National Basque Festival - Elko, NV Friday, June 30 - Sunday, July 2 This tradition began with a celebration that brought sheepherders and cattle ranchers into town for a day of celebration. The festival became a two-day event in 1964, now known as the National Basque Festival. The weekend festivities were scheduled around the 4th of July weekend, to celebrate with this great country and to thank them for accepting Basques and their heritage so freely. Traditions are an important part of the Basque heritage and the Elko Euzkaldunak Club is very proud of the National Basque Festival, an honor bestowed upon us by Governor Sawyer in 1964 in conjunction with the State of Nevada Bicentennial celebration. It is a tradition that we have upheld for 50 years and hope to carry it on for many more years to come. For information and/or a detailed list of event during the 2017 National Basque Festival visit www.elkobasqueclub.com.

Pintxos: Gourmet Basque Finger Foods

Walk into just about any bar in the Basque Country and you’ll find the bar top lined with plates full of colorful, and many times, elegant finger foods. These culinary treats are called pintxos (peen-chos) and are akin to Spanish tapas. The term pintxo comes from the Spanish word pinchar, meaning to skewer or to spike. Traditionally, pintxos have a toothpick holding meat, seafood, cheese or vegetables to a piece of bread. The toothpicks are used to keep track of the number of pintxos a customer has eaten. In the Basque Country and throughout Spain, dinner is served later than in the United States – typically between 8 and 11 pm. Pintxos are eaten as an appetizer after the end of the work day and before heading home for dinner. One or two pintxos are consumed along with a small glass of 20

wine – txikito – or beer – zurito in a bar before moving on to the next bar to repeat the process. This custom of a Basque bar crawl is known as the txikiteo. The txikiteo, and eating pintxos for that matter, is more of an excuse to get together and chat with friends as it is about curbing the appetite. From simple pintxos with chorizo and cheese, or tortilla de patata, to extravagant works of culinary art prepared with fois gras or caviar, the possibilities of pintxo creations are endless. In fact, like just about everything else Basque, there are pintxo competitions and prizes are awarded to the best pintxo bars. This passion has led to ongoing innovation into the recipes of these gastronomic treasures.

Tortilla de Patata (Potato Omelet) Pintxo Recipe INGREDIENTS: • 3 pounds baking potatoes (6-8), peeled, cut into 1/4" slices • 3 teaspoons kosher salt • 2 cups olive oil • 1 medium onion, chopped • 10 large eggs, beaten to blend • 1 French baguette, cut diagonally into 1” thick slices • 1 jar of Piquillo peppers, ½” slices PREPARATION: 1. Place potatoes in a large colander, sprinkle with 2 teaspoons salt, and toss to coat. Let stand for 30 minutes. Pat dry with paper towels. 2. Heat oil in a large nonstick skillet over medium-high heat. Add potatoes and cook, turning occasionally, until crisp-tender, 10-15 minutes. 3. Add onion to potatoes in skillet; cook until onion and potatoes are soft, 5-8 minutes. Using a slotted spoon, transfer mixture to a large bowl; let cool slightly. Strain oil into a heatproof bowl; set aside. 4. Add eggs to potato mixture; season with remaining salt. Wipe out skillet. Heat 1/4 cup reserved oil over medium-high heat (chill remaining oil for another use). Add egg mixture, arranging potatoes to submerge. 5. Reduce heat to medium; cook tortilla until almost set (it will be slightly runny on top), 25-30 minutes. Invert onto a large plate. Slide into skillet browned side up. Cook until golden on bottom and cooked through, about 4 minutes more. Serve warm or at room temperature. Cut into wedges. 6. To make into a pintxo, place a wedge of the tortilla onto a slice of French baguette. Garnish with a slice of piquillo pepper and place a toothpick through all ingredients. Bloomin' Vegetable Tart

Geode Cookies

Recipe & photo courtesy of www.delish.com

Recipe & photo courtesy of www.delish.com

Ingredients:

1 tube refrigerated crescent rolls • 8 oz. cream cheese, softened • 1/2 c. freshly grated Parmesan • 1 tsp. lemon juice • 1 tsp. chopped fresh thyme • 1 tbsp. chopped fresh parsley •

kosher salt • Freshly ground black pepper • 1 large zucchini • 1 large yellow squash • 1 large carrot, peeled • 1 tbsp. extra-virgin olive oil •

Ingredients:

1 tube refrigerated sugar cookie dough • 1 c. powdered sugar • 2-4 tbsp. milk • white sanding sugar •

Pink, blue and green sanding sugars •P ink, blue and green rock candy, smashed •

Preparation: Preparation: Preheat oven to 350°. Unroll crescent dough and separate into triangles. Arrange triangles in an 8" pie pan in a circular pattern around the pan, with the narrow pointing toward the center. Pinch the edges together slightly. Bake until slightly golden, about 10 minutes, then let cool slightly.

Meanwhile, in a large bowl, combine cream cheese, Parmesan, lemon juice, thyme and parsley. Season with salt and pepper and beat until mixture is very smooth.

Cut the zucchini, yellow squash and carrot in half lengthwise. Lay each vegetable on a cutting board, cut-side down, and thinly slice each vegetable lengthwise into long thick strips, about 1/8”. (You should be able to bend them!) You may need to peel carrots into long thick strips, as cutting them thinly can be difficult.

Spread cream cheese mixture on baked crescent crust. Roll one of the vegetable strips into a tight coil and place it in the center of the tart. Arrange vegetable slices in tight concentric circles around the middle, alternating colors, until the tart is filled. Drizzle the top with olive oil and season with salt and pepper. Bake until the vegetables are tender and the crust is a deep golden, 35 to 40 minutes. Serve warm or at room temperature.

Preheat oven to 350° and line two large baking sheets with parchment paper. Roll small 1” balls out of sugar cookie dough and place them about 1 1/2” apart on the prepared baking sheets. Using your hands, press down on the cookie dough balls to make them look a bit misshapen. Bake for 12 minutes. Let cool completely before decorating. Make the icing: In a small bowl, whisk together powdered sugar and 2 T milk. If the icing is too thick, gradually add a bit more milk. Roll the edges of the cooled cookies in icing, then roll the edges in colorful sanding sugar, alternating colors. Let set until the icing has hardened (15 min). Working one cookie at a time, spoon more icing onto the center of each cookie. Drop a tiny bit of food coloring onto the icing then use a toothpick to swirl the food coloring to create an agate look. Sprinkle with white sanding sugar and more colorful sanding sugar, then decorate the cookie with rock candies. Let set completely before serving.

There are seven Xeriscape principles that make a low-maintenance, waterwise Northern Nevada landscape both attractive and attainable:

Grow LEARNING AS WE

• Thoughtful planning for beauty and water conservation • I mproving/Amending the soil if needed • Limiting turf areas •E fficient irrigation; no more "set it, forget it" • Mulching with organic products •S elect appropriate plants and group according to water needs •M aintenance; proper weeding, pruning, and fertilizing.

Contributed by Marvel Clyde, Owner, Colorscapes Greenhouse and Nursery

People I come into contact with through the growing season range in gardening experience from those that have enjoyed gardening for decades to those who are just getting started and have lots of questions. This article is intended to share some ideas so, let’s get started with the basics. #1. Start with a plan. It can be professionally drawn up or sketched on a napkin to designate intended use areas and include: Hardscapes; deck/patios, sheds, driveway and parking areas. Utilitarian needs; garbage bins, firewood storage, a dog run, children’s play area, and sidewalks/pathways to navigate from the front of the house to the backyard. And of course, gardens. Once you have those designated garden areas… #2. Install durable garden edging to define where the garden begins and ends. I have yet to find an edging material that will keep the lawn out of my gardens, but the distance of separation does make a difference. Railroad ties, concrete curbing, and garden walls are prevalent throughout my landscape and at the very least, define the garden borders. Planting area designs are often 1/3 in depth for the given length; Ex: 30’ long x 10’ deep.

34

#3. Improve the soil. Most of the growing action for shrubs and perennials goes on within the top 6-8 inches of the garden space so that’s the depth to concentrate on adding organic amendments that will improve the soil’s ability to hold and release needed water and nutrients. Composted manures, wood mulch, and peat moss lightly tilled in prior to planting will make the planting easier and increase the plant’s chances of developing a strong root system that will overcome challenges faced through our hot, dry summers. #4. Figure out how you intend to irrigate the area prior to planting. Drip irrigation delivers water directly to the roots and is the most efficient. We have miles of soaker hoses and diligently check for nicks that need to be mended. The lawn and several gardens, after years of dragging hoses, are now on a programmable system and we use half the water we did without it. The water and time savings alone is enough to justify the expense. #5. Always consider the plant’s mature HT/height and SP/spread to fill the intended garden space using simple geometry to determine the number of plants needed to create a full looking garden without wasting time and money

overplanting or being disappointed with a garden that looks skimpy. Annuals are great fillers while you tough out that first season waiting for the shrubs and perennials to fill out/mature.

Locally owned, 753-5000 www.colorscapesgreenhouse.com

#6. Educate yourself. Landscaping and gardening books, websites, and magazines help. Here are a few books we can recommend: Taylor's Master Guide to Landscaping by Rita Buchanan. This is a great book. The pictures and text are so well done with easy and practical advice on adding new gardens and hardscapes along with "makeovers" for problem solving. Backyard Design, Making the Most of the Space Around Your House by Jean Spiro Breskend. I leave this book outside through the summer and look at it whenever I have a chance to sit and relax under the gazebo. The pictures give me ideas on how to balance time, energy, space, and design in my own backyard. Orchids OF THE

Ruby Mountains

Striped Coralroot

• Contributed by Lois Ports for the Bristlecone Audubon Chapter • • Photos by Lois Ports and Kristen Frantzen Orr •

Unlike the showy orchids seen for purchase in our local stores, our native orchids have very diminutive flowers and are easily overlooked. Even as small as they are the flowers have the distinctive shape of an orchid blossom. The flower is highly specialized for insect pollination especially by mosquitoes and moths. Coralroots are not green because they have no chlorophyll. These plants are saprophytes, which means they get their food directly from dead organic matter. Coralroots have rhizomes (underground stems, not roots) that form a symbiotic (cooperative) association with fungi in the litter on the forest floor. They cannot survive in habitats without the fungi and they are rarely cultivated or transplanted successfully. They can be found in moist, shady areas typically in the understory of aspen forests. Both spotted and striped coralroots can be found along the Nature Trail in Lamoille Canyon. Their flowers are ½” to ¾” long, tri-lobed with purplish spotting or stripes. The thin stalks have no leaves and can be between 8” and 20”, each having 10 to 30 flowers.

leaves. One innocuous plant is the Slender Bog orchid which has an erect spike of green flowers. It can also be found along the Nature Trail. White Northern Bog Orchid is very common along streamsides and in boggy meadows from the aspen zone and up into subalpine the zone. It grows 10 to 30 inches in height with white ¼ to ½ inch flowers. It has up to 6 leaves that are 3 to 6 inches long. The tubers of this plant were historically used as food. A less common white orchid is the Hooded Ladies’-Tresses. The name comes from the spiraling spike of up to 40 flowers that was thought to resemble a neat braid of hair. It is pollinated by various bees. It can be found in the higher elevations from the sub-alpine and alpine zones.

Yankee Baseball Means Exciting Baseball Contributed by Adrian Bowles, Reno The New York Yankees are back! Finally they’re exciting to watch and they’re competing in their division again. It seems like since 2009 the Yanks haven’t been able to get the ball rolling, always just picking up veterans in hopes of making playoffs from year to year with acquisitions like Brian Roberts and Chris Young. As of May 10, the Yankees have a 21-10 record, which is a better start than they’ve had in any of their World Series years. Now with the help of some homegrown players and some veterans, the Yankees look like the team to beat in the Major League, with one of the most explosive offenses in the

League. The Yankees as a team have hit 52 home runs in just 31 games only trailing the Milwaukee Brewers (55) and the Washington Nationals (53) in that category. The Washington Nationals are currently first in the National League (NL) East division where it looks like the Nationals may run away with the title already being five and a half games up in the division. The Yankees are currently tied the American League (AL) East with the Baltimore Orioles. The Yankees are second in MLB.com’s power rankings trailing the Washington Nationals who are 22-12. Following the Yankees in the power rankings are the Houston Astros

who are 23-11, then the Baltimore Orioles who are 22-11 and the Cleveland Indians who are 18-15. The Yankees will have to keep a close eye on the division rival Orioles, who they are set to play against 13 more times. They will also have to face the Astros and the Indians 14 more times. In the past week we’ve seen the Orioles slowly creep down from first place in the AL East following the drama between the Orioles and the Boston Red Sox where Manny Machado slid into Boston’s Dustin Pedroia at second base, which resulted in the Red Sox attempting to retaliate against Machado in what seemed like every at bat. The Orioles finished the four game series against the Red Sox going twoand-two, which helped the Yankees rise to the top while they won six games in row between May 2 and May 8. The Yankees picked up two wins in their series against the Toronto Blue Jays then continued to sweep the Chicago Cubs in Chicago and then beat the Cincinnati Reds in Cincinnati in their first game in a two game series. The Yankees beat the Cubs in the first game of their series off of a three-run home run from Brett Gardner in the top of the ninth. Then in the third game of the series the Yankees topped the Cubs in an 18-inning game where there was an MLB record of 48 strikeouts before traveling to play Cincinnati the next day. The Yankees rank as the best offensive team in the AL currently and second overall. They are second in runs (180), third in home runs (52), second in RBI (168), first in OBP (.357), tied for second in slugging percentage (.463), and fifth in hits (300). These team stats are just hinting at what the Yankees have in store individually. Yankee second basemen Starlin Castro of the Dominican Republic is the AL batting average leader at this point into the season batting .354 with an OBP of .393. Castro has 45 hits, 23 runs scored, six home runs, and 21 RBI in just 127 at bats this season. He has also started off the month of May very hot going 13 for 36 batting .361. Castro’s time with the Yankees has done him well thus far. The 27-year-old averages around 11.8 home runs a season and last season with the Yankees he hit a career high 21 home runs and is already hitting a home run on average every 21 at-bats in 2017. Not only do the Yankees have the player with the highest batting average, they also have a rookie who is the AL home run leader, in outfielder Aaron Judge. 25-year-old Aaron Judge is a monster in the batting box standing six feet and seven inches weighing in at 282 pounds, yet last season Judge didn’t look like he had the potential we’ve seen in him so far this season. In 2016 he only had a batting average of .179 in his first 84 Major League at bats where he only hit four home runs with 10 RBI and struck out 42 times. This season Judge is on a tear continuing his rookie year batting .317 with 13 home runs, 28 RBI, and 28 runs scored in just 104 at bats. Judge hits a home run in one of every 7.7 at bats so far this season.

JUNE 2017

W W W. E V E R Y T H I N G E L K O . C O M

In his MLB debut against the Tampa Bay Rays on August 13, of 2016, Judge hit a homerun in his first at bat. Now just one season later, the rookie is the Major League home run leader and now has hit the hardest home run ever recorded. On April 18, 2017, Judge had his first multi-home run game where one of those home runs had an exit velocity of 119.4 miles per hour. Both Castro and Judge prove that the young guns can pull their weight on this new Yankee team. With the help of Didi Gregorius and Gary Sanchez, among other young players, they’ll have a great group of young guys to build a team around nicely. Not only are the young guys starting off the 2017 season with a bang, both Matt Holiday and Brett Gardner have been leading by example as they’ve started off hot so far this season. 33-year-old outfielder Brett Gardner has averaged seven home runs a season in his nine-year career and already has hit six this season. Gardner is currently batting .260 with 12 RBI, 22 runs scored, and has stole five bags. Before 2017, he had hit two multi-homer games, now that number has doubled since then having two multi-homer games on April 29 against the Orioles and on May 2 against the Blue Jays. Four of Gardner’s six home runs this year have been insurance runs where his two go-ahead home runs were against the Orioles on April 29, and the Cubs on May 5. Gardner is the only veteran outfielder on the Yankees who has spent his whole MLB career with the Yankees. He was there to win the World Series in 2009, and he won a Gold Glove award in 2016 and was an All-Star in 2015 when he had a batting average of .259 with 16 home runs and 66 RBI. If Gardner remains on this streak throughout the season we may see him in Miami in July playing in his second All-Star game. Matt Holiday is the other veteran really pulling his weight for the Yankees so far this season. Holiday is on his 14th year in his career where he played for the Colorado Rockies, the Oakland A’s, and the St. Louis Cardinals previously. Holiday averages 27 home runs a year with 105 RBI while batting .303. Signing 37-year-old veteran Holiday in the off-season may have seemed like a gamble then, but now crossing the 30 game mark Holiday looks like a key player in moving forward. Holiday is currently batting .287 with six home runs, with 19 RBI, and 12 runs scored in 87 at-bats. Holiday has been seen playing in the outfield, designated hitter, and even first base. His first four homeruns this season were all go-ahead home runs and his fifth homer of the season marks Holiday’s 300th career home run. The 2017 Yankees continue to make watching baseball entertaining as ever, always making their crowd energized as their next player steps into the box in hopes of seeing yet another home run. Five players have five or more homers as well as having 52 team home runs. Finally, the Bronx Bombers are back.

Wonrate Gear Shows the Hunting World What Elko is All About

Elko, Nevada is home to some of the most extreme hunters and outdoorsmen of the west. It is only fitting that one of the most passionate hunting companies in the industry has recently been started right here in Elko. Wonrate Gear is a hunting apparel that aims to push the boundaries of hunting gear, but also inspire a generation of hunters. This company displays values of pride, integrity, and family, and it is clear that they are only at the beginning a long journey in the hunting industry.

of crafting his pattern, Williams created what would soon become an extremely effective tool of concealment. Williams overlaid EKG waves over each other to form a repeating pattern, then added a color palette, carefully chosen to fit a variety of environments. The main goal of the pattern is not only to blend in to the hunter's background, but primarily to break-up the hunter's outline. The Wonrate camouflage pattern uses the EKG waves to create jagged edges and contrasting colors to give the appearance of natural shadows.

Wonrate Gear was started by Joel Williams, an Elko man with a love for hunting and a passion for creating high-quality gear at an affordable price. Wonrate Gear was created for all hunters, from the extreme to the mild.

Though camouflage is among a hunter's most valuable assets, Williams understands that there is much more to hunting gear than an effective camouflage pattern. “You're only as good as your wind, your movement, and your cover, as far as hunting's concerned. But when it comes to camouflage you want something that's going to break up your outline and confuse the animal just to give you that extra second that you need to capitalize on harvesting the animal,” Williams said.

There's no surprise that Williams put his whole heart into his company, because a heart was his initial inspiration for this project. Specifically, the heart of his three year old daughter, Vayel. Though he had the idea for a hunting apparel company, he lacked a camouflage pattern for his gear. When Williams looked up at the Electrocardiogram (EKG) monitor of his daughter in the womb, he found what would soon become his camouflage. The EKG waves, displayed on the screen, were soon to be the components of the Wonrate Gear pattern – a pattern constructed from one of nature's most natural shapes. After hours of studying the history and applications of camouflage, along with late nights

Due to his understanding of effective hunting gear, Williams not only put time into the pattern, but also into the quality of his gear. He analyzed the most essential features of exceptional hunting equipment and then applied them to his designs. So far, Wonrate Gear has engineered a cutting edge series of gear at a price that is significantly lower than many other hunting brands on the market. Being paired with their camouflage pattern, which is fittingly named “Wonrate

For such a young company, Wonrate Gear has gained a noticeable amount of traction from the hunting community, due to several reasons. hunt and overcome adversity which they may face.“We are trying to build a brand that people can identify with. We want to bring people together. This is what we stand for, and this is why we build our gear,” Williams said. “It's a no brainer for me and my brand. I want to be associated with that [organization] because they show a lot of heart. It takes a lot of heart to do that. And that's exactly what our brand is all about.” Through hard work and dedication, Wonrate Gear is committed to expanding their company and inspiring the hunting community in a way never done before. cruise vacation COULD IT BE RIGHT FOR YOU?

Contributed by Sue Bradford of Journeys Around the World

Have you considered a cruise for your next vacation? Cruises continue to be one of the most popular vacations choices today and they are a great way to see a variety of places in one trip. They can also be a very affordable option for your families next vacation, a fun couples trip or a romantic anniversary. Here are some helpful tips and ideas to make the most of your next cruise.

46

1

Picking your cruise line wisely. Each cruise line has its own demographic that it caters to. When you think Disney, you think children. When you say Princess, you think “the Love Boat. Remember this. The last thing you want on your romantic vacation is a deck full of screaming children in line for the waterslide while you are trying to relax. Do your research and make sure that particular cruise line is right for you.

2

Stateroom type and location. Probably the 2nd most important choice of your cruise will be picking your room type and location. Stateroom types are pretty much the same on each cruise line. You have interior rooms, which have no windows what so ever and are the cheapest in price, ocean view rooms, which will have a picture window, balcony rooms, which will provide you with your own private balcony and Suites, which will offer the most room inside, plus a private balcony as well. Make sure you choose what fits your budget,

but your vacation plans as well. You ALWAYS want to book at least a balcony room on an Alaskan cruise so you can sit outside in private, drink your coffee and see the glaciers as you sail by them. Deck location is also important. If you want peace and quiet make sure you choose a deck without access to bars, nightclubs or the kids clubs. Also a midship stateroom can make a big difference for someone who may become seasick.

3

Remember, cruises are not ALL-INCLUSIVE. There will be additional costs on a cruise, like excursions, gratuities and most importantly your bar bill. Drinks are not included on a cruise (although a few cruise line are trying this out on select sailings). Prepare yourself for this as drinks on a cruise can cost $10 each or more. On a 7 day cruise, that can really add up. Research the drink packages that the particular cruise line you are sailing has to offer and buy it if you think you are going to drink alcohol on a daily basis. You will save a lot

of money by doing this. Also make sure you book your excursions with a reputable tour company or on the cruise lines direct website or on board the ship. That way you know you are guaranteed a spot on the tour and you know you will be brought back to the cruise ship on time.

4

Speaking of being on time, remember to never be late getting back to the ship. Ever!! It will leave you behind. A cruise ship waits for no one. When the schedule says the ships leaves port at 4, make sure you are back on the ship by 3. The last thing you want is to be left at port in a foreign country.

5

Please travel with your passport. If you don’t have one, get one as soon as possible. On a closed loop cruise (a cruise that starts and ends in the same US port), you technically don’t need a passport, but god forbid you fall ill or get injured while in a foreign country. You will need that passport to get back home. The last thing you want or need if you are sick or hurt in another country is to be fighting with the US embassy about your citizenship. 42ND ANNUAL

Lamoille Country Fair

June 25th | 8am-4pm

Sunday June 25th, 8am until 4pm the Lamoille Grove and surrounding area will become abuzz with excitement, food, crafts, and entertainment for all ages. The Lamoille Country Fair was created 42 years ago, by the Lamoille Women’s Club, with Carole Lewis chairwoman. The main purpose was to find a means to maintain and improve the Lamoille Club House. The Fair has become one of the more popular hand crafted extravaganzas in Elko Country. The ONE DAY event begins at 8am and continues until 4pm. Park and Ride wagons provided by Branch 155-Early Day Gas Engine & Tractor Association are available at the entrance to the community of Lamoille on Canyon Road. There is a van that provides transportation to the Grove from Canyon Road also. More parking is available in Lamoille in two separate locations. One lot off of Country Lane which is past O’Carrolls’s, LEFT on Country Lane and past the Antique Barn on the right. Handicapped parking is about 50 feet further to the left. Scout Troop 850 mans the lot in the center of Lamoille to your right on Primrose Lane. Donations for parking are

appreciated by both Scout Troops. There is NO ADMISSION charge to visit the Country Fair food and craft booths. Please, NO PETS, as they are not allowed. Service animals are allowed with proper identification. Upon entering the main entrance to the Fair your taste buds will be enticed by the smells of many food booths to sustain one through the shopping experience. Sit in the shade in the large tent that is being provided by the Event Source to relax and enjoy your meal provided by the food court vendors which will include tacos, pulled pork, fry bread, chili cheese fries, barbecued hamburgers, hot dogs, and tri tip. For the thirsty, there is the Lamoille Women’s Club famous lemonade. The lemonade is made with fresh squeezed lemon juice, and topped off with fresh mint if desired. Interested in something a little sweeter? Try ice cream or milkshakes by A & I concessions, or shaved ice by Dessert Sno. While visiting the Fair take a minute to get tickets for an opportunity to own the Lamoille Women’s Club Quilt, “Berries & Blossoms”, made by club member Joyce Kay and quilted

2017 HO USI NG REPORT:

THINGS TO KNOW

“We expect a seasonal uptick in sales this time of year and March certainly met and somewhat exceeded that expectation,” said Dave Liniger, RE/MAX CEO, Chairman of the Board and Co-Founder. “We don’t anticipate the tightening inventory to ease up in most markets until new home construction can catch up to its pre-recession pace. Until then, sellers will enjoy a fast-paced market and buyers will need to work with their agents to get in the right home.”

7 LOVE SPF

reasons everyone should

Everyone loves the sun, but not everyone acknowledges the negative affects it can have on the skin, or the benefits of following safe sun practices. Here at GlyMed Plus we want to give people the ability to have their youngest looking skin so we are sharing 7 reasons to help you fall in love with SPF. 1.85% of aging on the skin is caused by extrinsic factors such as Ultra Violet radiation and environmental pollution. 2.When unprotected skin is exposed to UV radiation the stratum corneum thickens as a way to protect the skin. This thickening can last for a few days after exposure leading to irritation, dryness, and flaking. 3.MMP production is increased within minutes of being exposed to UV rays unprotected. MMP’s are enzymes that break down collagen and elastin resulting in accelerated signs of aging, such as wrinkles and sagging of the skin. 4.UV radiation damages skin cells. Once a cell has been damaged it will continue to split and act in an abnormal manner leading to over active melanocytes, decreased desquamation, and transepidermal water loss.

5.Sun damage leads to skin dehydration, decreasing the transportation of nutrients to the cells, an impaired barrier function, and trans epidermal water loss. 6.Melanin production increases to protect the skin from UV damage which can look like an even tan at the time, but will lead to over active melanocytes, uneven pigmentation and sun spots later on. 7. UV Exposure on unprotected skin causes free radical damage, which can lead to cell mutation and the development of skin cancer.

GlyMed Plus offers multiple options for broad spectrum sun protection products that will fit any skin type.

Principles

behind the ideal protein weight loss method The body has three sources of energy from which it draws to meet its metabolic needs. Carbohydrates, Muscle, and fat. Chronologically, the body will first draw on its carbohydrate reserve before turning to muscle and fat. During the weight loss phases of the protocol, we limit carbohydrate intake to encourge the body to turn to its fat and muscle components for energy. By eating high biological protein foods, the protocol helps to support muscle mass and teaches dieters how to develop smarter eating habits and lifestylke choices so they can maintain a stable weight after weight loss is achieved.

Our patients only pay the in-network price, even if we are not participating in their insurance network. In fact, since we opened our center in June 2015, on average our patients have only paid $266 out of pocket for an entire course of radiation treatment. The list of diets can go on and on. It can be overwhelming to translate the information we have access to on the internet for the latest diet fads but do they really work? Or are they a fad that won’t last longer than a gallon of milk left in the car during the month of July?

At the beginning of 2017 a group of Registered Dietitian Nutritionists and other nutrition experts ranked 38 different diets or diet programs and compiled it into a report for US News and World Report*. Criteria included in the review process included feasibility/ease to follow the diet, effects on short term and long term weight loss, safety and nutritional adequacy, and how the diet can help prevent chronic disease such as diabetes and heart disease. Costs and exercise associated with the diet or program were not part of the analysis. Contributed by Courtney Nalivka Clinical Dietitian at Northeastern Nevada Regional Hospital

Here are six of the 38 diets reviewed that might clear up some of your questions about whether the diet program you are interested

in would be worth looking into or if you would be better off avoiding the diet all together.

The Paleo Diet (the “Caveman Diet”)

Claim to fame: This diet gives your body a chance to restore its natural balance in 30 days. It improves digestion, mental health, sleep, brain function, and skin health and can result in weight loss.

Claim to fame: If we eat like our ancestors did

How it works: This diet is broken down into two

How it works: Foods included in this diet can

phases. In Phase 1 added sugars (natural and artificial), legumes, grains, dairy, alcohol, additives such as MSG and sulfites, and baked goods or junk foods (even if made with WHOLE30 approved foods) are eliminated. There are no cheat days allowed and no weighing during this period. It is designed for three meals per day and no snacking between meals. Foods allowed are meats, seafood, eggs, fruits, vegetables, and natural fats. In Phase 2 you reintroduce foods in the following order: Gluten-free alcohol, legumes, gluten-free grains, dairy, and then all other grains. During this time you will evaluate whether the foods cause any negative side effects.

Pros and Cons: This diet Improves self-awareness, promotes grocery shopping with a list and planning weekly menus. The recipes can be added to any healthy meal plan even if the diet isn’t followed. The cons are that this diet eliminates many foods that provide essential nutrients for 30 days or indefinitely, it can be hard to follow for a month, and it lacks strong scientific evidence at this time. It can also be difficult to follow if you are on the road, have children, or work a busy job.

be anything that is hunted, fished, or gathered. This includes fish, shellfish, poultry, eggs, veggies, roots, fruits, berries. Foods that are not included are grains, dairy, legumes, sugar, and salt.

Pros and Cons: The pros to this diet are that this

plan encourages more fruits and vegetables in the diet. It reduces added sugars and salt, which are consumed above recommended goals most of the time. Plant protein and other plant foods can help control blood sugar, blood pressure, and can contribute to weight loss and prevention of Type 2 Diabetes. This diet can be modified to be part of a healthy lifestyle. The cons to this diet are that this plan exceeds the recommended fat and protein guidelines and does not meet basic carbohydrate guidelines. Exclusion of whole grains, legumes, and dairy can create deficiencies in calcium, Vitamin D, fiber, and other vitamins and minerals. This diet may be difficult to maintain and can be more expensive if eating organic foods.

The Ketogenic Diet

Claim to fame: With this diet your body converts your body’s

primary fuel source from glucose to fats for quicker weight loss.

How it works: On this diet you will follow a high fat, low carbohydrate diet to convert your body from burning glucose for energy to burning fat for energy. This results in faster weight loss than traditional programs. Foods included are: meats, full-fat dairy, eggs, fish, and vegetables. Foods not included are: processed sugars, fruits, grains, and other carbohydrates. Pros and Cons: The pros to this diet is that rapid weight loss can occur within about 10 days. Originally, a modified high fat diet was and still can be used to treat epilepsy in children. It is always a good idea to reduce our intake of processed foods and added sugars. The cons to this diet are that it can put your body in a state of ketosis, which is where you are burning fat for fuel and the byproducts are ketones. This can be dangerous for a person with diabetes because it can change the pH of their body and alter their blood sugar levels. Side effects of a low carbohydrate diet include fatigue, low energy levels, and decreased blood sugar. This diet also eliminates fruits and grains, which provide essential nutrition to our body. This type of diet can be difficult to follow long term, which can lead to weight regain.

S H A B O N YA D U T T O N ’ S GOOD NEIGHBOR FOR JUNE 2017

Friends 4 Life

CONTRIBUTED BY SHABONYA DUTTON OF STATE FARM, WRITTEN BY KELSIE CREAMER

Most good things in life come from friendship, therefore it should not be a surprise when an organization with the word “friend” in its name derives its origins from two women and a bond of friendship so strong that it leaves its mark on our community twenty-one years later. Marge Warmbrodt and her husband, Bruce were living in Ruby Valley Nevada when they first met Carolyn Burroughs. She was an energetic young woman who very quickly stole their hearts. She had moved to Ruby Valley to help her family with their ranch and would travel daily to the Warmbrodts’ to use the phone to call her brothers in California. Carolyn had recently gone through chemotherapy and a mastectomy for breast cancer. Marge was a survivor herself and this brought the two women closer together. In a short amount of time Carolyn married was pregnant with a little girl, and an enormous joy to everyone. Marge was worried. She remembered the warnings from her doctor about becoming pregnant and the additional dangers while fighting breast cancer. A year after Carolyn’s daughter was born her cancer returned and it was much worse. She would need extensive treatment including a bone marrow transplant and radiation therapy. Carolyn asked her dear friend for help. Carolyn did not have insurance, or the money to pay the $120,000 for the bone marrow transplant. She and her husband Kelly were ranchers in Ruby Valley Nevada. They were hard working neighbors. When tasked with what seemed like the insurmountable challenge of raising $120,000 Marge did not shy away from the task. She prayed on how she would raise the amount of money 80

needed in order to secure the transplant for Carolyn. They partnered with Organ Transplant Fund and started their campaign. Marge reached out to every member of the Elko community and within three weeks had raised $70,000 dollars. She had enormous support from the Elko Daily Free press and a band of volunteers. Neighbors banded together to help the young mother get the treatment she needed. During one of the picnic fundraisers in the city park Marge was unaware that she had caught the attention of a different group who was also there that day. Dave Huckaby was the new manager of Stewart Title and had brought his group to the park for a meeting and had approached Marge’s daughter to ask what was going on. A week later Marge received a call and the concept of Friends 4 Life was born. He told Marge, “You know there are a lot more Carolyns out there.” The organization was started with a small board consisting of Brett Hansen, Bobbi Hansen, Holly Gregory, Maureen Durkin, Dave Huckaby, Richard Dufurrena and Marge Warmbrodt, and a fund of $5,000, donated by The Soroptomists, Stewart Title, US Bank and Maureen Durkin. Sadly Carolyn never got well enough to receive her bone marrow transplant and succumbed to her illness in 1996. She helped to inspire a legacy that is alive and well in our community today. Marge Warmbrodt is currently serving as the President and CEO of Friends 4 life and is only founding member still active in the organization. Yet she shares the great responsibility of being on the board with ten other community members. They are Tom Gust of Nevada Bank and Trust, Bob Collyer of Elko Tool and Fastener, Scott Rogers of Collision Auto, KP

Polkinghorne of Coldwell Banker, Shabonya Dutton of State Farm, Tina Murray of Greater Nevada Mortgage, Billie Crapo of the Elko Chamber of Commerce, Kitty Nash of Vogue, Wendy Greener of Dialysis Center, and Angela Fraser of Red Lion. As a community Friends 4 Life is able to reach out and help serve individuals who need assistance with paying for prescriptions, travel expenses for treatments, specialized equipment, or specialized treatments. All of these are paid for through Friends 4 Life so that individuals are not forced to lose Medicaid eligibility. Without the assistance offered by Friends 4 Life many of these community members would either be without the medications they needed, or the wheelchair that makes their daily life more sustainable. They may not be able to travel back and forth to Salt Lake City to see a specialist for their condition. The organization receives its referrals from medical providers in the community. This way they can assure that the individuals they are assisting have already been through a screen process. All Donations made to the organization are tax deductible. If you would like to make a donation you can mail one to P O Box 1143 Elko NV 89803 or you may drop off a donation at Nevada Bank and Trust. We would like to thank Friends 4 Life for being a Good Neighbor for over twenty years. For stepping up and taking care of the sick people in our community and helping them get the care they need. As Marge Warmbrodt says, “it is Neighbors helping Neighbors.

Bard in the Yard

Shakespeare under the stars returns to Duncan LittleCreek Gallery with Silver Stage Players’ Bard in the Yard 4- Royally Screwed! This unique production features excerpts from the works of William Shakespeare performed in the intimate and outdoor setting of the DLC Gallery backyard. Conceived by director Frank L. Sawyer in 2011, the Bard in the Yard project explores themes in Shakespeare’s plays.

86

2017’s version of this highly popular project features the theme, “Royally Screwed”. Power draws the corrupt and also corrupts the pure. Regicide, kinslaying, murder, and the lies....oh yes, all the lies. But, while kings and queens play their games it is the pawns, the people, who are royally screwed! We explore the struggles between the lower class and those in the aristocracy. Sometimes the little guys strike back in anger, humor, and violence. Most of the time the poor see those in power taking advantage of those under their rule. The show is narrated by Shakespeare’s classic character Puck from A Midsummer Night’s Dream.

Performances are June 22-24, 29, 30 and July 1 beginning at 7 PM in the backyard of the Duncan LittleCreek Gallery located at 518 Commercial Street in Elko Nevada. The show includes passages from King Lear, The Merchant of Venice, Othello, and A Midsummer Night’s Dream among others. Tickets are only $10 and are available at the door.

forward to hosting our guests and providing a unique and compelling evening of Shakespeare outdoors.” He continued, “Our cast and crew will work very hard to offer the community a wonderful evening of theater.” Joining the group in the event’s planning, production, and performance are local actors and volunteers Kate Rhoswen, Cassie Rizzi, Thomas Stafford, Caleb Tapia, Derek Burwell, Josh Webster, Don Jones, Nick Cdebaca, Heidi DuSoleil, Meghan Hendrickson, Laura Cdebaca, Dawn Dolberg, Meghan Jonas, Tan Li, Caleb Micheli, Sean Miklovic, Ian Montgomery, Erika Patrick, Sam Nyberg, Wendy Ramirez, Becky Brown, Emily Anderson, Sandy Beeler, David Patrick, John Wright, John Wells, Albert Harmer, Toril Hansen, Kodi Goddard, Jacques Errecart, Joan Anderson, and Jennifer Anderson.

Shakespeare's words have endured for over 400 years, and still reach across the centuries as powerfully as ever.

William Shakespeare was born in Stratford-upon-Avon, on April 23, 1564 and raised there by John Shakespeare and Mary Arden. An English poet and playwright, Shakespeare is considered the greatest writer of all time. Between 1585 and 1592, he began a successful career in London as an actor, writer, and part owner of the King’s Men acting company. Shakespeare produced most of his known works between 1589 and 1613. His early plays were mainly comedies and histories while his later works were mostly tragedies. Hamlet, King Lear, Romeo and Juliet, and Macbeth, are considered some of the finest works in the English language. His plays have been translated into every major language and are performed more often than any other playwright’s.

Located at 516 Commercial Street in Elko, Duncan LittleCreek Gallery and Bar is one of Elko’s arts centers featuring paintings, jewelry, sculptures, and more. DLC offers a comfortable, smoke-free atmosphere with an extensive list of wine, craft beer, specialty martinis, and cocktails made with the freshest ingredients. DLC was voted “Best Bar” in the Elko Daily Free Press Readers’ Choice Awards and is a favorite destination for locals and area visitors alike. It’s a great place to see live music, plays, artist receptions, book parties, weddings, and other occasions. Marijuana and Pets: What Pet Owners Need to Know Elko Veterinary Clinic Client Service Representative Karen Smith

Now that adults 21 and older in the state of Nevada can legal possess up to 1 ounce of marijuana, don’t think that it is okay for your four legged friends. Remember that just because you might enjoy something, don’t think that your pets will. Marijuana can be very toxic to pets. Veterinarians are encountering more incidents of marijuana poisoning in pets, mostly dogs. A study from Colorado recently published in the Journal of Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care reported a four-fold increase in the number of dogs treated for marijuana intoxication from 2005-2010. This occurred in states that had legalized medical marijuana. Dried marijuana plants, baked goods using marijuana and oils/extract made from hash (derived from marijuana) are very desirable to your pets. Some may even attempt rolling in the dried plant. What makes these edibles even worse is when they

90

JUNE 2017

W W W. E V E R Y T H I N G E L K O . C O M

contain chocolate or artificial sugars which are also very toxic to pets. How are pets harmed by marijuana you may ask? The most common way is by eating the dried plant. Also consuming foods made with marijuana, such as brownies, cookies, even butter. If the food contains chocolate, the harmful effect is increased even more. Even inhaling the smoke can harm your pet. The tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) in pot is the most toxic cannabinoid and will affect the nervous system. If you suspect you pet has ingested marijuana in some form, here are a few signs to watch for: glassy eyes, stumbling or loss of motor coordination, including balance, dilated pupils, vomiting, hypothermia, urinary incontinence, possible agitation and excitement. Even more serious symptoms include severe changes in heart rate, coma, tremors and seizures may also occur. Most symptoms usually happen 30 to 60 minutes after ingestion. Effects will

last for about 12 hours however, they can last for days because the cannabinoids are stored in fat.

However, research has not yet established safe dosing guidelines.

If your pet has gotten into some marijuana or marijuana-laced product, don’t wait for symptoms to start. Seek treatment from your veterinarian! Please be honest with your veterinarian they need this information to properly treat your pet. It may also save you the expense of further testing. Your veterinarian likely will treat your pet with IV fluids, anti-vomiting medication, and if a large amount is consumed, may use activated charcoal to bind the poison. The treatment response varies with each pet, but usually takes 18 to 36 hours. While it is extremely rare for pets to ingest enough marijuana to cause death, because tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) has a relatively high lethal dose, still seek treatment. Dogs can develop clinical signs at very low doses and can become quite symptomatic early.

Lacking rigorous scientific evidence, veterinarians cannot determine safe dosages of THC or CBD in medical marijuana for pets. Veterinarians are left relying on anecdotal reports, trial and error and claims made by companies. It is important to remember that if the tolerable and safe dose, whatever that may be, is exceeded, your pet may end up very sick and in your local veterinary hospital. Although marijuana may not kill, the consequences can turn deadly for pets if there is an overdose. The best thing to do to keep your pet safe is to keep marijuana and anything that contains marijuana out of reach of your four legged friends.

There are also many anecdotal reports of cannabis successfully treating everything from pain and nausea to anxiety and allergies in dogs, cats and horses. While there is no doubt that marijuana may possess some properties for treating some conditions in animals at this point there is a lack of scientific evidence to really endorse its wide spread use in veterinary medicine. Veterinarians really don’t even know the toxic dose let alone the therapeutic dose for multiple species. Many veterinarians do consider using cannabinoids when a pet is not responding to the approved animal drugs that are available.

Remember pot is not for pets!

There are many unanswered questions regarding medical marijuana in pets, because of the higher toxicity of tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) in dogs compared to humans, many cannabis products sold for dogs list the cannabidiol (CBD) instead of THC as the main active ingredient. Many websites and companies selling CBD- predominant substances for dogs claim that their products are “completely safe” but lack the reliable research to back those claims. There are in fact many potentially helpful chemicals in the cannabis plant, but THC and CBD usually outnumber the rest. The amount of THC or CBD is dependent on the strain of the plant. The CBD in cannabis has been shown to be the compound that may benefit human patients with various conditions. CBD reduces pain, inflammation, anxiety and seizure activity. Research suggests that CBD has lower toxicity and higher tolerability than THC in both humans and animals.
