歲末年終的機場，有相聚出遊的歡笑聲，也有獨

自奔波無法過節的憂愁；一直以來，昇恆昌總是盡力

本期以「一同分享的那些時光」為題，搜羅俄羅

斯、土耳其、泰國、以色列、墨西哥節慶特色，讓各

國的風土人情豐富旅人們的視野。名人單元邀請日本作家青木由香以自身故事述說日本新年情懷；世界旅行後回歸臺灣的作家褚士瑩，以原民祭典「西拉雅夜祭」作為人與土地對「節慶」與「分享」最亙古不變的感謝。

The end of the year brings the laughter of reunions, anticipation of journeys, and anxiety of being away from

family while waiting in the airports. Ever Rich is particularly aware of the last point, and has long sought to bring the holiday spirit to airports and thus travellers – it’s just

In this issue, we focus on the moments shared together by people around the world. We take an up-close look at festivals in Russia, Turkey, Thailand, Israel, and Mexico. We

also invited renowned writer Aoki Yuka to recall childhood

memories of new year celebrations in Japan, while fellow writer Shiying Chu tells of returning to Taiwan and attending an aboriginal festival: the Siraya Night Sacrifice.

Design is based on lifestyle. We make observation of details in our lives, and thus the things we talk about and how we get along with others are both inspirations. Take keys for example. They’re easy to lose track of around the house. But by using traditional Taiwanese craftsmanship to bind together various shades of wood into a base, a keyholder can be created that is not just practical but whose warmth can extend into our lives.

Taiwanese artist Shyh-Jen Ni uses rabbits for more than cuteness’ sake. In her mixedmedia works, the animals are a metaphor for society’s purest minds and souls. Drawing on her multicultural background of living in Japan and studying in the U.S., Ni primarily uses sculpture as she seeks to foster power and faith in her audience – especially when in tough situations. By displaying Ni’s works, the Ever Rich Foundation hopes travellers can learn more about themselves and their own values. And whatever you find, Ni says, you shouldn’t look down on yourself: “Each of us is unique and precious.”

Extraction and Beyond: Chao-Long Ni Solo Exhibition 視藝術創作為終身職志的倪朝龍曾說：「繪畫是一條永無止境的道路，走上繪畫之路，我無怨無悔；追求藝術之美，從一而終。」兼善「版畫」與「油畫」

創作的倪朝龍，早期的木刻版畫風格刀法粗獷、凌厲，後深入探討水印版畫細膩雅淨的特質，成就其獨具文人水墨韻致的木刻水印版畫風格。「油畫」則以

個人情感為出發點，用自己遊歷大千世界時刻記憶，堅持用自己的繪畫語言表達出來，作品相當具有強烈的現代性，形式風格獨樹一幟。

Artist Chao-Long Ni once said, “Painting is an endless journey. Walking on it, I have no regret. My pursuit of art and aesthetics remains the same as it did at the very beginning.” Ni excels in both printmaking and oil painting. He applied wild and sharp strokes in his early woodcuts. He later turned to water-based printmaking, the fineness and neatness of which enabled him to achieve his own unique, thoughtful ink wash woodcut style. As for his oil paintings, they’re based on his feelings and memories of having roamed the world and seen its diversity. With his own painting language and style, he depicts the world with strong modernity.

韓國藝術家 Lee Bul 首次個展：Crush

South Korean Artist Lee Bul’s First Solo Exhibition: Crush 韓國重要當代藝術家 Lee Bul，巡迴個展 Crush 自倫敦來到柏林 Gropius Bau，

首次在德國登場。Lee Bul 創作至今已超過 30 年，親眼見證韓國的民主化進程，她以時代的轉變為創作養分，玩轉珍珠、水晶、皮革、天鵝絨等特殊材質，透過

裝置藝術與表演語彙，探討夢想、理想與烏托邦。情感強烈且挑釁意味十足的作品，隱含著她對韓國歷史與政治的體悟，並將全球化與科技發展之下，人類追尋完美樣貌與潛藏失敗，展露無遺。

德國柏林葛羅比烏斯博物館 Gropius Bau, Berlin

Lee Bul is one of South Korea’s most important contemporary artists. Throughout her now 30-year career, Lee has been a witness to the country’s evolution, and her works are nurtured by the changing of eras. Her extensive stage sets and performances both experiment with unusual materials, such as mother-of-pearl, crystals, leather, and velvet, and explore dreams, ideals, and utopia. Her works are provocative, particularly in their implications for South Korean history and politics, exploring human beings’ pursuit of perfection and potential failure under the weight of globalisation and technological advancement.

逆旅之域

The Flying Land 科技縮短了移動的時間和距離，但尋找心靈歸屬和自我認同卻從不停止，遷徙、

移居、旅行、漂泊，你我都可能曾是異鄉人。《逆旅之域》為當代城市永無止歇

的轉型再生與延續，更是各種公私場域定義的流動移轉，往來在歷史記憶與未來願景之間，訴說著人類注定無法停歇的移動與漂泊，能從來自 6 個國家 8 組藝術家之創作裡，看見不同時空下的難民、災民、移民和移工。

Technology has shortened the travelling time between countries and the distance, but our pursuit of a sense of belonging and self-recognition has continued growing, with our migration, travel, and wandering sometimes making us feel like outlanders. The Flying Land speaks of the endless transformation, rebirth, and continuity of the life of modern cities. It explores the shifting ground between public and private places, telling the stories of humankind’s doomed, continual roaming in the past and the future as well as in reality and fantasy.

相聚是旅行的核心

New Encounters Define Travel

「相聚是旅行的核心」黃湘說，因為旅行對她

而言，總是環繞在相遇和陪伴，可能在旅途中遇見新旅伴，也可能是和同伴一起去旅行；即使是一個人的旅行，都是一種跟自己相聚、重新認識自己的機會，尤其是抵達目的地前的期待感，是她最喜歡

的地方，「期待的動力，會讓整個人處於發光的狀態」她說，而期待感發生於路程之中，無論是出國，或在國內旅行，那份共同醞釀期待的緊密，便成為封面故事的元素。

“Meeting is at the core of travelling,” Huang says. Travel is about encounters and company, with every trip an opportunity to rediscover yourself, she says. Huang especially revels in the anticipation you experience before arriving at your destination, and she has integrated this excitement, expectations, and cultural exchange into the cover art.

於是在畫面中可以看見，一同從地圖尋找旅行路

線的兩個人；一起前往目的地的兩個人，一人會關心後頭的同伴有沒有跟上；在飛機上看著窗外的風景，

Everyone has dream destinations of their own. Instead of depicting popular locations, Huang focuses on the weather and landscape experienced on the journey there. She believes such common factors like mountains, the ocean, trees, and rain can trigger their own travel memories. Huang especially cherishes these moments when shared with companions.

看圖，要能夠說故事

「妳會如何描述自己的插畫風格呢？」被詢問到

時，「很難解釋耶。」黃湘先給了這個回答，但侃侃而談的言語接續下來：「偏向舒適的，不會讓人感到壓迫，顏色偏多，人物、造型，都會比較圓潤。」便將風格勾勒成型。

「慢熟（MindSlow Workroom）」是黃湘的工作

室品牌，也呼應了風格：慢而悠然，熟而入味。這個過程也是慢慢轉化而來，以前的黃湘習慣用重色彩，工作室牆面掛著的圖畫，多是鮮艷顏色。但心態逐漸

轉變，覺得柔和的顏色雖不在第一秒搶眼，但卻是能久伴身旁的耐看。以前排斥柔弱的色彩，例如淺粉紅

身旁乘客的臉龐，倒映在機窗，成為自己眼中的風景，而窗裡的自己，也是身旁乘客眼中的風景；旅行不只前進，也有駐留，相機慢下旅客的腳步，把轉瞬的深刻，化為能夠分享的永恆記憶。

The work shows two people studying a map, walking to sites, and sharing the window-seat view. They also see each other in the process and use cameras to turn these ephemeral moments into lasting memories.

到哪兒旅行，永遠是個課題，每個人心目中都

有夢想的目的地，因此她不以名勝古蹟作為主題；但前往目的地的路途，總會經歷地景與天氣，輕柔的色

彩，也繪出這些旅行中常見的自然：山、海、樹、雨。旅行是廣闊的，黃湘希望透過不特定、但能共同感受的元素，與旅人分享那份令人興奮愉悅的期待感，同

時傳達旅行中那些她認為的美好：「一同前往目的地前，那些相聚的時光。」

背起行囊，走向某個地方的途中，是她認為最迷人的地方。Packed and

leaving for somewhere unknown are the most fascinating part of the journey.

Cover Artist 色，現在就體會到，柔弱或陽剛，無論是哪一種能量，都有存在的價值。既定印象，會讓自己錯過許多變得開闊多元的機會。

Huang describes her illustration style as “comfortable and rounded, including colours and figures”. Therefore, she named her studio MindSlow Workroom, acknowledging that everything takes time to mature and develop. She previously used bright and strong colours nearly exclusively, as shown by the works on her studio’s walls. Huang now recognizes, however, that softer colours have power, too. Refusing to challenge such existing notions will prevent your work from growing, she says.

除了電腦繪圖外，她也嘗試壁畫，呈現不同的創作形式。Apart from

working with computer, she also tried wall paint before showcasing different forms of creation.

一趟旅行起碼要提前半年規劃、笑容和語速同樣

溫婉和緩的黃湘，在繪畫中會特別堅持的事，就是「看圖，要能夠說故事」，無法接受被詢問「為何要畫這幅作品」時只能回答「好看」。為企業繪製品牌形象時，一定會請業主提供故事脈絡與核心價值。作品雖

是圖像，但背後的文字與意義，早已在心中百般琢磨。 Huang says she typically plans her trips at least six months in advance – and always with a sunny disposition. She takes a similar approach when working with clients, during which she insists that every picture be able to tell a story rather

than just be “pretty”. When designing brand identities, for example, she always asks for the company’s core values and history, so every image she delivers can carry its own meaning and narrative.

畫畫的路，起點跟外公一起走 It Started With Grandpa

會喜歡畫畫，是因為外公，畫畫的起點，也是外

公。黃湘的外公是船員，住在旗津，她與外公度過許多難忘的童年時光。那些時光大多是安靜的，外公會抱著

幼小的黃湘站在掀蓋洗衣機上看著旋轉的泡泡；會帶黃

湘去搭旗津渡輪，這一頭到那一頭，那一頭回這一頭，總要 5、6 趟，黃湘滿意了才下船回家。

Huang traces her passion for art back to her sailor grandfather. They spent a lot of time together during her childhood, watching bubbles spinning in washing machine or taking ferries back and forth across the ocean.

她也常跟外公一起畫畫，筆身灰而圓胖、色彩有

藍有紅的那種彩色筆，就是黃湘的玩具，外公總會喚

她：「去拿大箍筆來。」祖孫倆安安靜靜地一起畫圖，大船、海馬、小魚，在圖紙上歡騰活潑地呈現。沒有

She drew a lot of pictures with her grandpa as well. It was a happy time, with no thought given to composition, layout, or structure. After noticing Huang’s ability, her mother enrolled her in drawing classes.

從設計科系畢業後，先在品牌設計公司工作，最

令黃湘印象深刻的一幕是，藝術家總是帶著自己的驕傲

作品，來讓公司挑選，跟設計師討論如何運用在商品上，讓深愛創作的她覺得，自己應該在藝術家的位置上，而不是套用別人作品的位置。因此，毅然決然將自己的熱情投注在繪畫上，是她不後悔的決定。

Huang started her career in a brand design studio, where she came to admire how artists would bring in works and let the company and designers discuss which ones to use and how. Now as an artist herself, she’s never regretted the career path she chose.

作品也於台北插畫藝術節參展，逐漸的採收著豐收的果實。這一路來，她不疾不徐的讓風格跟著生命一起成長，經驗成了畫作裡的分享。

In addition to working with a wide variety of clients a n d m e d i u m s s u c h a s w e d d i n g c a ke s , c a t e r i n g , accommodation, real estate, and art festivals, Huang also held a solo exhibition this year and has exhibited at the Taipei Illustration Fair. She is continuing to take it slow, growing with each life experience and telling stories through her works.

著有超過 50 本作品，他是一個從小就喜歡到世界盡頭去旅行的國際非營利組織工作者，畢業於埃及 AUC 大學新聞系和哈佛大學甘迺迪政府學院。足跡遍佈全世界， 2015 年，他有感於緬甸衝突地區的和平工作的極限，曾到英國和法國學習，希望可以進一步用哲學思考來面對世界上各種戰爭、貧窮、難民、移工、歧視等複雜的問題。 A Graduate from American University in Cairo and Harvard University, Shiying Chu currently works in international non-profit organizations. He has published over 50 books and travelled in many countries. After recognising the limitations of peace efforts in Myanmar in 2015, he visited Britain and France to study issues such as warfare, poverty, refugees, migrants, and discrimination from a philosophical perspective

個對大多數台灣人也都非常陌生的西拉雅族祭典。今年的農曆 9 月 5 日，我和一群親朋好友如往年般，準

時在深夜出現在吉貝耍部落的大公廨前。就像許多原住民部落，西拉雅族也開枝散葉形成不同的「社」，「吉貝耍（kabuasua）」這個社在西拉雅語中是「木棉花」的意思。

In recent years, I’ve return to Tainan each autumn for night rites and ocean rites, no matter where I am in the world. These two Siraya tribal rituals are unfamiliar to most people, even those of Taiwan. In mid-October this year, I arrived at the Kabuasua community with family and friends at night, as usual. In the Siraya language, Kabuasua means “kapok flower”.

是，在場幾乎每個人都對著同一位九十多歲的老太太叫「嬸婆」。他們很多是回來向「阿立祖」還願的，

準備了全豬，一頭頭整整齊齊攤放在預先準備好的竹床上。「阿立祖」是西拉雅族的祖靈信仰，「阿立（alid）」就是西拉雅語裡「祖先」的意思。

Unlike most aboriginal rites in Taiwan, few tourists attended this late night religious ceremony , even though it was open to public. Most participants were Siraya members, and they all called a lady over 90 years old “grandaunt”. Many people placed a pig on a bamboo bed to express their gratitude to “alid”, or ancestor in Siraya language.

這幾年來因為 NGO 工作的關係，透過「西拉雅

國家風景區管理處」的幫助，我慢慢接觸西拉雅文化，也才因此知道西拉雅傳統對於我摯愛的台灣，有如此深遠的影響。比如台灣傳統所謂的拜「地基

主」，其實就是漢人祭拜原來居住在當地西拉雅人的祖靈，就連現在常用的台語，從「虱目魚」到長腳蜘

蛛「旯犽」，也都翻譯自西拉雅語。台灣人吃的醃製食品，從破布子到醬筍，都是道地的西拉雅食物。

Common home worship in Taiwan now actually involves worshipping Siraya ancestral spirits. Several phrases in Taiwanese are derived from the Siraya language, for example, milkfish and Huntsman spider, and some common Taiwanese preserved foods such as Birdlime tree and bamboo shoot also came from the Siraya.

我想他們知道自己目睹的，是一個曾經淪為隱晦的台灣，隨著許多文史工作者的努力，慢慢重新被看見，而這只是一個開始。

Outsiders attending the rite that night were mostly anthropologists, foreign scholars, or professional photographers. They seemed to know each other well and understood that the ritual was gradually being brought back to life by cultural workers after many years on the brink of oblivion.

夜祭有 8 個步驟。子時一到，祭儀準時開始。從

「獻豬」開始，豬是夜祭活動中重要的祭品，再來是

由尪姨（Inibs）獻豬飼酒「請神降臨」；第 3 部是「謝

願還願，過火清靜」，詢問獻豬還願者，為何還願，

然後向阿立母（吉貝耍部落對阿立祖的獨特稱呼）報告，並點燃稻草桿拍打豬隻驅邪貢獻給祂；再來「行覆布禮」，在豬隻身上蓋上大白布，是為了告訴其他

鬼魂，這是獻給阿立母的祭品，別動歪腦筋，同時也比較衛生，避免蚊蠅污染豬隻。

The night rite comprised eight steps and began around midnight with a pig sacrifice followed by the arrival of a god. Community members presented their pigs and whipped them with straws set on fire as a tribute. Afterwards, they covered the pigs with white cloth to stop other spirits from taking them away. This also offered protection from mosquitoes and flies.

接著是「敬酒祭拜」，跪拜於豬隻前，向祖靈敬

酒，反覆 5 次後，由族裡的女性穿著傳統白衣，頭戴

花環，牽手圍成圓圈，以特定舞步、用族語吟唱古調，是為「牽曲祝賀」。下一步的「擲茭請示」尪姨會用

They cut a betel nut in two and dropped both halves onto the ground. When they landed with one side up and one side down, it indicated the ancestors were satisfied with the rite. The pig heads and tails were left on the site until the next day to complete the ritual.

After the ritual finished around 3:30 in the morning, we returned to our hotel and enjoyed a mud hot spring while reflecting on the ritual. For me, the Siraya was the last piece of the puzzle in learning about Taiwan.

夜祭隔天中午，還有一場全台灣離海最遠的海祭

透過參加西拉雅一年一度的慶典，一點一點認識

「孝海」，是吉貝耍部落獨特發展出來遙祭慰祖靈、

西拉雅族一度被遺忘的語言、食物、信仰、與傳統，

側擺放，由祭司在臨時祭壇三向請神，以悲慟心情面

忘的原住民族，而是開啟了重新認識台灣這座島嶼，

追懷老家「蕭壠社」的祭典，村民挑著祭品於農路兩

對西南方大海方向，遙祭當年來臺死於海難的先民，安慰亡靈，感念先人。

The next noon, the Kabuasua community conducted an ocean rite. Members placed tributes on both sides of a farm road and a priest used a temporary altar to invite deities and to worship all ancestors who had died upon the ocean.

我意識到，自己正在學習的，並不只是一個被歷史遺重新認識自己的重要旅程。

Attending the annual ritual and learning about the language, food, beliefs, and traditions of the Siraya did more than just teach me about one particular indigenous tribe – it taught me about myself and this island.

日本的年初和年底都相當繁忙，各式各樣的節慶

活動無不卯足全力輪番上場，說起來有好玩的地方，

當然也有辛苦的地方，要做的事情實在太多了，因此算是很容易會讓人們脫離常軌的時節。

On 25 December, when the clock strikes midnight, the whole city seems to change nearly immediately, with the Christmas decorations replaced with New Year ones. The air is still filled with a cheerful vibe, but shops and households have been meticulously tidied up. Transforming a city from having a Western Christmas vibe to a Japanese New Year mood within a week requires a lot of work in a short period. If you’re in Japan during this period, you’ll see this first-hand, as people switch Christmas trees, wreathes, and Santa Clauses with kadomatsu (pine door decorations), shimenawa (rice straw), and Kagami mochi (mirror rice cake) so quickly it’s like they’re changing outfits.

每個國家到了年底或許都很繁忙熱鬧，日本尤其

厲害，每個人都馬不停蹄地動起來。一面參加聖誕晚

會、尾牙（兩者都是喝酒的餐會），同時饋贈年節禮品，還得替家裡做大掃除。為了讓賀年卡如期在 1 月 1 日送達，一般大約在一星期前就得到郵局寄出去。除此之外，為了年初發給小朋友的壓歲錢，大人們會前往銀行準備新鈔，除此之外還要製作年菜。

Japanese people are typically busy at the beginning and end of the year, when the country gets caught up in a series of festivals. It’s a fun time but life can be a tad hectic, too, with so much to be done in so little time.

一過 12 月 25 日凌晨 12 點，整座城市一夜之間

從聖誕節換上了新年的面貌。明明歡樂的氣氛餘韻猶存，卻不只商家，就連個人住宅都俐落地打理完畢。西洋的聖誕節等著在一星期後搖身一變成為日本的新

年，若不一鼓作氣的話，事情便無法順利進行。而且

基本上改變節慶的裝飾，其實也有轉換心情的成分在。這時期如果待在日本，就可以抱持著歡樂的心情，看

著聖誕樹、聖誕花環與聖誕老人等裝飾，變成了門松、注連繩和鏡餅，等於是欣賞了整座城市快速換上新裝的模樣。

Becoming busy at the end of a year is surely a worldwide phenomenon, but Japan is an extreme case. In the city, there’s hustle and bustle every second as people head to Christmas celebrations and end of the year parties, at both of which the liquor flows. They also send New Year gifts, clean their homes, and mail New Year letters in time to arrive by 1 January. And, just like in Taiwan at the Lunar New Year, people visit banks to withdraw crisp new banknotes to gift to youngsters and also prepare New Year feasts.

為社會人士這些聚會都得奉陪，難免會把腸胃搞壞，因此電視上促進消化的藥或胃腸藥的廣告也比平時還

多，且主打聚餐良伴的噱頭。當然，痛的不只有胃，荷包也挺痛的。人們雖然享受節慶的活動，卻又得到處奔走應付各種應酬和新年儀式。

聖誕節結束到了新年，這時候就是全家人看 NHK

紅白歌合戰到凌晨十二點（唯有這天日本全國的小朋

友可以熬夜），隔天一早趁天色還沒亮去海邊看日出，是家裡的慣例。迎接日出莊嚴的朝陽，壯麗的美景幾

乎吹走了冬天的寒意，那景色至今仍無法忘懷。然而，若被雲遮蔽而看不到日出的那年，挫敗感也會深深烙印在孩子心裡。

After the Christmas, with the arrival of the new year, we would watch national broadcaster NHK’s Red & White Year-End Song Festival until midnight – New Year’s Eve is the only day nationwide that kids are allowed to stay up late – and then go to the beach to watch the sunrise the next morning. The solemn sun and magnificent scenery blew the chill of winter away and was simply unforgettable – if the weather was cooperative, that is; when the sky was overcast, us children would hold on to our frustration long after getting back into the car.

Office parties are another highlight at the beginning of the year. These are mandatory events for the working class, and the rich food and drink intake can sometimes result in gastrointestinal issues. So it’s no coincidence the TV is full of ads for digestive tablets and other gastrointestinal treatments during this time of year, claiming that each is your “best companion” at these parties. All these events can hurt not only your stomach but also your wallet.

家裡用不到的東西」，甚至連包裝紙和緞帶都皺巴巴，一看就是用過的。我每每一回家就大哭，責問上天為何要給我這樣的懲罰！？

The children aren’t left out, either. For example, there’s the gift exchange party on Christmas Day. The little ones sit on the ground in a circle, passing gifts to one another in time with a song. The gift you’re holding when the music stops is yours. As a child, I’d spare no effort in preparing the best present I could, only to end up taking home a useless gift wrapped in recycled paper and ribbons. Upon getting home, I’d inevitably cry and ask god why he’d punished me like that.

我們長大成人離開老家後，就幾乎沒有享受過熱

身體的意義，那也是父親制定的新年儀式。和明亮的

We’d take a hot bath once we returned home. It was supposed to cleanse us for the new year and was also part of the New Year ritual my dad had made up. We would bath in the sunshine like we were in a hot spring resort; it was a truly enjoyable experience. Sometimes, to enjoy an even more luxurious New Year, we’d bathe in milk or Japanese wine. My father, always keen to have the perfect appearance, would complete his look with a kimono. After partaking in a few too many drinks, however, he’d invariably get food on his outfit and thus get an earful from our mum – another classic part of our family’s New Year tradition.

活動的日本而言，無論聖誕節或過年，至今仍舊是一文化上的活動，然而一旦身陷其中，就會有過度投入的狀況，哎呀，總之就是這麼一回事。

Since growing up and leaving home, my siblings and I have seldom had the chance to enjoy these festive yearend events. I do miss those days. However, New Year – along with Christmas – remains at the heart of Japan’s festival calendar. These may sound like rather dull and generic cultural events from the outside, but once you’re here in the moment, it’s impossible not to get caught up in the excitement.

Every year, at 11:55 pm on the 31st of December, the Russian president gives an address wishing the people a happy new year. Some cities hold fireworks shows to count down to the New Year, while some citizens buy their own fireworks to celebrate with friends. Russian people prepare gifts and festive cuisine, such as salads, caviar, and tangerines, to enjoy with their family and friends over the holidays. Some also take trips, go skiing, or enjoy iceskating, while others spend the break at home.

A bone of lamb (Z’roa) represents a sacrificial goat, a roasted egg (Beitzah) represents food dedicated to god on the altar, bitter herbs (Maror) represent suffering, and the sweet paste Charoset represents the bricks lifted by Israeli slaves of ancient Egypt. Greens (Karpas and Chazeret) are also found on the plate. Hiding unleavened bread (Afikim), leaving some seats empty, and looking for Elijah are also Passover customs. After dinner, it’s tradition to say at the table: “Next Year in Jerusalem.”

Songkran celebrations are diverse and vary among the different regions of Thailand. Chiang Mai arguably offers the best mix of tourist-friendly activities and tradition. Most famous is the water-splashing custom. Vehicles carry Buddhist statues through the streets to allow people to bathe them, with people young and old also being splashed by the purifying water. It’s quite a celebration, though local art events may give you a better glimpse of the local culture.

Before we introduce Eid al-Fitr, a little background on Ramadan itself. Ramadan is the final month of the Islamic calendar, and people sometimes call it “the month of Ramadan”. Muslims have a number of special practices during this month, particularly fasting: no drink, food, or smoking is allowed during the hours of daylight, and lying, sexual activity, fighting, and war is also forbidden. This is to liberate Muslims from typical daily desires and duties in order to help them focus on improving their inner self.

The rules of Ramadan aren’t enforced to an inhumane degree, with exceptions made for children, the pregnant, the very old, and those who are menstruating. Those who are sick or on a long journey can postpone their fasting and complete it later. Eid al-Fitr is the first day after Ramadan. To mark the occasion, people put on new clothes and visit family and friends, while seniors give pocket money to children – it’s actually quite like the Lunar New Year.

Nowadays, the Day of the Dead is a mix of ancient American rituals and Christian ceremonies. Each household sets up an altar with decorations, candles, and photos of the dead. Through music and dance, the dead are believed to be awakened to return home, guided by marigolds and their family’s psychic energy. At the altar, there are candies in the shape of skulls as well as water, bread, and the dead’s favourite foods, all waiting to comfort the deceased after their long journey home.

係，呈現「觸動心，感動情」主題，藉由山豬的祝福，回頭感念已擁有的豐足，並期盼這些幸福能在下一年延續。

As we move into 2019, the Year of the Pig on the Chinese zodiac, the Ever Rich design team has created pieces with themes of mythology, Taiwan’s indigenous population, Mother Nature, and the mountain pig, a significant animal in this island’s countryside. The stories told by these ceramics connect people and nature while praying for bountiful harvests and for happiness to extend into the New Year.

主題企劃 According to traditional aboriginal beliefs, mountain pigs embodied deities and spirits of Taiwan’s mountains, with ancestral spirits residing in each part of the animal. In hopes of a plentiful crop and good luck, they maintained a balanced and respectful relationship with mountain pigs and their natural environment – the optimal example of humans living in nature with harmony. Accordingly, the mountains and natural patterns of this year’s ceramic jar series allude to offerings from Mother Nature.

On top of this complicated production process, the craftspeople utilised dualcolour glazes in order to present the jars’ patterns and colours and vividly and vibrantly as possible. E a c h c o l o u r re q u i re d manual separation between the two separate applications, with each porcelain going in and out of the kiln five times for all the various decoration work to be completed. When processing such pieces multiple times in temperatures of up to 1,200 degrees Celsius, successfully developing the exquisite colours and patterns seen in this series is particularly challenging.

The Charming Aesthetics of Handcrafted Porcelain

陶瓷業界有句話說道「燒瓷沒有師父」，意指即

便經驗再老道，由於製陶過程變數過多，若非窯火熄父。為了製作別出心裁的生肖瓷罐，昇恆昌與臺灣百

是經過煉泥、製坯、浸釉、燒窯等多達 50 個步驟，才得以完成，過程可說是膽顫心驚，成敗一翻兩瞪眼。

Many variables interact during the porcelain production process – to the point that the final result is always uncertain, regardless of a craftsperson’s experience and skill. To produce our unique New Year pieces, Ever Rich worked with industry-leading artisans in Yingge, a New Taipei township and Taiwan’s ceramics and porcelain capital for over a century. Completing each piece in the new series required more than 50 steps, each more intricate than the last.

Celebrating the Lunar New Year

2015 羊年開始，每逢新春皆以在地手藝形塑對未來

的祝福。猶記雞年瓷罐，以刺繡工藝為創作意象，為雞披上孔雀圖騰的華麗新裝，融合傳統文化與現代時

尚風格；狗年以「愛與信任」為題，將向日葵總是面

向陽光的特性，比擬為狗對主人的忠心跟隨，並在花瓣圖樣裡藏著互相擁抱的人與狗，彰顯擁抱所帶來的愛的力量。

The series is the latest in Ever Rich’s annual offering of Chinese astrology-inspired Lunar New Year jars, which started in 2015. For the jars for the Year of the Rooster – 2017’s Zodiac – embroidery techniques were used to add a touch of glamour to the traditional culture being celebrated. Themed “Love and Trust”, the jars for 2018’s Year of the Dog used sunflowers to signify loyalty, with images of people and canines cuddling included in each petal.

特別展」將台灣獨特的人文和風土帶入機場，不但讓初次造訪台灣的外國旅人驚艷，也勾起台灣旅客懷

舊的往事。雖然展覽已劃上句點，但我們走入永康街裡「品墨設計」和「品墨良行」，邀請人稱「小富哥」的王慶富，分享如何用紙張乘載的溫度和質感，透過日常載

體——紙，讓設計走進生活，傳遞生活中的光和熱。

unconventional exhibition, the Sun Tanning Project, at Taipei Songshan

Airport this summer. Invited by Ever Rich and the General Association of

Chinese Culture, designer Ching-Fu Wang’s exploration of Taiwan’s culture

and terroir amazed first-time visitors to Taiwan while triggering nostalgia among locals. With the exhibition now over, we sat down with Wang to talk

about how he expresses warmth and life through the medium of paper.

曬出日子裡的真實感受

Sun-Soaked Authenticity

為紙張著迷，除了是視覺設計的媒材運用，更重

要的是紙張帶來的意義和生活的感受，「紙張不只呈

現文字和圖像的意思，還包含紙張本身帶來的感覺」

王慶富堅定的說，與紙張實際接觸所帶來的感官體驗，都讓訊息的傳遞更全面且更真實，「這是手機或其他載體難以替代的。」

According to Wang, paper is favoured both as a visual design material and for the meaning and life that it carries. “Paper not only presents words and images but is also evocative,” he says. Touching paper imparts an authentic, tangible feeling, for which reason “it’s unlikely to be replaced by smartphone or other media.”

「晒日子」即是王慶富把對生活的感知能力和設

計思考，完整落實的成功計畫。這個企劃由紙張和陽光兩個元素構成，無需油墨和印刷機器，參與者僅等

待日曬等自然條件的催化，讓紙張自然變黃，上頭的圖案和文字遂能漸漸清晰。

In the Sun Tanning Project, Wang integrates his acute sensitivity to life with his intuitive perspective on design. Composed of paper and sunshine, the project requires no ink or printers: instead, participants wait for the sun or other natural forces to gradually reveal the images and text on paper.

走入第 6 個年頭的「晒日子」，最初的契機是從

工作室牆上一張因局部日曬而產生圖案的紙條開啟，如此簡單和有生命力的企劃，讓他們在 2014 年贏得香

港設計中心的「亞洲最具影響力設計大獎」。之後的

每一年，仍持續創新和突破，近年來更結合時間元素、立體方式呈現，讓更多人願意慢下來，體會時間的流

轉，隨著曝曬紙張的「日出而作，日落而息」，重新與大自然有了互動。

The project was inspired by patterns created by the sun on a piece of paper in Wang’s studio six years ago. This simple but powerful idea received Design for Asia Awards in Hong Kong in 2014 and has continued evolving since. Recently, the project has incorporated new dimensions, including that of time, inviting the audience to slow down, appreciate the passage of time, and engage with nature again.

My Luggage Story 「一開始的確並未想到這個企劃有這麼多可能

性，都是回顧時才漸漸發現的。」王慶富說，如同這

項企劃源自於無意發現的生活中小細節，他並沒有提前設想「晒日子」未來的長期計劃，他知道，只要用心體會生活，這個企劃肯定會以一種「有機」的方式長出屬於自己的樣子。

“I didn’t expect this project could take so many forms. It was only in retrospect that I realised this versatility,” Wang says. As the project stems from details of life, he doesn’t have a specific long-term plan for the Sun Tanning Project. However, Wang adds, he understands that as long as we feel and live life, the project will grow organically and in its own way.

自然的生命力穿越國界 Nature Crosses Borders

到由中華文化總會在東京舉辦的「Taiwan Plus 2018

文化台灣」活動，傳達關於傳統農業生活和大自然的思考，讓身處不同文化的人們有機會對於紙張及台灣有更深一層的瞭解。

The eponymous “sun tanning” refers to how crops are dried in traditional agriculture. It requires sunshine and physical labour, and alternatives are required during times of rain. Wang brought the project to Tokyo in September

as part of the General Association of Chinese Culture’s Taiwan Plus 2018. He used it to portray traditional life to people from different cultural backgrounds, guiding them to better understand paper itself as well as Taiwan.

曬」相關的靈感。在東京近郊的茨城縣，他遇見一位漆器老師傅，老師傅將面對漆器的嚴謹職人精神，延

伸到「掃把」的製作上，無中生有，從種植掃把植物開始，摘取後日光曝曬、手工製作掃把，甚至是後續推廣辦理工作坊，全程動手參與，並將其中的訣竅和紮實的製作方式，親身的傳承給孩子們，讓王慶富也

再次感受到大自然、生活與設計三者之間密不可分的關係。

While in Tokyo, Wang took time to explore other works inspired by the sun. In Ibaraki Prefecture, he met a lacquer master who extends his dedication of craftsmanship from lacquer to brooms.The master oversees each step of the process, from planting crops to hand-making the brooms, and organizes workshops to teach his skills to new generations of artisans. Observing this, Wang again felt the inseparable connections between nature, life, and design.

Besides his obsession with paper, Wang also enjoys the outdoors and mountain camping in particular, which he enjoys variably as a way of being alone and as a social activity. When part of a group, he often brings along a coffee-making set to make his hiking companions hot cups of joe to enjoy in the frosty mountains.

Wang is attracted to the methodical and rhythmical process of grinding the beans, pouring the hot water, and taking in the resulting aroma. To him, making and sharing coffee in the mountain environment is an immense pure pleasure.

He frequently visits Japan for work, but says he’s “more attracted to countries drastically different from Taiwan in culture and lifestyle”, such as the mystic serenity of East Europe and unique aesthetics around the Aegean Sea. He’s currently looking forward to experiencing the remote and primitive environment of the Nordic countries.

As we all know, the seasons are reversed in the Northern and Southern Hemispheres. The seasonal contrast is no more obvious than during the holiday season. In the north, it’s the classic White Christmas of frosty weather and even snowmen. In southern countries such as Australia, however, Christmas falls shortly after the start of summer, making for a completely different experience. Having explored Australia as a holiday worker, Roger gives us a tour of his favourite city: Melbourne.

墨爾本，是一座讓我一去再去的城市，至今我一

共去了 6 次。她是不是全世界最適宜人居的城市，看法見仁見智，但它深厚的文化底蘊，撐起的是一座城

市不可取代的風格與性格，摩登的、嬉皮的、狂野的、古典的，全都是她萬化的樣貌。初來乍到時，在地朋友曾劈頭警告我：「小心喔！墨爾本是個無底洞。」

I’ve visited Melbourne six times so far. Whether it’s the most liveable city in the world is up to you, but there’s clearly a distinct lifestyle here rooted in modern, hippie, and classical cultures and qualities. When I arrived for the first time, a local friend told me to be careful: Melbourne, he said, was addictive.

文化已讓人無比耽溺，裡頭潛藏著的咖啡館、早午餐、巧克力、塗鴉、甜點、個性小店等，都各有自己的一套，加上熱門節慶活動高度交疊著運動賽事，幾乎全

年度覆蓋住這座澳洲南方的幻美之城，旅人們趨之若鶩，想著如何偷點墨爾本人的生活感，日日歡愉得就像是沒有黑夜那樣，但不斷浸淫的下場，可能是自己先發高燒，染上墨爾本熱。

I quickly realised what he was talking about. There’s the well-known street culture, with café seating spilling onto sidewalks as well as brunch places, chocolate, graffiti, and indie shopping. Then there’s the many festivals and sports events that fill in every gap on the calendar. Travellers come with eagerness and leave hoping to take some of Melbourne’s vibes with them. Day here spills out like the night is never coming, as you fall into an intimate relationship with the city.

活動一波波，節慶密集度從年底開始逐漸攀上高

峰。11 月 21 日率先登場的是女皇市場裡每周三晚上現身、長達 17 周的「夏夜限定市集」，維多利亞女皇

市場本身和南墨爾本市場，以及販售諸多道地南歐風情小菜的普蘭市場，堪稱是墨城三大最具歷史感的老傳統菜市，特別是每到週六，跟著在地人到女皇市場

搶買收市前清倉特賣的食材，在物價高昂的澳洲是極重要的小確幸，而當南半球轉入夏季、夜市開張時，老市場入夜搖身一變，變成時髦場域，彷若小吃聯合國般，各國美食攤頭前擠滿準備蹭食的男男女女，座位永遠不夠，於是大家乾脆三五席地而坐暢聊吃喝，手中一定有杯冰啤或是桑格利亞甜調酒。

The event calendar peaks as the year ends. On 21 November, the Summer Night Market opens at the Queen Victoria Market (QVM), running every Wednesday night for 17 weeks. This is one of the most historical markets in Melbourne alongside the South Melbourne Market and the Prahran Market, the latter of which is a trove of authentic Southern European dishes. On Saturdays, the thing to do is follow locals around the QVM and pick up bargain food and groceries – which can get quite expensive in Australia. When the weather warms up, the markets shift to later in the evening. People spill in, noshing on exotic cuisine and sitting on the ground to catch up with friends as the seating is never enough to accommodate all the visitors. You’ll definitely find yourself holding a cold beer or sangria.

月的「月光電影院」緊接著在皇家植物園開幕，精彩選片輪番上陣，最特別的就是跟著大家一起躺在整片星空草皮下看電影，遠方有亮閃閃的摩天大樓群陪襯，身旁盡是一堆還沒來得及換裝的西裝白領，下班後直接拎著抱枕和外帶熱食，公事包裡放了瓶紅酒，就急忙趕來赴電影約了。

Starting on 29 November, the Moonlight Cinema starts up at the Royal Botanic Garden, showing films for four months. It’s a wonderful experience to lie under the starry sky with friends to catch a movie with sparkling skyscrapers on the horizon as suit-clad white-collar workers grab pillows, takeaway food, and wine before searching for a spot on the grass.

Around the same time, on the fourth weekend of January, young people tune in to the Triple J radio station for the Hottest 100 – a countdown of the year’s top hundred songs as voted by listeners, earning it the title of “the world's greatest music democracy”.

The festive vibe grows stronger during Christmas and the New Year. On Boxing Day, shops offer massive discounts to clear out their leftover holiday stock, attracting waves of locals and travellers alike. A few days later is the rocking New Year’s Eve countdown. One of the four tennis Grand Slams, the Australian Open, arrives at the end of January and marks the arrival of peak sightseeing season. The tournament lasts for two weeks and gathers the world’s best players to compete at Melbourne Park, while fans compete outside the venue to book tickets and hotels. Those who aren’t lucky enough to get seats for the centre courts can watch lesser-know players on the outside courts or head to Federation Square to watch the action on the big screen. If you’re planning on taking the latter option, head to Degraves Street for brunch beforehand.

The festival hits its highest note with the Pride March, which in 2019 will be held on 3 Feb. The end of the Midsumma Festival marks the arrival of the one-day St Kilda Festival. It adds even more holiday vibes to the suburb, which is already loaded with beaches, music, beer, sunshine, and hot guys and girls.

These gentrifying areas are home to artistic and gay communities, and you can find independent shops in abundance in them. Tram Route 96 connects East Brunswick and St Kilda Beach, making it something of a “hippie road”. Brunswick Street is another highlight worth visiting for a look at how hipster Melbournians live. You can get interesting goods at the Clear iT Factory Outlet or try a tofu hamburger and mushroom tart at the Vegie Bar. I also recommend Sonido! and the Fitz Café.
