- Gary Mansour -
The 2017 Spring Tour of Homes committee is honored to announce our featured recipient of this year’s Spring Home of Tours charity partner, the Gary Mansour Scholarship Fund.
Gary Mansour, who moved to the Elko area in the early 90’s was a dedicated and driven entrepreneur. His first enterprise was the opening and operating a Baskin Robbins franchise. He later purchased, owned and managed a trailer park. Shortly after selling the trailer park, Gary began to attend classes at Great Basin College (GBC) where he obtained his real estate license and ultimately earned a business degree. As an agent, Gary was a top producer earning a number or prestigious awards. Gary realized his professional dream when he acquired his broker’s license and purchased the local Century 21 franchise with
his business partner Gary Morfin. Gary was very passionate about the real estate industry. In addition to his own personal commitment to excellence, he wanted to give back to up and coming real estate students by teaching the same courses that were taught to him at GBC. While he was a successful businessman, his true pride and joy was his wife and children. At the young age of 46, Gary fought his final battle. His family and friends have developed the Gary Mansour Scholarship Fund in his memory to honor his commitment to the real estate industry and furthering the education and development of Elko County’s students. The Famous George George Fennemore, Manager of Growth at Cortez, appreciated it when the Stray Dog Pub and Café named a pizza after him, but he didn’t expect it to change his life. This is a story about love and pizza, passion and pepperoni, bliss and black olives. It begins in 1996, or to be more empirically correct, it dates back to the 1940s, which is when the Stray Dog Pub and Café was founded. For if there was no Stray Dog, there would have been no Famous George, and without the Famous George, love would not have blossomed.
5th Street in the city’s downtown core, it’s a small, wisp of a place, welcoming and cozy, with a Brunswick bar, 20 beers on tap and a wide selection of bourbon and scotch. Known initially as the Ritz and later the Copper Lounge, it took on the Stray Dog moniker in the mid-1990s and became a restaurant as well as a bar. One of the items on the menu was pizza.
The Stray Dog is one of the oldest establishments in Elko, Nevada. Located on

Stray Dog not long after it took on its new name. Originally from Virginia, Fennemore had moved west to attend the University of Arizona where he earned a doctorate in mathematics. By the mid-90s, he was living in Colorado but commuting to Elko where he worked on contract for Placer Dome. Quiet, friendly and whip smart, Fennemore had a penchant for pizza, so it was only a matter of time until he found his way to the Stray Dog. He soon began showing up every Thursday with colleagues Frank Carr, Kerry Hart and Loren Schubert. All four are Placer Dome alums who stayed with the company after it was acquired by Barrick in 2006. They still work for the company today. “There was less traffic and fewer restaurants and bars in those days,” says Fennemore, Manager of Growth at Cortez. “A lot of times it would just be us in the pub. We didn’t really need to specify orders; the bartender knew what we wanted.” A predilection for pesto What Fennemore usually wanted was pizza. His order never deviated: pepperoni, sausage, black olives and, instead of the standard red tomato sauce, a green pesto sauce. “Pesto just tastes better,” he says.
The order was off menu, but the Stray Dog was happy to comply. Within a short time, the bartenders were referring to Fennemore’s order as the George. Other patrons took note of the George, which was just different enough to be interesting. Word spread. The George became one of the Stray Dog’s most popular items. “Folks that didn’t know us would just call up and ask for a George pizza,” Fennemore says. The Famous George goes on Menu In 2003, Mike and Colette Reynolds purchased the Stray Dog. Fennemore quickly became a friend. “He is one of the sweetest guys in the world,” Colette says. “When you see George come in, you literally just smile. He’s that kind of guy.” While they often received special requests for pizza toppings, the Reynolds never added these concoctions to the menu despite being asked to numerous times. “We can’t do that,” Colette says. “Once you start, everybody’s going to want to do it and the menu will get too big.” But in 2006, the Reynolds made an exception. The George’s popularity had continued to grow and Fennemore was an institution at the Stray Dog who had literally consumed

hundreds of pizzas. They christened his pizza the Famous George. “George deserved it,” Colette says, noting that others continue to lobby for their pizzas to be immortalized on the menu, to no avail. “We’ve kind of left that spot solely for George. We’re kind of proud of that. We’re proud of him.” Love blossoms Fennemore has lived in Elko since 2003 and estimates he’s eaten more than 1,000 pizzas at the Stray Dog. Many patrons ask the wait staff who the Famous George is named after and, oftentimes, Fennemore is seated nearby. Introductions are made and this usually results in a short, friendly conversation. One day, however, in February of 2010 it led to something more. Melissa Crowder, a Texan who lived in Elko and worked as an accountant, had stopped by for dinner and spotted the Famous George on the menu. Her curiosity piqued, she asked who the pizza was named for. “He’s sitting right over there,” the bartender told her. Crowder went over and introduced herself. It was around Valentine’s Day, Fennemore recalls. He also remembers something else: “She was beautiful.” Weeks later Fennemore worked up the nerve to ask Melissa out. She agreed. Seven months later she agreed when Fennemore proposed. They were married in June 2011. The Reynolds attended the wedding. “George isn’t just a customer, he’s a dear friend,” Mike Reynolds says. Fennemore, Schubert, Kerry and Carr are all married now, but they still get together at the Stray Dog whenever they can. It’s a welcoming and cozy place where you can find good beer, food and friends. And if the stars align and you happen to like pesto on your pizza, you might just find your soul mate.

Ingredients:
8 cups chopped onions • 1/4 cup salted butter • 1 1/2 tbsp minced garlic • 1/4 cup flour • 1/2 cup whiskey • 8 cups beef broth • 2 bay leaves •
2 tsp thyme • 1-2 dashes Worcestershire sauce •S ea salt and pepper to taste -might need beef bouillon •
TOPPING: • French baguette • Mozzarella cheese
Preparation: In a large pot, over medium-high heat, add the butter and onions, stir. Brown the onions for 30-40 minutes, stirring often. If you find that the onions are sticking too much to the bottom, add more butter or a splash or two of the beef broth. Add the garlic and flour and stir for roughly a minute. Now the fun part, add the whiskey and scrape the bottom of the pan. Get all the bits and simmer the alcohol down for 8-10 minutes, over medium height. Next add the beef broth, bay leaves, thyme, Worcestershire sauce, sea salt, and pepper. Taste and if it's not rich add a heaping spoonful of beef bouillon. Simmer over medium heat for 35 minutes. PREHEAT OVEN TO 425F. Ladle the soup into French onion bowls, and top with the slices of the baguette. Layer on the cheese and bake for 5-10 minutes. Keep an eye on it so it doesn't burn, just until the cheese gets golden and bubbly. Estimated to make 10 cups.
Ingredients:
1( 8 oz) pkg cream cheese, room temperature • 2 1/2 cups shredded Irish cheddar cheese (or any sharp cheddar) • 1 teaspoon Dijon mustard • 2 tablespoons half & half or milk
sprinkle of kosher salt 1/4 cup Guinness draft beer •2 scallions, finely chopped •2 tablespoons finely chopped fresh parsley (and additional for garnish)
•
• •
Preparation Combine all ingredients in a bowl and stir to combine. For a minute, you'll be all, "Ew, this looks gross and it's not going to mix together!" Calm down. Keep stirring. It will. Transfer the dip to a serving bowl, cover, and refrigerate for at least an hour, or up to a few days. When you're ready to serve it, take it out of the fridge to let it soften a bit before serving, and garnish with a bit more chopped parsley or green onion. Serve with kettle-cooked potato chips (regular chips will crumble) or pretzel twists.

Ingredients:
3 cups low sodium or regular beef broth • 1 lb smoked sausages, cut into thin rounds • 1/2-lb thick-sliced good quality smoked bacon or turkey bacon, chopped into cubes • 2 lbs russet potatoes (about 6 potatoes), peeled and sliced into 1/2-inch thick rounds •
2 yellow onions, sliced into thin rounds • 3 large carrots, sliced into thin rounds (about 1-1/2 cups of carrot rounds) • salt and fresh ground pepper to taste • 2 tablespoons chopped fresh parsley •
Preparation: Preheat oven to 425F. In a large saucepan, combine beef broth, sliced sausages, and bacon; bring to a boil. Reduce heat to low and simmer for 10 minutes. Transfer sausages and bacon to a bowl and reserve the broth. Lightly grease a Dutch oven or casserole dish with cooking spray. Spread one-third of the potatoes on the bottom of the casserole dish. Arrange 1/3 of the onions and carrots over the potatoes, and season with a little salt and pepper. Spread a layer of the previously prepared sausages and bacon over the layer of onions. Continue to layer ingredients two more times, seasoning with salt and pepper as you go along. Pour the reserved broth over the entire dish. Cover with a lid and bake in the oven for 40 minutes. Remove cover and if mixture looks dry, add 1/2-cup water. Continue to bake for 15 minutes, or until lightly browned on top. Remove from oven and let stand 5 minutes. Ladle into bowls and garnish with fresh parsley. Serve.
Ingredients: 1 cup butter, softened 1 ½ cups sugar • 2 eggs • 3 tablespoons Irish whiskey • 2 ¼ cups flour • 1 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon baking soda 2 cups pecans, very roughly chopped • 8 oz bacon, cooked until crisp,

Maple Sugar (can be replaced with brown sugar)
•
Preparation: Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F. In the bowl of a standing mixer cream together the butter and the sugar until fluffy and lightened in color. Add the eggs one at a time and beat well after each addition. Add the whiskey and beat to combine. In a separate bowl combine the flour, salt and baking soda. Add the dry ingredients to the batter and mix until just incorporated. Then add the bacon pieces and pecans and mix again, until just combined. Scoop the cookie dough by the tablespoonful onto two sheet pans (either lined with parchment paper or a silicate mat) and sprinkle a generous amount of maple sugar on top of each mound of dough. Bake for 13-15 minutes at 350 degrees. Let cookies cool on a wire rack. Repeat with the remaining dough.

cedar waxwing • Contributed by Lois Ports for the Bristlecone Audubon Chapter •
Last month I mentioned that Cedar Waxwings will travel with flocks of American Robins in the winter. Cedar Waxwings are a social bird that form flocks year around. They get the name Cedar from their habit of eating the juniper berries in fall and winter. The name "waxwing" comes from the waxy red secretions found on the tips of the secondaries of some birds. The exact function of these tips is not known, but they may help attract mates. Cedar Waxwings are a medium sized bird. (Length: 7.25”. Wingspan: 12”. Weight: 1.1 oz.) Males and females are identical. They have silky brown color on their head, back and crest fading to a soft gray on the wings. The belly is pale yellow and under
38

the tail is white. The gray tail is tipped in yellow. They have a distinctive dark face mask. They are one of the few North American birds that specializes in eating fruits year around. They will feed while perched on a twig by plucking the fruit and eating it whole. Other times they will briefly hover below a group of berries and grab one. Cedar Waxwings will also eat tree buds and petals off of flowers such as apple blossoms. When insects are abundant they will include these in their diet to add some protein. Brown-headed cowbirds that hatch from eggs laid in a Cedar Waxwing nest often do not survive because their chicks can’t fully develop on the heavy fruit diet.
W W W. E V E R Y T H I N G E L K O . C O M
Occasionally during the winter Bohemian Waxwings will migrate into our area from the Boreal forests. They are similar in appearance to Cedar Waxwings but are larger. (Length: 8.25”. Wingspan: 14.5”. Weight: 2 oz.) They have a gray belly, rufous color under the tail, and white wing markings. If you are interested in learning more about both the flora and fauna of our area you can send an email to BristleconeAudubon@ gmail.com to be put on our newsletter mailing list or find us on Facebook under Bristlecone Audubon Chapter.

National league West Predictions
Ty Blach & Eduardo Nunez, sfgate.com
CONTRIBUTED BY ADRIAN BOWLES RENO, NEV Trevor Story, rantsports.com
Baseball is almost here! Each team in the National League West has their pitchers and catchers reporting to spring training no later than February 15 and their position players reporting in by February 20. With the 2017 season suddenly coming around the corner both Baseball Prospectus and FanGraphs released their projections for the upcoming season. And man do they make the Los Angeles Dodgers look good. Baseball Prospectus isn’t only projecting the Dodgers winning the National League West; they have them being the best team in all of baseball winning 98 games with 64 loses. It doesn’t come as that much of a surprise when the Dodgers were able to win 91 games in the 2016 season. FanGraphs also has the Dodgers projected to win 95 games; but trailing behind the Cubs, Red Sox, Indians, Rangers, and Nationals in the whole league. What appears as the biggest surprise is each projection puts the San Francisco Giants eight games behind the Dodgers in the division. In the 2016 season the Giants finished the season with 87 wins being only four games behind the Dodgers. The projections either have the Giants playing the New York Mets or the Washington Nationals in the National League Wild Card game.
Looking at both depth charts the Dodgers definitely look like the better team on paper. They have the returning Rookie of the Year in Corey Seager. They have arguably the best pitcher in the National League in Clayton Kershaw They were able to resign one of the National League’s best third basemen in Justin Turner while keeping their All-Star Closer Kenley Jansen. Then they were able to get Logan Forsythe to replace the aging Chase Utley among many more of their great players. Yes the Dodgers pitching will always be in question, but if Kershaw can continue to put the team on his back like he has in the past they should do ok. Julio Urias and Hyun-Jin Ryu may come to be a big part of the 2017 season for the Dodgers too. Ryu was coming off an injury in 2016, which limited his playing time to just one start where he gave up eight hits and six runs. If Ryu can resemble the pitcher he once was in 2013 and 2014 where he won 14 games each, he might find himself in the starting rotation again. The Dodgers also have 20 year-old Julio Urias who had a record of 5-2 with a 3.39 earned run average in 2016 after being called up on May 27.

Urias also went 1-1 in the 2016 post season with a 6.35 ERA. For a 20 year-old it looks like there is a lot of potential for him. The Dodgers current situation looks great but maybe it’s the Giants departures that make them look a little shaky heading into the 2017 season. The loss of Matt Duffy was probably the biggest hit the Giants will have to take defensively. He was ranked above average for defensive ability at third base in 2016 whereas Eduardo Nunez and Connor Gillaspie both rank below average. Duffy was traded to the Tampa Bay Rays last season for Matt Moore. Hopefully Moore will prove he was worth it in 2017 as a consistent starter in the rotation. This will also mark the first season since 2012 where we won’t be seeing Angel Pagan in the outfield for the Giants. Yes, he wasn’t the best outfielder to begin with but are his replacements going to be able to fill his shoes? The Giants are set to have Mac Williamson start in leftfield with Jarrett Parker being a primary back up in the outfield. Neither player had a batting average above .240 in 2016 yet both players fielding percentages were close to 1.000. Javier Lopez also announced his retirement on February 8, so Giants’ Manager Bruce Bochy is going to have to find another lefty specialist to fill Lopez’ shoes after his seven years with the ball club. Lopez went 17-8 with a 2.47 ERA during his 7 seasons in San Francisco. As always, watching the Dodgers and the Giants rip each other apart for the first place spot will be very exciting to see. Another interesting result that came from the projections for the National League West is that FanGraphs projected the Colorado Rockies to finish in third in the division whereas Baseball Prospectus had the Arizona Diamondbacks finishing with that rank. Looking at both teams depth charts it seem clear why FanGraphs chose the Rockies over the Diamondbacks. Look at all the big names on the Rockies: • Ian Desmond: 2x All-Star, 3x Silver Slugger award winner • DJ LeMahieu: All-Star, Gold Glove award winner, NL batting Champion • Trevor Story • Nolan Arenado: 2x All-Star, 4x Gold Glove award winner, 2x Silver Slugger award winner, 2x NL home run leader, 2x NL RBI leader

MARCH 2017
W W W. E V E R Y T H I N G E L K O . C O M
• Carlos Gonzalez: 3x All-Star, 3x Gold Glove award winner, 2x Silver Slugger award winner, NL batting champ 2010 • Charlie Blackmon: All-Star, Silver slugger award winner • Greg Holland: 2x All-Star, World Series Champion, Mariano Rivera award
Now lets look at the Diamondbacks: • Paul Goldschmidt: 4x All-Star, 2x Gold Glove champion, 2x Silver Slugger award winner, NL Hank Aaron award, NL home leader, NL RBI leader • A.J. Pollock: All-Star, Gold Glove award winner • Zach Greinke: 3x All-Star, 2x MLB ERA leader, AL Cy Young award, 3x Gold Glove award winner, Silver Slugger award winner • Patrick Corbin: All-Star
It seems clear why FanGraphs was able to draw this conclusion about the Rockies taking third place in the division. But it makes you think about how Baseball Prospectus could’ve ranked the Diamondbacks that high in the division. The Diamondbacks only finished with 69 wins last season and were 22 games behind the Dodgers. The D-backs lost shortstop Jean Segura in the Taijuan Walker trade which raised many flags. Segura had his best season yet in 2016 batting .319 with 20 homers while Walker finished 2016 going 8-11 with a 4.22 ERA on the mound. The Diamondbacks were in need of pitching and that moves seems like it might be able to payoff. The Mariners look like they got the bigger end of the stick in Segura though. The Diamondbacks have to put all of their faith in their first basemen Paul Goldschmidt and their ace Zach Greinke to help carry their team through this season with their young roster. The Rockies only finished 16 games behind the Dodgers with a 75-87 record in 2016. The Rockies failed to get starting pitching this offseason but the hype in successfully signing Ian Desmond and Greg Holland might be the kick-start the Rockies needed. The Rockies also have two or three more qualified Veterans than the Diamondbacks. That battle for third place in the NL West might be just as fun to watch as the battle for first this season. As for the Padres, we’ll let them do their thing in the bottom of the NL West as usual.

Airstream Land Yacht
[2]
The most luxurious creation to ever come from Airstream, the Land Yacht derives its luxury from the collaboration of Italian Riva yacht designer Mauro Micheli. Incorporating elements from the finest luxury watercraft, inside, the Land Yacht flourishes with elegant curved cabinetry and sumptuous padded surfaces with detail-stitching, complementing the sleek, streamlined styling that cleverly hides a host of practical features and premium upgrades. At 28 feet long and only 8.5 feet wide, the Land Yacht packs a whole lot of traditional Airstream in the very well designed living space. But what makes Airstream so gadgety? It may be the Alcoa aluminum exterior that glistens for years never to wear out or the solar option. Maybe the heat pump that circulates thru the walls for a more even heat or the electric leveling dining room table. Or maybe its just the overall attention to detail that brings this trailer together in a unique way.

PLANNING YOUR
riviera maya TROPICAL VACATION Contributed by Sue Bradford of Journeys Around the World
Never to be confused with its neighbor to the north Cancun, the Riviera Maya on Mexico's coast is a much more peaceful option for your vacation. But it's not alI rest and relaxation here. The Riviera Maya does also offer some amazing attractions to keep you busy on your vacation.

MARCH 2017
About an hour south of Cancun, lies the Riviera Maya of Mexico. This area is known for some of the most amazing beach resorts on the Caribbean Sea, many of them all-inclusive and adults-only. This makes the area perfect for a honeymoon or romantic vacation. Many resorts feature walk out beach front rooms and recently the first over the water bungalows in Mexico were introduced here. With features like water sports and nightly entertainment, some chose to never leave their resort. But if you do care to explore this historic area, here are a few things for you to see. Visit the Mayan ruins of the Chichen-ltza or Tulum. Both equally historic and breathtaking it their own way. The Chichen-ltza is one of the most famous of the Mayan ruins. A full day of travel would be required to visit here, but the trip would be well worth it. Whereas the ruins in Tulum are lesser known, but just as important as this was where the Mayans were last known to inhabit the area. Set on the beaches of the Caribbean Sea, the views from here are nothing short of spectacular. Go deep underground and explore the Cenotes in the area. A Cenote is a natural pit or sinkhole resulting in the collapse of limestone bedrock that
W W W. E V E R Y T H I N G E L K O . C O M
exposes groundwater underneath. The Mayans used these Cenotes are a primary water source and there are over 6000 in the Riviera Maya area. You can snorkel in them, scuba dive into them, hike down them and even tube through them. How amazing would that be? Visit the famous Xcaret park, also known as the Disneyland of Mexico. If discovering Mayan culture and having some adventure at the same time sounds like something you might enjoy, then maybe a day trip to Xcaret park is right

up your alley. Ride the Paradise River cruise to the Mayan Village, or travel deep to the Caves of the Mayan Village. Explore a winery or swim with a dolphin. Any of these options and more are possible. The choice is up to you. As you can see there are many reasons why a trip to the Riviera Maya may be right for you. As always, if you require more information on this or any other vacation location, please contact me, Sue Bradford, at 775-781-9573.

Pharmaceutical vs. Cosmetic Grade Products
W W W. E V E R Y T H I N G E L K O . C O M
The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) divides skin care products into two separate categories: cosmetic and pharmaceutical. Pharmaceutical grade products you apply topically penetrate through the layers of the epidermis and affect the function and structure of the skin. Pharmaceutical products undergo rigorous testing that can go on for more than 10 years and cost millions of dollars. Pharmaceutical grade products are only available through a licensed professional. These products not only contain a higher percentage of active ingredients, but a higher quality of each ingredient. According to the FDA, Pharmaceutical grade products are required to be 99% pure, where Cosmetic grade products are only required to be 70% pure. Active ingredients are those that can make a change in your skin such as (reducing wrinkles, pigmentation, alleviate acne, etc.). The FDA defines cosmetic grade products as “articles intended to be rubbed, poured, sprinkle, or sprayed on, introduced into, or otherwise applied to the human body or any part thereof for cleansing, beautifying, promoting attractiveness, or altering the appearance…” Cosmetics are not required to prove the claims they make, but they are allowed to cite “scientific studies” of the ingredients being used in their products. This means that the formula doesn’t technically have to prove efficacy or safety, but it can contain an ingredient that may cause activity in the skin.
Supporting the Community -Since 1972!
You’ll find countless cosmetic grade companies out there who will try to draw you in using fancy buzz words, or catchy phrase: “Clinically Proven,” “Clinically Tested,” or “Dermatologist-Tested.” It is important to approach these words and phrases with caution because cosmetic companies are not required to prove efficacy claims, and the special “active ingredient” they’re advertising only has to appear somewhere on the ingredient list – ingredients are listed in content order, from highest to lowest percentages. So if you see that “active” ingredient toward the bottom of the list you know you’re only getting a tiny percentage, which most likely not enough to be effective.

Over-the-counter, or cosmetic grade products are manufactured in large batches, and they contain almost as many preservatives as they do “active” ingredients.

Principles
behind the ideal protein weight loss method The body has three sources of energy from which it draws to meet its metabolic needs. Carbohydrates, Muscle, and fat. Chronologically, the body will first draw on its carbohydrate reserve before turning to muscle and fat. During the weight loss phases of the protocol, we limit carbohydrate intake to encourge the body to turn to its fat and muscle components for energy. By eating high biological protein foods, the protocol helps to support muscle mass and teaches dieters how to develop smarter eating habits and lifestylke choices so they can maintain a stable weight after weight loss is achieved.

Ways to Improve Your Workspace Contributed by Dr. Todd Wendell of Ruby Mountain Chiropractic (775)777-3033 | www.ElkoChiropractor.com
As many of us spend the majority of our day behind a desk, it’s important to make sure your workspace is friendly to your back and body. Here’s how you can improve the ergonomics of your office in just four easy steps. 1. The Chair Get a posture friendly chair that has a comfortable cushion, an adjustable height lever, arm support and the ability to swivel or roll. If you sit for hours on end, try setting an alarm on your phone or computer to get up and move for a few minutes each hour.
2. The Screen Elevate your screen to eye level. Most of us who work behind a desk have some sort of computer involvement, and it’s important to make sure your head and neck do not tilt too far downward while completing tasks on your screen. Consider purchasing a laptop stand or stacking books until your device is level to your eyes. 3. The Accessories If you work on a laptop regularly, consider getting a real keyboard and mouse as your hands spend thousands of hours each year resting on them. A handheld mouse is more ergonomically designed than a built-in while offering improved functionality and feel. 4. The Desk Consider a standing desk. If you’re not sitting, it’s hard to slouch. A standing desk can help your body benefit from staying upright and gives your lower half a break. This can help lessen nerve pressure and the development of poor sitting posture.
How else can you ensure a properly aligned spine? Give us a call to schedule an appointment.

PROPANE SAFETY AND
POWER OUTAGES C ONTR IBUTE D BY J U L I E A . K RA U S, WEST ERN STAT ES P RO PA N E
Power outages can occur during any season and can range from being a simple inconvenience to, in some cases, a life-threatening situation. Almost any type of weather-related event can cause a power outage, ranging from snow and ice storms to thunderstorms, hurricanes, and extreme heat.
10 1
Things You Can Do to Keep Your Family Safe
If your home uses propane, there are a few simple steps you can take to keep your family safe and avoid potential dangers.
Create an emergency preparedness plan and review it with everyone in your family. Post a list with contact information for your propane retailer and emergency services (fire department, etc.) along with instructions for turning off propane, electricity, and water. If you do need to turn off your propane, contact a service technician to inspect your propane system prior to turning it back on.
2
Consider installing UL-listed propane gas detectors and carbon monoxide detectors. These detectors provide you with an additional measure of security. Be sure to follow the manufacturer’s instructions regarding installation, location, and maintenance.
3
Prepare a family disaster supply kit with several days’ worth of water and canned foods along with a can opener, extra clothes and blankets, flashlights, and batteries. Include a batterypowered radio so you can stay informed as conditions change.

If a power outage occurs due to severe weather-related condition, tune in on a battery-powered radio for instructions from local authorities. It’s recommended to turn off all the lights and appliances on your property that were operating before the outage occurred (with the exception of at least one light – to help signal when the power returns). This will reduce any type of power surge from occurring once the electricity returns.
If severe weather-related conditions cause the power outage, it is important to use caution in the area surrounding your home or farm. Check the entire area for downed power lines, damaged gas lines, or damage to your propane tank. High winds and severe weather can move, shift, or damage gas lines and tanks. If it is dark, use flashlights, not candles. Immediately call your local utility company or propane retailer if any of these hazards exist. Do not attempt repairs yourself.
5
8
Use extreme caution when operating portable generators. During power outages, some people may choose to use a portable generator, allowing them to keep food from spoiling, computers and other appliances working, and, in some cases, life-supporting medical devices operating. Never use a portable generator (gasoline, diesel, or propane) indoors or in an enclosed area such as a basement, garage, shed, or tent. This can result in carbon monoxide poisoning or death.
Inspect your propane appliances for water or other damage, if it is safe to do so. A power outage can cause appliances such as a refrigerator or freezer to leak water, or a sump pump to stop working, which may cause propane appliances to get wet. If the appliances have electric components and have been exposed to water, they can create a fire hazard. Do not ever turn on a light switch, use any power source, or inspect your household appliances while standing in water. This can result in electrocution.
6
Never use outdoor propane appliances indoors or in enclosed areas, particularly during a power outage. This can result in carbon monoxide poisoning or death. These include such appliances as outdoor portable heaters, barbecue grills, and portable generators. Only use appliances indoors that are designed and approved for indoor use. It’s also important that you never store, place, or use a propane cylinder indoors or in enclosed areas such as a basement, garage, shed, or tent.
9
Schedule a time for a qualified service technician to perform a complete inspection of your propane system if you suspect any of your propane appliances, equipment, or vehicles have been under water or damaged, or you have turned off your gas supply. Never use or operate appliances, equipment, or vehicles, or turn on the gas supply, until your system has been inspected by a qualified service technician. Do not attempt repairs yourself.
Exercise sound judgment. As with any challenging situation, your composure during power outages and other severe weather events will ensure you don’t take unnecessary risks or pose any additional dangers to your family and home. Stay calm; use radios, television, and telephones to stay informed and connected. If any questions arise, contact your propane retailer or local fire department.
Taking these 10 simple steps can help promote safety all season long. With a little advance planning, you and your family can be prepared for unpredictable events such as power outages.
For more information regarding all the benefits of propane, contact your propane service provider or Western States Propane.

Put Your

FORK FORWARD CELEBRATING NATIONAL NUTRITION MONTH
Contributed by Courtney Nalivka, Clinical Dietitian at Northeastern Nevada Regional Hospital
National Nutrition Month is an education campaign organized annually in March by the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. The campaign focuses attention on the importance of making informed food choices and developing sound eating and physical activity habits.
The theme for this year’s National Nutrition Month is "Put Your Best Fork Forward,” which reminds us that each bite counts. Making just small shifts in our food choices can add up over time. These small changes are much easier to sustain over a lifetime than being restrictive or following a “fad diet” for a short period of time and then resuming our original behaviors. The 2015-2020 Dietary Guidelines for Americans suggest starting with small changes in order to make healthier lasting changes you can enjoy. So whether you are planning meals to prepare at home or making selections when eating out, Put Your Best Fork Forward to develop a healthy eating lifestyle for you and your family. This year’s key messages include: • Create an eating style that includes a variety of your favorite, healthful foods. Use www.ChooseMyPlate. gov to plan meals that are healthful and portion controlled. Include more fruits and vegetables in your diet aiming for at least half your plate to consist of these nutrient-dense foods. Challenge yourself to eat at least 50% of your grains from a whole grain. This includes whole grain breads, rice, pastas, and cereals. Aim for low-fat or fat-free dairy products

and include a variety of lean protein, including plantbased proteins, in your meals. The more variety of healthful foods you have in the diet, the broader spectrum of nutrients you will provide your body. • Practice cooking more at home and experiment with healthier ingredients. This is a great opportunity to get the whole family involved. Let each person take a turn at planning a new meal and preparing it at home. Try taking your favorite recipe and modifying it to be healthier. For example, substitute unsweetened applesauce for the butter, use low fat milk instead of cream or whole milk, switch to whole grain pasta instead of refined pasta. You can also change the way the food is cooked. If the original recipe calls for frying, try baking or grilling instead. You’ll find you are eating something that is much healthier for you but is still something you can enjoy. I don’t think Grandma would mind if her famous chicken wings were baked instead of fried. Visit www.eatingwell.com for healthy recipes according to your preferences. • How much we eat is as important as what we eat. Eat and drink the right amount for you, as ChooseMyPlate encourages us to do. We all have

different needs that are based on our height, weight, age, gender, and activity level. Even too much of a healthy food can lead to a larger caloric intake than what we need. You can use the SuperTracker tool on www.choosemyplate.gov to find a meal plan, including appropriate caloric amounts of each food group that is recommended for your body and goals specifically. • Find activities that you enjoy and be physically active most days of the week. A healthy lifestyle not only includes proper eating habits but also getting regular physical activity. This doesn’t have to be done using fancy equipment or paying for a gym membership. Using your own body weight in the comforts of your home works just fine. Don’t have time for 30 or 60 minutes of exercise? Try breaking it up into three 10-minute sessions. You’ll reap the same benefits. It is recommended to aim for 150 minutes of moderate intensity exercise per week. So find the schedule and exercises that work for you and just get moving. Remember, anything is better than nothing. Behavior change with exercise should also be done in small steps to avoid over exertion, injury, or burnout. If you have any health conditions, make sure you get clearance from your doctor before starting an exercise program. • Manage your weight or lower your health risks by consulting a Registered Dietitian Nutritionist. RDNs can provide sound, easy-to-follow, personalized nutrition advice to meet your lifestyle preferences and health-related needs. You can also attend one of the free nutrition education classes offered at Northeastern Nevada Regional Hospital on a monthly basis. Call 748-2094 for more information about setting up a one-on-one consult or for a list of upcoming classes.

TRY PROLOZONE THERAPY
INJURED LIGAMENTS CAUSE PAIN Ligaments are the structural “rubber bands” that hold the bones, joints, and intervertebral discs together. Ligaments can become weak or injured from injury, excessive use, or surgery, and often do not heal back to their original strength and tightness. When this happens, it puts a severe strain on the areas that the ligaments are supposed to be holding together, resulting in pain and arthritis in the bones, discs, and joints which are affected. Also, ligaments themselves have many nerve endings which can provide an additional source of pain. 80

WHAT IS PROLOZONE THERAPYTM? Prolozone Therapy is a form of non-surgical ligament and joint reconstruction pioneered by Dr. Shallenberger, and is a permanent treatment for many kinds of chronic pain. Prolozone Therapy is derived from the Latin word “proli” which means to proliferate, regenerate, and rebuild. Prolozone Therapy is so named because the treatment uses ozone to cause the proliferation, regeneration, and rebuilding of new ligament and cartilage tissue in areas where they have become weak.
treatment
knee, and much more.
HOW DOES IT WORK? Prolozone Therapy involves the injection of ozone in and around ligaments where they attach to the bone. The injected ozone increases the blood supply and flow of healing nutrients. More importantly, it also stimulates the deposition and activity of fibroblasts and chondroblasts. These cells synthesize the collagen and cartilage that the body uses to repair damaged ligaments and joints. This increase in cellular repair activity strengthens and tightens the injured tissues; thereby stabilizing the area, and removing the cause of the pain. WHY IS OZONE USED? Ozone is a naturally-occurring, highly reactive molecule consisting of three atoms of oxygen. Because ozone is so reactive, it is able to stimulate fibroblastic and chondroblastic activity to an almost unbelievable extent. This high level of reactivity, combined with the innate safety of oxygen, makes ozone the ideal therapeutic molecule.
Morning Star Health Center WHAT CAN I EXPECT? The response to treatment varies from person to person, and depends upon one’s healing ability and level of injury. Some people may only need one or two treatments, while others may need as many as six or seven. Once you begin treatment, the doctor can analyze how you are responding, and will then will be able to give you an accurate estimate of what you can expect from further treatments. The injection process is repeated every 1-2 weeks until maximum improvement is noted. Prolozone Therapy typically results in a complete absence of symptoms, even in severe pain conditions that have been present for years. And, the most amazing thing about it is that the results usually represent a permanent fix. WHAT CONDITIONS ARE TREATED? Back and neck pain with or without degenerative disk disease, shoulder pain from rotator cuff injuries, and osteo-arthritis of the hips, knee and spine are the most commons ailments treated with Prolozone Therapy. Prolozone Therapy is also excellent for many other types of musculo-skeletal pain, including fibromyalgia, carpal tunnel syndrome, TMJ syndrome, sciatica, plantar fasciitis, neuromas, tennis elbow, and virtually any sports injuries. It can be especially effective in treating areas that have previously been operated on because of the significant injury that occurs to ligaments during surgery.

Community in Schools of Northeastern Nevada team
CONTRIBUTED BY SHABONYA DUT TON OF STATE FARM, WRIT TEN BY KELSIE CREAMER

Community in Schools is an organization that focuses on providing resources for local students. Their services range from hunger prevention, health and Wellness and counseling. Community in Schools objective is to “Surround students with a community of support, empowering them to stay in school and achieve in life.” It sounds all too simple...unfortunately, Nevada has seen an overwhelming student drop out increase over the years and currently only 70% of Nevada’s high school students graduate. The need for Community in Schools of Northeastern Nevada was evident, and so the branch was created in 2007 and they officially started their battle to combat our drop out statistics, help provide students with resources to overcome their everyday obstacles and provide opportunities for success.
Elementary, Maria Ruiz at Flag View Intermediate, Alison Klekas at Adobe Middle School, Trisha Webb and April Wilson at Spring Creek High School, Amanda Allen and David Horn at Elko High School and Maria Dorado at West Wendover Elementary. This group works to pin point the challenges that students may be facing and develop a plan to help overcome them. What CIS does for our youth is far beyond what most assume, they are not just a group that focuses on one portion of a child's situation. They believe in “The Five Basics” every child needs and deserves, 1. A one-on-one relationship with a caring adult, 2. A safe place to learn and grow, 3. A healthy start and a healthy future, 4. A marketable skill to use upon graduation, 5. A chance to give back to peers and community.
Community in Schools current board is compromised of 3 directors and a manager, Sara Goicoechea who is the CIS program director, Caitlin Devine their program manager, Melissa Schultz their executive director and Linda Quandt their associate program director. Community in Schools also referred to as CIS has nine site coordinators that work with students on a case management basis, Jessica Russell at Southside Elementary, Melissa Garcia at Northside
In the 2015-2016 School year CIS was able to provide 10,189 backpacks of weekend food that was sent home with children in need from over 17 different schools in the Elko and Lander county area, 142 articles of winter clothing were distributed, 55 students attended 352 teen counseling sessions, 82 hygiene packs were provided to underprivileged students, 481 students were managed by CIS staff, and countless immunizations and vaccines

were given. The results? 81% of students improved their academics, 73% improved their attendance, 78% improved their school behavior, attitude and commitment to school and 91% of high school seniors graduated! What CIS provides for our youth is what every child deserves, the tools to succeed in every aspect of their life and a positive start. We are all one catastrophic life event away from having our lives altered completely, too often we forget that their is no age limit when it comes to disaster. Every day a child's life changes and it is completely out of their control...thankfully, we can find piece of mind in knowing that Community in Schools is there to turn to when these children are in need. To the CIS team, thank you....thank you for taking work home with you, for putting your heart into what you do, giving our youth the best shot possible, providing them a safe and loving place when they need most, and for giving our kids a second chance when everyone else has given up on them. You play such and important role in each childs life. You are every part of each pivotal moment these kids have and help change their future for the better. We are so grateful for all that you do and all of the positivity you put back into our community. You are all magnificent Good Neighbors!
