Congratulations to Deanna on the birth of her chubby cheeked cuteness. Bloomin’ beautiful Also inside this issue we see the welcome return of the very beautiful Alize Lily. we love on page 42. Who wouldn’t want something they can put their essential bits and bobs in that you don’t have to leave laying around when you need to be arms free! Also see two of our regular feature writers discuss the importance of staying grounded. Social media has fast become part of many of our daily lives. But that doesn’t mean it should take over! Be sensible, understand what it really means and how to use it properly. Stephanie and Fay talk phones, Instagram, motherhood and keeping it real. Speaking of little ones, a huge congratulations to two of our team, Deanna Bailey on the birth of your beautiful daughter and allowing me to be the first to take some pictures of her. 2015 SEES THE INNOVATIVE TEAM AT EMG PRODUCING A NEW WAY TO BE INVOLVED WITH A MODEL SEARCH WITHOUT THE NEED FOR LENGTHY AUDITION PROCESSES, FINDING OUTFITS TO WEAR AT A FINAL EVENT, OR SOURCING A SPONSORSHIP FEE TO BE INVOLVED FURTHER DOWN THE LINE. THIS IS THE WAY FORWARD IF YOU ARE SERIOUS ABOUT BECOMING A MODEL. LET’S FACE IT, WE ALL HAVE BUSY LIVES RIGHT? THIS IS THE ‘PEOPLE FIRST’ FRIENDLY OPTION FOR THOSE OF YOU WHO WANT TO BECOME A MODEL BUT DON’T HAVE THE TIME OR MEANS TO ENTER A LONG DRAWN OUT CONTEST. PLUS AS EMG IS A REPUTABLE ORGANISATION AT THE CENTRE OF THE MODELLING INDUSTRY OPERATING THE UK STANDARDS AND BOARD OF ETHICS, YOU KNOW YOU CAN TRUST AND RELY UPON YOUR INVOLVEMENT WITH SUCH A CREDIBLE BRAND. Eligibity for entry in the EMG model search 2015 Female, of any age (minors under the age of 17 must have written parental permission to apply) Must not have an existing model agency signing in the UK. Having run a model search in a competition format over the past few years, with a final event to establish our winner, we have decided to change this process to give us more one to one time with our potential winner and other models we wish to sign throughout the year. This therefore opens the door to far more opportunities than ever before. There will be one overall winner who will become the FACE OF EM Magazine and win a signing with EMG Models along with a host of other prizes. The winner will be selected by our professional panel and announced later on this year. In the meantime we aim to take on a number of applicants suitable for signing. The winner may be one of those we choose to sign now, or an apprentice model we take on after training and instruction. What makes our model search different to all the rest is that there are no expensive events to attend, no need to spend a fortune on clothes or ask your family to attend an event away from home, and NO SPONSORSHIP FEES involved. All you are asked to invest in is two high end professional workshops. Therefore you are investing in and gaining considerably for yourself an immediately visible return and benefit. One which will provide you with a huge amount of art direction training AND amazing images and the second which will enhance your knowledge and modelling ability enormously. Plus you may be given the opportunity to become agency signed all within the process. No months of waiting for a ‘final event’. This is opportunity every step of the way! Previous winners of our model searches have gone on to become successful working models. We only select the best of the best to be associated with EMG and do not put every applicant through. If you have been invited to the model test day you are one step closer to becoming a well informed, professional and successful model. *The full details as above have been made available from the date of release of the EMG model search 2015. All applicants are requested to view and research both the EMG organisation and terms and conditions above prior to deciding as to whether to continue with the process. A modelling contract is not guaranteed to all applicants. Work within the modelling industry is also not guaranteed even if signed with an agent. WHAT

cannot believe we are practically in Autumn already! Lots has been going on since my last EM offering, starting with the most exciting- I'M GOING TO BE A MUMMY!
thousands of miles away from you is incredible, and yet ironically, this instant connection has affected the communication we have with loved ones just a stone's throw away.
The second you discover you're pregnant, instantly something begins to change in you. This wash of responsibility and built-in motherly instinct consumes you to the point, a teeny bunch of cells becomes the most beautiful bunch of cells that have ever existed and you must protect them... Fast forward six months and ‘littleone' wriggles around constantly in your tummy, so strong you can now distinguish between a teeny foot and a bum giving you a shove. It's completely magical and aside from my Husband, the best gift I have been blessed with. My only prayer now is for my baby to continue to grow and deliver healthily and happily in November! With this new chapter pending, it's stirred something in me that I'd considered before but never appreciated from a parental perspective. So put simply, what will life be like for my child in ten years time?

I have written before about the impact of technology, or more specifically, social networking on our lives. It scares me now when I go out to dinner the amount of people who are sat on their phones, as oppose to actually talking to each other. In their eyes, the fact they have just uploaded a picture of their food and a group selfie of their evening's company, constitutes for interaction. This disregard for the traditional usage of our mouths to communicate is a strong cause for concern. Soon, we may find we have no need to talk at all or even have to actually go out because virtually both are covered? Alongside my Husband, I will teach our child the key values of communication without the help of a keyboard and screen. Learning to listen and interact with company is imperative not just because
it’s polite but to improve one’s confidence, and ability to adjust to various situations and personalities. Together, these key communication skills will ultimately lead to a child’s latter success. Aside from simply changing the way we interact, social networking has also created a generation of vulgar and narcissistic individuals that spend their lives irrelevantly posting images of themselves, better referred to as a ‘Selfie’. For me, there are two types of selfie. The ones which actually relate to something or the ones which I would respect more if they were captioned honestly with, 'look at me and how wonderful I am'. In some cases, I appreciate someone’s personal celebrations of their physical beauty- perhaps they have lost a lot of weight and want to share their success or like myself, are pregnant and want to show their growing bump? But what excuses are there for the people sitting in traffic, ceasing these pointless opportunities to pout and upload? That isn’t celebrating anything except self-obsession. Through www.fayandrea. co.uk I work with many younger children and it frightens me to see they have Instagram profiles with thousands of followers prying in to their young lives; lives that would be far better spent learning and enjoying the Every Model Magazine

Instead they are begging for #instalikes #likesforlikes with the misconception that success relies on the amount of random nobodies who follow your posts. This new concept of popularity has led to the completely wrong people in society becoming idolised and glorified purely because they have generated large social networking followings. And as a result, they are being given a voice to completely miseducate our younger generation on how to become successful. As a Photographer, I have a huge passion for taking photos. Fortunately after annoying my Husband for years on holiday with my snapping obsession, he too has adapted to my way of thinking and why it's important to capture memories. Thanks to the evolution of the photographic World, digital photography can now capture everything and equally delete it just as quickly, so the days of 20
Every Model Magazine
roll-on-throwaway-cameras with thirty pictures limit are long gone! However, there's a difference between capturing and documenting. Capturing an event, which you'll never get back is vital. But documenting there and then actually defeats the object of the capture because in the time spent uploading the picture with the perfect filter and caption, you're missing everything else going on around you. I ask, why not capture and then put your device down to really savour that moment? The picture will still be there. This need to document instantaneously always strikes a cord with me particularly when people are on holiday, at a wedding or just given birth. For example, if you're so rested on that fabulous beach then why are you on Facebook telling us you're now going for dinner or drinking a cocktail? Sure, take the picture but upload it once you're back home and want to reminisce on that glorious event. Then Weddings: last year, together with my FayAndrea partner, Andrea, we launched www. fayandreaweddings.co.uk I'm incredibly blessed to see it going from strength-tostrength and nothing beats the feeling of capturing love on such a high level. But it’s equally frustrating to spend time setting up the perfect shot with your Bride and Groom only to see an amateur version has been instantly uploaded to
Facebook via a guest’s iPhone. Though I'm a big believer phone camera technology is of no replacement (yet) for professional cameras or a professional eye, it's still frustrating to see the shot showcased before we have an opportunity to do it ourselves, and moreover, has that guest checked the Bride and Groom actually want their private moments shared with the rest of the World before they have even had a moment to look at the pictures themselves? And then finally, my ultimate annoyance- parents that upload a picture of their newborn fresh out of the womb. A new life is undoubtedly one of the most precious and exciting moments to share, but please, I beg, at least spend ten minutes bonding with the child before announcing their nakedness to the World. My rant must end here with the hope some of what I have written will strike a cord. As great as it is to develop and improve individually, together and as a World, the simplicity of life and what we are given should not be lost. Ideally, let's utilise the benefits of technology to enhance the traditionalism and simple aspects of society without losing the purpose of why we are here. And as for the Selfie, as beautiful as you are, please consider if your profile really does need another picture of you today? You have posted five of you in the last hour already. model skincare By Chelley Wilson-Stimson Wilson White Photography
As a model and photographer, skin care has always been one of my top priorities for both myself and for models I am shooting. So what better subject to discuss in this issue? Skincare is paramount for models because it is the skin that reflects the light for a photograph, reducing the amount of editing work required post shoot. To ensure your skin stays fresh and clear a good well balanced diet is required with plenty of fruits and vegetables and essential fats. Over processed foods and high carbohydrates will tire the skin making it look less firm and increase wrinkles as poor diet speeds up the aging process resulting in a tired old looking face. Keep skin refreshed through the use of good serums and ensure you always take off your make up before sleeping and exercise. Let the skin breath and repair while you sleep. There is a good reason we are told to get our “beauty sleep”. Sleeping is a necessity, not a luxury. A good night's sleep is just as crucial to maintaining wellness along with a healthy diet and proper exercise. Sleep is a restorative process. While we're sleeping, our brain is cycling through the 3 stages of sleep: light, deep and REM. Sleep 22
Every Model Magazine
restores, rejuvenates and energises the body and brain. Our immune systems are recharged, cells grow and repair themselves, and our bodies conserve energy. Unfortunately, many of us do not value our sleep. In this "open all night – 24/7" society we now live in, four out of ten people are trading much-needed sleep hours for longer hours at the office, gym, club and other activities which seem more important or interesting. What they may not realise is that lack of sleep takes a toll on our mental and physical wellbeing. It can cause dark circles instantly and over time continued lack of sleep will age the face more with the appearance of wrinkles and sagging skin. Studies around the world show that even minimal sleep loss has a profoundly detrimental impact on mood, cognition, performance, productivity, communication skills, accident rates and general health. For optimal functioning throughout the day, the average adult needs between seven to nine hours sleep a night. So maybe that’s why it’s called “beauty sleep” as without it we are might not be as radiant or beautiful. As well as all these useful tips for the skin it is a good idea to use a great skincare
routine to work on the skin’s surface, all the nutrition, diet, sleep and exercise will keep the skin fed from below but what about keeping the face refreshed for work or an important shoot? I have recently been searching for a product that is both animal friendly, environmentally friendly and is great for the skin plus producing great results. With the higher incidences of Cancer that seem to be more and more apparent I was also concerned with the increasing number of “nasties” we apply to our skins daily in the bid for less wrinkles or a smoother firm skin! My search led me to a company called Arbonne, who supply pure, safe, beneficial Swiss products. The products are formulated without talc, tallow, animal products or by-products, formaldehyde donating preservatives, phthalates, synthetic dyes, cholesterol, trans fats and parabens. They are never tested on animals and certified vegan. Their products and philosophy on lifestyle are based on an approach to holistic well-being. Transparency and honesty are the hallmarks of their product integrity. I was very kindly sent one of their skin care ranges to test for myself, to see how
Every Model Magazine

it would perform for my skin, how it looked and felt and if it was great under make up for my models. The products I tested was the RE9 Range which claim to be capable of allowing the skin to perform at its optimum especially after wearing make-up designed for cover shoots and photography all day. I enlisted my good friend
24
Every Model Magazine
and fellow photographer Rachel Strange who works freelance for my firm Wilson White Photography, to take some pictures of me once I had tested the skincare range for a week. Bearing in mind I am a 40 year old woman, I’m sure you will agree the results are great! My skin reflected the light perfectly. The range will not only stop skin from ageing with its
clinically tested results that help improve skin firmness in just 24 hours, it also, powered by the nine major age defying elements, provides visible results. Yes, we are talking the appearance of fewer lines and wrinkles and more youthful looking skin! My search is over I think I have found something I will use for a long time to come. To feel the full benefit or the Arbonne RE9 range I followed each step and product every day for a week. Step 1 – Smoothing Facial Cleanser; - this rich, pearlescent crème formula gently washes away makeup and impurities, leaving your skin feeling smooth and refreshed. Step 2 – Regenerating Toner; - a quick misting of this antioxidant rich, pH balanced toner refreshes skin and prepares it for the
next step – firming and lifting skin’s appearance. Step 3 – Intensive Renewal Serum; - It’s called intensive because it’s concentrated. The collagen supporting ingredients are clinically proven to hold in moisture and help visibly firm and lift, while lessening the appearance of fine lines. Step 4 – Corrective Eye Crème; Help diminish the look of fine lines, puffiness and dark circles with this exclusive eye crème. I found this worked very well and also helped my eyes stay refreshed. Step 5 – Restorative Day Crème SPF 20; The concentrated day crème formula moisturises whilst helping prevent sunburn. It has collagen supporting ingredients and botanicals to help capture a youthful appearance.
Step 6 – Night Crème; Now for your beauty sleep. So rich with an ultra-hydrating blend of botanicals and collagen supporting ingredients. Wake up to visibly youthful looking skin – it’s not just in your dreams. The range of products is not just limited to Skincare, their essence of wellbeing and healthy living is
carried through a range of items, skincare to healthy eating and supplements. As a photographer and model and having had the opportunity to review these products in both situations I felt it greatly improved my skin tone and skins reflective elements. I will certainly be using it again and recommending it to models I photograph.

Top nail disasters Discoloured nails, dry cuticles and bubbles in nail polish are just some of the nail disasters that could easily be avoided. That’s according to the beauty gurus at Hairtrade. com who have shared 10 common nail problems and easy ways to prevent them. Among them are care
tips which help to stop nails from breaking easily, to tricks that keep nails looking nice including how to avoid chips. They also share advice on how to make your manicure last longer and tips to keep the edges of your nails smooth. A beauty expert from
My manicure doesn’t last long enough If you find yourself talking to your friends and realising their nails seem to stay in good condition for longer than yours, you might be making a simple nail mistake. Solution: Just as applying foundation to dirty or oily skin is a big no no, painting your nails when they aren’t clean can cause trouble later on. Make sure you clean your nails before painting them.

Every Model Magazine
Hairtrade.com said: “We’ve all experienced these nail disasters at some point and there’s nothing more frustrating than something small ruining your nails. “From prepping your nails correctly to using the right top coat, there are a lot of things you can do to ensure your manicure lasts longer.”
I get a messy finish when painting with my non-dominant hand Solution: Although it can be tempting to rush to get it out of the way, using more coats with less polish when painting with your non-dominant hand is the way to keep things looking neat.
The ends of my nails never look smooth Jagged edges look messy and can scratch, so definitely avoid them where possible. The main way these are caused is by filing your nails incorrectly, so break this habit and your nails will be looking good in no time. Solution: When filing your nails, stroke in one direction rather than going back and forth for a smooth result.

My nails break too easily
My nail polish always goes thick and gloopy
If you’re fed up of painting your nails and then having one snap straight away you’re not alone. We’ve all had a manicure ruined by a broken nail at some point.
After time, nail polish tends to go thick, which is a nightmare if like us you switch your colour often so don’t use them up quickly. Don’t throw them away quite yet though – there is a way to fix this.
Solution: Avoid quick dry nail polish as this dries out your nails and causes them to break easily. You can also use nail strengthener to keep your nails in top condition. My colour always chips off After painting your nails, it often feels like you can’t do anything for fear of chipping them. Everyday tasks, such as washing the dishes, can spoil all of the hard work. Solution: Look out for longlasting top coats and apply every few days as a preventative measure, rather than waiting for nails to chip before fixing things. My nails are sometimes discoloured It’s not uncommon to be left with a slight yellow or green tinge to your nails after removing nail polish, particularly if you’ve used a bright colour. This isn’t a great look but don’t worry, it can be avoided. Solution: Always use a base coat to create a barrier between your nails and the paint – this will make it easier to remove colour.
28
Every Model Magazine
Solution: Invest in some thinner and add a few drops of this to get nail polish back to a better consistency. As a preventative measure, storing nail polish in a cool place also helps to stop it from thickening. My cuticles are dry Dry cuticles look messy and make at-home manicures a bit of a nightmare. Cutting your cuticles isn’t recommended, so it’s not uncommon for people to feel a bit lost. Solution: Apply cuticle oil to your nails regularly to keep them in top condition. At a pinch, baby oil also works to rehydrate. The strokes from the brush are visible There’s nothing more annoying than being able to see the strokes from the brush on your freshly painted nails – it’s frustrating and easy enough to prevent. Solution: Start with a blob of paint in the centre of your nail and move outwards, using plenty of thin layers. I get small bubbles in my nail polish bottles The bubbles in nail polish bottles rise when applied to your nails, and these unruly bubbles make nails look bumpy and messy, easily ruining a nice manicure. Solution: Store nail polishes in the fridge in warmer weather to stop these bubbles developing and always roll the bottle instead of shaking it. Every Model Magazine

true beauty Best selling international author, inspirational speaker, TV presenter and charity campaigner Katie Piper announced as the ambassador of Remescar
Katie Piper is delighted to announce she has become the ambassador of Remescar, a range of medicated skin care products. A large percentage of the population have scars, stretch marks and spider veins and for some it means loss of self-confidence and social withdrawal. Katie admits through her own personal experience, she still has bad days when she feels unconfident and believes Remescar is one of the important treatments that’s helped her to get her body confidence back. Offering a range of solutions the treatments are clinically proven to treat and prevent these imperfections, whilst maintaining healthy skin. Katie is keen to raise awareness of the range with women and men everywhere, giving everyone the opportunity to help get their skin confidence back. Katie was delighted this revolutionary treatment was available without prescription and found it supported the healing process of both her old and new scars, including stretch marks post pregnancy. Katie explains, "I'm delighted to be announced as the ambassador of Remescar as it is a treatment I believe makes a visible difference to scars and stretchmarks. I found it really effective at 30

Naturally when I was pregnant I used the Remescar Stretchmark cream as I already loved the scar stick. I also love the fact that it's available from Boots; meaning it's accessible to everyone. It contains an SPF15 UVA and UVB screen to protect scars from UV radiation, which is really important to me." Katie first started using the treatments four years ago and is part of her daily regime and a firm staple in her bag. Katie says “I wouldn't be without Remescar; it's a must have product for me. CONSCIOUS
LIVING
It is clear that today’s society encourages distraction and evasion as a means to experience happiness. But actually this takes you far away from yourself and just postpones dissatisfaction. The true solution is to concentrate on what nourishes the soul and gives you life. When people hear the word “soul” do they really know what it means? The term has been used since ancient times and it is wrongly associated to purely religious connotations. Renowned philosophers such as Plato and Aristotle seemed to disagree on whether the soul was immortal or not, but what is established in various research about the soul is that all properties and actions of the soul cannot be cognized from materiality. It can be described as the remembrance of our original home, from which we have come. “The soul is purely the traveller on its way back home. The journey is the “life” we adopt on the way home. The vehicle is the body in which the soul travels through life,” states the “raja yoga” method that translates to “yoga of the mind”. If you think this sounds like a load of spiritual nonsense then you only have to look on the internet to find out that science is now being used to prove these notions. Jeff Lieberman (MIT graduate), scientist and engineer, made a recognisable scientific argument for spiritual enlightenment in 2011. He explains how our separateness from 32

each other is an illusion that ultimately creates most of the suffering we experience. He goes on further to suggest how regaining “consciousness” and feeling the source that he calls “pure energy” will help us recognise our fundamental “interconnectedness with humans, all animals and life.” If you think of it this way; the soul is this internal “source energy” and is only accessible through “conscious living” and there are many ways to nourish it but we have become so concentrated on the body and external living that many people never get to experience this consciousness. Worldrenowned philosophers, scientists, academics, gurus and religious figures have been trying to explain this ideology to humanity for millennia but yet we are still hypnotised to distractions. Most of the Western world compulsively lives in the past or future. We end up building our own realties in the future and we continuously let the Every Model Magazine

The health and cosmetic industries are pocketing billions whilst the average Londoner can’t even get on the housing ladder. It is written in limitless articles about the amount of people leaving London for a better way of life. It is evident this is due to financial pressure but many over look the social aspect. In my case I have left London because I realised many people let the environment determine their consciousness or in many respects prison their inner growth. It seems that many, like me, have flocked to Berlin where it has been named a haven for creative people searching for a less stressful way of 34

past determine our thought process that results in us being so emotionally attached to our own lives, rather than living consciously in the present moment. I believe Einstein describes this best; “A human being is a part of the whole called by us the universe, a part limited in time and space. He experiences himself, his thoughts and feeling as something separated from the rest, a kind of optical delusion of his consciousness. This delusion is a kind of prison for us, restricting us to our personal desires and to affection for a few people nearest to us. Our task must be to free ourselves from this prison by widening our circle of compassion to embrace all living creatures and the whole of nature in its beauty.” Firstly speaking of my experience of living in London for five years I finally realised how society has become slaves to the vicious ego circle. We have become so focused on material life that we no longer remember how to even live consciously in the present moment. Our thoughts have become clouded with fear, insecurities, anxieties and worries constantly trying to “do better, to look better, to have the best.” When you keep feeding and using the ego it causes unnecessary division and seclusion from your true self and the rest of humanity. When the focus becomes; “I want, I need, I must have,” then endless amounts of people are just competing with one another and themselves. Of course when you add money into the equation then it has become nothing more than a “must have trend” and expensive game for; the biggest apartment, the newest clothes, the famous girlfriend, the richest boyfriend, the best body, the healthiest lifestyle… and so on. Living for the ego is the unhealthiest way to live and is in fact soul destroying.
life. Of course the busier and more stressed you are then you haven’t got the ability to be creative. According to Numbeo, the online cost-of-living database, you can maintain the same standard of living in Berlin (£2,177) for half the price of London (£4,200), assuming that you rent in both cities. The consumer prices in Berlin are 30% less, and the rental costs are almost 70% lower than in the UK’s capital. This lack of pressure has felt by many has been explained by The Guardian when they interviewed numerous “ex-Londoners” on why they’ve made the move. A common theme seems to be the constant capitalistic pressures and materialistic lifestyle that London offers. Kavita Meelu a street-food entrepreneur explains; “You just become a part of that system – you’re not even aware of it. In London, within 30 seconds of meeting someone, you ask them what they do, because you think their job is going to define them and you’ll be able to categorise them. After some years here, I’ve learnt that you just don’t ask people that, because anybody could be anything, but it doesn’t tell you who they are. “Luckily I believe I left at the right time where I have fond memories of being young in my twenties but before I became too sour with what I was experiencing. The city started to feel very one-dimensional. I was watching a cultural vacuum – my environment was becoming very clear in front of me as I stopped conforming to the system. The variety of the London I grew up with and loved hardly exist any more. The city has gorged on itself; people are being sold a lifestyle that they’ll never be able to afford. I think it might end up as a very expensive ghost town but I hope that won’t be the case. Supposedly we have become “super intelligent beings” but we aim our thoughts continuously to the external rather than the internal. We have become reliant upon external factors to determine our happiness. The phrase “money makes the world go round” - I strongly beg to differ with - as we know and maybe for some it’s too complex to understand, but our planet orbits the sun on an axial tilt. Our sun then vortexes at 70,000km/hr through space dragging our entire solar system with it, and because of this astoundingly perfect alignment which is a true miracle then life began here on Earth. Yet we are destroying this miracle world in which we live every day by land grabbing and mining so we can have the newest Every Model Magazine

technology and gadgets. Which get delivered to you as soon as possible all adding to the record rates of pollution and global warming, so you can take the perfect ‘selfie’ to exploit on social media and keep the vicious ego circle spiraling out of control. It is natural forces out of our control that makes the world go round yet it seems that many are oblivious to these natural forces which if changed could easily mean death for the entire planet. Yet we seem more concerned with ruining our planet and embarking wars on one another. Isn’t this just pure madness? London for me now feels like a conforming web where everyone follows the latest diet fads, purchasing the newest super foods or spend on physically enhancing or changing our bodies. Many do not seek professional help before they extremely change their diet therefore not knowing the damage this does to the body. It is no wonder that people end up binging or eating emotionally, because your mind is giving you mixed signals on what you want rather than what your body actually needs. Although there is far too much to talk about when it comes to conscious eating but when you focus on the internal and become conscious of what you are actually eating and why you are eating it then a whole other lifestyle change and conscious growth takes place. A wise man once told me, who happens to be my partner who is studying to be a fully qualified dietician and nutritionist says; “You should eat focusing on all the senses and check whether your stomach is full. You should never eat to change emotions. Food or drink shouldn’t be used as a tool for emotional changes. This way you become more in tuned to what your body actually needs rather than what your emotions want.” In that sense a healthy mind is a healthy body and not the other way around. I would go as far to say that conscious eating is the only way to healthy and maintainable nutrition. It has become normal to worship other people’s beauty, achievements and interests without any further thought to their inner personalities and what negative impact this has on society. I think
36

it is necessary to support and appreciate others but it is apparent that the majority of social media has become a tool for impression rather than positive impact. I dread to think if I had children born into a society whose mentality was based around the need for likes when all we really need is conscious love. Love for oneself, love for one another and love for the world in which we live. If I was to be very truthful and honest about exploration and what human beings have contributed, it is a trail of destruction and misery. Yet some are blinded and think we created the entire universe and therefore put themselves center of it above all else. All because we believe in doing and changing the universe, without doing something within ourselves, achieving within ourselves, and changing within ourselves. I am unable to conclude otherwise than say, that as long as we continue to work externally, with an external orientation, with a self-centeredness, this devastating, destructive trend towards self-destruction of humanity is inevitable. I will be the first to hold my hand up and say I became part and contributed to this part of society. It can be very difficult to understand you are part of it and even harder break free. What I’ve learnt is nothing nourishes the soul more than inner growth – to contribute beyond our selves. When you realise how significant you are not based on external factors it is then you fully appreciate that every single one of us has a calling. That calling is usually inspiring change and to genuinely help others this I ensure can bring real happiness and fulfillment, something most of humanity seem to be searching for. I hope this reaches out to you to show you the importance of “we” and I hope that together we can ignite this need for change. For more inspiration on conscious living please visit my blog at

My Model Diary Since my last diary entry lots has happened. I’ve been signed to four agencies in different cities all over the world! I am so excited about what’s to come I can hardly wait! But it wasn’t as if this happened overnight. At the beginning of my final term at University in Newcastle not much work was being thrown my way and when it was I really struggled to make any castings or jobs as Newcastle is four hours away from London and I had exams on top of that. Things were getting complicated. It seemed as though I was not having the best run of luck. When I broke up for summer I had more time to travel to London and met with Beth and Charlotte who are co owners modelling agency, Bridge Models. The meeting was brief and to be honest I didn’t know if I’d made a good enough impression for them to sign me to their agency. I really liked both girls who were young and spoke professionally and positively about their agency, which is quite new to the industry. But when I got the call from Ruth saying I had been signed I was thrilled. This meant more castings and hopefully more work! Over the next couple of weeks I saw Ruth to work on a few photos for my portfolio. We even worked with video to showcase catwalk ability and play with my character a little. This shows the client I can portray 38
a variety of different looks and poses, which is very important. I am so thankful to Ruth doing all this with me as without it I wouldn’t have been signed to these other agencies. Cheryl and Ruth’s work with me I will be eternally grateful for. They have taught me so much about how to model and the industry itself. The jobs I have gained with Bridge so far have been great. I’ll tell you about my favourite. It was set to be a long day ahead as I live in Cambridge I was travelling for just under two hours in total before I’d arrived. But it was worth it. After lunch the designer decided that our make up was going to be much wackier. I had glitter, sequins, coloured hair pieces and pink eyebrows! I looked crazy, but the results were wonderful and the whole shoot was a lot of fun. The team were a pleasure to work with as they made me feel completely at ease and had me laughing non stop. Well, what do you expect with a team who wants to give you pink eyebrows for the day?! Although I have had a fair few castings and jobs I did start to think that I wasn’t being cast for much. I didn’t let it get me down but I did ask Ruth and Cheryl as to why. They said that it was just the way
of the industry - you get some jobs and others you don’t. Also, gaining the right skills takes time and training. I kept my chin up and luckily things began to really go my way. So now I have been signed by OKAY Models in Hamburg, Germany and am being flown out this coming weekend to meet them and various clients. I am really exicted about that. I was then signed by one of the biggest modelling agencies in the world, Wilhelmina Models in New York! I was so excited when I found this out that I ran
downstairs and started jumping up and down showing the confirmation message to my best friend screaming with delight! I’m really excited about what is to come there. Not only that but I am now also represented in Austrialia with BGM Models and have my first job booked in Manilla at the end of the month for Avon! So there it is, my life over the past few months. Through EMG I am now signed in the UK, Germany, Australia and New York! An amazing time and more than anything, a wonderful learning curve. Every Model Magazine

With a very real need to de-stress and take time out it was my intention to relax. Easier said than done for a working mum! With lunch almost upon us we slightly regretted the pit stop late breakfast we had accidentally gorged on prior to arrival. But this was a relaxing break right? So let’s eat! Lunch in the dining room was a good healthy mixture of cold and hot dishes. Bursting with flavour there really is something for every palette. Whilst health and well being is clearly taken into consideration by the kitchen, there is no need to worry about going hungry or only having 1 calorie option leaf platters at this sensible spa. Proper carefully considered food for everyone. So, first potential barrier well and truly eliminated! After being shown to our room we quickly changed into fluffy white robes keen to explore the facilities. First stop for me (Bran was given no option) had to be floating in beautifully warm water in an underground candlelit pool. Not quite into relaxed mode so early on I did but wonder who lit the candles? Did the staff have to bikini up to do that as there didn’t appear to be any other option. Can I have this job...please? Next stop the rose sauna. Lightly scented and toasty warm we both began to wind down. Immediately after we plunged into the waterfall pool. Partly outside, this provides Every Model Magazine
the chance to experience warm water and sunshine in one. Along each edge there is also the option of various massage jets to soothe and relax tired muscles. I did make a slight schoolgirl error when pressing a ‘shoulder massage’ button not realising that this would appear as a jet stream in my face; #wipeout! But given the extreme hysterical reaction to witness from Bran, I was given the added benefit of ‘laughter is the best medicine’. Keen to sample everything we then visited each individually tailored room in the thermal spa. I quite enjoyed the scented room, whilst Bran sampled the ‘thought room’. That one wasn’t for me. A thought removal room would have been more my scene. Other chambers of de-stress available include the volcanic salt heat room and colourflow cave. Then the cave shower which is kind of cool. Not for Bran this one... Oblivious that she would experience thunder sound effects, she was quick to evacuate. Much to my amusement! However as a lover of thunderstorms I found this one really exhilarating. With a number of showers also available, including a tropical, side and fresh mist spray option, we could alternate warmth and stimulus to create a continual relaxing process. After a thoroughly fun and well worth it thermal experience we decided to relax in the Every Model Magazine

bay fronted windows next to the main swimming pool waterfall. With hot sun rays beating down on my face, I actually fell asleep for a while. A miracle this being for those of you who know me. Apologies to anyone forced to witness this sight however. Bran on the other hand, being of young and fit years, sampled a session in the fitness and exercise pool. Then it was treatment time. A 50 minute blissful face and back therapy massage. My beautician, Caroline, really understood what I needed to gain from the treatment and worked hard to eliminate the tension in my neck and shoulders. This was a truly relaxing and much appreciated experience for me. Followed by a delicious steak and Stilton sauce combo, my relaxation and food coma led me to bed feeling floaty and nourished. A timley albeit slightly guilty pleasure in a BBC drama to wind down to and that was us both out for the count until breakfast arrived at 8am the next day. 48

With warm weather expected we were both really keen to sample the outdoor pool area. Whilst only part heated, this beautiful part of Ragdale offers everything you could expect from a Mediterranean break without the hassle of airports or lengthy travel times. To have this in the UK is a real find and certainly something I will be going to return to. You could quite literally be anywhere sitting by the pool in the bright sunshine. Croatian born Bran wasn’t entirely convinced by the British weather scenario of occasional freezing cold cloud cover. But for me, 21 degrees is practically a heat wave. And intermittent cloud cover a welcome relief! A professional pedicure for both of us prior to lunch revealed super soft tootsie’s and sparkly toes. Another sumptuous lunch preceded a further trip to the thermal spa. A leisurely wander around the grounds en route to the beauty area, accompanied by excited screams from Bran about
the swinging outdoor chairs, worked off our meal giving us ample time for more floating around in candle lit caves and water driven shoulder massages. Bliss! Another relaxing session in the bay window and we were ready for an express beauty treatment of a hair wash and head massage to complete our stay. Checking out was stress free albeit that we were neither of us ready to leave. All in all we were both very impressed with the standards at Ragdale Hall. The facilities are both extensive and very well maintained. Cleanliness, and for me this is a big deal, was exceptional. Overall atmosphere; dreamy and peaceful. You really couldn’t ask for more. The Ragdale philiosphy is for each stay to be the choice of the guest. They really do either leave you to it or are available if you need them. This is a massive plus in my book. Spa days range from £77 through to £219. For more information or to book please visit the website www.ragdalehall.co.uk. They will be seeing me return very soon!

INTELLIGENCE

Intelligent use of the internet and social media sites can increase a person`s employment prospects and success regardless of the industry that they are in. If you are an aspiring or professional artist, knowing how to employ social media to market yourself and connect with other relevant professionals is an especially important skill to master. In regards to modelling, having the right looks and skills are no longer enough to break into the industry and advance your career as public opinion and popularity in addition to networking with the right professionals are all vital to succeeding in the industry. The same is true for several other aspiring artists such as musicians and actors where showcasing their work is important to build a fan base and hopefully get noticed. In our generation where incessant use of the internet permeates all aspects of our personal and professional life, people now have the power to determine which models are selected to appear in huge campaigns and magazine covers. Since companies are connecting more and more with costumers through social media, they have become more attentive and receptive to consumers` opinions. The younger generation of top models, such as Gigi Haddid and Kendall Jenner, has recognised the influence that public opinion has over their success and are using social media to connect with fans, build their personal brands and achieve huge contracts. There are several social media platforms that you can use to display your pictures or work on. To start with you can post your material on a few popular social media sites such as Facebook or Instagram where you can learn what posts have been best received by other professionals and how best to promote yourself. As you
learn how to market yourself, you can post on several other online platforms. If you have a significant amount of experience within the industry and would like to offer services in a more professional way, you can create your own website where you can display your pictures, videos, services and rates in a more organised manner. The quality of your content is much more important than the frequency at which you post or amount of content you share as first impressions are created within the first few moments of meeting someone, or in this case, viewing their content. If you are a model, it is essential you have a variety of good quality, professional and versatile images on your sites to be recognised as a professional. Select a strong headshot for your profile picture and keep professional images at the top of your profile so that they are seen immediately and people do not have to dig too deep to see that you are a model. Thanks to a range of professional pictures on my Facebook profile, I was scouted by a booker from an international agency and through them I secured contracts with top agencies in Europe and Asia. In addition to agents, clients may look you up prior to or after you have attended their castings and their decision to hire you or not may be influenced by your content. Not only should you have versatile professional images on your social sites, you should also display your positive traits and attitudes as clients know that the public will associate their brand with their models. If you play sports or like to exercise, or like travelling, different cultures or arts, or are raising money for charity, you should share this publically as these interests all show wonderful attributes and a positive view on life. Social media Every Model Magazine

“Avoid having pictures or statements that may harm your image.” sites should also be used to keep in touch with friends and family but keep in mind that professionals also look through your profile so avoid having pictures or statements that may harm your image. If you have pictures where you look very drunk or are nude or have profane language on your posts, I would suggest either removing this content or concealing it from the public through privacy settings that only permit your friends to view it, as you may be judged by agencies and clients based on such content. Demonstrating your positive attributes while protecting your image will likely increase your chances of being hired as brands book models who they believe will represent their brand well especially when searching for a model to be used in a large campaign. You may find it helpful to separate content that is seen by your friends and family that have no affiliation with the industry from promotional content for industry professionals to view. You can make a professional Facebook page, Twitter feed and Instagram account devoted solely to 52

professional images and posts. You can also keep one site solely for personal use while using other social media sites for work related matters. For instance, you can use Facebook, of which it`s main purpose is typically seen as being for socialising, for interacting freely with friends and family by limiting the content that is viewable to the general public, while using other social media sites such as Instagram or Twitter to promote yourself as their structures enable users to network and grow a fan base more easily. Separating your professional life from your personal life may facilitate keeping your accounts more organised to better market yourself as those in the industry can immediately see your work as opposed to becoming sidetracked by personal content. At the same time you can maintain more freedom with your choice of posts and not worry about bombarding your family and friends with promotional content. It is highly beneficial to network with other professionals in the industry, such as photographers, agencies, fashion designers, stylists, and other models to learn of modelling opportunities and be considered for future work. If you are new to the industry, you can start by adding or following reputable agencies, established models and joining online modelling
and photography groups where your profile will be more visible. Thus you will more likely be contacted by such professionals for work and projects that they deem you suitable for while also being informed of castings and job opportunities you can apply for. Networking can be especially helpful if you are new to modelling . People who are already in the industry can give you great advice such us on building your portfolio and agencies you should contact or stay clear of. Additionally, you can organise shoots if you would like to build your portfolio as you can easily find and contact good photographers, make-up and hair stylists who are also interested in building their portfolio. Another benefit of using social media to connect with and befriend other professionals is that you can support each other in a highly competitive industry. Not only can you recommend and be recommended to clients but you can also assist one another by putting the word out about each other`s work and upcoming projects. If you have secured a booking or are on your way to begin a job you should use your
“Network with other professionals in the industry.”
“Take the time to offer a genuine hello.” social media pages to share the news and create exposure for the client by posting or sharing the company`s profile and page as well as the agency that secured you the assignment. They will likely be very appreciative of your kind words and your agency will likely continue making an effort in trying to find you work and the client may consider you for future projects and recommend you to others. In addition, when someone you know is trying to spark interest in their forthcoming ventures such as a designer launching their new collection or organising a fashion event, support them by congratulating them publically and sharing their posts to help them create exposure. They will likely remember you and support your projects in the future as well as consider you for work or put you forward to clients. As a result of your selfpromoting and networking efforts, your following on social media sites will likely begin to grow. You should also connect and build relationships with fans, in addition to industry professionals, as their support and your growing popularity can improve your image. Take the time to offer a genuine hello or welcome to a new fan or follower and
engage with people when they comment on your posts or pictures. Staying positive is essential. If people post negative or harsh comments, do not take offense and reply back as this is exactly the kind of reaction they are after. The best strategy is to not pay these users any attention and simply ignore the comments and delete them if possible. Large brands look favourably upon models with a large fanbase or following as it illustrates that the model knows how to market herself well, is well received by the public and thus will be an excellent representative for their brand. Instagram, for example, is a highly popular social media site that allows you to easily network with those in the industry as well as grow a fan base. If you are in the modelling industry you can find users that are related to your line of work and engage with them by following them, liking or commenting on their photos. They will likely respond positively to you and may take an interest in your work. You can also follow a successful model who you perceive as being similar to you. For instance, if you are or aspire to be a commercial model in London, you can follow a successful Londonbased commercial model. You can observe how he/ she interacts with his/her followers and contact the
professionals that he/she communicates with as they may possibly be interested in getting to know you as well. The hashtags that you use can also help you attract more people within the industry. For work related images, you should search most popular hashtags to use to attract professionals that you believe would be interested in you. Being represented by a reputable agency is wonderful but keep in mind that no one will work harder for your success than you yourself. Therefore, make use of the internet and widely used social media sites, as they are resources that are far reaching and available to you, to promote yourself to the best of your abilities and make your career take off. If you have any questions or would like to speak further feel free to contact me via my personal Facebook: Stephanie Grao.

it’s YOUR face! Beauty features columnist Dannielle explains the difference between what actually suits your face, rather than what fashion dictates... Essentially eyebrows frame your face and can really make all the difference when it comes to your overall look. So are you wondering how you can achieve this right? A simple starting point is to define what type of brows you have. Are they plentiful, sparse, hardly any? Are they even, uneven, patchy… Whatever you have there’s a solution for you. Always aim to achieve your best brow rather than be dictated by fashion. Do not follow the crowd, choose your own style shape and colour brows for your face. Over the years from being a teenager I played with my brows. I always wanted someone else’s. Mine are very light in colour and
54
Every Model Magazine
sparse. Even though I am dark haired I had no brows! As the years passed I started to get them dyed, penciling them in and then had them tattooed! Luckily times have changed and products have progressed. For those of you with plenty of brow...get grooming! You will need the following must have items to keep theme in check; Tweezers, Brow brush, Anti bacterial soap, or sanitizer. Make sure to clean tweezers and daily beauty equipment after use. Are your tweezers sharp? If they are blunt or rusty - bin them! To dechipher the best brows for you, firstly establish what face shape you have. Is it Round, Oval, Oblong or
Square? Then take a look at the kinds of shapes you can manipulate your brows into as the images here show. Long/oblong faces suit a lower arched brow to shorten the face and a rounder brow of medium thickness. Round Faces should go for a high arched brow to create sleek style. Oval shape faces should opt for a subtle toned down brow with a slight arch. Square shape faces suit a medium thickness rounder brow. Heart shaped faces suit medium to thin brows with a low arch and a more rounded shape. Diamond shape faces have stronger features and high cheek bones suiting
softer colour tones and a nice curved brow shape. The thickness of the brow is a personal choice but also depends on what you naturally have. In general bigger eyes carry a thicker brow well and smaller eyes tend to suit thinner brows. However it’s entirely up to you as you are the designer, creator and most importantly the wearer! Just remember that you are unique. Be yourself and embrace what you are. Products recommended include the Body shop brow kit or Beautiful Brows. They really are sweat and fool proof as well as great value for money.
