so what is life like for an acting graduate? we talk to georgie morna-arkle about her eduction and preparing to step into the big wide world as a professional actor. our front cover and feature shoot for this edition took place at the stunning stapleford park Hotel, leicestershire.

The Acting

Graduate @mornaarkle

You have been studying at the University of Northampton. What course was this and can you tell us a bit about it?

Have you always known that acting was the career for you? Yes and no. From a very young age I would perform without realising it. Me and my sister used to put on little plays for my parents from time to time, but I didn’t realise what I was doing meant something. I was just playing and having fun! I enjoyed performing in plays at school but I didn’t realise how much I loved it until I was twelve years old, when I didn’t get a part in the school play… I was devastated. And that was the thing that made me realise that acting is what I have always wanted to do. ‘I want to be an actor’ and that hasn’t changed since. Photographer Robert Viglasky

I did the BA (hons) acting degree. It’s a three year course that covers a plethora of skills in voice, movement and actor methodologies. The course at the University of Northampton trains actors the same way that drama schools train actors with an average of thirty contact hours a week. All the teachers have had or are in the acting and performing industry and many of them also work in drama schools. The first two years of the course you learn all the tools you need as an actor and the third year you put all those skills into practise along with preparing for the industry. One of the things that makes this course so special is that it has Estill Accreditation. This is a huge deal as there are only eight institutions in the entire world that has been given this acknowledgement. It teaches the mechanics of the voice and how to use your voice effectively along with maintaining good vocal health. I have learnt so much by training at the University of Northampton not only about my craft but also about myself. 5

“We learn a great deal from our history and I find it so fascinating to see how much the world has changed over time and no matter how far back in the past we go, humans haven’t changed.” Photography by Ruthie Deane Assisted by Nigel Hunter HMU Hayley Atkinson Location, Stapleford Park

Our cover shoot this edition is inspired by the Dickensian classic, A Christmas Carol, which we know you have appeared in yourself. Are period dramas something you would like to be part of?

catches my eye. That humans have the ability to convincingly move and act in such a way that is so alien and unnatural for us. I find it captivating. It makes me think ‘I want to play something like that!’ Who inspires you professionally? The person who inspires me most actor wise is Jim Carrey. Being a shy kid growing up I looked up to Jim’s energy, free spirit and confidence. I feel he always performs in the present and doesn’t let anything hold him back. He believes in himself. I find this so inspiring. Self belief is integral for an actor as we can get caught up in self doubt at times. He has helped me find freedom within my work and he is a good reminder when I get trapped in self doubt. What is the most difficult element of acting for you?

Yes! We learn a great deal from our history and I find it so fascinating to see how much the world has changed over time and no matter how far back in the past we go, humans haven’t changed. We have always had strengths and weaknesses, experienced success and failure. We have always felt love and pain. Only the scenery has changed. Thats why we connect with period dramas so much because they always have something to say. That’s why I’d love to be in a period drama. What would be your ultimate role? I have loved horror since I was about twelve / thirteen years old and I think it would be really cool to play a scary ghost or a creature of some kind. There is something about the movement aspect that really

Self doubt. ‘Am I good enough?’ ‘Am I doing a good enough job?’ This used to be a huge problem of mine and it would really hinder my work and creativity. After training I have now got to a place where I can perform and just live in the moment the best I can. To be playful without judging myself. But it isn’t easy to get there or to stay there. Doubt likes to visit me from time to time. Auditions are the scariest part for me as I haven’t had a huge amount of experience with them yet, so it’s easy for doubt for tag along too. So I would say that self doubt is the most difficult element of acting for me, but it doesn’t stop me from loving what I do. What was your first ever performance? I think it was when I was maybe four or five. I played a yellow cat in a school play. I only have a snapshot memory or me performing it so I don’t really remember it. I do remember the fact it made me feel happy though. 7

Do you have any tips for aspiring actors about how to get into the industry? My first tip is that ‘no’ does not mean ‘never’. If you audition for something and you don’t get the part, it doesn’t mean you are not good enough, it means you are not what they are looking for at the moment, but that doesn’t mean they will not hire you in the future. Take ‘no’ as a ‘no for now’. My biggest tip would be to not take anything personally. I am lucky in the fact that I haven’t really been too sensitive to criticism when it comes to my own work. It fuels me. By working on criticism I know I am heading in the right direction, but for some it is a hard hurdle to get over. It’s natural to take things to heart so don’t beat your self up if you are hurt by rejection or criticism. Nobody is invisible to negative feedback all of the time. So my tip is to find your own way to deal with criticism and rejection. Find a way to use those things to your advantage, so that if you are knocked down, you know how to get back up again. Finally just be yourself. Don’t try to be the person you think potential colleagues want you to be because they don’t want you to do that. They just want you to be you and you’ll feel better in yourself for it.

3. Collaboration. Team work is key to creating good working relationships. Listen and communicate with your co-workers. Every single person involved in the project is important. Respect them and respect yourself. What are you working on at the moment? I am currently working as an ensemble member for the play ‘Dutchman’ directed by Kaitlin Argeaux. It has a strong focus on race, gender and status and holds a very important message. It is being performed at Tristan Bates Theatre this October for Black History Month. Do you have any exciting projects in the pipeline? I do! During the Christmas season I will be playing the title role of Dick Whittington with Looking Glass Theatre. It is a touring production that will be going round Northamptonshire schools and village halls. There are forty venues all together and I can’t wait to jump on stage and fill the audience with fun and joy!

What would you say are the top three elements to nailing a casting?

If you had to create an acting mantra what would it be?

1. Believability. The actor has to be able to play the character with truth and authenticity. The audience needs to see a person and not an actor performing. 2.Preparation. You can never be too prepared. Research the companies you will be auditioning for, find out how you connect with them and the project. Have some character ideas up your sleeve. But most importantly aim to arrive early. Leave time for delays. Don’t be late. You don’t want to make a bad impression before you have even entered the room.

It would be something like ‘Jump out of your comfort zone and allow yourself to grow. If you lock yourself in that safe place there is nowhere to go’. Our cover shoot theme this edition has been inspired by a Christmas Carol. You can catch a special and unique adaptation of the Charles Dickens novel on the BBC over the festive period. Written by Steven Knight, directed by Nick Murphy and produced by Julian Stevens. https://www.bbc.co.uk/ mediacentre/latestnews/2019/christmas-carol

The EM Guide on how to

self-tape

As a busy agency EMG Management receives daily requests from casting teams and directors for Self Tapes. So what is one of these and how best should you put one together?

S

elf taping has become more popular of late which we see as a huge plus for the industry. Not only does this allow casting teams and clients the opportunity to see talent in an animated format almost immediately, but it further enables those based literally anywhere a chance they might not have had years ago. So we are all for it! So what do you need to self tape? A video camera - if you have one yes, but only if you know how to use it and have the time to upload and format it correctly. You will also definitely need 10

a computer with an internet connection for this option. We recommend using your smart-phone. It’s quicker, easier and providing you do everything correctly can give more than adequate results. Remember this is a self tape NOT the actual film or project you may ultimately appear in! You will need a good light source available. This does not have to be professional lighting. A well lit room (natural light is always our preferred option). The light source should be in front of you and not in shot. Don’t sit with a window behind you as this will create a silhouette effect which

is not what you want. You should also aim for a clear well lit and uncluttered background, preferably a plain wall. No distractions are key for a successful

“Be sure to film in landscape, not portrait!” self tape. You want the viewer to see YOU and your skill, not your siblings, a pile of laundry or your neighbours alpaca! Well you know, it happens!

Words by Ruthie Deane Photo by Sam McGhee

When you are filming on a phone, be aware that to maximise the audio quality you must be as close to the phone as you can. Ensure that background noise is kept to a minimum and that the camera is at eye-level. Turn off any appliances in the house that may make a noise. Unless the script requires it perhaps don’t use the word ‘Alexa’ during your audition! Washing machines, other peoples phones etc, make sure they are off! Filming from too low down or high above is irritating for the viewer and does not allow an accurate view of you and your talent.

Securing your smartphone in a strong position is also really useful

11

Be sure to film in landscape, not portrait! This means you phone must be on it’s side and not straight up as you would perhaps normally use it. We always recommend that you run your self tape past your agent first. Not all agents will agree with this, so check with them as to how they operate. In our opinion your agent is there to guide and critique you. Make sure you take their advice and re-take your self tape so you have the absolute best you can to present as your audition. Check if your agent has a preference to sending tapes on your behalf or if they prefer you to send them directly. ALWAYS send self tapes to the letter of how they have been requested. If asked to save the tape in a specific way - DO IT. There are so many variables as to why requests are specifically made and if you don’t follow them this could be the difference between being cast and not. It’s all in the detail! Before you start filming please learn your lines and rehearse. Read any instructions that you may have been sent, thoroughly. Get a friend to read in the other lines if necessary (reader). Make sure your clothing is appropriate for the character but it isn’t necessary to be in full costume. That can be fun, but distracting. A self tape is about your skill and performance not how fantastic your outfit is. But by the same token, please do make an effort! Clean, ironed clothes and a smart appearance. Be professional always! Only use props that are essential to the performance. Your eye line should be close to the camera as they want to see both sides of your face. If you’re using a reader, make sure they aren’t too loud and don’t over power you. It is best to position the camera 12

on a stand of some description rather than asking the reader to hold it. The camera should remain still throughout. This also helps with audio if the reader is positioned further away than you and not close to the camera source. Don’t go too far from the camera and frame in a mid-close shot unless requested otherwise (chest to top of head). Sit or stand depending on what feels comfortable for you and the scene. Don’t over think it! Don’t do too many takes - If you can’t get it in 3 takes, take some time out, then try again. Run it past your agent or manager after your first take to gain some input from them. It is pointless trying three takes if something you could have been told on take one absolutely needs to be changed. Generally speaking self tapes should be labelled with your name first, then the project title and scene along with your agency name. Every request is specific to the job so please follow these instructions exactly. Only send one take, unless told otherwise. You and your agent should decide which one this is. It is not the job of a casting team to spend hours deciding what your best work is! When complete you or your agent can send it via www.wetransfer.com or a downloadable Vimeo private link. Never upload self tapes to YouTube unless requested to do so. Be mindful that the role you are casting for hasn’t been released yet and will undoubtedly contain confidential material. Most importantly, enjoy the experience. Even if you don’t get the role your self tape is for, it WILL be seen by influential industry professionals!

“If you’re using a reader, make sure they aren’t too loud and don’t over power you.”

So back in January starting the year out with the #beyourown campaign we have followed Abby’s journey to inspire others to love who they are. Regular appearances on ITV’s Lorraine sees Abby showcasing all the latest trends and must haves as one of the ITV teams regular faces. Her collaboration with Laura Phelan @phelanbelle and @bodyimagemovement sharing their personal stories has seen so many people be inspired, motivated and driven to live a positive way of life. We salute you Abby for your continued campaign for self belief and acceptance. Working alongside brands including Panache, Very, Evans and more recently Marks and Spencer have seen Abby promoting these iconic brands across the

globe alongside her own ethos of body positivity. What a winning combination! Back in May we saw Abby involved in events such as @befitlondon where she has given live talks about body confidence to inspire others. This has led to her

In June we saw Abby celebrate with @curvykate for their 10th birthday by riding around London in an open top bus, in the rain, in her underwear! Images were seen in the national press following this campaign for beauty with curves and as we write this Abby is just back from a shoot on the beaches of Mallorca for another up and coming Curvy Kate Campaign.

Thank you for being a part of our day to day lives and smiles. We can’t wait to be involved in your 2020 journey!

We have also seen Abby appear in the pages of the Simply Be Magazine this year, You Magazine in September and of course in EM Magazine for our annual edition. Which frankly wouldn’t be what it is without lovely Abby! One of our absolute favourites this year was Abby’s post singing with her dad on August 1st. I mean... tear jerking stuff! Who could want anything more? Singing with your dad who accompanies you on the piano (and very well may we say Daddy Abby) in their idyllic home wearing cute clothes surrounded by horses and fluffy labradors! The bare necessities indeed! We’ve watched this a gazillion times. If you haven’t seen it yet then scroll down her instagram to check it out as it is totally worth it. S

o you want to make a recording for your casting CV? If you haven’t been in a studio or heard yourself sing then this may be a handy reference for you if you intend or need to have a professional voice recording. As a engineer I have worked within the audio and video industry for over thirty years and throughout this time enjoyed a wide spectrum of challenges all over the world, generally at the noisy end of rock bands. This has enabled me to include my passion for music and turn an amateur interest into a successful and rewarding career. A first ever voice recording can be quite daunting for some people. You will probably stand in front of a microphone with strange shaped acoustic baffle, bits of sponge glued to a metal frame in a half moon shape. Or you may be plonked in a vocal booth, a small room within a room. This equipment is designed to isolate you from any unwanted noises. We only really want to record your voice and not the street outside. Cables will probably be near your feet and you will be asked to wear a pair of headphones. There will be a music stand beside you for a copy of your lyrics and a pencil for notes (no pun intended).

recording

audio Words & image by

Nigel @nigelhunter9642 Hunter

You will hear your backing track in your headphones and be asked to sing against it. If you haven’t heard your own voice like this before it can be a bit odd. Our voices never sound like we think they do. Be prepared to listen to yourself and don’t be afraid to tell the engineer what you would like to hear during your performance. Its no good complaining that you couldn’t hear yourself or that the backing tracks were too loud after the event. One of the many jobs of an engineer is to make sure you can hear everything you need at a level you are happy with which in turn should make the session an enjoyable experience, and the performance will be by default a better one. 19

If you cannot hear the backing track or your own voice just let the engineer know. When you are comfortable with the audio balance of you, your recorded voice and the backing track hopefully you will relax more and the process will flow well. The producer/engineer will often ask you to stop or re-do a line in the song. This could be for many reasons ranging from pitch issues, phrasing or breathing. In some cases it is due to unwanted noise such as the mic stand being hit by over exuberant dancing. Try not to touch anything when you are singing for this reason. Microphones are very sensitive and will pick up all unwanted noises. Great lengths are undertaken to eradicate this. In rare moments it may be a technical fault that calls a temporary halt to proceedings. Computer glitches, equipment fails or even, on very rare occasions obviously, mistakes by the production team. It is always best to go with the flow, these things happen. Don’t be too precious… everybody makes mistakes! Learn your song as there is no substitute for being prepared. I have never heard anybody say “yeah it was OK, but I was a bit over prepared.” Often artists arrive at the studio not having learned the piece they are about to record. It shows. The music will never flow, and phrasing will be a fight. Breathing in the right place is much harder without prior rehearsal. This really falls under the heading of singing lessons which I highly recommend before committing to a voice recording. It’s amazing when you are in a new situation how easy it is to forget to breathe in the right places during your performance. Keep practicing. It may be worth transposing up and down to perhaps fit your voice. Try it, you never know as sometimes the best results come from experimenting. Do keep an eye on your timing too. The better you know the piece, the easier it will be to experiment with different styles and keys. 20

“Microphones are ver y sensitive and will pick up all unwanted noises.”

Prior to the recording it is essential to eat and sleep properly. Try to avoid dairy products the day before the session. Cheese, milk and chocolate assist in the manufacture of mucus. It is probably best to not drink fizzy water either. Also avoid any really cold drinks as they will affect your vocal chords by making the throat muscles contract. Again not good for pitch. Gently warm your voice and your body. Perhaps not in the way often portrayed, loud scales are not the best place to start. Try some deep breaths to warm your throat beforehand. Loosen the chest muscles. Your singing teacher has hopefully taught you the importance of this. When people are not used to the process they tend to tense up and pitch and breathing are much more difficult. Try and get used to singing to a click if the music allows. Keeping time will make for a good result. It actually makes editing (drop ins, more about that later) quicker and more accurate, sounding like the song was recorded in one take. It is an odd discipline but honestly worth the rehearsal time. The term,’ drop in’ is used when multiple takes of your song are recorded. Rather than starting at the beginning every time there is a mistake or need to rerun. The technique is to sing along with the line or so before the mistake and the engineer will record the new vocal part and replace the old one. When all the parts have been sung and repaired the engineer will edit them together to make one seamless recording. The result is a song that sounds like it was all sung in one go or take.

Photo by Leo Wieling on Unsplash

There is no substitute for practice and preparation. Learn as much as you can before your recording session and you will definitely end up with a much more professional showcase for your talent. 21

I have found following a dream path can be very testing indeed. When I decided to give up my well paid job to work for myself as a Life Coach I didn’t realise the sacrifices I would have to make. You see I was a lover of nice things and experiences, I shopped until I dropped. I ate in nice restaurants and I liked the security of knowing all of my bills were covered too. I soon learned that I would have to get used to not eating out and visiting the fancy boutiques and I would have to get comfortable in not knowing where my next penny was coming from. I didn’t know from month to month if I would make the mortgage payment. This meant not seeing certain friends anymore and of course then the ‘FOMO’ feelings would hit me. The ‘Fear of missing out’! It all felt rather unfair, I started to feel sorry for myself, I resented others who appeared to be doing well because of course we all buy right into the stories they tell you on Social Media. Now here I was, with a desire to help people grow their self belief and confidence through ‘Optimistic’ life coaching whilst living a rather pessimistic life myself, stressing and even thinking of giving the whole idea up and getting a secure job. Not really a good advert for me? So I had to start practicing what I preached – ‘OPTIMISM! I don’t have the space to cover all but here are 3 steps you can take quite easily. 20

CONNECT WITH YOUR

Optimist words by life coach Maria Ann Lynch

1

Each morning set your mind up to be Optimistic. The Pessimist gets up early and if you buy into the fearful chat he/she has to dish out you will find it hard to get back on track. Seek out your morning welcome to yourself. Mirror work can be miraculous. As soon as you get up look in the mirror and say hello to yourself. Wish yourself an Optimistic day, ask your Optimist to stay close to you. Use your own words, just ensure those words are kind and gentle.

T R

t

2

Take a few minutes to breathe. This really helps us to connect with our Optimism, remember your body is not separate from your mind. Help them to meet and get into agreement with one another. I have followed the ‘Wim Hof ‘ method and found it helps me to focus on my breathing and whilst doing that I am not letting in any negative thoughts. It’s so simple and doesn’t take up too much of your time. While sitting in a comfortable place, take 30 quick deep breaths, inhaling through your nose and exhaling through your mouth. Then, take a deep breath and exhale; hold until you need to breathe in. Inhale again, as deep as you can and hold it for 10 seconds. Repeat as many times as you can. Both of these steps help to create a mental defence against the Pessimist. The Pessimist is the voice that will tell you lies and have you believing you’re not going to receive opportunities. These steps begin with ‘Each Morning’. There can be no days off with this. I do this in the same way that I brush my teeth, so feelings do not come into it. You may feel grumpy and tired some mornings but you wouldn’t leave the house without brushing your teeth so just add these to your morning routine. You do have the time, get up a little earlier if needs be. The Pessimist will not disappear but these activities will help to reduce and manage the negativity.

3

Get off social Media! Ok, you don’t need to get off it completely. It has some great value however the Pessimist is sneaky and will work through this channel. Do you ever look at others on social media and get angry because they appear to be doing so well and wonder why it’s not happening for you? This doesn’t help you and social media can help people to hide the truth too. Your relationship with Social media may need some tweaks. Ask yourself honestly ‘Am I just trying to distract myself? You may be at risk of feeding your mind more lies which will not help your Optimism. Try to limit the times you connect here. If you are a regular visitor, may be start with only looking at your phones at a certain time of the day. This really helped to reduce my negative thinking and again made room for The Optimist to get through. Today I believe a sacrifice is a step toward something greater, it no longer feels unfair. Sometimes you have to give up to go up. Self belief and faith are key to seeing your dreams become your reality. As with most things in life ‘Faith without action’ is useless. Having said that the action doesn’t have to be onerous, you simply need to take a few small steps to connect with the Optimist each day. I believe these small steps have helped me to grow self belief and faith and I believe they will help you too however this isn’t a microwave process. It takes time and perseverance but if practiced daily you will start to see your dreams become your reality.

International harpist

@eleanorstrings

Ele anor T urner is an international harpist, composer , pr od ucer and member of folk band R ana gri. EM Ma g a zine talks to her abo u t how she bec a me a pr ofessional artist and what it takes to maintain a c areer in the competitive business of music. 38

What instrument did you first learn to play? I played a bit of piano first because my older sister Annabel had started piano and I loved copying her. I also tried violin and cello in group lessons at school and didn’t really take to either. I remember I was always getting on at my parents about learning every instrument under the sun, but they didn’t and couldn’t indulge every whim and I remember when I was begging to learn the bassoon, they drew the line! By that time the harp had already arrived though. Why the harp? My mum is 100% behind this one! We are Scottish by heritage and she had always loved the sound of the clarsach, the traditional Scottish harp which is a little smaller than the massive ‘concert harp’ you see in orchestras. She also loved watching the Marx Brothers films with her dad, so the harp had lots of positive memories. Mum is a very

spontaneous, free-spirited person and one day she set off on the train to central London, asked around and found a harp shop to hire one from! When did you first know you wanted to be a professional musician? I got through to the finals of a national competition for young musicians, Audi Junior Musician. It was at the Queen Elizabeth Hall in London with a professional orchestra and my favourite conductor at the time, Daniel Harding. It was also broadcast live on Classic Fm! I knew that if I could do that, I could do anything. How did you first get out into the professional world? Following on from competitions which I kept doing at

international level until I was nearly thirty, I made up shows and wrote music. Whenever I could work out how to get paid for this or obtain funding to do it, it felt great. A lot of the time, my passion for music is still a private labour of love and the behind the scenes work always outweighs the performances, always has and always will. I have had a vision for creating multi level, multi genre works in which I would collaborate with musicians, dancers, artists and designers to create much further reaching and diverse art and live shows. So in 2003 I founded my own record label, Arts In Fusion. Over the years I have picked up a variety of amazing colleagues from all around the world and my favourite vibe is getting together with people, sharing a meal, talking about life and making music. It’s pretty far from the standard classical music model of everything being functional and structured, but entirely ‘manmade’ and that side of music has never been part of real classical music, it’s just been constructed around it to make it elite. I’m very keen on stripping all that nonsense away and sharing music across genres.

“I’m ver y keen on stripping all that nonsense away and sharing music across genres.”

What is the hardest part about being a self employed artist? Not everyone shares your vision! And most people think you have choice and glamour, when a lot of it is so essential, gritty and driven by a mixture of deep rooted creative desire mingled with the need to put food on the table and keep up with bills. So, any scenario when the expectation and the reality are wildly different is always a challenge.

39

And the best bit? Sharing music and life with great people you never thought you’d be lucky enough to meet. Where have you played that gave you a buzz and is there anywhere you haven’t that you would love to play? When I got recommended by another musician to record with Jonny Greenwood (Radiohead bassist and epic composer) and I got to tell him, in the kitchen, about how I painstaking notated their OK Computer album when I was about 15, because I was so obsessed with that sound. You put a lot of passion into the visual element of your performance. Is this something you have practiced? No, I practice really simple movements and making my gestures as economical as possible. When I perform, some kind of flow happens which I think comes from being lucky enough to have ridden horses as a child, a love of dance and just the sheer thrill of the music really! What would you say has been the highlight of your career so far? Performing a concerto in New Orleans with my idol and mentor Deborah Henson-Conant And does any low point spring to mind?

40

Sleeping in the car in Amsterdam with a note on the window saying “please wake me up, I couldn’t pay the parking fee and I cannot afford a fine!” Ironically, I had just performed the amazing Ginastera Concerto with full

symphony orchestra behind me and won two major international awards earlier that evening. I’ve come to embrace the duality of our existence! Do you enjoy the recording process as much as playing live? No, but I find it productive and fascinating. Working with imaginative and talented producers such as Cassell the Beatmaker (Akala, The Streets, Plan B) Chris Webb at the Friary Studios (Deacon, Musgo, Michael Jablonka) and Edan Feldman-Vazan (Tertia May, Subculture Sage) is both inspiring and comforting and I always come away satisfied. Working with classical producers can be amazing too - when I record with Voces8, they are already so tight but someone like Adrian Peacock can really hone it into exactly the right sound world and direct a huge group of musicians so no time is wasted. Who or what has been your biggest influence as an artist? Björk, without a doubt. If you could offer any advice to aspiring musicians what would it be? Follow the sounds you love and remember that you can never do too much practice. What are your current and future plans? I have lots of exciting groups such as 4 Girls 4 Harps, (self explanatory!) Performing with Ranagrí my folk band. Tāla Tarang (harp and tabla with Mendi Singh), co-writing with a number of artists on the UK rap and hiphop scene, The Brightness (a new four piece headed by singer Clara Sanabras with a very international feel), electronic gesture-controlled music based around the harp and writing music for nature documentaries. 41

hen she was a baby Amy

was diagnosed with a heart condition which resulted in life saving surgery at just seven months of age. At four months she was diagnosed with a hole in her heart between two major arteries. This is called patent ductus arteriosus (PDA) a hole between her aorta and pulmonary artery that causes too much blood to be delivered to the lungs. If left untreated, PDA can lead to permanent damage to the heart and lungs and can become life threatening. She had become ill and was taken into hospital on Christmas day and spent more than a week on life support in intensive care.

Amy Lee

Mum Jennie went through what can only be described as the most horrific time of her life watching her baby girl hooked up to life support machines. She regularly speaks of the incredible team at Evelina Hospital, London for saving her daughter’s life and for taking such good care of them both during this traumatic time. In recent months Amy has seen some significant press coverage about her story to inspire others. Dr Aaron Bell, consultant paediatric cardiologist at Evelina London, said, “Amy was pretty sick when she arrived at hospital and her heart was becoming enlarged, but the surgery was a success. It’s wonderful to see how well Amy is doing. She is a great example of how our lifesaving treatment is helping children to go on and live a healthy life.” When we first met Amy at EMG we absolutely fell for her. She has such a unique and magnetic personality. Her love of being on camera is evident and has also been significant in her progress and development. After more recently being diagnosed with autism, Amy struggles with a number of issues which have impacted on her life. She loves anything to do with the camera, fashion and acting. Being a part of the model and talent industry has genuinely been another life line for this little lady. Boosting confidence, allowing her an outlet to express herself in a way she enjoys and to feel part of something.

“At just four months she was diagnosed with a hole in her heart.” Amongst her list of credits Amy has starred in adverts for two major supermarkets and made her debut at New York Fashion Week last year followed by London Fashion Week. She has done the same this year too. Well done Amy, we are immensely proud of you! as you can imagine amy and her mum are avid supporters of evelina london. since 1869, they have been saving lives, improving health and inspiring better futures. 150 years ago, evelina london was born out of love, when baron ferdinand de rothschild founded the hospital in memory of his wife, evelina. to find out more about them and what you could do to make a difference visit them at www.evelinalondon.nhs.uk 43

Professional hair and makeup artist Hayley Atkinson brings you her top gift ideas for healthy winter skin

Winter SKIN must haves...

@hayleymua2828

T

he best way to get hydrated skin is to DRINK WATER! Yes, you heard it, no amount of expensive moisturisers can hydrate your skin like water can. Get your 8 glasses in each day and your whole body will thank you for it. For some motivation why not try a new water bottle like this one from Ion 8. Its leak proof and BPA free! 46

Hyaluronic acid is a great serum to use for hydration. Even if your skin is oily, your skin still needs hydration. Hyaluronic acid attracts up to 1000 times its weight in water which means it attracts water deep into the layers of your skin, helping it to look plump and soft. The Ordinary have a brilliant serum which is a fraction of the price of most serums and just as affective. You can get this from Cultbeauty. co.uk for just ÂŁ5.90. It is super important to thoroughly cleanse your skin with a good cleanser at any time of year but to ramp it up to a super cleansed face, this silicone facial cleansing

brush by the award-winning brand Magn!tone will give you a deep cleanse and leave your skin radiant and soft. It uses 8000 micro-sonic pulsations per minute to clean out pores and is much more effective than your hands. It’s a small compact device which makes it easy to travel with. This retails for £40 on Magn!tone London website. Also, a great addition to your skincare regimen is a cleansing cloth to remove makeup if the facial brush is not for you, Magn!tone also do this 100% bamboo microfibre cleansing cloth £20 for a pack or 2. Brush Works also do a great one for £3.49. If makeup, SPF and daily grime is not removed properly it can leave a build-up of dirt on your face which clogs pores and can lead to breakouts. Due to the lack of sun we get in the UK in Winter, we very often aren’t getting enough Vitamin D. Vitamin D is the sunshine vitamin and is a great mood booster. That’s why we feel happier when the sun is out. For this reason many people are deficient in vitamin D in colder climates. I always supplement with vitamin D but if you are taking a good multi vitamin which includes Vitamin D then this is will have you covered. This antioxidant complex by Natures Plus, Age Loss includes Vitamin D and many other beneficial vitamins. This costs £47.50 from Revital.co.uk. Please consult your GP before commencing any supplements.

Winter always brings about chapped and dry hands due to the cold weather. To help with this, it’s always a good idea to carry around a good hand cream especially this one by Palmer’s Coconut Formula. It retails for £2.49 for 60g from Boots UK.

and Rover Burghley Horse Trials (LRBHT) launched an exciting search back in the summer of 2019, looking for a man and woman to become the Face of Burghley and star in their 2020 marketing campaign. The competition was run in conjunction with our Editor Ruthie Deane who also sat on the judging panel. After attending the annual event from childhood Ruthie was delighted to be involved. “I love Burghley, and being a local girl it has always been a much loved part of my year. I am honoured to have been asked.” After selecting a shortlist of entrants who were invited to a judging event on Thursday August 22nd at The George 50

Hotel, Stamford the judges were asked to look for someone who encapsulates the spirit of the event and all it offers. After a very successful day the winners chosen were Morgan Ford Osborne, pictured above left, Hannah Allen, right (with baby Harry) and Chris Almond, middle. Also pictured above is gorgeous white labrador retriever very aptly named ‘Burghley’ and his beautiful amber friend ‘Purdey’. Part of the winning prize package included a fabulous photoshoot at the 2019 LRBHT. Blessed with warm weather everyone involved had a tremendous time enjoying everything the event has to offer. the event itself and feeling the buzz and style that is this incredible annual experience. As well as starring in next year’s LRBHT marketing campaign, the winners of the competition also received a prize package which included items from Fairfax & Favor, HiHo Silver Jewellery, Pol Roger champagne and professional photographs courtesy of Ruthie Deane. Pictured above from left to right are winners Hannah, Morgan and Chris. Both ladies are wearing some gorgeous jewellery by @hihosilveruk, their blouses (above) were provided by @hollandcooperclothing along with pink

jacket and cape (far left) and boots by @fairfaxandfavor. A big thanks must go to the lovely Sam Westcott and Carole Pendle who took care of everyone from start to finish. Also to Gerards Hair Studio, Stamford for providing hair and makeup for the winners. Other prize sponsors included @stamfordpride and event organisers @lrbht_official. After the success of this year’s search we very much hope to see another one at the 2020 Land Rover Burghley Horse Trials event. Keep an eye out on our social media for updates. Maybe next year this could be YOU, and who knows where that may lead?

Former Miss Univer se GB A nna Burdz y brings us her top be au t y tips. 52

@annamariaburdzy

Stop touching your face, stay hydrated & always take your makeup off!

“Skin is not a tough armour. Its soft and easily broken.” I often get questions about how I maintain my skin, what products I use and any secret tips I may have. I’ll never forget at one engagement, a girl came up to me and said ‘oh your skin actually is good, I thought it was airbrushed on IG’ *eye roll*. But hey, I get it. Skin can be difficult. I am not a skin expert and have never suffered from serious acne, but getting to a point where I don’t have to worry about my skin has been a long journey where I have picked up tips along the way, not just from dermatologists, but through trial and error of my own.

1. Don’t touch your face! 9 times out of 10, when people are asking me about skin, they are simultaneously touching their face. The germs on your hands that you have picked up from someone’s keyboard, the tube, money etc are being transferred to your face. This dirt will cause breakouts! When I was at school and university I noticed that I would rest my chin on my hand which resulted in spots popping up in that area. Whenever I am now at a laptop I avoid doing that. Hard at first but it becomes a habit. 2. Don’t pop spots! Don’t pick or anger them. They will go in peace if left alone. The skin on your face is delicate and by popping spots you are not only irritating and breaking it, you are forcing bacteria deeper into your follicles, which makes blemishes worse. The area gets even worse and it can actually scar your skin. 3. Drink water! We are basically more evolved houseplants, we need lots of water for a variety of health reasons. The skin is the largest organ in the human body.Made up of cells, your skin will become dry and prone to wrinkles if you don’t hydrate. 53

4. Eat a healthy diet. Life is about

balance. When my diet goes off the rails, I really do notice my skin reflecting that. More spots appear and my skin gets drier. As soon as I get back on track I notice my skin glowing. Some people have issues with certain foods, for example dairy or gluten, which can cause more breakouts. It’s good to be aware and note what you eat or drink around times of bad skin. They say you are what you eat and this is true for your skin as well.

5. Avoid tanning your face. It took me a while to listen to this advice but I am so glad that I did. All dermatologists will tell you this. As well as avoiding damage to your skin, it’s good to pre-empt old age guys!

makeup, wash your face. Removing dirt means less chance of spots! 7. Use good quality makeup, brushes and products. Good quality doesn’t mean expensive! I use No.7 skincare from Boots which is super affordable and always on offer at 3 for 2. It consistently wins awards and there are different ranges for different ages. Don’t be tricked into spending lots of money on big brands unless it is a really good product for your needs.

8. Wash your makeup brushes/ sponges regularly, along with your pillowcase! We don’t see the dirt and bacteria on these things, but they are there. 9. In my opinion, less is more. We do not need to use twenty products on our skin every morning and evening to have good skin. I use the Nivea Men’s Aftershave Balm. This is a life hack by Kylie Jenner I’m so grateful for! One bottle costs around £5 and again, note the price difference between products for men and for women… I am a strong believer in doing as little to your skin on the outside as possible, let it breathe, let it be natural instead of a night-time routine piling layers and layers on top of it.

“What works for me, or for your friend, may not work for you.”

6. Always take your makeup off. This is so important and I am just as shocked every time when I see someone going to sleep in makeup. Make sure you remove all of it and wash your face after the makeup wipes/ removers. My mum’s friend, who has great skin, washes her face daily with regular soap. I tried this and never looked back. It may sound odd because it isn’t a regime of 9 big brand products, but I have noticed my skin is so much cleaner and less prone to spots. Whatever you use, just make sure you wash and clean your face every day, in the mornings and especially the evenings. Even if you aren’t wearing 54

10. Check the ingredients of your products. Do your research! Speak to brands about your specific skin needs and find the right ones for you. What works for me, or for your friend, may not work for you. Good luck!
