The businesses of West Cape May staged their first annual Hospitality Night on Friday, November 22... and what a hit it was! Businesses were packed as shoppers roamed the streets of West Cape May, via the decorated Wilbraham Park, taking advantage of discounts, treats, live music and, you know, all-around hospitality. “What a great way to kick off the holiday season!” said Wendy Collins, who owns the Ripple and Root store with partner Laura Shaddock. SOME INTERESTING CAPE MAY TRIVIA AND FUN FACTS
Weird Sea Creature
Did You Know?
What We’re Reading
The lionfish, which can grow anywhere from two to nearly 18 inches in length, is well-known for its sad yet endearing expression. When the fish’s pectoral fins are fanned out, it resembles the mane of a male lion, hence the name. This guy comes complete with bold, zebralike stripes and venomous spines. While his poison is not deadly to humans, it is extremely painful.
Cape May has been named the seventh coolest small town in America by Budget Travel magazine. According to the article: “You might be convinced that Cape May, America’s oldest beach resort town, is stuck in the past. True, you can still find reminders of the seaside burgh’s genteel heritage around every corner, from its rows of pastel Victorians to its butterfly gardens. Local lore has it that refined ghouls even haunt the 1879 Emlen Physick Estate (above). But Cape May’s glory days haven’t yet passed it by (to misquote the poet laureate of New Jersey, a certain Mr. Springsteen).”
Midnight in Chernobyl By Adam Higginbotham We watched the Netflix series. Now, we’re reading the unbelievable, untold story of a nuclear disaster the world will never forget.

Ramblings From The Editor
G
Ideas, idle gossip and occasionally important odds ’n’ ends... by Jack Wright
ot the chance last week to chat with the man behind the planned new ICONA hotel on Cape May’s beachfront. The announcement that ICONA had bought the old Beach Theater, and a few more adjoining buildings, for around $10 million generated controversy on social media (let’s face it, what DOESN’T?) mainly due to the fear that the new hotel was going to be some ungodly Hawaiian theme affair. The ICONA chairman and CEO Eustace Mita was, I think, rather taken aback at the initial reaction, but is naturally hoping the community will eventually get behind it. Yes, the company IS using the name Mahalo (it means gratitude) in Cape May, but that will be attached to a smaller hotel on the beachfront that the company already owns. The planned new hotel will be called ICONA Cape May. Eustace also told me that there would likely be an even larger mix of retail and eateries than there is right now — two more, in fact. He mentioned that he’s a
³
big fan of many of the existing businesses. The current tenants will be able to enjoy another summer at the site, with construction planned to begin in about a year (after ICONA has, of course, satisfied the city’s construction officials and Historic Preservation Commission), with completion hoped for by the summer of 2021. It’s great that we have a city and a community that closely watches the infrastructure of Cape May, anxious to retain its

Victorian charm. (I hate to see vinyl buildings on this island.) But dynamic new buildings (I’m looking at you, Lokal Hotel) are essential to the evolution of the city. Great news that the city approved a $2 million bond that will pave the way for a $6 million renovation of the old Franklin Street School into a new library the town can be proud of. Add that to the planned new Harriet Tubman museum nearby and the existing Stephen Smith House (he was also a key figure in the Underground Railroad) and you have quite the cultural nexus emerging in an area of town that’s long been downtrodden. The planned new park will only add to the appeal of a renewed Lafayette Street. I don’t know what the impending bankruptcy of Bumble Bee Foods will mean for the factory that’s based on Ocean Drive, on the way to Wildwood, but the fact that the San Dieg0-based company has agreed to sell its assets to a Taiwan-based company doesn’t sound like good news. Until next week, happy Thanksgiving!

Here’s what the EZ team had for breakfast this week
E
very week, the Exit Zero crew goes for lunch (or dinner or, maybe even on occasion, breakfast) at one of Cape May’s excellent dining establishments. Then we give you the skinny on what we ate, what we talked about (or some of what we talked about), who spat their drink from laughing too hard, who served us, who we bumped into and, you know, the general vibe. The place: Out There Coffee in the Washington Commons complex that houses Acme. The back story: The shop is the brainchild of 30-something husband-and-wife team Nikki Neilson and Craig Stonis, who’ve been “out there” themselves — they once quit their jobs as dental hygienist and carpenter, respectively, to travel the country with their dog in a 24-foot trailer. Between hiking, biking, skiing and canoeing (and taste-testing from some of the nation’s most innovative coffee shops) the couple envisioned a future that would be fulfilling, artisanal and community-minded. They combined Nikki’s experience as a barista in Oregon with Craig’s passion for home-roasting... and Out There Coffee was born. The ethos: Eco-friendly. Think stainless steel straws and upcycled countertops. Bring your own to-go cup and you’ll receive 10% off your order. The menu: Whether you’re looking for a coffee-shop standard or something a bit more inventive, you can be sure all treats are scratch-made locally with gluten-free and healthy snack options. We love those superfood lattes (hello, Ruby Ginger with beetroot, ashwagandha, spices and ginger), and the shakes (try the Peppy Monkey!). The order: Breakfast! We opted for the avocado toast served on gluten-free bread made by a local baker and topped with everything seeds, a perfectly boiled egg and hot sauce (if you’re feeling spicy). We could have eaten three servings each — not because the toasts weren’t satisfying (they really were!), but because they were just that good. We also opted for a chai latte and a hot tea. The conversation: It’s the offseason, so Nikki and Craig are now only putting in about 50-60 work hours a week. Slackers. Their advice for those looking to open their own business? “You have to love it. Really love it.” The hot tip: Can you order a delicious, gluten-free holiday cake in a variety of flavors from Out There? Yes, yes you can. Can you also order their signature and best-selling energy balls? Yes, yes you can.

This week, Zach Boyd from The Rusty Nail is up. How long have you been bartending? One and a half years. Favorite drink to make? A blueberry mojito. It was surprisingly the first drink I learned how to make. What’s your bartending pet peeve? When I slam my knee on the well when I walk by. I have managed to hit every well behind the bar on numerous occasions. It hurts. Dream job? Hand model.

Terry O’Brien’s legendary column... social satire, shameless plugs — and general self-indulgence
ometimes a Thursday is just a Thursday; get up, go to work, go home. But sometimes a Thursday is where you give your co-worker a ride home, she talks you into a Caramel Frappe from McDonald’s, you drop her off and spend the next 20 minutes aimlessly winding through North Cape May which must have been laid out by a team of drunken pirates in 1782 or the Paving Company of the Blind because none of these roads make any sense, yet you somehow emerge at 5 West, where you’re supposed to meet another co-worker, Sean Hagerty, for a cocktail but he bails on you just like you knew he would (he was resolving an EZFS computer issue, but this column is about my hurt feelings, not his IT practicality). Sometimes on a Thursday you’ll get out of your new-to-you 2013 Toyota Highlander (have I mentioned I own a Highlander?) and get properly mugged by Gregg Carpenter and Brady Schoenrock and they escort you inside where Ed McDonough and Barry Tischler await. For the uninitiated, this is about as close as you get to a Round Table in Cape
May. Ed and Brady are hosts of a long-running radio show, The Locals. And oooooooh the dirt they dished that I dare not print here lest I disappear Jeffrey Epstein-style. Suffice to say; lots of folks who believe they’re big fish in our little pond... Amirite? (What? Why is everyone looking at me?) They all expressed condolences for the recent loss of my rock star career (nothing but soft acoustic music for these ringing ears from now on) and Barry pulled me aside and said so many nice things about me I can hardly believe he was talking about me. Barry
is a great guy and Patient Zero of the current Cape May open mic movement, which he kick started with his classic Pilot House shows a decade ago. Gregg and I talked about working together on a future project. I’ve made a bit of a running joke that I keep offering Gregg work and he keeps turning me down. This may have given the wrong impression. In truth, I offered many musicians lots of work this year who turned me down. Why? Because the work was on the weekend, which every good (and Gregg is good) Cape May musician has booked years in advance. Fact is; if I call and you are available on a weekend, I’m wondering what’s wrong with you. Regardless, Gregg is down for doing something together one of these days, as long as he doesn’t have to play every song “note for note.” I said “why start now?” (ZING!) ends up with them at a Phish concert, and confessed that, should his time soon come, he’s grateful he would not have much of a bucket list left. Well said. Ed was Ed. Quiet. Stoic. Even-tempered. Until Gregg and I got into a list of songs we never, ever, ever, never, never, ever have to sing again. This list consisted entirely of Ed’s favorite songs. This got his Irish up. A little. I’ve known these gentlemen a long time but rarely get to hang out so this was... nice. Everybody bought everybody a drink and sometimes a Thursday is okay. Tattoo of the Week: 5 West bartendress Stephany O’Leary, of the recently concluded monthlong birthday celebration, has the chords to “In My Life” by The Beatles tattooed on her upper left rib cage. I hear. Brady and Gregg confirmed. I, as a married man, couldn’t look away. Uh, couldn’t look. Steph is a gregarious drink slinger (the Paco Diablo is muah) and was heretofore unaware I wrote a column in Exit Zero. I look forward to this being her first. Prior to this Serling-esque stop at 5 West, I served at Exit Zero, where Don Shough had the Impossible burger and, like most folks, couldn’t believe how much it tastes like a real burger. It’s always good to see Don, a good guy and a transcendent guitar player, until he says things like, “Just popping in for a bite before my gig in AC with the Dane Anthony Band.” Why do you hurt me so, Don? Still, if anyone deserves the good gigs, it’s Don. Got to meet Susan Bryant, who enjoyed my previous column, but then she’d had a few, and her sober-ish friend Beth Blair-Slemmer, who were in for drinks, apps and the ambience of a smalltown writer badgering them for info so could poke fun at them in his column. Great to meet you! (Please come back.) THE IT’S HAPPENING OH MY GOD IT’S HAPPENING I CAN’T BELIEVE IT’S REALLY HAPPENING (Okay, it May Be Happening) Of The Week: Stellar Mojo and Behind the Beautiful singer-songwriter Jon Kat-
November 28, 2019 ity came in with his sweet love, Leslie Weidel, for the balsamic glazed brussel sprouts and copious amounts of bourbon and tequila (the only amounts these should be served in). Jon is a fellow R.E.M. aficionado (Distiple) and we made a plan to make a plan to play a few songs together at some nebulous future time and place but probably a Tuesday night at EZFS which might could possibly lead to a sort-of R.E.M. acoustic thing down the road. We first discussed this a few years ago, and he’s sweet to consider it, but I’m hoping he’s way too rich and famous for me by the time we put it together. Weeks Without a Tribute Band: 0. Bill Reinert dropped off his wife and a few of her friends for a girl’s night and said, “Hey, are you still at Elaine’s?” Elaine’s? ELAINE’S!!?!?!! HOW DARE YOU!!! No, I’m not there anymore but wish them nothing but (mostly) the best. Like, I hope they make a lot of money and stuff, but, like, also get a flat tire. Turns out some of Bill’s wife’s lady friends were also musicians, who played some folk classics for us, followed by BlueBoner Jay Bethel, who was in with wife Margaret for a bite and wasn’t expecting to play but we guilted him into it so there. In fact, Bill Caterini and I have had so many guests join us in previous weeks that, what the hell, TERRY O’BRIEN TUESDAYS AT EXIT ZERO FILLING STATION ARE NOW AN OPEN MIC. Prepare accordingly. And if you get this in time, come hang with me and Bill tonight, Wednesday, for some pre-turkey drinks and music! Lastly, if you come to a restaurant with your friends, park, sit at a table then leave because said restaurant does not carry a particular kind of beer despite the stunning array of delicious food on the menu, it’s possible you’re a little over-invested in your drinking habit and, yes, your friends were annoyed — they were being nice. ’Til next week, don’t get caught in The Undertow.

The Old Fogey
W
Ah, those good old Cape May days... by Jackson D’Catur
e are not having turkey in the D’Catur Mansion this Thanksgiving. I know that those veganitarians among you (three, to be exact, and we know where you live) will be cheering limply with excitement at the news, and those florid scavengers who insist on thinking of themselves as carnivores are roaring in quadruple-bypass rage at the thought. But this is not a matter of principle, exactly, so much as necessity. Which brings me to the next order of business: if you see a small flock of fat, agile turkeys in your travels, would you be a darling and apprehend them? Alive would be ideal, but given the readiness of the Mansion Kitchen, dead would suffice, so long as it is by fright or a single pistol shot to the head. Do not entertain any notion of turning up with one that is flat as a pancake and bears the same tread marks as your car tires. The pickle we find ourselves in came about through good old Cape May tinkering. Otherwise known as “they don’t bloody well know when to leave well enough alone”
syndrome, a recognized medical condition: if you look it up in any good medical dictionary you will see a photograph of our fair city. After last year’s dinner, we were discussing how to polish the event to an ever-greater sheen when one of the vile and random great-great-something children that infest the mansion declared that “the young people like turkey legs more than those steaming lumps of breast you old people favor!” Well, after I had thrashed him, I told the breeders at our “organic” farm – Sweetmeat
Pastures – to get on the matter. I can’t say what I had in mind. If pressed, I suppose I might have been more precise, possibly using the description “more small turkeys, please, so that we have more legs.” I find that when dealing with very clever people you have to be very clear, as otherwise they demonstrate exactly how the line between extreme genius and total moron is a thin one. The day came that they asked us all to the pasture to see the new breed. “We call these the Big Leggys!” one of the dome-headed lab-coated wretches announced. With the clap of his long-fingered hands, a large crate was opened and out they came. At least, I assume it was them. Instead of a flock of brainless fat potential dinners, there was a blur of motion, a thunder of clawed feet and we were all sent sprawling. When I regained consciousness, the pasture gate was open and there were no birds to be seen. I turned my dusty rage on the nearest scientist, who said, “You wanted more legs! We bred them with a dozen each. Only… they clocked 120mph leaving the farm…”

hink about the role of coincidence in life, and it’s easy to believe in magic. A man in California gets a stomach pain at 7:00 in the evening and later finds out his father in Maryland died of a stomach aneurysm at the exact same time, at 10:00. A woman from Dublin finds her own Communion dress — complete with label — decades later, at a thrift store in Boston, while shopping for for her granddaughter. Two sets of identical twins are raised as fraternal twins by families in neighboring states and only find each other in adulthood, after the invention of social media. Is it coincidence, or could it be magic? You probably let a little magic into your life already — you toss salt over your shoulder or knock on wood to avert bad luck. You make a wish on your birthday candles and believe in the healing power of a mother’s kiss. You wore your lucky socks to a job interview. Intuition made you call a friend just when they needed to hear from you; you solved a problem in a dream; or you

experienced déjà vu. You’ve marveled at the wonders that science can achieve and the patterns that mathematics can reveal. Witches and other modern practitioners of magic — or “magick,” to distinguish it from entertainers’ illusions — assert that this everyday magic is no different, no more good or evil, and no more or less powerful, than magic done with the help of a spell. Magic, they say, is simply directed energy. When you focus your mental energy to achieve your goal, you are casting a kind of spell. Spirit Fair at Willow Creek Winery. This fair presents a variety of ways to “connect with a hidden world.” In an atmosphere of fun, with visual artists conducting demonstrations and live music playing, explore the possibilities. Maybe a session with a lightworker or a reiki therapist can unblock your energy, or maybe you need a nutrition coach, or a yoga teacher. Shop for gemstone jewelry that looks beautiful and may make you feel more connected to nature. Find lotions that give your skin an otherworldly glow. Join a drum circle. See what the future may hold with tarot cards, angel cards, or an astrological chart reading. Ask a psychic for help with a thorny problem while your kids paint ceramics. Take a photograph that shows off your aura. Ask a medium — a person in touch with the highest form of intuition — to help you contact a loved one in the great beyond, or to help you understand the messages you are already receiving. Sample a healing tea. The event is free and open to the public.

TAURUS: You will take advantage of Small Business Saturday and forgo the big mall in favor of supporting Cape May’s mom-and-pop shops. You will reward this good deed with a Christmas Tree cocktail at Exit Zero Filling Station. GEMINI: You will spend the weekend decorating for the holidays. And wondering if Selena Gomez is really over Justin Bieber. CANCER: You will buy your Christmas tree at Cape Island Gardens. It will be so beautiful, you will leave it up until July 14. LEO: You will adopt a dog from Cape May County Animal Shelter. You will name her Katy Pawry. VIRGO: You will see that the link to purchase Exit Zero Burns Supper tickets is live at exitzero.us. You will buy yours while drinking single malt. LIBRA: You will watch your first Hallmark Christmas movie of the season. It will inspire you to find your Christmas spirit at Winter Wonderland at Congress Hall. SCORPIO: You will walk the route of the West Cape May Christmas Parade in order to scope out your best viewing position. You will then save your position by camping out on Broadway until December 7. SAGITTARIUS: You will get an Ed Sheeran song stuck in your head, and then another, and then another. You will wonder how it’s possible there are so many Ed Sheeran songs. CAPRICORN: You will run into Jason Momoa on the promenade. You will tell him your best Thanksgiving joke: Did you hear the police arrested a turkey for fowl play? AQUARIUS: You will travel to a Brazilian coffee farm. You will pick a lot of beans. PISCES: You will spend the week drinking eggnog. You won’t feel bad about it, because this is a form of egg-ercise.

he Answer Lady invites inquiries from gentle readers on all manner of relationship quandaries, matters of the heart and ethics. If you’d like to send a query, write to info@exitzero. us. Or, simply sit back, enjoy a cup of coffee and contemplate the wisdom herein. Dear Answer Lady Thanksgiving has always meant more than Christmas, especially as our children became adults. My son married a year ago and informed me that our traditions will have to be set aside as he will be celebrating Thanksgiving with his in-laws from now on. I knew this would happen. His wife is very controlling. My wife is devastated. What I need now is advise on how to bring my wife to acceptance and not draw a line in the sand over this because I fear it will backfire. — Leftovers Dear Leftover You are quite right. Your son must come to his own conclusion that his family matters. Pressure from you or your wife will only make matters worse. One wonders what other efforts she has made to isolate him from friends and family. The Answer Lady would also caution
Wise answers to perplexing questions
against having a separate Thanksgiving on Friday, for example. Continue with your traditions but certainly open the door for other opportunities for him to visit, perhaps on his own. Brunch maybe at the Mad Batter or Exit Zero Filling Station might be doable, but at the end of the day, it is your son who must sort this out. All you and your wife can do is wait and hope. Dear Answer Lady I am already stressing about what to buy my girlfriend for Christmas. We’ve been going
together for about six months and things are going swell. That is why this is just a torturous, no-win decision for me. I don’t want to rock the boat by doing the wrong thing. If I don’t spend enough, she’ll think I’m cheap or don’t care. If I spend too much, she’ll think an engagement ring is around the corner. Surely you must have a solution for this. I can’t be the only one facing this dilemma. — Undecided Dear Undecided Do you know what Christmas is all about? Holy tone deaf! Here’s a helpful hint — learn enough about her to figure out what she would like. Does she love music, if so what kind? Good Scents has a huge selection. Does she read? If so, what? Cape Atlantic Book Company has a huge selection and can order anything. What does she like to wear? Cash and Clive, Red Oak, Lace Silhouettes, Galvanic, Caroline Boutique and Victorious will be happy to help. Don’t you dare buy her a gift certificate. The fear-based life is no life at all. Step up, man. All it takes is some quiet observation and the idea that you care for this person. With those thoughts in mind, you cannot do the wrong thing.

agreed to help him with it. SECOND CHANCES: It was standing room only for a hearing on a bond ordinance appropriating $2 million in shared costs for the renovation of Franklin Street School and its conversion to a library which was approved in a 4-1 vote, councilmember Stacy Sheehan being the sole dissenter. $6 million, to be shared by the county and the Cape May County Library System, each contributing one-third of the tab. DEEP BACKGROUND: In 2002 the Center for Community Arts (CCA) leased the Franklin Street School from the city for a nominal amount of money with the intention of renovating it, but along came 2008’s economic crash and the effort floundered. Although some repairs have been made to stop the deterioration, money to make the building ready for occupancy was not forthcoming. And then along came Cape May County and the library system to save the day. But four votes are needed to float a bond. Councilmembers Zack Mullock and Sheehan previously voted against moving the bond ordinance forward. Mullock said there was nothing in writing guaranteeing that the county and the county library system money would be in place. Those papers have subsequently been approved and the freshman councilmember said he had no further objections, but did have a
Page 66 concern regarding the use and disposition of the current library on Ocean Street. There are no plans, that we know of, regarding its future. Deputy Mayor Tricia Hendricks said the fact that the county and the library systems are chipping in does mean that the sale of the current library is not necessary to fund the project. Sheehan stuck to her guns as the lone dissenting vote. She said her constituents are against the move. She is in favor of renovating the Franklin Street School, but only as a community center. She also said the hours would be restricted since it would be a county-run library and would be closed on Sundays and most nights and therefore, not as accessible as a community center. STAR POWER: The room looked like a who’s who of politicians and VIPs of the African American community. Freeholder Director Jerry Thornton was on hand and hung in for the two-hour session leading up to the vote. In urging council to vote for the project, Thornton said, “I’ve worked on a lot of projects over the years. This is probably the best project in the county.” He said the renovation is “very important to us as a county but we’re also looking at West Cape May and Cape May Point.” He said it a was not only a chance to partner with city and the county library system but was also a chance to preserve the “historical value of the Franklin Street School and recognition of the African American community.” Lower Township Mayor and Assemblyman-elect Erik Simonsen spoke in favor of the project. Simonsen is not only an educator but also a member of neighboring Macedonia Baptist Church. “Sometimes you get one shot,” he said referring to saving the historic Franklin Street School, “and this might be it.” Assemblyman-elect Antwan McClellan said the saving of the Franklin Street School is “not just an acceptance of African-American history, it is an acceptance of our history.” Former CCA Executive Director Bernadette Matthews said, “This is an opportunity to right a wrong that was done when this building was built to separate black children from white children.” Longtime Cape May resident and founding CCA member Emily Dempsey attended the Franklin Street School and has been a tireless advocate for its preservation. She said, “It’s incredible. You take something that started off as a negative with segregation and you turn it into this beautiful idea of a library and community building.” Dr Keith Lafferty, chairman of Cape May Housing Authority
EXIT ZERO
and Cape May CARES, noted that there are 56 children currently living in the housing district who are in need of an ungraded library. “Diversity,” he said, “is the reason we need this library. Education is the ticket out.” FUZZY AND WARM: Whether you were for the project or not, it was the first time in a long time that absolute joy broke out in council chambers following the passage of an ordinance. SON OF A BEACH: Council passed a rate hike for beachgoers. The vote garnered four ayes and one abstention from Mullock, whose family owns the Chalfonte Hotel, which would be affected by the newly formed commercial beach tag fee. The bottom line: Seasonal beach tags will go from $28 to $30. Weekly beach goers’ tags will go from $18 to $20. Three-day tags will get the highest hike, going from $12 to $15. Daily tags will remain at $6. The ordinance also creates a new beach tag for hotel and accommodation owners. Currently beach tags are non-transferable, and much has been made — particularly by the Cape May Taxpayers Association (CMTPA) — that some hotels were getting away with buying a bulk of seasonal beach tags and offering them to their guests as an amenity. That cheated the city out of revenue and was against the law. Now you can share your beach tag with your friends and family members... as though you didn’t before. And that’s the problem. The ordinance was practically unenforceable, which has been a real poke in the ribs when it comes to hotels that refused to comply. BUT the accommodations beach tag will now cost $50 per tag. Bonus — they can put
November 28, 2019 their logo on the beach tag. LOOP THE LOOP? Members of the CMTPA spoke in favor of the ordinance but also wanting it raised more. Specifically, that the daily rate be raised $2 and the commercial rate go from $50 to $100. CMTPA member Jules Rauch pointed out that there really is nothing to stop hoteliers from buying the $30 beach tag and passing that along, rather than paying for the $50 one. City Solicitor Frank Corrado agreed that it is a loophole which will have to be closed. CMTPA spokesman Bill Seeger suggested that the penalty for such an abuse could be suspension of their mercantile license. The solicitor agreed. Council agreed to pass the ordinance with two amendment. The first, calls for an annual review of the beach tag fees. The second includes a penalty section for commercial establishments which might be tempted to buy $30 tags instead of the $50. If caught cheating, the hotel or B&B would have their mercantile license suspended or revoked. So there! FUN FACT: The city takes in $400,00 in seasonal beach tag sales in December alone. Merry Christmas!! SAVING THE ENVIRONMENT – ONE PLASTIC BAG AT A TIME: Council tabled second reading on an ordinance designed to ban the use of plastic bags, straws and the like at the request of Corrado, who said he needs more time to tweak. ABOUT THOSE MARATHONS MEETINGS Councilmember Mullock commented on the length of the meetings (this one went in excess of four hours) and the inclination to abbreviate discussion on ordinances like the beach tags, a la Corrado’s comment that, “We could discuss scenarios all night” with regard to cheating the system. Mullock suggested that one way to keep the meetings tighter was to think about limiting the number of times individual members of the public can come up the podium. Some speakers, not all of them residents, approach council three to five times on a regular basis. “It’s 9:15,” said Mullock, “ and this [the beach tag ordinance before council] is one of the highest income generators for the city. We have to give this the dedicated time it requires for discussion. If someone wants to come up to the podium 10 different times, we have to have a little control over that. Just like you, I want to go home.” NOTE TO CITY SOLICITOR CORRADO: You know that mic you never like to use? Sometimes it’s on when you don’t realize it and WE CAN HEAR YOU.

Dispatches from the nation’s birdwatching capital… by Seymore Thanu
nless you have been in a coma for the last week or so, you have certainly noted that Cape May’s bushes and lawns have been vibrating with birds. Yes, migration is still ongoing and early November is the peak migratory period for a common boreal forest breeder, the Yellow-rumped Warbler. These effervescent grayish sprites are active feeders that pluck prey from branches, sally out to snap insects out of the air, forage on the ground for cold numbed insects and even pluck and consume bayberry. This versatility even gives Yellow-rumps, formerly called Myrtle Warblers, the latitude to winter in Cape May while most members of the family, the Parulidae, have retreated to the West Indies or Central America.. Easily identified by their bright yellow rumps and flat, emphatic “chip” call, one of the best places to see yellow-rumps is along the dune crossovers at the South Cape May Meadow, but frankly you passed hundredweights of birds to reach this junction. Despite dire observations concerning
North America’s declining bird numbers, Yellow-rumps remain common to abundant. This is something to savor and celebrate, so why not do so? There are few guarantees in life but if you attend a Monday morning bird walk in South Cape May, I can close to promise that a Yellow-rumped Warbler is in your future. If you are not an early riser, the cedars flanking the Hawk Watch Platform at Cape May Point State Park, fairly swarm with the birds.
Another late season migrant is Eastern Bluebird, whose charming form and churring call is part of the American Robin onslaught. Following the passage of a cold front and following a night of northwest winds, thousands of robins are winging south. There have been times when millions of robins have been counted in a single morning. Once, in 1976, the massed birds sitting on Sunset Boulevard, came close to stopping traffic. Robins, too, winter here in great numbers. Roosting in the white cedar stands and fox tail, they fan out during the day to feast upon holly berries and poison ivy. But if there is a mid-winter thaw, robins can be counted upon to revert to their classic earthworm catching ways. Pop Quiz. Do robins walk or hop across yards? If you said “walk,” you’re right. If you said “hop,” you’re right, too. It depends upon the height of the grass. So hop (or walk) on over to the Hawk Watch platform and get an eyeful of what the season has to offer.

Enrich Your Life... Adopt An Animal
Three beautiful dogs from the Cape May County Animal Shelter and Adoption Center... call 465-8923
DIEGO wears a perpetual smile and loves to be with people. His owner was unable to keep him, and Diego is making the best of his stay at the shelter by greeting everyone with his typical enthusiasm. Diego would be the perfect companion for an active adult family- one that would appreciate his happy disposition. Adopt this cutie today!
CHEWY arrived at the shelter as a stray, but spent several days in a home with other dogs and kids. He was friendly and playful in the household. It is estimated that Chewy is less than two years old and could do well with another dog and older kids. Chewy is very playful and loving towards people and with some training, could be a wonderful pet!
LYLA is a shy seven year old girl whose family was unable to care for her, so she arrived at the shelter confused and scared. Her sad eyes follow you as you pass her kennel. Lyla is reserved in the yard, but walks well on a leash and seems to enjoy that experience. Once she is comfortable with you, she elicits attention and loves to be petted. Adopt this sweet girl today!

BRANDY had a bit of a rough life so far. She used to live outside and then she had babies. Someone brought her into the shelter so her babies could be safe and get adopted. Brandy had to have surgery on her eye do to allergies. But don’t worry, Brandy’s eye doesn’t bother her anymore, it just looks a little different. Adopt this poor angel today!
GABBY & PORK CHOP are mother and son who lived happily together in a house their whole lives, until unfortunately their owner passed away. They miss her, and miss having a home. NENA used to have a family, but they were not allowed to keep her at their rental home. Nena is a calm and quiet girl who doesn’t need much, just plenty of food and water and a warm place to sleep. “In a recent sale transaction, the lot we were buying had an extended contract time due to the State of N.J. D.E.P. approval time. The sales contract had to be amended and resigned three times. Mr. Connolly was always ahead of the contract due dates and the sale was closed after 18 months of the state approval process. The success of the sale was due to Ed’s non-stop persistence.” - bill
