He was the honorary mayor of Elko and a prominent rancher in these parts. Rumors have it that he may have done a little singing on the side. All kidding aside, the theme for the Halleck Bar Party this year at the Northeastern Nevada Museum is Being Bingâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;a salute to the legendary entertainer Bing Crosby and his Elko County connections. Drop in at 1515 Idaho Street in Elko on Friday, April 8. The festivities are scheduled from 6:00 to 9:00 pm. A donation of $20.00 is suggested as admission. Here is your chance to come in character as Bing or a leading lady from one of his several movies (think Rosemary Clooney, Grace Kelly, or Dorothy Lamour). A prize will be awarded for best costume. Otherwise, a silent auction is also slated for those who simply want to take home a unique Crosby souvenir. Known as the best cocktail evening in Elko for 40 plus years, Halleck Bar Party attendees lift a glass of Beefeater gin to toast the acquisition of the antique bar from the wild and woolly town of Halleck. Enjoy live music reminiscent of Bing Crosby and other crooners from the easy listening era. Crosby came to Elko County in 1943 seeking a retreat for his family from the hoopla of Hollywood. He eventually acquired four ranches in the region. Elko Mayor David Dotta appointed Bing as honorary mayor of the city in 1948. Association with the popular performer put Elko on the map for many. As an example, Elko hosted the premiere of the Bing Crosby and Jane Wyman picture Here Comes the Groom in 1951. An exhibit on Crosby in the Northeastern Nevada Museum features his denim tuxedo and other memorabilia. For us, it's what fresh vegetables and fruits are making their first seasonal appearance in the markets, and nothing says "spring" like asparagus! Spring Asparagus Asparagus spears are the eager sprouts of the asparagus plant captured and cut at just the right moment. In perfect spring growing conditions, a spear may grow 10-inches in a 24hour period – timing for the harvest is everything! 22

How to choose asparagus… Great asparagus on the table begins with choosing the right bunch at the market. Look for these characteristics: - Check for fresh, tightly closed green tips, no signs of mushiness or yellowing - Spear is straight and strong, no sign of wilting, softness or rubbery stalks - Choose stalks of similar diameter so that the bunch cooks evenly - No sign of secondary sprouting from inside the scales - The triangular scales hold tightly to the spear - Bottom of the stalk is free from excessive dryness - Cut off the wood, whitish end or snap it away Check the label to determine where and how the asparagus has been grown. How to store fresh asparagus… Asparagus is best when purchased fresh and eaten as soon as possible, but it may be kept refrigerated 1-2 days. 1. Cut about ½ inch off the bottom of the stalks. 2. Place upright in a glass or vase filled with an inch of water. 3. Cover the “bouquet” loosely with an inverted plastic bag.

At some point on the asparagus stalk its character changes from woody to tender. Hold the stalk firmly, then begin bending from the bottom end. It will naturally snap off at the point where it becomes tender. Discard the woody ends and begin cooking. 2. CUT AND MOVE ON We’ve been known to evaluate a bunch of asparagus and decide to cut the entire bunch with a chef’s knife in one swoop. This works best for a bunch of thin stalks of similar profile. There may be a little more waste, but It is much faster! 3. TO PEEL OR NOT TO PEEL Once snapped or cut, you may opt to peel or not peel the bottom end of the stalk. Thin stalks have a thin peel and do not require peeling with a vegetable peeler. Thicker stalks may benefit from peeling with a vegetable peeler – fibrous strings are removed and the peeled stalks cook more evenly.

1 tablespoon balsamic vinegar  Salt to taste  Freshly ground pepper to taste Steam the asparagus until just crisp tender. Combine the tomatoes, shallot, olive oil, balsamic vinegar, salt and pepper to taste. Serve the asparagus topped with the tomato garnish.

Steamed and Boiled… Cook asparagus until it is just barely done. It should be bright green, crisp, yet tender. Check for doneness with a knife tip inserted in the thicker portion of a stalk. This will take 5-8 minutes depending on the size of the asparagus. STEAMING asparagus in an upright position is the ideal scenario. The thicker bottom part of the stalk gets more heat than the tender tips. Loosely wrap the bunch with kitchen twine or a Foodloop, and place in a steamer basket inside a pot with boiling water for 5-8 minutes or until just barely tender.

A quick hollandaise… This isn’t the way Julia Child would do it, but this quick version of Hollandaise Sauce works for us! Whisk 1 egg, juice of ½ lemon (2T), and a pinch of salt together very well in a small saucepan. Add 1 stick of cold butter cut into 8 pieces. Place over medium-low heat, whisk constantly until all of the butter has melted and the sauce begins to thicken. Remove from heat, continue whisking. Serve immediately over asparagus spears.

Roasted & Grilled… These two methods of cooking asparagus are really our favorite methods for all kinds of vegetables. Both methods extract moisture from the vegetable concentrating the flavors. The result is an intensity of taste that is always amazing. Roasting Asparagus brings out the best flavors. Place prepped and dried asparagus spears on a baking sheet. Drizzle the spears with olive oil and gently roll around to coat. Sprinkle the spears with kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper. Place in a 400 F oven and roast for 15-20 minutes or until just crisp-tender. Grilling Asparagus also concentrates its flavor and adds the special bonus of the direct fire aromas. Wok-Seared Chicken Tenders with Asparagus & Pistachios MAKES 4 SERVINGS, ABOUT 1-1/4 CUPS EACH. Here’s an East-meets-West stir-fry that will soon become a family favorite. Serve it over rice or noodles, with a simple salad of arugula and orange sections dressed in a light vinaigrette.

Heat oil in a wok or large skillet over high heat. Add asparagus; cook, stirring, for 2 minutes. Add chicken; cook, stirring, for 4 minutes. Stir in scallions, ginger, oyster sauce and chile-garlic sauce; cook, stirring, until the chicken is juicy and just cooked through, 1 to 2 minutes more. Stir in pistachios and serve immediately.

Wrap it up… Asparagus makes a great starting point for great spring appetizers. Include asparagus in spring rolls, wrap spears and a smear of herbed goat cheese in fillo dough, wrap a strip of puff pastry in a spiral around a stalk, or let your imagination take you new places. Try Asparagus wrapped in Prosciutto (or bacon) – Roast 20 minutes at 400 F. Another favorite is Asparagus with Parmesan and

White asparagus is known by the German name for asparagus, Spargel. This asparagus has been grown in complete darkness by mounding dirt over the emerging spears. Without the sun’s inspiration, the green chlorophylls are suppressed. Some say white asparagus has greater tenderness and more sweetness.

Purple asparagus, an Italian cultivar of green asparagus known as “Violetto d’Albenga,” is known to be even sweeter and contain less fiber. Purple asparagus has a greater concentration of blue chlorophylls that override the green components. If you find two or three colors of asparagus at the same time, consider mixing them together for a dramatic and unique presentation.

1. Place broth, water, potato, shallot, garlic, thyme, savory (or marjoram) and salt in a large saucepan. Bring to a boil over high heat. Reduce heat to medium-low, cover, and simmer until the potato is tender, about 8 minutes. Add asparagus, return to a simmer, and cook, covered, until the asparagus is tender, about 5 minutes more. 2. Meanwhile, cook prosciutto in a small skillet over medium heat, stirring, until crisp, about 5 minutes. 3. Pour the soup into a large blender or food processor; puree until smooth, scraping down the sides if necessary. Season with pepper. Serve topped with the crisped prosciutto.

Ingredients For the Corned Beef • 2 lb flank steak (about 1-inch thick) • 1/2 tsp salt • 1/2 tsp pepper • 1/3 C olive oil • 3 tbsp brown sugar • 4 garlic cloves, minced

For the Chimichurri • 1 C fresh cilantro • 2/3 C fresh parsley • 1/4 C fresh oregano • 2 garlic cloves, minced • 1/4 C red wine vinegar • 2/3 C olive oil • 1/2 tsp salt • 1/2 tsp pepper • 1/4 tsp crushed red pepper flakes

Preparation 1. Add the flank steak to a large baking dish and season it with the salt and pepper. In a bowl, whisk together the olive oil, brown sugar and garlic cloves, then cover the steak with it and place it in the fridge to marinate. Can be marinated anywhere from 2 hours to overnight. 2. When you're ready to cook the steak, you can grill, broil or pan sear it to your liking. Preheat the broiler in your oven and move the oven rack as close as possible. Place the steak on a broiler pan or baking sheet and broil on each side for about 5 minutes. This will result to a medium to medium-well doneness in most ovens. Allow the steak to rest for 10 minutes before slicing it thinly against the grain. Serve it immediately with the chimichurri.

Ingredients For the Salad • 1 (15 oz) can of chickpeas • 1 red bell pepper, chopped • 1 yellow bell pepper, chopped • 1 green bell pepper, chopped • 1 small red onion, chopped • 15 grape tomatoes, halved • 1/3 cup pitted kalamata olives • 1 cucumber, sliced and quartered • 4 oz feta cheese, crumbled

For the Dressing

• 2 tsp olive oil

• 2 tbsp freshly squeezed lemon juice • 2 cloves garlic, minced • 1 tsp dried oregano

• Freshly ground salt and pepper, to taste

Preparation 1. P lace all salad ingredients into a large bowl and toss to combine. In a small bowl, whisk together olive oil, lemon juice, garlic and oregano. Pour onto salad and toss again. Taste and add salt and pepper as you'd like. Place in refrigerator for 1 hour to marinate, or serve immediately. Salad is best enjoyed within 2-3 days

CHIMICHURRI 1. Combine the parsley, cilantro, oregano and garlic in a food processor and pulse until small leaves and pieces remain. Add in the vinegar and pulse once more. 2. With the processor going, stream in the olive oil and mix until just combined. Stir in the salt, pepper and red pepper flakes. Taste and season additionally if needed. 3. Store sealed in the fridge for up to a week or so.

Ingredients •1 large clove garlic, minced •O live oil, for the pan •3 -4 thin spring onions, chopped small, • 5 eggs

• C water or milk

plus slice a few into thin vertical strips

•¼ C fresh mozzarella pieces •¼ C crumbled feta •¼ C chopped tarragon •S alt & pepper •A few pinches of red pepper flakes • ½ C chopped asparagus tips • ½ C peas

Preparation Preheat your oven to 425°F. In a medium skillet, lightly sauté the chopped onions & asparagus pieces in a bit of olive oil, salt & pepper. Remove from the pan after just a few minutes. Blend eggs, water, salt and pepper in a blender until combined and lightly foamy. Wipe out the skillet you used previously and coat it with a bit of olive oil. Pour in the eggs and add half of the veggies. Put the skillet in the oven, and bake for 15 minutes. Then (carefully, without moving the skillet around too much), add the rest of the veggies and the cheeses. Continue to bake for another 15 minutes or until the fritatta is puffed up and the eggs are set. Top with chopped tarragon, a grind of pepper and a few red pepper flakes. Let cool before slicing.

Ingredients: For the Cake • 2 1/3 C all purpose flour • 1 tsp. baking powder • 1/2 tsp. baking soda • 1/2 tsp. salt • 1 C unsalted butter • 1 1/3 C white sugar

• 3 large eggs

• 4 oz cream cheese

• 1 tsp coconut extract

• 2 tsp vanilla extract

• 1 tsp vanilla extract • 1/2 C coconut milk • 1/2 C whole milk

For the Frosting • 1/2 C unsalted butter

• 4 C sifted powdered sugar • 1/2 tsp salt

For the Garnish •2 C toasted unsweetened coconut flakes

Preparation 1. P reheat oven to 350°F. For cake: Line the bottoms of two 6” cake rounds with parchment and lightly grease the sides. Set aside. Place flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt in a mixing bowl and whisk together. In another mixing bowl, beat together butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Add eggs, one at a time and continue to mix. Add vanilla and coconut extracts. Scrape down sides of the bowl. Add dry ingredients and mix. Stir in coconut milk and whole milk and continue to stir until mixture is smooth. Divide mixture into prepared cake rounds and bake for 45 to 50 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean when inserted into the center of the cake and the tops are golden brown. Allow cake to cool completely and refrigerate for at least 1 hour. 2. F or frosting: Place butter and cream cheese into a mixing bowl and beat together until light and fluffy. Add powdered sugar, one cup at a time, and continue to beat until light and fluffy. Stir vanilla extract and salt into the mixture and beat until completely incorporated and mixture is smooth. 3. To assemble: Place a thin layer of frosting over the top of one of the cake circles and top with the other cake circle, inverted (so both cake circle tops are touching one another). Gently frost the two tiered cake with a thin layer of frosting (the crumb coat). 4. P lace in the refrigerator for at least 30 minutes. Coat the cake in another layer of frosting and with handfuls of toasted coconut flakes, carefully press them onto the sides of the cake until fully coated. Smooth the frosting on the top of the cake. Slice and serve.

Did you know that American Goldfinches are not bright yellow all year? American Goldfinches have black and white markings year around, but the predominant body color of both male and female goldfinches in the winter is a drab olive-yellow. During spring we’ll see that color change to the bright yellow in the males that gives the goldfinch its name. The males will also develop a pronounced black cap that extends from the top of the beak and back over the bird’s crown. Female goldfinches will also become brighter in the spring and summer months, but will never achieve the bright yellow coloration of the males. Juvenile males will not achieve their color until their second year. Feathers are made of a strong, durable material (keratin), but eventually they simply wear out because of UV radiation, wind, and dust particles. Since worn-out feathers can't be repaired, they must be replaced. All birds do it; they have to grow new feathers once or twice a year to stay warm, dry, and airborne, and in many cases they grow differently colored feathers at different seasons to match their surroundings or to impress others of their species. This process is called molting.

As the new feathers begin to grow, they push upward on the old feathers, causing the old feathers to loosen and eventually fall out. It's similar to what happens as baby teeth are replaced by the mature teeth underneath. A bird’s feathers contain 25% of the protein found in its body. In the spring the male turns bright yellow with a black cap, wings, and tail, and white rump. The photo of the male goldfinch in a tree shows black feathers on his head and bright yellow feathers on most of his body but some white feathers still haven’t molted. The female keeps the duller brown color and lacks the black cap. The American Goldfinch’s legs, feet and bill also change from a dark grayish brown to a buffy yellow orange color. The bright male perched on the fence has finished its molt. In addition to American Goldfinches our area also has the smaller Lesser Goldfinch which also goes through a spring molt. The males of this species have a black cap and a solid olive-green back. The breast is not as bright yellow as the American Goldfinch.

American Goldfinches have white under their tails and the Lessers have yellow. See if you can tell the difference in the group photo. It takes extra energy to grow feathers which requires extra protein and fats in their diet. This means that spring time can bring a feeding frenzy in competition for available food. To encourage goldfinches into your yard, plant native thistles and other composite plants, as well as native milkweed. Almost any kind of bird feeder may attract goldfinches including hopper, platform, and hanging sock feeders, and these birds don’t mind feeders that sway in the wind. They seldom feed on the ground. They’re most attracted to sunflower seed and nyjer but will eat some of the cheaper birdseed mixes. Goldfinches also are drawn to backyards in search of fresh water. kittens. A new puppy or kitten can be a bundle of joy and also a lot of work. Between cleaning up messes and potty training, time flies by and they grow up before you know it. It is important to remember that puppies and kittens need socialization as they grow.

Socialization is the process of preparing your dog or cat to enjoy interactions and be comfortable with other animals, people, places, and activities. The most important time for puppy and kitten socialization is during the first three months of life. Social exposure should begin at 3-14 weeks of age for kittens and 3-9 weeks of age for puppies. During this time, puppies should be exposed to as many new people, animals, stimuli, and environments as can be achieved safely and without causing overstimulation manifested as excessive fear, withdrawal, or avoidance behavior. In general, puppies can start puppy socialization classes as early as 7-8 weeks of age. Puppies should receive a minimum of one set of vaccines at least 7 days prior to the first class and a first deworming. They should be kept up-to-date on vaccines throughout the class.

Dogs were selected as companions for their tendency to be kind and friendly. They have been domesticated for a longer period of time than cats so their social abilities are much more developed. Still, puppies can benefit from interacting with other pets and people. Socialization classes can teach puppies manners and lay the foundation for training and obedience. Dogs in a chronic state of fearfulness might need more structure in the household. In order to add structure, you can have the dog sit before meal time, before putting on the leash, and before going outside. Adding organization to a dogâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s routine decreases anxiety. Providing a crate will also help a fearful dog - some dogs like to have an open crate where they can escape from commotion. The crate is meant to be a safe place for the dog and not a place for punishment.

It is important to realize that a lot of social behavior is determined by genetics. Cats can inherit their shyness or outgoing nature from their fathers, while dogsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; personalities usually depend on the breed. A happy kitten = a happy cat. The early stages of kittenhood are critical for coaxing cats into being social creatures. Around 3 to 12 weeks old, they should be handled for about 40 minutes a day to help them relax. Kittens are much more fearless at this stage so use this opportunity to frequently introduce them to different things, people, pets, and experiences. Each of these interactions with different people and in different places should feel happy and safe. A good tip for kittens is to use cat toys when playing (avoid hands and feet), and watch the posture for signs of anxiety.

No matter what form of training or socialization you choose for your pet, it should occur in a safe and happy environment. Make sure your trainer uses positive reinforcement techniques and not the dominance theory. The American Veterinary Society of Animal Behavior emphasizes that the standard of care for veterinarians is that dominance theory should not be used a general guide for behavior modification. Instead, they emphasize that behavior modification and training should focus on reinforcing desirable behaviors and avoiding the reinforcement of undesirable behaviors.

Newmont’s Interactive Approach to Safety Training

At the beginning of each year, Newmont Mining Corporation’s Health and Safety Department, along with selected members of our Nevada workforce, conduct Annual Refresher Training (ART) for all Newmont Nevada employees. As required by the Mine Safety Health Administration (MSHA) every year, each ART attendee completes a 10-hour day full of mining-related safety training and review relevant to his or her work area and discipline. Newmont’s Nevada workforce is divided into several groups of up to 200 employees each and distributed throughout the ART schedule, which runs from January to March. When first arriving on their designated day, each group is then subdivided further into teams, which rotate through five 80-minute classes during the day. But unlike ARTs of decades past, that day seems to flash by.

and innovative ideas that resonate well across the diversely skilled population of ART attendees. Across northern Nevada, Newmont employs about 3,500 people, all of whom are required to complete MSHA training. Considering our remoteness and the distances separating our homes and workplaces from the nearest medical and emergency facilities, it is comforting to know that so many people from among our local communities are taught basic first-responder skills, such as CPR, first aid, and fire extinguisher use. At this year’s ART, the Newmont Mine Emergency Response Team (MERT) conducted a realistic, fully interactive emergency simulation in which employees had to apply first aid to one victim, conduct CPR on another victim, AND put out a fire. Classes like this have actually helped employees in real-life crisis situations. Newmont has seen several examples in which our employees have taken the lead in responding to real life-or-death emergencies and saved lives … on and off the mine site … and equipped only with skills they learned at ART. In late 2014 a Newmont employee resuscitated a man who had collapsed while running. Thanks to the employee’s quick action and basic CPR training learned during ART, he saved the man’s life.

Over the years, Newmont’s Health and Safety department has steadily improved the ART experience for employees. Long, dull days of lectures, slideshows, and one-way communication from an instructor to a largely inert audience have evolved into entertaining and informative modules of interactive, hands-on exercises and games that test employees’ knowledge of various safety topics, some that should be familiar and some that are taught during the classes. This method encourages Newmont thanks all of our ART instructors for the employees to be actively engaged in learning and hard work and creativity they put into making the interactive safety classes both fun and educational remembering the information. Employees also tend to show more interest when for everyone! Change passwords regularly. · Close unused credit-card accounts and destroy the credit card. · Use a shredder for documents containing personal information. · Request a copy of a credit report and keep tabs on who might be accessing it.

P arkinson ’ s A wareness M onth

Parkinson’s Disease (PD) is a chronic progressive movement disorder of the central nervous system. Typically the disease affects fine motor skills, such as tremor, muscle rigidity or stiffness, slowness of movement and postural instability. These symptoms vary from person to person. There is no easy "test" for Parkinsons, just a process of elimination of what you don't have, most times it takes years before Dr.s are able to give an accurate diagnoses. PD does not discriminate, there is no cure, only treatments to ease the symptoms. Those of us with PD have many or sometimes all of the issues associated with PD, but we are still active, vital members of the Elko, Spring Creek Community. Following are “stories” of a few members of the Elko Parkinson’s Support Group.

STEVE PARISH

I first noticed something wrong early in 2005. As a CPA we signed all tax returns and I also was doing a lots of computer work. The upper forearm on my right arm was painful from morning to night. Aspirin helped but was far from a cure and the pain continued. I had several tests but no one seemed to come up with the answer. Following the second time I was tested for Parkinson’s the reason was discovered. It took about a week, starting in May 2006, for the medications to take effect but gradually some of the pain subsided. W W W. E V E R Y T H I N G E L K O . C O M

Parkinson’s medications are not the best friend a guy can have as they were tough on the stomach and it seems they all have the warning “MAY CAUSE DIZZINESS” on the label. Although there are problems they are better than the alternative and life goes on with a big SMILE. The one thing I am still able to do is some wood working. I started back in the early 70's making picture frames for my mother and it has evolved from there. I had a friend give me an old Craftsman table saw, which I love and still use today. I wanted a

set of TV trays about 15 - 20 years ago and at that time could not find any that were sturdy enough, so I made a set for home use. I somehow stumbled on the various kinds of hardwood and continue to use them today. I don’t sell the items but because of the cost

Joe moved to Elko in 1955. He graduated from Elko High School as did his two children. Joe's career was spent with the State of Nevada, first at the NYTC, then with the NDF. He retired from the Division of Emergency Management as the Operations & Training Officer. After living out of state about 10 years, he and his wife Julie returned to live in Elko. Joe has played basketball and was able to do so competitively until he was 60 years old. The great outdoors has always been his favorite place. Golfing and fishing are things he has enjoyed doing. He's been able to travel on fishing trips to Florida, Mexico, the Bahamas, Alaska and Baja California. His brothers, son, and best friend Bill have been his companions on many of these trips. Last year he traveled to the Sacramento Delta for some stripper fishing with his son and two of his brothers. The first change he noticed was a tremor in his left hand, especially when trying to drink

My name is Letticia ( tish) Stephens, and I am going into my 17th year with PD. I am one of the lucky ones in that I passed all of the requirements to have DBS (Deep Brain Stimulation) in 2010. Before I was diagnosed with PD I was very active, did crafts, busy with 2 boys and led a very busy life. After diagnoses, and as the disease and tremors progressed I could barely dress and feed myself. My husband has been by my side through this up and down journey, my caregiver, my love and companion, I give him my love and my thanks. DBS allowed me to once again do the activities I love so much. The brain surgery changed my life 100 percent. It’s been a long battle and one that I will never win, BUT I’m on the upside and I’m not going to let it get me down.

something. Then his hand writing changed. His once beautiful handwriting became difficult to read. In 2006 his wife suspected he had Parkinson's and took him to a neurologist at the University of Utah Medical Center. They were unsure of a diagnosis at that point. Finally in April of 2007 his doctor diagnosed him with Parkinson's Disease. It was a relief in a way but also a hard realization. Its effects have gradually slowed down his ability to do the things he always has taken for granted and enjoyed. Joe has two half sisters and a cousin with PD. His quality of life has greatly improved with the return of his children and grandchildren to the Elko area. He is very proud of them all and loves them very much. Joe also loves and appreciates his community and church. He attends the Church of the Nazerene. There he finds comfort, love and support. A dachshund puppy recently added to the house is the source of much needed laughs and enjoyment. Since my surgery, my dear friend Marcia S. and I started the PD Support Group in Elko. The group helps support others with PD or ones who have family members with PD. There are a number of people in the area with Parkinson’s, some admit it and because of circumstances, others don’t and that’s ok. We have 7 active members of our group at this time, but are aware of a few others I still have Parkinson’s and I deal with the issues every day, but the debilitating tremors are mostly gone because of DBS. Now I can do the crafts I love once again, I make original one of a kind Totes and Purses, and other craft items. I also write poems when the mood strikes me, I have included my latest.

In 2011, I got involved in the Parkinson Support Group, my mother, Sheila Hilyard was diagnosed with Parkinson’s around 2006. I started to attend this support group to further understand what my mother is going through or will be going through. I felt comforted being with people who deal with it each and every day. The support group has helped me to come to terms of what my mother deals with and they have welcomed me with open arms.

I had a reprieve…DBS 5 years ago It solved a lot of my problems, But PD issues are forever Nothing really stops them I know God allowed this into my life And the reasons are very true I feel I’m here to help others So that’s why I’m telling you I do not take lightly this disease that control my life I know that love and laughter will help ease my strife To let you know exactly what I’m saying Whether I have Parkinson’s or not I’m Staying!

I am not in constant contact with my mother because she lives in Montana and I am not her primary caregiver. My brother and sister have taken over her care, and medical and financial issues since my father passed away in 2005. My mother has lived in the same house for the past 50 years, and does not want to live anywhere else. I think she feels that if she lived with one of her kids, she would lose her independence, which I’ve learned from the group is a valid concern for someone with Parkinson’s. Mom is in denial and thinks there is a cure for PD, as she keeps going to doctors to see who will give her the answers she wants to hear. She is not handing the situation well and has a lot of other issues along with PD and I’m sure is confused as to what is caused by PD and what is not. Because of this her entire demeanor has changed and it’s hard to see her struggle with it... Her communication skills have decreased and it is harder to talk with her, so we mostly visit by e-mail and texting. I’m thankful for the support group because I can begin to understand what she is going through and I try to relay the information to my family. I wish there was a support group for them to attend in Montana. .The hardest part of having a parent with PD and not being with them is to hear that they are hurting and you can’t do anything about it. The support group gives me friendship, information and knowledge of PD that I never would have had otherwise it is really scary when you don’t understand.

(I didn’t want to break this down into days, if your life is anything like mine…some days I have the time and some I don’t…and I usually don’t know until mid-way through!)

1. Cabinets: Start at one end of the kitchen and get to the other end! Cabinet by cabinet, drawer by drawer. We all know some of our drawers and cabinets are perfect, but there are probably 3 that really need it! Make a list of items you

Spring is here…that means we can pop open the windows…and clear out the dirt and clutter that has accumulated since the holidays! I don’t know about you, but I feel like I just cleaned the house right after taking down the holiday decorations…but I feel a strong need to get this house in tip top shape! Yep already feeling overwhelmed…so here’s the plan…get it done in one month!!! This is what I have put together based off of lots of different internet plans and challenges…the one unique tip I would give is to accomplish each area with excellence…make a list of items you really want or need in these areas and complete them. That

g in pr an le C really need to help clean these areas up, like baggies, bins, trays etc and make it a priority THIS WEEK to get those items and complete the job!

2. The Freezer/Fridge: Start with the freezer, shelf by shelf and drawer by drawer. If it has freezer burn or you cannot tell what it is, toss it! Clean each area and then make your way to the fridge! Don’t forget to wipe off the top, underneath, the sides and if you can vacuum behind, get those coils cleaned and wiped down! 3. Appliances: ovens, dishwashers, microwaves… The oven is simple, scrub the outside and run the self-cleaning feature. For the dishwasher, wipe down the outside and move inside wiping down the sides and removing the trays to get the bottom all cleaned out. I usually run a hot wash cycle after this with distilled white vinegar and baking soda, that’s going to get all the areas you didn’t! THAT’S IT! Week one done! W W W. E V E R Y T H I N G E L K O . Week Two

Week Four

1. Baseboards and ledges: using a damp sponge and dry towel start at one end of the house and wipe down every baseboard (you may want to vacuum before this), repeat on each level of your home. Any crazy ledges, high shelves that are there for looks only…find a way to get there and wipe it down. This also includes chair rails and banisters!

1. Gutters: grab the ladder and just get it done! - or hire someone!!

2. Corners and High spots: Get the ladder out and get those crazy floating cob webs that have been bugging you. As long as you’re up there, you might want to change batteries in smoke detectors, change any burnt out light bulbs that you have been ignoring, get the dead bugs out of light trays - you know what I mean!

HEAD OUTSIDE!

2. Windows: As long as you have the ladder out create a mixture of 1:1 hot water and vinegar. I recommend wiping down with a cloth or broom first to get the debris and webs off. Then wash them down…if you have a squeegee to wipe the water away it will go faster! 3. Decks and Patio Furniture: Sweep the decks and if needed spray and scrub with a broom. To clean up the patio furniture, I use a warm water and dish washing soap…get it all sudsy and really scrub down…hose off if you have the hose out already for the deck!

3. Blinds/window coverings: Yep just do it. Vacuum them, wipe them down…if they are bad enough fill your tub with warm soapy water and just let them soak in there…scrub, dry and put them back up immediately - the last thing you want are blinds laying around that you never put back up!

Week Three

1. Closets/Entryways: If you have little kiddos in the house, you can choose if they will be in charge of theirs or not! If they can great! If not, drawer by drawer, shelf by shelf and all hanging clothes… donate the ones that they don’t wear or have out grown. Do the same in yours - if you have to try things on to see if you like them or if they fit - do it! 2. Linen closets: make it look nice! Nothing feels better than opening your closet and being proud. Re-fold, clean out and organize those linens. Again if you need items to help these closets get into shape, make the list and get them THIS WEEK! Large zip-lock bags, baskets etc. 3. Entryways: all shoes go into everyone’s wonderfully clean closets and winter items can be put into bins and stored.
