f it doesn’t have a GIF, sticker meme or emoji nobody seems to understand or respond anymore! As my year of birth becomes more than just a one finger scroll away my bah humbug and dislike for change equally increases. But to be fair, I quite enjoy getting away with being grumpy. If I’m honest I do quite like a GIF! They can brighten up the monotony of social media that we are now all sentenced to maintain thus stealing hours of time our lives will never recover. Has it been a good year? For me it has been one of great and very definitely, good changes. I have always thrived on new initiatives, development and diversification. An industry such as ours depends on it. No actor, entertainer or model can rest on their laurels and expect it to simply ‘happen’ for them. We have had a really busy year at EMGM, taking a very proud part in the development of careers that have seen some great talent achieving roles and work in television, theatre, print, film and advertising. It is also very rewarding to watch

aspiring talent working so very hard to cut it in this competitive but truly exciting business. This edition of EM Magazine brings you our ‘full to bursting’ winter and Christmas Gift Guide with some truly stunning products all tried and tested by us! A couple of personal favourites include the Olverum bath oil (page 25) for what can only be described as a soak in heaven! And Lumity’s Face Oil (page 32) - absolute luxury! Hmm, both oil products... maybe my old bones are trying to tell me something... insert straight face emoji here! We talk to manager of incredible bands The Vamps & New Hope Club, the lovely Joe O’Neill. If ever there was a work ethic to aspire to, follow Joe on instagram for a master-class! Jai Ramage, coach for The Voice gives us the low down on improving and developing your vocals. We meet Miss Great Britain, Kobi-Jean Cole and winner of Face of the Hair Group Holly James. Also read about what life as a booker is like for Elizabeth at Models 1. As Christmas approaches and some of you are lucky enough to get time off to spend relaxing with your loved ones, if you need a box set binge, we highly recommend KILLING EVE. Not exactly a Christmas feel good movie, but my oh my, it will have you on the edge of your seat and eagerly awaiting a new season! I hope you like the above selfie donning my camera and saucepan hat! What do you mean a carrot? I don’t see one... insert laughing or is it a crying emoji here! Have a wonderful Christmas, put your phone down and enjoy your what matters most. The people you love. See you next year! 3

illing Eve is a character study on two lives, two women and their circumstances, homes, wants, fears and what keeps them from ending it all. It’s just that one happens to be an assassin and the other a spy,” says Phoebe WallerBridge, lead writer of the series. “If I’ve done my job right, the audience should feel equally chilled as they are excited by the determination of these women, their journeys and how drawn they are to one another.” It is the thunder of empowered women working in front of and behind the camera. Created, developed,

produced by, and starring enormously talented women in genre roles traditionally ascribed to men. Starring Sandra Oh and Jodie Comer, Killing Eve centers on two women; Eve (Oh) is a bored, whip-smart, pay-grade MI5 security officer whose deskbound job doesn’t fulfill her fantasies of being a spy. Villanelle (Comer) is a mercurial, talented killer who clings to the luxuries her violent job affords her. Based on the novels by Luke Jennings, Killing Eve follows these two women, equally obsessed with each other, as they go head to head in an epic game of cat and mouse.

For us at EM Magazine this series inspired us so much we wanted to share it will you. Jodie and Sandra’s perfomrances are an exceptional masterclass. Jodie Comer is very rapidly becoming a rising global star. She deserves every award going for this performance. She is believable, charming, terrifying, troubled, powerful, and a master of language! Who would have thought this young girl from Liverpool was also Russian, French, Italian and very definitely RP! If you act or aspire to, watch this series and learn how it can be done at the very highest level.

Sandra Oh on Eve Polastri

Sid Gentle Films, Photographer, Jason Bell

What sort of world will the audience be entering with Killing Eve? “Killing Eve follows two parallel stories that eventually intersect in numerous places. One follows Eve, who I play, and the other is the world of Villanelle, played by Jodie Comer, who is an assassin. Eve’s task is to find this assassin. It’s a unique world of the spy thriller, and a real character story between thesetwo women, and their need to find each other. Thereis a lot of wit and humor in it. Killing Eveis a real kind of a mash-up –a new voice and a new genre.” What excited you most about being involved in this project? “It was definitely working with Phoebe, and the part that she wrote which I thought was very fresh, daringly hilarious and extremely dramatic. I really, really like the mix of that, because ultimately for me it just becomes all the more relatable and more human. You know, things are funny and sad and thrilling and dangerous and absurd...I mean, that’s kind of like life and I just think actually that is more relatable than straight comedy or just straight drama.”

6

Jodie Comer on Villanelle

What drives Villanelle to do what she does? “I think what drives Villanelle is her freedom. I feel like she’s had very little freedom in her life before now. She lives in Paris in this amazing apartment and she gets a kick from doing these kills –it excites her and gives her purpose. She’s got control. She does her kills, she gets her money, she spends it on what she likes, and she has no one around her to take that from her, or tell her what to do –she has total freedom. She has very little remorse, and she’s cool with that.” Do you have anything in common with your character? “I’m scared to say yes because she’s so crazy! She likes to spend her money on clothes, and she always seems to be eating, and I’m guilty on both counts. I see her as an actress in many ways because she has so many different personas, so my way into her was to think of it as an act. She thrives off being an actress. She speaks so many languages, and often has a set costume or hair depending on her mission, just a totally different life that she morphs into.”

ow did you become a model booker?

I was looking for a full time position in fashion after I decided to take a break from styling and was offered a job as receptionist at Models 1, which I did for 10 months before being offered the role working on the Curve division. I love working on the board as it's a really exciting time to be part of such diversity within the fashion industry. Tell us a little about your own modelling career? I got scouted when I was 14 by a small agency and did a couple of small jobs for teen mags, I then continued with school and started up again when I was about 19. What is the biggest bug bear you have with aspiring models? Sometimes I think people can underestimate the time it can take to build a book and client base. You don't become a top model over night - so much time and effort goes in to nurturing and managing a persons career, its a process. Models invest in their book, but so many people think that this should be free. Why do you think that is? Portfolios really are paramount to a models career. It can be the pivotal selling point on booking a job so the images need to be to an extremely high calibre. Ultimately, it depends on the team, but partly what you're investing in is the photographers time as editing pictures can be somewhat time consuming. We don't encourage girls to test too much as clients want to see a body of work. Who do you absolutely love on Instagram at the moment? I'm inspired by all things french and am a self proclaimed Francophile! So my ultimate go to accounts on Instagram are Jeanne Damas, Sabina Socol and Lou Dillon - the epitome of the perfect Parisienne style. 8

being a BOOKER We talk to the wonderful Elizabeth at Models 1 London about her role as a booker for this prestigious agency.

Follow Elizabeth @elizabethmiles_ What advice can you give to aspiring and established models? Always, always, do your research. Be cautious of scam artists promising you the world then disappearing off with your cash (I've heard so many horror stories!). In terms of established models, I would say stay humble and try and retain a sense of humour in every situation and always be a joy to work with on shoots - the teams will always remember the models that were a dream to work with. Why is Instagram such an integral part of the industry now? Instagram is a really rapid and effective way to get a glimpse in to a models life, which more and more clients are wanting to see. Ten years ago that wasn't possible. Models were allowed to have more privacy, now its considered bizarre if you don't have an account or want to publicise your private life - kind of crazy!

What are the qualities you look for in a world class model? It's really objective, but you can't just be an attractive girl/guy when it comes to being a world class model. These models have got to where they are because they have the whole package, beauty inside and out and the personality to match the exterior. Staying appreciative too and not taking anything for granted.

Starting out as a certified master teacher in estill voice training, Jai Ramage talks to EM Magazine about professional vocal tuition. She is currently a coach for The Voice & The Voice Kids and has worked with many artists and productions during her career.

A

Vocal Coach is a practitioner employed to enhance, develop and maintain voices. I work mainly with professional singers in the worlds of pop and musical theatre. My job involves guiding them stylistically, looking after their vocal technique and keeping their voices safe. Successful singers give the impression that they are spontaneous, free, and that their musicality just appeared and falls out of their mouth with every note they sing. The reality is that ‘natural’ singers (implying that they are untrained), are a rarity and many professional singers today are coached. What the audience is often unaware of is the time singers have dedicated to practice and preparation in getting themselves to the point of mastery, often with the help and support of a Vocal Coach. Voice science is a reasonably new area of research and new findings are emerging all the time. For centuries singing has been taught based on speculation of how the voice production system works. Now, due to advances in technology, we are gaining more factual knowledge of what is actually going on in our bodies when we vocalise. Having a deeper understanding of vocal function equips the Vocal Coach with more tools and options to suggest to the singer to get the best out of them. Good technique is essential for performance but also for maintaining vocal health. With the decline of physical record sales much of pop singers revenue is generated from live performance. Rigorous touring 10

schedules often coincide with promotional appearances and interviews which can be hard on the voice. Musical theatre singers often have shows six days a week and sometimes matinees thrown in for good measure. Conditions that singers perform under are not always ideal either: travel, air conditioning, eating late, networking, the list goes on… They all put the voice under more strain. A vocal coach teaches the singer how to warm up, cool down and look after their vocal health. I like to have a long-term relationship with my singers which enables me to know their voices inside out. You then notice the changes and hear stress and tiredness before the singer does, sometimes from the first ‘hello’ they say as they walk into the rehearsal studio. Our job is to monitor vocal health and prevent vocal damage. Alongside a solid technique and a healthy voice a singer needs to have a positive psychological approach to their performances. Technique gives the singer confidence. Knowing how they are reaching those high notes is reassuring, rather than approaching them on a wing and a prayer and hoping they come out! A vocal coach helps

their singers to prepare psychologically. W

e are hearing more and more about these model/blogger hybrids in the industry. Not only is it good to have an online platform to promote yourself as a model but now some brands will actually look to your follower count before offering you the job. At the start of my modelling career I followed a couple of very successful models who were also killing the blogger game. I emailed one in particular for some advice and luckily she replied with some tips. What I realised was that it wasn’t going to hurt to put myself out there 100%! I had already started my blog which was based around body confidence. I also loved fashion and had my own sense of style. Luckily all these things fit in quite well with each other so I knew I had a good foundation to build my “online brand.” I made the jump and changed my handle from my name to @CurvyLiving. I needed something that stuck in peoples head and knew right away what I was about. I am a curvy girl living life – Curvy Living! Perfect! I found this really helped and made a big difference into building a following.

in shoots for your instagram. Of course everyone is different. For some of the lucky people their partner is a photographer which means free pics! For some they take their own pictures using tripods and for others they use photographers. I am the latter. I want to create high quality content on my feed. I did try taking my own pictures with the self-timer but it was messy! I have luckily found a photographer who lives near by and has budget friendly rates which is ideal. When I started to take my instagram seriously not only was I modelling but also working at an estate agent part time as a viewing guide. I found a job that

Working with brands as an ‘influencer’ is great exposure and also puts you on the brands radar for possible future modelling opportunities.

What you also need to be aware of is that you need to invest. You aren’t going to get brand work on instagram right away. You need to build your profile and be consistent. Brands want to see what your style is and the quality of your content. They also look at the engagement you get on your posts. A lot of brands are wising up to the fact that “micro-influencers” actually create more engagement with their followers meaning more traffic to the brand. A micro-influencer can have anywhere between 10,000 and 500,000 followers. So, just like you invest in shoots to build your model portfolio you need to invest

didn’t require too much brainpower so I could still give most of my time and energy to any modelling jobs that I booked whilst building my online platform. As my instagram continued to grow I started to collaborate with brands. It initially started with gifted product and the more I grew more opportunities came along for paid work. Hitting 10k followers is a biggie for bloggers as that gives you the ‘swipe up’ feature on your stories. And that is 13

a biggie for brands. Swipe up stories gives followers instant access to the webpage to buy that must have item. Kerching! In the midst of all the fashion and style posts I was regularly talking about body confidence. The topic of body confidence, self-acceptance and self-esteem is very important to me and led me to be involved in the ‘Be Your Own’ campaign for Be:Fit Festival. The campaign pictures were featured on the tube in London and a massive billboard! That was amazing exposure and also gave me the opportunity to meet some amazing, supportive women!

in the belief that there is so much more to achieving body confidence and happiness within yourself than just accepting your appearance or doing a few tweaks to look better. Ultimately we know that for people to be the happiest and most fulfilled versions of themselves they need to work on themselves from the inside.

Now I am currently working regularly with brands like Evans, Next and Oasis as an influencer. This has allowed me to quit the estate agent job and be a full time model/blogger! Working with brands as an ‘influencer’ is great exposure and also puts you on the brands radar for possible future modelling opportunities. One of my favourite things about being part of an online community is the sense of unity. The women I follow and support are amazing, I really learn a lot from them. I’ve met some of the nicest people doing this job and actually met one of my best friends – Laura. We met through mutual friends on instagram and clicked immediately. Laura is an Eating Disorder specialist and an all round good egg! We hosted our first event together screening the documentary Embrace (which I highly recommend you watch!) in February. Since then we have created a new venture together – Beyond Body Confidence! We are so excited to launch our new company with an event in February, which is going to be amazing! Our ethos lies 14

So, as you can see putting yourself out there can bring some surprising results! I think to gain success online you have to be yourself. Everyone has an online platform now so the only thing that will make you stand out is the fact there is only one YOU! Does blogger status help you become a model? Not entirely but it doesn’t hurt! If you have been thinking about it - give it a go. What’s the worst that could happen?!

em mag editor ruthie d catches up with band manager joe o’neill, the vamps & new hope club

16

@joema nager @theva m @newho ps peclub

17

How did The Vamps come about?

So who are you Joe and what is your job? I’m Joe O’Neill from Leeds and I’m an artist manager in the music industry. I’ve been involved in the management of various artists over the past decade but most notably The Vamps. How did you first get to work in the music industry. I was in a few pretty crappy northern indie bands during my late teens and worked in a live music venue for a while. I was found via the bands MySpace and asked to audition for a new band in London. Bizarrely I got into the band but nothing ever really happened with it. I kept in contact with the management and before long I ended up doing some work experience for them. Shortly after we had a couple of artists signed and they took me on full time.

18

We found James McVey (guitarist) on YouTube and thought he would be great as part for a new band. We found Brad on YouTube and they got on really well. The band started uploading covers and instantly got a huge response online so we knew we had something special. What do you look for in potential musicians? We are only a small company and are very selective with the projects we undertake. We definitely specialise in young guitar/pop bands so we tend to try and find talented people that would work in that setup. YouTube is a great tool for finding people but it is flooded with videos so it’s not always a quick process. There’s no set formula but some people just stand out, maybe it’s because of extraordinary talent, personality or even an interesting song choice. What is the most difficult part of being a manager and the best bit? I think the 24/7 aspect of the job is what’s toughest. It’s something that we just do naturally now

and don’t think much of it but being chained to your phone is not great when you stop to think about it. It’s great to not be chained to a desk 9-5 and be able to deal with most things from your iPhone but it also means you inevitably end up checking emails from the moment you wake up to the moment you fall asleep. It’s hard to say precisely what the best bit is but I definitely do enjoy the daily, creative energy and positivity that comes from working with music. Being involved in the songwriting process, the music videos, the live shows and all the campaign ideas can be really rewarding. Travelling the world is also an incredible part of the job and being able to see the impact the bands have on their fans is pretty powerful. What made you select each of The Vamps? James has a great voice and showed his song writing ability at a pretty young age, he also had a sensible head which we liked. Brad was doing wicked covers of cool, old-school ska songs but looked super young which was very unusual. That definitely made him stand out from the other 100 covers of the same Ed Sheeran song we had seen that week. It was evident Tris was an incredible drummer straight away and clearly had a great energy that came across on camera. Connor was very impressive on guitar and had begun putting great covers on his channel, which already had a big following. When we first met him he was very quiet but we knew once he settled in he would be perfect.

Also managed by Joe are the amazing New Hope Club, Reece Bibby, Blake Richardson and George Smith

We know you are with The Vamps in LA right now so can you bring them in on this for us and ask them a couple of questions? Haha, well I was in LA when you sent these but I’m currently writing this on our 14 hour flight to South Korea. Yeah, we know right! Anyway... moving on... question to Brad - what would you say has been your career highlight so far? “Every one of our tours! We’ve done five in five years, which is just insane, and it’s like a continuing highlight.” James - if you could have any guitar in the world... ? Gibson J200 from 1973! Connor - where are the last three countries you’ve been on tour? “Well we have just got back from our USA tour but we

started in Mexico and ended in South Korea so I guess those three. Not really sure how that worked to be honest.” Tristan - you’ve got some serious tour dates booked in. Are you playing anywhere new that you are really looking forward to next year? “We are going to India next and playing in some cities there! Exciting to see our fan base growing. Our next U.K. tour is in April/May/ June next year and it’s going to be our longest one yet. We have called it the Four Corners Tour in a bid to get to every part of the U.K. We are playing shows in places like Harrogate and Swansea for the first time as well as the usual spots like The O2 Arena in London.”

bit obvious but work hard, channel your passion into everything you do and enjoy the process. Social media is a great way to get yourself out there so use that as a tool. Find like minded people to either collaborate with, learn from or just be inspired by. You also manage the amazing New Hope Club. Tell us a bit about what’s on the agenda for them? They are three guys that just signed a joint deal with Hollywood Records (Disney) in the USA and Virgin Records in the U.K. They have been releasing bits of music over the last three years and have managed to grow a hugely dedicated following on social media. They are the ones to watch in 2019!

Fay Hill @faylan

20

How often have you described yourself as ‘talented’? Personally, never. In fact, I have creative breakdowns and wonder why people book me (not Andrea, she is super talented) to be their photographer at all. I guess I’m not alone; for all industries, particularly the creative, everything is so competitive and constantly evolving, that actually the challenging part is living up to expectation and standing out amongst the crowd. At FayAndrea, we photograph some of the UK’s most talented and beautiful young people. What astounds me about all of them is their determination and commitment. Even at such a young age, they have established a work ethic and realised in order to be successful they will need to work hard and (to an extent) sacrifice the life their peers may be used to. Their parents are equally committed to ensuring their child can sustain and fulfil what is necessary to become the next star. Financially this can be a burden, and time-wise it can be very challenging fitting in castings, after school clubs, and competitions at a weekend amongst other siblings, work, and Priced at £33.75 from the day-to-day life of aavailable parent. But somehow, they www.naturesplus.co.uk manage it because they want to. It’s the ‘want’ that is important, and pivotal when evaluating whether to invest in your child’s talent.

It’s the ‘want’ that is important, and pivotal when evaluating whether to invest in your child’s talent. Often parents start with, ‘I know I’m biased but...’ when complimenting their child. This apologetic approach is classic; no-one wants to be seen as having the ‘my child’ is best mentality, but equally, isn’t it a parent’s duty to be proud? I believe it’s of paramount importance for us to nurture and encourage our loved ones from day one- from Sons and Daughters, to siblings and friends- and in my case, even Mum and Dad. Without the support of my family, particularly my Husband encouraging me in those ‘creative breakdowns’, perhaps I wouldn’t be where I am now. Talent is an evolvement of confidence, the latter of which is created from foundations of love. The more encouragement you give to a child, the more their confidence will grow, and in turn they will learn to celebrate themselves and who they are. Discovering our inner self is the first key to finding our strengths, as well as weaknesses. Amongst the confidence boosts, we need to educate the next generation about staying humble and earning success in the right, honourable way. In short, our encouragement should create positivity, not arrogance. Children need to be aware they will meet other talented people, some of whom will excel even more than them. Teach children to learn from these individuals, to surround themselves with them- not to resent or compete with them. For the same token, there will be others who are less talented, but equally as hard working. Teach children to encourage these individuals, to fill them with the same confidence they have been. At one point I was sure I could do ‘it’ all on my own. I was so scared of losing what I had worked for that I kept the reigns to myself, but actually co-sharing a business has been the best thing for me. There is no failure in admitting you’re not a superhero. Infact, it says far more about the person that can be a team member, and value the talents of others over their own.

Listening is one of the most powerful human senses, that we often fail to use properly. Encouraging a child to be vocal and value their own opinion is as important as listening to and valuing the opinion of others. It can be very frustrating, for example, when Andrea and I are booked for a job, yet not allowed to get on and do the job we have been booked for because the parent or child is telling us what works best. So recognise who is who in an industry, and respect their position, as they will respect you. Connections and relationships are pivotal in establishing careers - the better individuals get on, the better the work will be, and the more work will be created for all in the future. Finding the next step in the creative/ showbiz industry is difficult but not unachievable. With the likes of social networking now, it’s become far easier to create your own stardom, and this is definitely a starting point not to be underestimated. However, do not label yourself an Influencer or a star just based on followers. The power of great images, a great show reel and the best vocal, acting and dance training are all pivotal in creating a profile. Everyone has to invest more than just time in a career and it’s important to keep this in mind when selecting a Photographer, acting school or agent. Entering my fourteenth year of working in the photographic industry, I feel incredibly lucky to have constantly been surrounded by such talented individuals, but never as lucky as I do now. It’s a true accomplishment to see your work appreciated by others, and equally as wonderful to be chosen for your craft. This year FayAndrea were named by the prestigious Tatler magazine as their ‘Recommended 2018 Wedding and Children’s Photographers’. Considering we are two regular women that kinda fell in to FayAndrea, we are really proud of our little business, and continue to be so grateful to all of the support we have been given. We hope our work inspires the clients we shoot and moreover, encourages women like us to find their passion and run with it. You do not have to be the best at something, just be prepared to work hard and stay humble whilst doing so.

Wishing you guys a wonderful festive season, and above all the best of health and love for 2019.

Miss Great Britain

Kobi-Jean Cole

O

n the panel of judges for Miss Great Britain this year was our very own Ruthie Deane. Supportive of UK events and the discovery of new talent, EM Magazine is always keen to meet the contestants. This year the title went to the very beautiful Kobi-Jean Cole from Bristol. At the age of 24 Kobi aspires to be an actress and presenter along with working with vulnerable people during her reign in 2018 / 2019. Having won a photo shoot with EM Magazine we caught up with Kobi over a cuppa and took a few shots of this very beautiful and down to earth lady. 36

“I finally won Miss Great Britain back in September 2018 after my third attempt of competing in the pageant. I entered in 2015, went travelling for a year and came back in 2016 placing in top 5 both years. I decided to take a year out and came back this year with a whole different state of mind. I felt totally myself and relaxed about the whole thing and I think that’s honestly what won it for me. In my year out I tried to focus on myself and got back into acting as this has always been a passion of mine as I have studied film, media, performing arts and theatre. I turned 24 this month so really want to focus this year on my career and feel that winning Miss Great Britain has been the perfect way to encourage

me to focus all of my time on it. I will also advocating CPR awareness and have become an ambassador for the Matt Fiddes Hero campaign. A fun fact about me is that I am naturally blonde! My eyebrows have always made me feel that I was really destined to be a brunette! Don’t you think? My name is from a place in Japan called Kobe. At the time my dad was supposed to be working there but didn’t as my mum went into labour with me! Had he have gone to work he would have been involved in a earthquake! So my parents believe that I saved him and called me Kobi!” You can follow Kobi on instagram at @missgreatbritain18_19 and the Miss Great Britain team at @missbg_official

Stay motivated during the colder months!

As the colder months draw in and longer nights stretch out, it’s easy to lose motivation. This loss of motivation can have an effect on your overall wellbeing. While it’s tempting to spend an evening curled up warm on the sofa, our experts offer their advice on how to banish that all too familiar sluggish feeling and how to stay motivated in the colder months - so you can take charge of your busy schedule this Winter!

Take time to get out and about, we LOVE this backpack. See page 30.

Banish that sluggish feeling… When the weather gets colder, it is our natural instinct to stay warm by eating comforting, starchy foods. This can have an effect on our gut and digestion as these rich foods can make us feel sluggish and bloated. Nutritionist at Natures Plus Martina Della Vedova tells us how their GI Natural powder can help keep your gut functioning effectively to avoid that winter slump feeling. “This formula combines glutamine that promotes mucosal lining growth and repair, with acid and bile resistant probiotics that provide healthy flora, whole food enzymes that optimize digestion and reduce discomfort whilst, ginger, turmeric and serrapeptase work in synergy to protect the gut from inflammation and boost gastro-intestinal health. 42 ”

Eat a balanced diet to keep your energy levels up!

Lo ok after your Joints and Bones…

The cold weather and lack of sunshine often leaves us feeling tired and unmotivated. Ensure you are eating a balanced and healthy diet in order to provide your body with the correct nutrients it needs to help keep you going through the colder months. This includes fresh vegetables and fruit, fresh or tinned fish, free-range eggs, unprocessed meats, unroasted nuts and seeds, whole grains such as oats and brown rice, beans and pulses and dairy products. Ultimately this means limiting your intake of high-sugar foods, refined foods and most things that come in a packet with a long list of ingredients.

You may be able to relate when someone says they can feel the cold right through to their bones, as many people with joint problems find their symptoms flare-up at this time of year. Luckily, Sense have designed a superfood supplement for joint and bone health, available in capsule form, £14.99 or as a powder £21.99, www.boots.com which can be added to your favourite smoothies, juices or stirred into food. Designed to offer optimum support to the modern lifestyle. Try stirring Sense for Joint and Bone into your breakfast, so you can help care for your joints and bones all season long and boost enegery levels too!

Work out with friends… Chilly weather can definitely knock your motivation down but falling off the wagon with your exercise routine can dampen your motivation even further. When it’s cold sometimes the last thing we want to do is put on our gym clothes and go for a run - but the endorphins from exercise can help give you that extra boost. Try working out with your friends or joining an online community for support. Nutritionist and Fitness Instructor Cassandra Barns explains,,“being with others who are going through a similar fitness journey helps keep you motivated and accountable. If it’s not possible to exercise with your friends directly, then try an online workout programme that has a social media group that you can join, so you can share your progress and challenges with others.”

Managing the cold & flu season… Our increasingly busy and hectic lifestyles often mean our health can take a hit in the way of colds and flus. If we’re feeling a bit rubbish and more susceptible to illness our motivation can feel zapped. Dr. Marilyn Glenville explains how getting enough sleep can help. “Sleep is important for your health as it gives your body time to recharge its batteries and repair cells. When you don’t get enough or you have a restless night you can feel irritable, lack concentration and can become more vulnerable to infections as your body does not have the strength to fight its own battles.” Make sure you get enough sleep to keep colds and flus at bay so you can stay motivated and ready for anything.

Top Tip: “Magnesium is known as ‘nature’s tranquiliser’ and is needed to relax our muscles and nerves, which helps us to fall into a peaceful sleep,” explains Nutritionist Cassandra Barns. Cassandra recommends taking KalmAssure Magnesium Powder by Nature’s Plus (£24.50, www. naturesplus.com). This supplement provides high-quality magnesium in a orange flavoured drink mix, helping your body to unwind and get in enough sleep.

Daily Multi Vitamins available from www.naturepluscouk priced at £27.85

Today most children have at one stage of their life expressed a desire to be on stage or a model walking the cat walks and wearing gorgeous clothes. WHY?

words by Michelle Wilson-Stimson

does your mother know? 44

T

hey want to be those kids, they look cool, seem rich and therefore must be popular! The ones on TV, in magazines, social media... When I was a teenager, I desperately wanted to model. I dragged my dad to open days, photo calls, model events and begged him to pay the ridiculous fees scammers were charging – he didn’t, thankfully, but I had no idea how to become a model. Nowadays children know the best agents and how to apply, they understand fashion and that modelling isn’t just looking pretty. My daughter is thirteen. For the last year she has wanted to be an actress and model. Our location isn’t perfect for the majority of the London based agencies so representation hasn’t been easy. She’s a quirky girl with an English rose look, big blue eyes and long baby blonde hair, but she doesn’t think she’s pretty. However she knows that modelling isn’t about just being pretty it’s far more than that. I love that confidence in her, I think she’s beautiful and pretty, she says I’m biased. Earlier this year she promptly gave me a list of the best agents and photographers she would like to work with, (I wish I was that switched on when I was climbling by way through my modelling career). She knows what she wants and she was going for it. We applied to some agents in London but sadly turned down over and over because of our location…too far away! It’s heart-breaking for a parent to see their child disappointed. But I had to be strong for her and to coach her through those let downs and no go’s! So that’s what I did, I worked with her and explained how casting works, what agents are looking for and helped keep her head high regardless of let downs. She grew in confidence and has now developed a great skin for not being accepted for a job, whereas before I would see a sad face she now understands she didn’t fit what they were looking for and skips off, still happy Mia. So we had nailed the wellbeing of Mia – she gets it, she understands it, she loves being in front of the camera and giving her best ‘Blue Steel’ or jumping around for casting agents and photographers. She is well adjusted to this industry. Her wellbeing was the most important thing for me to

With love, Michelle Wilson-Stimson Model Mum to Mia Wilson aged 13

Photographer Michelle Wilson-Stimon

work on with her, I never want her to try to be something else, lose weight or feel depressed. So what about being the parent of a child who wants to do this? What’s that like? Well I can tell you it’s a tough one. If you want to support your son or daughter you need to be able to drop everything you are doing within 24 hours’ notice to get them to a new casting, or be able to take three days off next week because she or he has been booked for a job. If you work full time, do not have flexibility or the ability to call a relative to chaperone your child then you need to help your child understand they will never be able to model or act. Without you or a chaperone your child will not be able to fit into the short notice busy life of the industry. So what about the cost? There is aways an investment by you for items that are needed to advertise your child including an ongoing cost of book updates with photographers. To begin a career in modelling you need to be able to put some money into paying a mix of photographers with a variance between studio and location work in order to develop a nice mixed portfolio. Once bookings come in you can add to the portfolio with work images but you cannot attend a casting without showing what your son or daughter is capable of once in front of a camera. You also need patience, I’ve met many mums and dads over the years who become impatient on set, grumpy when their child is dropped or not even selected in the first place. The biggest gripe is by those parents who feel their child isn’t getting enough work and they blame the agent. I’ve seen this so many times. It’s very rarely the agents fault, it’s just your child’s face isn’t what they need right now, the fashion may be for a large gap in teeth child with curly ginger hair and your blonde daughter with perfect teeth and a chocolate box look isn’t in right now. So you need a huge amount of patience. So in a nutshell what the parent needs is Money, Time and Patience. Oh and did I mention you need to know London as we as a cabbie. You will be called to an array of strange locations, studios and streets, the majority in London so if you are not good with a map or not the adventurous type to explore than you will struggle to support your child. It’s a funny industry, it’s hard, fast and can either build someone up or make them feel really low. But with guidance and understanding of what you are getting into, these issues can be avoided. You need to do your research and know what to expect for your child to succeed.

It’s all in the PREPARATION words by

Hayley Atkinson

I

t’s not just about what you are wearing for a photoshoot, you may have the coolest clothes to wear but your skin needs to be at its best too. I have done makeup on many clients whether it be on set or for weddings and I can instantly tell if they have been taking care of their skin just by looking at it. Makeup just won’t sit right on dry flaky dehydrated skin. Take the time to really prep the skin in advance with a good cleanser, toner, moistoriser and exfoliant. Be aware not to use anything new on your skin within a week of the photoshoot to avoid possible reactions. Drink plenty of water! You should be drinking plenty of water all the time but definitely weeks before a shoot. The difference it will make to your skin is astonishing. Arrive on set with zero makeup on your face. It is really frustrating when a client arrives

with a full on made up face. For one it takes a lot longer to remove the makeup and two its so difficult to get it all off and nobody wants old bits of mascara left on for their photos. There is no need to wear makeup to a photoshoot when the makeup artist will be doing it again anyway. False eyelashes are a no no! I know it’s all the rage at the moment and they may look great but they don’t in professional photos as they close the eyes up and make them look smaller. It is also tricky for makeup application as these often get in the way.

a tight timeframe and will just carry on to get it done on time however we don’t want you feeling uncomfortable so speak up and let us know! It’s ok to state if you have a particular reaction to a certain product however you won’t always be able to have a say on what your makeup and hair will look like. On a photoshoot makeup artists have set instructions on makeup and hair and it won’t always to be to your taste. The modelling agency and photographer know what they are doing so put your trust in them and don’t rant at the makeup artist!! Come prepared with a straw! That moment when you’ve just finished the makeup and then they go and take a swig of a drink (nonalcoholic obviously) and it all runs down the chin… There goes the flawless face. Sometimes it can be uncomfortable when you’re having your makeup done especially when someone else has to get so close to your eyes. If you feel uncomfortable or your eyes are watering, its ok to say “can I have a minute for my eyes to adjust”. Often makeup artists have

If you know that your hair is going to be styled please don’t straighten it at home. The mood board will be a good indicator of how your hair will styled by the makeup artist. A lot of the time they want to see your natural hair. I would say 99% of the time there won’t be a photo with poker straight hair. Don’t worry if your hair is naturally like that though. Less is definitely more when it comes to makeup, It’s so important to emphasize the features that you have in a natural way. Don’t feel insecure about your natural skin or features, embrace them!
