Dear

Why is it important to have a good self-image and how can you change this if you are not rating as good at the moment?

he chances are by simply being human, self-image and listen to that voice telling you your self-image may not be all you you’re not enough it shows from what you think it is. Did you know you could put out there. It’s the same solution to both have the wrong perception of yourself even if on problems. Ask yourself honestly are you talking the outside you give off an aura of confidence, back to that loud negative voice or are you beauty and other types of ‘good stuff ’! Your self- managed by it? Do you give it your power? If image will catch up with you despite the façade you are not talking back, well you need to start if you do not get it into shape and the cracks will doing so. Begin to talk nicely to yourself, be start to show as mine did. intentional and do this from today. If you spoke I used to wonder about good looking to your friends the way you speak to yourself, celebrities, gracing our screens with charisma you wouldn’t have any friends would you? By and style and why things often went wrong for the way, admitting you talk to yourself is not them after a short period following their first madness, I believe we all do it. It’s ok. appearance. I thought The solution is a simple at first they ticked all My experience tells me it’s much one. Love yourself, put the boxes. This goes for better to be tr ue to yourself and your arms around yourself, the models, comedians have a beautiful relationship work f rom the inside out. and folk simply in with yourself, talk gently good jobs who looked and nicely to yourself. Tell like they had a few quid in the bank and had yourself what you would tell your friends if it all boxed off. For those who stopped shining they shared their negative thoughts with you. as it would be unfair to say all do, I doubt their Thought is said to be the first level of creation, insides were matching their outsides. For those the second being the words we speak followed who grow and go from success to more success, by action. Actions are words in motion and if I were a betting lady I would put my money on expression of our thoughts. This process them having done a good inside job! produces feelings and good feelings start with First impressions are important but not to good thoughts and words. the detriment of longevity, quality and peace Everything you see in your life is a result of of mind. EMG Abby has been on our books for over nearly two years now. During her time with us we have secured her two great agency signings. Abby is a wonderful girl and we love her to bits here at EMG. Her drive and ambition is to be admired. We wanted the girl herself to tell you her recent news. So, go for it Abby...

ell I have some very exciting news I would love to share. Since graduating from drama school and treading the boards I decided the theatre life was not meant for me. Since then I have been perfecting my modelling ability and working on my poses under the guidance of EMG. But obviously starting out as a new model I need to allow myself to grow and learn. So, I made sure I kept my options open for other opportunities to work alongside my modelling and I’ve hit the jackpot! I am a presenter on the first ever UK Country Music News TV Show. It’s called The Kings Says Country Show and I am so thrilled to be a part of it. When I say I am a huge country music fan, I mean I am a HUGE fan! I spent a few years of my childhood growing up in Houston, Texas and from then on I have always kept a small part of the south in my heart. I’m

just a southern gal who likes wearing cowboy boots and sippin’ on sweet tea! I recently attended the C2C Festival at The O2 in March and dragged my boyfriend along. Three days of country music with some amazing headliners from the states including Carrie Underwood, Miranda Lambert, Sam Hunt and Kacey Musgraves. I was in heaven! Hopefully next year I’ll be able to go along with the tv show and interview some of the performers. We just filmed our first episode and had the amazing Logan Brill join us all the way from Nashville, Tennessee. She was lovely and even performed for us. So make sure you check out ‘The King Says Country Show’ on Keep it Country – Thursday nights at 6pm and Saturday at 9pm. EM What are you up to these days and what are you working on now? Jorgie I had a great time on Hollyoaks so after leaving I'm like any other jobbing actor, going to auditions every day which is really exciting. EM acting?

What is next for you in terms of

EM

What's in your makeup bag?

Jorgie Concealer, mascara and about 12 lipsticks. I carry a lot of colours as I love to change my look throughout the day. I love Benefit, their Mascara and Proactiv+ Concealer and for lipstick I will always go for a hig her end brand like Tom Ford or Charlotte Tilbury. When it comes to foundation I love Armani Luminous. Not only do I love how it looks in my handbag but I feel like if you can then it’s fine to spend a lot of money on expensive makeup, as it’s for your face! You want it to stay in place all day and night.

EM

How do you stay in shape?

Jorgie I hate going to the gym even though I have a cool gym - David Lloyd. I go to classes like spin as I don’t know what to do, or how to use the machines to maximum potential in the gym. I would always choose a dance class if possible as I’ve danced all my life. I also love hot yoga which makes me feel amazing. EM Do you have a healthy eating regime; is there a typical daily diet you like to follow?

Jorgie Are you being served is my main focus at the moment, with lots of modelling and panel shows thrown in. It’s an exciting one-off for BBC1 and I star alongside Jason Watkins, John Challis, Mat Horne and Sherrie Hewson. If it goes well then hopefully they will make it into a series. I’m also headlining my first ever panto at the amazing Liverpool Empire this Christmas. I’m playing Snow White and I can’t wait! I’m also heading out to LA over the Summer as I have management over there too so they like to get me out meeting people.

Jorgie I have to admit do eat a lot of cake! On a typical day for breakfast I love cereal and loading up porridge with apple, blueberries, fruit and crunchy granola! For lunch you can’t beat a ham & cheese sandwich on white bread! When I’m feeling posh I’ ll have soup and a sandwich. For dinner I usually eat out or my friends will cook for me! My mate Helen made me a chicken dinner the other night and it was amazing! EM If you could change one part of your body, what would it be and why? Jorgie I used to work in Greece as an entertainer before I was an actress and one evening during a performance I fell and really hurt my ankle and it’s n ever really got better. I’ve been left with one swollen fat ankle so I would love to change that.

EM designer?

Do you have a favourite shop/

Jorgie I love Topshop and Rag & Bone in terms of mainstream. However, my favorite thing is finding things nobody knows about like Nasty Girl in America. I’m always getting compliments! EM What has been your biggest fashion faux pas? Jorgie If I ever wore yellow I think it would be a fashion faux pas as it would clash with my hair. Anything that looks harsh against my hair is a big no-no. I’ve definitely learnt from that mistake and to avoid it at all costs now. EM What has been your biggest beauty blunder? Jorgie When I first discovered glue in hair extensions. I was getting ready for a date and was really keen to impress. I glued extensions in the front of my head down the parting which was an absolute disaster. EM What is the most money you've ever spent on an item of clothing? Jorgie A Mulberry handbag in New York which was over £1,000. My mum doesn’t even know how much I paid for that. EM

Who is your celebrity crush?

Jorgie Jake Gyllenhaal. I recently saw him in Southpaw and thought he was beautiful. EM We really admire your open and honest admission of skin problems. Tell us a bit more about that. Jorgie I was about 14 when my skin broke out and I think it must have been linked to hormones. My skin felt tight and swollen, and bumpy and greasy. EM What were your breakouts like? What do you think caused them? Jorgie My breakouts were huge on my chin and I called them ‘The Alps’. I think it was hormones that caused the breakouts

as I was at that age where my body was changing. EM How did having spots affect you? Jorgie At that time I thought nobody would ever fancy me or get with me because of my skin.I just didn’t want anyone to look right at me. I would avoid eye contact with people, it made me feel so shy, I always thought people would be looking at my skin and not me. And I blush a lot! I’m a blusher. EM Were you ever bullied about your skin? Jorgie A lot of times people would say ‘ewww you have really spotty skin’ which would make me feel really self conscious. Maybe it was a case of making themselves feels better by commenting on my appearance. EM What did you try using to clear up your skin problems? Jorgie I tried everything. Seeing the doctor, taking antibiotics, using Sudocrème, I've even popped spots with needles which is a complete no no and used perfume and peroxide to dry spots out. EM Was anyone helping you find a solution for your skin problems? Jorgie People at Hollyoaks would help as it was filmed in HD and it was better for the spots not to show. The makeup ladies came up with some ideas including Tea Tree treatments. Someone on the production team was amazing and said that they’ d do whatever it took to make my skin looking right. EM What are your top five ‘can’t live without’ beauty products? Jorgie Proactiv+ without a doubt, it’s my daily skincare regime. I love to get my lashes done in Urban Calm in Liverpool. Fake Tan it has to be Vita Liberata, hair - gold fever extensions and always get my hair done with Paul Edmonds in London, I love them doing my hair. EM 17

PROFILE

What does Emma Laird, a native of Chesterfield, UK, have in common with Ellie Goulding, Natalie Portman and Jessica Chastain? They are all sizzling, sexy vegans! Emma beat out other entrants to become one of four female finalists in PETA's Hottest Vegan Competition 2016. Emma is a twenty year old model and an activist who spends her free time campaigning for animal rights and environmental causes. Being vegan is "not just for my health, it's for the animals and the environment", she says. "It's the only sustainable and compassionate/ethical diet." Laird is starting a YouTube channel, and her favourite vegan foods are dates and sweet potatoes. "Vegans are, on average, slimmer and healthier and have more energy than their meat-eating peers – plus, there's nothing hotter than compassion", says PETA Director Mimi Bekhechi. "All the finalists are already winners because they eat delicious, healthy foods that don't harm a hair, feather or fin on an animal's body."

We caught up with Emma and asked her about her lifestyle, vegan diet and how she stays in tip top model condition. EM Hey Emma. Great to talk to you. Tell us, for how long have you been a model and who are you currently represented by? Emma I’ve been modelling full-time about two years this summer. My mother agency is Models 1 in London. I’m also represented by Ford (New York and Paris), Bravo in Tokyo, Priscilla’s in Sydney and D management in Milan.

“I will never understand why it’s considered strange to eat more than two bananas but normal to drink cow’s milk.”

EM What would say has been the highlight of your career so far?

EM 18

Emma Probably going to Sydney, not because I did any particularly amazing shoots there, but just because I went straight from Tokyo to Sydney and it felt like a holiday! I actually had days off after working constantly in Japan and I was staying right on Bondi Beach. I can’t wait to go back!

Emma

EM So we know being a vegan is something you are passionate about. Can you tell us how this benefits your working life as a model?

I didn’t grow up vegan. I just

went through a really tough time with eating. I’m lucky I have such a supportive agency, they really understand that models are actually real, young girls and they never pressured me with weight or measurements. But sometimes just being a model is enough because you do have to be slim. A friend showed me a famous YouTuber (Freelee the banana girl) and she changed my life. Since then I started to eat more food and realised you don’t have to starve yourself to be skinny. EM Tricky one this, one are their any instances, such as medical implications, that would prevent you from encouraging a vegan diet to a young model? Emma Never. You can get everything you need from a vegan diet. In particular, I’d recommend this lifestyle to models who struggle with weight because you can actually afford to eat an abundance of foods and stay slim. I’d never give medical advice because I’m not a doctor and if models are coming from eating disorders they may need to increase things like fat intake (which you can still get from plant-based foods). But I’d never discourage veganism because it’s the healthiest diet. EM Are their any physical side effects that you feel are both positive and negative in line with your chosen diet? Emma Positives for me are that I can actually eat a lot of food and not feel guilty about the foods I’m eating because they make me feel good. Food has a direct effect on the way you feel! It also means I can keep my measurements low whilst nourishing my body and getting everything I need without having to harm animals. The only negative is that when you’re at a shoot (or anywhere really) people will sometimes look at you if you have a bag full of bananas as a meal. But that’s just about having the confidence to explain your diet or to stand your ground and not be bothered when people watch you eating a big meal. Eat if you’re hungry!! I will never understand why it’s considered

EM 20

strange to eat more than two bananas but normal to drink cow’s milk. EM

What is your favourite meal?

Emma Definitely fruit. In particular dates and bananas. Fruit has this bad rep for sugar but it’s some of the best foods we can eat. Or sweet potatoes. I could live off of them! EM What are your top tips for models to stay fit and healthy? Emma Definitely eat carbs – but that’s not to say live off of bread. Carbs from plants like potatoes, fruit, vegetables. Get the majority of your calories from whole foods. I personally follow a high-carb, low-fat diet and feel the best on this lifestyle. Also, exercise. Not every day, I probably don’t do five times a week but I always walk. It’s lowimpact and makes me feel happy and gives me a chance to unwind and appreciate my surrounding. I also love biking! It doesn’t feel like a workout. EM Can you tell us what you think makes a good model? Emma A good personality. Looks are important, but if you leave a shoot with a bad impression people won’t want to rebook you. Also don’t be afraid to wear weird clothes if that’s your style. You don’t HAVE to buy Dior and Chanel to be successful, just be yourself. EM And finally, if there is one thing you could wish for, what would it be? Emma That I could have a pet cow. Or that humans/the media would realise how important our oceans actually are and how much of a state they are in because of overfishing, the shark fin industry, oil and plastic. We are literally killing ourselves and other species off when there is renewable energy and plants to eat.

Looks are “ important, but

if you leave a shoot with a bad impression people won’t want to rebook you.

Using a good shampoo and conditioner, avoiding over styling and using a wide toothed comb are just some of the ways to avoid split ends. That’s according to the experts at online hair and beauty retailer Hairtrade.com who have revealed the secrets to putting a stop to split ends. Investing in a good shampoo and conditioner is a must as is using a heat protect spray if you can’t live without your hairdryer and straighteners. Other tricks like avoid towel drying and patting your hair dry instead are also listed, as is combing with a wide toothed comb. Experts have also picked out the products which will help keep split ends at bay.

Shampoo & Conditioner Investing in a good shampoo and conditioner is a must if you want great looking hair. Cheap supermarket alternatives will not have the same effect as a salon professional shampoo.

Use a wide-toothed comb Always comb wet hair from the ends up with a wide-toothed comb, rather than combing from the roots with a brush or finetooth comb. Be really gentle to prevent damage to your ends, then work the comb up to the roots.

with fine hair may be more likely to experience split ends than someone with thicker, stronger, naturallyglossier tresses. “However, despite genetics, there is plenty that we do can to prevent split ends. Proper hair care is the secret to keeping ends healthy and fresh long after our last haircut.” Here are the site’s top tips for preventing split ends:

Avoid Towel Drying We’ve all done it – stepped out of the shower and towel dried our hair. Towel drying can be very damaging. Instead, press a clean towel over your wet hair to remove some moisture.

Minimum heat styling If you’re straightening your hair each day with a blow dryer and flat iron, it may be damaged all over, including the ends. If you can’t live without your straighteners, invest in thermal protective sprays which are applied before blow drying. They create a barrier which makes it harder for heat to damage hair. The site’s in-house blogger Maja Tisma tells us, “As our hair grows out the fragile tips of each strand become exposed to wear and tear. An array of factors contribute to split ends, including heat styling, brushing, overall hair condition, the length of your hair, and even genetics.

This Leave-In Protein Spray by Gold Class Hair can be used on wet or dry hair to control frizz and as a de-tangler, it’s an essential beauty bag treat. Ideal for all hair types, providing an immediate boost to hair condition and ease of care; the Protein Spray restores the pH balance of your hair & scalp, adds moisture and shine. Used as a daily feed to pamper your hair or hair extensions, it also protects from wind or heat drying. Also available by Gold Class Hair are their amazing range of hair extensions. They tell us that, “Getting into a good hair care routine with the right products will prolong the life of the hair extensions as well as maintaining the integrity and optimum health of the client’s own hair. The key to the Gold Class hair care range is the moisturising aspect of each product rehydrating the extensions and preventing dry ends and hair breakage. This is in two stages; firstly hydrating the hair to allow it to function and maintain it’s elasticity allowing styling of the hair. The second stage is to lock the moisture in to enhance the brilliance and lustre of the hair.” Beautiful before and after, check Laura out in the award winning Inanch Salon, Great Portland Street, London after having her Gold Class Hair professionally fitted. words by Fay L Hill

O This will be the last column I write as a twentysomething before entering a new decade of my life.

EM 34

NCE I WAS 20 YEARS OLD… I celebrated the end of my teens in London surrounded by a few college friends. I didn’t know who I was. I had prospects of a good career but I wasn’t fully satisfied with it. I wasn’t settled in a relationship or totally content with the people in my life. I needed to change, but for that night, I was lost in the euphoria of a Smirnoff Ice and Oasis. Fast forward almost ten years and here I am, pending my 30th birthday trip to Abu Dhabi with the two wonders of my world- my Husband and baby girlI’m a business owner, a home owner, and in short, proud of the woman I’ve become. But how did I get here? What have I learned along the way that if I could go back now to that young woman in the bar, I would relay…?

Never just settle for second best in anything you do. If it doesn’t set your world alight then find something that does.

Travel

Being a home bird I struggled with being out of my comfort zone, and then at 21 I was given an opportunity to work in Thailand for three weeks. This trip was as much of a turning point in my career, as it was for me as a person. It not only ignited my passion for travelling but moreover made me appreciate the peace that comes from spending time alone, and learning about yourself. I soon started a ‘Travel Bucket List’, and by the age of 26 had ticked off every country on it- some returning to more than once. My advice to all is to travel. I believe by learning about other cultures it stops the fear that can lead to ignorance. By tasting other food, we learn to develop our taste buds. But ultimately, by experiencing something different, we grow as people, becoming more interesting and having something different to share.

Believe in marriage

We live in a generation where marriage has lost its appeal- or certainly its sanctity. Nowadays people strangely seem more prepared to have a child with someone than get married. I am so pro marriage and totally believe it is more than ‘just a piece of paper’. Having someone to rely on, someone to call yours is worth more than I can explain, and if I can recommend one thing for you, it is to find your one true love, marry them and shout from the rooftops how proud you are to be a Mr or Mrs!

Never just settle

“Some people are settling down, some people are settling and some people refuse to settle for anything less than butterflies.” I am a massive quote lover. And this is one of my all-time favourites.

Read it over and over. Let it sink in and then use it as a mantra for life. Never just settle for second best in anything you do. If it doesn’t set your world alight then find something that does. I have watched people over the years just settle in relationships or a job because it’s easier than stepping outside of their comfort zone. Forget that. Be courageous and remember, life is too short to waste. Plus, you’re in your twenties, you still have time to rectify any ‘awkward’ decisions!

Experience is education

Now this may appear a little flippant of me since I didn’t complete my degree (I still remember my Dad’s face when I told him I was leaving University!) but over the years (particularly in my industry) I’ve come to realise some of the most successful people do not necessarily have the best education. I am not by any means suggesting you do not go study and give it your all. What I am saying is, never underestimate the power of experience. If you are pursuing your studies, which is absolutely commendable, then try to get a work experience role alongside it in your chosen subject. It’s all very well having the paper work to say, you’re fabulous but if you cannot understand the dayto-day workings of your career outside of the text book, I’m afraid you may be at a disadvantage to the ones who do.

Worrying ruins you Although I still haven’t mastered the art of controlling my own worries, I really am determined to not spend as much of my thirties sweating about the small stuff. It’s in me to be highly strung, too sensitive and paranoid, but I’m getting better. I realise now life always has a funny way of working itself out and to trust the timing of my life.

EM 35

If something doesn’t feel right, it isn’t. Trust your instinct, ditch the bad vibes, and move on!

Appreciate your health Although I’m a big believer in having a little of what you like, I also realise how crucial my health is. After having my baby, I watched in awe as my body repaired itself and it still blows my mind every day that I created a human being. For a machine to be able to do that, means it is pretty powerful and we need to respect the bodies we have been given both physically and spiritually. Start now. Look after yourself and love the skin you’re in. These are your prime years, don’t spend them in a body you’re unhappy with.

Family is everything A family does not necessarily have to be the biological circuit you are born in to but just people that love you unconditionally. To have this is something more special and beautiful than anything else. Value them. Prioritise them. Respect them. You’ll need your family one day, believe me.

Negativity is toxic I have no time for negative energy and neither should you. Surround yourself with positivity and positive people. If something doesn’t feel right, it isn’t. Trust your instinct, ditch the bad vibes, and move on!

Be nice

Ever admired a stranger’s dress but not wanted to compliment them for fear of appearing odd? Forget that, compliment them. Ever refrained from telling someone you love them because you’ve already told them that day? Forget that, tell them. The kinder, the

True friends

Time stands still with true friendsgoing a few weeks without speaking shouldn’t change that. As you grow, you’ll realise your schedule is busier and you have less and less time for anything. This is when true friends shine. I am genuinely lucky to have a group of beautiful people in my life that I know will be there when I need them (and vice versa), but who also allow me to live my life without the pressure of ‘guilt’ texts to say, I haven’t paid them enough attention that week. Don’t be that friend. Be happy for your friends. Encourage your friends. And support them always.

Work hard

It’s that simple. We live in a society that is based on materialism. If you want nice things in this life, be prepared to work for it. But apply this ethic to every element of your life from maintaining a relationship with yourselves and loved ones to wanting the finer things in life. I realise the more success I’ve had, the harder I’ve had to work for it. So that’s it- my twenties journey is over, and of course I’m left wondering what my next decade holds, but I’m also aware of my final lesson learned… Whilst, it’s great to consider the future, it’s also important not to get so caught up in It- and the past- that you forget the present. So that’s my goal, live for today because as I’m realising time goes so quickly and all your left with are memories- I better get on and make some more fabulous ones!

more loving, the less selfless, and the more considerate you are as a person, the better you will feel. Be prepared your kindness will be taken advantage of but in the long run, you will prevail.
