I’M A SIMPLE, VERY COMPLICATED PERSON “ I’ve never been satisfied. No sooner have I done one thing, I’m already boiling inside to do the next thing” Hedy Lamarr articles. Because red is a symbol of vitality, strength, courage, passion, determination... What better than getting off to a strong start in the new year! For the “gentlemen”, “endangered classics” and “romantics”, I remind you that, apart from loyalty, there’s no better Valentine’s Day gift than a special piece of jewellery to declare your love. You can easily find inspiration in ELM… Don’t forget! From the most sincere romanticism to the most fleeting passion, you deserve to celebrate Valentine’s Day with enthusiasm! Because it’s important to keep protecting our traditions... Let’s be generous! And I insist, let’s be generous because a person’s history is written through years of struggles, hard work, perseverance... Some people are fortunate enough to reap the benefits of their efforts. They’re rewarded for it, and have amassed large fortunes, yet have they had a “happy ending?”… Our article “Inheritances of great fortunes” will remind you of the importance of being generous in everyday life.

Life can be an intoxicating and intense perfume that lasts forever, or it can turn into a cascade of crushing disappointments for your self-esteem, where it’s easy to fall into a deep, vital labyrinth with no way out... Therefore, choose carefully the paths that will mark your destiny and that of your future heirs... any men and women will identify with the words of this beautiful actress who, apart from her great beauty, was a very intelligent woman, to whom we owe different inventions, one of which was a forerunner to today’s WiFi.
In Marbella we’re “complicated” enough to defend to the hilt the new projects that are being carried out in our city to promote and strengthen the infrastructure and to create great connections between the continents. We still have a long way to go in 2024! In this Valentine’s Day special, you’re going to enjoy a magazine where VALENTINE RED is the protagonist of several of our 24 EXCLUSIVE LIFE MAGAZINE
On the cover, a stunning Sharon Stone, one of the most beautiful women in the world and an acclaimed Hollywood star who stands out not only for these qualities, or for her high IQ. Recently she is also making her mark in the world of art thanks to her creativity as a painter. On the topic of the world of art, we have a big date in March, at the Arco Art Fair in Madrid and at the Salón de Arte Moderno (SAM Art Fair), where this year, for the first time, they’ve decided to invite the 11-year-old artist, Rafa B., to exhibit all his works in one of their halls, with EsArte gallery. In ELM you’ll find lots of articles that I hope you enjoy! Best wishes,

“GRATITUDE IS THE MAIN PART OF A BENEVOLENT MAN” “El agradecimiento es la parte principal de un hombre de bien.” Francisco de Quevedo
G
ratitude is a virtue. The discipline of gratitude is a conscious effort to acknowledge that everything I am and everything I receive is a gift of love, a gift to be celebrated with joy.
But gratitude, the act of being thankful for what others do for us, seems to be more and more forgotten over the years. Moral education is therefore a value that must be protected and nurtured, especially in our children. The future of society lies in their hands. That’s why I’d like to thank my friends, Ana and Rafa, for giving me the opportunity to be a part of their lives, and to work for one of the best magazines in Marbella, Exclusive Life Magazine.

At the age of 17, Sharon Stone entered a beauty pageant, and was a candidate for Miss Pennsylvania. One of the judges advised her to give up her career and go to New York to work in advertising. Two years later, after settling in New Jersey, she was hired by the prestigious Ford Agency and began her career as a model. But life had a twist in store for her, and she made her debut on the big screen soon after, thanks to a brief role in Woody Allen’s Stardust Memories. Despite this opportunity, she spent more than a decade playing minor roles before her career finally took off with her performance in the film Total Recall, starring Arnold Schwarzenegger. BASIC INSTINCT Her international success and projection to stardom came with her role in the film Basic Instinct, in which she played the enigmatic novelist Catherine Tramell. This role made her a Hollywood star, in a career ascent that culminated in an Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actress for Casino. Sharon Stone has always been associated with the Hollywood industry, and her popularity has never waned, even when she lowered her caché after the peak of her career and took parts in smaller films such as If These Walls Could Talk 2. The sequel, Basic Instinct 2: Risk Addiction, and her role as the villainess in Catwoman saw her relaunch her career and star in films that were both critically and commercially successful, such as Bobby. In recent years, the actress has also appeared on the small screen in series such as Ratched and The New Pope.

BEAUTY AND TALENT Perhaps it was her innate intelligence that helped Sharon Stone keep control of her career and not succumb to its ups and downs, unlike other Hollywood actors and actresses. Although it has not been a linear trajectory, it has been a steady one, and she has always enjoyed the acclaim of audiences who, beyond her beauty, have been able to appreciate her talent. Despite being considered at one stage the ultimate American sex symbol, her private life was never the subject of scandal. In 1984, Sharon married producer Michael Greenburg, from whom she separated two years later. In 1998, she married Phil Bronstein, with whom she adopted her son Roan Joseph. The marriage lasted only three years, but ended amicably, with shared custody of the child. Sharon adopted her other two sons, Laird Vonne and Quinn Kelly, on her own.

In 2001, the actress overcame a brain haemorrhage that ultimately left her with no permanent damage. But the experience changed her life. She has a ranch in New Zealand, where she spends long periods away from the Hollywood glitz and glam, and in converting to Tibetan Buddhism, she has found the peace she was seeking away from the big screen. In recent years, Sharon Stone has taken part in numerous activities in favour of world peace, using her image to support initiatives such as AIDS research, building schools in Africa and caring for the homeless, among other causes. Sharon Stone recently presented an exhibition of her news paintings – Colorful Abstractions that reflect her inner world “Welcome to my Garden” at Allouche Gallery (Los Angeles), demonstrating once again her great artistic skills and her multifaceted ability to stand out in new projects. Those who know her say that Sharon Stone is beautiful on the outside, but even more beautiful on the inside, and that she has always understood that she is a person over and above being an actress. A philosophy that allows her to walk any red carpet with confidence.

is home is a testament to his refined taste: noble materials and a palette of earth tones and greys create the perfect setting where iconic pieces of 20th century design live side by side with contemporary works by established artists such as Sean Scully and Randy Cooper. Designed down to the last detail, no element is left to chance. Art Decor, his favourite style, is present in lamps, console tables and sculptures sourced from antique dealers in different parts of the world. They strike the perfect balance with pieces designed by Rodolfo A. Jacobson himself. All these elements, like different instruments playing in unison under the baton of a brilliant orchestra conductor, create a unique melody, a welcoming home, a space to be lived in.
His house is undoubtedly a reflection of his personality and hobbies: photography, music, painting, as well as a hint of the dreamer he was as a child; replicas of the toys and old model cars he has kept; they all have their place here, put together in a serene and balanced way.

Kazuyo Sejima was born in 1956 in Ibaraki, Japan. The daughter of a housewife and an industrial engineer, Kazuyo’s parents wanted her to follow her own professional path with total freedom, without restrictions or ties of any kind.
Sejima knew she wanted to be an architect from the first day she came across a magazine her parents had bought in search of inspiration for their family home. The magazine featured a photograph of Kiyonori Kikutake’s Sky House, the volumes of which made such an impression on her that she immediately knew she wanted to pursue a career in architecture. The sketches of houses that Sejima had done when she was eight years old gave way to the projects she had to do at university. It was during her student years that the architect discovered that the house was only a starting point for the design of the ensemble, at a time when men were in the majority in the classroom, and it was not yet conceivable that a female architect could manage her professional career on a large scale.
60 EXCLUSIVE LIFE MAGAZINE

ELM ARCHITECTURE
A LOVER OF BEAUTY Sejima’s first professional experience was as an intern with architect Toyo Ito, with whom she worked until 1987, when she set up her own studio: Kazuyo Sejima & Associates. Five years later, she was named Young Japanese Architect of the Year by the Japan Institute of Architects, which encouraged her to found the Tokyo-based joint practice Sejima and Nishizawa and Associates, SANAA, with her collaborator Ryue Nishizawa in 1995. This was the origin of an architectural practice oriented towards large international projects, although without ever losing sight of smaller projects. “What I’d never do is stop designing houses to only design large buildings, because every time you build a house, you measure yourself. All the houses I’ve built illustrate my architectural biography, my evolution as an architect,” she stated in an interview. Despite having won more than 15 international awards, including the 2010 Pritzker Architecture Prize, Sejima still considers herself a simple person, a lover of beauty. “I’m a person who needs flowers and trees around me. That’s why I have a small garden with four trees: a lemon tree, an apple tree, a blueberry tree and a Chinese orange tree, all within three metres of each other,” she says. As for her taste for beauty, the architect says: “I like to shop. Sometimes I make outfits that I’ll never wear, but I buy clothes to look at them. I take them out of the wardrobe and just look at them”. WORKS WITH SOUL The SANAA architectural studio has left a legacy of projects that are recognised all over the world. From the extension to the Valencian Institute of Modern Art in Valencia, to the Christian Dior building in Tokyo, the Kanazawa Museum of Contemporary Art, the new Museum of Contemporary Art in New York, and the Rolex Learning Centre in Lausanne, Switzerland, among others. A tireless worker, Kazuyo Sejima’s work has transcended borders to become part of the urban landscape of various countries, in turn inspiring younger architects. She is a member of the Rolex Mentor and Protégé Arts Initiative, a programme that connects great artists with young talent, in an experience of mutual learning and professional collaboration. Always in search of space through ethereal forms, Sejima experiments with boundaries and materials. Her architecture aims to find the common denominator between the material and the abstract, because she understands design as a continuous process of discovery. And this may well be what gives her work its soul.

INHERITANCES OF GREAT FORTUNES WITH A... HAPPY ENDING? Herencias de grandes fortunas con final… ¿feliz?
S
ome of the biggest fortunes in the world belong to those who run the large international cosmetics and fashion companies. They may have vast sums of money, but their stories are not always a bed of roses.
When great fortunes are involved, this gives rise to intrigue, jealousy, inheritance agreements, and sometimes wills that are almost inexplicable. These are the family stories that inspire Netflix series, make the front pages of newspapers, and get everyone talking. And they don’t always have happy endings.
helped grow and internationalise the firm with new brands. Then came the third generation, William, Aerin and Jane, who modernised the company and took an active role in running it. With several members of the Lauder family at the helm, the legacy of the cosmetics empire has always been in the air, hovering like a ghost over the lavish annual shareholders’ meetings, held each year at Essex House, overlooking New York’s Central Park.
ESTÉE LAUDER, AN EMPIRE TO BE DIVIDED UP The story of Estée Lauder begins with the marriage of Estée and her husband Joseph in 1930. Five years later, they founded their cosmetics company, but it was the ambitious, visionary nature of the woman who was always ahead of her time that drove it forward.
These imposing meetings have often been compared to those in the series Succession, especially given the fickle nature of some of the family members. Recently, William Lauder, one of the founder’s grandsons, bought a magnificent fourstorey mansion in Palm Beach for more than $10 million, only to later demolish it because he was unimpressed by its architecture and impersonal decor.
Nine years on, the company was faltering with the couple’s divorce, only to be revived when they remarried in 1942. Years after their deaths, it was their sons, Leonard and Ronald, who
Who will inherit the family business? Time will tell, but there are frequent rumours that there is already animosity between different members of the family.

L’ORÉAL, LA GUERRA SUCESORIA QUE INSPIRÓ A L’ORÉAL, THE BATTLE FOR SUCCESSION THAT INSPIRED NETFLIX The French company, L’Oréal, founded in 1909 by the chemist Eugène Schueller, is the world’s largest cosmetics company. An empire that years later has made Eugène’s granddaughter and its largest shareholder, Françoise Bettencourt Meyers, the richest woman in the world. But Françoise’s story is not a happy one. In 2010, a scandal erupted when she applied to have her mother, 88-year-old businesswoman and philanthropist, Liliane Bettencourt, declared incapacitated, on the grounds that her entourage was taking advantage of her delicate condition and encouraging her to squander her fortune. To document this, she handed over 21 hours of conversations secretly recorded by Liliane’s butler. Liliane had been having an affair for years with Jean-Françoise Banier, a photographer 25 years her junior. A relationship that led her to sign millions of dollars in bank transfers and cheques in his name, give him lavish gifts, including paintings by Picasso and Matisse, and take out life insurance policies in his name. A year later, the court ruled in favour of the daughter, who came out as the owner of the fortune, and yet she severed all ties with her mother. The story, full of luxury, money and intrigue, inspired Netflix to make the miniseries “The Bettencourt Case: the scandal of the richest woman in the world”.

HERMÈS, THE ENTIRE FORTUNE FOR THE GARDENER In 1837, French entrepreneur Thierry Hermès founded the company that bears his name, and which at the time made harnesses and saddles for the European aristocracy. Two centuries later, the firm is still going strong, and has become one of the most luxurious in the fashion world.

Puech’s gardener cannot inherit, as the adoption of an adult is legal in Switzerland, albeit unusual. It is unknown why the Hermès heir has had this change of heart regarding his inheritance. For his part, the gardener who is to become a multi-millionaire remains silent. It is estimated that he could receive around 40 million euros a year in dividends alone.
The current heir is Nicolas Puech, the fifth generation of the family. Aged 80, single and childless, he stepped down from the company’s board in 2014, but still holds 5.7% of the shares, giving him an estimated fortune of over €10 billion. The scandal arose when he announced his intention to break the inheritance agreement he had with The Isocrates Foundation, which was to inherit his entire fortune. Puech’s new wish is that his money should go to his gardener, a 51-year-old man from a modest Moroccan family, married to a Spanish woman with whom he has two children, and who remains anonymous. To avoid any issues with him receiving the inheritance, he plans to adopt him as his son. The Isocrates Foundation has been greatly affected by the sudden and unilateral annulment of an inheritance agreement, which it considers null and void, while regretting that the Foundation’s activities are threatened by circumstances beyond its control. It is not clear, however, that

Throughout his life, Lagerfeld was known for his elite taste and eccentricities, so it was no surprise that when he died at the age of 85, he left an estate of around €800 million to be divided among eight beneficiaries.
One was his muse and close friend, Baptiste Giabiconi. Others were his godson, Hudson Kroenig and his father, former model Brad Kroenig. Also named as beneficiaries were his bodyguard, Sébastien Jondeau, and Caroline Lebar, his publicist and communications director for over 30 years. British model, Jake Davis, was the sixth recipient. And his friend, Princess Caroline of Monaco, was the seventh. But the surprise came with the eighth heir: his cat, Choupette, who was left in the care of the couturier’s housekeeper, Françoise Caçot, who will manage the money on its behalf. The inheritance has not yet come into effect, and it is not known how the pet’s new owner will spend the fortune intended to make the animal happy.

Me costó convencerla.

That was my father’s Marbella, not mine now, where good taste has gone out of fashion. That’s why I want to be like Lomana.” You’re the only person who’s managed to get Ira von Fürstenberg to get in front of a camera, with you posing as a beggar... “It’s a sign of the times. The most elegant woman in Europe appearing in this promotional video giving me five euros has its merit,” he laughs. “I had a hard time convincing her. But in the end I got her to do something that was so much fun, it even amused her. Her life’s pretty hectic now, as she spends her days travelling between Rome, London and Madrid, and her summers at the finca in Ronda. It was on one of these getaways that I “nabbed” her for the promotion of my album “La Lomana”.”
How did you come up with the song “I want to be famous like Lomana”? I see you’d even like to be a columnist for La Razón... “Yes, with an imperfect pedigree. When I was writing my last album, Carmen came to me one day and asked me, sarcastically: “Why do you want to be as famous as Lomana?” I replied: “That’s a very good line, I’m going to keep it. I kept it, and little by little I gave it shape and composed a song. What I want to say with the song is that nobody knows why Carmen Lomana is famous. Nobody understands this phenomenon, which is a case similar to the Kardashians.” What does she say about the song? She ends up throwing a glass of water over you in the video... “She loved the video and thought it was funny, but the bit about her not doing “anything at all”... She didn’t like that so much. The video ends with her saying to me “You have no shame”.” Your facet as a singer looks promising. You’ve already signed up with Sony in Germany... “Yes, with Sony in Germany, but here in Spain, I want to do everything with Universal, with Narcis Rebollo, Eugenia Martínez Irujo’s husband. We have a lot of fun together. The performance of “La Lomana” will be on Friday 22nd September at “Los Premios Escaparate” in Seville. Carmen will also be there, and we’re going to cause a stir.” And a result of all this falseness are the “questionable princes” who now roam Marbella. “Back in my father’s time, there were also phoney celebrities, people who would go to the Marbella Club, and you didn’t know whether they’d just robbed the Bank of England, or were actually wealthy. It gave the place an extra touch of “charm”. Moths are always attracted to a flame… But now, with Google, they’re more easily exposed.” Very little remains of those times - your godfather Count Rudy, Marie Louise of Prussia, and her great friend Gunilla... “Yes, my dear Rudy, who always looks after me, whether I go to mass or not. He still loves life so much that he’s an example to us all. Things were different back in his time, because everything was a fusion of concepts, but the time has come for the past and future to mix. There has to be a present in Marbella Club. There should not only be photos of Gina Lollobrigida, but also new ones of a Valeria Maza or a Brigitte Nielsen. I was three years old when I first came to Marbella Club. My father bought it for 150,000 pesetas, a lot’s happened since then.” You left Marbella to continue to grow, but now you come back regularly… “I left Marbella for Austin because the school sent me. Marbella wasn’t an easy place to grow up in. I know people who got stuck in a rut growing up here. It was more rewarding to grow up in a place with more incentives than Marbella.” Are you more Hohenlohe or Fürstenberg? “I like to think I’m a mixture of both. But I believe I’m more Hohenlohe. I’m more bohemian, I’ve inherited a lot of my father’s spirit. Forty years later, it’s a different way of looking at things. I have my own identity, but I am very Hohenlohe. Your father didn’t want a city where any building was taller than a tree. “And you can see the attention they paid to his legacy! When you mentioned Marbella in the past, it was a special essence. But now it’s more like Miami than Saint Tropez. It started out in one direction, but then went downhill. We were like Portofino at first, where you’ll never see a skyscraper for sure.... If Marbella had been a bit better protected, it’d be different now. Now there are more Ryanair flights than private jets. Good taste costs less than bad taste. Good taste is cheaper. But good taste can’t be taught.” With your mother as a model in the mirrors, you were the creator of the modern selfie... “I was already taking pictures of myself back in 2001.” Laughing, he says, “Yes, I invented the trend. I became my own paparazzi, and my family’s. Today it’s lost all its meaning, because people have started to take photos of themselves with their mobile phones, a process that’s invaded our lives, and we’re actually like brands. How many followers have you got?”.
A TRIBUTE TO PRINCE ALFONSO Being the son of two emblematic figures of the international jet set, Alfonso von Hohenlohe and Ira von Fürstenberg, is character-building. Hubertus always claims rightful recognition for his father, a space in Marbella as an overdue tribute, in the city that became a benchmark in Europe thanks to him: “No one understands how my father still doesn’t have an artistic profile in the city. I proposed a great idea to the mayoress to honour him. I have an artist friend, the one who did the graffiti of Maradona in Naples and is going to do one of Severiano Ballesteros in Santander, to do one of my father at the roundabout where his avenue is. It’s a cool thing, not corny, something creative that hopefully will come to be”. Hubertus says he’s happy sharing his life here with his family and watches in wonder how they’re growing up. Marbella’s become an important place for them. “It was a flat tyre that brought my family to the south,” he laughs, “My grandfather Max’s Rolls Royce had a flat tyre when he was driving to Seville with my father Alfonso de Hohenlohe, so they took a detour to Marbella. My grandfather fell in love with the town, and in 1946 they bought a finca for 120,000 pesetas, where they built Santa Margarita, the foundation of today’s Marbella Club.” He’s been with Simona Gandolfi, his eternal soul mate, for over twenty years. Hubertus is well aware that Marbella has gone through many different phases. He was the architect behind the chicest parties of the summer, “The Legendary Party” with the glamour of the new generations of Marbella’s jet-set. He was organising them along with entrepreneur Julián Porras-Figueroa, but since the pandemic, they haven’t been repeated. “They reformed the Marbella Club and created a more classic concept. It’s not the place for this kind of event. Would my father like this new concept of the Marbella Club? Well, I don’t know, because it’s all very formal. I liked the more casual atmosphere it had before”. The nine-year-old aristocrat saw how La Margarita, the estate his father had bought on the Costa del Sol, took on a life of its own and became a landmark for the city. A new concept of city that the aristocrat wants to recover, so that the history of Marbella’s glitz and glamour that conquered Europe is not lost.

THE SUPREME COURT CONFIRMS THE POSSIBILITY OF PROHIBITING TOURIST RENTALS IF SUCH PROHIBITION IS EXPLICITLY STATED IN THE COMMUNITY OF OWNERS’ BY LAWS By: SANTIAGO DE LA CRUZ

W
e recently discussed in a prior article in this magazine how the Horizontal Property Law established the possibility of “limiting and conditioning” the use of dwellings for tourist purposes. This raised the question of whether homeowners’ associations are permitted to “prohibit” such tourist use. In that discussion, we highlighted that, to prohibit a tourist rental in our community of owners, we should consider: • Including a general limitation on the use of flats for tourist rental in the bylaws. • If not included, the Owners’ Meeting should adopt a resolution on the prohibition of tourist flats. Therefore, if the community wished to prohibit the rental of tourist flats in the building, it had to convene an Owners’ Meeting, expressly including on the agenda the resolution to prohibit the use of the property as a tourist apartment. • If the prohibition resolution were approved, a certificate of the resolution would need to be issued to inform future purchasers of flats in the building about this limitation. We concluded that, nonetheless, making categorical statements about whether tourist rentals can or cannot be prohibited at the community of owners’ level is fraught with risk, given the lack of uniformity in rulings from different Provincial Courts. Now, we can assert that the prohibition of tourist rentals at the community of owners’ level is possible. The Supreme Court has affirmed this possibility, provided it is explicitly stated in the bylaws of homeowners’ associations. In two decisive rulings at the end of November 2023, the Supreme Court ruled in favor of the prohibition in two separate cases in Oviedo (November 27) and San Sebastian (November 29), respectively. The Supreme Court emphasized in both cases that it does not attempt to analyze the regulation of the Horizontal Property Law (LPH), which states that a resolution limiting or conditioning the exercise of this activity will require the favorable vote of three fifths of the total number of owners. The question of whether the LPH allows prohibiting or only limiting the activity remains pending resolution. This
is particularly relevant given the existing discrepancy between different Provincial Courts in Spain regarding the interpretation of said article.” In summary, the Supreme Court states: 1 “ The prevalence of the right of ownership in the exercise of any activity in a property under the horizontal property regime over the right of the community of owners to establish any form of limitation or prohibition to its exercise.” 2 “ The right to private property constitutes a constitutionally recognized right... with no other limitations than those established by law or convention, which, in any case, must be interpreted restrictively.” 3 However, and significantly, the Supreme Court “authorizes the limitation or prohibition in general of the exercise of a certain activity in private property under the horizontal property regime” because “in the field of horizontal property, it is possible to establish limitations or prohibitions that generally serve the community’s best interests. These prohibitions, which pertain to specific activities or changes in property use, must be expressly stated, and for effectiveness against third parties, they must be registered in the Land Registry.” This assertion holds the status of judicial doctrine. Both judgments analyze the extent of restrictive clauses aiming to prevent the operation of tourist flats, as well as whether such activities constitute an economic activity. The Court concludes, in both cases, that there is no doubt that the conditions of an economic activity are met in the rental of dwellings offered or marketed as accommodation for tourist or holiday purposes. These dwellings are temporarily provided by the owner, operator, or manager, either directly or indirectly, to third parties on a repeated or habitual basis and in exchange for financial consideration, constituting the operation of tourist flats. In essence, the Supreme Court has taken a stance and entrusted the decision to the communities of developers initially (as they usually draft the community bylaws for the buildings they develop) and subsequently to the community members/owners. This allows them to decide whether or not to prohibit this type of lease. Whether viewed as good news or bad news depends on one’s perspective.

s for the artist, this is not the first time he has presented his work to the public, but it is perhaps the first occasion on which he has done so before an audience that is as specialised as it
is diversified. The participation of the very young painter Rafa B. in this unavoidable appointment with lovers and specialists of modern art manages to launch his figure through a bet as innovative as it is infallible by introducing him in a market in which he rubs shoulders with those established painters whom he reinterprets. His gallery owner, Marifé Núñez, makes a risky and innovative bet in which she proposes a validation of art that opens the

way from the revision, the updating and the reinterpretation that Rafa B. makes of consecrated masters such as Picasso, Velázquez, El Greco or Munch. Rafa B.’s work is complex, serious, committed and brave, as the result of his pictorial work combines virtuosity, the unprejudiced vision of childhood with the unavoidable contingency of using and rethinking an imaginary that already exists in the retinas of all spectators. His plastic proposals provide freshness through the use of the iconography he employs, the radiant colours - even fluorine and the risky compositions. In his work, one can appreciate the enjoyment of someone who has the opportunity to revisit a masterpiece without fear, contributing visual elements that bring him closer to our times, bringing us closer to the static, symbolic, recognisable figures that he reinterprets. With regard to his career, despite his young age, he has been professionally active in art since 2019 when he won the first Children’s Drawing Competition of the College of Architects of Malaga. Since then, he has participated in group and solo exhibitions in Spanish and international institutions and private spaces.

W
e talk to the charismatic international marketer about travel, teaching, being a leader, and her extraordinary, awardwinning year at ‘Spain’s Best Resort.’
Who is Cristina Borges... and what is your background? Travel is the perfect metaphor for my approach to life. I’m an avid explorer, embracing opportunities to live and work in different cultures. I love languages, connecting with people, and feeling immersed in local traditions, cherishing the friendships and memories I make along the way. This is my greatest inspiration, driving my passion for luxury hospitality, helping me shape new and extraordinary experiences for guests. Born in Mozambique, my life has taken me across the world, living in places as diverse as Lisbon, Dubai, Kuwait City and Abu Dhabi. My career has included international corporations like Microsoft, and Renault Nissan Group, as well as global hospitality brands including Quinta do Lago, and Minor hotels. How did you come to be Marketing Director at Puente Romano & Nobu Hotel? My last position was the perfect preparation, as I was the PR and Communications Director for Europe, North Africa and Latin America at Anantara Hotels, Resorts and Spas, responsible for the group’s communication during its strategic international expansion. It feels as if each step in my life has been leading me here, equipping me to mentor and inspire a team as we craft an extraordinary narrative in this new chapter in the story of Puente Romano Beach Resort. What challenges do you face on a daily basis? My sense of humour always gets me through the day! And I think my enthusiasm is contagious. As a mother, a wife, a mentor, and a business woman, I live intensely, but I make each moment count, and I relish the journey. I suppose my secret is to focus, and to balance the meaningful priorities in my life. Recently I returned to teaching, this time at Les Roches, where I mentor two Masters programmes. It’s so inspiring, as I am surrounded by the enthusiasm and creativity of these young professionals! What recommendations would you make to someone who wants to go into this profession? Earlier this year, I was in conversation with Nobu Matsuhisa, during his visit to our Nobu Hotel, and he perfectly captured the secret to great hospitality, saying “Never give up, work hard
and from the heart.” For me, that’s it! This isn’t work, it’s a way of life, and I believe that through creativity and empathy, you can really create dreams for guests. What kind of team do you have to carry out all the work you do? Hospitality is an immersive way of life, so my team and my colleagues are hugely important. I love my role of nurturing and leading my multicultural marketing team at Puente Romano Beach Resort. Not only do I see the results in the experiences we create for guests, but I see each team member flourish, mature, and gain confidence. It feels part of my professional legacy - and we also have a lot of laughs along the way! What good news can you give us regarding Puente Romano Beach Resort? It’s been an incredible year! We are over the moon to have been voted the ‘Best Resort in Spain’, in the prestigious Condé Nast Traveler Awards 2023. We are also so very grateful to have just been voted ‘Europe’s Best Resort Spa’, as well as ‘Spain’s Best Resort Spa’ in World Spa Awards. Throughout this year we have also collaborated with exceptional brands like Tiffany & Co., Aston Martin, Bentley Motors, Dior, Fendi and Maison Ruinart creating unique guest experiences which have attracted interest from across the globe. What would you say to people who haven’t been to Puente Romano & Nobu Hotel to encourage them to get to know it? Puente Romano Beach Resort has emerged as an international benchmark, a cosmopolitan hub for renowned brands in dining, retail, and wellbeing - there’s really nowhere like it in the Mediterranean! We have two hotels, offering guests either the sublime suites and one-of-a-kind villas of Puente Romano, or the modern cool luxury of Nobu Hotel Marbella. Yet guests are not just choosing a room – they are being immersed in unforgettable experiences. Whatever the season, whatever the time of day, there are endless possibilities. It’s exhilarating and motivating to be part of this, to give each guest the time of their lives. We have award-winning Six Senses wellness, a renowned tennis club, and for younger guests, our La Casita Club. While our unforgettable destination dining includes Nobu, COYA and Cipriani, we also curate sensational entertainment and exciting nightlife. And there is so much more coming, this is just the beginning! A sentence with which you’d like to bring this interview to a close? “Wherever my travels may lead, paradise is where I am.” Voltaire

LUCA TATTOO TATUADOR PROFESIONAL EN LUCATATTOOMARBELLA B Y R A FA E L B A R R I O - D I R E C TO R O F E L M
C

he aromatic Mediterranean scents of rosemary and lavender filled the evening air as we climbed the hillside to a historic fortress overlooking the island’s picture-perfect old town. The warmth of the setting sun ignited the sky, while deep ochre tones reflected off the Venetian gothic architecture and the brilliant white hulls of the superyachts moored in the harbour. We are visiting glamorous Hvar, one of the sophisticated islands along Croatia’s stunning Dalmatian coast. This is just one of the extraordinary pleasures of holidaying on a yacht. ISLAND HOPPING Cruising the calm waters of Croatia aboard a superyacht means privileged access to some of the Mediterranean’s most magical places. We started from the mediaeval city of Split, with its alluring ‘Game of Thrones’ vibe, and sailed on to unspoilt Adriatic destinations like the island of Brac, with its iconic Golden Horn beach, and sleepy Vis, once unreachable for decades. Sheltered by more than a thousand islands, this is one of the most desirable areas in the world for the A-list superyacht sailing crowd. Yet access to this exclusive world of travel is now within reach, thanks to Goolets, a boutique yacht charter company that specialises in creating personalised and tailored experiences aboard ultra-luxury yachts. Their fleet and itineraries are ideally suited to multigenerational family holidays, special occasion escapades and small group travel. SUPERYACHT CRISTAL Our home for the week has been DS Yacht Cristal, a 15-cabin vessel with a spectacular sun deck, spa pool, outdoor gym and all the luxury trimmings you’d expect aboard an exclusive yacht. For the 2024 season there’s a plush new principal cabin and even a cinema room. An experienced crew of 11 pamper up to 30 guests, with gastronomic dining, cocktails and also a wealth of water toys to enjoy in the Mediterranean sunshine, including kayaks, a SeaBob, paddle boards, an electric hydrofoil, and adrenalin-inducing jet skis.

Ava Gardner was born in 1922 in a small town in North Carolina, USA, into a family of modest means. At the age of 18, having grown up to be a beautiful brunette with green eyes, her life was about to change, thanks to a visit to her sister Beatrice, who lived in New York. Her husband took some photographs of Ava and hung them in the window of his photography shop on Fifth Avenue. A talent scout from the Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer studios, captivated by the young woman’s beauty, persuaded her to sign a seven-year contract with the company. Ava moved to Hollywood, where she was given acting lessons and speech training in preparation for the big screen. Gardner married twice between 1942 and 1945. The first time, to the popular actor Mickey Rooney, and the second, to the musician Artie Shaw. After her divorces, she was to meet the love of her life, the singer Frank Sinatra.

GARDNER AND SINATRA Gardner and Sinatra had one of the most passionate relationships in the history of Hollywood. They pledged their eternal love in a dream wedding in 1951. But their story had begun long before that, in the 1940s when they met and he fell in love with her. “I’m gonna marry that girl.”, he told his closest friends. And time would prove him right. Although at first the actress wanted nothing to do with the love Sinatra professed for her, she eventually fell for him when they met at a party in Palm Springs. “We drank, we laughed, we talked, and we fell in love,” Ava told reporters. They had a lot in common. They came from humble backgrounds, both had struggled financially before finding success, and they shared an unwavering spirit of self-improvement. They were like two soul mates who had finally found each other. Two erupting volcanoes, eager to burn in each other’s fire.

A LOVE THAT COULD NOT BE FORGOTTEN When their romance was made public in the magazines, the couple had to face the scandal caused by their relationship, as Sinatra was still a married man. But he divorced his wife and his courtship of Ava Gardner continued with all the intensity of a love affair in a movie. However, jealousy took its toll on the couple, and in 1953 their separation was announced. Nevertheless, neither of them was able to forget the other. Gardner took refuge in her work, and Sinatra in alcohol. The actress moved to Spain after the success of films such as The Barefoot Contessa, The Snows of Kilimanjaro, and Mogambo. And although both had other partners after their divorce, no passion could come close to the intensity with which they had lived the few years of their marriage. They simply knew that their love for each other had no expiry date. They started to follow their respective careers from afar, and soon began to call each other daily. Every evening at eight o’clock on the dot, Ava would wait for Frank’s call. It was impossible to cut the ties that had always bound them together. They say that when Ava Gardner died of pneumonia in London at the age of 67, on hearing the news, Frank Sinatra burst into tears, regretting that he had not spent more time with her. He had always considered her the love of his life, and she had always been in love with him, as she confessed in her memoirs: “We became lovers forever - eternally”.
