It’s the most wonderful time of the year! And that’s because of events like the annual Nick Fedoroff Community Christmas Celebration, at Convention Hall on December 15. Featuring free activities like face painting, games, refreshments and entertainment, the event honored the legacy of a beloved former captain of Cape May Police Department. Donations were collected for an annual toy drive benefiting disadvantaged children. That toy drive was founded by (and is named for) another late, beloved officer, Sergeant Bill Alvarez. Flamingo tongue snails take their body tissue and wrap it around the outside of their shells, which is why they look like they’re covered in orange or yellow spots. (The animals are threatened by people who collect them not knowing they’re alive.) They feed on corals with the help of a sharp tongue that scrapes away and leaves nothing but skeleton behind — it regenerates. The snails also steal chemicals from these corals that they can then use to poison their own predators.
Cape May’s harbor, a century old, came to be when a power broker from Pittsburgh named William Flinn dredged 500 marshy acres with the intention of using the spoils to develop East Cape May. His development project never came to fruition, but the harbor proved invaluable. During both world wars, it provided much-needed access to the Delaware Bay for our troops, and during Prohibition it provided a safe haven for rum runners. Now, it’s home to the only Coast Guard boot camp in the nation, as well as the second most lucrative fishing port, with landings totaling more than $100 million. Recreational fishing more your thing? The marinas along the harbor offer charter trips and boat rentals. Sea-to-table never tasted so good.

Ramblings From The Editor
A
Ideas, idle gossip and occasionally important odds ’n’ ends... by Jack Wright
lthough I believe that Facebook will be ultimately responsible for the demise of humankind, I do spend around 15 minutes every day, usually in the predawn hours while my dogs are doing their business, checking to see if any interesting local issues are being raised. Usually the experience leaves me frustrated, though there’s always the odd baby goat video, or black bears playing on the swings of a North Jersey home, to cheer me up. Recently, there have been lots of comments inspired by the construction of Lokal Hotel, the bandstand in Rotary Park, the planned new Hotel Icona at the old Beach Theater and the new restaurant that’s going to be added to the arcade on Beach and Jackson. The usual complaint is that none of these projects are in the Cape May spirit — they are not Victorian. Of course they’re not Victorian. We do not live in Victorian times. We are about to enter the third decade of the 21st century and that should be reflected in the architecture, just
like it was in Victorian times, when, guess what, people generally built in the Victorian style. If you start throwing up (and I use the phrase deliberately) fake Victorian buildings, you are doing a great disservice to the authentic buildings that grace our Historic District. Not only that, but it would be a giant red flag to the National Park Service, who monitor places like Cape May which are on the National Historic Landmark register. that list, it would be a huge blow because it could open up the gates for barbarian builders to come in and construct vinyl monstrosities in the center of our beautiful city. Guess what would NOT impress the National Park Service? Building fake Victorian homes. I read an article online recently which phrased it beautifully, saying that copying an older style of home is “more insidious than an Elvis impersonator, because at least with an Elvis impersonator, you know for sure that it’s not the real Elvis.” Cape May HAS to evolve, like any healthy community. Tastefully designed modern buildings are necessary. This city needed a new bandstand because the old one was rotting. The new restaurant at the arcade has a simple, beachy look that will work well on the beachfront. As for Lokal Hotel, I realize it’s not everyone’s cup of tea, but I think its rustic vibe is a great addition to the stock of accommodations on the island. very week, the Exit Zero crew goes for lunch (or dinner or, maybe even on occasion, breakfast) at one of Cape May’s excellent dining establishments. Then we give you the skinny on what we ate, what we talked about (or some of what we talked about), who spat their drink from laughing too hard, who served us, who we bumped into and, you know, the general vibe. The place: Wawa on Texas Avenue. The obsession: Cat Country, the radio station, once called Wawa “Disney for people from South Jersey.” Both The New York Times and Mashable have written about “the cult of Wawa.” And a Philadelphia magazine article profiled some of the diehard fans who’ve gotten Wawa tattoos and at least one couple who got married there. The door holding: Everyone does it. Perhaps nowhere on planet earth do people hold the door more readily and happily than at Wawa. Never mind the fact that we run each other down in the parking lot. (Seriously — that parking lot is waaay tricky!) The trivia: Wawa is a Native American name for goose. It is also the name of the Pennsylvania town where the Wawa business began, as a dairy processing plant. It expanded into retail in 1964. The calories: Have you noticed they’re now calculated for you automatically as you plug in your order? This is equal parts handy and horrifying. The food: Food and Wine magazine once called Wawa’s tuna hoagie on whole wheat “heaven for a few bucks.” But, since it was early (practically dawn), we opted instead for the scrambled egg bowl and and an everything bagel sandwich with egg whites, turkey, American cheese and bacon. But we still believe the star of the Wawa menu is the melty buffalo hoagie with breaded chicken and extra jalapeños. (620 calories, if you must know.) To drink: Hazelnut coffee with lots of milk —it’s the Jack way on those rare events when he actually risks tummy upset by drinking coffee. The run-in: We chatted with Christina Mantz, navy vet, mom and affable employee of the Grand Hotel. Also: Ed Melega, president of the Cape May Maritime Museum and an active-duty coast guardsmen of 24 years who still works in security at TraCen Cape May on the harbor. The book: It’s called The Wawa Way. Look it up! The consensus: Despite those sobering calorie (and sodium) counts, sometimes a body just craves a Wawa.

Terry O’Brien’s legendary column... social satire, shameless plugs — and general self-indulgence
he column you’re reading is called Undertow. Sometimes I write fast, sometimes I write slow. But fast or slow is hardly the matter, what’s definite is I’ve surely got fatter. But that’s okay, the point it is moot. It helps me fill out my new Santa suit! Actually, Santa got called away in a pinch, so I write this today done up as the Grinch. The Grinch is for kids! (And one strange older lady.) The Grinch is for Jack and Cathy and Katie. They came for the waffles, the smoothies and tots. They stayed for the burgers, the curries and shots! And so it was on this Christmas week, that the Grinch’s eyebrow game was on fleek. So as we draw near the end of this semi-clever rhyme, we here at EZ wish you a wonderful time. Spend it with friends, relations and family. And read Jack’s column, which gets a bit rambly. Spend it with things and the ones that you love. And spare a thought for those looking down from above. So go spend the week on a family vacation. We’ll be here waiting at ye olde Filling Station. With music and laughs and all sorts of libation. We’ll be your host on any
occasion. And may I just say as I work on this column, sometimes I’m nice, I’m not always a gollum. So please do accept, to you, from me, my very best wishes and Christmas-y glee. In other words, Merry Christmas ya filthy animals. It’s Not What It Looks Like of the Week: I’ve been battling some shoulder pain recently and got some Icy Hot patches that make you smell like a 75-year-old club tennis player after three hard sets and a slathering of Ben Gay. (Maturity Points for not making a gay joke here.) They’re effective, but difficult
to place properly on one’s upper right shoulder blade area by oneself, so I recruited Exit Zero Filling Station barkeep Gordon Sterling to assist. Into the restroom we went, off went my shirt, on went the patch, and in walked other EZFS bartender Steve Wilson. The moment just kind of hung there; me half-naked, Gordon’s hands on my back, Steve in the doorway looking confused (aroused?). He slowly backed out, on went my shirt, back to work went Gordon, and a silent promise was made to never speak of it again. Compliment of the Week: From Lea and Ken Nadler from Harrisburg, PA, who said I have a perfect James Taylor voice. This is appreciated as I try my best to sound like the singers I cover. I also do a fair-to-middlin’ version of his alcohol and cocaine addiction. (Just kidding. I’ve never done cocaine. Welcome to my Christmas column.) EZFS Customers of the Week: Kathe (it’s pronounced Kathy but she just had to be different, like my wife Cath-no E-rine) and Kevin Stepanuk, regulars who stopped in for dinner, stayed for some music (after a

week playing with Bill Caterini, Al Olivero and Walt Sapsai, Jr, all wonderful musicians, it was nice to get back to my regular partner Tim Joyce, who slips on like an old sock (in fact, that is now his Blues Man name, Tim “Old Sock” Joyce) and got swept up in what became the Exit Zero Discotheque, led by Maureen Harris and a gaggle of dancers fresh from Congress Hall’s Winter Wonderland and, apparently, several spectacular cocktails. EZFS Customers of the Week II: Paul and Sherry McCord are Frequent Fillers who came in, had dinner and went home like normal people. We get so few of them at EZFS we sometimes forget what they look like, so thank you for reminding us. They have Trinkets, a jewelry shop on Carpenter’s Lane behind the mall. EZFS Customer of the Week III: Cape May Brewing Co. point man Justin Vitti is, I’m certain, incredibly proud of his beautiful baby daughter and, I’m certain, crushingly disappointed he cannot show her how to grow an oldtimey handlebar mustache. EZFS Customers of the Week IV: You’ve probably seen Britt Cameron’s blonde bob bouncing in the morning sun as she runs the West Cape May bridge with somewhere between one and six children in tow. She and husband Scotty were in for dinner. ALONE. How is this possible with six kids? “A team of Swedish babysitters?” I asked. Turns out they left their oldest in charge for the first time and were feeling confident, but the check-ins were regular. Family. It’s all we have in the end. So do it well. Marriage Is: Giving your wife your charger until you die. Thank You of the Week: To Cape Harbor Shell. As Exit Zero Delivery Guy, I make unscheduled pit stops depending on how much coffee or iced tea I’ve had, and Cape Harbor Shell has that good restroom toilet paper. They could have gone cheap, like other gas stations, but they didn’t. Worst Thing That Has Ever Happened of the Week: Took my son Henry to Pizza Hut in Rio
December 19, 2019 Grande after basketball practice last week (he made the traveling team!) and ordered one plain, one ham and onion, confirmed twice by the cashier, and got home to find ham and pineapple on the pie. That Pizza Hut needs to be destroyed, the bricks buried at sea, and the ground salted. Hey Buddy Tip of the Week: When you park on the grass outside the auditorium at LCMR High School like you’re some kind of genius big shot, everyone thinks you’re a jerk. Song of the Week: “Must Have Been Ol’ Santa Claus” by Harry Connick, Jr. The last truly great American Christmas song. TV Show of the Week: HBO’s Watchmen wrapped up this week and it was pretty great. It positioned itself as this hyper-woke response to the Trump Era, but in the end those elements were just woven into a greater overarching story. Or, as I like to call it, a story. Confusing TV Show of the Week: HBO’s Mrs Fletcher. It was… fine. Well-acted, well-written, I suppose. But… who was it for? Guess we’ll never know as this first season is also the last and it’s just kind of… there. Pleasant TV Surprise of the Week: The Mandalorian on Disney +. Through six episode five have been great and one has been pretty good. I don’t have a lot of faith in Disney’s handling of Star Wars (The Last Jedi was excruciating and Rise of Skywalker looks worse) but, so far, consider me impressed. And Baby Yoda is awesome. I did my Christmas bit earlier, so I’d just like to close by saying I hope you all have a safe and happy Christmas. And if you’re looking for something to do, O’Brien & Joyce will be at EZFS every Tuesday, Friday and Saturday, 5-9. Christmas Eve will be a 12-4 afternoon session, and New Year’s Eve will be 6-10. Grown-up hours for grown-ups. Next week I’ll get into all my sappy end-ofyear stuff, but thank you all for sticking with me this far. ’Til next week, don’t get caught in The Undertow.

The Old Fogey
I
Ah, those good old Cape May days... by Jackson D’Catur
t will soon be time for the world (insofar as the Cape May city boundaries are the world, which as far as civilization is concerned, is totally the case) Snowball Championships. This event started in the 1930s, when Ermie Hemingway, Amelia Earhart, Erroll Flynn and pals used to winter here. This consisted mostly of debauchery and all manner of hi-jinks, not least of which was the “challenge an unsuspecting stranger to a snowball fight” prank. The naïve chump would be scrabbling around making a fluffy pom-pom of snow, while Erroll would roll an ice-ball from his pocket. Erroll’s balls were the talk of the coast, and if handled with cunning, they were capable of taking a woman’s head off. Or a man’s, of course. Well, that would have been that, but you know Cape May’s unofficial tagline: “Enough is Never Enough”, and so we started to contrive all manner of clever snowball-making devices. First, we had our jumbo snowball maker. Before you knew it, snowballs the size of pit ponies were flying all over town. I swear, I have never seen anything quite so
gay (in the old fashioned sense) than a chap strolling along the boardwalk, and a loud descending whistle and swelling shadow being the only forewarning of a ton of snow landing on him with an amusing “crump”. If one ignored the broken bones and blood, it was all delightful! Next up, we converted the gatling gun on the roof to fire ice pellets. That was a spectacle, though it played havoc with my shellshock flashbacks. So, on to the masterpiece: I had the old “coal into diamond” machine
in the basement that I had built to impress a lady. I would show a lump of coal in my palm, slip it unseen into the machine’s intake and whilst I gritted my teeth and pretended to squeeze, the device would employ a series of colossal steam pistons which compressed the coal so hard it became a diamond, which would be slipped back into my white-knuckled grip in time to present it with a flourish. It all went well until her per cat, a vile Siamese named Mr Chuckles, slipped whilst attacking me, and went into the intake. Anyways, I dusted it off, blowing off cobwebs and white fur, and started shoveling snow in, eager to join the noisy, jolly fray outside. Well, who knew that if you squeeze snow with a force of a billion pounds per square inch, it actually makes a tiny, unstable black hole? Not the dozens of Wildwooders who were hooting with joy outside, when the black-hole-ball landed among them. On the plus side, the cleanup was minimal, and incriminating evidence scant. Especially when I nudged all local lawyers into the collapsing black hole just in time.

ecember is a great month for tradition, whether or not you celebrate Christmas. Maybe you spend December 25 at the movies every year, or grate piles of potatoes for latkes. Maybe you open one gift on Christmas Eve, put cookies and milk out for Santa, and go to midnight Mass. Maybe you roam the streets with your neighbors, singing carols. Maybe you’ve loved these traditions for decades, but they don’t work for you anymore, thanks to the circle of life, a wedding or divorce, or a move across the continent. If you’re shopping for a new set of holiday traditions, you can’t do better than Cape May. There’s something decadent about visiting your favorite summer place in the middle of winter, sort of like being in a department store after hours. There’s a sense that the mannequins have almost been caught dancing. Even the stars have stepped out of line. Though the town is crowded, it feels a bit mysterious. Some of your favorite places are buttoned up tight, others have shed their Fourth of July looks for holiday splendor. Do

The location rotates each year from one neighbor to the next. This year it’s our turn. Make no mistake, my wife and I love it. It’s a great group of people. One problem. One of the neighbors, a gentleman in his 60s, uses the midnight kiss as a chance to stick his tongue down my wife’s throat. She’s naturally gotten a little tired of it and is already dreading the moment. I’ve talked to him about it, but he always claims not to remember and blames it on the booze. He’s the nicest guy and would do anything for you, but it’s — to say the least — awkward. The thing is, I’ve never heard any of the others complain. I might add that my wife is one of the youngest of the neighborhood wives. What would you suggest? – Kissing Frenzied

If he protests, tell him you’re looking out for him. Tell him she has a bad case of herpes coming on. Highly contagious and could permanently

Dear Answer Lady We’re invited to a black-tie dinner and my wife recently tried on a dress which she plans to wear. She asked me how she looked. She looked terrible. It was way too tight around the midriff and, as a result, pushed her bosom out of the dress. I lied and told her she looked fine. But now I’m feeling guilty. I don’t want her going out looking less than her best, but she simply will not admit that she has put on a few pounds. Enough to make a difference. What do I do now? — Liar, liar Dear Liar “Oh, what a tangled web we weave….” This is the easiest solution in the world. Tell her you’ve changed your mind about the dress. You don’t like it. Arts columnist Tom Sims reviews “A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood”
red Rogers made a career of teaching kindness, but he made a life by being kind. The children’s show host spent decades in front of the camera creating a world from one neighborhood — in equal parts real and imagined. For that, he was both revered and spoofed. When I first heard about a movie featuring Tom Hanks as Fred Rogers, I was skeptical. Would the decorated actor be able to pull this one off ? Certainly, there was somebody else who could play him better. I even thought about Jim Parsons. You know the guy, he plays Sheldon on the television series The Big Bang Theory. I thought perhaps he had a better look and could more accurately ref lected the persona of Mr Rogers. But I was wrong. Over the years, Mr Rogers has been spoofed by several comedians and actors. Sometimes they got the whole feel and energy right... sometimes they were just being plain silly. But that is not what was
needed here. What was needed was a true actor who could bring us into the everyday world of this icon. We needed an actor who could bring a world of make believe into reality. And Hanks made that happen. The story for A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood is embellished from a real one. There was a reporter (played here by Matthew Rhys) who was assigned to write a small feature after interviewing Fred Rogers. He did work for Esquire. In the film, the reporter (named Lloyd) has a
terrible relationship with his father. There are deep-rooted issues that needed to be addressed but never were. A meeting with Fred Rogers? Maybe that time has come. Who better to talk with Lloyd than the man who helps children express their feelings? What do you do with the anger you feel? Somehow, Hanks is able to bring us into this particular land of make believe. We feel for Lloyd. And the fantasy portion of the film works very well. My wife, Jacquie, summed it up best, “I wanted to smile and cry at the same time.” Exactly. My whole life, I admired Mr Rogers but never as much as he deserved. I did not grow up on his show, or forgot if I did. My daughters didn’t necessarily grow up on him either. But as a grownup, there is room in my heart for a man immortalized yes by television but more for his intuitive ability to affirm. The spoofs have become passé, but it’s never too late to honor his legacy of evolved kindness (possibly with an Oscar?). Today, we need him more than ever.

Dispatches from the nation’s birdwatching capital… by Seymore Thanu
es. Cold outside. But just because it is too cold to venture outside doesn’t mean you need to forego a day’s birding. If you have a window and vegetated yard, you have birds. What you need now is some mechanism to concentrate them where you can view them. This tool of interaction is the bird feeder. There are many types of feeders designed to dispense different seed which caters to the taste and feeding styles of different species. The most basic feeder is an elevated platform. It offers easy access and appeals to a variety of birds but it often means that a single large bird, like a Blue Jay, or a squirrel, can dominate the entire feeder. Platform feeders are also open to the elements. On windy days, your seed ends up on the ground. On rainy days seed turns to mush. A solution is the “hopper feeder,” which has a seed reservoir that dispenses and protects seed. Ideal for mixed seed and attractive to the greatest variety of species. Another popular type is the tube feeder. Favored by more nimble species, these are
commonly used to dispense black oil sunflower seed, though some are designed to dispense thistle seed, favored by American Goldfinch and other finches. Peanut feeders are favored by Blue Jays and Red-bellied Woodpeckers. Suet (or beef fat) is attractive to woodpeckers, nuthatches, chickadees and starlings. You can buy suet feeders or hang suet in mesh onion bags. Keep it elevated to discourage vermin. Raisons and apple slices are attractive to mockingbirds and robins.
But don’t forget water. Birds need open water in winter, too. Replace when frozen but do NOT put antifreeze in the water. It’s toxic. Feeders should be placed where they can be easily viewed but close to bushes and trees so birds can escape from hunting hawks. If you don’t have a hedge, a discarded live Christmas tree provides shelter and cover. Keep feeders away from windows and glass doors to prevent bird strikes. Or put feeders right up against windows so birds can’t build up speed before striking the glass. You need not worry about leaving your feathered minions in the lurch should you go on vacation, but do know that on particularly cold or snowy mornings your birds will be counting on you for support.
