Ramblings From The Editor

I

Ideas, idle gossip, and occasionally important odds ’n’ ends... by Jack Wright

was recently chatting with a prospective advertiser who runs a cool new business just outside of town. I was rhapsodizing about the charms of Cape May and mentioned that it was on the way to becoming one of THE best places on the East Coast for a Christmas visit. “It could become the East Coast Christmas capital!” I said. “Didn’t you just say a few minutes ago that you hated hyperbole,” my new friend pointed out. And it’s true — I had. And I do. Tourist brochures (and magazine stories) that dabble in groundless fluff pieces are of no use to anyone. “But,” I pointed out, “this isn’t hype. I think Cape May is going to be one of THE Christmas destinations.” So it was nice (as well as vindicating) to see a piece on Travel + Leisure magazine’s website headlined “America’s Best Towns for the Holidays.” There were 25, many in California and Colorado. There were only 10 from the East Coast, and Cape May was in there. Such a shout-out from one of the world’s most respected travel magazines is a good thing. But it’s no surprise to me. First of all, Cape May has the classic Christmassy foundation — a magnificent collection of

BIRD IS THE WORD

Victorian homes that, thanks to the efforts of the Mid-Atlantic Center for the Arts and Humanities (MAC) and energetic B&B owners, are beautifully lit during the holidays and play host to festive tours. There is also a fun range of MAC festive-themed trolley tours. But it’s the much more recent efforts of local hotel owners Cape Resorts that has turned Cape May into Christmas central. That’s because of the remarkable event that is called Winter Wonderland, which runs for a whole month at Congress Hall. The idea of Winter Wonderland might have seemed a bit hare-brained. After all,

why put so much money into an event during a time of year when Cape May goes pretty quiet? Well, here’s the thing — if you build it, they will come. One Saturday last December, Congress Hall’s Brown Room experienced the busiest night of its 12-year existence, ringing up more sales than even a balmy night in August. Go along to Congress Hall this Friday, December 5 from 5-10pm and you’ll see what I mean. The centerpiece is the tree-lighting, beginning around 9pm. There will also be a Christmas concert in the ballroom. And all evening, there’s an old-fashioned carousel for the kids, a shopping village erected around the swimming pool, Santa’s Workshop and rides on the Congress Hall Express. And the next night, you have the 49th annual West Cape May Christmas Parade. So there you have it, a pretty magical Christmas town, wouldn’t you say? Here are this week’s winners of the Clip Art Contest: Jim O’Reilly, Judy Deidrich, Robert Davis, William Wasnak and JoAnn Dick. To enter this week’s contest... well, you all know the drill by now, right? See you at the parade!

The Old Fogey

Y

Ah, those good old Cape May days... by Jackson D’Catur

ou will all have seen the old railway tracks on the beach, uncovered by storms recently, and will have wandered along them, chattering in cheery, ill-informed fashion, as you are prone to do. I know, because I wandered among you, in disguise, listening to the talk of the old passenger line to South Cape May, and how the big storm of ‘23 swept that part of town clean off the map. Or how the line was the start of the Cape May to Philly railroad bridge, built by the great Victorian engineer Isambard Kingdom Brunel, and one of the triumphs of the age until, during its grand opening, the people of Philly, overexcited and under-educated, misread the train timetable and mixed up “arriving” and “departing” and so sent a train over to us, just as the first Cape May Express thundered across to them. Calamity! Also, I hear some talk of the rails being laid by Captain Kidd, to transport 30 years’ plunder from his ship to the secret hiding place. That rumor was the one whispered, and of most interest to those odd fellows

with the metal detectors who wander the beach every week, digging up soda cans, dimes and the occasional WW2 U-boat. The truth, though, is a mix of the mundane and the extraordinary. For sure, the trains did transport munitions out to the remote part of the beach for testing. But they were not driven by local people, or indeed by people at all. No, the trains were driven by chimpanzees, rescued from European zoos just in the nick of time (Adolf Hitler had a deathly fear of monkeys, and would not tolerate them in his Reich) and set to work

in those industries deemed too hazardous for humans. They were a hard-working lot, those apes, and other than one day off a month, on which they would descend on The Brown Room and drink it dry of banana daiquiri before packing into the Beach Cinema to watch “The Mighty Joe Young” on a loop, they did not slack at all. What we did not know, though, is that those monkeys had never forgiven us for being top of the evolutionary heap, and were quietly hiding away ordinance, for the purposes of revolution. Their plan was to steal the train, lob shells at anyone to tried to stop them, and steam up the coast to Wildwood, where they would quickly blend in with the local population. How did we stop them, you ask? Well, I would like to say that Ernie Hemingway and myself, aided by the keen nose of Young Albert (who mistrusts primates) rumbled their plan and rigged their explosives to blow, burying the train and apes in the sand. But I would be lying, dear friends: why, a simple stroll around Wildwood today will give you all the proof of my words.

The Movie Column

T

Tom Sims of the Cape May Film Society reviews the star-studded “Chef”

his is definitely a DVD alert. Chef is one of those rare movies that I get excited about. The film has star power, yet it has an “indie” film feel. I wish I could explain it better. As for the story, it begins with Carl — a five-star chef played by Jon Favreau, who also wrote and directed the film — on one of the most important days in his career. One of the most prominent food bloggers (played by Oliver Platt) is visiting the restaurant where Carl works, and Carl’s boss (Dustin Hoffman) wants him to stick the standard menu. Hoffman plays the perfect nasty restaurant owner. Carl sticks with the normal menu, and he is trashed by the blogger for doing so. He learns from his young son (played by Emjay Anthony) how to read blogs and tweet responses. Carl then tweets choice words to the blogger — or, at least, he thinks he’s tweeting to just the blogger — but he ends up sending the sentiment out to the Twittersphere at large. Words are exchanged both in cyberspace and in real life between the two parties, and Carl

See Chef for the stars... but also for the great acting and plot. It’s a movie trifecta. loses his job. Down and rejected, Carl finally takes the advice of his ex-wife (played by Sofia Vergara) and takes a junker food truck off of her previous ex-husband (played by Robert Downey, Jr). Did I tell you this film has star power? From receiving the food truck in Florida to a road trip back to LA, Carl and his son have time together to learn about one another and just have fun making great Cuban food.

609-884-8700

The melt down scene with Carl and the blogger is excellent, and the scene with Carl and his boss will make anyone squirm. It’s great how social media (namely Twitter) becomes almost a secondary character unto itself during this movie. Lastly, don’t go to this movie hungry. You will only want to eat afterward. Chef is heartfelt and at times moving. Certainly a feel good movie with enough grit to make it interesting. If you missed it in theaters (and I certainly did) you’ll want to catch it on DVD or wherever you get your post-theatrical release fix. On another note, join us on December 8 for Hollywood Holidays at the West Cape May Borough Hall. We’ll present a clip from just about every holiday film ever made, including disasters, warm fuzzies, a collage of Christmas Carols, and of course, Christmas movie music moments. Coffee and cookies, and hot chocolate, will be served. And just after that, mark your calendars for February 22, with our annual Oscar party at the Mad Batter. Trivia, singing, giveaways — there is no better way to celebrate Oscar.

W

Catherine Dugan’s guide to getting out there... this week, wassailing in Cold Cape May

assailing is an ancient tradition of touring the neighborhood during the darkest days of the year. The English word “wassail” comes from the Old Norse “ves heill,” meaning “be healthy,” and it was applied to the practice of visiting neighbors at Christmastime to wish them well. Nobles, especially, treated visitors to fine food and drink, and in return, the people performed songs and toasted the health of the master, his family, his livestock, and his crops — even pouring the wassail punch onto the master’s fruit trees to bring a good yield in the coming spring. In fifteenth century England, wassailers turned the tradition on its head, roaming the streets to bring punch door to door, seeking donations or gifts of food in exchange. Revelers decorated a bowl with rosemary and ribbons and carried it, singing carols and stopping at each home. Occasionally, the wassailers got carried away, demanding cash payments for poor-quality punch, or showing up late at night and badgering homeowners. The tradition of wassailing crossed the Atlantic, but rowdy revelers in New England helped to convince

lawmakers to make such celebrations illegal, and the door-to-door begging tradition moved from Christmas to Halloween, although there are reports of New Yorkers going wassailing well into the twentieth century. Cape May’s Lamplighter Christmas Tours are less rowdy affairs. For each tour, more than a dozen decorated homes, hotels, and churches are opened for self-guided tours. Caroling is not required, but singers and strolling musicians

may inspire you to join in. Visitors are treated to tasty baked goods and warm beverages and shuttled from venue to venue in heated trolleys. The tours run Saturdays, December 6, 13 and 27 from 5:30 to 8:30pm. Tickets are $25 for adults, $20 for children ages 3-12. These tours are limited, so make your reservation by calling MAC at 609-884-5404 or 800-275-4278. You can also buy tickets at the Washington Street Mall Information Booth. Or, for a smaller dose of Christmas cheer, tour Cape May’s Dickensian streets on a thirtyminute Holiday Lights Trolley Ride. As you get lost in the sparkling lights, guides will lead sing-alongs and tell you all about Victorian Christmas traditions. Tickets are $10. The Evening Yuletide tour, for $20, $15 for children, adds a tour of the Emlen Physick Estate and includes treats in the Carriage House Gallery. And, if Dickens is an essential part of your ideal Christmas, the Dickens Extravaganza takes place from Sunday-Tuesday, December 7-9, with lectures, stories, music, jokes, and a little Shakespeare for good measure. Visit the MAC website at capemaymac.org for more information.

The Answer Lady Wise answers to perplexing questions

T

HE Answer Lady invites inquiries from gentle readers on all manner of relationship quandaries, matters of the heart and ethics. If you’d like to send a query, write to info@exitzero.us. Or, simply sit back, enjoy a cup of coffee and contemplate the wisdom herein. Dear Answer Lady My children are very upset with me because when we have family gatherings I take more pictures of the food than I do them. In fact, they couldn’t find any photos of themselves on my smart phone, of the over 500 photos which were on it. What can I say? I like food. I find it far more interesting to photograph than people. Must I compromise my creative license just to please my children? I did my job — I have three fine, responsible adults of whom I am very proud — Bird Dear Bird The Answer Lady is rolling on the f loor imagining you looking with fondness at pictures of spaghetti, completely

ignoring the grandchildren. No matter how old children are, they are still your children and expect their due. Taking one group shot each family gathering will not, we repeat not, subjugate your “creative license.” The Answer Lady, however, is sympathetic to the mentality that you did your job and are now ready to move on to other things. Here’s a suggestion: contact a professional photographer like Aleksey Moryakov or Mary Pat Myers and get a nice beach shot of the whole clan... it will be a

cherished memory for all — you included. Dear Answer Lady My best friend is a dog person. Understand, I like dogs, but when I invite her over to dinner, she brings the dog – in a baby carrier. When we go to yard sales, she brings the dog — in a baby stroller. When we meet for lunch at a restaurant, it has to be a dog-friendly restaurant. Enough already with the dog. Do I have a right to say anything? — Dog Tired Dear Dog Tired Do you have a right to say anything? Absolutely. Will it do any good? Absolutely not. So, what to do about it. Your options are to stop hanging out with her; suggest non-dog friendly restaurants for a change of pace, especially in winter; or, really walk on the wild side and suggest calling the Doggie Nanny for the odd afternoon excursions as your treat. The Answer lady would make the case to your friend that this will be good socialization for her four-legged friend and avoid separation anxiety. On the part of your friend, not the dog.

Enrich Your Life... Adopt An Animal

Three beautiful dogs from the Cape May County Animal Shelter and Adoption Center... call 465-8923

«

PINKY is a fun girl who loves working with people. She is a student in the shelter’s CLASS (mydoghasclass.com) training program where she is learning useful commands that will help her in a forever home. Pinky is also crate trained, which will make her transition to a new home ( your home?) that much smoother.

«

LUCKY is a happy, friendly young lab-retriever mix who is full of energy, smart, and thrilled by long walks. He loves playing fetch and will bring the ball back and sit nicely to fetch again; he’d be a great dog for active people! Lucky is also an excellent student in the shelter’s CLASS training program... very obedient!

«

DESTINY is a pointer mix who is calm and sweet. She loves other dogs and would make an excellent family pet (or an excellent pet for a single person... she’s versatile!). Destiny loves to play, she loves to snuggle, and for the love of all toys squeaky, she’d be a damn good investment. Plus, check out those sweet, sweet eyes... awwww!

Enrich Your Life... Adopt An Animal

Three beautiful cats from the Cape May County Animal Shelter and Adoption Center... call 465-8923

«

COKE is the last of his siblings left at the shelter. The staff felt so bad for him (and liked him so much!) they let him be a floor cat. The cage made him shy, but now Coke can be found on the tops of cages or in one of the shelter’s kitty condos. He would really enjoy meeting you someday... and for your sake as much as it, we hope it’s soon!

«

MAURICE is a loving young boy, who wants to play and run and romp. He can be a little shy at first but once you get to know him, Maurice opens up and becomes the sweetest little guy. Add him to your family... you won’t be sorry. The adoption fee is $70.

«

KIRA had a family once, but they had to surrender her to the shelter because they were moving. She misses having a home because she is the perfect house cat, a little lady! Kira will sit in your lap, sleep in your bed, and always be your bud. Come check her out.. she loves meeting new people, which is just one more reason to love her.

Bird Droppings

M

Dispatches from the nation’s birdwatching capital… by Seymore Thanu

y guess is that there were approximately 150 Gadwall in the South Cape May Meadows on November 10. I bring this to your attention because Gadwall is one very handsome duck, a gentrified duck, the kind of duck you don’t mind your son or daughter going out with. Dressed in dapper gray, when a drake Gadwall steps into the country club they give him a seat near the window. Females look like a trimmer, more petite-billed Mallard. Both sexes flash a white speculum on their wings in flight (blue with white trim on Mallards). Why so many Gadwall in South Cape May? They are common and, now that breeding season is over, they are gathered in flocks in optimal habitat — shallow freshwater ponds or marshes. And since duck hunting is not allowed on the property, ducks are not dissuaded from gathering there. This is not an incitement of hunting or hunters, the fact is that waterfowl numbers are high precisely because duck hunters have supported waterfowl habitat protection through

their purchase of hunting equipment. Gadwall have not always been common in New Jersey. In a discourse presented to members of the New Jersey Audubon Society at Cape May in 1960, the noted Princeton Ornithologist, Charles H Rogers, quoting Witmer Stone’s Birds of New Jersey said this about Gadwall: In 1909 “Rare transient. Individuals are occasionally shot on the coast.” 1937 (status) Unchanged 1955 “...now occurs regularly in small

numbers as a transient along the coast and Delaware Bayshore” and began to nest near Fortesque in 1949.” 1960 “About 500 appeared at Brigantine Refuge in 1955 and four pairs nested there in 1960.” The current status of the duck as established by New Jersey Audubon’s BIRDS OF NEW JERSEY 1999 is summarized as follows: “Uncommon and local summer resident, common spring and fall migrant, uncommon to fairly common winter resident.” Conservationists are always being painted as all doom and gloom. Actually there is much to celebrate on the conservation front. So as I write this piece on the eve of Thanksgiving I want to express my thanks to the many right-thinking individuals and organizations that helped craft the bird-rich environment we enjoy today. So go out and take a gander at this aristocratic duck and give a little thanks for the good fortune that is ours. Hint to Gadwall viewers: Approach flocks slowly and from the down-wind side.
