Subscriber Of The Week
Each week, we will feature a lucky subscriber (and Exit Zero T-shirt winner!) in this spot. This week’s subscriber: David Carroll of Scranton, PA. How long have you been coming to Cape May? Since before my oldest daughter Lauren was born, and she is now 23. Who are you normally with? We come as a family — my husband Dan and our three daughters Lauren, Kathleen and Kimberly. Favorite thing about Cape May? Everything, from the beach and lighthouse to the people, and the events at Congress Hall. Least favorite thing? I don’t think I have a least favorite thing about Cape May. Favorite restaurants? George’s Place, Back Corner Cafe, Cape Orient, and the CView Inn for wings. Favorite place to stay? We stay seasonally at Holly Shores Campground, and at Christmas rent a house on Sunset Boulevard. If you could change one thing about Cape May, what would it be? No smoking on the beach. Favorite thing about Exit Zero? I love seeing familiar faces and places in Exit Zero. Least favorite thing about Exit Zero? I don’t have a least favorite thing about the magazine. What’s your T-shirt size? I take a size medium in a T-shirt — thanks!
Facebook Mystery Contest KNOW your way around Cape May? Check out the photograph above, prepared by our resident cryptographer Kate Chadwick. If you think you know what establishment this is, you could win a gift certificate to spend at a local business. Random Factoid
“Oh, life is a glorious cycle of song, A medley of extemporanea; And love is a thing that can never go wrong; And I am Marie of Romania.” — Dorothy Parker “What the heart thinks, the tongue speaks.” — Romanian proverb
TRANSYLVANIA is a region in Romania, but before World War I it belonged to Hungary. The region was long disputed by the two governments. Today there are many Hungarians still living in Transylvania and other Hungarian areas, comprising the largest minority group in Europe living in one nation.

Upcoming can’t-miss events around town...mark your calendars
F
RESH off the heels (get it — heels?) of the Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show, the Cape May County Dog Obedience Training Club is puttin’ on the dog. (Get it? Puttin’ on the dog?) This winter has brought one of their largest classes yet – 13 dogs in the Puppy Class, 18 Beginners, and five Advanced good dogs will be showing off their skills at the Dog Training Classes Graduation on Tuesday, March 6 at 6:30pm at the West Cape May Fire Hall. Whether you’ve got a dog in this fight (get it?) or you’re just an admirer, stop by and check out these mutts as they strut their stuff. And while you’ve got the calendar out, might as well save the date for the 6th Annual Mutt Strut on the Cape May promenade on Saturday, September 15, 8am– noon. The rain date will be September 16. THERE will be an American Red Cross Blood Drive on Friday, March 9, from 1-7pm, sponsored by and held at the Cape Island Masonic Lodge #30, which is located at 1105 Seashore Road in Cold Spring. PLEASE consider giving the gift of
³
life by donating blood – it’s so critical yet such an easy thing to do. Every two seconds, someone in the United States needs blood. So don’t be a baby – roll up your sleeve and possibly save a life. If you need more information, please contact David Perry, Jr at perry3tcnj@yahoo.com, or the American Red Cross at www.redcross.org. Cape May Traditional Jazz Society will present Midiri Brothers Dixieland Jazz, featuring Joe Midiri on clarinet in this outstanding and popular group, on Sunday, March 11, from 2-4pm at the VFW on Congress Street. One of the top traditional jazz bands in America today, this is a can’t-miss event for music lovers – not to mention a bargain AND a good deed rolled into one. A measly ten bucks (that’s $10!) gets you in the door, and the proceeds will be donated to the Food Bank of Southern New Jersey. There will be free parking, a cash bar, and an optional dinner at 4:30. Come out and enjoy some great music for a good cause. For more information, visit www. capemaytraditionaljazzsociety.com, or call 609-846-7667.

YOU oughta be in pictures. Or at least, you oughta be on stage. Did you ever think so? Now is your chance to find out. East Lynne Theater Company will be holding auditions for its summer/fall season 2012, with three audition days of open calls for Equity actors – two in Cape May, and one in the Big Apple. On Saturday, March 17, from noon-4pm, and Monday, March 19, from 1-5pm, the call will be at the theater’s venue, The First Presbyterian Church, 500 Hughes Street. The New York call will be held on April 10 at the Actors’ Equity Audition Center. Artistic Director, Gayle Stahlhuth, will be at all auditions and is directing all of the productions. For more information or to learn more about the company, please visit www.eastlynnetheater. org. DON’T forget the PAL Comedy Night Social on Friday, March 23 from 7-10pm at the West Cape May Fire Hall. Light fare, beer and wine provided by Lucky Bones. Doors open at 7, comedians start at 8. So have a few laughs while supporting the excellent work of the Police Athletic League.

Talk Of The Town
Ramblings, idle gossip, and occasionally important odds ’n’ ends
Rolling Out The Red Carpet PEOPLE are still telling us how much they missed Exit Zero during our “sabbatical.” Thanks for that, but the truth is we spent those five weeks holed up in the office, working like busy freaking bees. And we’re still really busy. This is why, when we heard that the Cape May Film Society’s pre-Oscar party was going to be held at the Mad Batter on February 26, our first reaction was: It’s time for the Oscars already?! Time f lies when you’re up to your eyeballs in deadlines. All the more reason for us to get away from our desks, put on our red carpet threads and head for the party. That, and the Executive Director of the Cape May Film Festival, Tom Sims, enticed us by saying there would be plenty of movies given away this night — some great ones, and some “really terrible” ones. We showed up around 6pm, and although there wasn’t a soul on the street, the Mad Batter was lively. All twenty-five bar stools were occupied with folks enjoying beer and cosmopolitans — the most popular drink of the night. We were a little surprised by this; we were expecting a Champagne kind of evening. It’s the Academy Awards, after all. Then again, we were also expecting the Mad Batter to be packed with faaaaabulous (5 As) people walking around in faaaaabulous clothing. Who did we think you’d be wearing? Dolce & Gabbana. Who were you actually wearing? You had no idea. “I’m wearing… uh… clothes,” said Congress Hall employee Dennis Zaitsev, dressed in an orange sweater and jeans. “I’m wearing… uh… black,” said a
schoolteacher named Mike Hayko, who was, indeed, wearing a black button-up. “I’m wearing my fabulous Cape May Film Society sweatshirt,” said Tom. Even the one gentleman we saw sporting a bowtie, Bob Maher, had chosen to pair the accessory with a tangerine-colored… sweatshirt. So our town isn’t exactly full of fashion divas. (It takes me five minutes to get ready on a regular night,” Virginia Hotel employee Lance Vogel told us. “But it takes me eleven minutes on an Oscar night.”) This only makes us love you more, Cape May. We think you look damn good in your jeans, and we love that you can party hard for a good cause, even on a red carpet that’s duct-taped to the ground. And this was definitely a good cause. After devouring a slice of portabella mushroom pizza (our compliments to the chef), we chased after Dottie Knapp, the president of the Cape May Film Society. “I’m hoping we’ll take on a bigger role this year,” she told us. “Since the Beach Theater is down, there is nowhere to watch movies, so we’re looking to provide that all year round.” In addition to the upcoming film festival, Dottie says to be on the lookout for silent film screenings, “home video” gettogethers, film camps for kids and possibly even a camp for seniors. “There isn’t anyone my age with a camera,” she told us, “who doesn’t sit there and go, ‘Why isn’t it working?’ because they’ve forgotten to take the lens cap off, or they’ve forgotten to turn it on.” To be alerted of upcoming events, Dottie recommends becoming a Film Society member by logging on to their website at njstatefilmfestival.com, and entering your email. It’s free… but the
real reason to join? “If you’re watching a comedy by yourself,” Dottie said, “you’re not laughing; you need someone else to find the laughter with you, or to cry with you. It’s more fun that way... especially if someone else makes the popcorn.” Finding the laugher, we noticed, was not something the folks at the Mad Batter were struggling with this night. You all hooted and hollered each time Tom called the name of a DVD giveaway winner…or loser, depending on how you look at it. (Tom wasn’t kidding when he called some of the films “terrible.” We think we’ll pass on The Monster Maker and Dementia 13.) All in all, it was a good night, right up until 8pm when everyone shuffled out, presumably to watch the awards show in the comfort of their own homes. We, however, headed back to work. We told you — really busy.
Breaking With Convention WHEN the news broke about a petition calling for the name of Convention Hall to be changed to Mariners Hall, some of us felt exhausted by the thought of it. Yes, it’s been important to get involved with all of the debate surrounding this — the largest project Cape May has undertaken in decades. But how much squabbling can one stomach? Has the city ventured from its original design? Will this building jeopardize Cape May’s national historic landmark designation? Is a portable stage really the way to go? And is the city really shelling out $85,000 for the Philadelphia Pops? These are all valid questions, and each of them DO carry a great deal of weight for our town...

THE EXIT ZERO CARTOON... By Laurie Bender
If you would like to join the movement, log on to www.Change.org and search for Mariners Hall. If you don’t, then at least respect the spirit of the petition — there’s been enough squabbling over this building.
Going Romanian
THE EXIT ZERO STORE & GALLERY EXPANSION ON SUNSET BOULEVARD GETS A LITTLE OUT OF HAND.
Talk Of The Town ? From Page 13 but at this point — two years in — even broaching the subject of Contention Hall feels draining to some. But that’s exactly the point, according to Ben Miller, our Historical Editor and the instigator of this petition. “The city tried to please a great deal of people and, in the end, ended up pleasing very few,” Ben told us. “There is going to be a great deal of hurt feelings on opening day.” But a careful renaming of the building might be just the thing to “ease some of those hard feelings and bring people back together.” That’s something we can get behind. It might feel at first like just another Convention Hall-related debate waiting to happen, but in reality, it could be more like the first step toward a peaceful new beginning. Ben sugested Mariners Hall because — no matter one’s opinions on politics or Pops or portable stages — we can all agree on the importance of honoring not only
Cape May’s maritime history, but the men and women who’ve served on the water, as commercial fishermen, and members of the navy and coast guard. “It’s easy to sit and eat the scallops and the clams and not think about the folks who’ve given their lives, or continue risking their lives,” Ben said. “This is where the bay meets the Atlantic. Some of the most dangerous waters around are right off our shores.” But what about folks looking to have events here, we wanted to know. Wouldn’t the name Mariners Hall sound just a tad too... fishy... for, say, a bride looking at wedding venues? “It’s nautical,” Ben said. “It’s Cape May.” Fair enough. City Manager Bruce MacLeod did not respond to our request for an official comment. Which is, sadly, not so surprising.
ROMANIAN women are known for their pulchritude. (That’s beauty if you don’t feel like Googling it.) And while genetics are largely a toss of the dice, the holy trinity of eating right, exercise and getting enough sleep can go a long way. And failing that, a great haircut can carry the day. Hence, we took ourselves over to Shear Sunsations for a badly-needed trim and some good oldfashioned girl time. Shear Sunsations has been in the same location for more than thirty years, right across from the C-View and next to Big Wave Burrito. And you don’t really get to stay in business that long unless you know what you’re doing. It still has kind of a throwback feel to it — no thumping dance music and spray-tanning services here. Haircuts, coloring, perms, blow-outs, highlighting, mani-pedis are the order of the day. We put ourselves in the chair — and in the eminently capable hands — of Megan Weatherby, whose mom, Marie Conway, owns the place. “My aunt used to own it years ago, but she retired and moved to Florida, then my mom took over.” We asked what that was like, working with family, what with all the risk of hair-pulling. “I love working with my mom, but we have different ideas from time to time,” Megan told us. What about the future? “I’ll likely take over some day, once my mom retires,” she says. And after that? “Well, my four-year-old son has spent some time here. The other day he was pulling tape off of something and said ‘Look, Mom — I’m waxing.’ So it’s possible he’ll be involved some day, too.” If you’d like a relaxing experience in a cozy, family-like atmosphere the next time you need to get beautiful, do yourself a favor and visit the family at Shear Sunsations. In fact, tell them you read about them here when you book your appointment and they’ll give you ten percent off your service. We highly recommend it – loved our new ’do, and left there feeling positively…well, Romanian.
PARTING SHOT If you’re particularly lacking in observational skills, you may have failed to notice the four pages advertising the heck out of a special event which is today, Thursday: The Grand Opening of the new Exit Zero Store and Gallery. But surely you can’t miss the wonderful cartoon above. In any event, you are ALL invited to the party, from 5-8pm at our joint, on Sunset Boulevard. See you there!

A Moment In History Historical Editor Ben Miller continues his look at Cape May’s Urban Renewal Movement
T
HIS historical article from the July 4, 1897 Philadelphia Inquirer is a great slice of history for two reasons. The first is the description of Henry Clay’s visit to Cape May and his stay at the Mansion House hotel, which stood on the north side of what is now the 300 block of Washington Street. People went crazy when Henry Clay visited, especially young women who were taken by his attractive good looks. Reports have been written about them coming to him on the beach with a pair of scissors, to secure a lock of his hair as a souvenir. The other aspect of this article that makes it unique is that it’s one of the few to mention slaves in Cape May. The second half of the article talks about earlier days on the island when Southern plantation owners came to the city with “Countless slaves to attend to every want.” It’s a dirty little secret out of Cape May’s past, there WERE slaves in Cape May. It was considered commonplace at one time for southern visitors to bring slaves with them. Remember that when you visit an inn or cottage with third-floor “Servants’ Quarters.” Many of those servants were considered property.

The Inside Scoop On City Hall
A user’s guide to Cape May City Council meetings... by Kate Chadwick and Diane Stopyra
H
ERE’S something you probably never thought you’d hear us say: we wish the council meeting on February 21 had been longer. Thirty-five minutes isn’t much time to work with for the usual side-splitting hilarity that occurs at these shindigs. Okay... city council meetings are never all that funny. But sheesh, they’re never THIS bad. Apologies in advance, folks. They can’t all be a hoot. 7:01 — City Clerk Diane Weldon, wearing a patterned dress (brownish – cheetah? Leopard, maybe?) takes the roll. Everyone is present except for Deputy Mayor Jack Wichterman. We don’t realize as yet how much he contributes to the humor in this column, but even in absentia he manages to provide some laughs. Clerk Diane calls Wichterman’s name, then accidentally leaves out Councilmember Murray. That’s funny, right? 7:02 — The Pledge of Allegiance. 7:03 — Mayor Ed Mahaney, wearing a pale gray jacket and polka-dot tie, announces that the city is submitting a Local Blue Acres Floodplain Acquisition Application to the
New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection. To help explain this, he introduces consultant Jim Rutala, who apparently is the guy responsible for helping acquire a grant from Walmart to secure a small wind turbine to cut down costs and “add to the curriculum” at Cape May City Elementary. Your reporters love wind turbines because they make us think of Don Quixote. 7:04 — Jim, dressed in a charcoal suit and pink shirt, takes the podium. He says we’re all already familiar with the Green Acres program, in which the city has long been involved
(sort of, but we ARE familiar with the Green Acres television series), and that Blue Acres is a division of this. The city is hoping this program, which provides grants to the coastal areas of barrier islands that are flood-prone for recreation and conservation purposes, will provide a grant worth 50% of the property value (or in this case, $800,000) for the “vacant parcel” next to Vance’s Tavern on Lafayette Street. What, exactly, will happen to this land if we get the grant? No one said. But your reporters can’t help but grumble; that land is our secret summer parking spot. Okay, okay… conservation and recreation is probably more important. 7:08 — Time for ordinances for introduction! On deck is 248-2012, the ordinance to exceed the Municipal Budget appropriations limits and to establish a cap bank. The mayor introduces Leon Costello, the City Auditor, to explain this. Costello, who is wearing a light gray suit, has his back to us for the majority of the time he speaks, so we cannot discuss his tie with any authority. He says the name of the ordinance is “misleading,” because no

one is asking to exceed the budget. “We’re reserving the right to bank in case, down the road, it’s needed.” 7:11 — Mayer Mahaney says, “Clerk, call the roll.” (Uh, call the roll, PLEASE? Mind your Ps and Qs, mayor.) The clerk accidentally calls Deputy Mayor Wichterman’s name, which prompts Mayer Mahaney to say, “You really miss Mr Wichterman, don’t you?” This elicits some guffaws from the (three) audience members, as your reporters picture a scandalous tryst between Weldon and Wichterman which we probably shouldn’t do. 7:15 — It’s time to discuss Resolution 62-02, approving the local municipal budget. Mayor Mahaney asks that Mr Costello give the public an overview of where the budget stands now. “You had a full presentation to the public,” Costello says, “and there haven’t been any changes since that time.” On March 20, there will be a hearing for the public to comment on the budget, and between now and then, “you can suggest changes.” On the 20th, “you can pass as is, you can make changes and pass, or you can make changes and not pass.” Leon adds that there has been a “standard” 1.1 percent tax increase, that the city is well within the spending and levy cap, that “we’re pretty sure state aid isn’t changing,” and that the percentage of collection is “a little bit better than last year,” which is “a good thing.” 7:16 — Councilmember Terri Swain, wearing a grayish, olive-ish turtleneck sweater dress, very comfy-looking, asks about how Governor Christie’s recent budget cuts will affect state employees. It is then explained, in a nutshell, that government employee contributions have and will continue to be affected by the governor’s budget cuts. This is approximately as exciting to type as it was to listen to… 7:17 — Mayer Mahaney asks the City Clerk if she would like to read a proclamation for Read Across America, which says the
city of Cape May “stands firmly committed to” helping our children become “the best readers in the world.” The world? Well, that seems a bit lofty. But hey, we’re all for ambition, and we know that Cape May kids are smart (although we did see one of them skateboarding through traffic this morning). The proclamation says that all citizens are called to, if at all possible, devote their time to helping a child read on March 2, in honor of Dr Suess’ birthday. 7:19 — It’s time for ordinances for public hearing and adoption! On deck is Ordinance 247-2011 to update the uniform salary and classification plan for the Department of Personnel positions in the City of Cape May. City Manager Bruce MacLeod, wearing a dark suit with a bright blue shirt and a patterned tie, is asked to explain that, but we don’t find his explanation very… well… explanatory. “The updating of the salary ordinance,” MacLeod says, “quite often is to bring it into compliance with the contracts we have negotiated over the course of time.” 7:22 — Now is the motion to open the public hearing. But since no one speaks for or against, Mayor Mahaney says, “Clerk, call the roll.” (Uh, clerk call the roll, PLEASE. Dammit, Mahaney.) 7:23 — Time for resolutions! First up is 63-02-2012 approving the certified list of — ready for this? — Length of Service Award Program (LOSAP) Qualified City of Cape May Volunteer Fire Department members for the year 2011. Mayor Mahaney says there are 14 members who met the criteria last year. Resolution 64-02-2012 approves an electronics communications policy for Cape May City Council. Resolution 65-02-2012 A is for the payment of bills, except Swain’s Hardware. Resolution 65-02-2012 B is also for the payment of bills, which includes Swain’s Hardware — Councilmember Swain abstains from this vote, natch. Resolution 66-02-2012 is to establish a policy to negotiate use

Thursday, March 1, 2012 The Inside Scoop On City Hall ? From Page 24 and rental agreements, contracts with vendors and performers and ticketing prices and policies and procedures for use of Convention Hall. Mayor Mahaney says council thinks it appropriate for the City Manager and the Director of Marketing and Communications to negotiate contracts, because this “will be fair and equitable to all parties.” He says there is a system of checks and balances built in, including that City Attorney Anthony Monzo will look at all contracts from a legal standpoint. He notes that council still “reserves the right to be involved in special arrangements such as the Stockton partnership agreement.” Oh, we see… council wants in on the fun contracts. 7:27 — Time to pass resolutions. City Clerk Diane Weldon accidentally calls Concilmember Wichterman’s name again. Mayor Mahaney says to her “Still trying to get Mr Wichterman to vote, huh?,” then calls out to the gentleman videotaping the proceedings in the back: “Ralph, make an extra copy of tonight’s tape for Jack. He’ll look at it four or five times at home.” And the crowd goes wild. 7:28 — Time for licenses. The Christ Child Society needs three (those greedy church folk) for an event at The Grand on April 29 — a 50/50, merchandise and off-premise raffle license. The Mid-Atlantic Center for the Arts also needs a raffle license for events on September 21 and November 11 at the Cape May Lutheran Church. 7:29 — Council accepts minutes from their really important sounding “Closed Executive Session.” Your reporters wonder what kind of super-secret things happen at these closed executive sessions – ouija boards and popcorn, perhaps! Oooh, popcorn. 7:31 — Time for new business. City Attorney Anthony Monzo, looking dapper in a black suit and periwinkle colored shirt (boy do your reporters love a man in periwinkle), says Bill 1338 is making its way through the state legislature, which, if
we understood correctly, extends the expiration date of certain permits. Bruce MacLeod chimes in to say that tomorrow, the city will be receiving bids for portable stage decks at noon in this very auditorium, and City Clerk Diane Weldon says the school board election will be moving to November. City Council elections, she adds, will be held this year in November instead of May, and there is one mayor position and one councilmember position open. Your reporters briefly contemplate running for mayor, but only if there’s popcorn at those executive closed sessions. 7:32 — Councilmember Deanna Fiocca, looking lovely in an eggplant sweater and black slacks, says Convention Hal “looks great, but there’s been a lot of trash building up from [the construction workers’] lunches and snacks.” She asks if someone shouldn’t do something about that. (Or maybe the builders could just stop trashing the place!) Mayor Mahaney asks Bruce MacLeod to take care of that, and your reporters picture the City Manager picking up trash. And then planting flowers, while we’re at it. 7:35 — And we’re done! At 7:35! It doesn’t feel right, somehow, so your reporters linger for a bit. We chit-chat with the reporter from that OTHER paper, The Star and Wave, about whether that was him we saw while swimming recently at the Cape May Elementary Pool (it wasn’t, but it looked like him). “Little kids pee in pools,” he says. Duly noted, sir. Over and out.

The Movie Column
W
By Tom Sims, Executive Director of the Cape May Film Festival
ho doesn’t admire Jersey girl Meryl Streep’s acting? She’s been nominated 17 times for an Oscar, and has become one of only two actors to win more than twice. She has great range, tremendous depth, and delivers nearly every time. Her performance as Margaret Thatcher in The Iron Lady was certainly one of those times. This past year seems to have been bogged down with lots of biographical films. There were famous portrayals, such as Marilyn Monroe, and the semi-famous, such as Oakland A’s baseball manager Billy Beane. What will they do next? A film about quirky FBI kingpin J. Edgar Hoover? Oh wait, yes, they did do that one. Of all the biographical explorations in the past year, The Iron Lady could have been better—but wasn’t. Yet it wasn’t the worst (thank J. Edgar for that). It was entertaining, but like most of the films in the last year, really didn’t pop. Audiences agree, as do most critics. However, it’s more than just Streep’s performance that makes this film
Meryl Streep snagged her 17th Best Actress nod for The Iron Lady worth seeing. Indeed it is a story weaved nicely between present day and the historic. Or should I say the hysteric (meaning the psychoneurotic disorder—not laughing out loud). Thatcher sees the ghost of her husband, Denis Thatcher, in her old age. It’s the thread woven throughout the story, and what gives

the movie a sense of humanity. Margaret Thatcher came from the humble beginnings, according to this account, of a grocer’s daughter. She fought to get ahead in a maledominated political process with Denis one of her truest allies from the start. Given the choice between watching a film about England’s royalty (such as last year’s The King’s Speech and 2006’s The Queen) and its underdogs, who do you think I’d rather watch? I guess maybe the only exception I’d make is watching a film about royalty from humble beginnings. Let’s hope Hollywood does a good job with the film apparently in the works about Princess Diana. After seeing The Iron Lady, you leave the theater thinking, “That was good.” A day later, you’ve forgotten about it. Such is the Hollywood standard for 2011. Here’s to a better 2012! The first person to email capemayfilm@ hotmail.com with the name of the only other actress to win an Oscar more than twice wins a VIP Pass to this year’s Film Festival (October 19-21). For two passes, name the New Jersey town where Streep was born. Good luck!

What’s Your Story?
Every week, we ask: Who the heck are you and what are you doing here? Who are you? My name is Liz Hodge. Where are you from? I’ve been in Cape May since 1980. Now, I own the McDonald’s in North Cape May. Do you eat at McDonald’s? Yes, I do. Where are you now? I’m at Collier’s Liquor Store. What were you doing when we interrupted you? Playing the lottery. And what will you do with the money if you win? I’d donate a lot of it. There are three major charities I contribute to: The Nature Conservancy of Cape May, the US Humane Society, the local animal shelter. Oh, and Best Friends in Utah, which rehabilitated many of the Michael Vick dogs. Where are you headed now? Home. I’ve been doing renovations on my house for four months, and I need to make sure everything is working properly. If we gave you a ticket to Romania, would you take it? Probably. Sleeping Around
Every week, we test the beds of Cape May’s hotels and inns. This week... The Angel Of The Sea. WHERE IS IT? The Angel of the Sea is located at 5 Trenton Avenue, but it’s where the inn USED to be — at the site of the current post office — that makes for an interesting story. William Weightman, the man who discovered quinine, had the building split in two so it could be moved to a spot with a great ocean view... and then they couldn’t put it back together. WHAT IS IT? The inn is a two-piece traditional Victorian that was built in 1850. It looks, as one reviewer put it, “like a debutante in a pink dress with white lace.” WHO RUNS IT? The inn’s been owned by Laurie Whissel for the last twenty-two years. She operates it with her smiley staff of 15. HOW MANY ROOMS? There are twenty-seven rooms, all with a calming sort of vibe. It’s the Angel Suites — those with spectacular ocean views — we loved the most. WHAT’S THE VIBE? That depends on which room you’re in. Some are light and beachy, done with wicker furniture. Others are more masculine, complete with dark
and mysterious woods. AMENITIES? Everything you need: private baths, free wi-fi, sweeping porches and balconies, bicycles, beach chairs and our favorite: an outdoor shower. WHAT’S THE BED LIKE? Your bed might be a sleigh bed. It might have wicker posts. It might have an iron headboard. But chances are, the mattress is brandspanking new. We slept (very soundly) on a king-size Serta mattress with 1600-count Egyptian cotton sheets. WHAT’S FOR BREAKFAST? You probably don’t want to read this if you’re feeling
at all hungry. We had port-wine poached pears, fresh fruit, a melba sauce muffin, and sherry fried eggs with parmesan cheese over a toasted English muffin and a side of brown sugar clove ham. Told you. OTHER REFRESHMENTS? Everyday, afternoon tea is served at 4:00pm. At 5:30pm, they also do wine and cheese, complete with homemade baked goods. Beside a roaring fire, we tried our hardest not to indulge in the gooey rum cake that was staring at us. INSIDER TIP: First, children under eight are not accommodated here, so don’t worry about whippernsappers ruining your quiet getaway. Second, make time to stop by the gift shop, complete with mermaidthemed jewelry and, of course, angels. The latter have been “f lying off the shelves” according to front-desk attendant, Mary, no pun intended. RANDOM FACT: The renovation of The Angel of the Sea took 103,000 man hours of labor. EACH week, Exit Zero will be ambushing unsuspecting and deserving citizens with a beautiful bouquet of flowers from a local florist. All you have to do is answer a question or two by our roving photographer, Gabi Urda. This week’s lucky recipient is Aubrey Winarski, who was ambushed while walking along the Washington Street Mall around sunset. Where are you from? I’m from Williamstown, New Jersey. Occupation: Set-up supervisor at Congress Hall. What were you doing when we interrupted? Just walking to work. When is the last time you got some flowers? I never got flowers before! And I’ll probably give them to my girlfriend. PHOTO BY GABI URDA... FLOWERS BY KATE’S

The Answer Lady
T
Wise answers to perplexing questions
HE Answer Lady invites inquiries from gentle readers on all manner of relationship quandaries, matters of the heart and ethics. If you’d like to send a query, write to info@exitzero.us. Dear Answer Lady I am pregnant with our second child — we already have a son. I have a feeling this new baby is going to be a girl, but my husband absolutely has his heart set on another boy. He won’t even discuss girls’ names, and even went to Cape May Sports Memorabilia to buy vintage baseball cards for decorating the nursey. We are going for an ultrasound in a couple of weeks and I don’t know how he is going to react if (okay, when) they say it’s a girl. What can I do? —Pregnant Pause Dear Pregnant This reminds the Answer Lady of when she was expecting her second child, and her own husband also had his heart set on another son. While he wasn’t acting quite as idiotic as your husband seems to be acting, the Answer Lady found it pretty amusing when the ultrasound technician pronounced
the Answer Baby was a girl. The Answer Lady’s husband was so stunned, it was as if the technician had announced “You’re having a Golden Retriever.” Of course, said husband is now wrapped so completely around his daughter’s finger it’s quite ridiculous. The Answer Lady jests that your husband is being an idiot — he thinks he knows what he wants, but as John Lennon said, life is what happens when we’re busy making other plans. And it’s lovely that he has taken an interest in the decoration of the nursery. Let’s hope he is equally
interested in diaper-changing and midnight feedings. Dear Answer Lady My wife is amazing. She works full-time, is a wonderful cook, and a great mom to our three kids. She has hobbies, goes to the gym, finds time for a monthly girls’ night for a group of good friends. I’m getting worried, though, because lately the housework is slipping. She has mentioned getting a housecleaning service twice a month, and while we can afford it, technically, I feel like the money could be better spent elsewhere. What are your thoughts? Dear Innkeeper The Answer Lady’s first thought is that you, sir, are an idiot. (Two-for-one on idiots in today’s column, dear readers.) There is a gaping hole in your letter where your list of contributions to the household maintenance should appear. While it warms the Answer Lady’s cold heart that you enumerate your wife’s positive attributes, the woman is telling you in no uncertain terms that she is quite over the housekeeping. Either call Good Housekeepers or strap on an apron.

The Old Fogey
I
Ah, those good old Cape May days... by Jackson D’Catur
AM TOLD by my faithful manservant, Kitchener, that we have a surplus of Romans in Cape May right now, and that I am to write on the subject. Well, let me tell you, there are things about the Romans I admired: their discipline, their laws and their attention to the importance of public bathing, but on the whole, they were a beastly lot, prone to march into a country, kill anyone who dared to say “boo” (or “boo-ius” in the Latin of the time) and then tax the hell out of them. Plus, their dreadful behavior at Carthage, well, let me tell you as a veteran of that conflict that the Romans were not models of decency. And don’t get me started on the Crucifiction… hold on, what’s that, Kitchener? Not Romans, but Romulans, you say? Why you oaf, I’ve just wasted 146 words (and counting) dictating this to you, no don’t take THIS down, you fool! Anyway, where was I, ah yes, Romulans. Well, I admit their ladies were an intriguing, flashing-eyed lot of temptresses, and their lithe young men just delightful on the eye, but really, the trouble they gave
James T Kirk was way out of proportion to their appeal. I cannot say I am best pleased to have them in our fair city with their licentious ways. What next? Klingons? I shall take this to the council right away, and demand a message to Star Fleet to … what? Kitchener, are you seeking a thrashing? NOT Romulans? What the Dickens am I supposed to be writing about? Did you not listen to that rotund Scotch editor when he called to brief you? What? Yes I KNOW he’s indistinct and has awful gram-
mar, but really, you have faced down Zulus, Hottentots, Huns and Germans without issue, I think you can deal with a boorish savage. What? Romanies? Well, then … where was I? Ah yes, I loved those Romanies, with their gorgeous painted wagons and colorful pantaloons, their flashing gold earrings and their swaggering ways. Once, I had them tell my fortune and damn my eyes if the old crone did not accurately predict my Moon Landing (“you will travel far”), my military conquest of Bolivia (“you will fight. And possibly win”) and possibly my founding of Cape May itself, though this one was a little ambiguous (“I see an overly ornate city of wood, by the sea, with a walk of board and an elephant of wood. I see hordes of muscled men in tiny bathing suits, giggling, and a house of pancakes and a man called Bill”). Why, I once met a Romany lady who …what? Kitchener, you are too much! NOT Romanies? Then what? What? Romanians? Who? Those callow youths I see loafing around, scowling handsomely? They should smile more.

Activity Of The Week
F
A weekly column by Catherine Dugan. This week: The play’s the thing.
or most of the year, Cape May theater-lovers follow Tallulah Bankhead’s advice, “Don’t be an actress, darling. Be an audience.” Theater lovers in town for the next few weeks, however, stand behind the curtain. The East Lynne Theater Company (ELTC) offers a Playwriting Get-Away on March 2-3. Cape May Stage offers free acting workshops during the first few weeks of March. The ELTC workshop focuses on tenminute plays, a genre created by the Actor’s Theatre of Louisville in 1977. Short plays have been around for a long time — probably beginning in Greece around 500 BC as skits between longer works. In the Middle Ages, short Biblical plays were used in church services. Soon secular short pieces emerged, with stock characters who could be understood without lengthy exposition. By Shakespeare’s time, when sophisticated, full-length plays were in vogue, short plays remained popular at the royal court. Most playwrights, from Anton Chekhov to Mark Twain, have dabbled in short plays, even as they continued working in other forms.
Ten-minute plays are short, but dramatic. The playwright must introduce a character, throw her off balance, and add complications. The main character undergoes a major change within ten minutes’ time. Ten-minute plays are popular with small theater companies, since they draw large audiences without requiring large casts or extensive sets.
ELTC’s Artistic Director Gayle Stahlhuth will lead the Playwriting Get-Away, with “exercises to trigger the imagination,” at the Henry Sawyer Inn, beginning Friday, March 2. Work continues on Saturday, with plays read aloud by ELTC actors on Saturday night. The cost is $399 for two people and $299 for one, which includes accommodations, breakfast, afternoon tea and treats, and the workshop fee. The fee for the workshop alone is $150. For more information about the Playwriting Get-Away, contact ELTC at 609-884-5898. Performers get their chance, too, as Cape May Stage offers, “Taking Center Stage,” an introduction to live theater. Artistic Director Roy Steinberg will lead the hour-long workshops at several locations in Cape May County on March 5, 6, 12 and 19. Learn about the backstage world of lighting, sets, costumes, and onstage skills like character development, voice, movement and improvisation. No previous experience is required, and all ages are welcome. Advance registration is suggested, and more information is available at (609) 884-1341. Next week: Chili and Chowder Wars

Name: Ioan Oarga. Occupation: Breakfast manager, Marquis de Lafayette, and server at The Washington Inn. Age: I’m 32. Hometown: I am from Romania. How long have you worked here? This is my seventh year at both places. Best thing about the job? Meeting different people every single day. I could never work in an office. And I love learning about wine. What do you recommend here? At the Marquis, I recommend hanging out at the bar in the pool area. At the Washington Inn, I recommend the crab cakes and the rack of lamb. What’s your OTHER dream job? Either a sommelier or running my own business. Favorite thing about Cape May? I love that is such a quiet, relaxing town. And the beach! VANCE Matthews, who lives in Erma, helped the Lower Cape May Regional Tigers defeat Ocean City on February 3rd. The son of Sarah and Mike “demanded” the ball during a time out. After the game resumed, Matthews caught the ball by the three point line and scored the winning layup with 3.3 seconds left on the clock. The varsity player is confident on and off the floor. As the senior captain, Matthews says he leads by example. He even referred to himself as an “on the floor coach” because he helps out and understands the game. Not only is Matthews the boys’ basketball captain, he is also an excellent football player. For both he and his older sister Alex, a former basketball player at LCMR, sports and training have always been a big part of life. Matthews still manages to get good grades despite all of the time he spends working out and training for his two sports. “I’ve been trained to get up early, stay up late, and work on no sleep,” said Matthews. Although basketball is a big part of his life, Matthews wants to take his football career to the next level and will hopefully be playing at the University of Delaware next year. SAM is patiently waiting for a forever home. He is a one-year-old boxerAmerican bulldog mix, who is just a tad hard of hearing. Sam is a sweet little guy who enjoys car rides, knows several basic commands and loves to play, of course. Sam doesn’t always know his own strength, so a home without children is best. If you think you might be this pup’s lucky new owner, come meet him. The adoption fee is $95.
«
BUCKY, a two-year-old, 67 pound boy, was found wandering the streets. Sadly, his owner never claimed him, and we can’t understand why; he’s a good boy. Bucky is shy at first, but it doesn’t take him long to bond. He needs some training, but he’s eager to learn. Though he does fine with other dogs, he isn’t fond of cats and, because he doens’t know his own strength, a home without children is best. The adoption fee is $95.
We are not out of our minds... You asked and we delivered! • Root touch-up $35* • Haircut/style $28* • T-zone hilites $35* • Other color specials online! • Keratin special $50 off • 50-minute massage: $35 plus tax • Manicures $10 Please enjoy, as these are prices you can’t afford to miss! *For new hair clients only. Established hair clients will have their own special promo; just ask your stylist!

PANDORA is a sweet younger girl. She is also very nervous, so you will have to take things slowly. She does know a few commands, and she’s very food motivated, which will help with training. Pandora is okay with cats, good with other dogs, and even good with kids. (And we’re sure she’ll be good for your heart, too.) If you think she may be the right one for you, give her the second chance she deserves. The adoption fee is $95.

TULIP is as sweet as the flower for which she’s named. She would be a perfect match for an older person; Tulip is calm and she loves curling up on one’s lap for a snooze. If an affectionate companion is what you’re looking for, come meet Tulip; we promise she’ll brighten your day...and many days to come. The adoption fee is $35.
«
DELILAH is an affectionate little gal, just waiting for the right person to give her a home. She’s not huge on being picked up yet, but if you give her the time and patience, we think she could get used to this. If you are the kind soul who can spare some love, stop in; Delilah will love you back. The adoption fee is $35.
«
HAPPY is...well...happy! But he’d be even happier if he had what he wants most — a home! He loves attention, and he love to return any affection you give. Happy doesn’t mind being picked up, and he loves being pet. If you’re in need of a friend (and who isnt’?), stop by the shelter and make Happy’s day. The adoption fee is $35.

The Theater Comes To You

ESIDES offering the highest quality theatrical productions with Broadway’s brightest stars, Cape May Stage is taking theatre all over Cape May and Cumberland counties with a series of workshops in community and senior centers. Cape May Stage, in cooperation with the New Jersey Theatre Alliance, is thrilled to announce several exciting opportunities in conjunction with the 15th Annual Stages Festival beginning March 1st and running through March 31, 2012. The Stages Festival is a statewide event offering free and discounted tickets to performances, workshops, classes and events at the state’s professional theatres, as well as in non-traditional venues like libraries, schools, senior centers and museums. The program was developed to encourage New Jersey’s citizens to attend their local professional theatres by making the experience affordable, accessible, and fun. During the month, Cape May Stage is offering Taking Center Stage — free theatre workshops and acting classes — throughout the South Jersey region. The program will encourage families and audiences of all ages to experience professional theatre together. Especially anticipated is the Empowerment Workshop, the goal of which is to help people in their daily lives by equipping them with some of the techniques that professional artists use. “All of life is an improvisation — we don’t know what we are going to say or do until a situation provokes us to speak or act,” says Artistic Director, Roy Steinberg. Taking Center Stage will use

Sign up for one of the workshops and give yourself a chance to discover the inner workings of creating a live theatrical production as we explore how acting, directing, sets, lights and costumes convey meaning in theatre. Explore the process of creating a character and gain insight into the training that evolves into the craft of acting. Bird Droppings
B
The weekly report from the world’s birdwatching capital... by Seymore Thanu
OOKS. Just that. Books. Art and wisdom keyed onto paper and bound between covers. For hundreds of years, it is how our species has passed on wisdom. For millions of people, this technological trilobite is bound to their earliest memories. Of sitting on daddy’s knee and turning pages. Of lying in bed, under the blanket with a f lashlight and being ferried to distant lands on a bridge built with words. Of looking at pictures of birds from all around the world and dreaming “some day, I’ll see a Tawny Frogmouth myself.” Most people love books. Some people hate them. If you fall into the latter category, what the heck are you doing reading this column in the first place. Columns are just the larval form of books. But if you are like me, a book lover as well as a student of birds and nature, then you should know that not only do the folks over at the Cape May Bird Observatory
have one of the best selections of natural history books in New Jersey, they also have an extraordinary selection of used and out-of-print books. Some of them are in great demand. Some are rare. Some hark back to the earliest days of bird study. Some are still in print. You can buy them right off the shelf, brand spanking new if you like but...
But why would you want to buy a brand new Sibley Guide to Birds when there is a perfectly good one on the used book rack that is priced at... Oops. Sorry. It’s a first printing, first edition. That’s going to cost you more than the new one. But if you are in a book buying mood, how about treating yourself to a copy of The Birds of the West Indies by James Bond — 4th Edition. “Imagine that,” you’re thinking. A book written by some guy named James Bond, like the spy. Uh, no. The James Bond of the book is the James Bond of the Ian Fleming book series (and subsequent movies). The author, Ian Flemming, saw a copy of the book and liked the name so much, he copped it for the name of his 007 character. Yep; THE James Bond book is plasticwrapped in CMBO. Good condition, too. And priced for just $5 Or, if you are feeling f lush, how about

Bird Droppings ? From Page 75 picking up the Handbook of the Birds of the World, Vol. 1 through 13. You’ll have to ask about the price of this one. Chances are it’s going to set you back a couple of grand. And you might want to bring a friend. Someone with a strong back. The whole series must weigh 150 pounds. Perusing the racks, I also find The Hummingbirds of North America by North America’s most prolific bird author, Paul A. Johnsgard ($20); and Brian Harrington’s The Flight of the Red Knot ($25). This is a collector’s item. This copy is marked up but in good condition. Don’t dawdle. And here’s a find! Peter Matthiessen’s The Wind Birds. Originally published in the visually stunning (and very expensive) Shorebirds of North America, Matthiessen later reprinted his introductory essay in... Oops. Too late. The book just sold. I talked myself into it (even though I already own a copy of Shorebirds of North America). Books. One of civilization’s greatest achievements. And books about birds. The next best thing to birding itself. Mark my words, just give the iPad, Kindle, and Nook a couple of more years and books like Birds of the Niagara Frontier Region and

Seymore Thanu is none other than New Jersey’s own Pete Dunne, Director of the Cape May Bird Observatory and Chief Communications Officer for New Jersey Audubon. Pete uses his talents and energy to make the natural world real for others. Author of several books on and about nature (available at CMBO) he weaves information, insight and even fantasy into a net that captures minds and hearts. He has written for virtually every birding publication and for the New York Times.

The Dating Column
I
Stella Dixon’s take on romance on Old Cape Island
AM a masochist. I fall head over heels for impossible men. I’ve been gaga over guys who are attached, men who are self-proclaimed bachelors and men who are, well, Hugh Jackman. And here we go again. Right now, I’m trying my damndest not to fall for a man named Adam who — and this hasn’t happened in years — adores me. He’s handsome and sexy and kind. He sends messages telling me how pretty he thinks I am, just so I have something nice to wake up to. He sends me pictures of beautiful landscapes just so I have something nice to look at. I even — and this hasn’t happened in years, either — like his mother. Adam is not attached, he’s not a self-proclaimed bachelor, and he isn’t Hugh Jackman. So what’s the big, fat problem, you want to know? Adam recently moved. To Hawaii. Those beautiful landscape pictures? Pineapple fields. It’s not that I don’t love Hawaii; I’m sure it’s a great place. But it might as well be Morocco. It’s so far away and so costly to get
to. (A ticket there is equal to two months’ rent... I checked.) And here’s the real kicker: I’ve known Adam since I was a kid. We’ve spent countless hours swimming through waves twenty feet away from one another on the same beach. I sat behind him in Algebra. We shared a stage in the high school play. But only after he said “Aloha” did it occur to either of us we might have been a good fit. I am a masochist.
Or maybe not. Here’s the thing about self-inflicted pain; it’s not all that different than selfpreservation. Yes, Adam’s life is in Hawaii now, and mine is very much in Cape May, and my engaging in fun, flirty conversations with him probably isn’t something that will end well. But right now, it feels good. It feels validating. It feels like just what I need. It’s easy when we see a friend continuing on with a dead-end romance to say she’s a glutton for punishment. We don’t understand how she could continue sleeping with a man who goes home to someone else, or how she could continue taking care of a man who’s waiting for something better to come along or, um, how she could consider buying a coconut bra and boarding a red-eye. But perhaps these aren’t examples of relationship masochism, after all. Perhaps we do these things, not because we feed off of the pain they’re going to cause eventually, but because we need the human connection, however temporary, they afford us now. Either that, or we desperately need a vacation in Oahu.

9th Annual FREE Spring Lecture Series Join us on four consecutive Wednesday evenings in March & April for a wide-ranging series of topics relating to the history of our region and of our nation.
All presentations will be held at the Village Welcome Center at 7pm, unless otherwise noted. Books for each presentation will be on sale with a signing/meet and greet with the author!
MARCH 21: Naval Air Station Atlantic City - Did you know that Atlantic City International Airport began its life during WWII as an important base for naval aircraft protecting Allied shipping from German U-Boats? Dr. Richard Porcelli will discuss his new book, Images of America: Naval Air Station Atlantic City and examine the wartime origins of our region’s most important aviation facility. Held at the NASW Aviation Museum at the Cape May Airport. MARCH 28: The First Steamship to Cross the Atlantic - For thousands of years, ships plied the seas of the world powered only by sails or oars. With the voyage of the steamship Savannah in 1819, sea travel was forever changed. John Laurence Busch, author of Steam Coffin: Captain Moses Rogers and the Steamship Savannah Break the Barrier, will examine the vital importance of the Savannah, the first steamship to cross the Atlantic. APRIL 4: Civil War and the Ludlam Legacy - In the 1860s, young Jesse Ludlam of Dennisville finds himself orphaned and thrust into the horror of the Civil War. To save his family’s shipyard and to avenge the death of his parents, he must find a way to survive. William Watson will discuss his most recent novel, The Ludlam Legacy, the story of a Cape May County teenager in the midst of our nation’s most tragic conflict. APRIL 11: Historical Fun through Children’s Books - Historical fiction is a wonderful tool for getting young people interested in history. Award-winning author and artist Trinka Hakes-Noble will explore the uses of history through a discussion of her book The Scarlet Stockings Spy, the tale of a brave girl in British-occupied
Philadelphia who aids George Washington’s army during the Revolution.

You’ve all read about the credit crisis facing the oncegreat European nations. Well, there’s a silver lining to that cloud! Banks have foreclosed on literally thousands of castles and stately homes, and since no-one in Europe can afford the upkeep, they’re being sold on to US citizens! For under $200 a pop! Be warned: all sales are final and ghosts and vampires are often included in the sale!
