Weird Sea Creature
Did You Know?
What We’re Reading
The Pelican Eel, aka a Gulper, is not really an eel at all — it’s a scaleless fish named for a giant mouth that extends like that of a pelican to hold on to prey. As far as fish go, this guy’s a pretty poor swimmer. Instead, he relies on a pink or red bioluminescent (a glow-in-thedark) tail that draws in other fish the pelican eel can then eat for dinner. The gulper can be more than three feet long, with a body that’s half tail.
In the 1960s, when mayor Frank Gauvry (center) advocated for an outdoor, mall in Cape May, the concept was still a northern European idea that hadn’t made its way across the Atlantic. Revitalization efforts in America were still focused on car-friendly construction like highways and parking garages. Only five major cities in the US offered anything similar. But, despite a great deal of hostility, when the mall was completed in 1971 it became an instant success. Merchants were able to stay open after Labor Day, and city leaders flocked to Cape May to experience the concept.
American Fire Monica Hesse Tue story of Accomack County in rural Virginia, the target of a months-long arson campaign. It’s a true-crime love story in which the characters and motives are as weird as they are compelling. A strange trip through the heartlands.

Ramblings From The Editor
I
Ideas, idle gossip and occasionally important odds ’n’ ends... by Jack Wright
t really DID feel like August on Saturday, didn’t it? Albeit a very, very cold August. I read some comments on Facebook complaining that the Christmas Parade and Cape May in general just ain’t what they used to be. And it’s true — there are more visitors than ever descending upon this island, and not just in the summer. Does this bring about frustrations as well as the inevitable boost to business? Of course, but I think everyone benefits when restaurants, stores and accommodations are open through December when many were not before. Quickly switching gears, this is the thirdlast opportunity I have to remind you that the 16th annual Exit Zero Burns Supper is happening on Saturday, January 25. On that night, 400 people will file into Convention Hall for what is now one of the world’s biggest celebrations of poet Robert Burns. It’s true! There will be 400 people seated caféstyle, enjoying great Celtic music from our very own Bastard Sons of Captain Mey, plus Pittsburgh’s the Bastard Bearded Irishmen as well as the pipers and drummers of the Nae
Breeks band. A stellar lineup! The food will once again be catered by our friends at the Washington Inn, who did a fabulous job last year. Starters are salmon deviled eggs or scotch broth, while the mains are either shepherd’s pie or haggis (choice of meat or veggie option). There’s also dessert. For those unaware, Robert Burns is the great 18th-century Scots poet — he wrote Auld Lang Syne among many others — who is honored at Burns Suppers all over the world and our event is now one of the largest!

Tickets for all that entertainment and food cost $45. Buy them online at ezstore.us, or call our store at 609-770-8479. But it’s not just about the big dinner on Saturday this year. We are stretching it into a Burns Weekend with a gourmet Scottish dinner at Exit Zero Filling Station on Friday, January 24. We will be offering FIVE delicious courses for $60 — scallops with cauliflower purée; chorizo scotch egg; gratin of smoked haddock and crab with chilli and cheese; Scottish salmon wellington; with the Scottish dessert cranachan to finish up. For an extra $15, you can sign up for a four-course whisky tasting, courtesy of our friends at Arran distillery, who are sponsors of our Burns Weekend and producers of Aran single malt and the Robert Burns whiskies. There will also be acoustic Celtic music and a few musings from myself. I cannot wait for this very special, exclusive event, which will kick off at 7pm, though feel free to join us earlier for drinks. Please call 609-770-8479 or email me at jack@ exitzero.us to sign up.

very week, the Exit Zero crew goes for lunch (or dinner or, maybe even on occasion, breakfast) at one of Cape May’s excellent dining establishments. Then we give you the skinny on what we ate, what we talked about (or some of what we talked about), who spat their drink from laughing too hard, who served us, who we bumped into and, you know, the general vibe. The restaurant: The Ebbitt Room at the Virginia hotel on glorious Jackson Street. The bartender: It was our own Katie Repici, formerly operations manager at Exit Zero and who still puts all the photographs into the magazine every week, though that will come to a sad end in a few weeks because Katie is decamping to Denver, Colorado, with her partner Maddie. We will miss her dearly, but Colorado is a place that has been calling her name for a while now. The drinks: Diane opted for the Blackberry Smash and both Katie and Jack wondered when she had suddenly become a bourbon drinker. Jack had the Paper Plane (bourbon, amaretto and aperol), which was a bit too sweet, so he then switched it back to old faithful, aka the Manhattan. A light argument then ensued as to whether a real Manhattan has bitters. Jack is firmly in the bitters corner, whereas Katie and Kevin were not. Who’s Kevin? See below. The run-in: We helped secure seats at the buzzy bar for Kevin and Donna, who run Hannah G’s restaurant in Ventnor. We discussed the subjects of overtime, finding good restaurant staff and how totally superior Cape May is to Ventnor. (Actually, we didn’t discuss that — but we did think it.) They were enjoying an overnight stay in Cape May and we strong-armed them into eating breakfast next morning at Exit Zero Filling Station — and they DID turn up, as promised. The beady eyes: All night, Diane swore that the older lady in the red cardigan at the corner of the bar was giving her stink eye, but she couldn’t figure out why. The food: Diane had the arugula salad with squash and pear because she wants to lose 30lbs by Christmas, while Jack feasted upon the deviled eggs, ribs and Arctic char because he also wants to lose 30lbs by Christmas but entirely lacks the willpower and, well, food is just too good, right? The hot tip: We didn’t have them on this night, but the chargrilled Delaware Bay oysters are irresistible. So is the lobster roll, but December doesn’t feel the right time to be ordering lobster roll.

This week, Emma Goldmark from The Washington Inn is up. How long have you been bartending? Six months. Favorite drink to make? A Mezcal Negroni because I like the smokiness it adds to the classic negroni. What’s your bartending pet peeve? When customers snap at me when they want something. Dream job? An architect because I love the creative aspect of building something out of nothing.

Terry O’Brien’s legendary column... social satire, shameless plugs — and general self-indulgence
here’s nothing that gets my ire up more than middle-aged white folks of BOTH genders bitching about proper lawn chair etiquette for the West Cape May Christmas Parade on Facebook. Never have I seen a more clearly partisan Left (side of the street) vs Right (side of the street) issue. Who’s Left? Who’s Right? Depends on your point of view (north or south). Might I suggest you avoid the whole controversy in the future by spending the evening at Exit Zero Filling Station listening to live music, sipping and supping. Parades are for kids. And adults who like to openly day-drink at night. At the very least, let this serve as a stark reminder of how great we have it in this country right now, in this nearly unprecedented era of peace and prosperity, that we have the time and wherewithal to argue about West Cape May Christmas Parade Lawn Chair Etiquette on Facebook. What a glorious time to be alive! Speaking of the WCM Christmas Parade and EZFS, we held our first-ever Christmas
Under the Canopy over the weekend and it was 50% of a success! Friday night began with me and Walter Sapsai, Jr playing a set of tunes under the gas canopy for some sporadic passers-by as White Christmas played on our makeshift movie screen. Walt and I then moved inside where it was much warmer and much more populated and he proceeded to enthrall the room with a mix of hits and deep cuts that made this Deep Cut Connoisseur extremely jealous. Walt was the bass player for my Billy Joel tribute, The Strangers, from our first set of shows in 2013 to this
past October. Turns out he’s also a stone cold killer ninja assassin guitar player and vocalist. Saturday was the same inside/outside deal, only with my Tuesday night acoustic partner Bill Caterini and Al Olivero and “It’s a Wonderful Life”. Al is another Strangers and Love me Dudes veteran since 2013, the drummer, so naturally he was on guitar and keys. After an outdoor set, Bill and I abandoned him to the cold and moved inside. After our first set I was so concerned about Al being all on his lonesome out under the canopy that I went to check on him… to find him surrounded by a throng of 30-40 post-parade revelers and doing just fine. He was really killing it all night. In all, a very busy, very interesting weekend of music and merriment and hopefully the first of many Christmas Under the Canopies. Big thanks to Walt, Al and Bill, for filling in for Tim Joyce, and an extra thanks to Bill, who helped establish our Tuesday night open mic night and will now be moving on to focus on his solo projects. And please, no one

tell Tim I needed three musicians to replace him. There’ll be no living with him... Speaking of EZFS open mic night, last week’s was another fun one, with guests Walter Sapsai, Jr (that guy is everywhere), Brandon Smith and Gregg Carpenter. It was also super-neat to play the show with Jon Katity as my wing man. Most of you know these names by now and can probably hear the cacophony of great music just by reading them. It was just like that, but better. This week’s EZFSOM will be co-hosted by Al Olivero and you’re all invited to come sing, play, drink and eat. Bar Closer of the Week: John Cooke, who made me promise not to tell anyone he closed the bar last Saturday. Am I doing it right? (Still owe him a beer, week 11.) Thank You of the Week: To Leslie Weidel, for doing her best to untie the knots in my right shoulder. That 20 seconds brought more relief than my last three doctor’s visits. VIP Night of the Week: I near forgot about the big VIP night we had at EZFS for all our friends and advertisers! It was great meeting (and serving) so many of you, though I was a little distressed at the very few offers of quid pro quo. You know, come to my store, I’ll give you a free thing and you can write about how great it is. (Maybe if we called it bribery more people would understand it.) Oh well, turns out our advertisers have ethics. How dare they! I’ve watched The Irishman twice now and have still seen no sign of Hugh Murray. And Joe Pesci’s Irish accent is the worst I’ve ever heard. Zinger of the Week: The smoke alarms went off during an O’Brien & Joyce gig last week, prompting regular visitor Laura Roberts to request “We Didn’t Start the Fire.” And here I thought Dennis Flanagan was the clever half of that couple… Zinger of the Week II: As I strolled in for my serving shift last Wednesday, EZ Girl Friday
December 12, 2019 Katie Repici entered the kitchen. Lunch cook Eric Gerlacher asked, “How was your Hot Chick?” Katie replied, “Great!” Unsolicited, I offered, “I didn’t know you had a date last night.” Silence ensued. The, uh, Hot Chick is a, uh, sandwich. Debbie Yamashita and George Dick have become regulars at Ye Olde EZFS, usually on live music nights. He’s a very nice guy, but she, whether sitting at the bar having a cocktail or at a table enjoying dinner, lights up the whole room with her smile. Seriously, it’s a privilege to earn one. George really out-kicked the coverage on this one. I know that feeling. If you, like me, deliver magazines for four hours every Wednesday night/Thursday morning, might I suggest the perfect listening experience is to stream WXPN on your Bluetooth radio while occasionally switching over to 101.5 WCFA-LP just as “Orange Crush” by R.E.M. comes on. I swear, someone over there is reading this column... I’m told several of my readers made it over to Eat Well in North Cape May on my recent recommendations. First, this is a very wise thing to do because their fresh baked goods, soups and sandwiches are amazing. Second, this means I AM NOW AN INFLUENCER! PEOPLE MUST DO WHAT I TELL THEM! NOW BRING ME SOME BACON AND EGGS AND DIET DR PEPPER BECAUSE I’M REALLY TRYING TO CUT MY CARBS! Michelle Walsh, an office person at Richard M. Teitelman Middle School, made a point of telling me how jazzed her daughter Maddie was that I recently wrote about some Billy Joel deep cuts, saying something along the lines of, “Mom! Someone else has heard ‘Sleeping With the Television On’”! Not only have I heard and sung this song, Maddie, but you, by also knowing it, are one of the two or three coolest kids in the world. ’Til next week, don’t get caught in The Undertow.

The Old Fogey
I
Ah, those good old Cape May days... by Jackson D’Catur
am not a fan of “amusing” Christmas sweaters. Especially when worn ironically by those of you who, lacking any definable character traits that might be considered interesting, have decided that a knitted garment of clear bad taste will in fact signal wackiness or an ability to laugh at oneself. They are little better than socks emblazoned with cartoon characters. Don’t get me wrong — there are a very few number of very notable exceptions. My faithless manservant, Kitchener, for example, always wore one that his mother had knitted for him, that was red and fluffy (angora, possibly) with white trim, and had (in case the observer was not getting the already clumsily made point) the word “SANTA” across the chest. That was not the genius of the garment. Close to the ragged hem on the front was an arrow pointing downwards and the words “this way to my bulging sack.” None of this should have been amusing, except Kitchener is a rather literal chap, and never ever seemed to appreciate the joke. He would wander around during the fabled
D’Catur Mansion Christmas Party, bemused but happy at being the center of a traveling bubble of laughter and pointing. In the end, the laugh was on us, when Mae West (who used to holiday here with a small crowd including that awful rake, Errol Flynn) made the punchline herself: that lady had fast hands and a ribald sense of humor. So, she grabbed hold of poor Kitchener as he passed with a tray of amuse bouches, and a moment later, he shrieked, and she screamed and fell in a dead faint.
When she was revived, her eyes were wide, and she could only mutter “the bulging sack…” over and over, whilst eyeing Kitchener like a starving wolf regarding a steak. On reflection, the chap did lean forward a little when standing up, as if off balance. We never mentioned it again, not least because one’s mother should not be knitting one a sweater boasting of her son’s, um, meat and two veg. However, since that day, Kitchener seems more confident and certainly more popular with the ladies and some gents. But unless you are both as un-self-aware and as apparently extravagantly endowed as Kitchener, do not dare to show up with a joke jumper on, or I will have you thrashed. But to show that we love a joke, offenders will have their own sweater removed with scissors and be made to wear a rather fetching one that declares in Comic Sans font, “I was beaten off by Jackson D’Catur”. Why, I can hardly dictate this for laughing already, so heaven knows how utterly hilarious you will all (including the beatee) find it on the evening of the party.

ine, the poet said, is the “liquid quintessence of concentrated sunbeams.” If that sounds like perfect ammunition to get through the dark days of December, think about how much better it will be when you learn something about it. Luckily, Cape May offers plenty of educational opportunities. You don’t have to study wine to enjoy it, but knowledge elevates the drinking experience. No one is suggesting you become a wine snob, just that you determine what you like and explore great tastes for the people you host. Maybe you can learn to match a wine with your signature dish — find a vigonier to set off your roast chicken, or a syrah to complement your grilled cheese. Or, as you plan your dream trip, sample the wines of the region to learn about the geography and culture — you’ll feel like you’re halfway there. Celebrating a significant anniversary? Determine the best wines bottled that year. Mix up your New Year’s Eve with an unusual sparkling wine.

Experts suggest that you start your learning experience with a notebook, and simply record wines that you like. Ask your friends for their favorites. Talk to the people at your local liquor store and become a “regular.” Read up on the great wine producing regions of the world. Join the Sunday Wine Club on the Porch at Washington Inn on Sunday, December 15, from 3:30 to 5:30. Wine director Alena Scrocca will be sharing her knowledge, along with wine tastings and a cheese plate. Seating is limited, and reservations are required — call 609-884-5697. $40 per person. Or, take a trolley tour Cape May Wine Trail on Saturday, December 28, at 11:00am.

The Answer Lady
T
he Answer Lady invites inquiries from gentle readers on all manner of relationship quandaries, matters of the heart and ethics. If you’d like to send a query, write to info@exitzero. us. Or, simply sit back, enjoy a cup of coffee and contemplate the wisdom herein. Dear Answer Lady I think I am going to have to sue my sister and it makes me sick, but I can’t think of another other option. Our father has dementia and my sister has twice coerced him into signing the farm over to her. By accident, I found the will and had a judge overturn it, but she keeps on trying to get him to sign yet another, leaving all his assets to her. This is after I have offered $30,000 to buy her out. Our father cannot last much longer and I feel I have no other recourse, but I feel guilty. — Cut Out Dear Out Feel free to be guilt-free. Your sister has no moral compass. What kind of person takes advantage of a parent in that manner? Not to mention her betrayal of you. It is better to take action now before your father succumbs, otherwise emotions will really escalate. You

need to make sure you keep your own mental health strong. A cup of herbal tea at Ostara’s would be a good start and believe it or not, physical exercise — either a trip to North Beach Gym or take advantage of our own natural resources, the beach and our nature trails. Dear Answer Lady I am always at a loss as to what to give my boss for Christmas. It’s touchy. I am his private secretary and am always cautious about becoming over-familiar. There are many people in the office as well and they are always
looking to suck up and making snide remarks about my relationship with him — which is, and always has been, strictly professional. I certainly don’t want to do anything which could be construed as over-the-top. Still, he is a really good boss and I want to show my appreciation. Plus, his wife is so nice to me. What would you suggest? — Gift-Challenged Dear Challenged This is easy. A gift certificate to his favorite restaurant would be perfect and something he and his wife could enjoy. Don’t do anything that will break your piggy bank, but there are so many choices – Sapore Italiano in West Cape May, Lucky Bones, Oyster Bay, Louisa’s, Tisha’s and so many more. Again, The Answer Lady would suggest you not exceed your budget. A $50 gift certificate would be acceptable. It’s enough of a gesture to show your appreciation but not enough to raise eyebrows. If you want to spend less, then a nice bottle of wine or liquor is also a safe bet. Collier’s, Sunset Liquors or Joe Canal’s would be the place to stop. None of these type of gifts will compromise you in any way.

Bird Droppings
E
Dispatches from the nation’s birdwatching capital… by Seymore Thanu
veryone wants to give that perfect gift for the holidays. This year, why not make it a game-changing gift, one that will put the recipient on the path to a lifetime of discovery. Everyone likes engaging nature, and birds are Ma Nature’s envoys. Birds can be counted upon to engage you wherever your travels take you. It’s a treasure hunt and every bird you discover is another piece of booty in the coffers of your mind. The way to unlock this treasure is to give someone the tools that engage and decode the world. Two instruments: binoculars and a field guide. The birds do the rest. Young or old, birds are equal opportunity subjects. I started birding when I was seven. I just met a 95-year-old Catholic nun who was birding for the very first time. Ethnic background, belt size, income, education. None of these things matter. Birding vaults all socio-economic barriers. A delight for all eyes, brown or blue or in between. And a delight for the ears, too. You already thrill to hear the birds in spring.
Imagine how much more pleasure you’ll gain by being able to pin a name to the vocalist. Binoculars and a field guide. Easy as that. Don’t be daunted by price or formulas. There are bins designed with bird study in mind for under $100. Binoculars that focus close, focus quickly and offer you an image that makes you say “WOW.” So this holiday season, put WOW in the hands of someone special. Hardly anyone is giving WOW at less than the price of a Lexus.
As for field guides, the Kenn Kaufman Guide To Birds is designed with beginners in mind. The Sibley Guide is the gold standard. Head on over to Cape May Bird Observatory, 701 East Lake Drive and get their advice. It’s not every place that has a resource like this. Take advantage of it and know that they also offer a wealth of optics on sale. Lots of makes and models at prices that will fit the tightest budget. Part of your holiday present can be field trips with that special somebody. You live in Cape May, the birding capital of North America. Five hundred bird species under the tree. Seven hundred in North America. Ten thousand in the world. So if you are searching for a life-changing gift for someone between 7-95, think bird watching, North America’s #2 outdoor activity. Next year you can give them a birding trip or workshop to boost their skills. Arizona, California, Alaska, the Rio Grand Valley... it’s a treasure hunt and the starting point is your own backyard which in Cape May is so bird-rich, some people never leave.

ZION spent his life with a family but they could take him with them when they moved. He is an active boy and loves to run in the yard. He is quite the character and wants his personal space respected, so an adult household would suit him better. For those who understand chihuahuas, Zion is very typical - once he warms up, he is content and affectionate.
CHEWY arrived at the shelter as a stray, but spent several days in a home with other dogs and kids. He was friendly and playful in the household. It is estimated that Chewy is less than two years old and could do well with another dog and older kids. Chewy is very playful and loving towards people and with some training, could be a wonderful pet!

Low Inventory = Sellers’ Market! Thinking of listing your property? With the lowest inventory in several years, it’s best to choose a Designated Sellers’ Representative Specialist, like Joseph (Jody) Alessandrine, SRS. WHAT JODY’S PAST SELLERS SAY:
“In all of the numerous real estate transactions, I never remembering appreciating so much a realtor’s service.” — Mark G. “Jody, it was because of you and your willingness to hold open houses, that we sold our house quickly and for top dollar. You were a very patient, tenacious and professional agent, and we were very pleased when we received multiple offers.” — Mary A.
