Nevada Association of Employers has gathered a distinguished panel of professionals to provide general guidelines for employers and address issues including: Should employers revise their drug & alcohol policies? Should employers drug test employees who possess valid medical marijuana cards? Are employers required to accommodate employee marijuana use? How do employers determine if an employee is "impaired"? Cheryl Bishop www.artworksbycheryl.com Original Artwork Featured | Elko County Art Cooperative 407 Railroad Street, Elko, NV | 775-758-8170
Cheryl Bishop received her Bachelor of Arts degree in Art Education from Adams State University, taught by renown painter Steve Quiller and benefitting from extensive studies in Sculpture working with Cloyd Snook. Cheryl’s unique style has developed through her rich life lived in Colorado and Nevada ranching and farming communities and a life time working with horses and livestock. Cheryl brings first hand knowledge of Western Culture into her every work. Training her own horses, not only does she love and understand the noble animals, she is inclined to notice every detail of their individual personality
and health. These insights reflect in her paintings, and lend a sense of truth and perception that is lacking or perhaps misunderstood within much contemporary western genre. Her subjects often focus on women, children, horses, western life, and culture. That enables her to paint and sculpt topics that touch her personally and gives her the opportunity to creatively share her experiences, touch the viewer, and tug at their heart with nostalgia. Cheryl hopes her audience will gain a unique understanding that helps them connect to the message, energy, culture, and beauty of the untamed West expressed in her art.

The Best Paleo Lasagna Recipe & photo courtesy of www.aspicyperspective.com
Recipe & photo courtesy of www.aspicyperspective.com
Ingredients:
1 1/2 cups uncooked wild rice • 1 1/2 cups sliced carrots • 1 cup chopped onion • 1 cup chopped red bell pepper • 1 cup sliced celery • 3 garlic cloves, minced • 4 cups chicken broth •
3 teaspoons cajun seasoning, divided • 1 3/4 - 2 pounds chicken breast •8 ounces shredded pepper jack cheese • 8 ounces low fat cream cheese • 1/2 cup sliced almonds • 1 tablespoon chopped parsley •
Preparation: Preheat the oven to 400 degrees F. Place the wild rice, carrots, onion, bell pepper, celery, garlic, and 1 teaspoon cajun seasoning in a 9 X 13 inch baking dish. Pour 4 cups chicken broth in the baking dish and stir. Cover tightly with foil and bake for 80 minutes. Meanwhile, cut the chicken breast into small bite-sized pieces. (Less than 1 inch cubes.) Sprinkle the remaining 2 teaspoons cajun seasoning over the chicken and toss to coat. Shred the pepper jack, and cut the cream cheese into small cubes. Once the rice comes out of the oven, take the foil off and toss the chicken, shredded cheese, and cream cheese cubes into the baking dish. There will still be a little broth at the bottom of the baking dish. Toss well, so the cream cheese can turn the broth into a creamy sauce. Sprinkle the sliced almonds over the top and place the casserole back into the oven for 20-25 minutes, until the almonds are toasted and the chicken pieces are cooked through. Garnish with chopped parsley and serve warm.
Ingredients:
For the Cashew “Cheese”: •2 cups raw cashews •1 /2 cups nutritional yeast •1 /2 cup water •2 tablespoons lemon juice •1 garlic clove •2 teaspoons Italian seasoning •1 teaspoon sea salt
For the Meat Sauce: • 1 pound grass-fed beef • 1 pound organic pork sausage • 1 large onion, chopped • 2 garlic cloves, minced • 4 cups marinara For the Paleo Lasagna: 6 fresh zucchini • 1 small head cauliflower • 1/2 teaspoon sea salt •
Preparation Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F. Brown the meat, breaking into small pieces with a wooden spoon. Once it's mostly cooked, add the chopped onions and garlic. Saute for 2-3 min, then mix into the ground meat and saute another 2 min. Pour the marinara into the pot. Salt and pepper as needed. Turn off the heat. Place cauliflower in the food processor with 1/2 t salt. Pulse until broken up into small rice-sized pieces. Dump the cauliflower out onto a paper towel to allow moisture to be drawn out. Wipe out the food processor before adding the cashews and all other "cheese" ingredients. Then turn the food processor on and churn until the mixture is smooth and pasty. Cut the zucchini lengthwise into thin strips, about 1 mm wide. It's easiest to do this with a mandolin slicer. These will be the noodles. Assemble the lasagna: Spread one-third of the meat sauce over the bottom of a 9 x 13 inch baking dish. Cover it in a single layer of zucchini noodles. Then spread one-third of the cashew cheese over the zucchini noodles. Sprinkle one-third of the ground cauliflower over the cashew cheese. Repeat two more times, creating three complete layers. Bake for 30 min, until the sides are bubbling and the cauliflower on top starts to toast. Cut and serve warm.
Strawberry Lemonade Fudge
Perky Pimento Cheese Recipe

Recipe & photo courtesy of www.aspicyperspective.com
Ingredients:
20 ounces vanilla almond bark 14 ounces sweetened condensed milk • 1 teaspoon lemon extract • 2/3 cup chopped freeze dried strawberries • •
Preparation: Pour the sweetened condensed milk in a large microwave-safe bowl. Roughly chop the almond bark and place it in the bowl. Microwave in 1 minute increments, stirring in between, until the mixture is totally smooth. (About 2 minutes.) Meanwhile line an 8 X 8 inch baking dish with foil. Once the fudge mixture is smooth, stir in the lemon extract and chopped strawberries. Add yellow food coloring if desired. Pour the fudge into the prepared pan and place in the refrigerator for at least one hour. Then flip the hardened fudge out onto a cutting board and peel off the foil. Trim the edges and cut into 49 squares. Keep in an airtight container at room temperature.
Ingredients:
8 ounce cream cheese 3/4 cup mayonnaise • 1 very small clove garlic, minced • 1 T chopped onion • 1 T Worcestershire sauce • 1 T hot sauce • •
8 ounces shredded extra sharp cheddar (2 cups) • 8 ounces shredded pepper jack cheese (2 cups) • 1 /3 cup chopped pimentos, drained • Pepper •
Preparation: Place the cream cheese, garlic and onion in the food processor. Puree until smooth. Then add the mayonnaise, Worcestershire sauce and hot sauce and puree again. Scrape the bowl and add half the shredded cheese. Pulse until well combined. Pour the mixture into a large bowl. Add the remaining cheese, pimentos, and pepper to taste. Mix, cover, and place in the fridge. Allow the pimento cheese spread to chill and thicken for 30 minutes before serving.

Gardening ANNUALS
|
PERENNIALS
Contributed by Marvel Clyde, Owner, Colorscapes Greenhouse and Nursery
PERENNIALS are a delightful addition to the gardens as we look for seasonal color that prompts us to spend the warm days of spring, summer, and fall outdoors. By definition, a perennial is a plant that will winter-over despite temperatures falling to -30 degrees through winter months.
Gardeners are always on the lookout for long bloom times, low-maintenance, deerresistance, blooms that attract beneficials, and foliage that can hold its own as the blooms fade; and despite the challenges of gardening in this area, the undaunted gardener is willing to try new varieties. Fear of failure is not an option in gardening, so do your homework, shop with a list of possibilities gleaned from a trusted source, then put down the smartphone and grab a trowel. It’s unrealistic to expect every plant to thrive, but always feels like it was worth the effort when they do.

APRIL 2017
Herbaceous perennials, like the ones shown above, have foliage that dies back through winter. I move through the gardens in late fall trimming back the foliage so the new growth that emerges in spring won’t have to fight its way through dead, matted foliage that harbors pests. I’m busy working in the greenhouse and nursery through spring, so there’s no time for me to do landscaping chores, but it is a great time to plant shrubs and perennials that will have all summer to set root before cold weather arrives. My advice is: Start with a plan, shop early to get the best selections, even if it means “tending them” until you have a chance to plant
W W W. E V E R Y T H I N G E L K O . C O M
them, don’t jump the gun and try to work soil that is too wet, and take on small, manageable areas one at a time. Once you can work the soil, incorporate organic amendments by lightly tilling or spading them into the top 4-6 inches, plant allowing for mature height and spread, then topdress with mulch. Broadcasting a slowrelease fertilizer will prevent tender new growth susceptible to late frost. Watch for aphids and thrips, but avoid the temptation to spray pesticides that will also kill beneficials which will, given time, thrive in healthy gardens and keep pests in check naturally.
ANNUALS in containers provide stand-out color for areas including the deck and patio where we can enjoy our time “down time” relaxing outdoors through spring, summer, and fall. Every gardener has their favorite colors and varieties to work with and I continue to lean towards annuals with long bloom times, low-maintenance, deerresistance, blooms that attract beneficials, and foliage that can hold its own as the blooms fade. (Sound like familiar traits?)
Colorful Annuals, Perennials, and Shrubs Spring Hours: 8-4 Monday-Saturday
Long gone are the days of marigolds, sweet potato vine, moss rose, zinnias, cosmos, and a host of tender plants that freeze with even the slightest hint of chilly weather. Terra cotta pots that always seem to dry out have lost all appeal, as have “cute” little pots that need watering daily. It’s big and plastic for me and while the initial cost of filling them with quality potting mix is expensive, the plants will thrive and the mix can
Locally owned, 753-5000 www.colorscapesgreenhouse.com
be reused for years to come. I cut back finished annuals in late fall and lift out the roots with a spading fork or trowel in spring. After the finished stems and roots are out I “attack” the container mix that has compacted through winter. After spending months maturing in the ideal environment of a greenhouse, annuals benefit from a week or more acclimating to their new growing conditions. I keep mine on the deck, ready to head out with light cotton sheet should temps fall into the twenties. I use a pot-in-place method for all container gardens: Take the plant out of its pot and set it aside. Mold the potting mix around the empty pot so that only the top rim of the pots can be seen. Apply slow-release fertilizer around the pot rims. Gently remove the pot and set the plant’s root ball in the void created by the empty pot. Apply slight pressure at all four corners and water in immediately. Done! We use this method for every container garden that we grow.

Tulips, hyacinths and daffodils brighten our yards and are often the first color to be seen among the remnants of winter’s snow. Here in the Great Basin Desert we have many native early spring flowers that also come from bulbs.
• Mountain Death Camus
• Solomon's Seal
• Death Camus
• Sego Lily
These bulb producing plants are monocots. Monocots are flowering plants that produce only one cotyledon (the part of the seed that grows into leaves). Most showy monocot flowers with parts in threes belong to the Lily family or one of its allies. Lilies have 3 sepals and 3 petals, which are identical in size and color. There are 6 stamens, but some species lack anthers on some of the stamens. Most lilies produce bulbs and long, grass-like leaves with parallel veins. This group includes some of the most beautiful wildflowers of the sagebrush steppe. Some lily bulbs such as wild onions and sego lilies are edible, while others including Death Camas are deadly poisonous.

Many of these early bloomers can be seen in areas of Spring Creek which have retained their original flora. Others can be found in the Ruby Mountains later in the spring and into summer depending on when the snow finally melts. Next time you are out walking in these areas look down and enjoy these showy native plants. CONTRIBUTED BY ADRIAN BOWLES RENO, NEV
For the first year Reno, Nevada won’t only have the Reno Aces, Greater Nevada Field will serve as a two-sport stadium with the inaugural season of the Reno 1868 Football Club. Reno 1868 FC will be playing in the United Soccer League (USL) whereas the Aces will still remain in the Pacific Coast League going into its 8th season in Reno. The Aces are set to play 72 home games this season while 1868 are scheduled to have 19 more home games all in the span of 247 days with overlapping schedules. In order for both teams to play on Greater Nevada field, the grounds crew within the stadium has to put the field through conversions, transforming the baseball field into a soccer field; much like what the Oakland Raiders and the Oakland Athletics did in the Oakland Coliseum.
When the soccer field is present on the field it lies from the outfield in short left field and goes across the outfield to right center field. The first goal is set just past third base on the left foul line and the other is set against the warning track in right center field with the right side line being parallel and on top of where second and third base line up. In order for the soccer field to be incorporated, Joe Hill, Director of Field Operations, or better known as head groundskeeper, and his crew have to cover the infield with approximately 10,000 square feet of new sod per conversion from local growers Western Turf and Hardscape. Hill’s grounds crew consists of two assistants, two interns, and three to four more men from the sod companies during conversions. Initially, Hill and his crew dig about an inch to an inch and a half of the infield dirt so the new

sod can lie down evenly to the existing grass from the baseball field. Then they cover the infield with the new sod from about half way down the third base line all the way around to in between second and first base. It normally takes seven hours to bring in all of the new sod correctly while it only takes four hours to remove the sod. “And that’s just getting grass in and out. The detail work, you know for us on the infield skin edges is where we spend, after the conversion we probably spend a whole day just fixing the edges, just to make sure that that transition is smooth. Ultimately what we’re trying to do is when you’re in a house and you’re going from a carpeted living room to a hard wood floor or a kitchen where it’s perfectly flat. And ultimately if you step on half of your foot on the infield and half of your foot on the grass, you would never feel the transition. So that is where our attention is really being focused,” said Hill as his perfectionist tendencies make sure he spends efficient time when converting back from a soccer field to a baseball field. Hill is going into his 15th year in the turf management business. Before coming to Reno in August of 2015, Hill spent six years working on seasonal grounds crews across the nation for the Boston Red Sox, the Seattle Mariners, and the New York Mets. He grew up playing baseball and played through his sophomore year of college at Spokane Falls Community College in Washington before transferring to Washington State, where he majored in turf management. At Washington State Hill began working for the Spokane Indians, which is a short season class A ball team for the Texas Rangers. After being an assistant grounds keeper for four years he was granted the job head groundskeeper in 2007, the same year

he graduated college. Following college, Hill went to work on a private golf course where he could learn their cultural practices to improve his skills and tie them back into the baseball world. Hill took this job in Reno knowing that the owners would be implementing a soccer team in the same stadium and jumped at the chance to be part of it. “People think I’m crazy. I’ve been told that I’m nuts, but having a triple-A ballpark, integrating and building a soccer franchise into it, you know, getting the opportunity to be on the ground floor of soccer was something that I thought very few people are going to be able to do. So in a weird way the psychotic schedule and the humongous challenge this place is going to face, adding soccer, is what intrigued me man. I like a tough situation, so it was an obvious yes,” said Hill. Good thing Hill likes tough situations; a week prior to 1868’s first preseason game, the entire field was flooded. The entire warning track and infield looked like a swamp as people’s feet sank into the mud with each step. Reno has been hit with a record breaking 12.74 inches of rainfall since October 1, of 2016 with 7.9 inches coming since January 2017. “This year has been a little crazy with the amount of rain we’ve gotten in January and what we’ve gotten so far in February. I mean it’s great for the drought and it’s really helped our reserve and build the water supply, so I’ll never complain about that because it’s a great thing. I’m a firm believer that momma nature lets us know what she needs and just let it happen. But this year has been challenging with soccer starting next week. You know we’ve had to
change up our management style on the field just to be ready for that,” said Hill. With a week to prepare, Hill placed three heaters about the size of air conditioning units on top of the infield blowing flames directly down on the dirt making the water evaporate. Every hour or so Hill and his crew would slowly move the heaters over forcing all of the water out of the infield. With the help of Hill’s tactics and the weather taking a turn for the better, they were able to convert the baseball field to a soccer field with time to spare as 1868 lost on February 18 in the first game held on Greater Nevada Field in 2017. The fields needs more work on the little details when being converted back into a baseball field. Yes, Hill and his crew have to make sure all of the sod is lined up correctly and the field is safe, but soccer players don’t have to worry about a bad hop coming off the dirt while playing defense. Anything that happens where the field manipulates the baseball or gameplay falls back on to Hill. It is his responsibility the field will not affect the game. “I mean Joe’s been around baseball, he’s a pro and one thing I noticed about the conversions last season, is when he converted it back to a baseball field. Like, for a lot of the baseball guys, nobody really noticed the field went through a conversion like we thought they would. The way the infield played didn’t really change, like it didn’t get faster anywhere. And visiting teams couldn’t really tell the field went through a conversion,” expressed Bubba Hearn, the visiting clubhouse manager within Greater Nevada Field. In the past Hill has been able to successfully convert the field without the opposing team even knowing the field went through
a conversion. That is converting the field with sufficient amount of time, however the conversions this year are going to make things tricky. In May, Hill and his crew have to convert the field on multiple occasions with the windows to do so getting smaller. The Aces are scheduled to play on May 18 at 11:35AM and two days later, May 20; the 1868 are scheduled to play at 7:30PM. That gives Hill and his crew will have about 56 hours to complete the conversion making this the shortest window they’ve had to face so far. They’ll also have to make the conversion again in May from soccer to baseball when 1868 play on May 24, before the Aces play on the 27th. May will be a great test to see how Hill and his crew handle the challenge before their busiest month of the season, July. 1868 are set to play on Greater Nevada Field on June 30 then again four days later on July 3, allowing Hill and his crew time to rest before the tightest deadline of the year. On July 3, 1868 are scheduled to play at 7:30PM, then just 23 hours and five minutes later the Aces play in their biggest game of the year at 6:35PM on July 4. That will be the shortest window of the season. “You know that’s kind of interesting because those are what I call our two post card days where for July 3, we’ll probably have fireworks for the soccer game so we want to look absolutely dialed in for soccer, and obviously July 4 is the biggest game of our year. So having those two nights, our goal ultimately is to have a phenomenal [soccer] field for July 3, and then turn it around and have a phenomenal field for July 4 for baseball,” Hill expressed seeming eager for the challenge.

The soccer match on July 3 is scheduled to start at 7:30PM; with a game time of an hour and a half the game should be over by 9:00PM with fireworks following the game. As soon as the fireworks are over, Hill and his crew will go in to begin taking the grass off of the infield which will lead to them working on the field over night. Management along side Hill have decided to leave the lights on all night long to make sure Hill and his team have the best chance to transform the field in the allotted time. Both management and Hill have also talked to each team that is scheduled to play on the 4th, explaining that they won’t be able to take batting practice on the field giving the grounds crew as much time as they need to prepare. “We’re gonna give ourselves as much time that day as we possibly need to get the field back ready for baseball because my goal is to have a soccer game on the 3rd and if someone came to the 3rd and the 4th, they could show up and never know that the previous event happened. My goal on July 4 is to have people show up to a baseball game and never know there was a soccer game 24 hours before that. It’s going to be very challenging, we’re going to have to be really on top of our game but I’m confident in our people and we’ll get it done,” said Hill. July doesn’t only offer the tightest window to convert the field; it also requires the grounds crew to convert the field again in between July 20 and July 22 turning it from a baseball field back to a soccer field in only 48 hours and 25 minutes. These two conversions make it so Hill and his crew will have to complete the two fastest conversions in the same month. “Absolutely we’ll get it done. Then the same on the other nights when we have those tight windows, it’s going to be odd hours and we might be working really late or here super early,” said Hill as he hinted that he’ll be at the stadium a lot this summer.
During the season when the Aces home, Hill anticipates that he’ll be working close to 100 hours a week spending 15-18 hours on the field a day. When the Aces aren’t home he hopes his “off” weeks will be around 60 hours a week. With the addition of soccer this year it almost guarantees that Hill will be in the stadium around 60 hours a week. Guess that’s what it takes when you’re facing a challenge to this caliber. Hill rests a lot of the corporation on his back just as the head groundskeeper. If a conversion isn’t completed on time the company is going to lose a lot of fans. The corporation puts a lot of their trust in Hill to make sure he can get the field prepared for each game regardless of the weather or the conversions. According to Winter Moreno, the community relations and special events coordinator within Greater Nevada Field, groundskeepers hold a lot of weight in the company. “I mean we couldn’t have any events or we couldn’t have any games without him. I know that we sell tickets and we bring collateral and we bring people to the field, but 50% of that is making sure that they have a field to play on. 100% of it is actually making sure we have a field to play on but 50% of all the work that is put into our game days and everything is all Joe. Because without that field we’re nothing. But we also wouldn’t have anything without the fans either or without events and everything. But a huge portion, he does 50% solely by himself and his crew and the rest of us fill in the other 50%,” said Moreno. Reno 1868 FC play their regular season home opener on March 23, at 7:00PM and the Reno Aces face the Nevada Wolf Pack on April 4, at 6:05PM.

TIPS FOR PLANNING YOUR
next vacation Contributed by Sue Bradford of Journeys Around the World
With Spring Break coming up fast and the summer travel months just around the corner, I thought it would be nice to give you some travel trips to help make your 2017 vacation the best one ever.
1
50
DECIDE WHEN YOU WANT TO GO ON VACATION: Choosing the time of year for your vacation is an important first step. It can determine what types of activities you can plan, how busy certain places will be and how much money you will need to spend. Some areas have better weather during certain times of the year. And don’t forget about hurricane season from June-November if you are considering a cruise or beach resort vacation to an area that can be affected by these.
APRIL 2017
W W W. E V E R Y T H I N G E L K O . C O M
2
SET YOURSELF A BUDGET: We have all seen advertisements for wonderful places located around the globe. I know I want to go see them all, but ask yourself this important question, can I afford to go there? There are lots of expenses associated with a vacation that many travelers don’t think about. The cost of added excursions, transfers to and from the airport, travel insurance, and don’t forget taxes, port fees and a bar bill if you decide to go on a cruise. Don’t forget all the souvenirs you need to bring home for everyone. The list goes on and on.
3 4
WHAT ROOM TYPE ARE YOU THINKING ABOUT FOR THAT BEACH VACATION OR CRUISE: With resorts and cruises it’s all about location, location, location. How important is an ocean view to you? Did you want a balcony stateroom while on your cruise? The room type and location can greatly affect the cost of your trip. Just moving your trip to a resort off the beach is one example of a way to save money on your vacation budget. WHAT TYPE OF TRAVEL EXPERIENCE ARE YOU LOOKING FOR? Is this your dream honeymoon and you want a romantic and relaxing trip? Or are you traveling with a group of friends for a birthday and you want something really upbeat and fun? Are there going to be children on this vacation? Different vacation destinations have different vibes and offer different experiences. Make sure you choose right one for you and everyone else in your travel group so no one is disappointed in the trip.
5 6
KEEP CHECKING THOSE AIRLINE RATES. The fares for flying can change not only daily, but hourly. Yes, that’s right I said hourly. What you see now, may not be the fare down the line. Check for flights out of different airports. Maybe it is worth that 4-hour drive to the next closest airport to save hundreds of dollars on your vacation (Like we have a choice, right?). Just don’t forget about the airport parking fees, hotel & meal costs towards your final budget. CALL YOUR LOCAL TRAVEL AGENT and let them do all of the above for you and more: Set up an appointment and meet them. Here you can ask questions about their services and what they can do for you. They can offer you their professional advice about your plans and possibly give you firsthand experience on where you want to go. A real live person to help you every step of the way, from reservation to travel and return home. Deal with a local business person, someone who really cares, not a .com company who takes your money and offers no support if there is a problem down the line.

At Northeastern Nevada Radiation Oncology Center, we believe that patients should focus their energy on healing. That’s why we do everything we can to reduce their financial burden. Our patients only pay the in-network price, even if we are not participating in their insurance network. In fact, since we opened our center in June 2015, on average our patients have only paid $266 out of pocket for an entire course of radiation treatment. We are committed to helping patients navigate the financial aspects of care – because money should never be a barrier to receiving exceptional cancer treatment.

DermaSound™
ELITE
Contributed by Skinessence
The DermaSound™ Elite is an ultrasonic clinical skin treatment system that uses low frequency sound waves to perform aesthetic services in a unique and highly effective way, the DermaSound Elite system provides superior exfoliation that intensifies and enhances the peeling action of chemical solutions. DermaSound Elite is easy to set up and easy to use in combination with other treatments or as a stand-alone clinical skin care therapy. This non-invasive, portable and cost-effective device improves all skin conditions including wrinkles, acne, rosacea and pigmentation through cavitation, sonophoresis and microcurrent, resulting in increased client satisfaction and profitability. Before/After
Cavitation
Cavitation is a process to remove the micro-damaged layer and dead skin cells using a gentle ‘micro-jet’ frequency with kinetic force that spins water molecules across the skin surface in vibrations of 28,000 times per second without trauma or inflammation. Using color blind technology, Cavitation is safe to use on all skin of color for excellent results in acne, pigmentation and aging skin.
Sonophoresis
Sonophoresis is a bio-molecular penetration of skin care nutrients and other topical to the skin cells that can only be achieved if the correct frequency and power densities are synchronized. The DermaSound Elite frequency has been proven to enhance topical penetration by combining the established science of electrical signal, input of electrical current in watts and electromagnetic coupling factor and efficiency.
Before/After
Microcurrent
Research has found that a central factor in aging skin is the decay of the mitochondria, the biological engine that converts carbohydrates, fats and proteins into energy. Microcurrent provides the skin care professional the ability to rebalance and repair cells for younger acting skin by assisting in the transport of nutrients, eliminating waste from the cells, AND influencing mitochondria to increase ATP energy. Results can be seen instantly.
Environmentally Safe
DermaSound Elite is a clean, environmentallysafe device that utilizes water and low frequency sound waves instead of batteries, crystals, needles and other disposable waste particles which are typically used in other devices and can pollute the environment.

Contributed by RE/MAX Gold Fresh paint on the walls, professional staging and an asking price that ends in 999 — when you’re selling your home, you’ll do whatever you can to help it stand out and sell faster. Because the National Association of Realtors is predicting modest growth for the 2017 real estate market, as a seller you want every edge you can get. And on the heels of the popular Consumer Electronics Show in January, perhaps that edge is a smarter home. Here are six trending smart home features that might catch buyers’ attention and help sell your home faster:
KEYLESS ENTRY DOOR LOCKS Have you ever left the house and worried that you left the front door unlocked? If your home is equipped with a keyless/remote entry door lock — available from multiple manufacturers — you can use an app on your smartphone to lock the door from wherever you are. Some manufacturers make versions that will also send a text or email to your phone when the door opens. Locks that can be programmed with multiple entry codes also allow you to see who comes and goes and when. SMART LIGHTING From lighting automation that allows you to control lights remotely and wirelessly, to energyefficient LED bulbs that can change color to match your mood and decor, lighting has come a long way. Some smart lights work in tandem with home automation systems to allow you to turn them on or off, or even dim them, from an app on a smartphone or tablet. Others require no communication hub and can be controlled directly from your mobile device. You can also put some smart bulbs on timers (using your wireless device), sync them with certain TV shows or movies, and integrate them with security cameras and thermostats. DIY SECURITY SYSTEMS Don’t want to sign a contract or deal with complex security systems? Install-it-yourself security systems are affordable and offer security features like cameras, sensors, motion detectors and alarms or sirens, without the need for a security service to monitor them.
SMART APPLIANCES The Internet of Things (IoT) — everyday objects that have network connectivity — includes a growing list of smart appliances. Many manufacturers are offering washers, dryers, refrigerators and other home appliances that can communicate with you — and each other — wirelessly. Many can be controlled remotely from your smartphone — so if you leave the house and can’t remember if you turned off the stove, you can check in and turn it off using your smartphone app. While appliances aren’t always included in a home sale, they do make for interesting features that keep your home top of mind to buyers. SMART PLUGS One of the easiest, most affordable smart home upgrades you can make is to add smart plugs to your home. These Wi-Fi-enabled plugs fit existing outlets and can be controlled from a smartphone app. Plug anything into a smart plug, like lights or a television, and you can turn it on or off remotely, track energy consumption, or even create an onoff schedule.

EASY, AFFORDABLE SMART HOME FEATURES
TEMPERATURE CONTROLS Programmable thermostats were just the beginning; today’s home temperature controls are even smarter. Like other smart home features, smart thermostats can be controlled remotely from your mobile device. You can program them to make automatic temperature adjustments and then use your smartphone to override the program like turning up the heat on a particularly cold day. Some smart thermostats learn from household behavior and adjust the temperature to meet your family’s needs and save energy, while others adjust based on the number of people in a room. And several can now be operated via voicecontrolled virtual assistants.

Principles
behind the ideal protein weight loss method The body has three sources of energy from which it draws to meet its metabolic needs. Carbohydrates, Muscle, and fat. Chronologically, the body will first draw on its carbohydrate reserve before turning to muscle and fat. During the weight loss phases of the protocol, we limit carbohydrate intake to encourge the body to turn to its fat and muscle components for energy. By eating high biological protein foods, the protocol helps to support muscle mass and teaches dieters how to develop smarter eating habits and lifestylke choices so they can maintain a stable weight after weight loss is achieved.

Good Posture, Better Mood?
of the past.
Contributed by Dr. Todd Wendell
While grandma may have nagged you about your posture, she may not have realized the other benefits of sitting or standing up straight with your head up and shoulders back. Mood. That’s right. Various studies reveal that maintaining good posture can also help boost your mood and slash stress.
of Ruby Mountain Chiropractic Center
• A Simple Yet Effective Action According to research from San Francisco State University Professor of Health Education Erik Peper, Ph.D., individuals who walk with a slumped, or downcast posture can have feelings of depression or diminished energy. Other studies have even correlated negative impacts on oxygen, hormone production and other vital organ functions. This research also revealed, however, that those feelings of depression can be reversed simply by walking in a more upright manner. Imagine being able to boost your mood and even your energy level with this easy action. Standing in an expansive posture of confidence, even if you don’t feel particularly confident, can impact testosterone and cortisol levels in the brain. Adopting such “power poses” may even affect one’s chances for success. If you’re having a bout of the blues, take a quick assessment of how you’re sitting and standing. Adopting better posture just may improve your mood, boost your confidence and give you more energy to take on your everyday tasks and more. • The Mental and Physical Benefits of Chiropractic Need help improving your posture so you can feel your best, mentally and physically? PROPANE SAFETY AND
THUNDERSTORMS C ONTR IBUTE D BY J U L I E A . K RA U S, WEST ERN STAT ES P RO PA N E
Thunderstorms can pose a serious threat to people and property in all parts of the country. In the U.S., over 100,000 thunderstorms occur each year. These storms, which can be accompanied by high winds, hail, and tornados, can cause power outages, fires, and flooding.
10
Things You Can Do to Keep Your Family Safe
If your home uses propane, there are a few simple steps you can take to keep your family safe and avoid potential dangers.
1
Create an emergency preparedness plan and review it with everyone in your family. Post a list with contact information for your propane retailer and emergency services (fire department, etc.) along with instructions for turning off propane, electricity, and water. If you do need to turn off your propane, contact a service technician to inspect your propane system prior to turning it back on.
2
Consider installing UL-listed propane gas detectors and carbon monoxide detectors. These detectors provide you with an additional measure of security. Be sure to follow the manufacturer’s instructions regarding installation, location, and maintenance.
3
If you are outside and can hear thunder, you are close enough to the storm to be struck by lightning. Go to safe shelter immediately. Metal objects such as propane tanks and equipment, tractors, and telephone lines can conduct electricity. Do not go near them. If you are caught outside, find a low-lying, open place away from trees and poles. Make sure the place you choose is not subject to flooding.
4
In the event that a flood threatens your safety, you should shut off the gas. Turn off the main gas supply valve on your propane tank, if it is safe to do so. To close the valve, turn it clockwise. Also, it's a good idea to turn off the gas supply valves located near individual indoor appliances. You may have to evacuate your property or move to a higher level within your home.
5
If a tornado is approaching, immediately take action. If you are inside your home or a building, go to the lowest level possible such as a basement or a storm cellar. If there is no basement, go to the center of an interior room on the lowest level. If you are in a mobile home, trailer, or vehicle, get out immediately and seek shelter in a sturdy building or storm shelter.
6
After the storm passes and it is safe to do so, check the entire area for downed power lines, damaged gas lines, or damage to your propane tank. High winds and hail can move, shift, or damage gas lines and tanks. If it is dark, use flashlights, not candles. Immediately call your local utility company or propane retailer if any of these hazards exist. Do not attempt repairs yourself. W W W. E V E R Y T H I N G E L K O . C O M

7
Never use outdoor propane appliances indoors or in enclosed areas, particularly during a power outage. This can result in carbon monoxide poisoning or death. These include such appliances as outdoor portable heaters, barbecue grills, and portable generators. Only use appliances indoors that are designed and approved for indoor use. It's also important that you never store, place, or use a propane cylinder indoors or in enclosed areas.
9
Schedule a time for a qualified service technician to perform a complete inspection of your propane system. If you suspect any of your propane appliances, equipment, or vehicles have been under water or damaged, or you have turned off your gas supply. Never use or operate appliances, equipment, or vehicles, or turn on the gas supply, until your system has been inspected by a qualified service technician. Do not attempt repairs yourself.
8
Inspect your propane appliances for water or other damage, if it is safe to do so. If the appliances have electric components and have been exposed to water, they can create a fire hazard. Do not ever turn on a light switch, use any power source, or inspect your household appliances while standing in water. This can result in electrocution.
10
Exercise sound judgment. As with any challenging situation, your composure during power outages and other severe weather events will ensure you don’t take unnecessary risks or pose any additional dangers to your family and home. Stay calm; use radios, television, and telephones to stay informed and connected. If any questions arise, contact your propane retailer or local fire department.

Mark your calendars
Just Desserts Saturday, May 6, 2017 from 5:30-8:00pm
Are you tired of the cold weather and getting cabin fever? Do you want to start the spring time with a great event? If you answered “yes” to any of these questions then this is the event for you! Join us for the 29th Annual Just Desserts fundraiser hosted by The Friends of the Elko County Library! This is the 29th year that the Friends have held the annual fundraiser, and we are confident you will have a great time. Tickets for the event are $15.00 and can be purchased at the Elko County Library prior to the event or at the door the night of the event. Your ticket will give you access to desserts that include cakes, cookies, truffles, a chocolate dipping station, fruits, cheese and crackers, and much more! You will also be able to taste an assortment of wines, beers, specialty coffees and margaritas! Where else could you have such a luscious evening for $15.00? Individuals and businesses have donated their time, money, and talent to provide an amazing evening where you can indulge in food and drink that will overpower your senses. Local businesses and individuals annually donate items for the silent auction. Gift baskets, wine, balloon rides, blankets, pictures, tools, outdoor gear, and jewelry are among some of the many items that the Friends have auctioned off in past years. Items donated will be available for viewing the beginning of April and on “The Friends of the Library” Facebook page. As usual, there is a wide variety of items to please everyone! The silent auction opens at 5:30 and will close at 7:30 the night of the event. This year’s lineup for entertainment includes the local band Southwind. Southwind’s trio has been playing together for about 20 years and have entertained Just Desserts attendees for a number of years. Southwind features a variety of music: Celtic, American, Folk and more. They have recently recorded their second CD,

“Wanted, More Time” following their debut album “It’s About Time”! By purchasing a ticket to “Just Desserts” you will be entered into the door prize drawing. This year, first place is $1,000 and second is $500. Those that can’t attend but wish to support the library by purchasing a ticket, only need to return the stub to the library prior to the event and their ticket will be entered into the drawing. The Friends of the Elko County Library is a volunteer group that was formed in 1990. The Friends meet every third Tuesday at noon at the Elko County Library. The Friends have raised and donated over $230,000 to the library since its inception. These funds have been used to purchase books for adults and children, magazines, reference materials, audio books, downloadable materials, and furniture such as shelving. Funds have also been used to purchase public computers, assisted in the purchasing of the bookmobile and the operational costs of the bookmobile, adult and children’s programming as well as other library needs. The Friends of the Elko County Library have a scholarship that is awarded each year in memorial of Julia Doren who was a member of the Friends Group. If you are interested in joining the Friends of the Elko County Library, membership is only $15 for three years. There are many benefits in being a member. You get to attend preview day of Book Sales; 2 discount tickets for Just Deserts; “Fine Forgiveness” coupon worth $10; and 1 coupon for 1 free book from a Friends Book Sale. All community members are welcomed to join. You can sign up anytime at the Library. “Without the Friends of the Elko County Library, the library would not be able to provide all the services available to the community. The library is extremely thankful for the support it receives from the Friends”.

Head Start of Northeastern Nevada
CONTRIBUTED BY SHABONYA DUT TON OF STATE FARM, WRIT TEN BY KELSIE CREAMER
"Head Start was there before I even knew I needed them." This powerful statement comes from Randy Mauldin who is the Chairperson of the Board of Directors for Head Start of Northeastern Nevada in Elko. He is a Chiropractor and owner of Canyon Chiropractic in Spring Creek, Nevada. The foundation for his skill set and success was laid years ago when Head Start was still housed in the Basque house. Stories like his can be seen throughout our community because this organization is giving children and families the structure and foundation they need to be able to not only subsist but thrive. Head Start of Northeastern Nevada is one of thousands of Grantees throughout the Nation. The local organization has been in existence in the Elko area for over fifty years. The organization has been in multiple locations in that time frame ranging from the Basque house to current locations on Silver St. and Golf Course Rd. in Elko. They currently serve one hundred and sixty-five children and families and employ fifty people in our area, through all of the programs that they offer. These programs include

early childhood education, preschool, home visiting programs, parent services, nutritional programs, and mental health programs. They serve the highest risk families in our community. Families that are or could be homeless, low income, and are in the lowest socio-economic status. It is Head Start’s goal to make sure that their parents are enhancing themselves and that their students are educationally ready. That is multi-faceted. It means that the students are nutritionally sound, they are mentally capable, and they are exposed to routines, math, science, literacy. It means that parents have the ability to seek gainful employment and/or achieve their educational goals. The program is federally reviewed in these areas and has been found to be one of the top programs in our region. A testament to their skill and their culture of excellence can be found in a quote from Rhonda LaFountaine. She is a Professional Early Childhood Education Mentor and Instructor at Truckee Meadows Community College she stated, “I have

had the honor of observing all of HSNN’s Infant, Toddler, and Preschool classrooms during the past 4 years, and I am continually blown away by the dedication of the staff and the level of caring expressed by the teachers. One thing I love about Head Start is that every child is included in the program. While income limits apply, no child is turned away because of behaviors or any other issues. I have seen Head Start teachers support children with significant special needs. The teachers dedicate themselves to integrating and expanding the skills of every child no matter what their challenges may be. This is often incredibly challenging and the level of dedication needed to accomplish successful integration is immense. I think the staff at HSNN is amazing. I also appreciate the teamwork and collaboration of the staff. The quote, “It takes a village to raise a child” is very true in this organization. The teachers support one another. The staff from the director, to the managers, to the teachers, to the kitchen, office and custodial staff all support the goal of “raising children” and helping them to grow to be the best they can be. Head Start is true to its name, as the children truly graduate from the program with a head start in life and in school.” Parents know that the thought and care put into every lesson plan will assure that their

child will reach the goals that are set for tiny learners. These goals are evaluated quarterly and data is collected around classroom management, emotional support, and instructional support. The high standards that Head Start of Northeastern Nevada has placed for themselves has led to a great all around school, as vocalized by parents Karen Hoem & Patricia Udy, “Head Start is truly a great SCHOOL. Many forget the importance of school even for those at a young toddler age. When Kaysen enrolled in Early Head Start, he was behind in EVERY category. He has been there for a year and a half and has completely caught up! Kaysen is learning every single day. He enjoys the socialization of school, he is learning life skills that he will need as he continues to grow and get older. Things, like the importance of washing hands, taking care of the dishes, working with others and practicing good etiquette. He is also learning how to count, his colors, numbers and other content that will prepare him for his future schooling. Kaysen loves his teachers. They are structured, caring and want what’s best for him.” These same convictions are carried through the emotions of single dad Douglas Allen Braithwaite, “...I would like to say how much I enjoy my child going to Head Start. I have never had an issue that couldn’t be resolved the day it happened. The teachers and staff are extremely empathetic to my situation being a single dad and work very well with my work schedule. I am beyond words with how well they treat my son. I love coming home and hearing how my child had such a wonderful day at school and actually can’t wait to go back! Head Start is an amazing school and I always will recommend them to anyone and everyone that wants to give their child a ‘headstart’ on life and learning’”. Head Start of Northeastern Nevada was fortunate enough to be one of the few grantees Nationally to receive a Duration Grant award that included funds for construction of a new preschool facility which will provide full day opportunities for three classrooms. The location will be at 1326 Silver St and will include a playground, and six new full time employees. In order for this dream to become a reality HSNN needs the communities help. Executive Director Brenna Malone has been working to raise a onetime $183,000 non-federal share match for the Duration Grant. The match is a requirement of the Federal Government. Receipt of a 25% match ensures that Head Start grantees are housed in communities that support their valuable efforts. Barrick Nevada has generously pledged a $25,000 dollar conditional payment if Head Start can raise the remaining $158,000 from additional community support. Head Start is a very fiscally responsibly organization that works within the confines of their operating budget and receives most of their donations through the volunteer time of enrolled parents, the Special Education Department of the Elko County School District and other community members. Head Start is also the proud recipient of Newmont’s Legacy Funds. Every donation is greatly appreciated and can be forwarded to Head Start of Northeastern Nevada Attn: Brenna Malone Exec Director. 1280 Golf Course Rd Elko NV, 89801 Construction Project. Please feel free to contact Brenna Malone at HSNN with any questions on how you can become a part of this great organization. You can reach her at brenna@hsnn.net. Thank you Head Start of Northeastern Nevada for being a Good Neighbor and teaching our young people how to be Good Neighbors in the future. I hope we as a community can pull together to help you reach your goal to continue for years to come. If you would like to nominate someone you think should be a Good Neighbor in the future please email kayla.ozman.waav@statefarm.com, or come to 1794 Idaho St and drop off a nomination.

Canine Heartworm Disease April is such a fantastic month… A few weeks of warm (ish) weather coming, flowers and trees coming alive, baby animals popping into the world, and most amazingly, “Heartworm Awareness Month” nationwide! This is a big topic that is a big deal in a big way, mainly because it is life threatening disease for man’s best friend. This month’s article from Elko Veterinary Clinic will delve into information on this disease, as well as prevention tips and protocols, that we can help get your furry family started on. So let’s jump into this…

Heartworms need only 3 things in life to live.. mosquitos, blood, and animals. The nasty cycle starts by a mosquito biting an animal infected with heartworms. Those heartworm eggs then develop into larvae in the mosquito, who then transmits these larvae to a healthy animal where they take 6 to 9 months to grow into worms in the heart. As you can imagine, worms in a heart are not conducive to life, making these sneaky little parasites under the surface fatal if not prevented, and especially fatal if not treated. Mosquitos being the vectors, do have a higher preference towards dogs than cats, making cats only 5-20% of the same infection rate of canines.
Fortunately for us, this can all be preventable! According to the American Heartworm Society, we are definitely not such a hot zone as the deep south or humid Midwest, BUT we have 1-5 canine cases per clinic on average reported in Elko county every year, and those numbers keep coming up every year still. Prevention at an early age is key, as is continual effort to make prevention a part of your monthly routine. Dogs less than 6 months of age can start prevention immediately, with a once a month chewable called “Heartguard” dosed according to your dog’s body weight. Patients over 6 months of age need a heartworm test ran prior to starting Heartguard, which is a very simple in house blood test that takes only 8 minutes to run, and can be a simple appointment at the clinic. Monthly dosages can be prescribed in 6 month increments according to the pets
weight, and this very palatable, once monthly jerky treat for your pet is a great way to go! The great part about this product is that it also protects your pet monthly from roundworms and hookworms. While “Heartguard” is not a replacement for your pet’s regular broad spectrum dewormer, it is definitely an added bonus, especially for our active outdoor dogs. According to suggestions from the American Heartworm Society, your pet will still get tested for heartworms yearly, even while on the medication, to ensure that the worms are not building resistance to the medication and that your pet is appropriately absorbing the dose. While starting your pet on “Heartguard” prior to summer, also consider starting Nexguard, another once month chewable for the prevention of fleas and ticks, killing them when they bite and preventing them from latching onto the host long-term. This is a super product for our outdoor hunting and camping dogs especially, being more in continual contact with these specific arthropods. With any questions on these products, please feel free to contact our clinic to schedule an appointment or consultation, or visit our website elkovet.com , or our facebook page for more information. Again as always, we’re here to help ensure your pets are healthy and happy coming into the summer season, and starting a monthly preventative is a huge part of your pets monthly healthcare routine. Welcome to spring, folks!
