The festival became a two-day event in 1964, now known as the National Basque Festival. The weekend festivities were scheduled around the 4th of July weekend, to celebrate with this great country and to thank them for accepting Basques and their heritage so freely. Traditions are an important part of the Basque heritage and the Elko Euzkaldunak Club is very proud of the National Basque Festival, an honor bestowed upon us by Governor Sawyer in 1964 in conjunction with the State of Nevada Bicentennial celebration. It is a tradition that we have upheld for 50 years and hope to carry it on for many more years to come. ELKO SEW VAC Summer 2017 will be alive with learning when kids hit the road to participate in Row by Row Experience’s brand new program, Row by Row Junior. It’s designed for kids ages 6 to 14. They travel along with an adult, collect free row patterns designed just for them to make, and learn to sew with family help. Row by Row Junior follows the same time schedule, June 21 through Labor Day. It has the same basic guidelines for registered brick and mortar quilt shops. Like adult Row by Row, children need to be present in the shop to get the free pattern handout, but anyone can buy a kit. Grandmothers can buy them as Christmas presents. Traveling family members can bring them home as gifts or souvenirs. Blue “I Made This!” ribbons will be awarded to the first five kids who return to a shop with something they’ve made using a Row by Row Junior pattern. We want to celebrate any sewing effort not just quilting. We’ll have red “I Made This” ribbons for our kids in Canada and the UK. www.rowbyrowexperience.com

Darcy Tate WILDLIFE ART SPECIALIST Elko County Art Club | 407 Railroad Street, Elko, NV 775-758-8170 | www.fineartamerica.com/profiles/darcy-tate
Hi, I'm Darcy Tate. I am a self taught artist who enjoys creating images reflecting the beauty of wildlife and the great outdoors. I spend countless hours every year watching, photographing, and enjoying my subjects in their natural habitat. Most of my research work features Northern Nevada. I have been drawing all of my life. My first drawings were in pencil then and pen and ink. I went on to drawing and painting in colored pencil. This medium is ideal for my fascination with detail. Colored pencil takes many hours and layers of color to develop the look that I try to achieve in
my pencil paintings. I recently started painting with acrylics. I also work with sculpture in polymer clays, paper mache, epoxy clays, and from time to time some wood sculpture. I have illustrated for an outdoor magazine and have also illustrated books such as Nevada Wildlife Record Book, Public Land Mulies, and Elk Hunting the West. Most of my art is commissioned for local wildlife charities and conservation groups. However, I do welcome commissions.

Crispy Baked Avocado Fries & Chipotle Dipping Sauce
Shrimp Boil Foil Packs Recipe & photo courtesy of www.lecremedelacrumb.com
Ingredients:
1 pound shrimp, peeled and de-veined • 2 ears of corn on the cob, husked • ½ pound andouille sausage or chorizo • 1 pound baby red potatoes • 3 T old bay seasoning OR any homemade seasonings •
salt and pepper, to taste •3 teaspoons minced garlic • j uice of ½ lemon, plus lemon wedges for serving •3 tablespoons, melted + ½ cup butter, divided •c hopped fresh parsley •
Preparation: Chop corn into thirds, then chop each third in half lengthwise. Chop potatoes into 2 inch pieces. Boil corn and potatoes for 10 mins. Drain and set aside. In a large bowl combine shrimp, sausage, corn, and potatoes. Stir together melted 3 T butter, Old Bay seasoning, garlic, juice from half a lemon, and salt and pepper to taste and pour over shrimp, sausage, and veggies. Stir to coat. Divide between four 12x12 inch sheets of aluminum foil. Fold edges of foil up around the food to create a closed packet. Cook on preheated grill over medium-high heat for 8-10 minutes on one side, then flip and cook another 5-6 minutes on the second side. Alternately, you can bake the packets at 400 degrees for 15-20 minutes until corn is tender and shrimp are pink and fully cooked. While packets are cooking, melt remaining butter in a medium sauce pan over medium-high heat. Once melted, continue to stir gently over medium heat for 3-4 minutes longer until color changes from pale yellow to a golden amber (but be careful not to burn it). Serve shrimp boil packs topped with chopped parsley, lemon wedges for squeezing, and browned butter for drizzling over the top or dipping.

Ingredients:
2 large avocados, sliced Juice of ½ lime (optional) • Salt & Pepper • ¼ cup flour • 1 egg, lightly beaten • 1 cup panko bread crumbs • 2 tablespoons oil • Chipotle dipping sauce • •
Preparation: Pre-heat oven to 400 Degrees F. Pour 1 tablespoon oil in sheet tray or baking dish; set aside. Squeeze fresh lime juice on avocado slices to preserve their color while baking (this step is optional). Season with salt, pepper. Dredge in flour then dip in egg and coat in panko breadcrumbs. Be sure the avocado slices are coated very well in the panko. Place in a single layer on the greased sheet pan. Drizzle with the remaining oil or spray with cooking spray. This will help the avocado slices crisp in the oven. Bake for 15 minutes or until the avocados are golden and crispy. If desired, more oil can be drizzle while they are baking for additional crispness. Serve with either chipotle dipping sauce, ranch, ketchup, or any of your favorite dips!

Recipe & photo courtesy of www.lecremedelacrumb.com
Ingredients:
Brownie Mix: • ½ cup butter • 2 cups semi sweet chocolate chips • ½ cup creamy peanut butter • 4 eggs • ½ cup sugar • ½ cup unsweetened cocoa powder • 1 tablespoon vanilla • scant ½ teaspoon salt
Drizzle: • ¼ cup semi sweet chocolate chips • ¼ cup creamy peanut butter
Preparation: Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Line an 8x8 inch pan with foil or parchment and grease with nonstick spray. Melt the butter, 2 cups chocolate chips, and ½ cup peanut butter in a microwave safe bowl at ½ power for 2 minutes. Stir until smooth (return to microwave for another 20 seconds at a time as needed until completely melted and smooth). Add chocolate mixture to a large mixing bowl. Add eggs, sugar, cocoa powder, vanilla, and salt and mix until smooth. Transfer mixture to prepared pan and bake for 30-40 minutes until set and an inserted toothpick comes out mostly clean. Allow to cool completely. Once brownies have cooled, melt remaining ¼ cup chocolate chips and ¼ cup peanut butter in a microwave safe bowl at ½ power for about 1 minute or until you can stir it smooth. Drizzle over cooled brownies. Place in the fridge for about 10 minutes for the drizzle to set. Cut into bars and serve.
Ingredients:
2¼ cups flour • 1½ teaspoons baking powder • ¾ teaspoon baking soda • ½ teaspoon salt • 2½ cups shredded zucchini • 3 large eggs • 1½ cups granulated sugar • ½ cup oil • ¼ cup butter, melted • 1½ teaspoons vanilla •
2 T fresh lemon juice 1½ teaspoons lemon zest •2 T poppyseeds • •
Glaze: •1 ounce cream cheese, softened •2 tablespoons butter, melted •½ teaspoon vanilla •1 teaspoon fresh lemon juice •3 cups powdered sugar •6 tablespoons milk, or as needed
Preparation: Preheat oven to 350 degrees and grease a 9x5 inch loaf pan and set aside. In a medium bowl whisk together flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt. In a large bowl combine zucchini, eggs, sugar, oil, melted butter, and vanilla and mix well. Stir in lemon juice, lemon zest, and poppyseeds.
Add dry ingredients to wet ingredients and mix until just combined. Pour batter into prepared loaf pan. Bake for 45-60 minutes until an inserted toothpick comes out clean ( a few crumbs are okay but no wet batter). Allow too cool on a wire cooling rack. While bread is cooling, prepare the glaze by creaming together cream cheese, butter, vanilla, and lemon juice. Add powdered sugar and mix til combined. Add milk 2 tablespoons at a time, mixing after each addition, until glaze is a pourable consistency. Drizzle glaze over bread. Slice and serve or store in airtight container up to 5 days. Makes one 9x5 inch loaf, about 8-10 slices. Drop a tiny bit of food coloring onto the icing then use a toothpick to swirl the food coloring to create an agate look. Sprinkle with white sanding sugar and more colorful sanding sugar, then decorate the cookie with rock candies. Let set completely before serving.

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS) in this area is celebrating a milestone this year. The Humboldt Stake was organized 75 years ago, in 1942. Geographical areas of the LDS Church (also known as Mormons) are divided into stakes, and stakes are divided into wards and smaller units called branches.

The first organized group of Mormons in northeastern Nevada was in the new town of Metropolis, as it was being developed in the desert, northwest of Wells. It was part of the North Weber Stake in Ogden, Utah. A ward was organized in Metropolis in 1912 as the new community began to grow. Church officials from Ogden would travel by train to visit the members in Nevada, not only in Metropolis, but Ruby Valley, Secret Valley, Starr Valley, Tabor Creek, and farther south in McGill, Ely, Lund, and Preston.
1942-2017 Branches were established in the bustling railroad towns of Montello in 1925 and Wells in 1926. Both were part of the North Weber Stake. Nearby Elko was part of the California Mission, headquartered in Los Angeles. That branch was organized in 1922 and members met in the Bradley Opera House, next to the Commercial Hotel. In 1923 a branch was established in Carlin and several years later Winnemucca. They were also part of the California Mission. Northeastern Nevada remained part of the North Weber Stake for 16 years, until the Nevada Stake, headquartered in Ely, was organized in 1926. It included Metropolis, Wells, Montello, and the towns in the Ely Area. Elko, Carlin and Winnemucca remained part of the California Mission. The members in Elko acquired a frame house on 7th and Idaho Streets, removed the interior walls, and met there for several years. In 1928, they sold it to a man who moved it to a different location and they immediately began work on a new redbrick church at the site. Members did most of the work and the Elko Free Press reported that it was the busiest place in town after 6:00 every evening. The building was completed in record time, less than five months, and was used by local members for many years. As the population of Metropolis dwindled, the branch there was discontinued in 1949 and they joined the Wells Ward. In 1937, Elko and Carlin became part of the Nevada Stake, headquartered in Ely, and in 1941 Winnemucca was added to the new Reno Stake. On May 31, 1942, the Humboldt Stake was organized with wards in Carlin, Elko, Metropolis, Wells, and Winnemucca and a branch in Montello. In the next few years, branches were established in Battle Mountain, Imlay, Lee, McDermitt, Owyhee, Rowland, and Ruby Valley. The red-brick church in Elko became too small and was sold in 1950 to the First Assembly of God. Meetings were held in the Elks Lodge and Burns Funeral Home until a new building was constructed on College Avenue. It was dedicated in 1952 and served for more than 30 years until it became too small. It was sold to the City of Elko and served as the police
station for nearly 35 years. The Humboldt Stake was in existence until 1974 when it was re-named the Elko Nevada Stake. It was split in 1981 and Winnemucca, Battle Mountain and wards to the west and north became the Winnemucca Stake. In 1995, the Elko Nevada Stake was divided into the current Elko Nevada East Stake and Elko Nevada West Stake. Eureka was organized as a branch of the Nevada Stake in 1936 and became part of the Elko Nevada Stake in 1983. Austin became a branch in 1963 and was transferred to the Fallon Stake in 1974. A ward was established in Spring Creek in 1985. Currently, there are seven wards in Elko, five in Spring Creek, and one in Meadow Valley, which serves members in Osino, Ryndon, and Elburz. There are three church buildings in Elko, two in Spring Creek, and one each in Carlin, Eureka, Owyhee, Ruby Valley, and Wells. The following men have served as Stake President during the years of the Church in northeastern Nevada; Rodney S. Williams, Harvey A. Dahl, Loyd Sorensen, Roscoe P. Eardley, Farnes G. Egbert, Duane A. Hoem, Kenneth G. Jones, Dr. Kurt G. Alleman, Lee M. Shumway, Paul M. Lewis, Dr. John P. Patton, Kendle Bowler, and Shawn K. Jones.
In commemoration of this 75-year milestone, a celebration is planned for Friday, July 21 at the Elko High School football field, and the community is invited to attend. The celebration, titled Heritage: More Precious than Gold, begins at 4:00 p.m. with games for the children and socializing. Food vendors will be on-site. The main program begins at 6:00 p.m., which is a theatrical-type production, with songs and dancing. The program follows the history of the Church in the area and the interactions between the church members and the community. Many local organizations and high school groups have been invited to participate, highlighting the diverse cultures we have in the area. The evening will culminate with a family dance, with songs from all eras and genres.

Along with the celebration, a book of history has been compiled and will be available for a $20 donation to the Humboldt Heritage Committee. More information about the celebration and book is available in the Facebook group “Northeastern NV LDS Church History.

Greater Short-horned Lizard
The Greater Short-horned Lizard or Mountain Shorthorned Lizard (Phrynosoma hernandesi) is often called the “horny toad because of its squat, flattened body and short, blunt snout but it is definitely a reptile. This lizard is a variable species with different geographic populations having differences in color, pattern and size which scientists currently divide into five subspecies. they rarely can survive in captivity because of their specialized diet of ants.

It ranges in size from 2 to 4 inches (not including the one inch tail). Females are typically larger than males. It has a flat body edged with one row of very short scales. The head is fringed with a row of short horns. Some of the back scales are also pointed. The belly scales are smooth. There are dark blotches on the side of the neck and the color varies from gray, yellowish, or reddish-brown.
Horned Lizards are sit and wait predators. Their main prey is ants with an occasional grasshopper or beetle. They often sit near nests or trails of ants. If they are sitting in soft sand they will often shake sand over their backs leaving only their head exposed to watch for ants. When a prey animal passes by the lizard snaps it up with a flick of its tongue and swallows it whole. They are most active during
mid-day and burrow into the ground or occupy rodent burrows at night. Even though appearing well armored they have many predators including hawks, snakes, other lizards, coyotes. Horned lizards will inflate their bodies up to twice their normal size until they look like spiny balloons. Their most effective ploy is to hold still. If forced to move it can only run a short distance, stopping unexpectedly and flattening its body on the ground where its coloration allows it to blend in with the soil. The most unique tactic is to squirt a stream of blood from the corner of their eyes. It is directed towards the predator’s eyes and mouth. It is rarely used against humans and seems to be mainly used against coyotes and dogs. They are often captured by children and adults and kept as pets. But they rarely can survive in captivity because of their specialized diet of ants. The greater short-horned lizard is found from semiarid plains to high elevations in the mountains. The soil in these habitats can be stony or rocky but usually has fine loose soil or sand present. It is more cold tolerant than other species of horned lizards and is able to reach higher elevations. It is not found in southern Nevada. - THE INS AND OUTS Contributed by Sue Bradford of Journeys Around the World
Have you dreamed of vacationing in a place where you didn’t have to pay for your dinner at a restaurant or where you could order a couple of tropical cocktails and then just walk away without starting a tab?

What if I told you places like this really exist, they are not a dream and they are just as amazing as they sound. They are the all-inclusive resort and you can find them located in Mexico, the Bahamas and the Caribbean. Just not in Hawaii, actually there is only 1 allinclusive resort in the entire United States and it’s in Florida). Here is some advice for you on picking the right one for you. BUDGET. Not all resorts are created equal, and depending on the amount of money you are willing to spend, your experience can and will vary. Be honest with yourself about how much you can afford to spend and know that you may not get all the amenities at the 3-star resort that you would get at the 5-star resort. FOOD OPTIONS. Food is always included at an all-inclusive resort, but the types of restaurants and the variety of food options can vary greatly. With some resorts you only get to eat at the buffet restaurants, but other resorts allow you unlimited dining at a la carte restaurants. Please know what you are getting before you go, so you are not disappointed in your dining options once you get there, especially if you are a foodie. TIPPING. Please be aware of the tipping policy at the particular resort that you choose. Some companies have strict no tipping policies in force, and the employees can actually be terminated if they accept one. If that’s the case, please don’t risk the employees job no matter how much you appreciate their hard work. Tell their supervisor or the general manager of the resort. That will benefit them more than a few extra bucks.
W W W. E V E R Y T H I N G E L K O . C O M
WATER SPORTS. Most all-inclusive resorts have non-motorized sports included on site. These are things like Hobie Cats, Paddle boards, water kayaks, etc. Many resorts charge extra for things like snorkeling, water skiing, scuba diving and so one. Make sure you know what’s included before you go, so you are prepared for an extra cost. EXCURSIONS/SPA/GOLF. These things are usually not included in your bill and will be charged to your room on resort. Remember this when you are thinking about your budget. You are going to want to do extra things off the resort, like a local tour or a round of golf, or splurge on a massage or even a romantic dinner on the beach. All of these things make your trip that much more memorable. ADVICE. Don’t be afraid to call me, your local travel agent for help if you need it. Did you know there are over 200 all-inclusive resorts in the Cancun/ Riviera Maya area alone? With so many all-inclusive resorts out there, it’s really tough to search through them all and make a good choice. That’s what I am here for, to help you make the best choice for you and your vacation. My services are free of charge and I pride myself on customer service. I hope to hear from you.

HOME RUN

Every year more baseball players etch their names into the history books. For most players they never see the opportunity where they’ll be given the chance to be remembered forever, whereas some players bask in the spotlight their whole career. On June 3, baseballs fans got the chance to see a future Hall-of-Famer reach an incredible feat that won’t soon be forgotten. Albert Pujols of the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim hit career home run number 600.
Obviously, 37-year-old Pujols is no stranger to the spotlight, 600 is a big number. Since his debut in 2001 for the St. Louis Cardinals, Pujols has been a force to be reckoned with while in the batters box. Pujols hit his first career home run on April 6, 2001 against the Arizona Diamondbacks, then they continued to come at a very fast pace. He became the youngest player to hit 250 home runs back in 2006, and then became
48

W W W. E V E R Y T H I N G E L K O . C O M
the youngest player to hit 400 home runs in 2010 through his first 10 big league seasons. He is the only player to hit at least 30 home runs in each of his first 12 seasons in the big leagues. In his first 11 seasons with the Cardinals, Pujols lead them to seven post-season appearances while winning two World Series Championships. He won three National League MVP awards and finished in the top
five for voting in seven other years. He is a nine time All-Star who has two Home Run titles and won the 2003-Batting Crown. Pujols has yet to win an award since moving to the Angels and has only two post-season appearances which both resulted in losses. Pujols hit his first 445 home runs in St. Louis, which looked like the prime of his career, and his next 155 in Anaheim over a five and a half year span where his numbers have began to fade from year-to-year. He hit at least 40 home runs in six seasons with the Cardinals, but has only achieved that once in his time with the Angels. Through his first 5 seasons with the Cardinals he hit 201 home runs compared to his 155 in his first 5 seasons with the Angels; only 46 home runs apart, showing that offensively he hasn’t fallen off yet. On June 3, Pujols became the fourth youngest player to hit 600 home runs joining a small group of nine players to reach this feat. In the bottom of the fourth inning with a two-run lead over the Minnesota Twins, Pujols came up to the box to face Ervin Santana with the bases loaded where he blasted a 1-2 pitch deep down the left field line to make history. Pujols became the first player to ever hit a grand slam on his 600th career home run and Santana is the most recent of the 386 pitchers to ever give up a home run to Pujols.
the baseball world. But Pujols’ 600th looks like everyone’s insignificant birthdays as it has come and gone so quickly without much recognition. The first half of his career seemed as if it never left fifth gear and throughout his 17-year career it seems as if he has only been slowing down since. Did the excitement surrounding Pujols stay in St. Louis? Joan Niesen, writer for Sports Illustrated, described it as this in her story on June, 5, “The Pujols who plays in Anaheim is a shadow of the player he was in St. Louis, which is why it is possible to view his career in these two disparate chunks. He went from superman to rarely super, from October regular to an October rarity. Maybe that’s why 600 felt so bittersweet, why it seemed like baseball wasn’t quite as excited as it should have been.” The hype wasn’t there following Pujols’ iconic hit based on the idea the baseball world predicted it would happen eventually, so it’s not like it was a big surprise. His first 11 seasons with the Cardinals were so incredible that of course he would make it here. But come on, Pujols is the Major’s active home run leader by a long shot with 600 home runs. The next closest to him are Miguel Cabrera of the Detroit Tigers with 451 home runs, Adrian Beltre of the Texas Rangers with 446, and Carlos Beltran of the Houston Astros with 429. The rest on the list are below 400 home runs.
Pujols now joins Barry Bonds, Hank Aaron, Babe Ruth, Alex Rodriguez, Willie Mays, Ken Griffey Jr., Jim Thome, and Sammy Sosa as the only players to ever hit 600 career home runs. He is the 7th most efficient on the list to do so. Average amount of at-bats between home runs in a career up to 600 home run mark: • Babe Ruth – 11.53 at-bats • Jim Thome – 13.61 at-bats • Barry Bonds – 13.68 at-bats • Sammy Sosa – 14.39 at-bats • Alex Rodriguez – 14.48 at-bats • Ken Griffey Jr. – 15.07 at-bats • Albert Pujols – 15.56 at-bats • Willie Mays – 15.85 at-bats • Hank Aaron – 16.68 at-bats Despite being the first player to reach 600 home runs since Jim Thome did in 2011, Pujols didn’t get the attention that the baseball world would have expected. Unlike Jeter’s 3,000 hit, or one of Arrieta’s no-hitters, or even Pujols’ 500th career homer, they all created so much noise in

ALBERT PUJOLS Niesen continued in her article on SI.com, “Only eight other men are in the 600 club, and half of them got there as their careers wound down. In fact, the next three players for Pujols to chase down – Ken Griffey Jr. (630), Sammy Sosa (609), and Jim Thome (612) – would all retire within two years of getting to that mark.” Except Pujols’ contract has him set to play through the 2021 season. That’s four more years to watch Pujols continue to make history. In his career he averages 35.29 home runs a season and has hit at least 30 home runs in three of his last six seasons. If he can hit at least 25 homers in each of his last four seasons, Pujols would join the very slim list of three players to hit 700 home runs joining Bonds, Ruth, and Aaron. If Pujols were to hit 700 home runs it would only put him 62 away from Bonds’ record. He would love to have his chance to become baseball’s all-time home run leader, and if he’s close to it following the 2021 season, he’ll likely keep going.
In an interview with USA Today Sports, Pujols said, “ God willing, I hope I get the opportunity [to chase Bonds’ record]. If I’m close, and I’ve played 20 something years already why not play one more to try to get it? It would be so special. I can’t even imagine it.” The excitement surrounding Pujols should still be intact. He has 2,876 hits passing Babe Ruth on the all-time hits list; he has 1,859 RBI and should join Aaron, Rodriguez, and Ruth as the only players in history with 600 homers, 3,000 hits, and 2,000 RBI. He already is the third player in history to have 600 homers and 600 doubles along side Aaron and Bonds. This season Pujols is currently has a batting average of .243 with nine home runs and has 43 RBI. He is in third place for most RBI in the American League (AL). The Angels are currently in second place in the AL West with a 31-32 record trailing the Houston Astros who are 43-18. Pujols’ next career goals are to reach 3,000 hits, 2,000 RBI, and win another World Series Championship.

Myths about microblading 1ST MYTH - Microblading is an easy technique especially for those with PMU experience. NO. Microblading is an extremely difficult technique, that requires a lot of practice and knowledge. Usually, it is easier to learn for complete beginners. Those with previous PMU experience are used to different methods, and may be heavy handed. In order to start working on clients, you will be required to practice on latex for at least one month. 2ND MYTH - Microblading treatment may damage the skin or even leave scars. NO. Microblading itself, may not damage the skin or leave scars. Lack of practice, and poor knowledge are the main causes. Microblading is not slicing, it is gentle skin scratching. PMU individuals consider this technique less traumatic compared to using a device. 3RD MYTH - Microblading is more painful. NO. The degree of discomfort during the treatment depends on several factors: anesthetics used, location of the treatment, clients pain tolerance, and the skill of the technician.
TESTIMONIAL 4TH MYTH - Microblading is only good for those who seek very natural results. NO. With microblading you may achieve various results while combining strokes and shadow methods.
I have been self-conscious of my eyebrows for as long as I can remember. I have tried everything to help make them look "normal", but I am not great with makeup so nothing seemed to help. My eyebrows were thin and patchy and not symmetrical. I first heard about Rose on FB. I started following her on Instagram and was immediately intrigued! Her before and after photos were fantastic! But I was still skeptical. I went in for a consultation and Rose immediately put me at ease and made me feel comfortable with the microblading process. I was sold!
Microblading Benefits: - The treatment is less painful and is done faster comparing with a machine - A very natural result is achieved - It does not look like a usual tattoo as hairs are “drawn” in natural direction - A machine is not used for this procedure - It is cheaper and easier to use a manual tool - Extremely thin disposable needles are used for this technique. That is why the “drawn” hairs are almost identical to natural ones - Deluxe Brows medical organic pigments are used for this technique. These pigments are certified, sterile and safe. While performed correctly they do not change color over time but slowly fade instead. - Correction is necessary to highlight the already existing result The results may be extremely natural and unnoticeable, more defined and bright or even similar to make up look, however it does not look like a tattoo. Eyebrow shape, color and intensity are selected according to the facial features and preferences of the customer. The results last for up to 2 years.
If your brows are thin or sparse and you want a very natural look, microblading is perfect. Each hair stroke is drawn on individually and creates a 3D look. If you prefer more of a full brow, shading can be done at the retouch session. There are many people in the industry who are not properly trained. I would encourage you to ask where the artist trained, if they have taken a Blood Bourne Pathogens Certification, have a Health Certificate and ask for pictures of their work.
After I got them done, it was an immediate confidence booster and was amazing how much better it made my face and eyes look! Every day I am excited to not have to put on make up or worry about my facial appearance because I know my eyebrows look great without me having to do a thing!

Each technique is selected for the customer individually. Technique selection depends primarily on the client’s needs, condition of natural eyebrows, their thickness and amount of hair. It is also important to know whether the pigmentation result is expected to be temporary ( up to 3-7 months) or permanent ( up to 2 years)

RENT IT OUT?
Sometimes, you decide exactly when you’d like to move. Other times, life swoops in and decides for you. Your company might transfer you, a family emergency might require relocation, or you might finally find the love of your life—three states over. Should you sell your house or hang on to it as a rental property? Here are 5 important considerations.
1. Are you gone for good? Or do you need an exit strategy? If there’s a good chance you’ll return to your current home in a year or two, the money and time you spend selling your home and then buying a new one might make renting it out a smarter option.
2. How’s the rental market? Look at online rental sites to see what properties in your neighborhood and in similar condition to yours are renting for. Are there a lot of listings? Think about what you might charge and what you might have to do to bring your property up to the market standard. You can then get an idea whether your potential rental income will cover your expenses.
3. Where’s the neighborhood heading? A lot of factors feed into property values, from national trends to long-term construction plans. An agent can help you understand your property’s potential for appreciation and whether or not it might pay to hang onto it.
4. How much is the hassle of being a landlord worth? Unless you pay for a property management company (about 10 percent of the rental income), dealing with issues, emergencies and uncooperative renters (sometimes all at once, often in the middle of the night) can be trying. Ask yourself if it’s worth the stress.
775-753-HOME
SHOULD YOU SELL YOUR HOME OR
5. What are the tax implications? Each situation is unique, so before you decide to rent out your home consider talking with a tax professional. They can help you figure out how much you can expect to pay in taxes on the rental income.

EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW
Contributed by Dr. Todd Wendell of Ruby Mountain Chiropractic Center
When is a pain in the neck more than just a pain in the neck? When is it a sign that something more serious may be involved?
Typically, neck pain is caused by a abnormal position of your neck and muscle strain. It’s common that one side of the neck may experience more pain than the other. But when neck pain is accompanied by other symptoms, it may be cause for concern. Here’s why: 1. Neck pain with vomiting and stiffness may indicate meningitis. If you cannot touch your chin to your chest and experience drowsiness, confusion and/or sensitivity to bright lights, call a medical professional right away. 2. Neck pain with weakness in the arms and tingling in the fingers may indicate a herniated disc, which is pressure on a nerve root due to a narrowing of the spinal cord canal. 3. Neck pain after a car accident is usually referred to as whiplash. When you’re in a car that is hit from behind, the neck tends to snap suddenly forward and then backward, causing what is known as cervical acceleration/deceleration (CAD) trauma or syndrome.
How Chiropractic Care Can Help Most people experience neck pain at some time in their lives. As your chiropractor, we’re skilled in determining whether you have a relatively minor issue, or whether you require a referral to another type of practitioner. After examining you thoroughly, we’ll aim to restore normal structure, feeling and function in your neck and other affected body parts, or make a referral to a practitioner who can help you. Continued care will help ensure that the muscles and joints in your neck and back remain in optimal working condition to keep you living life to your fullest potential without restriction.
Dealing with frequent neck pain? It may be worth a visit to our practice. Ruby Mountain Chiropractic | 775-777-3033

Principles
behind the ideal protein weight loss method The body has three sources of energy from which it draws to meet its metabolic needs. Carbohydrates, Muscle, and fat. Chronologically, the body will first draw on its carbohydrate reserve before turning to muscle and fat. During the weight loss phases of the protocol, we limit carbohydrate intake to encourge the body to turn to its fat and muscle components for energy. By eating high biological protein foods, the protocol helps to support muscle mass and teaches dieters how to develop smarter eating habits and lifestylke choices so they can maintain a stable weight after weight loss is achieved.

Our bodies all have the innate ability to heal themselves. What is Reiki and where does it come from? Reiki is an energy healing modality that originated in Japan through a Zen Buddhist monk named Mikao Usui who was studying allopathic medicine when he came upon texts about ancient healing forms. Through meditation and study he developed the healing modality, which is now called Reiki. Although Reiki can be spiritual in nature it is not a religion or a dogmatic belief system. A person does not have to belong or not belong to a specific religion or even hold spiritual beliefs to benefit from Reiki.

The Difference Between
Dry & Oily ACNE
Acne is one of the most common and difficult skin conditions that we treat as aestheticians. When you break out, those annoying blemishes are a combination of dead skin cells, oil and bacteria. Those with oily skin have excess oil on the surface, making it the perfect breeding ground for break outs and yet surprisingly even people with dry skin can get acne. So what is the difference between oily acne and dry acne and what is causing that to happen? Oily skin, as we know, is more susceptible to acne because of all of the excess oil that sits on top of the skin. Oil fuels the acne flame which means if you don’t use products that will help to reduce some of that excess oil, the acne will be very difficult to treat. Both salicylic acid and benzoyl peroxide are effective in the treatment of acne. Salicylic acid exfoliates and works like a mop to absorb excess oil and remove the dead skin cells that cover the break outs. This makes the extraction process much easier and more comfortable
for clients. It also has anti-bacterial properties which is essential to treating and controlling acne. Benzoyl Peroxide on the other hand works by forcing oxygen into the pores and killing that bacteria. Bacteria cannot survive in the presence of oxygen – therefore making benzoyl peroxide the perfect ingredient for killing that bacteria and reducing the break outs on the skin. But having dry skin and acne can be a very frustrating situation to deal with too. The main ingredients that are used to treat acne can be very drying for any client but especially for those who already struggle with dry skin. When the skin is dry, the barrier function is not working properly and allows for transepidermal water loss. This makes the skin even more dry and can allow bacteria to spread causing more break outs. It is important to rebalance the skin with the appropriate oils and lipids to ensure a healthy barrier especially for clients with dry skin.
Most of the time, clients actually create the problem by stripping their skin, which leads to dryness and an intact barrier. This can happen by simply overdoing it with your skin care routine. Having both a gentle cleanser as well as one that has active ingredients is important so you are not over drying the skin. Clients can also over exfoliate with the use of abrasive facial scrubs or even over using a facial brush like the Clarisonic. You really only need to be exfoliating the skin 2 to 3 times a week. When you exfoliate the naturally occurring lipids or oils on the skin are being taken off so when it’s overdone the face will over compensate and produce more oil. In short, acne is a frustrating skin condition to deal with whether you have dry or oily skin. Make sure that you are always using your recommended products and that you are using them regularly. You will get the best results with a routine and remember that less is more when you are using professional skin care products.

Carolyn "CC" Swafford CONTRIBUTED BY SHABONYA DUTTON OF STATE FARM, WRITTEN BY KELSIE CREAMER
From the moment that her small embrace enveloped me I knew that I had met someone very special. Carolyn “CC” Swafford is what I consider the definition of the saying “big things come in small packages.” As soon as she walked through the doors of my office she was making me feel like I was the one being honored. She has a way about her that makes a person feel at ease and special. From the way she immediately compliments you upon meeting you, to how she then gives you a big hug, and asks you about yourself. She is someone who truly understands how to make people open themselves up and then become comfortable sharing. This is what has made her successful in her time in Elko. “CC” came to Elko in January of 2001. She came here from Wichita, Kansas, after spending fifteen years on the pro bowling tour, in order to run a local bowling center. She left employment there in December of 2001 and started working for the Elko Daily Free Press where she stayed until 2005. She then went to KENV. It was through her work in these businesses that she started to become an active member of the Chamber. She was a member of the Chamber Board of Directors for eight years.

The list of organizations that “CC” has touched during her time in Elko is extensive. She has remained an avid bowler. She was very active within her church and was the secretary/ treasurer at Shiloh Bible Church for six years. Aside from being on the Board of the Chamber she was also a Board member of Bright Path from 2006 until the organization was dissolved in 2016. She has also been very active within both the Elko Lions and Kiwanis. “CC” is involved with so many activities in our community and they all seem to happen organically. She became a member of Kiwanis because she was leaving a Lions meeting one day, and was invited to attend the Kiwanis. When her son in law who has been active in Kiwanis for thirty-five years said to her, “Well, why didn’t you tell me you wanted to join Kiwanis?” “CC” simply replied, “You never asked me to.” We will sadly be losing “CC” from the Elko community at the end of June for several months. She will be going to Oklahoma to stay with her daughter for an extended vacation. She will leave behind a lasting legacy. One in particular is her co-creation with friend Joyce Mills of the Elko Senior Olympic Games that are held every July. This year the games are July 26-30th. For the last sixteen years “CC” has been the
" BIG things come in SMALL Packages "
MC for the opening and closing ceremonies of the games, as well as, coordinated the bowling events. Seniors must be fifty or older in order to participate in the games. There are over twenty different events to participate in. Everything from swimming, tennis, bicycling, weightlifting, and basketball to other nonphysically demanding activities like jeopardy, darts, brain games, and Wii bowling. Opening Ceremonies for the Senior Olympic Games is on Wednesday, July 26th at 6pm at The Terrace at Ruby View located at 1795 Ruby View Dr. Elko NV 89801. I know that ‘CC’s kind voice will be sadly missed this year. The impact that she has left on our community through the work that she has done to bring a rich active culture for our Senior community will be carried on for years to come. She has started traditions that can carry on. “CC” has also been a shining example of what being truly humble is and civic minded. She has been a good neighbor to all of us in Elko for the last sixteen years by serving in so many different ways. Thank you so much “CC”. We appreciate all that you have done for us and we wish you safe travels and a very great next chapter.
If you would like to nominate a Good Neighbor please email kayla.ozman. waav@statefarm.com or call Kayla Ozman at 775.738.3423.

Help Your NoiseAverse Dogs Through
Thunder & Fireworks Season Contributed by Dr. Tessa Sustacha
America Independence Day, or the 4th of July, is a great holiday. One that is full of patriotism, BBQs, parades and family gatherings. Even though it is fun for us, it can be a very stressful time for some of our pets. Millions of dogs are afraid of loud, sudden, unpredictable noises such as
thunder and fireworks. In a study done in the United Kingdom and published in Applied Animal Behavior Science in 2013, 49% of dog owners indicated that their dog responded fearfully to a
loud noise, including thunder, gunshots, and cars backfiring. All too often dogs affected by this condition also suffer from other anxiety disorders, particularly separation anxiety. Dogs suffering from other fear or anxiety disorders may be more likely to be “sensitive” to noises. Noise phobias can affect dogs of any age, breed, gender, or neutering status. Wild animals also react to thunderstorms fearfully. This is appropriate because storms can be dangerous, causing flash flooding, falling debris/trees and lighting that can cause fires. The problem is that modern pets are, for the most part shielded from the real dangers of storms, but they create dangers for themselves by their reactions to storms. Dogs can inherit noise aversion or may develop it after a traumatic experience involving a loud noise. 88

The behavioral signs of thunderstorm fear often may begin before the storm arrives. Some signs that you may see following reactions to loud noise are: • Trembling or shaking • Hiding • Following you closely/seeming clingy • Panting or drooling • Pacing or appearing restless • Whining or barking
• Cowering •A ppearing hyper vigilant (continuously looking around as if danger is nearby) •A ttempting to escape or chewing on furniture, walls, or crate This list is not meant to be exhaustive or definitive; a dog that displays one of these signs in response to a sound does not necessarily have a noise aversion. However, if your dog shows one or several of these signs in response to a noise, please seek help from your veterinarian. There are also many steps you can take to control exposure to loud noises or reduce their intensity to help your pet feel more comfortable. 1. Avoid triggers: Noise-averse dogs should not be brought to fireworks displays or forced outside during a storm in the hope that they’ll get used to these sounds. In fact, doing so will probably intensify their fears. 2. Modify or remove triggers: You could encourage your dog to stay in a sound-insulated area during thunderstorms, or you could install acoustic tiles in his or her safe spot. Play competing noise from the TV/radio and use white noise to muffle the loud noises. Shut blinds, shutters, and curtains during a storm or firework event or encourage your pet to rest in a windowless room. Consider teaching your dog (in a positive way) to wear earplugs or noise-canceling headphones, such as Mutt Muffs (safeandsoundpets. com).

3. Don’t use punishment: Don’t punish your dog physically or shout at her or him for reacting to a loud sound. This will only make your dog more anxious/ reactive and may even cause your dog to react aggressively to you. Punishment may also reinforce for your dog that there was something to be worried about in the first place. 4. Comfort the dog: Try to be home or have someone stay with your dog during a loud noise event. There is no evidence that proves comforting or ignoring your dog makes the situation worse or helps. It may help some dogs to hold them firmly and lean into them; only do this when your dog approaches you and you think he or she will benefit. Release your dog if he or she struggles. Long, firm massage strokes may also help.

5. Safe haven: Create a safe haven for your dog with your dog’s blanket, cushion, and one or two familiar toys. Feed your dog there or leave tidbits there frequently for her or him to find. Let your dog get use to this space before the fireworks and storm season. It can be a place that your dog is already accustomed to. If you think your dog will want to escape to that place during a loud noise event, then try to get her or him to go and settle there before the events start. Ideally, this would be an interior windowless room. 6. Medication: Your veterinarian may prescribe antianxiety medication to aid treatment and minimize your dog’s suffering. The goal of using medication is to reduce the intensity of your dog’s fear and anxiety. A new medication called SILEO came out last summer. This is the first and so far only FDA approved treatment for noise aversion in dogs. This is an at home treatment that can be use as needed. It is clinically proven to have calming effects without sedation, which allow the pet to still interact normally with the family. The website for this medication has good information on noise aversion. (http://www. sileodogus.com/) There is some evidence that dogs respond to pheromone devices, such as Adaptil or calming collars. Aromatherapy is sometimes recommended for storm phobias, although there is no good evidence that it is effective and essential oils can be toxic especially for cats.

Even though noise aversion presents a significant problem for many dogs and often gets worse without appropriate treatment, the good news is that many treatment options are available. While treatment will not cure your dog of noise aversion, it will help to improve her or his ability to cope and make storms and fireworks more manageable events in the future. Treatment is most effective when employed at the first sign of a problem. We would be happy to help if you are concerned about your pet this summer.
Elko Veterinary Clinic wishes everyone a safe and fun July.
