Artist Chan-Cheng Cho has been exploring and mastering the art of mosaics for years. The materials used in the craft are imported, making them more expensive and thus lowering people’s willingness to work with them. In this exhibition, Cho uses mosaic art and sculptural techniques to create multimedia artworks, opening up a new means of expression for mosaics.

This family of carpenters, originating in Anping in the southern city of Tainan, has been applying its exquisite craftsmanship since 1958. Generation after generation, family members have turned wood into long-lasting works of art. Chiang’s series of works exhibited here presents milestones of personal growth and illustrates how to escape from a toxic interpersonal relationship. Travellers read works painted by a hundred travellers, all with their own perspectives. As Freespace is the theme of the 2018 Venice Biennale of Architecture, Taiwan Pavilion curator Chun-Hsiung Wang has collaborated with Yilan studio Fieldoffice Architects to present Living with the Sky, Water & Mountain: Making a Place in Yilan. They will explore the connections of architecture, human beings, environment, and local culture with the concepts of time, land, and the structure of the canopy. The Swiss Pavilion, Svizzera 240: House Tour, offers a special form of architectural representation consisting of spaces with different scales but the same design, like white walls, door knobs, and power sockets, subverting how you think about daily life and housing.

For many travellers, Taitung means only Taitung City. That’s why The Hidden South recruited 20 artists to guide visitors through the county’s southern area, exploring the four towns of Daren, Dawu, Jinfong, and Taimali along the way. During and after the journey, these creators from Taiwan, Italy, France, the Philippines, and Thailand made artworks deeply connected to local society along the magnificent Provincial Highway No. 9. The works explore wind, driftwood, murals, bamboo, tribal antidotes, and millet wine. This is the first time Taitung has presented an art project of such a large scale.

As the crossroads of Western civilisation, Palermo, the capital of Sicily, boasts diverse ethnicities and cultures. At the beginning of 2018, Palermo was nominated as Italy’s cultural capital and chosen to host the well-known European art biennale, Manifesta. This year’s biennale focuses on the worldview of French philosopher and garden designer Gilles Clement, who considers humans the gardeners of the world. The event explores immigration, climate change, cultural heritage, and the current state of European through art, and thereby also depicts the future of this city.

From illustrations for newspapers, book covers, and community murals all the way to lantern festival designs, illustrator Nic Hsu seems comfortable in every medium. He depicts urban characters with warm colours, sophisticated emotions, and rich detail. On the cover of VOYAGER this issue, he presents the breath-taking scenes and oceanic flavours of Penghu, getting you in the mood for a summer retreat (as if you weren’t already).

“Once you start a journey, there’re always scenes to discover.” With an entrenched love for the summertime, Hsu is deeply familiar with islands and the ocean. From a wider perspective, Penghu can be depicted through the luggage of a traveller on an airport runway. The image appeared to Hsu when he left Taiwan after summer vacation to study in Britain last year. “It’s a way to express how I feel about leaving home and summer.” If you look closely, you can see that the sea level in the luggage is actually connected to the horizon of the airport – a clue left by the artist.

his parents discovered his gift early on. He was sent to drawing class at the age of 6 but quickly got tired of following the teachers’ directions. After graduating with an information management degree, he was recommended in 2012 by colleagues from his first job to create a now famous figure. After this experience, he was determined to pick up the paint brush and find his personal passion again. Believing that “painting is the universal language to convey emotion in the world”, he quit his job to study abroad.

In Britain, his creative self was challenged at the Royal Academy of Arts, driving him to forge a new identity as
an artist. “After coming to the RCA, I put aside the digital tools that I was accustomed with and learned mixed media with watercolours, acrylics, scrapbooking, and ink.” This learning experience is borne out on this edition’s cover: charcoal, acrylics, scrapbooking, and digital tools were all combined to embody the various beautiful elements of Penghu.

His current creative output is much more diverse in both style and content, with topics such as an evil landlord, a healing trip along the coast of Portugal, a visit to Scandinavian at the behest of professors, and an upcoming graduation project, Place Lag. The latter is about the spatial displacement we sometimes experience during travel and movement when our mind space doesn’t change as fast as our transportation moves. It’s inspired by Skyfaring: A Journey with a Pilot, which was published in 2015. “I had this experience back in 2013 when I visited Iceland. After enjoying hot springs in Blue Lagoon in the afternoon, I was back on the crowded tube in London later that same evening. I felt disoriented to be suddenly extracted from a fantasy world back to reality.”

During his trips, Hsu often stays offline in order to feel the local environment and capture ephemeral ideas as clearly as possible. While struggling at school last year before Christmas, he went to snowy Scandinavia, as suggested by his professors. The inspiration of that trip was transformed into a little book, Nordic Happiness, which won him as the New Talanet Winner of Books Category of the 2018 World Illustration Awards. It will be exhibited at Somerset House in London.

Cold Sea, Deep Passion is a collection of 12 pieces of prose. Written by Tao poet Syaman Rapongan in response to his journalist friends’ requests, it was published in 1997, with the second edition released in 2010. His words are simple and concise but full of Tao wisdom, such as “When facing the ocean you are always a ‘freshman’, and you should always worship the ancestral spirits” and “The canoes are the grandchildren of the ocean; the flying fish can fly but they do not fly to your house on the land.”

The difference is that Syaman Rapongan writes about family members, spear guns, and the loss and inheritance of culture while Hongji Liao writes about dolphins and whales. Introducing his essay collection, Liao says: “This book was written to repay a debt, but it’s also a magical book.”

This enigmatic statement traces its origins back to the early summer of 1996, when Liao was trying – unsuccessfully – to raise funds for the “Ecological Study Project of Cetacea in the Coastal Waters of Hualian”. His research vessel was finally able to be put to sea before the warm summer was over after Liao, who had published a book titled Tao Hai Ren, was prepaid royalties from his publisher by promising to write a book about whales. Afterwards, he used the results from his 30 marine research voyages to write Jing Sheng Jing Shi. The book sold surprisingly well, allowing Liao to pay off his debt and raising many people’s ocean awareness.

The book's main theme is about how the eight species of cetaceans – bottlenose dolphins and killer whales among them – interact with seafarers. The book’s vivid prose is interspersed with pictures of the blue sea and jumping cetaceans. The images, which were carefully picked from around 1,000 photographs, are simple and elegant.

Tar-zen Su is not only the founder of the Jonathan Su Foundation, he’s widely known as a marine activity advocate and professor who’s always wearing sandals. Before retiring from National Taiwan Ocean University in 2009, he canoed around the island with a group of students. He also facilitated the production of Taiwan’s first maritime documentary, Ocean Dream. The 2015 film aims to highlight the beauty and challenges of Taiwan’s ocean resources.

Due to various considerations, the project evolved into a documentary. “The cinematographer followed us all day long, and we didn’t know what the final work would look like. Dream Ocean records how Su selected 16 young people from among 100 in 2014. After training for three months, they bravely started canoeing from Hualien in Taiwan, aiming for Yonaguni in Japan. Although its box office take was not impressive compared with the blockbusters out at the time, the documentary has turned out to be quite influential over time. Su, clearly gratified, said he had been told by friends and family members about how they were moved by the film, and that many college departments had selected it as a teaching material.

As the film shows, delays forced by regulations resulted in the journey be terminated after missing the southern wind. Several participants burst into tears of frustration after finding out, but they also pledged that they would complete the trip one day. In 2017, Su called back five of the original members, as well as nine senior sailors trained by the foundation, to travel across the ocean in homemade bamboo rafts to Yonaguni.

His aim is to convince the public that canoeing is an activity for everyone – not just youngsters. “While many people here in Taiwan are ignorant about and terrified by the ocean, those in Hawaii are encouraged to enjoy it,” Su said. He believes that stereotypes about the ocean can only be overturned with proper knowledge and personal experience. Perfect islands, such as Penghu, are endowed with crystal-clear water and fine beaches. However, waste production around the world increases along with global population. Beaches and bays in the north on Penghu are polluted by trashes and garbage coming with wind and currents. Over the past three years, Xiaosan Tang starts to transform marine wastes in artworks and take speech occasions on campus, in order to increase public awareness on this issue.

As we arrive in Penghu, Xiaosan Tang immediately invites us to hop on her scooter. Within five minutes, we witness marine waste piled up on the shore, including glass bottles, floats, ropes, and plastic bottles. It's the side of Penghu you rarely see in vacationers’ holiday snapshots.

A bathroom in her studio is decorated with a mosaic floor. If you look closely, you see it’s actually composed of bottle caps. Mirrors and other bottles are also common items that wash ashore. "People usually don’t realise how serious the problem is until it's right in front of them."
After starting to pick up the garbage, she decided to try to highlight the issue in a creative way so as to increase awareness among different groups. She cleans, categorises, and assembles waste into artworks. "I want to

Tang has experimented with different ways to minimise waste, inform the public, and encourage other artists to reflect on and use marine waste as a medium. When tourists visit her O2 Lab, she invites them to collect waste from the shore and create their own artworks, as one little step to recycle and reuse all the garbage on Penghu’s coastline.

Although Wu’s favourable comments about Penghu may be true, a lack of organization and consolidation means the island chain’s extraordinary essence is somewhat scattered geographically and structurally. Wu describes himself as rebellious. To him, the purpose of design is to solve problems. While fulfilling his national service in Penghu, he visited many souvenir shops near top tourist attractions and found a damning lack of creativity in the wares on offer. He then decided to present Penghu in vector graphics. After seeing the complex bus system in Penghu, Wu drew a bus route map using his expertise in information management and visual design. After finding out how difficult it was to check local tide times, he established the Kuibishan Tide Search System. None of these cases were commissioned – he was merely solving problems by his own means.

Despite being surrounded by the ocean, not all Penghu residents have always been familiar with it. Marine activities were prohibited in many families, the children of which didn't learn to swim. Times are different now. Ai Hai is eagerly teaching local students about water activities. And, on a related, positive note: human-powered kayaking does not create pollution.

As you walk through the arch into the elevator, soft light comes through the glass to memorise the war history of it. Located on the second floor of the hotel, Chenchen is the restaurant where offers buffet during breakfast, and à la carte as well as set menu for lunch and dinner. The name“Chenchen” originates from the Chinese word chéng, meaning clear and clean. It symbolises seawater and, more importantly, seafood. The chef ’s recommendations for the season include several classic Penghu dishes such as dry-fried giant grouper, neritic squids with Thai sauce, fried cabbage with peanuts, and fish ball soup with seaweed. Roast duck and Cantonese-style barbecue are also quite popular amongst guests. Ding, the manager, explains that the best way to taste a locally farmed giant grouper is to dry-fry it. The seasonal neritic squids are flash-frozen to keep the flavour fresh, making it a great choice for its delicate taste. Local peanuts are used in fried cabbage with peanuts, which are big with a creamy taste. Combining two local specialties, fish ball soup with seaweed can be seen as the most representative local dish.

In Luc Besson’s The Big Blue, freediver Jacques Mayol drifts in the ocean. Yorko was deeply affected by the film, and afterwards would answer the ocean’s call whenever he could, whether by scuba diving or snorkelling. In 2002, he moved to Palau for five years to dive and photograph, earning a living as a diving tour guide. He won first prize in an underwater photography contest in Palau in 2005.

“The world is huge. I wanted to explore other places,” Yorko says. After leaving Palau, he went diving in locations across the world as a professional underwater photographer, including in Fiji, Tonga, Saipan, the Galapagos Islands, the Bahamas, and the Maldives. As he excitedly introduced his portfolio, he mentions littleknown islands and exotic ocean creatures alongside their respective images, as if he’d just come back yesterday. “My memories grow with my photography experiences, so I always remember the emotions and context of my works.”

He remains deeply connected to Green Island after naming as the Ocean Tourism Ambassador of Green Island. “It’s a fascinating diving destination with crystal clear water and colourful soft corals.” He communicates with ocean creatures through the lens, extending his output from stills to video. He also captures figures underwater, showing fabric waving like a fish tail. “Humans don’t have wings, but I can fly in the ocean,” says Yorko, who adds that he feels more comfortable in water, like a fish embracing its natural habitat.

Equipment is a major investment, for example. He admits to making several mistakes initially in his career. Now with partners like Canon and Sony, however, the path is much smoother. To protect advanced cameras, Yorko needs waterproof housings. Along with light sources, float arms, and other gadgets, assembling his gear for a shoot takes at least an hour.

Besides photography tools, Yorko also needs to bring clothes, accessories, laptops, and hard drives with him on shoots. On an average trip, he brings four pieces of luggage with a total weight of nearly 100 kilograms. “It’s all necessary if you want to work in the beautiful ocean.”

Yorko has swum with a 15-metre sperm whales and taken close-up shots in a cage with great whites. He is adventurous and curious about nature – but always respectful. “I never take it lightly.” Unlike conventional photography, shooting underwater comes with the additional difficulties of changing currents and curious creates, making it more stressful but also more special.

“We only have one ocean, so we need to protect it the best we can.” While everyone who sees his footage from
the Seychelles is amazed by the colourful fish, he’s more concerned about the coral bleaching in the background. Global warming melts polar icecaps and heats up the ocean, which bleaches the coral. “Even if we cannot stop the devastation, we have to slow it down as much as possible.”

Fine selections from Singleton's three main distilleries - ( Glendullan, Dufftown and Glen Ord ) were all present so that guests can get to taste the different spirits at the banquet. This thoughtful and caring arrangement allowed the guest to interpret the flavors and characteristics of the three different distilleries for themselves, in addition, it also provided guests with the opportunity to experience and savor the flavors of vintage whiskies. Classic elements were used to create the atmosphere of the venue, while the pairing of the dishes made use of ingredients and preparation methods that allowed for the flavor of the liquor to be extended into different levels. From the shimmering reflection on the surface of the amber liquid, it was as if one could see the elation of the soul.

The Ryukyu Islands are unexpectedly close to Taiwan. Just an hour or so by air will take you there – quicker than departing from Tokyo. At the southernmost point of Japan

Stepping off the plane, I was immediately welcomed by a gentle sea breeze; the salty moist air reminded me “This is Okinawa!” Inside the rental car, the driver, dressed in a Hawaiian shirt, turned on the radio. A songstress backed by a shamisen sang to me as I gazed out the window at the endless coastline and its scattered houses. For a moment I thought I was on Taiwan’s east coast highway, leaving me with a mixed impression of the familiar and the foreign.

要吃沖繩的飯糰呢？」她親切地問道，看到我正在猶
豫，她又補了一句：「沖繩人早上都吃這種飯糰喔！」
這句話倒引起了我的好奇心，仔細看了一下飯糰內容， 是將方形的海苔包覆厚切午餐肉、厚蛋燒與粒粒分明 的米飯，不過度裝飾的樸實外表有種台式早點的豪邁 與親切感，讓人迫不及待大口咬下，讓熱騰騰的米飯 與食材在嘴裡融化成難以形容的幸福滋味。

禮。來到這裡，絕對不會空手而歸。With plenty of traditional ingredients and classic souvenirs to choose from, you won’t leave the market empty-handed.
Japan doesn’t have breakfast stores like Taiwan does, and my first breakfast in Okinawa was a Japanese and continental buffet offered by the hotel. I wasn’t particularly interested in it until a local mother and her onigiri met my eyes. “Want to try Okinawan onigiri? All locals have it for breakfast.” A curious glance at the rice ball – a thick slice of luncheon meat and tamagoyaki (rolled omelette) sandwiched between fine grains of rice that is then wrapped with a sheet of crispy seaweed – and I immediately fell for it. With each bite, my stomach and my heart were filled up by the comforting taste of home cooking.

Having heard of the Makishi Public Market’s reputation as the “kitchen of Naha”, I expected it to be one of those lively traditional food markets, so I was surprised to have found a second-hand bookshop, Urara. I approached the owner, Miss Tomoko Uda, full of curiosity: What made her pick such a location for a second-hand bookshop?

The best part of the bookshop, according to Miss Uda, is that it attracts people to stop by and take home a book when they wouldn’t have otherwise, whether it’s a homemaker looking for recipe inspiration or a passerby who is drawn into the world of Okinawan festivals.

「tituti」，我直覺這是會是個與理想物品相遇的場景，
該選擇哪一款道屯織布袋的時刻，店員靈敏地拿出更
細膩的風格，是 tituti 給人的第一印象。與店員閒聊
為它更接近藝廊與生活道具店之間的 lifestyle shop，
大片落地窗搭配純白的視覺設計，簡約中又帶有溫柔 後才得知，這是一家由四位女性創作者共同開設的選
物店，分別是陶藝家金城有美子、紅型作家田中紀子、 道屯織作家長池朋子與木工作家西石垣友理子，結識 超過 10 年四位創作者透過自己的巧手，承襲古老的琉 球工藝技術，將其化為雅俗共賞、貼近生活的日常用 品。
Every journey comes with the purchase of a few keepsakes, but as I’ve grown older, I’ve stopped actively looking for these. Instead, I’ve learned to anticipate the moment when a beautiful object meets my eyes. Tituti is the kind of place where that moment is most likely to happen for everyone. With a simple white-cube design and huge display windows, the shop was opened by four female artists: Yumiko Kaneshiro, a potter; Noriko Tanaka a bingata artist; Tomoko Nagaike, a Roton-ori weaver; and Yuriko Nishi Ishigaki, a carpenter. The long-time friends are not only keeping traditional Okinawan craftsmanship alive but are turning conventionally delicate artworks into everyday objects.

As a lover of shops with curated offerings, the shopping experience at tituti was, to me, like visiting an exhibition. Whereas shop owners often use interior design to reflect their own views and taste to excess, tituti firmly holds onto the belief that less is more. Objects are placed on allwhite plinths with appropriate distances from each other, emphasizing their individual value while echoing with one another, such as a pottery mug of pastel yellow and an adjacent wooden butter knife. Tituti offers the lifestyle represented by these Ryukyu crafts.

Thanks to its geographic location and historical background, Okinawa has developed a unique island culture distinct from that of mainland Japan. Though my stay was short, I left with a deep impression from their food, crafts, and books. to pray for a good harvest, good health, and prosperity. The event starts with a festival march of 400 locals carrying a gigantic rope that is 90 metre long and 5 tons heavy. The act is believed to bring good luck to all the participants.
