what do YOU think... Thousands of people have signed a petition calling for a controversial weight loss advertisement to be pulled, as Katie Hopkins slammed those complaining about the posters as 'chubsters'. The bright yellow advert for Protein World has been put up in a number of London Underground stations and features a model in a bikini with the question: 'A re you beach body ready?'. But the campaign, which promotes the brand's weight loss collection, has attracted the ire of many social media users and body image campaigners, with some of the posters even being defaced.

When Lily Rose Depp stepped out on the red carpet at the Chanel Salzburg show earlier this month, everyone sat up and took note. Who is this girl? And how is she that beautiful?! Well, she's Johnny Depp and Vanessa Paradis' striking daughter, obviously. And now, the 15-year-old has offiially hit the bigtime, because she's just done her first ever modelling shoot for Oyster Magazine. Shot by photographer Dana Boulos, the shoot sees the doe-eyed beauty sporting a canvas wide-brimmed bonnet hat and a denim shirt as she poses for gorgeous close-ups in a sunny garden. She's one of the most recognisable faces in the fashion industry thanks to her mesmerising beauty and enviable figure. But ahead of her appearance on Australia's Next Top Model, Alessandra Ambrosio has admitted that working the camera lens didn't always come easy to the modern day supermodel. Alessandra, 34, will no doubt have some pearls of wisdom for the 12 young ladies vying for the reality show crown. The Brazilian Glamazon told the Sunday Telegraph that her first turn in front of the camera was as an innocent and very inexperienced 14-year-old. ‘I had zero clue,’ she said. ‘In my first shoots, people would tell me to have attitude. I didn’t know what that meant.’ Attitude and beauty aside, the LA-based runway star told the publication that above anything else, personality is actually an important factor in the overall model package. mini model 2015 THE FINAL

After over six months of scouring the country for potential child models, EMG finally managed to whittle down the huge number of applicants to just twenty worthy finalists. Male and female mini models ranging from age 3 through to 12 all took to the catwalk at the mini model 2015 final. Held at the Great Northern Hotel, Peterborough on May 17th, the finalists walked their walk in front of an esteemed panel of industry professionals. Images on these two pages taken by Ruthie Deane. Winners Lara and Jaidon proudly

After months of scouting, organising and preparation the final of mini model 2015 took place at The Great Northern Hotel, Peterborough. With our twenty lucky finalists ready to take to the catwalk the EMG team put together a mini show for supporting friends and family. All a little nervous to begin with, each mini model was asked to walk up and down the catwalk in front of the crew. They took to it with ease and before we knew it were taking it upon themselves to practice together at the same time as forming new friendships and having fun. This was wonderful to see. The aim of the model search is always to encourage camaraderie at the same time as learning new skills, and of course having a great time. We think that all involved achieved all of these things. With the majority of parents and guests enjoying the facilities at our host venue informal interviews took place by Bonnie & Betty and EMG director Cheryl Hughes, with each of the mini model finalists. Once complete the audience took their seats and the show began. Hosted by EMG model Frankie Spooner each mini model was asked a question on stage. They all did remarkably well to complete a mini catwalk routine and speak to a live audience and we are very proud of each and every one of them.

The all important decision as to our winners came after a painstakingly difficult decision made by the judges. With the standard so high, this really was not an easy call to make. Before the winners were announced two special awards were given. The mini model we decided demonstrated excellent manners throughout the day was Sophie. And the special award for teamwork and camaraderie was given to Paris.

We are looking forward to working with them alongside Bonnie & Betty to develop their modelling careers. Immediately following her win, mini model Lara was invited for a shoot with Ruthie Deane. With ease Lara showed her talents as a young actress in front of the camera delivering effortless variety, resulting in stunning portfolio ready images. The iron curves embossed within an old church door add a vintage feel to this image. Lara carried freshly picked wild gypsophila to add to the overall mood of this shot. Lara said she ‘felt like a Princess’ and wanted to keep her hair like this forever. Cute!

My Model Diary Even though I haven’t been as busy with castings or shoots these past couple of weeks I have learnt a lot. Me and a few other EM models attended a training day run by them as part of our model apprenticeship program. What EM did throughout the day with their apprentice models was to teach them certain things about the industry and how to be the most professional model you can be. As me and the other apprentice models don’t have much experience it was extremely helpful. Cheryl spoke to us about the industry, how to portray yourself at a casting, and how to do a variety of different poses. She explained to us that professionalism is key to being taken seriously as a model. Confidence is also very important, because if you don’t have confidence in yourself then neither will the client. Cheryl wanted us to improve our posing and to do

Winner of the EMG model search 2014 Frankie, keeps us up to date with her model life, juggling her university studies and her ongoing model training provided by EMG... “Confidence is also very important, because if you don’t have confidence in yourself then neither will the client.” this we had to do five different variations of a chosen pose. I chose to portray sultry and happy. Initially it was quite challenging thinking of five different ways to portray happy (because surely you just have to smile!?!) but Cheryl quickly taught us that by using your legs, arms and face in a variety of different ways you can alter the way you are portraying ‘happy’ entirely. And by the end we were all giving Cheryl our five different looks quickly and sharply. This, I learnt, is an important skill to acquire because as I start attending more and more shoots the photographers will rely on me to know which

looks are suited to the type of shoot I am doing. He or she will also rely on me to understand my own body and know which poses work best for my body type. The same goes for my face. I have now learnt that I do a sultry pose well. So now I will work on my variation of different sultry looks and use them when being photographed as this is my strongest look. It’s all about knowing what poses work for your body and using that to your advantage when being photographed. I have also done another photo shoot with Ruth. She again was encouraging me to pose in a variety of different ways and to not just give the camera the same look, as clients look for variation in models. We managed to get multiple different looks and poses. I am looking forward to attending more castings and developing my career even further. Every Model Magazine

MODEL advice from Stephanie Grao

Photo shoots are a huge part of modelling and the ability to create beautiful and interesting images is essential in order to remain competitive in the industry and advance your career. Producing stunning and intriguing pictures will not only gain you great publicity when the images are published and improve your reputation within the industry, but are also essential to have in your portfolio to catch the eye of casting directors especially where hundreds of models are competing for only one spot. Often when we look at stunning images it seems as if the model is effortlessly beautiful when in fact there is a significant amount of work, technique and, most importantly, self-confidence behind what we see. Firstly, it 36

Every Model Magazine

is vital that you simply believe in yourself, in your ability, competence and beauty and do not let anyone tear down your confidence. If you keep that in mind when you go into a shoot, you will feel more relaxed, creative and free to try out different ideas. Prior to a shoot, ensure that you are well informed about the company and what the client expectation is to avoid misunderstanding. Before attending a casting, you should decide whether you respect the company you are casting for and if you would like to and are comfortable doing the job on offer. If you are unfamiliar with the brand then carry out some research beforehand. That way you will not waste the client or agency and your own time casting for a job you do not want. If you have any queries, feel free to speak to your agency or the casting directors. I attended a casting for a modelling role in an R&B artists music video and they enquired as to whether I would agree to act in a scene where I would be dressed glamorously in a casino smoking a cigar. I did not want girls and young woman to watch that scene and believe that smoking is glamorous, cool or important if you want to be accepted so I politely told them that I would be unwilling to pretend to smoke and, despite my refusal to play that particular role, they contacted me a week later offering me the lead role. Honesty and clear

communication is vital to ensure that all parties are happy and on board with the project. For instance, if you are casting for an artistic, commercial or sensual job such as a magazine editorial, music video, or shoot for a lingerie brand and you are not comfortable with nudity or anything else that may be portrayed, make sure that it will not be required and inform your agent of what you won’t do before being sent to a casting. To be a successful model you need to be strong, true to who you are, what you believe in and do not give in to pressure. If there is a misunderstanding while on set and a photographer and/or client thought that you would be willing to do something or are trying to convince you to do something you are not comfortable with, do not simply do it to avoid confrontation. Remember that once your pictures have been taken you have no control over them and something silly can seriously harm your reputation and career. If anything strange or inappropriate happens during a shoot inform your agency about it as it will help protect other models in the future. There are important measures that should be taken to physically prepare yourself for a long day of shooting in order to arrive as a fresh, blank canvas ready to be worked on by a make-up artist and

hair stylist. Rest and sleep the night before is paramount to avoid having a tired face and dark bags under your eyes. In addition, you will arrive with a positive energy and your well-rested mind will be much better able to produce creative ideas. Remember to shave unwanted body hair and apply moisturiser on your face and body. Ensure that your hair is clean by washing it on the day of the shoot or the evening before so that it looks shiny, fluffy and oil free so that any hair style can easily be created. Try not to wear make-up en route to the shoot. I know many girls feel uncomfortable with the idea of walking out of their house bare faced but just remember that you are beautiful without make-up on. Ensure that you arrive well-dressed and stylish as the rest of the team will be observing you and as a model your image is everything so by no means arrive looking scruffy. Knowing how to position your face and body in front of the camera is vital. At first it may seem challenging to imagine how your poses translate onto camera but this will eventually come naturally to you. Take direction if given and be open to ideas and suggestions. During the shoot you must keep in mind the direction the light is coming from to better position your face so as to avoid shadows covering parts of your face, especially when

“Knowing how to position your face and body in front of the camera is vital. shooting outdoors where the light cannot be as easily controlled as in a studio. If light is predominantly coming from your side, try to position your face and body as much as you can into the light as well as lifting your face to avoid shadows forming on your neck. In shoots where the lighting is not being fully controlled, it can be difficult to know how you are appearing on camera so ask for feedback or take a look at your shots and change your poses accordingly. Always keep your neck long and try to make your legs look as long as you can especially during fashion shoots. When photographed while sitting or lying down, avoid keeping your legs completely straight or completely bent as this will

make them look stubby. Try and position your legs away from the camera, so that your knee caps are not facing the camera lens, maintaining a slight bend in your legs which will make them look longer and slimmer. A general rule is that if you want a body part to appear smaller you should keep it further away from the camera. In addition, when standing try creating different shapes with your body and lifting your face rather than just standing straight as this will help to create more alluring pictures. Due to the difficulty in knowing how you are appearing on camera it is advisable to practice different facial expressions and poses in front of the mirror. This exercise should be done regularly in order for these to be instilled in your mind. To create exceptional images you need to focus and immerse yourself within the ideas or story you are illustrating. When you model for a brand, you become an

Every Model Magazine

37

integral part of the marketing strategy. Therefore, you must understand what concept the brand is selling to embody that during the shoot. In addition think of the mood and inspiration behind the shoot itself and play with these concepts. Modelling always requires some degree of acting the amount of which differs between catalogue and e-commerce shoots where there is very little role playing as opposed to magazine editorials, fashion and commercial work where creativity is required to a larger extent. The objective of catalogue and e-commerce shoots is to display the clothes and their details clearly. The set for these shoots are typically very simple as they usually consist of modelling in front of a white background. Normally models are asked to carry out simple poses and vary facial expressions between being content, smiling and serious. Although modelling in these shoots seems fairly straightforward, being genuine is imperative to bring your photographs to life. In your mind picture yourself as a character explaining the reason for wearing that specific outfit. For instance, if you are dressed in a business suit imagine that you are going into work feeling stylish in a new outfit or if you are sporting a summer dress you may picture yourself as a girl about to go on a first 38

Every Model Magazine

date. It is essential that your eyes, said to be the “window to the soul”, be alive and express meaning which is accomplished through acting. For editorials, fashion and commercial work you should also construct a character. However, since these shoots have more complex ideas and story lines, as they often involve interacting with other models and unique sets, you should formulate and embody a more rounded character to explain who you are and why you are with these other characters in that particular location. For example, in a music video you may be in a party scene where you

“Think of the mood and inspiration behind the shoot itself and play with these concepts. Modelling always requires some degree of acting.” are playing a girl competing for the singer`s attention. Therefore, regardless of the type of shoot, you should try to think the thoughts and feel the emotions of the character you are portraying as your body language and poses will flow

more naturally and your face will express sincere feelings. Since the art of acting permeates a range of modelling work, I highly recommend taking some theatre classes. Not only does acting help with expressing yourself during work, it also goes some way to improve communication skills and self-confidence which is advantageous for castings and helpful for your own personal development. Furthermore, If you are a commercial model or are interested in breaking into this industry, learning how to act will aid you into gaining more work in this area. Acting can help you overcome shyness and display a “girl next door” personality as being smiley, happy, charismatic and talkative are attributes commonly sought after for commercial work. I`ve taken some acting classes and have found it to be very beneficial when casting for and working in music videos, advertisements and commercials where a large degree of acting is required. If you believe in yourself, put your heart and soul into everything you do and dedicate yourself to learning and improving, you will achieve great results not only in photo shoots but in all areas of modelling. If you have any questions or would like to speak further feel free to contact me via via my Facebook profile: Stephanie Grao.

Makeup Matters

Introducing Dannielle, a professional make-up artist working within the modelling and beauty industry. New to EM Magazine, this edition she talks about the art in make artistry and how a great MUA is an integral part of a production team. With over fifteen years experience in the field of beauty and fashion makeup EM Magazine have invited me to talk all things 'beauty' with you. This time let's touch on the subject of why make-up artistry is so important to photographers and models. I was taught by the KISS method of 'Keep It Simple Stupid'! It might seem harsh, but it works effectively for me. Firstly, as a professional MUA liaising and communication is vital along with sticking to a set brief. My role as a make-up artist is to create an illusion too 48

Every Model Magazine

draw in the viewer. But more importantly my place is to work alongside the models and photographers to achieve the desired result. Rule number one is skin care in order to combat any skin problems before applying makeup. Skin needs to be cleansed moisturised before application of products. Realistically we all have days when skin can be dry, dull or have a break out despite all efforts to prevent problems. No matter how much we take pride in health, eat a balanced diet, exercise, drink plenty of water and take in take early nights, we will all still have our off days. But that isn't to say

we shouldn't do our best. Look after your health and your skin will reflect your efforts. Understanding lighting as an MUA is extremely helpful to achieving the best results. Natural lighting is different to working in a studio so you should adapt your application depending on your location. Blending makeup will make or break a photo. The right brushes and tools are essential for this. You really cannot afford to compromise on quality when blending and applying makeup for professional purposes. We at EM Magazine recently tested the Nanshy pro brushes and found them to

not only be of a professional quality, but really did help with creating high end looks. All make up artists have there own techniques and vast experience which makes us all unique in make up artistry. We would love to hear about your tips and tricks to share will our professionals via EM Magazine. Please write in and let us know to info@ everymodelmagazine.co.uk. The importance of makeup to photographers is to enhance features. A flawless makeup creation that collects lighting effectively makes a photographers post production work so much easier. To be successful in your makeup artistry you must achieve precisely what the photographer and team ask. If their work is reduced by your work, they WILL hire you again. A great image is down to excellent teamwork. When a team with excellence is formed, it is rarely broken. My top tip for this week is to ask questions! I believe less can be more and you can always add more make up rather take it away when you are working on a busy set. And always powder up to set the make up, take away shine and ad a setting spray. See you next time.

Summer Beauty Guide

A-Z

From contouring to micellar water, there are so many baffling terms in beauty that sometimes it’s hard to know what’s what. The beauty experts at Hairtrade.com have come up with the ultimate A to Z of beauty terms to explain the latest trends and decode the fads. Some of the new trends defined include negative space manicures and oil pulling. Other terms from the beauty glossary include old faithfuls that are experiencing a revival like jojoba oil and winged eyeliner. Beauty expert Laura Meredith from Hairtrade.com says, “It’s not just products that people are hailing their beauty success down to – it’s superfoods and bizarre routines too. Some products, especially in makeup, can be daunting or seem too similar as their use isn’t really explained properly. Just because something is in fashion doesn’t mean it’s right for your skin type or look – it’s important to know what’s what to see if you need an illuminator or a highlighter.”

It’s the secret to Kim Kardashian’s famous Instagram selfies – but what actually is contouring? It’s a way of giving shape and enhancing your features through make-up by subtly defining shadows. Top tip, avoid shimmery products, and stick to a matte look 50

Dry oil

A hot trend for fake tan right now, dry body oil is sprayable oil that spreads an even mist over your skin without a greasy finish.

Exfoliators

An essential part of any beauty regime, exfoliating helps shift dead skin cells and unclog dirt. Try and exfoliate once or twice a week depending on your skin type.

F Feature nail Having a feature nail is a great way to make a manicure pop. Paint all your nails one colour apart from your ring finger then have fun with it.

Gel nails

Gel nails are a brilliant solution for holiday nails. The gel polish is hardened by curing under a UV or L.E.D light for a manicure that can last for weeks.

Highlighters are perfect for showing off your favourite features. Aim for a highlighter that looks like a slight sheen, not glittery and apply it to the top of your cheekbones, temple and centre of your chin.

I did it, I successfully completed my fifth year of running a sell-out Miss London beauty pageant! For the second year on the spin I have co-hosted it with another London title, Miss Hippodrome and feel privileged to have showcased both at the beautiful Hippodrome Casino. 54

Every Model Magazine

So much goes in to running a beauty pageant. Funny, in the last year I have noticed a few newbie organisers propping up to host heats. I think they were under the impression it’s simple because of course, girls are just desperate to be a beauty queen, right? The truth is, as much as many ladies get a little giddy at the sight of a sparkly tiara, they also want to know what they are competing for. Luckily for me, I run a pageant, which not only establishes you as the Queen of the adored Capital, but moreover, wins you a place in the prestigious Miss England final in association with Miss World. Both are incredibly established and respected beauty pageants. But the association isn’t enough; as an organiser, it’s important to secure a reputable name for yourself so that women can trust you and want to enter your heat. I initially came to run the Miss London competition after my lovely friend, and Editor of this magazine, Ruth Deane convinced me to give it a whirl. With only six weeks until the deadline to submit my entrant, I embarked on an incredibly stressful journey, but I came out the other end with one

“At heart I’ll always be

of my most beautiful discoveries, Rissikat Bade. Rissi went on to become an incredibly successful Miss England finalist, generating huge global press interest and placing second in the Miss England final. We formed a really lovely friendship and furthermore, I quickly met many new people whom I have gone on to work closely with on various other projects- in short, I caught the pageant bug. Every year since has got a little easier because I learn from my mistakes. My best asset, as well as failure, is that I am a perfectionist. It has it’s advantages and disadvantages, as you always strive for your personal best but equally run yourself in to the ground. As immodest as it sounds, I give myself credit for what I have done with the Miss London pageant. Each year I receive hundreds of applicants. I have established the competition now to a point that it entices new women to enter and most important for me, gives all of them an opportunity to share in a fun and confidence-boosting experience. The Miss England association is incredibly charitable, and as organisers

the South London girl who lived in many a shadow of her peers.” we stress the importance of having a charitable nature to our entrants. In the five years I have organised the pageant, collectively my finalists have raised a whopping £42,000 for charity. As a supporter of non-government funded organisations, I have felt blessed to see our donations at work. The looks on the children’s faces at The Camillian Home (an orphanage in Thailand) for example, will live with me forever, when I handed over our cheque. This year’s event has been one of my favourite to organise. The Hippodrome for starters is an incredible venue to host at. The family run business boasts a large and very supportive team who are on hand to cater for your every need. Then there were the girls- one of my favourite bunches yetalmost no divas! They proved themselves to be unique and beautiful both inside and out. It was an incredibly difficult

decision to knock my 31 semi-finalists down to 16 but I got there in the end and when I saw them all on stage at the Finale, I knew I made the right decision. That said, in this case, only two ladies can win, and this year it was Miss London 2015 Elisabeth Williamson and Miss Hippodrome 2015 Isabelle Paloma’s turn. Both ladies have that certain, ‘je ne sais quoi’. The two things that shine about them both are their smiles and beautiful personalities. I am really excited to work with them both and am convinced they have very promising careers ahead of them. I think a testament to the pageant’s success has to be the sponsors. For the past two years now I have received headline financial sponsorship from a global finance organisation called, ICM Capital. Upon meeting the CEO Shoaib Abedi, I thought, what am I getting in to here? This guy is going to laugh me out of his office but when he turned around, looked at my proposal and said, words to the effect of, ‘where do I sign?’ I had to find a pen quickly before I collapsed. I guess I should add to my failures, a small amount of self-disbelief. Every Model Magazine

At heart I’ll always be the South London girl who lived in many a shadow of her peers. But, that said, I have always been the hardest worker, and though never naturally the A* student, I achieved the grade through sheer perseverance. I guess that’s why ICM Capital committed to a second year sponsorship because they were proud to be part of the event I created for them. 56

Every Model Magazine

What I’m getting at here is simple- we’re all beauty queens deep down. We may not feel like it on the outside, but a good heart, charitable nature and strive for excellence speaks wonders for our female personas. I look at my girls and I’m bursting with pride. From the contestant who shared her personal struggle of a double mastectomy at 19 to the other who has battled anorexiabeauty queens are so much more

than what the feminists will have society believe. So my advice to any aspiring competitors out there, enter. I promise you will not regret your decision to be involved! As an organiser, this competition has improved me as a person- I am filled with confidence, patience and empathy for my entrants, and moreover, truly grateful for the opportunities it has given me. God bless Mauritius, that really was a highlight.
