Subscriber Of The Week

Each week, we will feature a lucky subscriber (and Exit Zero T-shirt winner!) in this spot. This week’s subscriber: Shelley Van Dyke of North Cape May. How long have you been in Cape May? I’ve been living here for 12 years. Did you vacation here prior to that? Yes, I started vacationing here from Michigan in 1994, fell in love with it and moved here. Favorite thing about Cape May? Living close to the ocean and the small-town atmosphere. Least favorite thing? The summer parking issues. Favorite restaurants? The Merion Inn, Oyster Bay, Lucky Bones, 410 Bank Street, Tisha’s — I pretty much like all of them. Favorite place to stay? Before I moved here, it was the Goodman House on Decatur Street. If you could change one thing about Cape May, what would it be? No fees to use the beach! Favorite thing about Exit Zero? The goings-on around town. Least favorite thing about Exit Zero? When there are multiple pictures of the same people at the same event. And people who make up silly names! [Editor’s Note: We agree!] What’s your T-shirt size? Can I get a man’s extra-large?

Facebook Mystery Contest KNOW your way around Cape May? Check out the photograph above, prepared by our resident cryptographer Kate Chadwick. If you think you know what establishment this is, you could win a gift certificate to spend at a local business. Go to the Exit Zero Facebook page before Monday for a full-size, full-color photo and instructions on how to enter at facebook.com/exitzeropublishing. Good luck!

The American Podiatric Medical Association says the average person takes 8,000 to 10,000 steps a day. Those cover several miles, and they can all add up to about 115,000 miles in a lifetime. Believe it or not, this adds up to more than four times the circumference of the globe.

Talk Of The Town

Ramblings, idle gossip, and occasionally important odds ’n’ ends

Playing By Their Own Rules there has been much talk (boy, has there been much talk) about the design of the new Convention Hall. It’s been described as a Rite-Aid lookalike, a Bed Bath and Beyond wannabe. Rarely have we heard it described as a fitting tribute to this town. And that was before anyone knew about the big digital sign that recently popped up on the facade... A couple of years ago, we wrote about the plastic benches and vinyl fencing that Cape May, a National Historic Landmark city, chose to install on the promenade. And we wrote about the lighthouses (those strange plastic abominations) that greet you as you drive over the Cape May bridge. We called the city’s approval of these things an outrage, but we didn’t feel as though there was much we could do about it, since we were led to believe that these areas are not covered by National Historic Landmark regulations. Except, that’s not the case. It has been brought to our attention this week that, according to the Register of Historic Places compiled by the National Parks Service, it’s not true that the oceanside of Beach Avenue is exempt. According to the organization, the Cape May Historic District is “bounded on the South by the Atlantic Ocean from 2nd Avenue on the West to the Coast Guard Base on to the East.” That was written in 1969. It has not changed since. This is especially unsettling when you consider that the folks at the National Parks Service placed us on “Watch” status last year. Meaning? Certain “development and

rehabilitation efforts” within the Historic District were deemed “potentially detrimental” to our “historic character.” The Beach Theater demotion was a big red flag. The vinyl fencing and randomly assorted benches can’t have helped. And now we have a Rite-Aid on our doorstep. Complete with a big digital sign. But never mind the National Parks Service for a minute. We’re not going to squeal to them (like some of you have already done) because doing so would do more harm than good, taking us from “watch status” to “no status.” None of us want Cape May to lose its prized status as a National Historic Landmark. But what we WOULD like to do is inspire a spirited and intelligent debate about the way forward. The vinylization of the city’s prime areas is an affront. And not only that — it amounts to pure hypocrisy. We got wind this week that a local church recently petitioned for a digital sign. They were turned down by the HPC and we can see why; digital signs violate the city’s sign ordinance. But how do you think the members of that church feel when they drive past the behemoth digital sign on the beachfront? It’s a hypocrisy that’s turned off more than a couple of business owners in town. We talked to Jeff Gernitis of the Peter Shields Inn, who was hauled over the coals when he tried to make a minor change to his outdoor sign. “It was nitpicked,” he told us. And yet, just across the street from Peter Shields, there are city-approved public restrooms with vinyl (more vinyl!) siding. “The city wants one thing for us,” Jeff said,

“and does something extrememly different. It’s nice that they provide things like public restooms, but I would appreciate if they did this with sensitivity for what Cape May stands for.” And it’s not as though the city hasn’t had the choice. We looked up the minutes from a council meeting that took place on June 1, 2010, when a resolution that would establish a policy for HPC review of city projects — 123-06-2110 — was put before council. And shot down. Linda Steenrod, one of the instigators of the resolution, and David Kurkowski voted yes. Mayor Ed Mahaney and councilmember Terri Swain voted no. Niels Favre was absent, so he got no vote. Two to two sounds like a tie to us, but this isn’t baseball, folks. You don’t get extra innings. You get plastic lighthouses. Naysayers were worried that the HPC would end up wielding power in areas they shouldn’t. (Hmm... concern with the distribution of power. Where have we seen this before?) But this was an irrational concern. “The suggestion for HPC input was made just for that,” Linda Steenrod told us, “for input... the kind necessary for asthetically impactful projects, not for street or sewer projects. The city would ultimately have had the final say.” Such a resolution would prevent situations like we had during the fencing debacle of 2010. Council decided on the vinyl type, and when a member of HPC recommended a few more appropriate options, it was too late. “The decision was made that if the city could sell its previous fencing,” Linda

THE EXIT ZERO CARTOON... By Laurie Bender

ALEKSEY REALLY IS EVERYWHERE... IT TAKES DEDICATION TO BE THE Ez PHOTOGRAPHER! Talk Of The Town ? From Page 13 explained, “the money would go toward purchasing the more appropriate kind. But the vinyl is still standing, so I suppose they weren’t able to sell.” So how does the HPC feel about being informed of council’s design decisions, after the fact? Member Dave Clemans told us, “We as a commission wish that we had more influence over certain situations.” Situations, we can only assume, like those involving a digital sign. A digital sign that will be lit up soon enough with the name of Peter Nero and his Philly Pops. We’re surprised by the cost of this show. ($85,000 to book the band, $20,445 to meet the sound and lighting requirements). And we’re surprised by the cost of these tickets ($150 per seat, and yet you can see the same performance for between $30 and $111 at the Kimmel Center in Philadelphia on May 12.) Mayor Mahaney (who said that the city “didn’t need” the free double-page ads offered by Exit Zero) has no doubt the conconcert will sell out. We hope he’s right.

Meet The Innkeepers CHIP and Barbara Masemore could have been celebrating 20 years as Cape May innkeepers last week, but when we popped in to their B&B, the John F. Craig House on Columbia Avenue, they were busy prepping for their annual Kentucky Derby party. “These are the Derby hats,” Barbara said, gesturing to the rack of f lowered bonnets in the inn’s parlor. Chip was in the kitchen, preparing the evening’s mint juleps and teasing Traci Killeen, a guest from Bergen County who’s been coming to the Masemores’ Kentucky Derby parties for eleven years. “You never win the pool,” he said. “But we will this year,” Traci told him, between bites of one of Barbara’s homemade chocolate chip cookies. “My husband is betting on I’ll Have Another because, you know, he’s always at Carney’s saying, ‘I’ll have another!’” This is the innkeeper life, according to Barbara — developing relationships with everyone who walks through the front door. “Your guests become your family,” she says.

And Chip agrees. “We’ve been invited to stay at the homes of former guests,” he added. “And they didn’t even charge us.” But the Masemores haven’t always been naturals when it comes to the B&B business. When they met in 1987 (“Barbara picked me up at a bar,” Chip says), he was working as a contractor in Gettysburg and she as an interior designer. “We both loved Cape May,” Chip told us. “It’s one of the things that drew each of us to the other. And we were tired of what we were doing so we thought: How can we afford to buy property in Cape May? The answer was to rent the whole thing out.” Of course, this was a gamble. “We weren’t born with silver spoons,” Chip said. “And because both of us had worked for ourselves, we didn’t have corporate retirement funds or any such thing. Some of our friends thought we were nuts.” But it’s a gamble the couple was willing to make. In 1991, they sold everything they had in order to purchase the Inn at 22 Jackson on Jackson Street. “I’m pretty sure we would have considered selling our firstborn in order to make the down-payment,” Chip joked. On the entire drive to Cape May, they clutched the check they’d received from selling a Gettysburg property. “It wasn’t even made out to us,” Barbara said. “It was already earmarked for the closing on Jackson, but we held it as we drove. We had never held so much money in our lives, and all of our eggs were in that basket.” Ask her if she remembers her very first guest, and Barbara doesn’t skip a beat. “It was April 28th of ’92. We’d rented out the little cottage attached to the main house, and I remember every part of it.” Mostly, she remembers hearing the sound of a fire alarm going off while the renters were out to dinner. “Little did we realize,” Barbara said, “when we plugged in their refrigerator, we’d torn off the beer box attached to the back. The whole place was filled with smoke, so we called someone from the Virginia Hotel to help us carry a substitute fridge down from the third f loor. We transferred our guests’ food, and when they came home, they didn’t even know the difference.” It’s one of many comical stories the couple has from their 11 years at this inn, and the last nine spent at the John F. Craig House. (They’ll never use glass plates again, after an experience Chip had while serving French toast one morning. “Each one started breaking, one after the other,” he said. “Ping, ping, ping… just as I’d put it in front of a guest.”) But the Masemores are seasoned pros

Page 16 Talk Of The Town ? From Page 14 now — just ask satisfied guests like Traci (“They’re so welcoming. I even call them to check in when I’m not in Cape May”), or the state trooper who, after shooting and killing a criminal in the line of duty, found some respite at the John F. Craig House. “What means the most to me is how much guests trust us — or entrust us — us with important moments,” Barbara said, “times of celebration, times of grieving, even silly celebrations like the Kentucky Derby Party. And they keep coming back. .” So, to what do Chip and Barbara owe their great success? Teamwork. “We’re like ying and yang,” Barbara said. She does much of the interacting with guests, and Chip is responsible for everyday maintenance, renovation work, and… some decorating? “Chip has lots of collections of silly things — toys, games, and pictures of bawdy ladies from turn of the century,” Barbara said. And it’s these things, she told us, that contribute to the whimsy of the place. “The tackiness is tacky on purpose.” There is much to look at in the John F. Craig House, including a carnival wheel, a 1930s tricycle, a life-size cardboard cutout of

Thursday, May 10, 2012 Marilyn Monroe and a miniature green ’72 Cadillac that resembles the one in which the couple married. “It was a serious ceremony,” Chip said. “But we did it in a convertible in Vegas, and Elvis was there.” As for living where they work… it’s not as hard as one might assume, even after all these years. “We have friends who are innkeepers,” Barbara told us. “And when they need to argue, they have to get in the car and drive down to the beach to yell at one another. Luckily, Chip and I aren’t the Bickersons. We simply add a ‘darling’ or a ‘sweetheart’ to the end of a sentence, and that usually gets the point across.” But innkeeping is a job that does take its toll. “It’s twenty-four seven,” the couple said in unison. And age, according to Barbara, is starting to take its toll. “We’re both turning 70 next year,” she said, “so dealing with, say, a broken heating and cooling system at 8:30 on a Friday night of course makes you consider when and what your next move will be.” Right now, that next move is up in the air. It might just be left up to fate. “Chip did open a fortune cookie this winter that said to relish change, because it’s going to happen anyway,” Barbara said. “And that’s exactly what we intend to do.”

Clam Up HERE is a sign that summer is around the corner — the Rusty Nail is organizing a Clam-A-Rama on Saturday, May 19, a classic slice of seaside nostalgia. The main event will be a clam-shell pitching tournament, hosted by expert Joe McGetigan. He owns Clam Drain, a company which makes urethane resin replicas of shells found on the beach, which are then used for play. (It’s a game similar to that of horseshoes, only competitors are aiming for holes that have been dug in the sand when they “pitch” their clams.) “I have a love for the game,” Joe told us, “and it’s important to me to revive it. There’s just not a lot of shells anymore, and the next generation should be able to pick this up. It’s a dying art that, Joe says, has been around since the turn of the century. “There wasn’t as much in the way of entertainment back then,” he says. “This is a game born out of human ingenuity, and it caught on at the Jersey Shore.” But if nostalgia isn’t enough incentive to register (which you can do for $20 by logging on to beachshack.com), maybe the free T-shirt will do it, or perhaps the potential of

Talk Of The Town ? From Page 16 walking home with first prize, an overnight stay at the Beach Shack. We popped over to the Nail last Monday to see how opening preparations were going (and also because we missed the sight of the Nail’s firepit). “Very, very well,” said manager Andrew Skilton, who was so excited about the start of the season he almost forgot about the herniated disc in his back. “We’re going to be running clam specials all day,” Andrew said, “Clams casino, barbequed clams, clams on the half shell, buckets of steamers, clam pasta, and a dish called a clam bake… all for special Clam-A-Rama pricing. Of course, all the clams are local. This event is the talk of the town.” But a night at the Nail wouldn’t be complete without great music, so we inquired about the band, too. It’s a group called the Banana Trio (frontman Wesley Ochs was once gifted a banana tree by a friend who inspired the name.) “We mix it up a lot,” Wesley said, “new, old, modern, classic rock, reggae, oldies, a little bit of everything. The Nail is one of my favorite places to perform… it’s just a great atmosphere.” For those who aren’t able to make the

big event, the Beach Shack is offering The Clam Digger package throughout the summer. It consists of accommodations at the Beach Shack, four beers in a Rusty Nail Pail (shovel included), and an order of steamers. Oh, and a custom Beach Shack clamshell pitching set, which we’re sure you’ll put to good use… if you can pull yourself away from the firepit long enough.

Best Feet Forward ONE of the occupational hazards of owning feet is, well, having to buy shoes (although we understand quite a few people are into that sort of thing). Good thing we have Casale’s Shoes on the mall. It’s been there since 1959, so we’re quite confident they’ve got a handle on this shoe thing. We popped in for a chat with manager Lindsay Casale, and asked what’s trending for the impending summer season. “Sperry boat shoes are really having a moment right now,” Lindsay tells us. “We sell a lot of them, mostly to college

age kids.” Hmm. When we were college-age kids, we wore Birkenstock and Tiva sandals, and we couldn’t help but notice that Casale’s carries them, too. “Sperry is big with older folks, too, but it just seems to be trending right now with the younger customers.” We also couldn’t help but notice that even thought Sperry are referred to as “boat shoes,” they look a little more like recreational than work shoes. “They’re a lifestyle shoe. Yes, you can work in them, and people do.” Are they waterproof? “No, but they’re water-resistant — they’re made to withstand getting wet. But they’re probably more a ‘propping your feet up on your boat’ shoe than a ‘working on your boat’ shoe,” Lindsay says. Personally, we like to have our toes peeking out in the warmer months, so we’ll stick to our sandals. Or maybe those gorgeous leather Olukai flip-flops… don’t want to get in a footwear rut, after all. “We work really hard to carry as much of a variety of merchandise here as we can — something for everyone.”

On April 29, these handsome young men — Kane Daly, Roger Portewig and William Kelly — received their Eagle Scout citations, meaning they’ve earned the highest and most coveted rank in Scouting. The requirements included earning at least 21 badges, serving in a leadership position within the troop, and “planning, developing, and completing a community service project worthy of an Eagle Scout.” Kane designed and led construction of a migratory songbird garden in the Stone Hard Bird Sanctuary; Roger led the installation of a beautiful garden outside of the West Cape May Firehall, which is dedicated to the late, great founding Troop Master, Gene Sole; and William designed and led construction of an important sign, one that draws attention to the needs of North Wildwood’s Fresh Air Home, which provides seaside respite for underprivileged children. You make Cape May proud!

The Movie Column

H

By Tom Sims, Executive Director of the Cape May Film Festival

ave you had enough of student musicals yet? Oh, don’t give me that look. 80% of the kids are tone deaf, and the 20% that are any good use microphones that crackle and pop. No, it’s all good — I’m teasing. My daughter was in her school’s musical. The ol’ 80/20 rule applied, but it was all…good. She was in the chorus and was the most animated kid on the set (says her dad)! Who’s ready for some movies? The summer is usually reserved for Hollywood’s biggest blockbusters, but this year some are out a bit early — good for all of us who are ready for a good f lick! By now, audiences have rushed to see the anticipated superhero movie The Avengers, which is getting high praise from film lovers and critics. But you’ve read enough about that. We’ll have a review soon of another movie now in theaters called The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel, starring a favorite of mine, Judi Dench. It’s getting less than stellar reviews, but not being completely panned either. Let’s

Johnny Depp and Tim Burton bring the anticipated Dark Shadows to the big screen see what interesting offerings there are through Memorial Day. Dark Shadows: If you’re into movies, you’ve seen the trailer for this one. Buzz has it that if you’re a true fan of the campy 70s TV show, you’ll have some misgivings about the remake. I was never a fan

of the show, but I’m a big fan of campy done right. Johnny Depp is in the lead role of imprisoned vampire Barnabas Collins. Directed by Tim Burton, let’s see if this pair can play it up — or are they played out? Where Do We Go Now? This is a comedy/drama about a band of Lebanese women trying to ease tensions between Christians and Muslims in their home town. Sounds more drama than comedy, but it’s won all sorts of awards at Sundance and Toronto. This is definitely on my one to catch list. The Perfect Family: This marks the big screen return of Kathleen Turner, playing a mom nominated for a Catholic Woman of the Year. Her objective becomes showcasing her family as perfect when it is not. No family is perfect, we must accept each other, we put the “fun” in “dysfunctional”— this one employs every cliché. What movies have you seen? Did you like it or not? Email capemayfilm@hotmail.com and we’ll put your comments in an upcoming column!

Sleeping Around

Exit Zero tests the beds of Cape May’s hotels and inns. This week... Peter Shields Inn Where is it? The Peter Shields Inn is located at 1301 Beach Avenue, on the quieter, east end of town. What is it? This is a gorgeous Georgian Revival mansion that was built in 1907 by East Cape May developer Peter Shields as a summer home. It most recently underwent a renovation in the summer of 2010, when it was taken over by Jeff Gernitis and his late sister, Cathy Pelaez. Who runs it? The Peter Shields (or PSI, as it’s known around town) is run by Jeff and Maria Gernitis and Armando Pelaez. How many rooms? There are nine beautifully appointed guest rooms over three f loors of the PSI. What’s the vibe? It’s expansive and elegant, without feeling stuffy and fancy-pants. From the time your foot hits the spacious front porch with its spectacular ocean view until you unlock your door, you feel revived and relaxed at once. Amenities? We mentioned the porch and the view, right? Priceless. And then there’s the excellent Zagat-rated restau-

rant, which was jumping on the Thursday night of our visit, where we enjoyed the delectable pan-seared chicken breast with rosemary-shallot jus and homemade potato gnocchi. Our room (Room 3) was cozy but not cramped, and included a f lat-screen TV over the fireplace (!), which was f lanked on either side by comfy wing chairs, perfect for curling up with a book (which we did). The bathroom was equipped with a jacuzzi tub, perfect for relaxing away the cares of the day. Wireless access and antique furnishings seamlessly blended past and present. What’s the bed like? Ours was

C R A B

H O U S E

a gorgeous antique four-poster, dressed head-to-foot in down, a perfect nest. And if waking up to an ocean view isn’t the best way to start the day, we don’t know what is... okay, maybe it was the PSI breakfast. What’s For Breakfast: Maybe the best way to start the day is with shirred eggs topped with cheddar cheese and f lambeed in a cherry sauce sitting atop toasted English muffins with a side of bacon. And don’t get us started on the fresh-baked muffins, fruit plate, and yogurt parfaits. INSIDER TIP: There is a hospitality suite on the third f loor, providing coffee, tea, sodas, bottled water, chips and other snacks — including the most buttery chocolate chips EVER. It’s open 24 hours a day. We visited twice. Okay, three times. RANDOM FACT: Ask about dining privatlely a deux on the second f loor balcony. each week, Exit Zero will be ambushing unsuspecting and deserving citizens with a beautiful bouquet of flowers from a local florist. All you have to do is answer a question or two by our roving photographer, Gabi Urda. This week’s lucky recipient is Jennifer Nestle, who was ambushed while walking along Beach Avenue. Where are you from? I live in Pompton Lakes, New Jesrsey. Occupation: I’m a teacher’s assistant. What were you doing when we interrupted? I’m just heading over to the Mad Batter to have dinner with a friend. When is the last time you got some flowers? I’m so excited about this, because I really can’t remember the last last time I got flowers, so thank you! photo by gabi urda... flowers By Cape Winds

Three New Shows Head For SOMA

T

New works by Terri Amig, John Monteith and Greg Bennett open on May 19

HE talents of three artists will be on display at SOMA Gallery, which has announced its second art exhibition of the 2012 season. Returning regional artist artist Terri Amig will be exhibiting a series of new oil paintings “exploring the interdependencies that blind us all” in a show called “Terra Famila”. The second solo exhibit is “Transmutation,” a series of oils by John Monteith Oil. Completing the trio is local artist, Greg Bennett, whose exhibit of oils is titled “New and Familiar”. Amig’s rich portraits of our favorite domestic animals are done with the intention of rekindling recognition of our animal nature. In her new work Amig continues her path of exploring the animal kingdom with her unique and gentle sensitivity, combining her distinct artists vision with soulful portraiture. She formally trained at The Corcoran School

SOMA Gallery ? From Page 63 of Art, The Pennsylvania Academy of Art, and the California Institute of Art. Amig has exhibited in the South Jersey area, New York City and Buck County, PA galleries. She works and lives in an old farmhouse near Cape May. Monteith’s paintings find their origins in a desire to articulate infinite nuance within a finite framework. “Every visual element acts as both formal and an emblematic accessory to a greater whole in an attempt to create an intimately interpreted pictorial language,” he says. Although anchored within reality, the paintings allude to a completely fictional space that can only be made manifest through the image making process. Monteith, an accomplished self-taught artist who resides in Columbia, South Carolina has exhibited in New York, Miami, South Carolina. His work has been published in Harpers, Southern Quarterly, The Art of the X-Files, and Graphi Fine Art Photography. In “The New and Familiar” Bennett’s paintings are inspired by events in his life — “rarely anything dramatic,” says Bennett, “just simple observations inspired by

and a bonfire. A common theme in Bennett’s work is always about the personality of his subject and capturing the light to illustrate a mood. “As an artist, my journey creating a painting is one that I cannot describe in words, it is a very personal and emotional experience.” Bennett studied at the York Academy of Arts in York, PA and the Gloucester Academy of Fine Arts in Gloucester, MA. The exhibit will be at SOMA from May 19 to June 17. An Opening Artist Reception will be held on May 19, 6-9pm. The gallery is at 31 Perry Street in Carpenter’s Square Mall, Cape May. What’s Your Story?

Every week, we ask: Who the heck are you and what are you doing here? Who are you and where are you from? I’m Debbie Farbanish, and we’re from Pittstown, New Jersey. [Reporter’s note: Debbie was surrounded by husband and four — that’s FOUR —children, ages 4-14.] And what were you doing when we interrupted you? We’re just here at Cape May Wicker picking up a few things — it’s always the last stop on our annual trip to Cape May. We stayed at Summer Station, and we’re headed home from here. Are you on vacation? We come here for our anniversary every year. This year is twenty years! Congratulations! Um....did you ever think about getting away without the kids? Just a thought. Yes, we’ve thought about it — it just hasn’t worked out that way yet. This week’s issue theme is “foot.” Do you have any thoughts about feet you’d like to share? Absolutely. I’m dying to get a pedicure — and soon. Does that count? Interview by Kate Chadwick PHOTOGRAPH by Gabi Urda

The Answer Lady

T

Wise answers to perplexing questions

he Answer Lady invites inquiries from gentle readers on all manner of relationship quandaries, matters of the heart and ethics. If you’d like to send a query, write to info@exitzero.us. Dear Answer Lady This is going to sound ridiculous, but here goes. I’m looking forward to summer and hitting the beach with my first serious girlfriend. The problem is, I’m scared of sharks. Like, terrified. I know it’s crazy, but I don’t want her to think I’m a lunatic. How do I get past this? – Landlocked Dear Landlocked The Answer Lady appreciates the fact that you started your letter with the ‘ridiculous’ disclaimer — it is a time-saver for her. Indeed, she completely understands your fear, as her own fear of rodents – particularly rats — is practically pathological. She once heard a mouse behind the paneling in her old apartment, and, had her roommate not arrived home when he did, would have gone through with her plan to call the police. (On the other hand, it’s much more

ing a large, glossy color photo of a shark, in full mouth-open-I’m-going-to-snapyou-in- two pose. He also taped one to his refrigerator and his bathroom mirror. The more he looked at these photos, the more he became accustomed to them, the more his fear subsided, or so he said. It will be a cold day in hell when the Answer Lady starts putting pictures of mice around her house, but it’s worth a shot. Otherwise, just fess up. Your girlfriend will probably think it’s cute. Hopefully. likely one will tangle with a rodent in one’s lifetime than a shark, but let us not start down the ‘who is crazier here?’ road, or we will be here all day.) The Answer Lady once had a dear friend who suffered from your exact phobia — he saw the movie “Jaws” as a child and never quite recovered from the experience. He knew that the odds he would ever actually encounter a shark ran somewhere between ‘slim’ and ‘none,’ particularly since we lived in Lancaster, Pennsylvania at the time. He dealt with his fear by find-

Dear Answer Lady My girlfriend wants to go on a horsedrawn carriage ride for her birthday, which is a couple of weeks away. The problem is, I have never told her about my fear of horses, and I don’t know if I can go through with it. Shall I try to talk her out of it? - Not a cowboy Dear Boy No, you cannot talk her out of it. She is not asking you to participate in a rodeo, for heaven’s sake. Listen to the nice Cape May Carriage driver, look at the pretty buildings, thenrpeat “It’s only a horsey, it’s only a horsey” as often as necessary.

Tea by the Sea Treat Mom this mother’s day!

«

AROUND 400 people turned out on Sunday, April 22, for a beef and beer at the Bayview in Wildwood Crest to benefit Brody Bove. The adorable 19-month-old (pictured above with parents Madonna and Keith Bove, both of Cape May) has been diagnosed with a lifelong condition called Communicating Hydrocephalus. While doctors do not know what could have brought this on, they do know that it results in an acculumation of fluid in the brain, and that little Brody will require multiple surgeries throughout his life. Wanting to support the cause, local businesses — including the Ugly Mug, Carney’s, Cape May Organic Market, Big Wave Burritos, Never Surrender Tattoo, Doyle Dowdell Photography, Artisans Alcove, Sea Gear, Good Scents, Collier’s and Gorman’s Liquor Store — contributed prizes that were raffled and auctioned. If you’d like to donate, checks can be made out to the Brody Bove Fund and mailed to 119 Village Road, Villas, 08251. We’re all pulling for you, little man!

And I refer not to Young Albert, who is less than a foot tall when standing on all fours, but does exceed twelve inches when up on his hind legs with paws in the air, dancing (he does this to beg for biscuits, battle Indian Cobras, and play ping-pong). No, I am talking about Wee Johnnie, one of this city’s founders, and a man who may have lacked stature but had the heart of a lion (not in the sense that our mutual friend Ernie Hemingway had the heart of a lion: preserved in a jar of formaldehyde in his study). I met Wee Johnnie when I was battling pygmies in Hwondoland. He had been accepted as one of them, and was guiding the fight against pillaging imperialists (of which I was one), much in the manner of that overblown movie that took the cinema by storm last year, except that Wee Johnnie and the pygmies were not tall or blue. Wee Johnnie stood firm, refusing to abandon his

tiny brothers, refusing the bow to threats, promises or pleas. In the end, a small bag of gold sovereigns bought his loyalty, and from that moment on, Wee Johnnie stood by my side through thick and thin. We faced down wild Indians, Conquistadors, Irishmen, werewolves and Vikings together, and when we discovered the Fountain of Youth locally, Wee Johnnie was first to sup. Such was his fame that whenever bad guys within three states heard the sound of Shetland Pony hooves

outside the bar, then the tread of tiny booted feet on boardwalk outside, they would flee in terror of his speed with his scale-model silver sixguns. When more peaceful times came, Wee Johnnie took a plot of land facing the beach, and had a wonderfully ornate home built. It was not to scale: Wee Johnnie liked the ocean view and did not fancy his top floor only being four feet above the sidewalk. Instead it was a regular four-story townhouse that actually contained 24 interior floors, with specially made minuscule furniture and appliances. Wee Johnnie liked to make visitors of more common size slither in and lie on their faces trying to sup tea from thimble-sized china cups. In the end, Wee Johnnie came undone not by arrow or bullet or poison dart (the three most common ends for members of the Fountain of Youth Club) but because he dozed off on the beach one night and the tractor next morning did not see him. There is a wonderful golden statue of him in town, though for the life of me I cannot seem to find it.

Activity Of The Week

C

A weekly column by Catherine Dugan. This week: The Great Cape May Footrace

ape May is a great town for runners. It’s flat, there’s a nice mix of wide streets and narrow lanes, you can almost always see the ocean, and just when you’re thinking about skipping your workout, the Coast Guard recruits jog by to inspire you. No wonder the Chamber of Commerce sponsors the Great Cape May Footrace, scheduled this year for Saturday, May 12. Since 1979, runners have gathered on Beach Drive for the beginning of a course that winds its way through the residential streets of Cape May. Runners of all sorts — men and women, boys and girls, can choose to run a 10K run or a 5K run/walk. Some 800 to 1,000 runners are expected to participate. Such inclusion in athletics is not in keeping with Victorian tradition, which let wealthy gentlemen set athletic standards, to ensure that wealthy gentlemen won. Runners— men and women of all classes — had been racing through England’s streets for money for 200 years before an 1850 track meet at Exeter College supposedly gave birth to the sport. (The Shrewsbury School had run “May Races”

And they’re off. Runners put their best foot forward at the Great Cape May Footrace seven years earlier, but Exeter gets the credit, probably because Shrewsbury’s event was based on rough games played by local farm workers.) The Amateur Athletic Association excluded anyone who had ever run (or rowed, or cycled) for money. They also chose to disregard all records not set on a flat, 440-yard track. This had the effect of discrediting early

records, such as the first four-minute mile, which some sources say was run on London streets by James Parrott in 1770. The AAA was zealous in its amateur standards, effectively barring anyone without family money from serious training. Walter George, a lateVictorian runner, and Paavo Nurmi, the “Flying Finn,” were deemed “professional” and disqualified. It wasn’t until May 1954 that Roger Bannister became the “first” amateur to run the four-minute mile. No one will check your amateur status before the Great Cape May Footrace, which begins at 8am at Beach and Stockton. Anyone can run — or walk — although advance registration is required. You’ll see experienced runners and beginners, and it’s hard to tell the difference until the race gets going. Generally, the experienced runners are the ones who are glad if the weather is cool and cloudy. The entry fee for adults is $20, $15 for children. For more information, contact the Chamber of Commerce of Greater Cape May, 609-8845508, extension 102. Lace up your sneakers for the Great Cape May Footrace! LCMR Student Of The Week

«

Senior Mike Frankenfield lives in North Cape May with his parents Terry and Nancy. Frankenfield will go down in LCMR High School history as the first boys’ lacrosse player to score 100 goals. In addition to this feat, he landed a full scholarship to Wagner College for his lacrosse prowess. On April 23, Frankenfield scored his record-making 100th goal in a game against Ocean City. Since fifth grade, he has worked long and hard at this goal. Frankenfield said that there were tons of emotions that day, and as he came closer to his milestone goal, he “tried harder and harder to get it.” Frankenfield’s hard work and dedication is reflected in the numerous offers he received to play at colleges like Wagner, University of North Carolina, Villanova, and Maryland. Besides excelling on the field, he keeps his grades up and is a Peer Leader. He’s also been captain of the varsity lacrosse squad since sophomore year. Frankenfield will make an immediate impact on the field for the Wagner College men’s lacrosse team. If all goes well, he’d like to play lacrosse professionally. With the support of family and friends, Frankenfield is sure to go far. by Kevin Alexander / photograph by Jackson sole

Tiki is a very cute 1 year old who has had a pretty tough life so far. He has lots of nervous energy, but is submissive. He doesn’t know commands, but wants to please. He needs someone to dedicate the time and give him the exercise and training he needs to thrive. He would do best as an only pet and no children under 10. If you can give Tiki the loving home he deserves, come meet him today. The adoption fee is $95.

«

Blue Bell has had a rough life! She was emaciated when rescued, but was given lots of food, water, love, and an emergency hysterectomy at the shelter. Even through these rough patches, her spirits are high and optimistic. She is healthy and still growing. She’s not great with cats, but good with dogs and very social. She is strong, so be mindful of small children, and knows some commands. The adoption fee is $95.

«

Manning is patiently waiting for a forever home! He’s nervous at first, but he’s a very sweet boy. He’s excitable, and gets a bit mouthy when wound up. With some training, he could be a great boy! He gets along with other dogs, but is terrified of cats. He needs a home without smaller kids, because he’s too excitable. If Manning sounds like the right fit for you, stop in the shelter and give him a second chance! The adoption fee is $95.

Bird Droppings

I

The weekly report from the world’s birdwatching capital... by Seymore Thanu

t’s Mother’s Day Weekend. Your public relations minded neighbors at the Cape May Bird Observatory remind you that you’re in for a marathon weekend! Hundreds of people travelling the trails of Higbee Beach, skulking around in pre-dawn hours (make sure your robe is securely fastened when you fetch the morning paper). “What?”some perplexed readers may think. “Why all this for Mother’s Day?” Ah, you’ve never heard of the World Series of Birding, have you? The day, (May 12) when 500 list-crazed birders charge around like pin balls trying to see as many species of birds as possible between midnight and midnight. At some point, most of these birders will wind up south of the Cape May canal (and some will spend the entire day here). You, Mr. or Ms. I’m-Going-To-SneakOut-Early-And-Get-The-Paper-And-A Cup-Of-Coffee might think 5:52am is early. Heck, by sunrise most top teams have been on the road seven hours already and have tallied 60 species or more.

Those shadowy figures with their binoculars pinned to the bird feeder in your back yard (the one that scouting reports said a Eurasian Collared Dove has been frequenting) are World Series participants. They’re perfectly harmless. In fact, they’re so focused on getting the bird they’re oblivious to your presence (and your underwear, or lack of). The only way

to arouse their ire is to shoo the birds from the feeder or crank up the lawn mower (an action which at 5:52am is not going to endear you to the neighbors, either). So what kind of a person would engage in this brand of intense, focused, bird watching madness? Oh, the usual kind. Doctors, engineers, paper delivery people, cops, chemists, teachers, college students, construction workers, artists, actors, newspaper columnists, yoga instructors, bankers, and lots of elementary, middle and high school kids. You know. The usual sort of people you meet in Cape May. Why are they willing to beat themselves into exhaustion, scan with binoculars until their eyes look like they were cut out of bacon rind, and feel like someone worked them over with an emery board? Well, it used to be that they weren’t doing it for the money. Being in the World Series of Birding years ago was mostly a matter of prestige. The event has now grown to be immensely profitable (from the standpoint

To all of the individuals, businesses and organizations who donated to Brody’s benefit, thank you so much for your support! There are too many to list, but we appreciate the contribution from each and every one of you. With the generous support of people like you, we are able to make sure he gets the surgeries and the treatment that he needs. Your donation helped to make such a trying time so much easier for Brody and our family. We are full of gratitude and appreciation. Thank you again for your support. Participants have raised $600,000 on pledges made on the number of species they see in this one day. When you consider that some top teams have over $700 per species pledged and that an average of 260 species can be seen, you can see why it is that the birders staring at your bird feeder are not interested in watching you parade around in your skivvies. Seeing you in your skivvies gets them $0. Seeing the Eurasian Collared Dove at your feeder might be worth hundreds of dollars. So relax. Whether you’ve got the best looking legs in Cape May or the worst, it’s all the same to them. But if that Collared Dove shows up at your feeder, they’re going to love you to death. Then they’ll leave. Fame is f leeting, the next bird waiting to be found. The World Series of Birding is hosted by the New Jersey Audubon and organized by CMBO. Our staff are always available to help with questions. Scan the bookshelves for bargains in the vintage books section, look at the wonderful Charley Harper merchandise including a terrific lithograph done just for the CMBO, or just browse. Check the sighting sheets to check what’s being seen out in the field, check out the lake from the wide selection of scopes and binoculars. Sit on our garden benches and enjoy the birds at the feeders and the view of Lake Lily. If you can’t make it in person, you can also visit us online www. Seymore Thanu is none other than New Jersey’s own Pete Dunne, Director of the Cape May Bird Observatory and Chief Communications Officer for New Jersey Aud0ubon. Pete uses his talents and energy to make the natural world real for others. Author of several books on and about nature (available at CMBO) he weaves information, insight and even fantasy into a net that captures minds and hearts. Tour Cape May by Historic Vintage Shoe-Car Regular car rentals don’t allow you to say much about yourself. Not so Cape May’s premier auto rental VIP service. We have refurbished 20 of the city’s famed 1940s “shoe cars” to allow discerning visitors the chance to see Cape May the way it was meant to be seen: from a speedy, chic shoe.

HISTORICAL FACT: in the 1940s, smart NJ car designers, seeking to avoid a tax on autos, realized that footwear was exempt from war taxes, and so built and sold hundreds of “shoe cars”. They were fast, light and very good in minor collisions, being made of leather and able to be shined back to perfection!

MODELS: We have the “brogue”, the “deck shoe”, the “Doctor Marten” and the “spikeheeled fetish boot” (the latter has a rather restrictive driving position, that some visitors appreciate more than others)

The Dating Column

Stella Dixon’s take on romance on Old Cape Island

B

RITTANY is dating a jerk. His name is Maxwell (I know… he even sounds like an arse), and he’s one of these guys who thinks he’s god’s gift to women because he’s easy on the eyes. But not even a Brad Pitt-esque bone structure can make up for being a pig. Maxwell is a cheater, a snob, and he’s selfish in bed. BUT… Brittany keeps going back to him. Maxwell has given her no reason to expect that he’ll change. He makes no apologies for the way he is — proud to be the kind of guy who gives good men everywhere a bad name. So, no, Maxwell is not worthy of much respect. But at some point, a person can’t help but think… neither is Brittany. It’s deciding on what this point is that’s tricky. At what stage does putting up with the mistreatment of a lover stop making us a bunch of hopeless romantics and start making us pathetic? We’ve all been there. That place where suspending self-respect doesn’t seem like such a bad deal, if it means holding on, just

a little bit longer, to the person for whom our heart aches. So what if you don’t see a future with me, we’re tempted to say. So what if you don’t love me? Who cares that you have a crush on my sister, want to date other people, and admit you’re only waiting until something better comes along… I don’t see why we can’t keep this going! Even if we know we’re being used — for sex, for company, for an ego-boost — we stick around. Somehow, being loved half-

way seems easier than not being loved at all. So we cling to our quasi-romance with everything we’ve got. We cling to the person who’s already decided we’re expendable. Nice enough to be around, perhaps. Maybe pretty great to be around from time to time, even. Just not great enough. We let the Maxwells of the world have the best of us when they’re in the mood, and we wait around for them to call when they’re not. And the nice guys of the world who just aren’t sure about us... we allow them the time they need to make up their minds. We make allowances we’ve judged others for in the past. We make allowances we’re bound to judge ourselves for in the future, as soon as we come to terms with reality: a relationship that requires suspending self-respect isn’t a relationship worth having. But most importantly, a person who allows us to suspend our self-respect isn’t worth having. Because while we’re busy trying not to hate ourselves for clinging to that person who’s semi-aware of our worth, we could be missing out on the someone who’d never question it.
