Nick Fedoroff Christmas Celebration P20-33

Brinch With The Grinch At EZ Filling Station P34-40

The folks at Gusto Brewing Company — slogan, “Keep it Small and Keep it Weird” — celebrated their first birthday last week in their North Cape May HQ. Every six weeks, Gusto selects a local non-profit. They then host a fundraising party in their Tasting Room, following that up by donating six weeks of proceeds from limited-edition merchandise. So, as well as keeping it small and weird, they’re also keeping it kind! Happy birthday to the people at Gusto, and a very happy holiday season and a fabulous 2020 to all of you from all of us at EZ (we’re also small and kinda weird, to tell the truth). SOME INTERESTING CAPE MAY TRIVIA AND FUN FACTS

Weird Sea Creature

Did You Know?

What We’re Reading

The Atlantic wolffish — aka the seawolf — can grow up to five feet and weigh 40 pounds. It’s named for its fang-like teeth that it uses to eat spiny sea urchins, crabs and other hard-shelled things. The coolest thing about it? The wolffish produces a natural antifreeze, which allows it to endure extremely cold water. Sadly, because of overfishing, wolffish numbers have seriously declined in recent years.

You may know Congress Hall as the place Tina Fey and Oprah have enjoyed breakfast, and Anne Hathaway has enjoyed cocktails, but it’s also the oldest seaside hotel in America. Built in 1816 by Thomas Hughes, it was so big locals thought it unviable, and they called it Tommy’s Folly. Twelve years later, the building was renamed Congress Hall because of Hughes’s election to Congress. Since then, four presidents have stayed here, including Benjamin Harrison who turned the building into his Summer White House. The hotel, which burned down twice, is now a hub of community events centered on simple American pleasures.

Daisy Jones & the Six Taylor Jenkins Reid Set in the late 70s and inspired by Fleetwood Mac, this novel tells the story of a fictional band that splits on the final night of its tour. It’s great for fans of music and also just great storytelling.

Ramblings From The Editor

Ideas, idle gossip and occasionally important odds ’n’ ends... by Jack Wright

S

ince most of you will be laying your mittens on this issue on Christmas Eve, I thought it would be appropriate to share a few things that I would like from Santa — other than the obvious things like, you know, peace on earth and the hope that the rising oceans won’t totally devour us any time soon. First of all, I would like for Cape May city council to agree on the location of a new public safety building, aka police and fire stations. I have not delved into the details of this because I no longer have the time to attend city council meetings. But the divisions on council that always existed under the reign of the dark lord, aka the former mayor, remain, and the result is a long delay to a muchneeded facility. This wish is a bit of a stretch, but I guess stranger things have happened. I would also like someone from the county to realize that the giant pothole on the junction of Sunset Boulevard and Broadway is a danger to cyclists and bad for the health of automobiles. Sticking with the county, I would also like them to get some move-

ment on the long-planned traffic circle for Wilbraham Park. It’s only been a decade or so. Staying with traffic, I would like cyclists to stop risking their lives by riding on West Perry Street and also to stop choosing August in Cape May as the first time they’ve ridden a bike in, say, 30 years — have you seen how some of those parents wobble along Broadway, children in tow? Scary. I would like more second-home owners in Cape May to decorate their homes with Christmas lights even if they don’t come here

in December (though why don’t they? Such a beautiful time of year here). Finally (for now), I would like you to buy tickets to the 16th annual Exit Zero Burns Supper, especially if you have never been before. Why? Because there is no other event in Cape May quite like it. On Saturday, January 25, I’ll be hosting 400 people at Convention Hall for what has become one of the biggest celebrations of poet Robert Burns in the world. Who he? A famous Scots poet from the 18th century whose birthday is celebrated all over the world (and I really do mean that). At our event, there will be great Celtic music from Pittsburgh’s the Bastard Bearded Irishmen, our own Bastard Sons of Captain Mey along with the talented pipers and drummers of the Nae Breeks band. Tickets for all that entertainment AND a three-course meal cost $45. Buy them online at ezstore.us, or call 609-770-8479. Please note, the next Exit Zero will be published February 6. In the meantime, Merry Christmas, Happy Hanukkah and Happy New Year!

very week, the Exit Zero crew goes for lunch (or dinner or, maybe even on occasion, breakfast) at one of Cape May’s excellent dining establishments. Then we give you the skinny on what we ate, what we talked about (or some of what we talked about), who spat their drink from laughing too hard, who served us, who we bumped into and, you know, the general vibe. The place: George’s Place on Beach Avenue, which has been in operation for half a century. (There’s also a second location in Cape May Court House.) The background: This hot spot is part of the Kara Restaurant Group, run by brothers Yianni and Pete Karapanagiotis. Also part of the group? Shamone and YB in Cape May and Scola in Cape May Court House. The celebrity shout-out: Guy Fieri filmed an episode of The Food Network’s Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives here. “At Geoge’s Place,” he said, “you get a bit of Greek with every dish, whether it’s breakfast, lunch or dinner.” The vibe: Clean, casual and sunny. The server: The lovely Kate Robbins. She’s also the owner of Muddy Paws, the self-service dog wash and boutique in North Cape May. (The Exit Zero mutts have been here several times because trying to bathe Rudytoo at home is traumatic for everyone involved.) Fun fact: Kate is also a master of Halloween costumes. People are STILL talking about her Avatar getup from last October. The conversation: According to Kate and fellow server Deb, a video of Jack Wright singing at the recent Exit Zero Filling Station Christmas party has been making the rounds on social media. He can never run for president. The food: We ordered an Exit Zero staff favorite, the havarti sandwich, all around. It comes with grilled chicken, tomato, fresh basil pesto and honey. And the bread? Buttery and delicious. We opted for hearty side salads (they come with chickpeas) instead of fries. And we left happy and satisfied. We’re also big fans of the lemon chicken Greek salad, FYI. The downlow: George’s is known for its consistency. Reliably good food, every time! And that’s not easy to do. The history: George’s Place celebrated its 50th anniversary last year — the eatery was founded in 1968 by George Tsiartsionis, who’s still a well-known figure around town. His son Mikey owns the Chill smoothie joint next door.

Undertow

I

Terry O’Brien’s legendary column... social satire, shameless plugs — and general self-indulgence

ate at a restaurant that had two restrooms. I chose the one most recently used and that has made me feel all the regret… Welcome to the Super Sappy End of the Year edition of The Undertow. You’ll laugh! You’ll cry! You’ll probably read it while you’re pooping! But before we get all misty, let’s touch on last Tuesday and our final EZFS Open Mic of the year (Christmas Eve day show and New Year’s Eve are both O’Brien & Joyce acoustic jawns). I knew it was going to be fun when I showed up and Ginny Murray was already at the bar with partner-in-crime Ginny Craven in tow. Hugh Murray eventually wandered in and, I don’t know about you, but this felt like the first scene in The Irishman 2 to me. Murray Christmas! It was a well-attended show, opened by Geoff Moran and Seth Johnson (appreciated the R.E.M. opener, Geoff). Thom Piecara and Dave Rowan (Innuenduo), nailed some Christmas and soft-jazz-pop tunes. And Maddie Hogan surprised us with a lovely set of seasonal tunes and, apparently, passed her

cold on to Tim Joyce, who was really pleasant this weekend, so thanks for that. All in all a fun evening. Thanks to all the artists who dropped in over the last month or so. Hopefully the EZFSOM will continue into January (even though winter Tuesdays are a tough draw) but the room saw a lot of great music in a short period of time. Rock & Roll!!! Wednesday night was the EZFS staff Christmas party (which featured the final, final, FINAL Terry O’ke show EVER so Cathrine please stop volunteering me to run karaoke shows kthxbye) which was a lot of fun.

However, about a dozen “Best Employee” awards were given out, of which I received none. So if you’re reading this, congratulations; you fished it out of the dumpster behind Wawa. My wife recently asked if I would mind if she went back to her maiden name, Fiorentino. Of course not, I said. Shortly after, I noticed she no longer wears her wedding ring. “I have to get it re-sized,” she said. Uh-huh. It’s possible she’s telling the truth. It’s also possible I’m very slowly being divorced. This would be a bummer, though having access to 50% of my money would be a pleasant change. So… how to wrap-up what was a pretty eventful 2019? It was a pretty remarkable year, lots of changes, lots of sames, one hell of a lot of music. That sounds like starting point... Band of the Year: 2019 began, as it has since 2012, with my Beatles tribute, Love Me Dudes, playing MLK & President’s Day Sundays at Carney’s, then the Ugly Mug (Cabanas, our regular home, was down for renovations). We would go on to play more

Beatles shows in 2019 than the previous seven years combined. I owe Terry Dougherty, Al Olivero, Sue Polcer, Herb Moore and Rachel Husta a debt of gratitude than cannot be repaid. Band of the Year II: My Billy Joel tribute, The Strangers, had a banner year, as well, playing more shows than ever. Regular readers know The Beatles are my heart, but Billy is my soul. And it was an absolute thrill to play his hits and deep cuts with Al Olivero (again), Sue Polcer (again), Steve Kyle, Walter Sapsai, Jr and Dave Landis. We weren’t always perfect, but we were always fun. Thank you. Band of the Year III: By 2019 I had sort of come to be known as “the Cape May tribute guy,” which was fine with me. And after a phone call from Carney’s, The Terry O’Brien Band was born. This band, this band, was going to break new ground in paying tribute to four acts in one show; Beatles, Billy Joel, Bruce Springsteen and Prince. This was a dream project and the thrill of leading a packed bar through “Born to Run” will be difficult to top. Al Olivero (again), Sue Polcer (again), Rachel Husta (again), Dr David Bee and Richard Lewis were easy to stand in front of. And props to Carney’s for sharing the vision. Hardest Decision of My Life (2019 Edition): None of these bands will be returning in 2020. At least, not with me at the helm. My ears started ringing around 2011 in Ghost Ship (I was manager of this haunted house 2010-2014). It was annoying, but not worrisome. Sometimes it even went away. The last few years, as a full-time musician, the ringing increased. Midway through 2019, playing more full band shows than ever, it tripled. Along with that came signs of overall hearing loss, lots of “Huh?”, “What?”, “Pardon?” The TV volume slowly creeping up. The usual. In November, I made the decision to step down. I know it was the right thing to do. It also broke my heart. Musicians of the Decade: A

December 26, 2019 lot of good players have passed through my orbit the last eight years, and they are all appreciated, but none have earned my love and respect more than Terry Dougherty and Al Olivero, the only eight-year members of Love Me Dudes. If I ever get back in the (much quieter) band business, they’re my first two calls. (And, if you can spare one, send a good thought up for Terry, who is facing some health challenges. With stoic good humor, as ever.) And just like that, I’m about out of space and only got to 10% of the stuff I wanted to talk about. Lastly, and as ever, I’m never really sure if Undertow is returning. Does Exit Zero want it back? Does anyone still read it? Do I feel like writing it? I know it doesn’t seem like much, but this stupid little column eats up a chunk of my free time every week. Not a complaint, just an observation. And it weighs heavier every year. Spend hours at the computer or at the movies with my boys? No one on their death bed has ever said, “I wish I spent more time at work…” You can see how I’m vexed. If this is indeed the end, I’d like to thank you for putting up with me for the last 16 years. Whether you started reading me in 2003 or last week, we are pack. Sure, I’ve made fun of a lot of you… that means I like you! Sure, I’ve angered a lot of you… but 99% of it was unintentional (.05% was absolutely intentional, the other .05% was something I wrote about Animal Outreach a few years back that was universally hated). Like the rest of you, I know not what the future brings (how pretentious was that), but if I’m able to share it with you I will do so gladly. I’m writing this a couple days before it goes to press, so it’s possible I’m already dead and this is my epitaph. If I have shuffled off this mortal coil by the time you read this, promise me you’ll do one thing… Delete my browser history. ’Til next time, don’t get caught in The Undertow.

The Old Fogey

W

Ah, those good old Cape May days... by Jackson D’Catur

hat a Christmas party it was, my friends! Why, even as I dictate this, live on December 24, to yon brutish Scotch editor, through the telephone to the printing works, where from his frantic screams of “haud the front page, or ah’ll bash yer heids in!” are competing with the thunder of the press, I can see one of my dear readers (or at least your bottom half, sans clothes) protruding from the chimney in the library fireplace. I am of two minds as to whether or not to light the fire, I must say. You will be pleased to know, those of you who survived the excess of fine wine, surplus of rich fowl, and the plenitude of what I had presumed was opium in that pipe we found in the basement (but turned out to be oregano), not to mention the cruel novelty of the D’Catur Crackers (eight from 10 of them contained a solid gold trinket worth as much as an automobile, one a 300-carat diamond, another a rose thorn tipped with poison from the skin of an Amazonian tree frog) that you have a few days in which to recover and prepare for our Hogmanay Slumber Party on December 31.

As you know, we traditionally drink from my special reserve of the Macallan Lalique single malt (not more than a thimble-full for each of you, for that tipple brings out the best and the worst in a man/woman/non-binary, and costs me more than were I to simply whisk you away and have you stripped and painted head to toe in 24-carat gold paint. Which by the way will happen to any person who steals a second sip), sing some maudlin songs, have a little punch-up and by the time The Bells ring, embrace one another and swear teary, undying

love. All the while taking photographs up the kilt of yon same Scotch editor brute, and fainting dead away when we look at the resulting image. And we will do that, I promise. But this year I have something special in mind. Because it is my intent to skip a year or few, as this past one has been altogether too stressful. So we will simply take a break, to be woken when the world is sane again, and free from crazy old men (present company excluded). As the clock ticks the final second of 2019 away, we will descend to the basement, to 300 identical glass capsules, all of which will be open and ready. We will lie down, and the lids will ease closed, and we will slumber, perchance to dream. I told my faithless manservant Kitchener to set the “suspended animation” timer to 10 years, or maybe 100. He has never been too good with the decimal point. So it might in fact be 1,000. Either way I am sure it will be nothing short of a splendid adventure. So long as nothing ridiculous occurs, such as the oceans rising ten feet, we will be fine!

here can you find fish scales in Cape May? Look beyond the end of your fishing line or the counter of your favorite fish market. Fish scales and other decorative shingle shapes are an important element of Victorian architecture, and that knowledge gives you an edge in the Family Treasure Hunt. Victorian architecture is big and audacious, favoring showy elements over simple lines. The broad term “Victorian” includes Gothic revival, Italianate, Second Empire, Queen Anne and more. The Victorian house tends to feature a large porch, extensive decorative trim, textured shingles, towers with a steep roof like a witch’s hat — hint — and complex windows. Generally, the style’s popularity aligns with the period of Victoria’s reign, 1837 to 1901, when fashions in homes, as in clothing, valued beauty over practicality. The same people who embraced hoop skirts and top hats embraced homes with ornate detail to impress the neighbors. Just as a dress with 100 buttons demonstrated that the household could afford a lady’s maid,

a home’s complex paint schemes and glasswork showed the family could afford a large staff. Eventually, advances in woodworking technology made trim cheaper, so that even middle class homeowners could afford to add gingerbread to their eaves and porches. Fish scale shingles and other fancy styles, like diamond, arrow and octagonal, were a popular finishing element used on gables or other upper sections, particularly of Queen Anne homes. Purists object to their placement in other locations, or placement that sets them so that they stick out from the clapboard. Shingles of the same style should be

painted the same color, and should end at a “pleasing place.” Around the turn of the 20th century, home design shifted to the more practical arts and crafts style, but Victorian elements remain popular, leading to fish scales — gasp! — on modern ranch and split level homes. Test your knowledge of Cape May, and of Victorian architecture, with the Family Treasure Hunt packet from Mid-Atlantic Center for the Arts and Humanities. This activity is a self-guided scavenger hunt of the historic district. Questions include fish scales and witches’ hats, in addition to other trivia, such as where the bell on the mall came from. The packet is probably most entertaining for kids five to nine, but it’s also an opportunity for older kids to help out. You can add personal trivia to the list, with questions about your family’s traditions, like, “Where does grandpa get his silver dollar pancakes?” or “What does grandma always order at the Lobster House?” Pick up the Family Treasure Hunt packet for $5 from the Washington Street Mall Information Booth at Ocean Street.

Inside City Hall

The happenings, arguments and harumphings at Cape May City Hall, by Susan Tischler

proclamation was adopted at the December17 meeting of Cape May City Council, acknowledging the death of Paul Volcker, 92, who served as the Federal Reserve chair from 1979-1987 where he “waged a war on inflation.” Mr. Volcker was born in Cape May in 1927. His father was Cape May’s city manager at the time, but later moved to Teaneck to save the town from looming bankruptcy. Goodbye Mr Young Mayor Chuck Lear thanked City Manager Neil Young for his service over the past three years. Young will step down as City Manager but will continue on as the city’s CFO as of December 31. Who will be the next city manager? TBD but city hall wags tell us Deputy City Manager Jerry Inderwies, Jr is one of the contenders. Déjà Vu All Over Again The Christmas spirit was AWOL at City Hall despite the great decorations. Council ended the year exactly the same way they began it. Acrimoniously and unyielding. Deputy Mayor Tricia Hendrick’s husband, Charlie

Hendricks, spokesman for Concerned Citizens for the Preservation of Sewell Tract, called the outspoken Jules Rauch a “liar.” So, “Jingle Bells all the way,” everybody. It all began with the agenda. Before council gets on it with it, they are given an opportunity to amend the agenda. The Deputy Mayor made a motion to remove Resolution 245-12-2019 which wasn’t even on the agenda the rest of us got. Turns out it was a resolution asking for the appointment of a certain individual to a vacancy on the very powerful Planning Commission. This was a replacement for an unexpired term. The

PATRICIA JACKSON

terms of six Planning Commission members will expire December 31 and will be acted on at Council’s January 2 reorganization meeting. Why Are You Telling Us All This? Because the manner in which the appointments are made has been rubbing the freshmen councilmembers the wrong way since January. In February, Councilmember Zack Mullock introduced a resolution asking that openings on the commissions and advisory committees be posted on the website and that they submit resumes so that the selection process did not look like a good-old-boy/ girl club. Mullock and Councilmember Stacy Sheehan both maintained they were never consulted regarding any of the appointments. That motion went down 3-2 and pretty much started the 3-2 division which has carried over like a bad hangover the rest of the year. Not in with the in crowd? At last week’s meeting Deputy Mayor Hendricks asked that the resolution be removed because she had the formal application of two other

candidates. Mullock’s nominee asked that her resume and app for the Zoning Board be used as her submission for the Planning Commission post, therefore, she did not submit a formal application to the City Clerk this time around. There was a lengthy backand-forth among the lot regarding process and intent. Mayor Lear said, “This is not about a person. It’s about a process.” Because, as it turns out, even though the resolution to advertise openings on the website went down to defeat, since that night, the city has indeed been putting the openings on the website, which the deputy mayor characterized as “a gesture of goodwill.” Mullock shot back that neither he nor Sheehan have ever been consulted when it comes to submitting nominations — most recently the Master Plan Advisory Committee. “This has everything to do with who is submitting names and not anything else,” said Mullock. Regarding the six vacancies which are coming up on the Planning Commission, Mullock, addressing the mayor, said, “I can tell you right now, you’re not going to include either Councilwoman Sheehan or myself regarding these openings.” Mayor Lear countered, “You wanted openness and we’ve gone ahead and advertised” the openings. Mullock punched back with, “If there is absolutely no compromise at this table, we’re going nowhere. We have a serious lack of leadership.” Bottom Line Please. Once the meeting actually did get going, Councilmember Sheehan made a motion requiring the city to advertise on the website any opening on a commission or advisory committee; that anyone interested submit their application to the City Clerk, but that those who express an interest but have not formally submitted an application, be considered as well. The Mayor suggested this be taken up at the next work session and therefore made a motion to continue the discussion. Maybe in addition to a city manager, the city should look to hire a Parliamentarian. The City Solicitor has been serving that role, but perhaps it should a full-time position.

EXIT ZERO The motion to continue took precedence over the resolution motion. That was approved — 3-2. The City Solicitor asked Sheehan if she would withdraw her motion regarding committee/commission openings until next month, but she said, she wanted the vote taken. More nasty wrangling went back and forth but we have Christmas cookies to bake, so suffice it to say — Sheehan’s motion went down in a 3-2 vote. To be continued. Did ANYTHING Get Accomplished? Yes. City Council passed a series of resolutions approving contracts to begin reconstruction of Soldiers and Sailors Memorial Park at Gurney and Columbia avenues. The total price of the project is close to $700,000 with a $100,000 contribution from private sources – namely the Fund for Cape May. Work will begin immediately. The project is expected to be completed before Memorial Day weekend. And all approved in 5-0 vote. So there. Miracles do happen. You Owe Me In the public portion of the meeting, resident and Cape May Taxpayers Association(CMTP) member Jules Rauch complained about the fact that Concerned Citizens for the Preservation of Sewell Tract has asked the City of Cape May to reimburse them for legal fees incurred while trying to fight the Sewell Tract development project, which the city has also opposed over the decades — and we do mean decades. The group is comprised of residents who live on the east end of Cape May near the 100-acre tract. Background Please Thomas Brodesser and Philip Robinson, developers of Village Green, bought the land in 1951. In 1990 the land was conveyed to East Cape May Associates, also owned by Brodesser and Robinson. They intended to develop the land into a mixed-use housing and open space project but got into a dispute with the Department of Environmental Protection since the land sits on wetlands. The landowner maintained the state was depriving them of profit. Well, you get the idea. In 2014 DEP and the developers reached a compromise in which 20% of the land would be housing and the rest left as open space. Concerned Citizens then stepped in arguing that the DEP deal disregarded environmental protocol and was illegal. The city is not involved in any such litigation. Get to the point please. Rauch maintains that reimbursing the Concerned Citizens is neither “appropriate nor legal… and must be denied.” Charlie Hendricks, president of the Concerned Citizens group, took umbrage with Rauch’s remarks, stating, “Everything he said was flat out wrong.” He said the organization is comprised of about 100

December 26, 2019 citizens who have donated over the past five years more than $400,000 in an effort to fight the state’s proposed deal with East Cape May Associates and to protect the tract from “environmental damage with no economic advantage” to themselves. “Our success is your success,” he said to Council and took further umbrage with other remarks Rauch made in a letter to the editor, calling him an “out and out liar.” The Mayor blissfully intervened and we moved on. So to speak. List of Grievances Former Vice Chair of the Public Safety Building Advisory Committee (PSB) Barney Dougherty came before Council to protest his treatment at a recent PSB committee meeting maintaining his First Amendment rights had been thwarted when he was not permitted to speak. Lenore McGann came before Council to protest once again the moving of the library — named for her mother, Emma Elwell, Cape May’s former librarian. McGann has been vocal about the city’s recent approval to move the library to the historic Franklin Street School. The deal, brokered with the county and the county library association, will pay for the move and the renovation of the once segregated school. Laurie Buck came before council to complain once again about the hot dog vendor who just loves their Beach Avenue location. She and he husband, the Honorable Carl Buck III, have protested the vendors continued presence at that spot especially, they maintain, since there are seven other spots. Jules Rauch came before Council, once again, imploring the body to raise the Room Occupancy Tax from two percent to three percent. He asserted that it would garner the city an additional $700,000 and hurt no one except “the visitors.” You know, those people who make the economic wheels in the city turn and who have already incurred double parking rates along the Washington Street Mall and increased beach tag fees. Those people. Happy Trails, y’all, until we do it all again in February.

The Answer Lady

T

he Answer Lady invites inquiries from gentle readers on all manner of relationship quandaries, matters of the heart and ethics. If you’d like to send a query, write to info@exitzero. us. Or, simply sit back, enjoy a cup of coffee and contemplate the wisdom herein. Dear Answer Lady My fiancé and I planned a cruise in January which we booked months ago. Now I come to find out my fiancé’s sister and her moronic husband booked the same cruise. The fact that I have to be confined on a boat for seven days with these two Cling-Ons is enough to make me want to jump overboard. I told my fiancé I am half tempted to cancel it or change the date. Of course, that’s not even possible without losing a lot of money, but it might be worth it. I know these two — they will not leave our side for one minute. What would you do, Answer Lady? — Ship Wrecked Dear Wrecked That’s why they have that Drinks Included package. First off, it’s a ship, not a boat, which means it’s a big place. Make a game of losing the other two. Pretend you’re having an

illicit affair and trying to avoid the private eye chasing you. Yes, The Answer Lady does watch too many Turner Movie Classics. Nevertheless, why let them ruin your vacay? However, here’s an idea: next time try booking a little closer to the departure date and not give them time to piggyback. In the meantime, you need to stop in at the Ugly Mug and have a Fireball. Just one, though — two might make you pugnacious, and we can’t have that. Dear Answer Lady My next-door neighbor has been a pain in

my backside for years. She and her husband have made it clear that they do not share our taste in landscaping. They have a meticulous lawn with pristine gardens. We have three kids and a big dog. Our front lawn looks like a fairway plagued with gophers. They hate fences, as do we — the only thing we do have in common. Instead they put in rose bushes with thick thorns. The husband polishes his Mercedes every Sunday. To spite him, I park the old VW bus in front of their house instead of the driveway. As luck would have it, I caught the husband kissing another woman in a restaurant in another town. I made a point of saying, “Hello.” Now he wants to be my best friend. I liked it better when we were enemies. What now? — Caught Ya Dear Caught Take advantage of the goodwill. It should be enough that you have the upper hand. Move the VW bus back into the driveway. Go to Cape May Winery and pick up a bottle of Isaac Smith Port. Get a fine beemster cheese from Seaside Cheese Company and enjoy the moment of victory.

The Movie Column

Arts columnist Tom Sims previews the Oscars

O

scar comes early next year! The awards are given on February 9. Get ready for a pre-Oscar party that will knock your fashionable socks off! Folks over at the Exit Zero Filling Station are working on the details — save the date. Here are my top films that may (or should) receive an Oscar nomination. You read the review here last week, and I urge you to see Tom Hanks as Mr Rogers in A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood. It is the kind of movie that the Academy enjoys launching into a top spot at its award ceremony. Not only does it center on a kind and wonderful man, but Fred Rogers was an entertainment icon. Hollywood loves its entertainment icons. Will the Academy show love for historic icons as well? In the film Harriet, there are many reasons to celebrate this legendary figure. There are also many reasons to celebrate its lead actress, Cynthia Erivo. She has already won an Emmy, Grammy, and Tony. Will Oscar be next? The film weaves

the disgrace of slavery with the hope that we have all become more enlightened. More importantly, it focuses our attention on a person who suffered not only for the time captured in the movie but long afterwards. There are a few films that I really loved, but I admit they may not receive a nod. These include Knives Out, the star-studded whodunit that has everyone taking. It is a fantastic mystery with style and grits. It makes very few missteps as it takes you on a fantastic ride. Oscar worthy? I guess the Academy

will figure that out. But I certainly thought it was worth every minute of watching it. Could The Farewell get a nomination? The film was a deep relationship movie with an impressive and fashionable cast. It certainly brought you into a multi-cultural experience that defined what it means to be family regardless of borders. Of course, in the next few weeks there will be a flood of films that will set the bar even higher for nominations. These include Richard Jewell, a biopic film from Clint Eastwood. Also expect the new Star Wars installment to get some affirmation of its art direction if nothing else. Lastly, did you see Cats? Can you... for me? It’s not getting much praise, but will Oscar put it out on the stoop? Sorry for the bad pun — it was the best I could cough up. Ouch. Save the date: February 9. The time will be early evening. We’ll watch the pageantry of humanity on the red carpet at the Exit Zero Filling Station. Who’s wearing who? Well, throw something on and find out. Look for details on Exit Zero Facebook page.

Dispatches from the nation’s birdwatching capital… by Seymore Thanu

ou’re right, it’s December. The autumn hawk count is finished. But is migration? Actually, no. Hawks will continue to migrate through December. The official count September 1 through November was designated to catch the peak of fall migration, not all of it. Given the passage of a cold front and/or a big dump of snow over New York and New England, Ma Nature will send a new wave of migrants our way. Late season migrants to be sure, no Broad-winged Hawks or Osprey in this last migratory gasp. But Red-tailed Hawks, Red-shouldereds, harriers and eagles may be depended upon to show. Take December 3, northwest winds 10-15mph, no cloud cover, but 10 Redtaileds, one adult Red-shouldered, two Cooper’s Hawks, one Sharp-shinned, one Sharp-shinned and one Merlin were tallied in just two hours of scanning. The adult Bald Eagle that was terrorizing the ducks on Bunker Pond seemed like a local. These birds, while not accounted among the 25,001 Official Tally ,were entertaining enough and

I had them pretty much to myself. Likewise the 300 or so Tree Swallows and the host of waterfowl, including a dozen or so Hooded Merganser. So just because the official counter has gone home to thaw out, doesn’t mean you should hang up your binoculars for the season. Heck, I’ve counted over one hundred migrating hawks in a scan in late December. Late season hawk watchers might also be treated to some of our rarest raptor migrants, Golden Eagle, Roughlegged Hawk and Northern Goshawk.

Realize, too, that Gyrfalcon has never been tallied from the platform. These Arctic falcons rarely get this far south but they are mostly pelagic and nomadic in winter. But even if all you see are wintering songbirds like Yellow-rumped Warbler, Song Sparrow and Northern Cardinal, it still beats sitting at home watching reruns of I Dream of Jeanie and Gilligan’s Island. Get out there. Walk the trails at Cape May Point State Park or brave the wind on the beach between Cape May and Cape May Point. The stretch will be enlivened by Herring Gulls and maybe a flock of Snow Buntings. But if you spot a large grown, gray or white falcon on the beach, report your sighting to Cape May Bird Observatory. Snowy Owl? Sure, possible. Look for it on the stretch of beach where the gulls are not and be aware that juvenile Snowy Owls are like a small, soot-covered snowman. In January, it’s possible to get a late push of Common Redpoll. If these tiny finches run out of food farther north, they head south, festooning beach grass and birch catkins.

Low Inventory = Sellers’ Market! Thinking of listing your property? With the lowest inventory in several years, it’s best to choose a Designated Sellers’ Representative Specialist, like Joseph (Jody) Alessandrine, SRS. WHAT JODY’S PAST SELLERS SAY:

“In all of the numerous real estate transactions, I never remembering appreciating so much a realtor’s service.” — Mark G. “Jody, it was because of you and your willingness to hold open houses, that we sold our house quickly and for top dollar.
