Giving The Gift Of Hope The Family Promise of Cape May County nonprofit works all year to keep homeless families together by providing them with shelter in local houses of worship. They offer meals, the support services necessary to get people back on their feet and, perhaps most importantly, hope. Which is why we were so excited to see their December 1 Christmas party, An Evening of Giving Thanks, was a sell-out at the Washington Inn. Attendees enjoyed hors d’oeuvres, chance baskets and music, all benefitting a great cause. The season of giving, indeed! Right: Maureen, Bonnie, Laurie, Patty. More photos next week. Aleksey Moryakov

SOME INTERESTING CAPE MAY TRIVIA AND FUN FACTS
Weird Sea Creature
Did You Know?
What We’re Reading
The yellow boxfish IS shaped like a box — or at least the baby version is. It’s a peaceful creature, but if it gets uberstressed, it may secrete a super deadly toxin that will kill everything in its tank — including, possibly, itself. These slow-moving guys like hiding, eating algae — and hiding? Claim to fame: Mercedes once designed a bionic car based on the shape of a boxfish.
Following World War II, local surfing pioneer Bob Steger turned his father’s bathhouse property (where beachgoers changed in and out of bathing costumes) into the island’s first surf shop, Steger’s Surf n Sun, which he ran with wife Betty. While the store closed nearly 30 years ago, locals still reminisce about its friendly service and the aroma of suntan lotion and neoprene wetsuits. Now, the family — which has operated the iconic Steger Beach Service business in Cape May since the 1930s — also operates a paddleboard business at Utsch’s Marina and a store in West End Garage.
The Water Dancer By Ta-Nehisi Coates About a boy with an exceptional gift and the will to survive an atrocious time, this novel is a potent Oprah pick — so you know it’s got to be good.

Ramblings From The Editor

Ideas, idle gossip and occasionally important odds ’n’ ends... by Jack Wright
he sky will be a different color (black compared with blue), the air temperature will be about 50 degrees cooler (38 compared with, say, 88) and, as a result, people will be wearing different clothes (beanie hats instead of baseball caps, overcoats instead of T-shirts). But one thing about this coming weekend that WILL be similar to July? The crowds. Attracted by festivities that have transformed Cape May into one of the must-see Christmas attractions on the East Coast, the masses will rival those of midsummer in America’s Original Seaside Resort. It all kicks off this Friday, when there are THREE tree-lighting ceremonies, all at different times, so you can do a tree crawl! The first one is totally bogus, but I’m going to talk about it anyway. Why? Because it’s the FIRST ANNUAL TREE-LIGHTING AT EXIT ZERO! That’s why. Yes, you can appreciate the sheer beauty of ceremonies at majestic Congress Hall and the beautiful bandstand, but have you ever experienced Christmas Under the Canopy?
That’s right. We are kicking off the festivities on the forecourt of our gas station. Starting at 5:o0pm, we will be offering peppermint/hot cocoa shots plus Bailey’s/coffee shots, along with hot dogs (with Christmas sauce). As a backdrop, It’s A Wonderful Life will be playing on a giant screen. We bought a 12-foot tree from Tuckahoe Nurseries, planted by Rob Lundholm and Ryan Douglass. I’ll be switching on the lights around 5:30-6:00pm in front of what I can only imagine will be a crowd of at least 11 (but come

prove me wrong!) At 7pm on Friday, the second tree-lighting will happen at Rotary Park, followed by the grand poohbah of tree lightings, at Congress Hall around 9pm. If you haven’t been to Congress Hall’s Brown Room on the night of the tree-lighting, you’ll likely not believe how crazy it gets. Congress Hall’s Winter Wonderland, with its cute little train that circles the hotel grounds, classic carousel and tented shopping village is a must-do for anyone who has a festive bone in their body. On Saturday, it’s the 54th West Cape May Christmas Parade, at 5pm. To get you started, come along to the Exit Zero forecourt. We’ll once again be dispensing more hot shots, hot dogs and playing the greatest Christmas movie ever made, while Terry O’Brien, Bill Caterini and Al Olivero play classic rock AND Christmas tunes by the roaring fire inside. Re the parade, Troop 73 scouts will be collecting toilet paper and paper towels for Cape May Community Food Closet, so please bring your paper goods along with you and help out a great cause. See you then!

very week, the Exit Zero crew goes for lunch (or dinner or, maybe even on occasion, breakfast) at one of Cape May’s excellent dining establishments. Then we give you the skinny on what we ate, what we talked about (or some of what we talked about), who spat their drink from laughing too hard, who served us, who we bumped into and, you know, the general vibe. The restaurant: The Mad Batter at the Carroll Villa Hotel on Jackson Street. The legend: It goes like this... the late Harry Kulkowitz, army vet and former owner of a Philadelphia art gallery, won the restaurant and attached hotel in a poker game in 1976. That’s not exactly true, though Harry did conceive of the idea for this Cape May staple during a poker game with then-owner Greg Thoden. Turns out, Greg offered the space to Harry and his partner, Vickie Seitchik, via a $1500 lease. Right from the start, the Mad Batter was a wild success, leading Harry and Vickie to purchase the property. While Harry passed away at the age of 92 in 2017, his son Mark and daughter-in-law Pam Huber carry on his legacy, continuing to run the establishment with their children. The food: The restaurant serves breakfast, lunch and dinner, but it’s breakfast that seems to garner the MOST fanatical following. We opted for the chorizo and scrambled egg burrito made with housemade sausage, green onions, tomato, pepper jack cheese and pico de gallo. We also had the Spicy Beyond Italian Sausage Bowl, made with plant-based sausage. Not because we’re vegetarian, but because it’s just that good. The decor: From the beginning, Harry stayed true to his roots, displaying work from local artists — a tradition the restaurant maintains today. The seats: We had a cozy table on the restaurant’s enclosed front porch, overlooking the bustle of tree-lined Jackson. One of the best spots on the island for sipping green tea (as Jack always does) on a blustery day! The hot tip: You can also get lunch from 8am! We’re thinking about those Gringo Nachos, which are vegan and delicious. The presidential shout-out: In 2014, President Barack Obama called attention to Harry’s army days in a speech marking the 70th anniversary of D-Day. “Think of Harry Kulkowitz, the Jewish son of Russian immigrants, who fudged his age at enlistment so he could join his friends in the fight,” he said. “Don’t worry, Harry, the statute of limitations has expired.”

Terry O’Brien’s legendary column... social satire, shameless plugs — and general self-indulgence
h, December. The month that puts one on the precipice of one year and the cusp of another. A time of reflection and remembrance, of reaping what we’ve sown. A time of hope tinged with just the slightest bit of melancholy. But, most importantly, a time to suddenly realize, shit, I only get two more paychecks before I have to buy an assload of presents. ’Tis the season! NEWSFLASH: This weekend is the big Christmas Under the Canopy as Exit Zero Filling Station. It’s kind of a Christmas Tree Lighting slash Parking Lot Party slash Parade Viewing Dealie, with food, drink and general merriment under the lights of our boutique gas station. (The fumes are free!) Inside, on Friday, we’ll be having Merry O’ke (which is like Terry O’ke which is like karaoke but Christmas) and Saturday will feature the quirky acoustic trio of Bill Caterini, Al Olivero and Terry O’Brien. But generally, it’s going to be kind of awesome, so swing on by. The tree lighting will be done using genuine, authentic Exit Zero
gasoline and is expected to be very bright and very brief, so please be punctual. Big Deal of the Week: The Exit Zero Filling Station Open Mic! Bill Caterini and I have been playing Tuesdays with varying degrees of success. Let me rephrase: the music was successful; Bill is a pro’s pro and always willing to learn the crazy obscure tunes I throw at him. But guest attendance was a little hit-or-miss. So the EZFS Brain Trust threw some ideas around on perking up Tuesdays, yada yada yada, open mic night! And it was a smashing success.
We start at 5 and by 530 it was our busiest Tuesday of the winter, and that was before a litany of Cape May’s finest musicians sauntered in to do their thing. With apologies to MQ Murphy, whose Facebook round-ups of his Mad Batter Sundays are a thing of legend, here’s how it went... Tom and Janet Baxter are regular visitors to EZFS who were in on Saturday for O’Brien & Joyce. Tom got into a Super Guitar Nerd chat with Tim about Fenders and Clarks and Gibsons (whatever, I’m a singer), I told him about the EZFSOM and he looked stricken yet excited. Fast-forward to Tuesday and, not only does he show up to play, he brings a bunch of friends, including songwriter Gordon Vincent and the lovely Becca Jean, to eat drink and make merry. THIS is how you do it, folks; you come play the open mic, you bring some friends, you have dinner and drinks, and voila! You’ve supported a local business in the off-season and the open mic lives another week! I don’t remember what Tom played (I’m not MQ Murphy-level organized yet),

but he played it well and will forever be branded as “First Ever EZFSOM Player.” The first of many, we hope. (Side Note: Tom started out kind of nervous, but by song #3 we had to drag him off the stage with a comically oversized hook.) Jon Katity, my newest, bestest buddy, brought a crew that included his fiance, the effervescent Leslie Weidel (for whom he wrote the excellent “Still Love Me” as Behind the Beautiful. Go find it on YouTube right now), Mad Batter bartender Matt Reeves, who chose not to play despite everyone’s begging (it must be his fetish), and Eliza Lotozo who is Director of External Affairs at the Mid-Atlantic Center for the Arts and Humanities and Executive Director of Our Hearts. Jon played three sets over the course of the evening, covers, originals and, yes, a couple R.E.M. songs with the host, and basically took over the room, displaying the talent that has made him an integral part of the, well, stellar dance band Stellar Mojo. Jon’s been a bud since he started coming to Terry O’ke in 2005 at the age of 11. Local mumblecore maestro Brandon Smith, a Terr y- O ’ B r i e n-S q u e e z e -L e vel-Obsessive fan of Van Morrison, followed with some Van tunes. He also fronts a peppy 90s-grunge-ish originals band, Honey I’m Homeless, which wins my Favorite Band Name Award. Stream or buy their stuff. By this time the restaurant was completely full, every table and both bars, so those smiles that server Tish Roussos and bartender Gordon Sterling were giving you were 50% thrilled to be busy and 50% holy crap I’m super weeded. Fortunately, Steve Wilson appeared out of nowhere, jumped behind the bar and took a little heat off the crew. “What the hell are you doing here?” I asked. “I work here,” he answered. I really need to start reading the EZFS emails… Regardless, Steve is an
December 5, 2019 awesome addition to the coolest staff in town. Bonus points for his wife Catherine. No particular reason She’s just worth bonus points. So, songs are being sung and drinks are being drank and in stroll Jimm Ross and Andy Reeves, two staples of the local music scene. When talent like Jimm and Andy casually stroll in and play killer sets at your inaugural open mic night, you think, “Huh, we just may be onto something.” I’m not one to gush too often about “amazing” nights, but this was really pretty amazing. Can we do it every Tuesday? Who knows. But for one night, at least, the talent was transcendent, the kitchen was hopping, the room was bouncing, John Cooke (whom I still owe a beer Week 8) was posting and the vibe was just great. Please keep coming! The world needs more music. There’s an election coming up, for chrissakes... At one point I was outside catching a smok… getting some air with Jon, Matt, Brandon and Andy as we discussed the afterlife and belief thereof. There’s a joke in there I’m not smart enough to write. How many drunk musicians does it take to prove there’s a god? Jimm Ross and I spoke and came to a very important decision: It’s okay for Ed Dobbs to scale back his playing, it is NOT OKAY for Ed Dobbs to retire. (Ed is one of the five greatest guitar players you’ll ever hear; it was my great privilege to stand three feet to his left for five years in Southwind, and his solo on Garry Moore’s “Still Got the Blues” made me cry years before I became Weepy Old Guy.) Yeesh, I’m almost out of room already and I haven’t even talked about the crazy weekend we had, which included Will Riccio demanding a Squeeze song (one of many reasons I adore him) and Curtis Bashaw singing “American Pie”. ’Til next week, don’t get caught in The Undertow.

The Old Fogey
W
Ah, those good old Cape May days... by Jackson D’Catur
e will say no more about my Thanksgiving party. No name will be put on paper to identify the person who ran naked through town, a turkey jammed on their head. No photographic evidence will appear in these pages showing two luminaries of the city in an embarrassing and physically implausible situation with a visiting celebrity animal. No audio will be broadcast on Cape May’s Pirate Radio station, revealing details and conspirators in the forthcoming coup attempt (to install a monarchy). Let me just say that should anyone be foolish enough to cross me, all of the above might stray into the public domain through the media and a fleet of banner planes. No, let us move on gracefully, with the frank admission that we are not mature enough to have nice things. On which, Christmas is hanging by a thread. We simply cannot have another scandal like last year, with the reindeer. Which are not reindeer, but Wildwooders in costume. Need I remind
you all, NO PETTING THE REINDEER! And since our local Christmas duties are carried out by yours truly, ever since that regrettable incident with Santa’s sleigh and the antiaircraft battery on the roof of the D’Catur Mansion, I am very well placed to deliver either several tons of fine gifts, or a few thousand pounds of ash and cactus spines. So I will be watching all of you. And I don’t just mean watching you in the usual sense, through a score of hidden cameras and motion detectors, plus hundreds of
teddy-cams (trained on adults only — I detest children and care not what they do), for entertainment purposes and VHS tape sales (which seem to have fallen away recently, almost as if there is something new that depraved people are watching). No, this will be an accurate tally of Good and Bad, and since I am very invested in getting into my snug red leather suit trimmed with ermine, and to visit you all with my bulging… what’s the word… a large bag filled to the brim with such goodies as pearl necklaces… ah well, it will come to me. Anyway, since I am keen not to inflict my puns and gifts on you, I will be taking steps to permanently remove repeat offenders from the tally list, so as not to spoil it for everyone. To that end there will be snatch squads of Santa’s Little (Helper) People with stout sacks and cudgels, rounding up offenders in the dead of night. Should you hear the jingle of tiny bell-decorated feet and muffled cries, please stay away from the windows, and on no account open your doors, as the Little People tend to be keen on settling scores.

The Activity Column Catherine Dugan’s guide to getting out there

s the chill of winter sets in, we need our neighbors to keep us warm. It’s all too easy, this time of year, to focus on our problems. Work demands attention, life has carried friends and family members too far from home, and various germs are doing their best to break down our defenses. Like Ebenezer Scrooge, we can lose sight of the important stuff. We need characters like Fezziwig, Fred and Tiny Tim to remind us of our generous spirits. Cape May boasts a number of characters rich in kindness. Think of the local families who host Coasties at their Thanksgiving and Christmas table. Operation Fireside, now in its 35th year, links recruits with hosts during the holidays, both to give them a break from training and to remind them that the public appreciates their service. Family Promise helps provide food and shelter to homeless families. Animal Outreach cares for abandoned and abused animals. C.A.R.A. works to end domestic violence. Grieving families and friends have set up founda-

tions to fund research against cancer, spinal cord injury, and SIDS. These are our neighbors, quietly working, all year round, to make this small slice of the world a better place. They are the reminders that we all need to support the people around us. You probably don’t even know that they do it, until you run into them working at the food pantry or the ReStore Store, but the warmth they create makes Cape May a community. Do your part to add warmth to the town. Bring some soup to the co-worker you passed your cold to. Buy something from a bake sale. Offer, before you’re asked, to buy the raffle tickets your neighbor

sells every year. Pay it forward in the line at a coffee shop. Advertise your renewed spirit — make your own holiday wreath at the Nature Center of Cape May. In a series of workshops from December 5 through December 8 — visit njaudubon.org for times — you can learn to use fresh evergreens and other bits of nature to create a “wreath or garland of distinction.” The Nature Center supplies all materials. If you have something special of your own to add, like something from your garden, or a sparkling bit of ribbon, bring it along. They promise it is easy to learn. Registration is required — call 609-427-3045 to register. The cost is $20 for members, $28 for non-members. And, if you’ve got excess evergreens to donate, please call. Spread Cape May’s welcoming spirit at Hospitality Nights on the Washington Mall, December 12 and 13, 7-9pm. Along with time to make a dent in your shopping list, there will be lights, carolers, refreshments, and — now that you’ve been so nice — a visit from Santa.

ARIES: You will buy your Christmas tree from Cape Island Home and Gardens on Broadway. You will pick the one you think is cute and petite, and you will realize only once you’re off the lot that it’s 14 feet tall and heavier than four Santas after a night of cookie indulgence. TAURUS: You will mark your calendar for Brinch with the Grinch at Exit Zero on December 15. You will begin shopping for a 39.5-foot pole. GEMINI: You will adopt a dog from the Cape May County Animal Shelter. You will name him Bob Scratchit. CANCER: You will finish off the leftover Thanksgiving mashed potatoes. You will set fire to your bathroom scale. LEO: You will be so overcome with Christmas spirit at this weekend’s annual West Cape May Community Christmas parade that you will pick up a stray tuba and join a marching band. You will be arrested for theft of a musical instrument. VIRGO: You will watch your 16th Hallmark Christmas movie of the season. You will feel inspired to write your own screenplay, in which a bad boy from the big city moves to Cape May to fall in love and take up the study of bees and butterflies. LIBRA: You will have a festive night of drinks and appetizers on the Ebbitt Room porch. You will finish too many Virginia cosmopolitans and hallucinate Jason Bateman. SCORPIO: You will order your holiday cake from Out There Coffee. It will ruin you for holiday cakes forever. SAGITTARIUS: You will attend the tree-lighting under the canopy at Exit Zero Filling Station on December 6. You will enjoy drinks mixed with housemade peppermint vodka and marvel at the unpretentious brand of Christmas joy you can discover at a gas station. CAPRICORN: You will take advantage of the Morey’s Piers Holiday Sale. You will stuff a whole lot of stockings with water park passes. AQUARIUS: You will attend an Old Fashioned Christmas Exhibit at the Emlen Physick Estate. You will be so impressed you will try to pay even though admission is free and you forgot your walle. PISCES: You will fall in love under the twinkly lights of the Rotary Park bandstand. Not with a human, but with the horseshoe crab pendant you bought from Whale’s Tale.

The Answer Lady
T
he Answer Lady invites inquiries from gentle readers on all manner of relationship quandaries, matters of the heart and ethics. If you’d like to send a query, write to info@exitzero. us. Or, simply sit back, enjoy a cup of coffee and contemplate the wisdom herein. Dear Answer Lady I am invited to a friend’s house to watch the West Cape May Christmas Parade. I am usually a summer person and never here, so this is my first parade. I’ve heard so many wonderful things about parade night that I always wanted to attend but the opportunity never came up. My question is should I bring anything? If so, what? My ex-girlfriend always criticized me for showing up at places emptyhanded. I don’t want to be that guy, so please advise. — Parade Bound Dear Bound Not to be clichéd, but it really IS the thought that counts. A bottle of wine is always good or whatever adult beverage they like. If you know you are going to drink a six-pack, then bring a six-pack in addition to the hostess gift. Collier’s, Sunset Liquors or Joe Canal’s would
Wise answers to perplexing questions
be your first stop. If you really want to make an impression, stop at the Lobster House and bring a tray of their jumbo shrimp for a shrimp cocktail app. That effort will surely guarantee a future invitation. Dear Answer Lady I know this will sound cheesy, but I am getting ready to break up with my girlfriend and wonder if I should do it before Christmas, so I don’t have to buy her a gift. I hate doing it before Christmas, but on the other hand, I cannot bear ringing in the New Year with
someone I do not like anymore. She presented herself as one kind of person and I came to find out she is quite the opposite. For one thing, she is really racist and I cannot believe I did not pick that up from the very beginning but I have to admit, she is also very beautiful, and I was thrilled to death to have a girlfriend that turned heads when we walked into a room. I guess what I am really asking is should I buy a gift anyway? — On the Brink Dear Brink Why would you buy a gift for someone you don’t like? The Answer Lady’s question is why haven’t you made the break already? It sounds like you still are enjoying the fact that men envy you when you walk into a room with her. Somewhat superficial, don’t you think? Clearly, you are not shallow or her racist leanings would not bother you one little bit. Instead of dwelling on buying a Christmas gift, take her to the Brown Room for a holiday cocktail and before the night is over tell her the relationship is done. Do not drop that bomb IN the Brown Room. Scenes are never a positive. And start the New Year with a keener eye for character.

Bird Droppings
J
Dispatches from the nation’s birdwatching capital… by Seymore Thanu
ust because the hawk watch at Cape May Point State Park is officially over does not mean hawks have stopped migrating. It was the counter that was under contract, not the hawks. In truth, even late December can produce bountiful hawk movements. Add northwest winds and sunny to partially sunny skies and you have hawks. The sun provides thermal lift, the winds ferry hawks go to the Point. From here on in, birds are mostly motivated by food. Not just food abundance but availability. Accordingly, a big dump of snow across New York state and New England will send hawks south, their prey now cloaked in snow. Rodent specialists like Red-tailed Hawk and Northern Harrier bail out of the north. Dress warmly and bring binoculars and pay particular attention to the tight flocks of Turkey Vultures wheeling about. These mostly dark soaring birds are easy to find against a blue sky. Other soaring birds will join the vultures and, with your eyes properly calibrated, you’ll be able to pick out the paler Red-tailed
and Red-shouldered Hawks. Eagles, with their plank-like wings, will be slightly larger than the vultures. Bald Eagles are particularly common migrants. Largely dependent upon open fish-bearing water, when inland lakes and rivers freeze over, eagles take wing. No longer rare, the white-headed adults and piebald young still rate high on the “ooh-ahh” scale. If winds are more west than north, try watching from Rea Farm parking lot off Bayshore Road. It’s out of the wind and
directly under the flight path of birds cutting the corner on the Cape. Seeing the bay, electing not to cross, the birds see little reason to go all the way down, just to retrace their steps. Hawks are not the only birds still migrating in December. Snow Geese and Tundra Swan sometimes appear and you’ll hear them before you see them. Snow Geese have a single note honk, while the call of Tundra, one of the most magical sounds, sounds like a cross between a whoop and a sigh. Many songbirds including waxwings and winter finch are essentially nomadic. Food runs out here, they go over there. If the Great Lakes freeze, you can expect a bonus push of water birds, most notably Rednecked Grebe. So just because the calendar says December, don’t hang up your binoculars. You can also count on the bird feeders at the Northwood Center to enliven your day with their host of wintering birds. And where you find concentrations of songbirds, you’ll find bird hunting hawks. Consider them just one more bird coming to the feeder.

ZION spent his life with a family but they could take him with them when they moved. He is an active boy and loves to run in the yard. He is quite the character and wants his personal space respected, so an adult household would suit him better. For those who understand chihuahuas, Zion is very typical - once he warms up, he is content and affectionate.
RUFUS is a calm 6 year old hound mix who loves being outside. Nothing makes this boy happier than long walks on a nice day. Rufus is comfortable with adults and is content to lean in for petting; as a result he is suited for an adult home and one that is calm. Come visit this sweet boy today! He is patiently waiting to meet his new friends.
LYLA is a shy seven year old girl whose family was unable to care for her, so she arrived at the shelter confused and scared. Her sad eyes follow you as you pass her kennel. Lyla is reserved in the yard, but walks well on a leash and seems to enjoy that experience. Once she is comfortable with you, she elicits attention and loves to be petted. Adopt this sweet girl!

FENTON is a cool Siamese mix with a lot of personality. Sometimes he can be afraid of new situations, but once he gets to know you, Fenton loves to be pet and even snuggle in your lap. Come down to the shelter to meet sweet Fenton today! He’d make a great gift this holiday season!
MR. CUPCAKE is a friendly senior from the sunny state of California! He came all the way to NJ to live with family, only to be sent to the shelter when someone turned out to be “allergic.” He is a pretty easy going cat. Mr. Cupcake grew up around kids, so they don’t bother him at all. Stop by and adopt this sweetie for Christmas today!
HERSHEY & MIDNIGHT were adopted together as kittens. Unfortunately, they had to come back to the shelter because their family’s home had to be sold and they had nowhere else to go. The previous owner described them as sweet, shy cats who like to be pet, but take some time to warm up to new people. If you think you can be their savior, adopt today!
