Warrior of the Canyon Saturday, August 12 Annual event held in Lamoille Canyon, NV. The event includes a 3-mile and a 5.5-mile walk open to the public and a 13 mile run or cycle event for Veterans. Veterans, who have been in combat or have suffered through a traumatic experience while serving our country, often turn to other methods of coping such as drugs or alcohol. This event helps promote and provides a positive, healthy alternative for Veterans to participate in and enjoy along with their families.

Warrior of the Canyon brings Veterans and their families together for a fun filled day of activities for everyone involved. This also gives them the opportunity to meet their fellow Veterans and gives them a sense of camaraderie they once had in the service. We offer a free BBQ once all of the participants have crossed the finish line, games and activities for the children, hot air balloon rides, and live entertainment.

We want to show these brave men and women that the community they live in supports them in their decision to live a healthier lifestyle after their service.

This year, Warrior of the Canyon will feature the local group Flags for Heroes, which will display their thousands of flags all the way to the top of Lamoille Canyon.

This FREE fun filled day will include, tethered hot air balloon rides, live band entertainment, a photo booth, games for all, military and local agency vehicle displays, and a BBQ. he City of Elko Recreation Department provides a before and after school Latchkey program and a full day summer program for k-6th grades for all schools within the City of Elko. The before school program is held from 6:00 a.m. to 8:30 a.m. and the after school program from 3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. Monday thru Friday (open early out times.) This program includes snacks and juice, arts and crafts, homework assistance, tutoring, drug awareness curriculum, and organized activities. Committee Against Domestic Violence hires new executive director Longtime director retires after 30 years with organization

The Committee Against Domestic Violence board announces the retirement of Yvette Waters as the executive director and the hiring of Marianne McKown to fill the position.

For 33 years, Waters has counseled victims of domestic violence beginning in Wyoming and then Elko and the surrounding communities with CADV. CADV began in 1980 and covers Elko, Eureka and White Pine counties.

Waters volunteered as a counselor with the organization after her family moved to Elko in 1987. In 1990, Waters, along with other board members, helped to plan a permanent shelter. “The community stepped up and supported Harbor House,” said Waters of Elko’s contributions that came from many organizations and entities including Newmont Mining Corp., the City of Elko, Elko County, and Barrick Gold Corp.

After seven years, $838,139 was raised for the shelter,”

During the past 30 years, Waters has been a volunteer, board member, and staff member at CADV. Waters has been the executive director of CADV since 1996, and due to health reasons she decided to retire. “Providing victims and their children safety and options has been my life’s work.

For me, my time at CADV has been more than a job, it has been my passion. I am filled with so many emotions as I leave the organization. My last ask of the community as the executive director is to continue to support CADV and Harbor House as you have in the past, the victims and children need you.”

“I have known Yvette for over 15 years and she is one of the most energetic and driven people I have met.

Her commitment to CADV and its mission has been unparalleled and she will be sorely missed,” said David Stanton, president of the CADV board.

The CADV board hired Marianne McKown to take Waters’ place.

McKown moved to Elko in 2002 as the crime and city reporter for the Elko Daily Free Press.

During her time with the paper, she wrote about domestic violence cases and this lead her to volunteer as a board member with CADV. She resigned from the board in 2012 because of work conflicts, but kept the organization and its mission close to her heart.

McKown moved up through the ranks at the Free Press and currently is the mining editor. After more than 14 years with the Elko Daily Free Press, she applied for the CADV executive director position.

“CADV and Harbor House are needed in this community,” McKown said. “My goal is to continue the organization’s work and to help it grow stronger.”

Ingredients:

4 tablespoons butter • half of a yellow onion, diced • 2 ears sweet corn • 2 large zucchini, sliced very thinly (about 4 cups) • 8 ounces sliced mushrooms •

1 tablespoon dried basil 1 teaspoon dried oregano • ½ teaspoon salt • 12 ounces shredded cheese (both Mozzarella and Swiss) • 4 eggs, beaten • •

Preparation: Preheat the oven to 375 degrees. Heat the butter in a large, deep skillet over medium high heat. Add the onions, zucchini, and mushrooms. While the veggies saute, cut the corn kernels off the cob. Add them to the pan and continue to saute until the veggies are soft, 5-10 minutes. Remove from heat.

Once the mixture has cooled for a few minutes, stir in the basil, oregano, salt, cheese, and the beaten egg. Line a pie pan (9-inch or larger) with parchment paper or just grease a pan with nonstick spray. Transfer the mixture to the pan. Arrange the top so the zucchini slices lay flat and look nice. Top with a little extra cheese for looks, cover with greased foil, and bake for 20 minutes. Remove foil and bake for an additional 5 minutes to brown the top. Let stand for 10-15 minutes before cutting into slices.

NOTES *It will bubble up a little bit as it bakes, so put a pan under to catch drips if it's really full. *you can sprinkle with fresh herbs like parsley and cilantro or even basil!

1 cup uncooked quinoa • 1 teaspoon extra virgin olive oil • 1 medium red onion, thinly sliced • 1 cup diced red bell pepper • 1 tablespoon minced garlic • 1 cup chopped roasted Hatch chiles (mild or hot) • 1 cup corn (fresh or frozen) •

1 tablespoon tomato paste 2 cups shredded rotisserie chicken •1 (15 oz) can black beans, no sodium added •1 (7¾ oz) can of your favorite salsa •½ cup water •1 cup shredded cheddar •C ilantro •L ime • •

Preparation: Preheat oven to 375F. Cook quinoa: Bring pot of water to a boil, add quinoa, and then lower heat to simmer. Cover, and cook until soft and liquid is absorbed, about 15 minutes. Heat a large nonstick skillet over med-high heat. Add oil and sauté onion until lightly browned, about 5 minutes. Add garlic and sauté for 1 min. Add rest of the vegetables and combine well. Add tomato paste. Add chicken. Transfer mixture to a medium bowl and stir in quinoa and beans. Add salsa and water to the same pan, bring to a boil, then reduce heat, and simmer for 5 minutes, stirring occasionally. Combine to the mixture. Pour the mixture into a 9 inch by 13 inch baking dish coated with cooking spray. Sprinkle with cheese. Bake for 15-20 minutes, until cheese is melted and bubbly. Serve with cilantro, sour cream, guacamole, etc.

In a large bowl, combine all of the ingredients except the pitas and mix well.

For the tortilla chips, combine the oil and paprika, then brush over both sides of the tortillas. Bake on a baking tray for 5 minutes, or until golden and crisp. Season well and set aside to cool, then break into pieces.

To make the soup, peel and chop the avocado. Peel and deseed the cucumber, reserving a whole 3cm piece to one side. Trim and roughly chop the spring onions, then pick and roughly chop the coriander leaves. Blend the avocado, cucumber, spring onions, coriander, stock, yogurt and green chili in a blender until smooth.

Season with lime juice, Tabasco, and a good pinch of sea salt and black pepper, then cover with saran wrap and put in the fridge to chill. Peel, deseed and finely chop the reserved cucumber, then finely slice the chili.

Once the soup is chilled, serve in small bowls topped with the tortilla chips, chopped cucumber, red chili and garlic chives. Finish with a drizzle of avocado oil, if you like.

On Friday, August 18th, Communities In Schools of Northeastern Nevada will give horse racing fans a thrilling evening of real race action, all for a great cause. As the local affiliate of the nation’s largest dropout prevention program, Communities In Schools of Northeastern Nevada provides students the resources and services they need to be successful in school and stay on track for graduation.

The Fifth Annual Nite At The Races will be held at The Red Lion Hotel and Casino, with doors opening at 6:00 PM and post time of 7:00 PM. The races are professionally filmed horse races shown on the big screen, allowing attendees to take in all the action and cheer for their favorites. Executive Director of CIS Northeastern Nevada, Melissa Schultz, says “For those anticipating the live horse races at the Elko County Fairgrounds, A Nite At The Races is a great warm up. It’s a wonderful opportunity for race fans to gather with friends and have a fun evening with food, games and dancing.”

Schultz explains that you will receive a ticket for each race and will be able to vote for your favorite horse in each of the 8 races throughout the evening. “Race winners have the opportunity to walk away with some great prizes,” says Shultz.

“Several local businesses who are supporters of Communities In Schools have donated gift baskets, gift certificates, and other various prizes to be given away at the event. In addition, the event will feature a prize for the best derby attire, multiple drawings throughout the night (tickets for drawings will be available for purchase), a door prize, and a silent auction with some exciting destination packages and other amazing prizes.

CIS is expecting close to 200 supporters at the event. The Red Lion Hotel and Casino will be preparing a delicious dinner. The bar will be stocked by Blach Distributing. The DJ will be ready to get the crowd out on the dance floor after the races. And the Selfie Spot will be there to capture your memories on film.

In 2015-2016, 81% of CIS Academy students improved their academics, while 91% of the CIS Academy 12th grade students graduated.

Many people may

consider the milkweed a weed and remove

it from their gardens

and property. Yet the

reason for planting and

nurturing milkweed

flies by in summer and is a favorite of many:

monarch butterflies.

Milkweed is often found growing along roadsides and ditch banks. Beneath its dull, gray-green exterior, milkweed is full of surprises. Inside the plant is a sticky white sap that contain several glucosidic substances called cardenolides that are toxic. It is most dangerous during the active growing season. Several species of milkweed are poisonous to range animals. The bitter taste warns away many of the animals and insects that try to eat its tender leaves. Certain insects, including monarch butterfly larvae, are immune to the toxin.

Adult monarch butterflies typically lay a single egg under a leaf near the top of the milkweed, its host plant. The eggs are about the size of a pin head and will hatch about four days after they were laid. The growing milkweed plant provides food and shelter for the larvae (caterpillar). The larvae will eat the leaves of the plant. It will take about 14 days for the caterpillar to mature and form its chrysalis.

The red milkweed beetle also utilizes the milkweed for its host plant. They also obtain some protection by incorporating toxins from the plant into their bodies. The beetle can become a problem for gardeners trying to establish milkweed in their gardens. The distinctive bold coloring of both the monarch and the red milkweed beetle advertise their inedibility.

Historically, the milkweed plant was valuable when grown for its medicinal properties. It caused an increase in perspiration which would help reduce fever. During World War II the silky material attached to its numerous seeds was used for filling in lifejackets and flight suits.

Seeds are contained in an attractive pod that bursts and sends seeds drifting through the air, borne by wind.

Populations of the monarch have plummeted by approximately 90 percent in just the last two decades. You can easily grow milkweed plants to attract the monarch and other flying creatures

Picking your cruise line wisely. Each cruise line has its own demographic that it caters to. When you think Disney, you think children. When you say Princess, you think “the Love Boat�. Remember this. The last thing you want on your romantic vacation is a deck full of screaming children in line for the waterslide while you are trying to relax. Do your research and make sure that particular cruise line is right for you.

Stateroom type and location. Probably the 2nd most important choice of your cruise will be picking your room type and location. Stateroom types are pretty much the same on each cruise line. You have interior rooms, which have no windows what so ever and are the cheapest in price, ocean view rooms, which will have a picture window, balcony rooms, which will provide you with your own private balcony and Suites, which will offer the most room inside, plus a private balcony as well. Make sure you choose what fits your budget,

but your vacation plans as well. You ALWAYS want to book at least a balcony room on an Alaskan cruise so you can sit outside in private, drink your coffee and see the glaciers as you sail by them. Deck location is also important. If you want peace and quiet make sure you choose a deck without access to bars, nightclubs or the kids clubs. Also a midship stateroom can make a big difference for someone who may become seasick.

Remember, cruises are not ALL-INCLUSIVE. There will be additional costs on a cruise, like excursions, gratuities and most importantly your bar bill. Drinks are not included on a cruise (although a few cruise line are trying this out on select sailings). Prepare yourself for this as drinks on a cruise can cost $10 each or more. On a 7 day cruise, that can really add up. Research the drink packages that the particular cruise line you are sailing has to offer and buy it if you think you are going to drink alcohol on a daily basis. You will save a lot of money by doing this. Also make sure you book your excursions with a reputable tour company or on the cruise lines direct website or on board the ship. That way you know you are guaranteed a spot on the tour and you know you will be brought back to the cruise ship on time.

The next match up put the Dodger’s Bellinger against Judge, where Bellinger hit 12 homers in his second round. Where baseball has seen the father-son duo on the derby stage before with Cory Seager and his dad or Robinson Cano and his dad, the scene never gets old watching a father and his son have their moment in front of tens of thousands of people.

Judge’s 23 home runs is marked as the third best Home Run Derby round ever behind Josh Hamilton’s 28 home run round in 2008 and Bobby Abreu’s 24 home run round in 2005. Judge became the first rookie to ever win the derby outright hitting a total of 47 home runs compared to just 29 outs. Judge hit a total four home runs over 500 feet and marked the two longest balls ever recorded by Statcast in regular season, post season, or past derbies with his 507 and 513 foot bombs.

Judge’s power was and is off of the charts. 2017 has much more to offer for Judge. Will he reach the 60 home run mark that we haven’t seen since Bonds or Sosa? Will he be the next great power hitter? 2017 may be the year that starts it all for Judge. Let’s just hope he’ll return to defend his derby title in D.C. next season.

Aside from giving you luminous skin, these peels can be useful in the treatment of mild dyschromias, acne, postinflammatory pigmentation, and many other skin issues 6. Tighten Up As you grow older, the skin on your face begins to appear looser and less defined. It is common to lose elasticity in your skin as you age, and the synthesis of

collagen slows down.

However, there are certain ways to boost collagen production, tighten up your skin, and get a more youthful complexion.

The creams, lotions, face masks, and chemical peels used during facials (whether botanical extracts or synthetics) have ingredients that help achieve this result.

According to one study, manual lymphatic drainage uses light, rhythmic, relaxing strokes, which give the appearance of a mini-facelift. 8. Increase Absorption Yet another advantage of regularly indulging in facials is that it preps your skin to absorb other beauty products more effectively.

You may have been spending a lot of time and money buying and trying out different skincare products (from serums to face creams).

However, in order for these products to actually make a difference, they have to absorb deep into the skin and work their magic. Facials help these products properly absorb by making your skin soft and supple.

There was another innovative study that supports this conclusion: a group of researchers “designed a microdevice that rapidly heats water by an electrical discharge” and ejects a “superheated steam jet at the skin surface.”

Laughter spilled from every corner of my office during the hour that I spent with Jill Schultz.

Moments of chair dancing, singing, and telling jokes led me to the conclusion that Jill lives each day to its absolute fullest.

Her positive energy and good attitude shined through our time together, and by the time that Jill left me for the day I felt as though I had made a new friend.

Jill was born in Kellogg, ID where she grew up and graduated high school. She grew up with two brothers and one sister where she is the second youngest sibling. She moved to Elko in the late 1990’s with her first husband. They moved to Elko because her husband received employment at one of the local gold mines. They planted roots and she spent the next years raising her three daughters, Kayla now 25, Kylie now 21 and Krystina who just graduated from Elko High School and is 18. Raising her girls and now having six grandchildren who range in age from six months to six years, has been the greatest accomplishment of her life.

In 2007 her first marriage ended and Jill focused her time on raising her family. It was in this year that she was also diagnosed with brain cancer. Jill has fought the disease since that year and has come out the bright, energetic woman that she is today. Being a

cancer survivor has left Jill with the motto to “Live, Love and Laugh.” It is important to love strong, laugh hard, but mostly live each day fully. In her own words, “I’ve been given a special gift to live to the fullest, and that is what I do,” Jill says with a smile across her face sitting next to her best friend Angelica. “I was born prematurely and have been fighting my whole life. This fight was just a different one.” It is a fight that we are happy she has survived ten years through.

Jill has not let her experience with cancer define her. Her life is so much more than being a cancer survivor. She spends all of her spare time helping members of our community however she can. This may take the form of helping friends run errands, taking a neighbor to a dr. appointment, or letting someone’s pets out during the day. She is so admired amongst the people she helps that one of her neighbors moved into an apartment a few doors down from her when she moved to a different area of town. He wanted to make sure that he could still be where she would be able to help him. Jill is a natural born care taker. It is something that she takes pride in and brings her joy. When she goes to bed every night she considers herself successful if she has made someone smile, done a good dead or favor for someone, or made some one laugh.

During the floods that affected our community Jill and her best friend Angelica wanted to make sure that they helped our community in any way that they could. Jill knew that she would not be able to be on the front lines filling sand bags, so she took some time to brainstorm other simple ways to help. The women took water and juice to the volunteers working hard to save homes.

They knew that some refreshment during the grueling work would be the pick me up that volunteers needed. Simple gestures can go so far when it comes to neighbors helping neighbors.

I know in my short time with Jill I was inspired to make a much larger impact on the people around me. Small things can be big things to someone we care about. If we all were a little more selfless and put forth the effort to be a great neighbor. Jill’s bright spirit and positive energy is a guiding force. Thank you Jill for all you do, and for making everyone around you smile.

Many pet owners have gone through the stress and pain of having a pet go missing. There is nothing worse than not knowing if you will ever see your little fur baby again. Microchips are a form of permanent identification that provides owners with some piece of mind. These microchips are small – the size of a grain of rice- and can never be removed.

By a simple subcutaneous implantation of the microchip into the skin between your pets’ shoulder blades, you are then secured to your pet via an indestructible, non-corruptible and unique method of pet ownership and re-location. According to the Home Again Microchip database, 1 in 3 household pets in the US will get lost, and 90% of un-identified pets never make it home. Currently, only 3-4% dogs, and less that 1% of cats, that are found, or reported and picked up, have microchips and are able to be traced back to their families. A simple and costeffective solution on a pet owner’s part could drastically increase these homeless stats for the better, and decrease the amount of lost pets that end up in our rescues and shelters.

Two of the most common microchip companies in the United States are 24 Hour PetWatch, and Home Again. Both of these companies also expand their services for clients and pets registered with them into pet insurance, travel assistance, and access to Pet Poison Control hotlines. Microchips in many cases are required for travel in and out of the country, and they a very highly recommended for those that travel a lot with their human family members. Home Again also offers microchip activated feeders and dog/cat doors, which are fantastic for multi-family, indoor and outdoor fur babies. A pet with either of these companies does not need to be registered with every microchip company.

When a pet is scanned and found to have a microchip, the number is specific to the microchip manufacturer. Your information is kept private by the company, because your pet is identified and registered by a unique ID number that is attached to your contact information in a secure database, and you are contacted by the microchip company when your pet is found.

Microchips are RFIDs, they are not GPS chips, so they emit their unique ID when scanned, and do not continuously emit a tracking signal. Thanks to advancements of shelter and hospital procedures, scanning for a microchip is the first step done when a lost/found pet is brought to the practice. The microchip is a permanent implant and does not need to be repeated, and is an easy 5-10 minute out-patient procedure performed by your veterinarian. Most fees include implant charges, and the first year of membership with the microchip company and lifelong registration for the life of the pet. It is still always recommended that your pet have a tag and harness or collar version of identification at all times, even when left at home, since this will always be the most traditional and visible version of pet ownership and identification.

The simple microchip can mean the difference between a pet making it home or ending up in a shelter which may mean life or death for our family pets that wander or escape from our homes.

The small cost of a microchip ensures the ability that diligent animal servants in our communities can return our dogs and cats home. When a pet is brought it is such a relief when we discover that a pet is microchipped. Here at our practice we have scanned pets that were from as far away as San Francisco, Arizona and Reno.
