Point of Light
2016 Governor’s Points of Light Volunteer Program Serving Veterans finalist Veterans Affair Voluntary Service Program and Award recipient Honor Flight Nevada.
2015 Governor’s Points of Light Awards ceremony finalists and recipients.
2016 Governor’s Points of Light Individual Volunteer for rural Nevada recipient Shelly Aldean (right) with Lt. Governor, Mark Hutchison (left)
Contributed by Amber Martin-Jahn, Executive Director of Nevada Volunteers and daughter of Lamoille Nevada residents who taught her the importance of volunteering at an early age.
Do you know an extraordinary volunteer that goes above and beyond the normal volunteer responsibilities? Or maybe you are involved with a volunteer program at work? Or do you have a favorite non-profit you volunteer with often? If you are volunteering, and we hope
you are, then there is likely a volunteer manager that makes the volunteer experience good enough for you to come back each time. Would you share your experience if it might earn that volunteer, volunteer manager, or program making a difference in your community a prestigious award?
Nevada Volunteers, the Governor’s Commission on Service, is pleased to announce the nomination process for the 2017 Governor’s Points of Light Award ceremony opens on May 1st. Nevada’s most prestigious volunteer recognition, the Governor’s Points of Light Award, is an opportunity to shine the light on Nevada’s brightest volunteers. Unlike other volunteer recognition programs, Points of Light Finalists are selected by a group of judges representing rural, northern, and southern Nevada, non-profit and for-profit organizations, along with the volunteer manager professional community.

Inaugurated in 2001, the Nevada Governor’s Points of Light Awards ceremony highlights regional impacts along with the private and public partnership across the nonprofit and corporate sector in volunteerism. Nevada Volunteers will recognize 3 Finalists in each category (a total of 21 individuals or programs) to the Nevada Points of Light Awards ceremony luncheon to be hosted in fall 2017 in Las Vegas, where the Award Recipients will be announced. Help us tell the story of volunteerism in your community by submitting a nomination!
Nominations are accepted May 1-31, 2017, in the following categories: • Individual-Northern Nevada • Individual-Southern Nevada • Individual- Rural Nevada • Nonprofit/Community Organization Volunteer Program • Corporate/Business Volunteer Program • Volunteer Manager • Volunteer Program serving Veterans Nomination criteria includes individuals and organizational volunteer programs in Nevada who through volunteerism: 1) Show achievement that is exemplary, measurable, and far exceeds expectations. 2) Address a need not previously met in the community. 3) Show innovation in applying a new solution to an existing social program. 4) Empower and mobilize the community to support the program or event, and support ongoing opportunities for community mobilization. 5) Show development of endurance or sustainability in a long-term solution to significant social issues through hands-on volunteer service. The service must be direct and ongoing, rather than a one-time activity, with the exception of short-term crisis situations.
To nominate someone, please

About Nevada Volunteers: Nevada Volunteers, a 501 (c) 3, is the Governor's Commission on Service and works to foster a statewide culture of service and volunteerism. When volunteers feel like their contributions are appreciated and valued by the organization, they are more likely to feel connected and continue volunteering. We know the Governor’s Points of Light Awards doesn’t recognize all of Nevada’s individuals and organizations whose dedicated efforts demonstrate a spirit of caring, goodwill, and service to others, which is why Nevada Volunteers has multiple opportunities for recognition. You can recognize volunteers with a signed Governor’s Volunteer Recognition Certificate from Governor Sandoval, at no charge. Recognize a volunteer or organization that shines the “Light” of volunteerism and brightens the lives of others with a Nevada’s “Point of Light” bookmark, letter from Nevada Volunteers, and acknowledgement on Nevada Volunteers’ communications. My passion is photography. My work has evolved into more of an artistic endeavor and less of a commercial one. I will use almost any type of camera from 35mm to large format view cameras, to the latest digital wonders. I have focused on the Ruby Mountain Range since 2009. Wildlife fascinates me. My subject matter now features landscapes of wilderness; the flora, fauna, and objects relating to the State of Nevada.
I work to bring life and recognition to the mundane and the ordinary. I seek the abandoned wide open spaces, and the simple beauty of the world around me. I shoot film and digital, often combining the two in a process that I call 'digilog'. I now also make my own frames for my original prints. I only print one fine art photo of each image file. Copies can be ordered online.

Kale Pesto Pasta Salad with Sun-Dried Tomatoes & Broccoli

Ingredients:
3 1/2 pound whole chicken • Kosher salt • Freshly ground black pepper • 3 to 4 garlic cloves, lightly smashed • 1 lemon • 1 bay leaf • 5 sprigs fresh thyme • Olive oil •
1 slice sourdough, cut 3/4-inch thick (day old bread is perfect!) • Salt •
For the Creme Fraiche Glaze: • 1 cup creme fraiche • 1 lemon, zested and juiced •1 tablespoon shallots, grated on a fine zester • 1 teaspoon pepper
Preparation: The day before you plan to cook the chicken, season it well inside and out with salt and pepper. Stuff the cavity of the chicken with the garlic, 1 of the lemons, the bay leaf and thyme. Refrigerate. On the day/night you plan to cook the bird, take the chicken out of the refrigerator 30 minutes before you plan to roast it. Preheat the oven to 425 to 450 degrees. In a pan large enough to accommodate the chicken, oil the pan lightly with olive oil, place the piece of sourdough in the center of the pan and then put the chicken on top of the bread. Drizzle the bird with olive oil or brush with butter (we use olive oil at the Grill). Place the pan in the oven and roast for 40 to 50 minutes, basting it every 12 to 15 minutes with the fat and drippings that render from the bird. White the chicken roasts, assemble the glaze by combining all of the ingredients and whisking them together. When the chicken is almost done (the juices are running pink and/or the legs are beginning to wiggle a bit when you give them a shake), take a pastry brush and slather on a bit of the creme fraiche glaze. The glaze will begin to caramelize. Brush on another layer and let this last glazing caramelize. At this point the chicken should be cooked through and nicely golden brown. The sourdough underneath the chicken will be nicely browned and crisped on the side in contact with the pan, and moist and juicy on the side in contact with the chicken. Let the chicken rest for 10 minutes.

Ingredients:
For the Meat Sauce: • 12 ounce box gluten-free penne pasta • 1 medium crown broccoli chopped into florets • 1 cup kale pesto sauce • 1 bunch green onion chopped • ½ cup sun-dried tomatoes in oil drained and patted dry •½ teaspoon sea salt • Parmesan cheese for serving
For the Kale Pesto Sauce: •4 cups kale leaves packed •2 cups fresh basil leaves packed •4 cloves garlic minced •1 /2 cup raw walnuts •½ cup pine nuts or more walnuts •3 tablespoons rice vinegar* •1 /2 teaspoon salt to taste •1 /2 cup Parmesan cheese optional •1 cup olive oil
Preparation PREPARE THE KALE PESTO SAUCE: Prepare the kale pesto sauce by adding all of the ingredients except for the olive oil to a food processor. Pulse a few times to roughly chop all of the ingredients. Leaving the food processor on, drizzle the olive oil slowly through the top, until it’s completely incorporated. Transfer pesto sauce to a jar and refrigerate until ready to use. PREPARE THE PASTA SALAD: Bring a full pot of water to a boil and add the pasta and broccoli florets. Cook according to the instructions on the package of pasta (Note: I usually cook gluten-free pasta for 1 to 2 minutes less than the package specifies, because I like my pasta very al dente), or until both pasta and broccoli reach desired doneness. Strain the pasta and broccoli and rinse with lukewarm water. Set aside to cool. Once cool, chop the broccoli florets finely and place both pasta and broccoli in a large serving bowl. Add the green onion, sun-dried tomatoes, and sea salt to the serving bowl along with 1 cup of the kale pesto. Toss everything together until pasta is well coated. Serve with freshly grated Parmesan cheese.

FOR THE SEVEN-MINUTE FROSTING FOR THE CAKE • 3 large egg whites • 1 cup sifted cake flour • 1 1/4 cups sugar • 1 1/2 cups superfine sugar • 14 large egg whites (1 3/4 cups), • 5 tablespoons cold water room temperature • 1/4 teaspoon cream of tartar • 1 tablespoon warm water • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract • 1/2 teaspoon salt FOR THE TOPPING • 1 1/2 teaspoons cream of tartar • 3 to 4 cups flaked coconut • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
Ingredients:
Preparation: Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Sift together flour and 3/4 cups sugar four times. In the bowl of a stand mixer on medium speed, beat together egg whites and water until foamy. Add salt, cream of tartar, and vanilla; beat until soft peaks form. Increase speed to medium-high and sprinkle in remaining sugar, 1 tablespoon at a time. Beat until stiff but not dry.Transfer to a large bowl. In six additions, sift dry ingredients over meringue, folding in quickly but gently. Pour batter into an ungreased 10-inch tube pan with removable bottom. Smooth top with an offset spatula. Run a knife through batter to release air bubbles. Bake for 35-40 minutes, until golden brown and springy to touch. Invert pan on its legs or over the neck of a glass bottle, and let cool completely, about 1 hour. Make the frosting: In the heatproof bowl of an electric mixer set over a saucepan of simmering water, combine egg whites, sugar, water, and cream of tartar. Cook over medium heat, whisking frequently, until sugar is dissolved and mixture is foamy, about 5 minutes. Attach the bowl to a stand mixer fitted with the whisk attachment. Beat the mixture on high speed, about 7 minutes. Beat in the vanilla. Carefully run a long offset spatula or knife around the inner and outer perimeter of the cake pan to release cake. Place on a plate, bottom side up. Using a long serrated knife, carefully slice off 1 1/2 inches from the top of the cake, being sure not to break the layer. Set aside. Cut out a 1-inch-wide, 1-inch-deep channel halfway between the center and edge of cake. Spread icing into channel and over entire layer. Sprinkle with coconut. Gently place reserved layer on top and ice with remaining frosting. Sprinkle with coconut and serve immediately.
1 1/3 C buttermilk, room temp 2 large eggs, separated, plus 4 egg whites, room temperature •3 T unsalted butter, melted • 1/2 teaspoon pure vanilla extract •2 T cane syrup • Vegetable-oil cooking spray • Ricotta and blueberries, for serving
Ingredients:
•
•
•
2 cups all-purpose flour • 2 teaspoons baking powder • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda • 3 T poppy seeds • 3/4 teaspoon coarse salt • 1 T finely grated lemon zest, plus 3 T juice
Preparation: Combine flour, baking powder, baking soda, poppy seeds, salt, and lemon zest in a large bowl. In a separate bowl, whisk together buttermilk, lemon juice, egg yolks, butter, vanilla, and syrup. Whisk buttermilk mixture into flour mixture until just combined (do not overmix). Beat egg whites with a mixer fitted with the whisk attachment on mediumhigh speed until stiff peaks form, about 3 minutes. Stir one-third of egg whites into batter. Gently fold in remaining egg whites (do not overmix; streaks of whites should be visible). Preheat a griddle or large nonstick skillet over medium; coat with a thin layer of cooking spray. Spoon 1/3 cup batter per pancake onto griddle. Cook, undisturbed, until bubbles appear on top and edges are set, 2 to 3 minutes. Flip and cook until puffed and golden, about 2 minutes more. Transfer to a wire rack set in a rimmed baking sheet; keep warm in a 225 degrees oven until ready to serve. Serve, with butter, ricotta, blueberries, and more syrup.

- PLANNING YOUR -
Landscape Contributed by Marvel Clyde, Owner, Colorscapes Greenhouse and Nursery
Prior planning prevents poor performance and landscaping with shrubs is living proof of that adage. Soils that have been improved with organic matter lightly tilled in will hold then release needed water and nutrients while allowing excess water to drain away. By improving the overall quality of the entire garden area intending for planting rather than randomly sticking plants in the ground, you will be creating a plant community with plants that work together as a cohesive design that is easier to maintain and visually pleasing. Perennial groundcovers deter weeds from germinating through spring, shade the roots of surrounding shrubs and taller perennials through summer so gardens require less frequent watering and insulate roots through winter. Drifts of hardy perennials make a dynamic impact visually while blooms provide food for pollinators and attract beneficials to keep pests in check. Once you have a plan for your landscape with designated areas for gardens that include a diverse mix of perennials and shrubs, you can begin selecting varieties with the just the right height and spread to fill those areas and provide low-maintenance beauty. Used in landscape designs for decades, shrubs are a structural element used to divide areas/rooms in the same way that walls serve the interior design. Also referred to as screens, garden backdrops, and vertical elements, shrubs provide privacy and a sense of enclosure as we avoid views and noises from intrusive surroundings by creating spaces to relax and enjoy being outdoors. I advocate using a mix rather than single variety plantings in an effort to create diversity in the landscape. Spring flowers, summer fruit, and fall color are all sought after characteristics since those features add to the sensory pleasures that bees, butterflies, and birds bring as they move through your landscape. 34

Colorful Annuals, Perennials, and Shrubs Spring Hours: 8-4 Monday-Saturday
Locally owned, 753-5000 www.colorscapesgreenhouse.com Always remember to consider the look of any intended garden area from several vantage points including inside the home looking out, sitting on an adjoining deck or patio, and from the street. Shovels, spading forks, five-gallon buckets, and hoses work well as easy-to-alter props while designing to include tall, medium, and shorter plants how they will be seen from those different vantage points. Consider also the changing seasons. Since we tend to spend more time outside through summer and fall, privacy is more of an issue, and as we spend more time looking out from inside through winter, the structure/bones of the landscape are visually important and shrubs provide contrast to an otherwise one-dimensional view.

Help Birds Along the Way
- Use Oranges and Grape Jelly -
• Contributed by Lois Ports for the Bristlecone Audubon Chapter •
It can be a long journey between non-breeding sites across the Americas and the Caribbean to nesting sites in the United States and Canada. Along the way, birds may need to rest and refuel, and the health and safety of these sites is critical to the survival of migratory birds. In 2017, International Migratory Bird Day celebrates the importance of these habitats and encourages everyone to get involved in protecting these areas. Your own backyard may serve as a stopover site, especially if it provides the food, water, and shelter birds need, along with a haven that is safe from threats, such as free-roaming cats and pane glass. Join us this year as we Help Birds Along the Way! Bristlecone Audubon will be hosting an International Migratory Bird Day field trip on Saturday, May 13, 2017. We will be going out to bird watch at a local ranch that has been designated as an Important Breeding Area. In order to minimize our impact on the area we will be meeting at the Great Basin College parking lot at 7:00 a.m. and sharing rides. If you are interested in going please contact Lois Ports at bristleconeaudubon@ gmail.com or call 775-738-4270 for further information.

Many of these migrating neo-tropical birds are very colorful and add a splash of color to our yards. Most of these birds don't eat seeds, but they do look for sugary foods as they complete their spring migration. Grape jelly set out in a small, shallow container, may attract the birds to your backyard as breeding season begins. They may also visit hummingbird feeders, as long as they have perches. Birding stores sell oriole feeders that are specifically designed to attract orioles with sugar water. You can also put out orange halves. Replace the fruit daily to prevent drying or growth of

harmful mold. You can even put grape jelly in the orange half for an extra treat. The Bullock’s Oriole is a medium distance migrant spending most of the winter in Mexico. Adult males are bright orange with a black back and large white wing patch. The face is orange with a black line through the eye and a black throat. Bullock’s Orioles often nest in open woodland along streams. They also occur in parks, and neighborhoods with lots of trees. They are insect eaters as well as utilizing available nectar. The Western Tanager breeds all over the west in juniper-pine mixtures at low elevation, up to spruce-fir near treeline. Their winter habitat in Middle America is generally in pine-oak woodland and forest edge. Adult male Western Tanagers are yellow birds with black wings and a flaming orange-red head. The wings have two bold wingbars; the upper one yellow and the lower white. The back and tail are black. Western Tanagers forage along branches and among leaves or needles of trees. They eat primarily insects, supplemented with small fruits in fall and winter. They sometimes catch insects in the air. They too are drawn to oranges and jelly feeders. One place to see them during breeding season is in Soldier Canyon in the Ruby Mountains.

TEAM USA HAS FINALLY DONE IT! They’ve won the World Baseball Classic (WBC). In the game that is known as America’s pastime, it’s only seen foreign nations win the tournament previously. Japan won the first two tournaments
back in 2006 and 2009 and the Dominican Republic won in 2013. Before now, Team USA’s best finish was their third place finish in 2009.

The WBC is an international tournament that showcases nations best talent on the baseball diamond. 32 nations attempted to qualify for the tournament but the tournament only hosts the best 16 teams. The 16 teams that qualified are as followed: Australia, Canada, China, Chinese Taipei, Colombia, Cuba, Dominican Republic, Israel, Italy, Japan, Korea, Mexico, Netherlands, Puerto Rico, United States, and Venezuela. On March 22, Team USA blew out the Puerto Rican national team eight-to-zero in the championship game.
Starting pitcher Marcus Stroman of the Toronto Blue Jays, took the spotlight as he threw a no-hitter through six innings only giving up one hit to Angel Pagan to start the seventh inning. Pagan is currently a free agent in the MLB. The pressure of the championship game was on Stroman’s side. When he previously faced Puerto Rico on March 17, Stroman only pitched 4.2 innings giving up eight hits and four runs, where all four runs came in the first inning. Thankfully for Team USA, the bigger the stage the bigger the performance we can expect from Stroman as he was granted tournament MVP following the game. W W W. E V E R Y T H I N G E L K O . C O M

Team USA Ian Kinsler of the Detroit Tigers put USA on the board first with a two-run homerun in the third inning off of Seth Lugo of the New York Mets. Kinsler would finish the game going two-for-five with two RBI, two runs scored, and a walk. Two innings later, Christian Yelich of the Miami Marlins hit a RBI single to right field scoring Kinsler making it three-to-zero. Then three batters following Yelich, Andrew McCutchen of the Pittsburgh Pirates hit a RBI single to the Puerto Rican shortstop scoring Yelich making it four-to-zero to end the top of the fifth. Yelich would finish the game going two-for-five with an RBI and one run scored. A four run lead in the top of the seventh with the bases loaded, Brandon Crawford of the San Francisco Giants, singled to center field scoring Nolan Arenado, of the Colorado Rockies, and Eric Hosmer, of the Kansas City Royals. Crawford later scored on a Giancarlo Stanton single to left field making it seven-to-zero. Stanton currently plays for the Miami Marlins. Crawford would finish the game going one-for-five with two RBI while Stanton would finish going twofor-five with one RBI. The beating finally ended in the eighth inning for Puerto Rico when McCutchen grounded to the second baseman Javier Baez, of the Chicago Cubs, who threw the ball away at first leading to Arenado scoring the eighth run. McCutchen finished the game going two-for-four with two RBI, one run scored, and a walk. Puerto Rico was the runner up in the 2013 tournament losing to the Dominican Republic three-to-zero in the championship round. Puerto Rico was the dominant team heading into the championship game with an undefeated record of seven victories

whereas the USA national team had five wins with two loses. Team USA’s rode to the championship: • 3/10 Round 1 – Colombia – W 3 - 2 • 3/11 Round 1 – Dominican Republic – L 7-5 • 3/12 Round 1 – Canada – W 8 – 0 • 3/15 Round 2 – Venezuela – W 4 – 2 • 3/17 Round 2 – Puerto Rico – L 6 – 5 • 3/18 Round 2 – Dominican Republic – W 6–3 • 3/21 Semis – Japan – W 2 – 1 • 3/22 Final – Puerto Rico – W 8 – 0 Center fielder Adam Jones, of the Baltimore Orioles, had a large impact for Team USA on their road to victory. Jones hit the goahead single, which scored Crawford in the eighth inning of the semi-final game against Japan. In his hometown of San Diego on March 18 against the Dominican Republic, who were trailing four-to-two, Jones had the play of the tournament robbing fellow Oriole teammate Manny Machado of a home run in the bottom of the seventh inning. Jones, who plays 16 feet closer to second base than the average center fielder, had to cover 100 feet in order to jump over the wall to rob Machado. Machado’s hit had an exit velocity of 106.2 MPH with a launch angle of 26 degrees, which is a home run 95 percent of the time. The very next batter, Robinson Cano of the Seattle Mariners homered to left field. If Jones didn’t make that catch, the game and tournament could have had a very different outcome. Jones hit a home run on March 17 in San Diego in the bottom of the sixth against Puerto Rico closing the gap to three-tofour in the eventual loss. Jones also came in clutch in his hometown on March 15 when he hit a solo home run in the bottom of the eighth to tie the game against Venezuela.
Team USA Three batters after Jones’ home run, Hosmer hit a two-run home run to center field to give USA their four-to-two victory. Jones finished the tournament with a batting average of .200 with two doubles, two home runs, and five RBI. The numbers might not jump off of the page, but in only eight games Jones had quite the impact. Giancarlo Stanton made sure his power was put on display in his biggest offensive highlight of the tournament. On March 18 against the Dominican Republic, Team USA was tied in a two-to-two game in the top of the fourth inning with the highest paid player in Stanton coming to the plate. Crawford was on base as Stanton hit the first ball he saw a whopping 424 feet with the exit velocity of 117.3 MPH giving Team USA a four-to-two lead.
all the hardware they have in their trophy case, each player’s contracts for their teams in the MLB are 13 million dollars annually or more. Each player is expected to have over 200 million-dollar contracts in the next two seasons. Afraid of letting their team down, they chose to sit out to guarantee they’ll be back healthy to start the 2017 season. Didi Gregorius of the New York Yankees was injured during the WBC playing for the Netherlands national team and is expected to miss the first few weeks of the season. Even though Team USA was missing some of their nations best players they were still able to overcome the odds and take home their first WBC championship. Hopefully the outcome of this year’s tournament will entice our stars in the three or four years to represent Team USA in their chance to be back-to-back champions.
According to Statcast, Stanton’s WBC homerun was the fourth hardest home run of the Statcast era. Stanton owns the first (119.2 MPH), second (118.5 MPH), and now fourth place spots on that list. Team USA ended up beating the Dominican Republic six-to-three on the 18th with two runs coming from McCutchen in the top of the eighth. Stanton would finish the tournament with a batting average of .227 with four RBI, one home run, and two doubles. Team USA’s rode to victory might’ve been a little easier if a few more of American born stars chose to play. Clayton Kershaw of the Los Angeles Dodgers, Mike Trout of the Los Angeles Angel of Anaheim, and Bryce Harper of the Washington Nationals all chose not to play among many other players. Each player has won a MVP in the past and Kershaw is a three time Cy Young award winner. Despite

Ya Mon! MONTEGO BAY, JAMAICA Contributed by Sue Bradford of Journeys Around the World
YA MON!! Looking for a vacation destination that has it all? Then look no further than Montego Bay, Jamaica. With beautiful beaches, wonderful food and warm, welcoming smiles, what more could you need?
Ask anyone who knows me well, anyone and they will tell you that I am a Jamaica girl. I love this place. Everything about it. I could talk about it for hours. And I am thrilled that I have been able to share that love with so many of my clients. They are now experiencing exactly what I have been talking about. This month we will explore the area of Montego Bay, Jamaica and what makes it so special. Be sure to visit one of the many Great Houses located on the island. The most famous in the Montego Bay area is the Rose Hall Great House. Said to be haunted by the spirit of its head mistress, Annie Palmer, who

tortured her staff and murdered her husbands. Night tours here are especially popular, but you can take a tour during daylight hours, if you aren’t feeling that brave. Visit the beautiful Doctor’s Cave beach for a day with your feet in white sand beaches and some of the bluest waters you have ever seen. The snorkeling here is amazing, and you can take off right from the beach. Visit with the local beach vendors and learn about their island home and what makes it special to them. After your beach day be sure to stop downtown at the Hip Strip, for some shopping and
some local cuisine. Try out the famous Jerk recipes at Scotchie’s or stop and try a patty at Juci Patties. Of course, there is always amazing seafood to be had as well. Caught locally and always fresh. Would you rather be active outdoors and not just relax on the beach? Montego Bay has many activities to choose from. How about a romantic sunset catamaran cruise, or a day ziplining through the canopy of the trees? You can ride a horse in the ocean, paddle board or ride ATV’s. The golfing is excellent here, with many courses located in the vicinity. The choices are endless and totally up to
you. There are many wonderful tour companies to choose from here. All tour companies are required to file with the Jamaica tourist board for your safety. Hiring a local guide is a great way to experience the true “Jamaica” As always, if you have questions on this location, or any others, please call me, Sue Bradford, your local travel agent at Journeys Around the World travel. My services are free of charge and my level of customer service is second to none. Call me at 775-781-9573. I would be more than happy to help you plan your next vacation.

YOUR WISH LIST IS OUR CHECKLIST Contributed by RE/MAX Gold Most people have an idea of what their dream home would look like (and if you need inspiration, we’ve created several Pinterest boards). You can’t always get everything you want in a home – but how do you make sure your new home will come close? Work with an experienced professional – like a RE/MAX agent. Among other things that make your home hunt successful, RE/MAX agents know things like:
1. The neighborhood
3. How to save time
Your agent will have the inside scoop on the neighborhoods you’re looking at, from walkability to upcoming development projects that may affect the value of your home. They’ll help you put the neighborhood’s statistics into perspective so you can make an informed decision.
Your agent can do much of the time-consuming legwork of house hunting for you, so you don’t waste time sorting through properties that ultimately aren’t a good fit.
2. How to maximize your money With in-depth knowledge of the market and what you’re looking for, your agent can help you get the most house for your money. When home shopping on a budget, they can suggest which fixer uppers can be easily (and inexpensively) updated, and which ones might be a money pit.
4. How to negotiate

FROM FOR SALE TO SOLD:
As professional negotiators, agents spend years honing their skills. They know how to read the situation and how – and when – to employ the right tactics to make sure you get a fair deal.

Collagen is one of the key structures in the skin, and as you age, collagen is one of the most important structures to support not only in the skin but also the body. Without collagen essentially our bodies would not work or function very well.

Principles
behind the ideal protein weight loss method The body has three sources of energy from which it draws to meet its metabolic needs. Carbohydrates, Muscle, and fat. Chronologically, the body will first draw on its carbohydrate reserve before turning to muscle and fat. During the weight loss phases of the protocol, we limit carbohydrate intake to encourge the body to turn to its fat and muscle components for energy. By eating high biological protein foods, the protocol helps to support muscle mass and teaches dieters how to develop smarter eating habits and lifestylke choices so they can maintain a stable weight after weight loss is achieved.

The ideal protein weight loss method is not a high-protein diet... it simply offers a variety of good, quality, protein-based foods that are easily assimilated.
More
than weight loss Our medically designed protocol was developed in Europe over 25 years ago. Many of the following issues have been associated with obesity. Losing weight may help with the following conditions. Health Risks of Obesity* - Hypertension - High Blood Pressure - Type 2 Diabetes - Stroke - Gallbladder Disease - Osteoarthritis

headaches
Contributed by Dr. Todd Wendell of Ruby Mountain Chiropractic Center
|
Headaches are common, but they’re not normal.
|
DRUG CULTURE Pain relievers of various types are the most common approach to headaches. In our practice we take a more natural approach. Our objective is to find and reduce the underlying cause of a headache. HIDDEN CAUSE A common cause of headaches is from spinal bones in the neck that aren’t supporting the head properly. You might not notice your reduced ability to turn your head. But these subluxations affect nerves, muscles and even the blood supply to your head. Our thorough examination detects subluxation patterns that could be causing your headaches. If subluxations are present, you’re likely to benefit from chiropractic care. COMPENSATION REACTION Some are surprised to learn that their headaches are being caused by problems in their lower back! The upper spine compensates, shifting the head off center, causing headaches. While we can’t guarantee results, we have a high success rate with practice members who get headaches. Give us a call. Let’s sit down and discuss your unique situation.

The primary objective of chiropractic care is to find and teach you how to reduce the underlying cause of your headache.
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS: • Is the spine the source of all headaches? Not necessarily. The three most common causes are physical trauma, emotional stress or chemical toxins. Sometimes there may be a combination of factors. Our examination process helps identify the most likely cause(s). Most of the time the probable reason behind your headaches can be discovered.

• What causes subluxations? There are three basic causes of subluxations. Physical causes could include slips and falls, accidents, repetitive motions, and improper lifting. Emotions, such as stress, anger and fear can be the cause of subluxations. Chemical causes could include alcohol, drugs, preservatives, pollution and poor diet.

• I was told it was “all in my head.” Now what? The pain you feel is real. And psychological sources of pain are common. However, this “diagnosis” is often the last resort of health practitioners who have exhausted their possible explanations of the cause of your problem. In these cases, we’ve often found that undetected subluxations or abnormal position of the neck are likely culprits. • How many visits will it take? Some practice members enjoy quick symptom relief. Others notice a slow decline in their symptoms after several weeks or longer of chiropractic care. It’s impossible to predict. If you’ve had chronic headaches for many years, improvement can take time. Even more involved if your problem behind your pain has been there a long time.
• What if chiropractic care doesn’t help? If we’re unable to find and attempt to correct the cause of your particular health problem, we will refer to other experts who may be able to help. Your health and your satisfaction are our only goal. • How come my medical doctor didn’t suggest chiropractic? That’s changing. Years of prejudice and bias are giving way to research showing the benefits of problem focused chiropractic care. Attitudes are slow to change. However, as the public demands alternatives to drugs and surgery, more and more medical practitioners are referring to chiropractors.

Mike Harp
CONTRIBUTED BY SHABONYA DUTTON OF STATE FARM, WRITTEN BY KELSIE CREAMER
The crack of a bat, smell of fresh cut grass, feel of well-worn oiled leather against your fist as you rub the inside of your mitt. Images of childhood spent at the ballpark. Mike Harp, our Good Neighbor for May, set out to carry on the tradition of children being able to spend their time playing baseball or softball. He had no idea how big of a job he had gotten himself into, or really what exactly it was he was tackling at the time, though. What Mike knew is that he saw a need in his community that he had grown to love and he had an opportunity to fill it. Mike Harp is from a large Irish family in Ohio. He moved to Elko with his wife Taryn and their two children, Ayden who is twelve and Delaney who is eight, five years ago. Mike came to Elko to work as a staff Exploration Geologist for the Canadian based company Gold Standard Ventures. He and his wife left all of their family back home in Ohio. Taryn left her established career where in Mike’s words she was, “Thriving, and doing great. She stood next to me and I only am where I am because of her.” They took the time to create relationships with new friends in the community and those friendships are so close knit that they consider them family. They turned to the baseball and little league community to start establishing these relationships. Mike had

never coached before he moved to Elko, but he came from a baseball family. His dad had been a coach and he played baseball his entire life. It seemed like a natural fit. When Mike became part of Ruby Mountain Little League the fields had suffered years of mis-management and neglect. The kids had been playing with equipment and on fields that were in constant need of repair. They were not up to tournament standards in order to have a major tournament held at them and there was never enough money to really have them brought up to any sustainable condition. Over the last five year span while coaching Mike has simultaneously been traveling to Vancouver Canada for work. He meets with his CEO Jon Awde regularly and he would always brag about how great his baseball team was doing. He would also talk about how much more he wished he could do for the kids. Gold Standard Ventures has been a regular contributor over the years. They have contributed to the Ruby Mountain Little League All Star team in the past. They have also donated uniforms for teams, and given other monetary donations. During one of their discussions Jon asked Mike to put together a list of exactly what the league would
"He is leaving a LEGACY that will live on forever.."
need in order to be up to par and then give the company a number. Mike, at the time, was overwhelmed by the generosity and told him $5000. Jon Awde told Mike to put together a real list and come back with hard numbers and Gold Standard Ventures would take it to the Board of Directors and see what they could do. Mike came back to Elko and sat down with Julie Zeiler the Ruby Mountain Little League President and her husband Chris Zeiler. They worked together and put everything that they could think of on paper. From scoreboards, to bleachers, to updating the fields, and equipment. When all was said and done the total for the project what $72,000. They all sat in JJ’s barbeque in disbelief at the number they had come up with. They were certain there was no way that they would ever receive close to the (in their minds) ridiculous number that they had come up with. Mike hopped back on a plane and went to speak with Jon and the board. He waited while they deliberated. He says he will never forget Jon coming out and telling him, “They gave you the full seventy-two.” He just couldn’t believe it. The company had given the little league all of the money that they needed to update the fields. He remembers calling Julie and her saying, “Mike, are you serious? I’m going to cry.” He says he is lucky enough to work for a company with the vision to see the project and the potential for the youth in it.

The fields have been transformed now through hard work of the community members. Over 40 volunteers have been working on the fields. Not only has Gold Standard Ventures very generously donated but National Drilling has also donated $5000 dollars towards the project. They also have donated equipment and crews. The players will be stepping onto the fields for the first time completely unaware that the transformation has taken place. “That is the moment. That is the look I’m waiting for. To see those kids faces when they step out onto the field for the first time. That’s what all this has been for,“ according to Mike. He just wants to be the guy in the bleachers eating a hot dog as the game is going on. He is leaving a legacy that will live on forever. He knows that you impact a community through its youth and now the generations that come after him will have something to build upon. A huge thank you to Mike and Gold Standard Ventures from Shabonya Dutton State Farm and we wish you a very good season.

Toxic Foods for Dogs & Cats Elko Veterinary Clinic Technician Intern: Gracie Daniels
It’s finally springtime in Elko and with good weather, comes barbequing and
picnics! While you are filling up on that
good food, keep an eye on what your dog or cat might be eating! We, at Elko
Veterinary Clinic, want your pets to be the healthiest they can be. Keep these foods and additives in mind and avoid feeding them to your pets.
DOGS: 1. Chocolate/Caffeine: Dark chocolate is the most dangerous for your pup! The darker the chocolate, the more caffeine and theobromine they contain. Both of these can cause serious illness in dogs. Symptoms include: vomiting, diarrhea, increased thirst, abdominal discomfort, lethargy, muscle tremors, irregular heartbeat, high body temperature, seizures and possibly death. 2. Xylitol: Xylitol is an artificial sweetener. It is found in many substances such as toothpaste, cough drops, sugar free gum and candy, and even peanut butter! If your pet ingests xylitol, it can cause a lifethreatening drop in blood sugar and liver damage. Symptoms include vomiting, seizures and loss of coordination, which can occur anywhere from a few minutes to several hours after ingestion. 3. Garlic/Onions: Eating anything in the onion family is dangerous to dogs; they cause gastroenteritis, anemia and serious damage to the red blood cells. Unfortunately, symptoms often take days to appear. If you suspect your dog has eaten onions or garlic, look for lethargy, weakness and orange to dark redtinged urine. Japanese breeds of dogs, such as Akitas and Shiba Inus, tend to be more sensitive to garlic and onions.

Cats: 1. Dog food: Cats are true carnivores and dog food does not have the right balance of nutrients for a cat to survive. Your cat’s diet should contain plenty of vitamin A, taurine, arachidonic acid and protein. Dogs are able to produce taurine and arachidonic acid on their own while cats cannot; they have to get it from their diet. Without the proper diet, your cat can develop heart disease, vision and dental issues. 2. Grapes/Raisins: Like dogs, grapes and raisins can cause rapid kidney failure in cats, even just a small amount. Within 12 hours of ingestion, vomiting and hyperactivity can occur. In just 24 hours, symptoms expand to lethargy, diarrhea, reduced appetite, abdominal pain, decreased urination and abdominal pain. 3. Dairy products: Cats have a hard time digesting the lactose in milk. Kittens get a small amount from their mother’s milk when they are young, but their adult systems cannot handle the reintroduction of lactose. Symptoms include upset stomach and diarrhea.
4. Grapes/Raisins: Grapes and raisins can cause kidney failure in dogs. Symptoms can occur 12 hours after consumption; they include lethargy, vomiting, and diarrhea. If the symptoms are left untreated, your pet will experience dehydration, decreased appetite and increased urination followed by decreased urination. Long-term effects are permanent kidney disease and some dogs can even die of kidney failure in 3-4 days. 5. Alcohol/Raw bread dough: Both alcohol and raw bread dough contain ethanol and beer contains hops, which cause intoxication in dogs. Both are poisonous in small amounts. Intoxication symptoms include; vomiting, disorientation, high body temperature, restlessness, excessive panting, muscle tremors and seizures. The yeast in the bread dough can cause your pets stomach to expand, which can cause serious tissue damage and difficulty breathing.
4. Chocolate/Caffeinated drinks: It’s not just poisonous for dogs, but cats too! Chocolate and caffeinated beverages contain substances called methylxanthines. Symptoms of ingestion include; vomiting and diarrhea, high body temperature, muscle tremors, abnormal heart rhythm, abdominal discomfort, increased thirst, and seizures. The darker the chocolate the more dangerous it is. 5. Lilies: Now that spring is here flowers are in bloom, so be sure to watch your cat around lilies! Lilies are the most dangerous plant to cats; the whole plant can cause kidney failure. Symptoms include: drooling, vomiting, loss of appetite, increased urination, followed by lack of urination after 1 to 2 days, and dehydration.
If you think your pet has ingested any of
these foods, please contact your veterinarian immediately! We want only what is best for your pet so monitor their diet carefully.
