As pets are getting more and more intimate with people with a higher tolerance of each other, people call the pets they keep names such as furkid. For those wandering around, they call them stray dogs, wanderers, and more. The development of classes is the result of people’s concern for and definition of them. They become parts of the human history. The diverse species of dogs manifest their success in evolution. The shift in the media for artistic creation and the transition from thinking of painting to the scenes in everyday life originates from the study and curiosity of images of dogs.

2018 台北雙年展

2018 Taipei Biennale 台灣最重要的當代藝術展覽,邁入第 22 年的台北雙年展,這次邀吳瑪悧、范切

斯科.馬納克達作為雙策展人,以「後自然:美術館作為一個生態系統」作為主軸, 試圖運用美術館作為轉化生態議題的場域,透過藝術家的觀點賦予意義並進行檢

視,打造跨領域的對話平臺。因此不再侷限於視覺藝術家,非營利組織、社會運 動人士、影像工作者、建築師都是這次展覽的參與者,希望能打破藝術家和非藝 術家之間的界線。

Mali Wu and Francesco Manacorda will serve as co-curators of the 11th Taipei Biennial in 2018. The Biennial will focus on the interconnectivity of ecosystemic structures formed between humans and nature, and aims to serve as a platform of social experimentation to generate new interdisciplinary possibilities for long-lasting, community-driven, bottomup synergies. It also aim to explores the concept of “ecosystem” in a broader context than merely nature or the biological environment, encompassing cultural, economic and sociological factors as well.

牧羊人說再見 (The Shepherd Said Goodbye)

此系列插畫是為徐珮芬《在黑洞中我看見自己的眼睛》所繪製,利用複合媒材相互交疊碰撞,去揣摩詩句中的情感, 它們各自獨立,卻又相互影響。This series is painted for Pei-Fen Hsu’s I Saw My Own Eyes in Black Hole. For it, Wu mixes and

overlaps various materials to express the rich emotion of Hsu’s poetry. They are individual pieces yet also influence each other.

無論是報章雜紙或專用的美術用紙,任何零碎的各式紙張散

落於桌上,經過剪裁、重組、粘貼都能形成一幅幅充滿新意 的作品,本期封面映入眼簾的便是吳睿哲另類「插畫」技巧 的呈現,也完美演繹了人與土地間最樸實純真的情誼、最原 始的那份感動。

擁抱山林的藝術創作

Into the Woods

「最原始的感動就來自於那些最初的、最簡單

的、最渺小的事,從這個出發點我想到生命的初始與 傳遞。」高中時期曾參與生物研究社,熱愛自然的吳

睿哲,曾能細數野外碰見的花草樹木的名字,來自於 大地之母的呢喃與溫暖一直長存心中,時常能在他的 作品看見。

“The most touching moments of life result from the earliest, simplest, and smallest things, and this reminds me of the beginning and reproduction of life,” Wu said. When Wu was in high school, he participated in science club. With a passion for nature, he could name a wide variety of plants when spotting them in the wild. The land’s murmurs and warmth have remained in his mind – and his works – ever since.

「土地是任何事情的初始,也是傳遞的媒介,所

以整體的概念就從這裡開始。」封面以遠山、蝴蝶翅

膀與魚鱗等圖騰作為主軸,三者透過河流相連合成, 象徵著不同形式的生命更迭傳遞的概念。善於巧妙運

用拼貼、繪畫、轉印等手法,吳睿哲這次選用單刷版

reproducing, advancing, and relating. Taiwan’s mountains and flowing water resonate with the idea of raw beauty in Wu’s mind, making them the perfect means to depict aforementioned “touching moments at the very beginning” and the richness this motherland gives us.

創意素材的排列組合

Creative Combinations

與許多藝術創作者背景不同,吳睿哲自小並未受

過專業的繪畫訓練,他謙虛地表示這也是專攻拼貼的

主要原因。但這樣的選擇絕非投機,而是懂得自己的

特長,輔以其他藝術手法。目前就讀倫敦皇家藝術學 院(Royal College of Arts,簡稱 RCA)的他,雖在

插畫組,卻仍以拼貼創作為主要方法,「RCA 很自由, 對老師來說插畫不是我們想像中的插畫,是想要拓展

那個可能性,挑戰商業氣息,更在乎的是怎麽去呈現 一個故事或主題,不會要你直接畫出來。」

Wu’s background differs from other artists, with no formal training or education in painting. According to his humble explanation, this is why he specialises in collage art; however, this choice seems less based on petty shrewdness than being a strategic alternative to leverage

“The land is the beginning of things, and it is also the medium. This is where the project begins,” he said. The VOYAGER cover features a mountain motif along with the wings of butterflies and scales of fish. These three patterns are connected by the river, which symbolises evolution. Wu is skilled at collage, painting, and printmaking, and he uses monochrome prints in the current issue to express himself articulately.

his strengths. Indeed, though Wu is now a student at the Royal College of Arts (RCA) in London majoring in illustration, he’s focusing on collage as his main technique. “We have so much freedom at RCA. For our instructor, illustrations aren’t simply images that we conjure up in our heads. Instead, illustration should be about expanding possibilities and challenging commercial practices. It is about how you present a story or a topic, rather than merely painting it.”

Examining the roots of Wu’s art, it is his background knowledge of literature and graphic design that are perhaps the strongest influences. “How do you read a poem? You pull together different imagery; poetry is a form of collage art, too.” Similarly, a mix of imagery is found in his works, giving them an abstractness and leaving space and questions for the viewer to ponder.

集設計、插畫、文字、攝影於一身的創作才子

A Multifaceted Talent

攤開吳睿哲的「履歷」,會驚喜地發現他的多重

身份:文學獎、攝影展、平面設計,以及插畫。看似不 同風貌的階段,其實都隱隱地相互影響,激盪出溫潤不

烈的火花。法國大哲學家沙特曾將「詩」歸納於與繪 畫、雕刻和音樂等同類的藝術,與散文劃清界線,這樣 的論述套用在吳睿哲身上便可見清晰樣貌。詩人透過文 點名時刻(Roll Calling Time)

些深刻的、難受的、歡快的生命經驗仔細剖析,挖空 自己,最後成就一幅幅有故事的作品。

Wu was initially confused about the unfixed nature of illustration; however, after a year or so of study, it began to make sense for him, as did the British approach to education, which differs from that of Taiwan. As he moves forward with collage art, he carefully analyses his past life

字呈現感受,但詩詞中的文字又不僅僅只是指出某個明 確的意象,而是承載許多模糊的符號,來勾勒出作家所 構築的世界。喜好把各種媒材擺放在一起、玩弄圖層的 排列,作詩與作畫兩者的相似性便逐漸重疊。

A look at Wu’s resume reveals his multiple identities as a winner of a literature competition, a photographer, a graphic designer, and an illustrator; his achievements in such diverse fields influence one another. The great French philosopher Sartre categorised poetry not as a form of prose but a form of art, alongside paintings, carvings, and music. Wu is a living example supporting this view. Poets express themselves through words, but rather than referring to specific imagery, their words are ambiguous symbols reflecting their own world. By combining diverse mediums and layering them upon one another, poetry and art overlap and become one.

Jealous Eye, Loose Tongue

Church Street Tales 是和社區合作

的計畫。透過一篇居住或工作於倫 敦 Church Street 的 人 們 所 寫 的 故 事(真實的或虛構的),再進行發 想 與 繪 製, 像 他 收 到 的 是 關 於 嫉 妒、閒言閒語、與夫妻間的信任。

Church Street Tales is a collaboration with a local community. It’s based on the stories, real and fictional, written by people residing or working on Church Street in London, with topics including jealousy, gossip, and spousal trust.

受到注目,「當時我的心情其實很複雜,我覺得我還 沒準備好,即使很開心達到自己的目標了,但會開始

擔心現在的作品會不會比之前的不好」,陷入了百感 交集的心態,不過在業主充分授權自由創作的支持,

他重新詮釋了詩人的文字,讓不同的圖層與材質相互 碰撞、安靜地對話,交疊出別具意義的新語法,成為 他目前最重要的作品。

There is one more year to go for Wu’s educational journey in London. Asked what illustration is, Wu replied: “Illustration is a way to talk and communicate; it’s a medium between speakers and listeners.” It’s like cutting and pasting pieces of lives together and using this to create and deliver an important message. It’s listening and responding to your inner self and realising your naked and authentic thoughts.

Wu’s illustrations for Pei-Fen Hsu’s poetry collection, I Saw My Own Eyes in Black Hole, won him a place at the Bologna Children’s Book Fair and much attention. “I had complicated feelings about that,” Wu recalled. “I didn’t think I was well prepared at that time. I was glad that I made achievements, but I was starting to worry that my earlier works might have been better than my recent ones.” He re-interpreted Hsu’s poems by mixing different materials and adding layers to the work, creating dialogues between them. A new visual language was thus created through that series of illustrations, which proved to be the most important of his career.

Leisure does not involve intervention but adopts a state of openness; rather than obtaining, leisure releases, freeing and forgetting the self as if drifting into a restful sleep. Leisure doesn’t mean a lack of work; those who work endlessly are the ones who are lazy. Leisure is an act of stopping any activity that doesn’t correlate with the inner landscape and a return to the self; it is the active pursuit of existence and to become one with the world.

An artist, curator, and educator, Yuki Pan is also the executive director of the Museum of Contemporary Art, Taipei. Pan has collaborated with the Triangle Network in London, founded and overseen the HweiLan International Artists Workshop for seven years, and served as the executor of the Council for Cultural Affairs’ Art Intervene Space and the Council of Indigenous Peoples’ Taiwanese Indigenous Art Residency. In recent years, Pan has curated various events including the Taiwan East Coast Land Arts Festival.

The geographical landscape of Taitung and its secluded nature leaves room for the concepts proposed in Leisure. Hualien has always been a land with few visitors, home to roaring winds and rolling mountains, secluded from the world and a shelter for the soul. Each time as I take the train to escape the messy terrain of the Taipei basin, the vast sea comes into view after travelling through a series of black tunnels, finally thrusting me into the embrace of the scenery. As time slows down, I feel my senses awakening.

German scholar Josef Pieper points this out in Leisure, which expresses the philosophy that a leisurely life doesn’t exist after a busy work life ends but rather is a state of mind and soul where the individual is carefree, unrestricted, calm, at ease, and immersed in meditation.

As rocks in clean rivers and streams come into view, I find it hard to imagine these large rocks transformed into small cobblestones, or even soft sand, when they finally reach the Pacific Ocean. Plants thrive under the sun; the Taiwaniana Alsophila continue with the cycle of life, horsetail trees cast shadows on the land, and clouds drift in the sky, layering with the plains and mountains. All these sights seem to pull me back to the authenticity of this world, allowing me to encounter these views with a fresh pair of eyes.

這個經驗讓我不斷思考藝術的始源,企圖跳脫過

去藝術分類的方式,返回生活,回到藝術的原初,回 到一切正在發生、形成、無法歸類和命名的本源,再 重新出發,重新看這個世界。

This experience has inspired me to contemplate the origin of art. As I attempt to break free from the categorising of art, I manage to return to the beginning where it all started and began to take shape, the source which is unable to be classified and named. Then, I set off once again to reexamine the world.

The reason these artists are able to find a starting point for artistic creation through the triple paradox of secular life, ancestral religion, and Christianity is because of their intimate relationship with the original contract, which refers to the connection between individuals and their origin, nature, others, and supernatural forces. Their refusal to forget has become an ongoing inspiration, with many singer-songwriters dubbed “youngsters with old souls”.

Just when Taiwanese society is lost in a dilemma between ever more intense capitalism and inspiring social conscience, the indigenous community’s situation – being cast as outsiders and unable to participate and voice their opinions on the future of Taiwan – has proved to be a blessing in disguise. As they escape the chaos of society, these indigenous artists continue singing their ancient tunes, steadily in search of their own style, constructing their system of knowledge, and confirming their self-worth. I notice people disappearing in meaning throughout the world while their libido and signification return to their original state; this is the portrayal of the contemporary indigenous community in Taiwan.

在我規畫的東海岸大地藝術節中,許多原住民藝

術家的作品相當感人,像達鳳在台東東河鄉小馬部落

天主堂對面馬路邊的田地上的作品,一隻巨大的海馬, 打開肚子正好像一座達魯岸(工寮或聚會所),他用

漂流木、竹子等自然素材表現的得心應手。這件作品

的靈感來自小馬部落天主堂的神父們,近一世紀以來, 歐洲白冷教會的年輕神父們來到窮鄉僻壤的原住民部

落,他們的愛以及畢生的奉獻,就像深海裡的海馬,

當他們打開肚子把孩子一一生出之後,便安靜地死在 深海裡,就像神父們一輩子不為人知的奉獻。當達鳳 帶大家到教堂的後院,夕陽下,溫暖的陽光照著七座 白色墳墓,這一剎那大家都非常感動。

Throughout the Taiwan East Coast Land Arts Festival, which I organised, many indigenous artists presented works that were particularly touching, such as Tafong’s work on the roadside field across from the Piyuhu Catholic Church in Donghe, Taitung. A large seahorse with an open abdomen resembling Taluan (which means work or gathering place), it skilfully using natural materials such as driftwood and bamboo as a means of expression. The work was inspired by the priests of the church. For almost a century, young priests of the European Bethlehem Church have travelled to this remote and impoverished indigenous area, silently devoting their life and love to the area, just like the seahorse, dying quietly in the depths of the sea after giving birth. As Tafong guides visitors to the backyard of the church, the warmth of the setting sun lights up seven white graves, touching all who see the view.

近 20 年來台灣原住民藝術的發展令人驕傲,從

山地人、山胞到原住民;從博物館到美術館;從新原 始藝術到現代藝術;從觀光節慶到表演藝術;從部落 到國際;從傳統工藝到創意產業;從自發性藝術事件 到官方的藝術節,都能看到一個清楚的發展軌跡,以 及一個燦爛的未來。

The development of indigenous art in Taiwan for the past 20 years has made many proud. From the natural environment to its residents, museums to art galleries, new primitive art to modern art, tourism festivals to performance art, villages to the international stage, traditional crafts to the creative industry, and spontaneous art events to official art festivals, the track of development is clear to all and points to a spectacular future.

「聽不懂卻哭了出來」是不少人聽過阿 美族歌手 Suming Rupi(舒米恩.魯碧) 表演後的感想,他的清亮嗓音與真摯聲 線,突破語言隔閡,給予聽眾難以言喻 的力量與感動。舒米恩透過創作,將資 源與產業帶入部落,凝聚族群歸屬與認 同。種種耕耘獲金曲獎、金馬獎、金音 獎與總統文化獎的肯定。

Many people say they “shed tears despite not understanding the lyrics” when listening to Amis singer Suming Rupi. Suming’s silvery tones and genuine sentiments transcend language. He brings resources and inspires industry among tribe members while also fostering a sense of belonging and identity in them. Suming’s works have won him the Golden Melody Award, the Golden Horse Award, the Golden Indie Music Award, and the Presidential Cultural Award.

我是阿美族原住民,家鄉在臺東都蘭。以前大家

覺得花蓮、臺東很原始,不會想來,因爲少了溝通機 會,互不了解,產生敵我的意識形態。不過大家共同 生活在這片土地上,總要認識左右鄰居,知道誰跟你

在一起。所以當媒體和網路蓬勃發展,資訊變得透明,

些是我的成長環境,也是養分。我很早就知道自己熱

愛創作,除了持續寫歌、唱歌,這幾年和夥伴一起辦 音樂節、開演唱會,讓美好的音樂,不再只在部落裡 傳唱,用更多方式打通大家認識部落的路。我們做了

I am particularly affectionate about my hometown. The soil, flowing seawater and rivers, the breeze of Dulan, animals and plants, and tribal ceremonies and events are deeply woven into the world that I grew up in and nourish my life. I realised my creative passion from a young age and have continued to write and sing songs ever since. In recent years, I’ve partnered with a few friends to organised music festivals and concerts, hoping beautiful works of music can spread outside of tribes and become a channel for more people to become familiar with our culture. Our efforts include the Wawa No Liyal and Amis Music Festival, which brings tribes together and introduces musicians

I’m an Amis aborigine from Dulan, Taitung. In the past, people had the impression of Hualien and Taitung as remote, rural places and rarely had the desire to visit them. I believe this impression was due to a lack of communication, leading to misunderstanding. The fact remains that we are living on the same land and should get to know one another. With the boom of the media and the internet, information has become more and more transparent. As long as Taiwan society can have an open and welcoming mindset, we can exchange knowledge and skills, enabling interaction and dialogue. Today, Hualien and Taitung have become popular travel destinations.

和珍惜。在國外,僑胞積極地跟我用臺語對話、大家

I believe “no one can truly exist without history”. Only when an individual is deeply rooted in culture can he or she be confident when interacting with the world. We are seldom taught to think about “who are we”, but without the nourishment of culture, we have no idea about our

position in the world or our cultural foundation. When this happens, our work is merely the shadow of others, lacking confidence and individuality. I am fond of Taiwanese culture and think we should cherish our heritage. When I am abroad, oversea Chinese often make an effort to talk with me in Taiwanese, and many people cry when listening to me sing in Amis. When I witness the longing for Taiwan and the sense of identity of these people, I often wish we could be more confident.

名人 However, let me stress that I think it’s important that we expand our horizons. The Japanese invented their own version of rock ‘n’ roll, visual kei; as for bossa nova, the Japanese have Lisa Ono. The Japanese have never forgotten their own identity when learning from foreign cultures. I am an Amis aborigine from Taiwan and a member of the world. I maintain an open mindset to learn from the world, while at the same time using my mother tongue and symbols from my culture to allow my tribe to be seen by the world. Looking back to my first album, my approach of combining the Amis language with electronic dance music was an attempt to disrupt people’s understanding of folk music and world music, and to disrupt people’s expectations of indigenous music.

三、四年前,我去了新喀里多尼亞,和當地的原

住民交流,待了快一個月,陳潔瑤導演將整個過程拍

成紀錄片《漂流遇見你》。這座南太平洋的島國上,

雷鬼音樂流行了幾十年,但這裡的雷鬼融入了自己的 傳統節奏,很不一樣。那時他們問我:「你們臺灣的

節奏是什麼?」我很順地回答:「嘣~噠噠,嘣~噠 噠噠~」這是一個我覺得很特別的臺灣的節奏,你可

以在《高山青》、《來去台東》或是很多原住民歌曲 裡找到。中華民國來臺灣初期的音樂,不少有受到日 本演歌影響,但你在演歌裡找不到這節奏,它比較像 是臺灣音樂人發展出來的,臺語、中文等不同語言都 適用,是跨族群的。

About three or four years ago, I visited New Caledonia and spend almost one month with the indigenous people there. Director Laha Mebow recorded the encounter and made it into a documentary, Ça Fait Si Longtemps. Reggae music has been popular on the Pacific island

for decades, but the reggae of the island is one of a kind, having mixed with the local traditional rhythm. The people of New Caledonia asked me: “What is the rhythm of Taiwan?” I demonstrated a unique Taiwanese rhythm that can be heard in songs such as Green High Mountain, Let’s Go To Taitung, and various indigenous music. The musical style during the early years of the Republic of China was influenced by Japanese enka, but the rhythm that I demonstrated was not from enka. The rhythm was developed by the Taiwanese and transcends ethnicity, applying to Taiwanese, Mandarin, and other languages alike.

究竟「臺灣的節奏」是什麼?這個問題連同那沒有名 字的節奏,不停在我腦袋裡轉。雖然節奏沒有系統性

的被記載,做田野調查真的有夠困難的,不過也因為 這樣開放的狀態,給了創作者很大的想像和空間,我

正在準備下一張專輯,會以這個節奏為基礎發展詞曲。 作為一位轉譯者,我希望持續透過音樂創作,跨越語

言的隔閡,讓大家看到原住民的美好。我想,這是最 好展現文化力量的方式,也是我一直在做的事情。

What is “the rhythm of Taiwan”? This question, along with the nameless rhythm that I demonstrated, lingered in my mind. Although these rhythms were not recorded systematically, and field research has its challenges, this also provides an openness that leaves space for imagination among artists. I am currently preparing for my next album and plan to compose works based on this rhythm. As a “musical translator”, I hope to continue the mission of transcending language barriers through music to show more people the beauty of indigenous culture. I believe this to be the best method of displaying the power of culture; this is also what I have always been working on.

The 2018 Ever Rich Airport Art Festival gives back to society by inviting local and international travellers at airports across the country to slow down and experience the authentic aesthetics of Taiwan. For this year’s festival, Ever Rich is partnering with the Indigenous Peoples Cultural Foundation, aboriginal artists, Fu Jen Catholic University’s College of Fashion and Textiles, and noted graphic designer Kentsai Lee. During the opening ceremony at Taoyuan International Airport on 31 July, a runway show presented fashion designs prepared by Fu Jen Catholic University’s College of Fashion and Textiles as well as by Yi-Ning Chen. International fashion designer Sabra Andre also exhibited his collection inspired by aboriginal patterns, while awardwinning indigenous musician Suming was on hand to provide the art of song.

EVERRICH EVERART presents indigenous artists’ works made of diverse materials and techniques in airports nationwide. Based on Taiwan's geographic regions, we give you “South – the Origin”, presented in woodcut; “Center – the Transformation”, in two- and three dimensional artworks; and “North – the Modernisation”, in clothing artifacts. The diversity of materials emphasises the multiculturalism of Taiwan as well as the creativity and love for the land of the Taiwanese. Its organiser is the Indigenous Peoples Cultural Foundation, which works to promote art among the country’s native people. The award was established at a time of generational change, as older indigenous artists who had lived through the abolishment of Martial Law passing the torch to younger artists who had come of age amidst globalisation and were turning back to their mother cultures to discover their unique identity.

Pahawlan Cilan, Paiwan Tribe 母親為排灣族,父親則是外省人,原住民

和漢民族混血的巴豪嵐.吉嵐,在創作的思考

裡也不斷透過跨越來探求自我。從自己的認同、

個人的生命感受、原住民傳統文化及神靈傳說 讓他作品裡充滿了豐富的意象,也造就獨樹一 格屬於自己的符號圖騰。如同這次展出的雕塑 作品《歌喉者》,呈現原住民愛好自然,勇敢 唱出生命美好的旋律。

Pahawlan’s mother is from Paiwan, and his father is a Chinese migrated to Taiwan. With the heritages of Paiwan and Han, Pahawlan Cilan crosses the border between the two to explore his own identity when he’s making his art. His works are rich in symbolism as he mixes in his own identity, life experience, indigenous cultures and mythology to produce special patterns exclusive to his own works. Fashion designer Sabra Andre, of Paiwan heritage, wandered onto a career path in fashion design by chance. He left his tribe at a young age and while studying art developed a fascination with symbols and patterns, which are at the core of Paiwan culture. These became his exclusive muses. 杜寒菘 / 魯凱族

Pacake Taugadhu, Rukai Tribe 如同許多當代的原住民一樣,求學的過

程,從部落到城市,但杜寒菘的父母堅持以母 語與他對話、講述部落故事與家族中的種種

事蹟,讓他依然對自己的部落文化保有強烈的

情感聯繫,也成了他創作的底蘊。此次展出 的作品,取材自魯凱族和排灣族的神話故事,

將熊和豹之間的趣事轉化為立體雕塑的作品, 希望讓每個孩童了解古老文化傳說,也讓民 眾了解如何守護山林,體會那些藏在作品裡 的深義。

透 過 藝 術, 民 眾 能 重 溫 那 古 老 有 智 慧 的 故 事。Through the arts, we can again hear and learn ancient

stories and wisdom.

Just like other indigenous people in modern era, Pacake moved from tribes to cities to receive education. But his parents insist on talking to him with their mother tongues and pass on tribal and family stories to him so that he has strong connection and affection to his tribal culture which later inspire him when he’s making his own artworks. Those works of him included in this exhibition was inspired by Rukkai and Paiwan myths, which Pacake turned anecdotes of bears and leopards into sculptures to introduce ancient myths to children and remind people to protect mountains and forests and grasp the depth of meanings in his works. 臺中國際機場 Taichung International Airport

古老手藝,秉持著內心對原始自然回歸與連結的渴 望,織造簡樸而溫暖的當代美學,呼喚每個人內在

的自然靈魂之光!主要以原民捕捉溪水中魚蝦所使

用的傳統工具「Sanku 竹藤編魚筌」為基礎延伸創 作,揉合樹皮布、草木染等自然纖維,編造出具絕 編織纖維,交織出大自然的樂章。 Weaving fabrics together reveals the symphony of nature.

Fibre artists Shu-Yen Chen and Tuwak Tuyaw run the handmade studio Paterongan Art. Their insistence on using local, traditional materials and craftsmanship along with their desire to return to and connect with nature help them produce humble artworks with warmth and contemporary aesthetics. 撒古流.巴瓦瓦隆 / 排灣族

Sakuliu Pakialalang, Paiwan Tribe 出身屏東排灣族工藝世家,為了延續逐漸凋零的部落文化,長年投入部落田

調,從耆老們的記憶找尋、分享,再整理成圖文並茂的手稿,並且創立「部落有教 室」,啟蒙更多創作者;而這些田調手稿,則建構其創作的文化內涵。他的藝術成 就深受各界肯定,2018 年榮獲「第 20 屆國家文藝美術獎」。 Born in a Paiwan craftsman family in Pingtung, Sakuliu Pakialalang has devoted to revitalise dying tribal cultures through long-term field research and documenting. He interviewed the elders on tribal memory and stories, which he then applied words and drawings to document, and he founded “Classroom in the Tribe” to enlighten more artists. His own works are based on those records he amassed in his field research and won him lots of praise; he’s one of the winners of the National Award of Arts in 2018.

Etan Pakialalang, Paiwan Tribe 身為 Pulima 家族出身的藝術家,伊誕在藝術領域長年耕耘,創作媒材多

As an artist born in Pulima family, Etan works in art industry for long and has diverse practices of art. In 2009, Typhoon Morakot devastated his tribe badly and that changed his art practice as he developed “venecik” techniques through pattern drawing, layering, carving, and colouring to dissolve boundaries between different art forms and present humbleness and mystery of indigenous cultures. 2018 昇恆昌藝術季主視覺設計,邀請了台灣知名設計師 李根在操刀,具有敏銳洞察力的他,對於多元文化的宏 大包容,反映在他的設計作品上,面對與台灣文化扣連

的設計題目時,總能透過對歷史文獻與當代生活的深入 觀察,從文化內涵中提煉出適當的元素,轉化為不落俗 套的視覺呈現。

這一次,他從對台灣原住民族文化脈絡的認識出發,重

新理解這個題目,並運用嫻熟的設計語彙詮釋這個題目 背後的深遠意義——「融合是前面的過程,共生才是最 後的成果。」

Ever Rich invited renowned Taiwanese designer Ken-Tsai Lee to create the key visual for its art festival, 2018 EVERRICH EVERART. Lee is observant artist who encompasses multiple cultures; and indeed, these characteristics are present in his works. Whenever he has a project relating to Taiwanese culture, he seeks out the relevant cultural essence in both historical archives and contemporary lifestyles, and proceeds to transform them into unconventional visual works. This time, Lee began with the indigenous cultures of Taiwan, re-examining their profound meanings and then applying his masterful design skills to interpret them: “Fusion (NEW) is the former step, cohabitation (BORN) is the final result.”

The Egg: A Form of Inclusiveness

若要談到這次「融合共生」主視覺的設計理念,

或許得先從古希臘時期即困擾至今的大哉問聊起,「到

底是先有雞,還是先有蛋?」,李根在於思考的過程 中,意外對於「蛋」這個再平凡不過的物體有了不同 的領略。

To dissect the concept behind “NEW BORN,” we must refer to the old question dating back to the Ancient Greeks:

“Which came first, the chicken or the egg?” Lee had a wise insight into the egg – perhaps the most ordinary thing in the world – while he was brainstorming for this project.

「與其試著回答這個循環因果的問題,我想提出

的是,『蛋』這個狀態所乘載的意義。我認為『蛋』

代表的是『一體』,它同時是生命的產物、又能讓生

命誕生。」而如此特別的狀態,正與他腦海裡「共生」 的概念不謀而合,於是這次藝術季主視覺的主要輪廓 很快便成形了。

“I would like to discuss the meaning of eggs being in existence rather than resolving the question of causation,” Lee says. “I consider eggs comprehensive, it a new life born and itself gives birth to new lives, too.” The egg’s special status collided with the idea of

主題企劃 cohabitation (BORN) in Lee’s mind, and the contours of the key visual appeared in his mind soon after.

將每個點連成線 From Dots to Lines

「你無法預先把每個點串連起來,只有在回顧

時,你才會明白那些點是如何連在一起的。」蘋果公

司創辦人賈伯斯曾經以這麼一段話,說明他大學休學 時期修習的書法課,最後如何奇妙地在設計第一台麥 金塔電腦時派上用場。而類似的經歷也發生在李根在 設計這次主視覺的過程中。

Apple founder Steve Jobs once said: “You can't connect the dots looking forward; you can only connect them looking backwards.” The quote is a reflection on how a typography class Jobs had taken after dropping out of college ended up proving useful 10 years later during the creation of the first Macintosh computer. A similar experience happened to Lee while he was working on the Ever Rich case.

「在我那年代,念復興美工科的學生,都要做一

個『圓周 36 點』的基礎圖學訓練,我們要用針筆將 圓周上均分的 36 個點全部畫線,彼此連接。畫完 36

乘以 36 條線後,老師最後會以這 1296 條線中間構

成圓形的完整度作為評分標準。」除了圓形要夠圓,

筆墨還得平滑一致,回想起那樣的嚴格訓練,李根在 笑說「那簡直是噩夢中的噩夢」。

“When I was still a student at Fu-Hsin Trade & Arts School, we practiced ‘the 36 circle points’ for basic graphics. We used technical pens to draw lines connecting 36 dots on the circumference of a circle. After we finished the 36x36 lines, our instructor marked the 1296 lines according to the completeness of the circle they formed.” The circle had to be round and the ink smooth and consistent. Training like that was “a nightmare within a nightmare”, Lee says with a laugh.

萬萬沒想到,於學生時代紮實卻痛苦萬分的習作,

竟在構想「融合共生」視覺時突然浮現。相較過去以筆 尺連接各個點的費時作法,現在拜電腦科技所賜,只要 動滑鼠設定幾個指令,1296 條線一瞬間就可以出現,

而且毫釐不差地在中間留下一個完美的圓。不過,正是

以往左手扶著尺、右手拿著筆,在每個點之間繪製線 條,再讓每個線條交疊出圖形的經驗,讓李根在深刻感 受到「融合」的內涵——哪怕過程可能是緩慢、甚至艱 辛的,最後總能形塑出在嚴格規律中內蘊著強大生命力

的圖像。源於記憶裡的切身感受,在主視覺設計當中, 便能看見李根在化用線條交織的技法,在蛋形輪廓內部 打造出具有無限可能的想像空間。

To Lee’s surprise, the exercise emerged from the recesses of his mind when he was working on “NEW BORN”. In contrast to the exhausting use of pens and rulers to connect the dots, technology now allows us to draw 1296 lines in the blink of an eye. With just a few clicks, a perfect circle can be formed. However, the old illustration exercise – with left hand holding the ruler and right hand holding the pen – gave Lee a new perspective on the meaning of fusion (NEW). The process may require great time and effort, but it yields images with vitality. Lee’s ultimate egg-shaped design speaks of infinity, with the lines weaving around each other just as Lee had created them in the past.

Interestingly, lines of different directions reflect the weaving tradition of Taiwan’s indigenous people. “The use of colours in indigenous cultures is outstanding, so I used a colour wheel to present the shades of colours.” Layering up the lines of brilliant colours, Lee created an eye-catching work featuring an exquisite, colourful arrangement.

綜觀李根在過往的設計作品,不難發現,他喜歡

且擅長讓自己的設計進入常民的生活場域,且往往都能 與地景恰如其分地結合,從他為「2014 城南藝事」及

「2015 台灣設計師週」設計的主視覺應用便能明顯體 會。基於「參與式設計」的思考模式上,他對於將「平 面視覺立體化」相當駕輕就熟,而且不斷創出新意。

主題企劃 “When 2D images are transformed into 3D works, a new dimension is born,” he says. “For this design, ‘weaving’ makes a new dimension.” Lee and Ever Rich will showcase the key visual design at the departure area of Terminal 2 at Taoyuan International Airport, where 2D design works are turned into 3D installations with the use of lines weaving around each other and integrating into the landscape of the airport. The key visual can also be found on all the exhibition areas and brochures, introducing the artworks at Taiwan’s four different airports and showing visitors the multicultural aesthetics of Taiwan.

Reviewing Lee’s works, it’s not difficult to see that the artist is fond of and talented at pouring his designs into people’s daily life; they always perfectly match their landscape and context, as demonstrated particularly well by the visuals he created for the 2014 Taipei South Town Art Festival and the 2015 Taiwan Designers’ Week. Based on the “participatory design” concept, he explores stereoscopic graphics with skill and innovation.

天下的知名設計師,他仍然回到台灣這塊土地上。「我 之所以能夠胸有成竹地轉換這些文化內涵,是因為自己

對於這些文化有一定程度的認識。」為了打造 2018 昇 恆昌藝術季的主視覺,他不但回頭梳理了個人的生命

體驗,也再一次檢視這座島嶼的文化內涵,最後完美

詮釋了台灣多元族裔文化的融合與共生——這個設計, 像是獻給生活於這塊土地所有族群的禮物,也是對於未 來世代最誠摯的祝福。

Like the crowds at the terminal, Lee himself used to bustle through the airport as he shuttled between Taipei and New York. However, despite earning quite some renown abroad, he has decided to settle in Taiwan. “[Here,] I can apply elements of different cultures to my work with confidence because I have sufficient knowledge of them,” he says. In designing the key visual for 2018 EVERRICH EVERART, he went back through his own life experiences and re-examined the cultures of this island, interpreting fusion and cohabitation – the “NEW BORN” – of this country’s many cultures and ethnicities.

成亦寧:母親點燃了我的心

有著阿美族與排灣族血統,23 歲的實踐大學服裝設計系畢業 生成亦寧,於 2017 發表的時裝設計《致母親》系列,在原

民傳統元素上,大玩色彩與材質創意,不但獲台灣金點設計 獎肯定,也踏上北京、上海的時裝週伸展台,今年更獲得武 漢國際時裝週紅 T 盃世界青年設計邀請賽銅獎。

Twenty-three-year-old Cheng Yi-Ning has heritage of the Amis and Paiwan tribes and is a graduate of Shih Chien University, having majored in fashion design. In 2017, she won Taiwan’s Golden Pin Design Award for her fashion collection, “To My Mother”, which features creative uses of brilliant colours and materials inspired by traditional indigenous designs. She has also attended fashion shows in Beijing and Shanghai and won the bronze medal of Wuhan Fashion Week’s Red T Trophy International Youth Designers Invitational with the collection.

這是成亦寧以《致母親》為名設計時裝系列,作

為實踐大學畢業作品發表後,在臉書上寫的感言。但

她對母親的感恩早已溢於言表,成為伸展台上一套套

Cheng posted this to Facebook after presenting her collection, “To My Mother”, for her graduate exhibition. For it, she took her ineffable gratitude to her mother and turned it into fabulous designs. From sky blue and pale turquoise to bright orange and violet, the saturated colours coalesce into broad shoulders or sway like beads. Hemp ropes conclude the design as its hem, depicting the shape of freedom, while the cloth tied to the legs speaks of capability and experience, like the female warrior of a fantasy film.

她們是成亦寧眼中的母親形象,「在我眼中,媽

媽是個堅強且厲害的女強人,靠自己的力量撐起整個 家。因為她要扶養三個小孩,時常加班,但並不會因 工作忙碌而減少對孩子的關愛。」

These traits are of Cheng’s mother. “In my eyes, Mum is a tough and amazing superwoman. She has not only supported our family on her own, but also maintained a good relationship with us. Even though she’s had to work overtime to raise her three children, she’s never been absent in our life.”

主題企劃 Cheng grew up in a single-parent family, and her affection for her mother gives a deeper-than-usual meaning to her works, including their specific styles, colours, and materials. She fills the shoulder pads of her blazers and scarves with soundproof foam, symbolising the dual identities of her mother: an amiable mother (like the soft foam) as well as a harsh father (indicated by the broad shoulders). The gradual gradient, from light pink to deep blue, reflects her mother’s aging throughout the years, as she has grown from a young woman without burden to a veteran with a family to support.

with indigenous elements like beads, cross-stitch, knitting, cloth tied to the legs, and bold colour schemes. After Cheng grew up, she returned to her tribe in Taitung to seek out her mother culture, elements of which she infuses into her works. Her collection is the result of collaboration between herself and her mother: Cheng designs the pieces while her mother, who used to be an arts and craft teacher, makes the accessories. “Guarding you, loving you, supporting you are Mum’s lifelong responsibilities” was Cheng’s mother’s touching comment on her daughter’s Facebook post.

The fusion and creativity in Cheng’s choice of fabrics come from multiple cultures. She also enjoys the experimental process of mixing fabrics, such as in order to design her own patterns. Instead of using cliché patterns, Cheng uses elaborate cloud-like colour “patches” she makes herself by painting on an acrylic board and then peeling the layer off and sewing it onto her clothes. Although that particular experiment worked, they don’t always end up perfect. But she continues with them regardless due to her fondness for the warmth of handmade works.

Today, Cheng works at Taiwan Fund of Children and Family as a product designer and an instructor, teaching single and disadvantaged mothers to make handmade bags as a means of financially supporting their families. She is aiming to save for further study overseas. With her mother in her corner, Cheng is flourishing into a great fashion designer before Taiwan’s eyes.

The College of Fashion and Textiles at Fu Jen Catholic University embraces the vibrant cultures of traditional couture and combines them with contemporary aesthetics, inspiring faculty and alumni to stage a sensational fashion show at the 2018 EVERRICH EVERART event.

Taoyuan International Airport’s Terminal 2 looked different on 31 July as a group of male and female models walked into an EVERRICH EVERART press conference, bringing a dynamic display of fashion into the bustling airport. The couture worn by the models reflected the Fu Jen faculty’s exploration of indigenous cultures, using innovate designs and modern tailoring techniques to integrate traditional patterns with trendy colour schemes.

Indeed, both indigenous and non-indigenous people alike may be said to have some degree of indigenous soul. In this case, indigenous as well as non-indigenous designers presented their works on the same stage, illustrating how different ethnicities cohabitate in Taiwan and how multiple cultures can be fused together into magnificent works of art.

Fu Jen’s College of Fashion and Textiles has been collecting couture made of traditional textiles since 1976, with the vibrant cultures they represent included in the school’s creative teaching strategies. Now, it’s the work of Bolin Wu, an assistant professor at the college, and Hsinlun Liu, a college alumni, that’s on the catwalk. And, before your departure, don't forget to stop by and appreciate the fashions of Shao-tzu Chen and Ya-chuan Chang, both students at the college.

不同於原住民設計師對傳統圖騰或配色的敏感

Fu Jen’s faculty found inspiration from diverse sources in addition to traditional indigenous designs. Wu, for example, was inspired by the collection of Shihsanhang Museum, in particular its sienna ceramic pots. Made by the Pingpu peoples of Kavalan and Ketagalan between 500 and 1,800 years ago, they appear humble and siennacoloured at the first sight but actually have gradients, of dark brown to grey to light grey, which inspired the colour schemes of Wu’s own designs. The pot’s simple patterns are transformed into ancient-style modern accessories, highlighting the hems and top fronts of her works.

At a time when most fashion designers are striving to produce trendy outfits using high-tech materials, Chang returned to natural materials, such as cotton, and ancient techniques, such as dying and sewing by hand. Her “Sacrifice” series utilises only two colours: white, to symbolise the initial state of the world, and red, to symbolise royal status. It was actually the gods and goddess of mountains and the fairies alongside them that inspired her to design this collection of six outfits.

兵器相接的戰事中,火藥爆炸的橘紅色火光,與刀劍 鐵器上橘紅色的斑斑鏽蝕。另一主色軍綠色,既是樹 茂草長的原始求生場景,也是現代軍服的聯想。

Imagine that, in the near future, war leads to nuclear disaster and humans return to the mountains and live in foggy, hazy forests. Shao-tzu Chen’s “Under the Steam and Above the Appearance” series uses orange as one of its main tones to symbolise flames of the nuclear blasts and the flaking patches of rust on the blades and swords of war. The other main tone, military green, suggests natural scenery of trees and grass while also being linked with the colours of modern soldiers.

品牌成立至今邁入第 7 年,在台灣居家裝飾風潮

正興起時,Eye Candle 算是台灣市場上少數以居家裝

飾兼香氛為定位的獨立品牌,甚至從蠟燭本體製作、

包裝到調香都不假他人之手;由擅長平面的凱元負責 所有視覺設計,雕塑系畢業的凱文則負責手工雕刻,

一筆一畫地刻出眼前這些栩栩如生的造型蠟燭,精緻 擬真的外型結合繽紛的色彩,一推出就擄獲眾多時尚 品牌與海內外消費者的關注。

It’s been seven years since Eye Candle was established. At that time, home decoration was booming in Taiwan. To this day, Eye Candle remains one of the few independent brands in its segment in Taiwan who makes everything themselves: from the candles to the fragrances to the packaging. Kai-Yuan is skilled at visual design and as such is responsible for the overall aesthetics while Kai-Wen, who majored in sculpture, gives the candles their lively, vivid physical forms. The exquisite shapes and brilliant colours of their products won the brothers much attention from fashion brands as well as domestic and international customers upon their launch.

In its first four years, Eye Candle focused on the visual side of its products, rather than their scents, because of the great expense of ingredients used to create such fragrances. However, in the past few years, the brothers have delved deep into the aromas area, even going beyond existing prepared fragrances to create their own, giving their products a stronger identity in the process. “At the beginning, we just wanted to offer interesting and eye-catching products, but our customers these days have increasingly refined taste, and we’ve had to catch up with them,” Kai-Yuan says. “Also, because we ourselves are entering middle age and becoming more demanding regarding quality of life, we want something more than visual pleasure. Scents, by contrast, are more powerful, and they’re actually more important in modern life.” He says with a chuckle that for their particularly picky customers, they have invested in expensive French essential oils and worked diligently to mix scents to develop new diffusers and candles.

My Luggage Story

他的胃口,凱文則念念難忘柏林的博物館和日本的居 酒屋,每回在歐洲商展結束後,選貨店、男士髮廊和 自然歷史博物館通常是兩人的必訪去處。

Eye Candle’s market has expanded to include China, Hong Kong, Southeast Asia, Japan, and the West. Discussing their recent trips for studio events and exhibitions abroad, Kai-Yuan said he had been won over by the social engagement and exotic cultures of Southeast Asian countries whereas Kai-Wen was fond of the museums of Berlin and the pubs of Japan. Select shops, men’s hair salons, and natural history museums in Europe are their must-visit spots once the work part of the trip has concluded.

For Kai-Wen, natural history museums in Europe are particularly worthy of praise. For example, the National Museum of Natural History, located at the Garden of the Plants in Paris, boasts a shocking collection of specimen and bones of ancient animals; the embryos of animals and humans can be found there well. “Eye Candle has produced lots of decorative candles with the shapes of specimen and bones because we’re especially interested in anatomy and creepy things. Visiting museums gives us a chance to take a closer look at the biological structures of animals, leaving us lots of inspirational ideas.”

對不愛走觀光路線的凱元而言,男士理髮廳通常

是他第一個報到的地方,印象最深刻的是馬尼拉和越 南,常能找到整間店都是刺青潮男的髮廊,各個梳著

油頭且襯衫筆挺地為客人服務,通常兩百塊台幣的價 格就能享受高品質的服務,甚至還會為客人奉上精釀 啤酒,「到歐洲出差也會先往髮廊跑,總是要打扮得 體面一點才能在買家心中留下好印象。」凱元說道,

大概是香氛蠟燭品牌做久了,無形間對生活品質和自 身的儀容、氣味也會更加要求。

Kai-Yuan is not a fan of sightseeing spots; rather, a men’s hair salon is usually his first stop. Manila and Vietnam impressed him the most with their yuppie hairdressers, nearly all of whom had tattoos, slicked-back hair, and were dressed to the nines. Their high-quality service costs less than NT$200, and sometimes they also serve customers craft beer. “When I travel to Europe, my first stop is also a hair salon. A professional look gives your buyers a good impression.” In Kai-Yuan’s opinion, the longer he and his brother work on scented candles, the more demanding they are when it comes to their own quality of life, appearance, and scents.

也正努力著手開發新產品,期待 Eye Candle 除了造型 搶眼,也能擁有烙印人心的氣息,「回想成立品牌的 初衷,就是想要做我們自己都會喜歡,而且有趣、實 用也能走入生活的商品。」凱文表示,目前正積極開

發杯裝香氛蠟燭,透過較自然、中性素材的容器包裝, 與市面上主打奢華感的香氛品牌,和以往被消費者買 來送禮居多的造型蠟燭做出區隔,就是希望大家不只 有送禮時才會想到 Eye Candle,而是讓品牌與一般人 的生活有更緊密的連結。

Besides their ongoing exhibitions and workshops, the Teng brothers also spend a great deal of time and effort on making new products. They expect themselves to offer stylish candles with impressive aromas. “When we look back at our initial motivation, it was our own preferences, fun, and utility that dominated our design.” According to Kai-Wen, they are developing scented tin products using more natural and neutral packaging materials to distinguish their new lines from other luxury fragrance brands as well as their own decorative candles. They hope for their brand to spring up in customers’ minds in everyday life, not merely when they’re shopping for a gift.

店、民宿,只要把喜歡的香氛蠟片捲在一起、插上燭 蕊,就能享有令自己安心的味道,「和香水和擴香不 一樣的是,燃燒蠟燭能為空間除臭、除濕,而不是直

接覆蓋氣味。」他們相信:人通常只要看到火源、聞 到香氣,就能讓感官獲得很純粹的滿足與喜悅,而能

為消費者帶來如此正面的影響,就是他們經營品牌最 大的成就感來源。

Eye Candle is also aimed at producing fragrance products allowing customers to mix scents by themselves, such as

via wax slices. Customers can roll up the portable slices and assemble a wick on them to enjoy a comforting scent when at a hotel or Airbnb. “Unlike perfumes and diffusers, candles reduce the bad smells and humidity of a space rather than simply covering the odour up.” In addition, many people feel satisfied and blessed when they see the flame or smell the scent. According to the brothers, bringing this positive attitude to their customers gives them the greatest joy and sense of achievement, motivating them to keep running the brand.

Ever Rich Jewelry Design Award : In 2017, Ever Rich Jewelry (ERJ) organised a Jewelry design competition, featuring the theme, “Beauty of Taiwan”, which has received 505 submissions from 5 countries, an unprecedented record in jewelry design competitions.

從一張設計圖,到一件珠寶作 品,之間的距離有多遠呢?頒 獎典禮落幕後,昇恆昌珠寶費 時超過四個月的時間,致力實 現 學 子 們 的 未 竟 之 夢, 將 紙 張 上的設計圖,賦予生命,幻化成 閃耀動人的珠寶。 How much effort does it take to turn a design into a real piece of jewelry? Since the awards ceremony, ERJ has spent more than four months working to bring the dreams of these young artists to life, transforming their designs on papers into real, dazzling pieces of jewelry.

To further highlight the magnificence of the mountain ranges, the Formosan black bear as an element is blended into the design to strengthen the Taiwan imagery and visual tension. Moreover, the thickness of lines is arranged based on calligraphic stroke designs to present the beauty of the East.

As a result, ERJ revised the designs, seeking out materials and mounting solutions that reflected the original plans as closely as possible. The team also brought the

students to meet with craf tsman to discuss the mounting issues in person. After much deliberation and communication, designs that were practical but still similar to the originals were finalized, with the students gaining valuable jewelry-making experience in the process. 其中以金獎作品【脈】的製作難度最高,由於熊頭的 立體度不足,難以和下方山脈做連結,特別引導學生 以黏土建模,了解立體結構的重要性和影響,完成局 部的修改。 The gold winner, “Range”, was the most challenging piece when it came to production. The bear’s head didn’t pop enough, making it not distinguishable enough from the mountain ranges below. So ERJ introduced the student to modelling clay, teaching the importance of structure and ensuring a perfect revised design. 銀獎作品【臺灣梅花鹿】則為尋找材料費盡心思。在 篩選上百枝後,終於找到在形狀、疏密度、律動感等 各方面與原始設計圖最契合的天然珊瑚枝。 Finding the optimal materials for the silver-winning piece, “Formosan Sika Deer”, also required diligence. The hard work of the ERJ paid off handsomely when its hunt turned up hundreds of coral pieces, including more than enough that matches the shape and style of the original design.

「臺灣梅花鹿」以奔跑跳躍的臺灣梅花鹿,表現「精、氣、神」的活躍氣息,身 上的斑點可隨動作擺盪,並以大小層次展現律動感。 Formosan Sika Deer features a galloping jumping deer for its lively vigor in "spirits, energy and demeanor". The spots on antlers sway as one moves about. A sense of rhythm is expressed in gradations.

「望島」以葡萄牙人所望出去的視 角設計臺灣。此胸針能轉換角度, 形成阿里山眺望日出的風采;也能 垂直配戴,便是臺灣的美麗圖騰。 Island Gazing is designed from the Portuguese's point of view taking in the sight of the astonishing beauty of high mountains. The brooch can be worn reversed to simulate the magic of a sunrise over Mountain Ali (Alishan) and also worn vertically to become a beautiful totem of this treasured island, Taiwan.

To make the piece extra dazzling, ERJ suggested that the student utilize a thicker piece of gemstone and change the small stones. 光譜計劃:看見光與愛

2018 Ever Rich Spectrum Program

第三屆昇恆昌光譜計畫首次移師澎湖。 The Ever Rich Spectrum Program expands to Penghu for the first time in 2018.

昇恆昌與江許笋文教基金會,已連續 3 年推動「光譜計 畫」觀光公益營,透過在「不山不市」學區舉辦營隊活

動,讓不在山區、也不在市區的學校,獲得更多的關懷

與資源。活動以「國際觀光」、「地方特色連結」、「學

生需求」、以及「公益關懷」為四大主軸,串連了企業、 大學青年和資源相對較匯乏的學子,透過三者的交流與 匯集,激盪出不一樣的火花!

Over the past three years, Ever Rich and the Chiang Education Foundation have been committed to the Spectrum Program, which organises summer camps about tourism at schools between urban and remote areas. The events focus on four themes: international tourism, local features, student needs, and charitable care. They’re aimed at connecting corporations, college students, and teenagers in order to inspire innovative ideas and experiences.

第三屆的昇恆昌「光譜計畫」共有來自全台各地

40 多隊的隊伍報名參加,經過激烈的提案競賽,最終 優勝隊伍分別由澎湖科技大學的 C.K. 研究室以及銘傳 大學旅遊創新實驗社拿下,前者帶領了澎湖地區 15

所國中約 60 位的青年學子,後者則前進了位於桃園 平鎮區的東安國中,他們以豐富的營隊籌辦經驗,設 計出貼近在地學子所需的課程,四天三夜的暑期夏令 營,獲得了熱烈廣泛的迴響。

Over 40 college teams participate in the Spectrum Program this year, and only two proposals are accepted. They are students from the National Penghu University of Science and Technology and Ming Chuan University. The former has led 60 teenagers from 15 junior high schools on the island county of Penghu, while the latter has organised the activity with Taoyuan’s Dongan Junior High School. Based on their extensive experiences, they’ve successfully designed four-day summer camps around students’ needs.

首度移師澎湖

First Time in Penghu

伴隨海洋環境而生的澎湖,擁有別具一格的自然

生態以及人文風情,在地的澎湖科技大學隊伍遂以自 身經驗出發,將主題定為「海洋探索家」,透過結合 地方文化與知識,規劃出系列寓教於樂的課程,包括 海洋教育、在地文化、環境保育以及依照學生興趣取 向的專業課程。

As an island chain, Penghu has unique natural and cultural environments. Local college students have utilised their personal experiences to develop Ocean Explorer, an informative and fun program that covers ocean education, local culture, environmental conservation, and professional lessons.

After doing so last year, students from Ming Chuan University were again selected for the event. They combine local culture and the tourism industry in their program, in which they lead Dongan Junior High School students to the neighbouring Longgang area. Many local residents have family heritage in China’s Yunnan province or the border regions of Thailand, and this is reflected in their cuisine. To understand local features, the students also visit a traditional market and a noodle restaurant. After the tour, they brainstorm marketing strategies to transform local resources into tourism assets.

在環境保育的課程中,澎湖大學隊伍帶領著學生們造 訪水產養殖場的復育珊瑚基地,亦身體力行至後寮沙 灘進行淨灘,共同清理了岸邊的廢棄物,同時設計課 程介紹海漂垃圾,引導學生透過藝術創作、讓海廢再 生,培養他們對這片土地的熱情與關懷。

In the sessions on environmental conservation, students learn about sustainable development in local regions, such as by visiting a coral reef conservation laboratory and cleaning up waste on the seashore. Students also use this marine debris to create artworks and study how waste influences our world and life on it.

回到本島,再次蟬聯冠軍的銘傳大學,延續著上

屆學長姐傳承的經驗,來到桃園平鎮的東安國中。一

向擅長將在地文化融入觀光產業的銘傳大學隊伍,在 這次課程中規劃了一場滇緬之旅,帶領學員造訪鄰近 的龍岡區,此區居民大多來自中國雲南和泰緬邊境, 飲食以米線和米干為著名。為了深入了解在地特色,

他們一同造訪了忠貞傳統市場和國旗屋。一整天的參 訪後,大學生們帶著學員一起發揮創意提出推廣地方 的行銷新見解,分享交流如何將在地資源轉化為觀光 資產。

This year’s annual Ever Rich and Sanrio event, held over summer at the Taoyuan International Airport, was themed “Travel with Confidants”. Everyone has a few confidants in their life – people with whom they are almost as close as couples. To celebrate these relationships, Ever Rich and the Taiwan arm of Japanese design giant Sanrio organised a Chinese Valentine’s Day event with help from its most famous character, Hello Kitty, plus a few of her friends. It was opened by the only primary school honour guard team in Taoyuan, from Xingfu Primary School. The performance received rapturous applause from the audience, who were then greeted by Hello Kitty and KIKILALA.

Someone else who’s garnered a lot of attention recently is Sanrio’s newest character, Aggretsuko. Her appearance at the airport marked her debut in Taiwan. Her story is one that quite a few may relate to: after being on the receiving end of some harsh treatment from her boss and colleagues, she hides in a toilet stall and relieves pressure by shouting along with a heavy rock tune. The singalong helps her regain her composure and she turns back into a calm red panda, making for a humorous contrast. During this summer vacation, Ever Rich has introduced not just exclusive Aggretsuko merchandise but also karaoke, giving travellers the chance to sing their heart out before boarding their flight.

Driving along Provincial Highway No. 9, you see the blue Pacific to one side and the Dawu Mountain Range on the other. Countless myths and stories are centred on the rivers and valleys of this area, with hunters singing aloud and the millet blowing in the breeze. This is the south of the east and the east of the south – a mysterious place to foreign eyes. To visit Southern Taiwan from the island country’s east coast, one must travel via the South-Link Highway, which lies by the ocean and crouches in the mountains, on whose slopes tribes live. However, few people are knowledge of the area’s vibrant cultural and natural treasures. Have you ever thought of this “hidden south”?

故事的開始要從一條被世人遺忘的舊路開始說

起,泛藍太平洋旁,人煙荒涼之處,滿天星空不足為 奇,被黑暗包圍不以為懼,來到這,注定走上不一樣 的路。大概是三年前全然地放下台北生活與工作,移

居到了台東偏鄉,像極乘著汪洋之舟,即便不適水性, 很快會被自然給馴服,順著海波的律動行進。

This story began with a long-forgotten track. It sat on a barren area next to the big blue Pacific Ocean; stars are always out here, so there’s no reason to fear the night. The track leads to another world. About three years ago, I gave up my job and life in Taipei to migrate to a small town in Taitung County on Taiwan’s southeast coast. Doing so was like sailing a small boat on the big ocean: at first you’re seasick but not long after you’ve gotten used to the ocean and are in sync with its current.

and understanding. Thus, my husband and I initiated an art residency program at the elementary school where he works (and which had only one graduate at a recent graduation ceremony). For the program, we invited artists to reside on campus. The artists lived with the students, teaching and learning with them to show them another path they might be able to take in the future. Meanwhile, the participating artists gained special life experiences and inspiration from the countryside.

生活是多麼悠閒愜意,似乎每天都躺在沙灘飲酒作樂。 實際上,鄉下生活的不便利性,生活不再理所當然,

想來份水餃請先從桿麵皮做起,生病要到醫院的路程 病都快好了。大可選擇住在市區,但將錯過這一切通 往自由的美好過程。

For me, adapting to the town wasn’t too difficult, but it’s not like Taitung is a place of endless fun where you can sit on the beach and drink all day. The inconvenience of country life here means you don’t take anything for granted. Want dumplings? Start rolling the pastry. Want to see a doctor? You’ll feel better by the time you get there. I could see myself choosing a city rather than a town, but then again I’d miss all the wonder along the way.

祖先教誨,學習順應自然時序,融入萬物的平衡之中。 My South Link journey into the unknown introduced me to the legendary holy bird Si-Jiang, which had been raised by dozens of tribal elders. The bird was a sign of a dying culture, and looking into its eyes revealed both the past and future. I followed the steps of a hunter, Lan Bo, having respect for the land, crawling forward through fields, and bearing ancient lessons in mind. I learnt to adapt to nature and its balance.

Using the scattered concrete and steel debris left in a betel nut plantation by Typhoon Nepartak, the Luxury Logico art group built an installation in the shape of mountains. The work, Rebirth, symbolises the debt that humans owe to nature. You could examine the hundred shades of blue here or you could look out at the ocean and contemplate things, in awe of this world’s mysterious vitality. Living and making art in the foehn-like wind was like rowing boats on land, but it was just this demanding environment that showed the artists the true quality of nature and the science and wisdom of the land’s original inhabitants, pushing them to put more sweat, blood, and tears into their work.

Drifting off to the other side of the mountains, where Negritos are said to have once lived, you can find the mock remains made by Sih-Chin Wu. His augmented reality app “broadcasts” the life of these short-statured, dark-skinned people, allowing visitors to “see” them and “listen” to them telling their stories and about how they interacted with other indigenous tribes; in the process, it leaves much space for visitors’ imaginations. After visiting Anshuo Village in Da’ren Township, Po-Chih Huang collaborated with the head of the Katjadrepan family to create the work Dream Inspired Millet Wine. In it, they interpret dreams through various mediums including photography and writing, bringing these dreams into existence.

There’s no word for “art” or “artworks” in the dictionaries of many indigenous languages; art was such an intrinsic part of life for these people that it was unnecessary to define or categorise it. The Hidden South applies the same logic: It was not only an art project but a way to learn and to live, to explore the relationship between humans and nature, to learn and memorise things with our own bodies, and to practice this philosophy of the land. Even though you weren’t at the event, Tsan-Cheng Wu’s audio map is the next best thing. For it, Wu recorded sounds at more than

Taitung is a place you need to take your time to experience. You don’t need to bring back a souvenir but rather a thought, a skill, a friend, or a memory – try to understand different lifestyles and cultures, to broaden your horizon. Just writing this reminds me of the train moving slowly along the southeast coast along with the scenery outside the window, the light and shadows, the improvised music and dance of Shih-Yang Lee, and all the other fantastic performances. But even when reflecting on the past, I feel like my adventure in Taitung has only just begun.

在回想,覺得很美好。

My mother and I love to travel and have more experience than our father. But when I came to San Francisco, my father seemed to feel that he had to shoulder the responsibility of the tour guide. He did his best to meet the landlord’s friendship. In addition to pointing to some famous sightseeing spots, he took me to a location. The remote Vietnamese restaurant tasted his unforgettable river meal soup. I imagine that my father has been searching for the shuttle in the streets of the city for the past few years. For him who only loves his home at home, the annual San Francisco business trip is probably a rare single adventure. 2014 This family trip will still be a bit noisy, but at that time, with the spring blossoms and the sunshine, I took a lot of smiles from my parents in the golden sunshine of San Francisco. Now I think, I feel very good.

那天租了單車,和父親一起騎越過金門大橋。雖然他 沒說出口,但看著照片總覺得那天父親應該很開心。 相信自己愛過、相信自己快樂過,可能就是我為什麼 拍照。 My father and I rented bikes and rode them over the

Golden Gate. Looking at the photos from the day, I believe that – though he didn’t say anything at the time – he was very happy. I think take photos because they help me believe that I have loved someone and been happy.

telescopes and binoculars often suggest something worthy of meticulous observation. However, in many scenic spots, telescopes are only a token amusement. After visitors insert coins in them, they often find no subjects worth focusing on and leave uncertain of the device’s purpose.

父親知道我拍他,都會安安靜靜讓我拍完。不問為什 麼拍,也從不追問照片成果。有時候我覺得有過這些 時 刻 就 很 好 了, 照 片 最 後 怎 麼 樣 也 無 妨。When Dad

would notice me taking photos of him, he’d stay in the same place and allow me to finish, never asking why or to see the results. Sometimes I considered these moments themselves great enough that I didn’t even check my shots. 9.

在街上看到了一些西裝筆挺的兔子,還有全身光溜溜 的 老 傢 伙。On Easter Weekend I visited Castro Street, the heart of the city’s LGBT district, and saw bunnies in suits as well as a naked older gentleman.

14. 一家三口在九曲花巷的林蔭裡散步。Roaming in the shade of Lombard Street with my family. 15. 從飛機上俯瞰的雲中小拱橋,到在碼頭旁看了會驚嘆的金門大橋,終於落實了,說了好幾年的美西家族旅行。I saw a little arch bridge from the plane and the amazing Golden Gate Bridge from the dock. It was a satisfying reminder that our family trip to the West Coast had finally been realised after so many years.
