小時突然 通知我去辦秀,品牌名都沒時間想,主辦方官網竟然 直接掛上英文全名了」她笑著說。

3 years ago, Wang ended her studies prematurely due to a health issue in order to return to Taiwan. During her break, she worked as a freelance designer before establishing her own brand. Everything seemed to be cosmically arranged in her favour. Wang received her first case within a week when she rented her friend's spare space. The costumes she designed for a popular haircare brand earned her the attention of a representative from a Chinese mall, who invited her to set up shop there. And, topping even that, eight hours before catching a flight to attend New York Fashion Week as an observer, she was invited to put her own pieces on display during the event. Everything moved so fast that Wang didn’t even have enough time to name her brand, so the hosts used her full name as the title on their official website.

The hetic schedule of fashion show meant the last trip she went on for pleasure was already 4 years ago. The most impressive trips she has been was a spring holiday to Venice when she was a postgraduate student and a journey to Paris with a previous employer. On both trips, Wang says, she was lucky to have been shown around

She hunts for goodies at local markets in each city she visits, keeping a keen eye out for antique jewellery. Wang brought back all the accessories on the table from her trips to Paris, London, Venice, New York, and Osaka, among others. The old sewing machine was shipped to Taiwan from a London antique shop.

What to carry as a fashion designer during Fashion Week 在歐洲廉航行李限重的磨練下,汪俐伶學會簡約打包,即使參加時裝 週時,行李箱裡只有半箱是自己的東西,另一半則全塞滿服裝作品或 裁縫包等工具。

Wang developed her minimalist packing approach thanks to the restrictive weight policies imposed by low-cost carriers in Europe. Even during Fashion Week trips, only half of her luggage is with personal items, the rest of the space is taken up by her work pieces and tailoring kits.

An Arabian royal service staffer led their trip in Paris, while in Venice she met a film director in an encounter like something out of a movie.“Destiny even arranges my trips for me,”Wang says with a laugh.“When I look back at my life and work experiences, I find that opportunities come to me by themselves. All I have to do is seize them.”

Travelling is for relax and open for adventure, says Wang, who is anti-souvenirs but enjoys roaming local antique markets when she travels.“I don't like squeezing local food or souvenirs into my luggage, but I am always hunting for little accessories or stuff I can’t design by myself at local markets to highlight my all-black outfit.”

Life might be simple, but not on her design. In her latest show, she created up to 83 pieces including 13 pieces of children’s clothing for the very first time. She also insisted on including one showpiece to represent her brand at both the beginning and end of the show.“Nowadays, there are few Taiwanese designers working on showpieces which represent the artistry of a brand, but that is essential for me.”Expecting to maintain an experimental but practical design style while being increasingly creative in her use of materials and colours will be her future direction.

Penghu is an archipelago of sun and ocean where travellers visit in waves. Casting a new spotlight on the island is Discovery Hotel. Senior jewellery expert. Huang worked as a jewellery journalist for Min-Sheng Daily for more than two decades and as a columnist for over 10 years. She is also the owner of the website Beyond the Jewelry and sat on the judging panel for the 2017 Ever Rich Jewellery Design Award.

What is the beauty of Taiwan? This is the first question tackled by Ever Rich Jewellery Design Award (ERJ Award).

鳥瞰台灣島形、起伏地貌、縱橫阡陌;仰望天燈 冉冉飄升、白鷺鷥畫過天際、群蝶凌空飛舞。遠觀梅 花鹿躍動,近賞原生蕨類茂生。饒富趣味的是,美食 也是風景,珍珠奶茶、蓮霧、小籠包都被點名。

特別邀請龔遵慈、黃尹青和蕭青陽,三位不同專業領域的評審 參與評選,期待得獎作品展現多元的臺灣之美。

Three experts were invited from different disciplines, Tsun-tsi Kong, Yin-ching Huang, and Qing-yang Xiao to serve on the judging panel, anticipating the variety of the awarded works.

金獎得主李相誼以「脈」作為主題, 為了讓臺灣山脈表現得更壯闊,設 計中加了臺灣黑熊的元素,使臺灣

意象更強烈、畫面更有張力。線條 的粗細依照書法的筆法設計排列, 表現出東方之美。

The first-prize work was Range. Artist Hsiang-yi Li incorporated the Formosan Black Bear into the work to present the grandness of Taiwan's mountain ranges, thereby highlighting a key geographical feature of Taiwan and giving the work an impressive aura. The strokes are placed in accordance with the style of calligraphy art, adding Eastern beauty to the work.

Look down at the topography of Taiwan and you will find complex landscapes dotted with criss-crossing rice paddies; turn your gaze upward and you might see sky lanterns rising to the heavens, little egrets flying overhead, and butterflies dancing around one other. Formosan Sika Deer jump in the distance, framed by native ferns growing vigorously in the foreground. In urban settings, these features are replaced with local drinks and foods like bubble milk tea, wax apples, and soup dumplings.

這些美,如何用珠寶來表達 ? 這是比賽的第二個 叩問。

This leads to the second question posed as part of the ERJ Award: How can this beauty of Taiwan be presented best?

來自台灣、香港、日本、紐西蘭和法國的參賽者, 各顯身手,或生拙、或嫻熟。雖然比評的是紙上創意, 不嚴格要求能落實為珠寶;但是最後勝出的,還是懂

得珠寶本質和型式的作品,畢竟是用珠寶為語彙來說 台灣的美景。

The answer varied for every artist in the running for the award, who hailed from Taiwan, Hong Kong, Japan, New Zealand, and France and who ranged from amateurs to masters. Furthermore, although the competition was theory-based, with competitors required to offer a paper explaining their ideas, the finalists all chose to emphasize the physical nature and characteristics of jewellery in their response to the ERJ Award's call to present Taiwan's beauty through jewellery.

珠寶的基本功能是裝飾身體的美物,它們展現最 美的舞台在人體。參賽作品意欲分享的美景,若能被

The human body is the best stage for jewellery. Hence, the pieces that stood out the most were those that also clearly worked as accessories should: to enhance the appearance of a particular body part, be the ears, neck, chest, fingers, or elsewhere.

寫景之外,能夠抒情寫意,必定更動人。一如「昇 恆昌珠寶」設計師劉心韻所言,有人文的溫度,才能 賦予作品生命力。

Also notable is that the works that proved particularly moving were those that introduced an emotional element rather than simply portraying a scene. As ERJ designer Sylvie Liu once said: "Feelings make designs livelier."

Formosan Black Bear stretching its head out from behind the mountains. This tiny piece distils both scenery and emotion, while its black-and-white composition exhibits both the elegance of traditional Chinese paintings and the simplicity of Western jewellery. Be it used as a brooch or a pendant, this work highlights the wearer's chest with its vivid story and the equally vivid depiction of it.

總體來說,珠寶設計師龔遵慈指出,這次不少作 品 ( 即使沒有入圍的遺珠 ) 有落實成珠寶的可能,有的 僅需修改部分細節,就是好看且有賣點的商品。她建

議主辦單位,與這些參賽者商談將它們鑲製出來的可 能,既可延伸比賽的成果,對參賽者也是一種鼓勵。

According to jewellery designer Tsun-tsi Kong, many candidates valued practical aspects of production this year – even those who didn't make it to the final round. With just a few modifications, she said, these fantastic ideas could have been realised. Kong suggested that, in future events, the organizers help facilitate the production process of outstanding entries. Doing so would not only encourage participants but also maximise the outcomes of the competition, she said.

舉辦這次比賽,昇恆昌的主要目的是建立起一個 交流平台。台灣的珠寶消費力和消費意願國際知名, 但是目前校園內連一個獨立的珠寶專業設計科系都沒

Looking at the Island won the bronze prize for Angchi Hsiao. Looking at Taiwan from the perspective of Portuguese sailors centuries ago, it depicts the scenery of Taiwan's high mountains and forest reflected in the ocean.

The winning works and other featured entries are on show at the Culture Plaza on the fifth floor of the Ever Rich flagship shop in Taipei's Neihu District.

Eve r Rich h os t s t h e c om pe t i t i on w i t h t h e a i m o f developing a platform for jewellery design. It's the kind of effort that is much needed in the field. Taiwanese people are more than willing to purchase and appreciate jewellery, but no colleges in the country offer a degree in jewellery design. In planning the event, coordinators met with numerous stakeholders throughout Taiwan, linking various parties together and inviting them to participate in the competition. "There are 60 education providers and 57 departments or colleges participating in the competition," ERJ manager Chen-bi Chiu said. The hard work paid off, with the 505 entries received far outstripping the organizers' expectations. This positive response has motivated them to keep the platform going and to integrate more resources for young people who are passionate about jewellery design.

這樣的平台歡迎的不只是珠寶專才,還有跨界的

人才。熱愛台灣且擅長從動人的故事中提煉出精采設

計的蕭青陽,賽前就受邀透過影片提供他寶貴的經驗。 他鼓勵有志者到處走走,擴大視野和用心感受,儲存 為自我的能量,待適當機會提用分享。

Indeed, the competition is open not only to jewellery designer but to people talented in design in general. Qing-yang Xiao, a patriotic Taiwanese designer who excels at refining moving stories down to their essence, shared some wisdom in a video prior to the competition. In it, he encouraged participants to travel more as a means to broaden their horizons and experience life. In the future, he said, it's experiences like these that engender inspiration.

他擔任此次比賽評審後,也提出了跨界的建議。

他指出,多年參加馬拉松競賽,獲得各種獎牌或獎章, 形式大同小異。若是有機會讓珠寶專業人才也加入設 計,應該會有不同的激盪,或許會讓競賽得勝者更想 戴著這些獎牌和獎章到處炫,不只是珍藏 ! 這種跨界 合作的想法,更需要一個平台來連結。

After serving on the judging panel, Xiao let us in on other ways he thinks the jewellery design field could be developed. In particular, he said, the medals offered for sporting events such as marathons could pose a good opportunity. By having jewellery designers create the awards for such races, not only would participants have extra motivation to win but the medal themselves would go from being mere collectors' items to being accessories that winners would be proud to showcase on different occasions. However, to realize such an idea, Xiao said, a serious and effective platform was necessary.

的人和熱愛這個島嶼的人的心中。因為還有那麼多的 可能,等著被發掘、等著被實現。

The competition may be over, with the two issues it raised answered as best they can be, but ERJ isn't going away; it has more probing questions in the pipeline, ready to spark the imagination of lovers of both those who love jewellery and those who love this island.

Behind the Pineapple Chaussons ananas-chocolat is Michael Blin, the bakery’s executive chef. Such creation comes easy for Blin, who was born into a baker’s family. The amount of flour and Elle & Vire butter imported from France for use in the new pastry are precisely calculated and measured to within a single gram. After 36 hours of low-temperature fermentation, the house-made almond chocolate and the Taiwanese pineapple fillings are added. The last tasting was of the 2014 Beaulieu Vineyard Georges de Latour Private Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon. Blending two premium wines to yield a rich aroma and a silky tannin flavour, it has been served at the White House since 1940. The classic wine proved a fittingly romantic finish.

The Middle East-style main dish was alluring as well. A cumin chicken roll with ginger-tomato gravy, it was inspired by the dish served at the state dinner hosted by President Bill Clinton and first lady Hillary when they received King Hassan II of Morocco in 1995. The roll paired perfectly with the bold structure of the 2014 BV Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon. Its 15 months of fermentation in oak barrels gives the wine hints of Jamaican pepper, cinnamon, and brown sugar, which layer wonderfully with the spices in the main dish.

As we drove out of town, the stores on both sides of the road were decorated with Christmas lights. Many people

popped in and out of the businesses, looking for the best holidays deals. I noticed some steam rising into the air around the corner. Roberto parked the car, got out, and bought something from the stall that was the source of the steam. It came wrapped in newspaper. He passed it to me and I looked inside. It was roasted chestnuts and sweet potatoes – he wanted me to enjoy food with my hands, like Europeans did.

Whether with cutlery or my hands, my first mission was to prepare and eat tomato bread. I imitated the others, spreading a thin layer of garlic and salt on the toasted bread before adding a layer of tomato and olive oil. I was told it was a common dish in Catalonia.

We ate very well during that dinner, feasting on Iberian pork ham, cheese of various varieties, mussels with tomato sauce, razor shells, and Galician style octopus. But it was the prawns that impressed me the most. I had never been one for the crustacean, but the sophisticated flavour of the prawns that night obsessed me.

It is a lake that used to be a gulf before Arabs arrived with rice and irrigation systems. In addition to these days being a key rice production area, La Albufera is the origin of paella.

After being impressed by these delicious foods, I was driven to the renowned wine town La Rioja to visit two wineries there as well as la Senda de los elefantes – “the path of the elephants”. There are dozens of restaurants and bars in the historic town, serving up their signature dishes at reasonable prices. Crowds packed the area, enjoying the finger foods even if they had to stand in the street.
